A surface sol-gel process technique to accomplish the formation of gold nanoparticles on ordered mesoporous silica materials via the deposition-precipitation (DP) method without the constraint of the low isoelectric point (IEP) of SiO2 surfaces is reported. The study shows that ultrasmall gold nanoparticles are prepared on surface-modified SBA-15 via a DP method.

A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate containing silver particles was prepared by an acidcatalyzed sol-gel method. Silver nitrate was first doped into the sol-gel film followed by chemical reduction of the silver ions with sodium borohydride to produce silver particles. This silver-doped sol-gel substrate exhibits strong enhancement of Raman scattering from adsorbed uranyl ions with a detection limit of 8.5 × 10[SUP-8] M, which is comparable to existing methods of uranyl detection such as spectrophotometry, fiuorometry, and a SERS method based on ligand-modified solution silver colloids. However, in the present method, no preconcentration steps, chromogens, or complexing ligands are needed. Compared with the SERS method using Ag colloidal sols, the silver-doped sol-gel film has the advantage that the silver particles trapped in the sol-gel matrix are much more stable than Ag colloids in liquid media. Furthermore, porous silica sol-gel materials are known to have affinities toward many inorganic and organic molecules. The enhanced adsorption affinities could also lead to the increased SERS sensitivity. The performance of the new silver-doped sol-gel substrate was evaluated with uranyl ions and compared to that of a SERS substrate based on silver-coated silica beads prepared by vacuum deposition. The detection limit for the silver-doped sol-gel film was 104 limes lower than that for the silver-coated silica beads. The sol-gel substrate was further used to obtain, for the first time, the surface-enhanced Raman spectrum of neptunyl ions in dilute aqueous solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge of structural and thermal properties of molten salts is crucial for understanding and predicting their stability in many applications such as thermal energy storage and nuclear energy systems. Probing the behavior of metal contaminants in molten salts is presently limited to either foreign ionic species or metal nanocrystals added to the melt. To bridge the gap between these two end states and follow the nucleation and growth of metal species in molten salt environment in situ , we use synchrotron X-rays as both a source of solvated electrons for reducing Ni 2+ ions added to ZnCl 2 melt and as an atomic-level probe for detecting formation of zerovalent Ni nanoparticles. By combining extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis with X-ray absorption near edge structure modeling, we obtained the average size and structure of the nanoparticles and proposed a radiation-induced reduction mechanism of metal ions in molten salts.

Understanding the factors that control solubility and speciation of metal ions in molten salts is key for their successful use in molten salt reactors and electrorefining. Here, we employ X-ray and optical absorption spectroscopies and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the coordination environment of Ni(II) in molten ZnCl 2 , where it is poorly soluble, and contrast it with highly soluble Co(II) over a wide temperature range. In solid NiCl 2 , the Ni ion is octahedrally coordinated, whereas the ZnCl 2 host matrix favors tetrahedral coordination. Our experimental and computational results show that the coordination environment of Ni(II) in ZnCl 2 is disordered among tetra- and pentacoordinate states. In contrast, the local structure of dissolved Co(II) is tetrahedral and commensurate with the ZnCl 2 host's structure. The heterogeneity and concomitant large bond length disorder in the Ni case constitute a plausible explanation for its lower solubility in molten ZnCl 2 .

Porous liquids are a type of porous materials that engineer permanent porosity into unique flowing liquids, exhibiting promising functionalities for a variety of applications. Here a Type I porous liquid is synthesized by transforming porous organic cages into porous ionic liquids via a supramolecular complexation strategy. Simple physical mixing of 18-crown-6 with task-specific anionic porous organic cages affords a porous ionic liquid with anionic porous organic cages as the anionic parts and 18-crown-6/potassium ion complexes as the cationic parts. In contrast, mixing of 15-crown-5 and anionic porous organic cages in a 2:1 ratio gives only solids, while the addition of excess 15-crown-5 affords a Type II porous liquid. The permanent porosity in the cage-based porous liquids has been also confirmed by molecular simulation, positron (e + ) annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, and enhanced gas sorption capacity compared with pure crown ethers., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A composite organic cathode material based on aromatic polyimide (PI) and highly conductive graphene was prepared through a facile in situ polymerization method for application in lithium-ion batteries. The in situ polymerization generated intimate contact between PI and electronically conductive graphene, resulting in conductive composites with highly reversible redox reactions and good structure stability. The synergistic effect between PI and graphene enabled not only a high reversible capacity of 232.6 mAh g -1 at a charge-discharge rate of C/10 but also exceptionally high-rate cycling stability, that is, a high capacity of 108.9 mAh g -1 at a very high charge-discharge rate of 50C with a capacity retention of 80 % after 1000 cycles. This improved electrochemical performance resulted from the combination of stable redox reversibility of PI and high electronic conductivity of the graphene additive. The graphene-based composite also exhibited much better performance than composites based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes and the conductive carbon black C45 in terms of specific capacity and long-term cycling stability under the same charge-discharge rates., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The development of high-performance materials for carbon dioxide separation and capture will significantly contribute to a solution for climate change. Herein, (bicycloheptenyl)ethyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMSPNB) membranes with varied cross-link densities were synthesized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization. The developed polymer membranes show higher permeability and better selectivity than those of conventional cross-linked PDMS membrane. The achieved performance (CO2 permeability≈6800 Barrer; CO2 /N2 selectivity≈14) is very promising for practical applications. The key to achieving this high performance is the use of an in situ cross-linking method for difunctional PDMS macromonomers, which provides lightly cross-linked membranes. By combining positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and gas solubility measurements, key parameters necessary for achieving excellent performance have been elucidated., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. CdWO4 has only previously been reported in the monoclinic, or wolframite, phase. Here we report the first metastable, tetragonal or scheelite, CdWO4 nanopowder. The tetragonal CdWO4 was synthesized by a propylene glycol solvothermal method. The scheelite phase is stabilized by a combination of high surface area and surface complexation by the propylene glycol. The CdWO4 is stable at 1 bar to 300 degrees C, and converts back to the monoclinic wolframite phase between 300 and 500 degrees C. The nanopowder exhibits cubic morphology and the average particle size of the nanopowder is around 50 nm.

We report the observation of 3D linear or branched chains of polymer-blend microspheres generated from liquid droplets of solution where the modified surface structure of the polymer composite results in highly robust interparticle bonds. Using a linear quadrupole to precisely position particles in space, we are able to take advantage of this novel material property to actively assemble particles in programmable three-dimensional architectures. The robust interlocking nature of interparticle linkage gives rise to strongly coupled morphology-dependent resonances in bisphere and trisphere systems, suggesting the possibility of three-dimensional photonic "molecules" and microscale optical manipulation applications.

Sodium chlorate is an achiral molecule that crystallizes from water in the chiral space group P2(1)3. In the absence of chiral perturbations, a random distribution of (+) and (-) crystals is obtained. Kondepudi(2) has shown that constantly stirring an evaporating NaClO(3) solution gives mostly either (+) or (-) crystals. Repeating this experiment many times gives equal numbers of (+) and (-) sets of crystals. Herein we report that when evaporating aqueous NaClO(3) is subjected to beta particles from an Sr-90 source, an asymmetric distribution of (+) and (-) crystals favoring the (+) crystals is obtained. The beta particles are energetic polarized electrons that are approximately 80% of left-handed helicity. By a poorly understood mechanism, the spin polarized electrons produce chiral nucleating sites that favor formation of the (+)-NaClO(3) crystals. Exposure of the evaporating solution instead to energetic positrons from an Na-22 source yields mainly (-)-NaClO(3) crystals. Polarized positrons are of predominantly right-handed helicity.
