Search

Physical properties of stars such as luminosity, surface temperature, distance, or mass are measured from observations. These physical properties are of paramount importance to understand how stars are born, live, and die in the universe near and far. This chapter discusses the basic concepts used by astronomers to derive key information about stars from the light they emit. We present through a pedagogical approach the methods required for determining stellar brightness (apparent and absolute magnitudes), surface temperature (via black-body radiation and spectral classification), and distance (using parallax and standard candles). Massive stars are predominantly born in stellar associations or clusters. Their radiation fields, stellar winds, and supernovae strongly impact their local environment. In the first few million years of a cluster's life, massive stars are dynamically ejected running away from the cluster at high speed. However, the production rate of dynamically ejected runaways is poorly constrained. Here we report on a sample of 55 massive runaway stars ejected from the young cluster R136 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Astrometric analysis with Gaia reveals two channels of dynamically ejected runaways. The first channel ejects massive stars in all directions and is consistent with dynamical interactions during and after the birth of R136. The second channel launches stars in a preferred direction and may be related to a cluster interaction. We find that 23-33% of the most luminous stars initially born in R136 are runaways. Model predictions have significantly underestimated the dynamical escape fraction of massive stars. Consequently, their role in shaping and heating the interstellar and galactic medium, along with their role in driving galactic outflows, is far more important than previously thought., Comment: Published in Nature on 2024 October 09. 39 pages, 17 figures

Binary systems play a crucial role in massive star evolution. Systems composed of B-type and O-type stars are of particular interest due to their potential to lead to very energetic phenomena or the merging of exotic compact objects. We aim to determine the orbital period variations of a sample of B+B and O+B massive overcontact binaries, with the primary objectives of characterizing the evolutionary timescales of these systems and addressing the existing discrepancy between observational data and theoretical predictions derived from population synthesis models. We used Period04 to analyze archival photometric data going back a century for a sample of seven binary systems to measure their orbital periods. We then determine the period variations using a linear fit. We find that the period variation timescales of five truly overcontact binary systems align with the nuclear timescale, in agreement with previous findings for more massive overcontact binaries. Additionally, we noticed a clear distinction between the five systems that had been unambiguously classified as overcontact systems and both SV Cen and VFTS 066, which seem to be evolving on thermal timescales and might be misclassified as overcontact systems. In the case of the five overcontact binaries, our results indicate a noticeable mismatch between the observational data and the theoretical predictions derived from population synthesis models. Massive stars are recognized for their high degree of multiplicity, yet the mass ratio regime below 0.1 remains insufficiently explored. It is therefore unknown whether extremely low-mass (possibly substellar) companions can form and survive in the direct UV-irradiated environment of massive stars. In this paper, we discuss VLT/SPHERE IFS (0".15 - 0".85) observations of six massive O- and early B-type stars in Sco OB1 and M17 that each have a low-mass candidate companion. Two targets have companions that are brown dwarf candidates. The other four have candidate companions in the low end of the stellar mass regime ($\leq$ 0.30 M$_\odot$). For three of these, we have obtained a second epoch observation. At least two sources exhibit similar proper motion to that of their central star. However, given the expected proper motion of background objects, this does not imply certain companionship. We show how future follow-up observations of the brown dwarf candidate companions in $J$, $H$ and $L$ bands should allow for an unambiguous confirmation of their nature., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Modern stellar structure and evolution theory experiences a lack of observational calibrations for the interior physics of intermediate- and high-mass stars. This leads to discrepancies between theoretical predictions and observed phenomena mostly related to angular momentum and element transport. Analyses of large samples of massive stars connecting state-of-the-art spectroscopy to asteroseismology may provide clues on how to improve our understanding of their interior structure. We aim to deliver a sample of O- and B-type stars at metallicity regimes of the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) galaxies with accurate atmospheric parameters from high-resolution spectroscopy, along with a detailed investigation of line-profile broadening, for future asteroseismic studies. After describing the general aims of our two Large Programs, we develop dedicated methodology to fit spectral lines and deduce accurate global stellar parameters from high-resolution multi-epoch UVES and FEROS spectroscopy. We use the best available atmosphere models for three regimes covered by our global sample, given its breadth in terms of mass, effective temperature, and evolutionary stage. Aside from accurate atmospheric parameters and locations in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, we deliver detailed analyses of macroturbulent line broadening, including estimation of the radial and tangential components. We find that these two components are difficult to disentangle from spectra with signal-to-noise ratios below 250. Future asteroseismic modelling of the deep interior physics of the most promising stars in our sample will improve the existing dearth of such knowledge for large samples of OB stars, including those of low metallicity in the LMC., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The study of the multiplicity of massive stars gives hints on their formation processes and their evolutionary paths, which are still not fully understood. Large separation binaries (>50 milliseconds of arc, mas) can be probed by adaptive-optics-assisted direct imaging and sparse aperture masking, while close binaries can be resolved by photometry and spectroscopy. However, optical long baseline interferometry is mandatory to establish the multiplicity of Galactic massive stars at the separation gap between 1 and 50 mas. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate the capability of the new interferometric instrument MIRC-X, located at the CHARA Array, to study the multiplicity of O-type stars and therefore probe the full range of separation for more than 120 massive stars (H<7.5 mag). We initiated a pilot survey of bright O-type stars (H<6.5mag) observable with MIRC-X. We observed 29 O-type stars, including two systems in average atmospheric conditions around a magnitude of H=7.5 mag. We systematically reduced the obtained data with the public reduction pipeline of the instrument. We analyzed the reduced data using the dedicated python software CANDID to detect companions. Out of these 29 systems, we resolved 19 companions in 17 different systems with angular separations between ~0.5 and 50 mas. This results in a multiplicity fraction fm=17/29=0.59+/-0.09, and an average number of companions fc=19/29=0.66+/-0.13. Those results are in agreement with the results of the SMASH+ survey in the Southern Hemisphere. Thirteen of these companions have been resolved for the first time, including the companion responsible for the nonthermal emission in Cyg OB2-5 A and the confirmation of the candidate companion of HD 47129 suggested by SMASH+. Massive stars are predominantly found in binaries and higher order multiples. While the period and eccentricity distributions of OB stars are now well established across different metallicity regimes, the determination of mass-ratios has been mostly limited to double-lined spectroscopic binaries. As a consequence, the mass-ratio distribution remains subject to significant uncertainties. Open questions include the shape and extent of the companion mass-function towards its low-mass end and the nature of undetected companions in single-lined spectroscopic binaries. In this contribution, we present the results of a large and systematic analysis of a sample of over 80 single-lined O-type spectroscopic binaries (SB1s) in the Milky Way and in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Given that mergers are often invoked to explain many exotic phenomena in massive star evolution, understanding the evolutionary phase directly preceding a merger, the overcontact phase, is of crucial importance. Despite its importance, large uncertainties exist in our understanding of the evolution of massive overcontact binaries. We aim to provide robust observational constraints on the future dynamical evolution of massive overcontact systems by measuring the rate at which the periods change for a sample of six such objects. Furthermore, we aim to investigate whether the periods of unequal mass systems show higher rates of change than their equal mass counterparts as theoretical models predict. Using archival photometric data from various ground- and space-based missions covering up to ~40 years, we measure the periods of each system over several smaller time spans. We then fit a linear regression through the measured periods to determine the rate at which the period is changing over the entire data set. We find that all of the stars in our sample have very small period changes and that there does not seem to be a correlation with the mass ratio. This implies that the orbital periods for these systems are stable on the nuclear timescale, and that the unequal mass systems may not equalize as expected. When comparing our results with population synthesis distributions, we find large discrepancies between the expected mass ratios and period stabilities. We find that these discrepancies can be mitigated to a degree by removing systems with shorter initial periods, suggesting that the observed sample of overcontact systems may originate from binary systems with longer initial orbital periods., Comment: 11 pages, 6 (+5) Figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Stellar-mass black holes are the final remnants of stars born with more than 15 solar masses. Billions are expected to reside in the Local Group, yet only few are known, mostly detected through X-rays emitted as they accrete material from a companion star. Here, we report on VFTS 243: a massive X-ray faint binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud. With an orbital period of 10.4-d, it comprises an O-type star of 25 solar masses and an unseen companion of at least nine solar masses. Our spectral analysis excludes a non-degenerate companion at a 5-sigma confidence level. The minimum companion mass implies that it is a black hole. No other X-ray quiet black hole is unambiguously known outside our Galaxy. The (near-)circular orbit and kinematics of VFTS 243 imply that the collapse of the progenitor into a black hole was associated with little or no ejected material or black-hole kick. We aim to hunt for massive binaries hosting a black hole companion (OB+BH) and establish the natal mass-ratio distribution of massive stars at the subsolar metallicity environment of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We use the shift-and-add grid disentangling technique to characterize the hidden companions in 51 SB1 O-type and evolved B-type binaries in the LMC monitored in the framework of the Tarantula Massive Binary Monitoring (TMBM). Out of the 51 SB1 systems, 43 (84%) are found to have non-degenerate stellar companions, of which 28 are confident detections, and 15 are less certain (SB1: or SB2:). Of these 43 targets, one is found to be a triple (VFTS 64), and two are found to be quadruples (VFTS 120, 702). The remaining eight targets (16%) retain an SB1 classification. Aside from the unambiguous case of VFTS 243, analysed in detailed in a separate paper, we identify two additional OB+BH candidates: VFTS 514 and VFTS 779. Additional black holes may be present in the sample but at a lower probability. Our study firmly establishes a virtually flat natal mass-ratio distribution for O-type stars at LMC metallicity, covering the entire mass-ratio range (0.05 < q < 1) and periods in the range 0 < log P < 3 [d]. The nature of the OB+BH candidates should be verified through future monitoring, but the frequency of OB+BH candidates is generally in line with recent predictions at LMC metallicity., Comment: 41 pages (14 main article + 27 appendix), accepted to A&A

Spectroscopic data are necessary to break degeneracies in asteroseismic modelling of the interior structure in high- and intermediate-mass stars. We derive precise photospheric stellar parameters for a sample of 166 B-type stars with TESS light curves, suitable for detailed asteroseismic studies, through a homogeneous spectroscopic analysis. The variability types of these stars are classified based on all currently available TESS sectors. We obtained high-resolution spectra for all 166 targets with the FEROS spectrograph in the context of a large program. The Least-Squares Deconvolution method is employed to investigate spectral line profile variability and to detect binary systems. We identify 26 spectroscopic double-lined binaries; the remainder of the sample are 42 supergiants in the LMC galaxy and 98 Galactic stars. The spectra of the Galactic stars are analysed with the zeta-Payne, a machine learning-based spectrum analysis algorithm. We determine the five main surface parameters with average formal precisions of 70 K (Teff), 0.03 dex (logg), 0.07 dex ([M/H]), 8 km/s (vsini), and 0.7 km/s (vmicro). The average internal uncertainties we find for FEROS spectra with our spectrum analysis method are 430 K (Teff), 0.12 dex (logg), 0.13 dex ([M/H]), 12 km/s (vsini), and 2 km/s (vmicro). We find spectroscopic evidence that eight of the 98 Galactic targets are fast rotating g-mode pulsators occurring in between the slowly pulsating B (SPB) stars and delta Scuti instability strips. The g-mode frequencies of these pulsators are shifted to relatively high frequency values due to their rotation. Their apparently too low Teff relative to the SPB instability region can in most cases be explained by the gravity darkening effect. We also discover 13 new HgMn stars of which only one is found in a spectroscopic binary, resulting in a biased and therefore unreliable low binary rate of only 8%., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, tables A.1 and A.2 will only be available in electronic form at the CDS. As potential progenitors of several exotic phenomena including gravitational wave sources, magnetic stars, and Be stars, close massive binary systems probe a crucial area of the parameter space in massive star evolution. Despite the importance of these systems, large uncertainties regarding the nature and efficiency of the internal mixing mechanisms still exist. In this work, we aim to provide robust observational constraints on the internal mixing processes by spectroscopically analyzing a sample of three massive overcontact binaries at different metallicities. Using optical phase-resolved spectroscopic data, we perform an atmosphere analysis using more traditional 1D techniques and using state-of-the-art 3D techniques. We compare and contrast the assumptions and results of each technique and investigate how the assumptions affect the final derived atmospheric parameters. We find that in all three cases, both components of system are highly overluminous indicating either efficient internal mixing of helium or previous non-conservative mass transfer. However, we do not find strong evidence of helium or CNO surface abundance changes usually associated with mixing. Additionally, we find that in unequal mass systems, the measured effective temperature and luminosity of the less massive component places it very close to the more massive component on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. These results were obtained independently using both of the techniques mentioned above, which suggests that these measurements are robust. The observed discrepancies between the temperature and the surface abundance measurements when compared to theoretical expectations indicate that unaccounted for additional physical mechanisms may be at play., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 28 pages, 20 figures

The Humphreys-Davidson (HD) limit empirically defines a region of high luminosities (log L > 5.5) and low effective temperatures (T < 20kK) on the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram in which hardly any supergiant stars are observed. Attempts to explain this limit through instabilities arising in near- or super-Eddington winds have been largely unsuccessful. Using modern stellar evolution we aim to re-examine the HD limit, investigating the impact of enhanced mixing on massive stars. We construct grids of stellar evolution models appropriate for the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC, LMC), as well as for the Galaxy, spanning various initial rotation rates and convective overshooting parameters. Significantly enhanced mixing apparently steers stellar evolution tracks away from the region of the HD limit. To quantify the excess of over-luminous stars in stellar evolution simulations we generate synthetic populations of massive stars, and make detailed comparisons with catalogues of cool (T < 12.5kK) and luminous (log L > 4.7) stars in the SMC and LMC. We find that adjustments to the mixing parameters can lead to agreement between the observed and simulated red supergiant populations, but for hotter supergiants the simulations always over-predict the number of very luminous (log L > 5.4) stars compared to observations. The excess of luminous supergiants decreases for enhanced mixing, possibly hinting at an important role mixing has in explaining the HD limit. The majority of close massive binary stars with initial periods of a few days experience a contact phase, in which both stars overflow their Roche lobes simultaneously. We perform the first dedicated study of the evolution of massive contact binaries and provide a comprehensive prediction of their observed properties. We compute 2790 detailed binary models for the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds each, assuming a conservative mass transfer. The initial parameter space for both grids span total masses from 20 to 80$\,\textrm{M}_{\odot}$, orbital periods of 0.6 to 2 days and mass ratios of 0.6 to 1.0. We find that models that remain in contact over nuclear timescales evolve towards equal masses, echoing the mass ratios of their observed counterparts. Ultimately, the fate of our nuclear-timescale models is to merge on the main sequence. Our predicted period-mass ratio distributions of O-type contact binaries are similar for both galaxies, and we expect 10 such systems together in both Magellanic Clouds. While we can largely reproduce the observed distribution, we over-estimate the population of equal-mass contact binaries. This situation is somewhat remedied if we also account for binaries that are approaching contact. Our theoretical distributions work particularly well for contact binaries with periods $<$2 days and total masses $\lessapprox45\,\textrm{M}_{\odot}$. BAT99 126 is a multiple system in the Large Magellanic Cloud containing a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star, which has a reported spectroscopic (orbital) period of 25.5 days and a photometric (orbital) period of 1.55 days, and hence is potentially one of the shortest WR binaries known to date. Such short-period binary systems containing a WR star in low-metallicity environments are prime candidate progenitors of black-hole (BH) mergers. By thoroughly analysing the spectroscopic and photometric data, we aim to establish the true multiplicity of BAT99 126, characterise the orbit(s) of the system, measure the physical properties of its individual components, and determine the overall evolutionary status of the system. Using newly acquired high resolution spectra, we measured radial velocities and performed a spectral analysis of the individual components. We estimated the age of the system and derived an evolutionary scenario for the 1.55-day system. BAT99 126 comprises at least four components. The 1.55-day photometric signal originates in an eclipsing O+O binary of spectral types O4 V and O6.5 V, and masses of 36+/-5 MSun and 15+/-2 MSun, respectively. For the WR star, we derived a spectral type WN2.5-3 and reject the previously reported 25.5-d period. We find evidence in the composite spectra of a fourth component, a B1 V star, which shows radial velocity variation. The configurations of the B-type star, WR star, and possible additional undetected components remain unknown. We estimated the age of the system to be 4.2 Myr. The O+O binary likely went through a phase of conservative mass transfer and is currently a near-contact system. We show that BAT99 126 is a multiple - quadruple or higher-order - system with a total initial mass > 160 MSun. Liu et al. (2019) recently reported the detection of a 68 [+11/-13] solar mass (Msun) black hole (BH) paired with an 8.2 [+0.9/-1.2] Msun B-type sub-giant star in the 78.9-day spectroscopic binary system LB-1. Such a black hole is over twice as massive as any other known stellar-mass black hole with non-compact companions2 and its mass approaches those that result from BH-BH coalescences that are detected by gravitational wave interferometers. Its presence in a solar-like metallicity environment challenges conventional theories of massive binary evolution, stellar winds and core-collapse supernovae, so that more exotic scenarios seem to be needed to explain the existence and properties of LB-1. Here, we show that the observational diagnostics used to derive the BH mass results from the orbital motion of the B-type star, not that of the BH. As a consequence, no evidence for a massive BH remains in the data, therefore solving the existing tension with formation models of such a massive BH at solar metallicity and with theories of massive star evolution in general., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

The massive O4.5 V + O5.5 V binary VFTS 352 in the Tarantula nebula is one of the shortest-period and most massive overcontact binaries known. Recent theoretical studies indicate that some of these systems could ultimately lead to the formation of gravitational waves via black hole binary mergers through the chemically homogeneous evolution pathway. By analyzing ultraviolet-optical phase-resolved spectroscopic data, we aim to constrain atmospheric and wind properties that could be later used to confront theoretical predictions from binary evolution. In particular, surface abundances are powerful diagnostics of the evolutionary status, mass transfer and the internal mixing processes. From a set of 32 VLT/FLAMES visual and 8 HST/COS ultraviolet spectra, we used spectral disentangling to separate the primary and secondary components. Using a genetic algorithm wrapped around the NLTE model atmosphere and spectral synthesis code FASTWIND, we perform an 11-parameter optimization to derive the atmospheric and wind parameters of both components, including the surface abundances of He, C, N, O and Si. We find that both components are hotter than expected compared to single-star evolutionary models indicating that additional mixing processes may be at play. However the derived chemical abundances do not show significant indications of mixing when adopting baseline values typical for the system environment., Comment: 24 pages, 4 tables, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

One of the first massive stars detected in X-rays, Schulte 12 has remained a puzzle in several aspects. In particular, its extreme brightness both in the visible and X-ray ranges is intriguing. Thanks to Swift and XMM-Newton observations covering ~5000d, we report the discovery of a regular 108d modulation in X-ray flux of unknown origin. The minimum in the high-energy flux appears due to a combination of increased absorption and decreased intrinsic emission. We examined in parallel the data from a dedicated spectroscopic and photometric monitoring in the visible and near-IR domains, complemented by archives. While a similar variation timescale is found in those data, they do not exhibit the strict regular clock found at high energies. Changes in line profiles cannot be related to binarity but rather correspond to non-radial pulsations. Considering the substantial revision of the distance of Schulte 12 from the second GAIA data release, the presence of such oscillations agrees well with the evolutionary status of Schulte 12, as it lies in an instability region of the HR diagram., Comment: accepted by A&A

A significant fraction of massive stars are found in multiple systems. The effect of binarity on stellar evolution is poorly constrained. In particular, the role of tides and mass transfer on surface chemical abundances is not constrained observationally. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of binarity on the stellar properties and surface abundances of massive binaries. We perform a spectroscopic analysis of six Galactic massive binaries. The spectra of individual components are obtained from a spectral disentangling method and are subsequently analyzed by means of atmosphere models. The stellar parameters and CNO surface abundances are determined. Most systems are made of main-sequence stars. Three systems are detached, two are in contact and no information is available for the sixth system. For eleven out of the twelve stars studied the surface abundances are only mildly affected by stellar evolution and mixing. They are not different from those of single stars, within the uncertainties. The secondary of XZ~Cep is strongly chemically enriched. Considering previous determinations of surface abundance in massive binary systems suggests that the effect of tides on chemical mixing is limited, whereas mass transfer and removal of outer layers of the mass donor leads to the appearance of chemically processed material at the surface, although this is not systematic. The evolutionary masses of the components of our six systems are on average 16.5% higher than the dynamical masses. The X-ray emission of the O+O binary HD166734 was monitored using Swift and XMM-Newton observatories, leading to the discovery of phase-locked variations. The presence of an f line in the He-like triplets further supports a wind-wind collision as the main source of the X-rays in HD166734. While temperature and absorption do not vary significantly along the orbit, the X-ray emission strength varies by one order of magnitude, with a long minimum state (Delta(phi)~0.1) occurring after a steep decrease. The flux at minimum is compatible with the intrinsic emission of the O-stars in the system, suggesting a possible disappearance of colliding wind emission. While this minimum cannot be explained by eclipse or occultation effects, a shock collapse may occur at periastron in view of the wind properties. Afterwards, the recovery is long, with an X-ray flux proportional to the separation d (in hard band) or to d^2 (in soft band). This is incompatible with an adiabatic nature for the collision (which would instead lead to "F_X propto 1/d"), but could be reconciled with a radiative character of the collision, though predicted temperatures are lower and more variable than in observations. The long-period, highly eccentric O-star binary 9 Sgr, known for its non-thermal radio emission and its relatively bright X-ray emission, went through its periastron in 2013. Such an event can be used to observationally test the predictions of the theory of colliding stellar winds over a broad range of wavelengths. We have conducted a multi-wavelength monitoring campaign of 9 Sgr around the 2013 periastron. In this paper, we focus on X-ray observations and optical spectroscopy. The optical spectra allow us to revisit the orbital solution of 9 Sgr and to refine its orbital period to 9.1 years. The X-ray flux is maximum at periastron over all energy bands, but with clear differences as a function of energy. The largest variations are observed at energies above 2 keV, whilst the spectrum in the soft band (0.5 - 1.0 keV) remains mostly unchanged indicating that it arises far from the collision region, in the inner winds of the individual components. The level of the hard emission at periastron clearly deviates from the 1/r relation expected for an adiabatic wind interaction zone, whilst this relation seems to hold at the other phases covered by our observations. The spectra taken at phase 0.946 reveal a clear Fe xxv line at 6.7 keV, but no such line is detected at periastron (phi = 0.000) although a simple model predicts a strong line that should be easily visible in the data. The peculiarities of the X-ray spectrum of 9 Sgr could reflect the impact of radiative inhibition as well as a phase-dependent efficiency of particle acceleration on the shock properties., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics
