1. Assessing the accuracy of empirical decline curve techniques for forecasting production in unconventional reservoirs: a case study of Haynesville, Marcellus, and Marcellus Upper Shale

Abstract

Abstract Decline curve analysis (DCA) is a widely used method to estimate the production performance and ultimate recovery of conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Due to the unconventional nature of shale wells, traditional decline curve methods are not ideal for analyzing their production decline behavior. In response, different empirical methods have been developed and used which rely on different mathematical and statistical approaches and can result in varying forecasts. This study compares fourteen decline curve methods, along with the traditional Arps method, in terms of their ability to match production history, sensitivity to data size, effect of flow type, production forecast, and ultimate recovery estimation. The methods were tested on three wells from Haynesville Shale (Lorikeet Field), Marcellus Shale (Ostrich Field), and Marcellus-Upper Shale (Penguin Field) respectively. The study concludes that each method may be useful in different cases, and engineers should choose the method that best models their wells based on their specific characteristics and circumstances. Recommendations were also provided for an effective evaluation of uncertainty and application of DCA. The primary objective of this study is to improve the accuracy and reliability of DCA predictions for different reservoir types with different declining modes.

3. The scale of scientific evidence behind the current ESC clinical guidelines

Abstract

Background: European Society of Cardiology (ESC) clinical practice guidelines are currently considered as an essential tool supporting many cardiologists in clinical decision-making not only in Europe but all-over the world. In this study we analyzed these recommendations regarding their class of recommendations (COR) and level of evidence (LOE) to detect how solid is the scientific background behind these recommendations. Methods: We have abstracted all the current guidelines defined as “the guidelines available on the ESC website by 01 October 2022”. All recommendations were classified according to their COR (Class I, IIa, IIb, or III) and LOE (A, B, or C). As every topic has different number of recommendations, we have used the median values in comparisons between different topics to give all the topics the same weight. Results: Current ESC guidelines consist of 37 clinical topics including a total of 4289 recommendations. Their distribution was 2140 with a median of 49.9% in Class I, Class II and Class III were 1825 with a median of 42.6% and 324 with a median of 7.5% respectively. LOE A was only present in 667(15.5%) recommendations, 1285(30%) in LOE B, while LOE C was behind the majority of the recommendations, 2337 with a median of 54.5%. Conclusion: Although ESC guidelines are considered a gold standard for management of cardiovascular diseases, but surprisingly more than half of its recommendations are based on such scientific evidence. Deficiency in clinical trials is not the same across all guideline’s topics, some are needier for clinical research.

5. Outcomes with intracoronary vs. intravenous epinephrine in cardiac arrest

Abstract

BackgroundAdvanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) guidelines recommend intravenous (IV) and intraosseous (IO) epinephrine as a basic cornerstone in the resuscitation process. Data about the efficacy and safety of intracoronary (IC) epinephrine during cardiac arrest in the catheterization laboratory are lacking.ObjectiveTo examine the efficacy and safety of IC vs. IV epinephrine for resuscitation during cardiac arrest in the catheterization laboratory.Methods and resultsThis is a prospective observational study that included all patients who experienced cardiac arrest in the cath lab at two tertiary centres in Egypt from January 2015 to July 2022. Patients were divided into two groups according to the route of epinephrine given; IC vs. IV. The primary outcome was survival to hospital discharge. Secondary outcomes included rate of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), time-to-ROSC, and favourable neurological outcome at discharge defined as modified Rankin Scale (MRS) ConclusionIn this observational study, IC epinephrine during cardiac arrest in the cath lab appeared to be safe and may be associated with improved outcomes compared with the IV route. Larger randomized studies are encouraged to confirm these results.

7. Efficacy of Distal Intracoronary Epinephrine and Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Inhibitors in the Treatment of No-reflow during Percutaneous

Abstract

Background: No-reflow is considered a major percutaneous coronary intervention complication, especially in primary PCI. A variety of medications have been studied for no-reflow treatment, including intracoronary nitrates, verapamil, adenosine, glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors, and epinephrine. Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors and epinephrine are the two most promising agents for the treatment of no-reflow. Aim of work: evaluating epinephrine and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors efficacy in treating no-reflow through local distal intracoronary injection in comparison to traditional intracoronary administration in the guiding catheter. Subjects and methods: 30 patients undergoing PCI complicated by no-reflow phenomenon. Patients were randomized to either group I where they were treated by local distal intracoronary injection of GP IIb/IIIa inhibitor and epinephrine or to group II where they received the same medications via the traditional intracoronary injection. Primary outcomes were TIMI flow, corrected TIMI frame count and TMPG, and major adverse cardiac events within 48 hours was the secondary outcome. Results: Group I had significantly superior angiographic outcomes than group II. As regards TIMI II-III flow, 86.7% of patients achieved it in versus 53.3% in group II, CTFC was 8.2versus 9.9, and in group I, 80% of patients achieved TMPG II-III, compared to 46.7 % in group II. MACE was insignificantly different between both groups. Diabetes mellitus was found to be the only predictor to be negatively associated with TIMI flow. Conclusion: Distal coronary artery local injection of a combination of GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors and epinephrine achieved superior angiographic outcomes in the treatment of refractory no-reflow in comparison with traditional intracoronary administration of the same medications.

Abstract

The use of nanofluids has been investigated and established for several applications in the oil and gas industry. Using nanoparticles for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) applications underlines their small size in comparison with the size of the rock pore throats; consequently, they could easily transport into porous rocks with minimum retention effect and permeability reduction. Nanoparticles can significantly increase the oil recovery by enhancing both the fluid properties and fluid-rock interaction properties. In this study, commercial silica nanoparticles dispersions were used in standard core flooding experiments to evaluate the effect of the nanofluid injection on the incremental oil recovery. This will open the door for taking the nanotechnology from the lab to the oil field.

Abstract

BACKGROUND There were gaps between guidelines and practice when surgery was the only treatment for aortic stenosis (AS). OBJECTIVES This study analyzed the decision to intervene in patients with severe AS in the EORP VHD (EURObservational Research Programme Valvular Heart Disease) II survey. METHODS Among 2,152 patients with severe AS, 1,271 patients with high-gradient AS who were symptomatic fulfilled a Class I recommendation for intervention according to the 2012 European Society of Cardiology guidelines; the primary end point was the decision for intervention. RESULTS A decision not to intervene was taken in 262 patients (20.6%). In multivariate analysis, the decision not to intervene was associated with older age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.34 per 10-year increase; 95% CI: 1.11 to 1.61; P = 0.002), New York Heart Association functional classes I and II versus III (OR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.16 to 2.30; P = 0.005), higher age adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (OR: 1.09 per 1-point increase; 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.17; P = 0.03), and a lower transaortic mean gradient (OR: 0.81 per 10-mm Hg decrease; 95% CI: 0.71 to 0.92; P < 0.001). During the study period, 346 patients (40.2%, median age 84 years, median EuroSCORE II [European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II] 3.1%) underwent transcatheter intervention and 515 (59.8%, median age 69 years, median EuroSCORE II 1.5%) underwent surgery. A decision not to intervene versus intervention was associated with lower 6-month survival (87.4%; 95% CI: 82.0 to 91.3 vs 94.6%; 95% CI: 92.8 to 95.9; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS A decision not to intervene was taken in 1 in 5 patients with severe symptomatic AS despite a Class I recommendation for intervention and the decision was particularly associated with older age and combined comorbidities. Abstract

Surface chemistry has a great effect in enhancing oil recovery (EOR). For oil-wet sandstone reservoirs, low salinity waterflooding (LSWF) is effective as it can alter rock wettability and reduce the oil/water interfacial tension. LSWF application is related to the rock’s clay content and type. Clay hydrocarbon bonding can be formed through many mechanisms such as van deer forces and ionic bridge. LSWF effect is to weaken these bonds through two main mechanisms, Double Layer Expansion (DLE) and Multicomponent Ionic Exchange (MIE). This research figure out the impact of LSWF application through a comparsion between two fields (S & D), in Egypt’s Western Desert, which have depleted strongly oil-wet reservoirs with similar rock & fluid Properties. Field (S) is flooded by low salinity water (LSW), while field (D) is flooded by high salinity water (HSW). Fortunately, the LSWF application was with no extra desalination cost as the water source for field (S) flooding is a LSW aquifer zone, which has a salinity +/- 5000 ppm as total dissolved solids (TDS). Water Susceptibility for Field (S) rock showed good compatibility between the injected LSW, formation water and rock minerals. XRD and SEM for field (S) indicate calcareous cementation with detrital clays content around 5% which is mainly kaolinite. This composition helps to activate the LSWF effect. For field (S), the estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) is 46%, while EUR for field (D) is 39%. One of the main causes of this increase in field (S) is the successful LSWF application.

Abstract

Background Atrial fibrillation occurs frequently after open-heart surgery. It is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, longer hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs. Prophylactic administration of colchicine may mitigate post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF). Methods We searched PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov and CENTRAL databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that; (1) compared prophylactic use of colchicine to placebo, or usual care, in patients with sinus rhythm who underwent elective open-heart surgery and (2) reported POAF-incidence. We excluded trials focused on incidence of atrial fibrillation after percutaneous interventions or colchicine treatment of diagnosed pericarditis or post-pericardiotomy-syndrome. A random-effects model was used to pool data for POAF-incidence as the primary outcome and for drug-related adverse effects, major adverse events (death and stroke), and hospital length-of-stay as secondary outcomes. Results We included five RCTs (1412 patients). Colchicine treatment reduced POAF-events by 30% versus placebo or usual care (18% vs. 27%, risk ratio (RR) 0.69, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.57 to 0.84, p = 0.0002). Adverse drug-related effects, especially gastrointestinal intolerance, increased with colchicine; (21% vs. 8.2%, RR 2.52, 95% CI 1.62 to 3.93, p < 0.0001). However, major adverse events were unchanged (3.2% vs. 3.2%, RR 0.96, 95% CI 0.48 to 1.95, p = 0.92). Length-of-stay decreased by 1.2 days with colchicine (95% CI -1.89 to − 0.44, p = 0.002). Conclusion Colchicine demonstrated superior efficacy versus usual care for prevention of atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery. Moreover, colchicine treatment was associated with shorter hospital stays. These benefits outweigh increased risk of adverse drug-related effects; although further work is needed to minimize gastrointestinal effects.

Abstract

Aims Post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) occurs in 20-50% of patients amid post-operative stay after Cardiac Surgery. We intend to determine whether colchicine therapy in patients undergoing cardiac surgery is a cost-effective strategy for prevention of POAF. To undertake cost utility analysis and calculate incremental cost utility ratio (ICUR) for colchicine therapy in these subgroup of patients. Methods and results design Decision tree model to calculate the ICUR comparing two treatment strategies in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. One wherein patients received colchicine along with usual care and second where they received placebo or just usual care. Cost utility analysis was undertaken using relevant data from the systematic review and meta-analysis of the available randomized controlled trials till June 2016 and mean cost calculations from validated available sources across various jurisdictions. Results Colchicine treatment based on mean costs for life expectancy calculated at 10 years' post-surgery using recommended discounting rates of 3.5% was € 17544.80 cheaper per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) gained. The incremental cost is negative and the incremental effect (QALY) is positive (South East quadrant), Hence the intervention of colchicine treatment is unequivocally cost-effective, meaning it is dominant and achieves better outcomes at a lower cost. Conclusion Our findings provide a benchmark for current and future analyses relating to effectiveness of colchicine on POAF events after cardiac surgery. Currently, there are few reports that provide cutting edge estimates of the higher expenses associated with POAF. Future analyses should likewise explore the impact of added costs from using pharmacologic efforts to prevent and treat POAF after cardiac surgery.

Abstract

The main objectives of this research are to estimate the oil reserves and set a development plan for Hakim Field in Libya, using three methods for calculating OOIP which are Volumetric (Monte Carlo), Decline curve analysis (DCA), Material Balance Equation, and establish the optimum development plan for Hakim field. Results showed that the OOIP of Hakim Field, calculated by volumetric method done through Monte Carlo tool given 90.2 MM STBO for Proven Reserves (1P) , 115.5 MM STBO for Probable reserves (2P) and 147.0 MM STBO for Possible reserves (3P). While OOIP estimated by Decline curve analysis given 82.4MM STBO for Proven Reserves (1P) , 102.8MM STBO for Probable reserves (2P) and 114.9MM STBO for Possible reserves (3P), and 112.18 MM STBO for Probable reserves (2P) by Material Balance. In addition, 14 prediction scenarios have been applied on the Material Balance Model to establish the optimum Field development Plan, results showed that from simulation model the optimal scenario is 8 Producing Wells, 4 Water Injector Wells and 8000 BWPD.

Abstract

The pressure of a reservoir is one of the most important parameters that is needed to calculate the hydrocarbon accumulation. Once the reservoir pressure is estimated, the fluid properties can be obtained via different correlations. Combined with the reservoir bulk volumes, the hydrocarbons in-place and recovery factor can be easily calculated. Consequently, if the estimate of the reservoir pressure is not accurate enough, it will be extremely difficult to determine the type of fluid we are dealing with; either saturated or undersaturated oil reservoir. In addition, it will be very challenging to accurately forecast production performance. During the last decades, the technology of Hydraulic fracturing plays one of the most important rule in the petroleum industry. It has become the magic tool for many companies to change the fields’ status from non-economic to economic. The objectives of fracturing low permeability reservoirs and high permeability reservoirs are variant and defined by reservoir parameters. Besides that, hydraulic fracture provides a new method to determine reservoir pressure and to estimate reservoir permeability, this method is called After Closure Analysis (ACA) Technique. ACA is one of the two analyses that are obtained by performing a Calibration Test, which is usually done before executing main hydraulic job. The two main analyses of Calibration Test are Pre-Closure analysis, which is used to optimize the fracture design, and ACA to determine reservoir pressure and estimate reservoir permeability. This paper illustrates some real cases that show the reasons why ACA is considered a very reliable technique to accurately determine the reservoir parameters with no considerable amount of funds compared to other counterparts’ traditional techniques; like wireline formation testing (WFT) and pressure transient analysis (PTA). Also the paper shows how extra cost and non-productive time can be avoided if the right parameters are gotten on the rig site.

Abstract

Kinematic viscosities of twelve mixtures made from pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, decane, and carbon dioxide were measured using a rolling ball viscometer. The temperatures ranged from 310 K to 403 K and the pressures from 0.8 MPa to 12 MPa. Kinematic viscosities were converted to absolute viscosities using mixture densities estimated from a modified Rackett equation. Calculated absolute viscosities for the decane + CO2 system were within 0.5% of the values by Cullick and Mathis. All viscosities of hydrocarbon mixtures and hydrocarbons with CO2 could be predicted from the Orbey and Sandler correlation with an average absolute deviation of 4.1%. We found that the Lohrenz, Bray, and Clark viscosity correlation cannot be used to estimate the viscosity of the mixtures containing CO2 with reasonable accuracy.
