Abstract

SUMMARY Understanding and quantifying the environmental impacts of personal transportation is the first step in the management and mitigation process. A life cycle assessment of vehicles allocates a sweeping majority of the lifetime environmental impacts to the use phase. This justifies the strong emphasis being placed on development of fuel efficient vehicles as the chief method used to reduce the environmental impact of transportation. When mandating widespread adoption of efficient vehicles, it is important to consider the rebound effect, a deliberation that is often overlooked. The rebound expresses an increase in consumption associated with an increase in efficiency. A consensus in the literature produces a rebound for improving vehicle fuel economy around 20%, though a fair degree of variability does exist, ranging generally from 5%-65%, with one study presenting value of 1000%. This study investigated how consumers will alter their driving habits in response to changes in fuel price, in the form of both price fluctuations at the pump and improvements in fuel efficiency. Data were also analyzed from four years of the National Household Transportation Survey spanning from 1990 to 2009 and one firsthand survey to estimate the environmental impact of personal vehicle usage, changes in driving behavior over time, and the extent to which a rebound may be exhibited following the adoption of fuel efficient vehicles. The environmental impacts were assessed over the impact categories of energy, water consumption, and emission of multiple different pollutants. Results were obtained for the state of Wisconsin; the Milwaukee, WI, region; and the Madison, WI, area. It was found that there was no difference significant between the groups for annual household miles travelled and for the size of fuel price increase to provoke a change in driving tendencies. There was, however, a difference in how each group would respond to the identified fuel price change. The analysis of environmental impact concluded that in the entire state of Wisconsin, eight of the ten impact categories exhibited a decrease in per person impact between the survey years. In Milwaukee, WI, all ten impact categories displayed an increase in per person impacts. Coincident with a generally increasing trend in annual miles driven per person, improvements in fuel efficiency may not have been the influential factor in decreasing the impacts. The myriad rebound calculations produced magnitudes between 30%-846%, appreciably larger than the 20% approximate average value found in the literature. This suggests that consumers who adopt more fuel efficient vehicles may have a strong propensity to increase their driving activity to the degree that their increase in consumption more than out paces the increase in efficiency, resulting in an overall increase in environmental impact despite improving efficiency.

Background: One theory of hindfoot biomechanics claims that the subtalar joint (STJ) reaches neutral position during midstance, while another maintains that the STJ stays in an everted position throughout. There is also evidence that STJ position during midstance changes with walking speed. The present study will compare four distinct STJ static positions to 3D kinematics of the STJ during self-selected and fast gait in over-ground level walking. Methods : The right lower leg of 20 male participants was placed in three clinically used subtalar joint neutral static positions using biomechanical examination: SJNR (STJ neutral by calculation method), SJNP (STJ neutral by palpation method), NCSP (neutral calcaneal stance position), as well as in the resting bilateral standing posture RCSP (resting calcaneal stance position). An eight-camera 3D motion capture system was used to capture and analyze the kinematics of the ankle complex during self-selected and fast walking conditions, as well as, the four static postures. Results: The 3D subtalar joint movement pattern did not coincide with any of the three subtalar joint neutral positions (SJNR, SJNP and NCSP) during the midstance phase of self-selected or fast walking. Specifically, the subtalar joint remained in a significantly more everted and abducted position with greater deviations from neutral under the fast-walking condition. Conclusions: None of the clinically used STJ neutral positions agree with the 3D pattern of the STJ during self-selected and fast gait. Abstract

Duration measures the percentage change in the market value of a cash flow for a given change in yield and comes close to true value when rate changes are small. With larger changes in rates, it is necessary to consider convexity - the curvature of the price-yield relationship. When dealing with callable bonds, whose maturities and cash flows are uncertain, the best way to estimate the price-yield relationship is to consider the bond as a non-callable security with an imbedded short option. Using option valuation techniques, one can then derive an option-adjusted yield, maturity, duration and convexity that take into account the value of the call option and the bond's market volatility. Much of these data are collected by the state transportation agencies., In many instances, the state-level database management systems and/or information, tracking systems do not automatically generate output appropriate for direct, submission to FHWA, AASHTO or TRB. Therefore, there was a need to develop a digital, protocol and database management system to streamline tracking and reporting of, transportation proprietary product evaluation information for internal use and, submittal to the national databases. Increasing the efficiency of this reporting, process will allow ConnDOT, and potentially other DOTs, to more efficiently conduct, this business function and with greater detail and accuracy. The first phase of this, research developed the application. The second phase of this research developed the, protocol and local-area-network connectivity necessary to provide wider access to the, database.

Abstract

Behcet's disease is a rare autoimmune systemic vasculitis. It usually presents with a symptom complex involving primarily mucocutaneous lesions, genital lesions, and uveitis. When it involves the lower extremity, venous and arterial disease predominates, and joint involvement occurs in approximately 50% of patients. We present a patient with Behcet's disease who was initially referred to us for chronic toenail pathology.
