Immunity is hypothesized to share limited resources with other physiological functions and may mediate life history trade-offs, for example between reproduction and survival. However, vertebrate immune defense is a complex system that consists of three components. To date, no study has assessed all of these components for the same animal model and within a given situation. Previous studies have determined that the acquired immunity of common eiders (Somateria mollissima) is suppressed during incubation. The present paper aims to assess the innate immune response in fasting eiders in relation to their initial body condition. Innate immunity was assessed by measuring plasma nitric oxide (NO) levels, prior to and after injection of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), a method which is easily applicable to many wild animals. Body condition index and corticosterone levels were subsequently determined as indicators of body condition and stress level prior to LPS injection. The innate immune response in eiders did not vary significantly throughout the incubation period. The innate immune response of eiders did not vary significantly in relation to their initial body condition but decreased significantly when corticosterone levels increased. However, NO levels after LPS injection were significantly and positively related to initial body condition, while there was a significant negative relationship with plasma corticosterone levels. Our study suggests that female eiders preserve an effective innate immune response during incubation and this response might be partially determined by the initial body condition.

Intestinal apoptosis and expression of apoptosis inducers - the cytokines TNFalpha, TGFbeta1 - and the intestinal transcription factor Cdx2, were studied according to two different metabolic and hormonal phases which characterize long-term fasting: the long period of protein sparing during which energy expenditure is derived from lipid oxidation (phase II), and the later phase characterized by a rise in body protein utilization and plasma corticosterone (phase III). Apoptosis was further studied in 2, 6, and 24 h refed rats. Morphological apoptotic events were observed by environmental and conventional scanning electron microscopy and a TUNEL test was used to characterize the final stages of apoptotic death. The gene and protein expressions of TNFalpha, TGFbeta1, and Cdx2 were measured. Apoptotic events and TNFalpha, TGFbeta1, and Cdx2 gene and protein expressions did not vary significantly during phase II as compared to the normally fed animals. However, a phase III fasting induced a delay in intestinal epithelial apoptosis, along with a 92, 58, and 25% decrease in TNFalpha, TGFbeta1, and Cdx2 mRNAs, respectively. The amounts of TNFalpha, TGFbeta1, and Cdx2 proteins decreased by 70, 36, and 25%, respectively. Apoptosis was restored rapidly after a 2 h refeeding following the phase III, accompanied by a significant increase in TNFalpha, TGFbeta1, and Cdx2 mRNA and the protein levels, compared to the phase III fasting values. The concomitant decreases in cytokines and Cdx2 and in apoptotic cells during phase III suggest the preservation of enterocytes during this critical fasting period in order to optimize nutrient absorption as soon as food is available and thus, to rapidly restore body mass.

Although huddling was shown to be the key by which emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) save energy and sustain their breeding fast during the Antarctic winter, the intricacies of this social behavior have been poorly studied. We recorded abiotic variables with data loggers glued to the feathers of eight individually marked emperor penguins to investigate their thermoregulatory behavior and to estimate their "huddling time budget" throughout the breeding season (pairing and incubation period). Contrary to the classic view, huddling episodes were discontinuous and of short and variable duration, lasting 1.6+/-1.7 (S.D.) h on average. Despite heterogeneous huddling groups, birds had equal access to the warmth of the huddles. Throughout the breeding season, males huddled for 38+/-18% (S.D.) of their time, which raised the ambient temperature that birds were exposed to above 0 degrees C (at average external temperatures of -17 degrees C). As a consequence of tight huddles, ambient temperatures were above 20 degrees C during 13+/-12% (S.D.) of their huddling time. Ambient temperatures increased up to 37.5 degrees C, close to birds' body temperature. This complex social behavior therefore enables all breeders to get a regular and equal access to an environment which allows them to save energy and successfully incubate their eggs during the Antarctic winter.

Despite decades of conservation efforts on the nesting beaches, the critical status of leatherback turtles shows that their survival predominantly depends on our ability to reduce at-sea mortality. Although areas where leatherbacks meet fisheries have been identified during the long distance movements between two consecutive nesting seasons, hotspots of lethal interactions are still poorly defined within the nesting season, when individuals concentrate close to land. Here we report movements of satellite-tracked gravid leatherback turtles during the nesting season in Western Central Africa, South America and Caribbean Sea, accounting for about 70% of the world population. We show that during, and at the end of, the nesting season leatherback turtles have the propensity to remain over the continental shelf, yet sometimes perform extended movements and may even nest in neighbouring countries. Leatherbacks exploit coastal commercial fishing grounds and face substantial accidental capture by regional coastal fisheries (e.g. at least 10% in French Guiana). This emphasises the need for regional conservation strategies to be developed at the ocean scale, both at sea and on land, to ensure the survival of the last leatherback turtles.

We present the first combined analysis of diving behaviour and dispersal patterns in gravid leatherback turtles during 3 consecutive nesting seasons in French Guiana. In total 23 turtles were fitted with Argos satellite transmitters and 16 individuals (including 6 concurrently satellite-tracked) were equipped with an electronic time-depth recorder for single inter-nesting intervals, i.e. between two consecutive ovi-positions. The leatherbacks dispersed over the continental shelf, ranging from the coastal zone to the shelf break and moved over 546.2 $\pm$ 154.1 km (mean $\pm$ SD) in waters of French Guiana and neighbouring Surinam. They mostly performed shallow (9.4 $\pm$ 9.2 m) and short (4.4 $\pm$ 3.4 min) dives with a slight diurnal pattern. They dived deeper as they moved away from the coast suggesting that they were predominantly following the seabed. Inter-nesting intervals could be divided into two phases: during the first 75% of the time turtles spent at sea, they dived on average 47 min h-1 before showing a lower and more variable diving effort as they came back to the shore. The extended movements of leatherbacks and the fine analysis of dive shapes suggest that in French Guiana leatherbacks may feed during the inter-nesting interval, probably to compensate for the energy costs associated with reproduction. This results in this endangered species being exposed to high risks of interactions with local fisheries throughout the continental shelf.
