This study investigated a possible relationship between preoperative gastric volume (GV) measured by CT volumetry and weight loss one year after LSG.Methods: This prospective study included 120 patients scheduled for LSG. 3D CT gastric volumetry was done before surgery. The weight loss in the first year was serially recorded. The primary outcome measure was the correlation between preoperative GV and postoperative weight loss after one year. The secondary outcomes were the correlation between preoperative GV and other patients’ characteristics as age and body mass index (BMI).Results: Weight and BMI decreased significantly up to 12 months. The percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL) at 6 and 12 months was significantly higher than at three months. Preoperative GV was 1021 ± 253, ranging from 397 to 1543 mL. GV was not related to sex, age, weight, height, postoperative weight, and BMI.Conclusion: Preoperative gastric volume cannot predict weight loss one year after LSG. Because of the huge size of the common wheat (Triticum aestivum L., 2n = 6x = 42, AABBDD) genome of 17,300 Mb, sequencing and mapping of the expressed portion is a logical first step for gene discovery. Here we report mapping of 7104 expressed sequence tag (EST) unigenes by Southern hybridization into a chromosome bin map using a set of wheat aneuploids and deletion stocks. Each EST detected a mean of 4.8 restriction fragments and 2.8 loci. More loci were mapped in the B genome (5774) than in the A (5173) or D (5146) genomes. The EST density was significantly higher for the D genome than for the A or B. In general, EST density increased relative to the physical distance from the centromere. The majority of EST-dense regions are in the distal parts of chromosomes. Most of the agronomically important genes are located in EST-dense regions. The chromosome bin map of ESTs is a unique resource for SNP analysis, comparative mapping, structural and functional analysis, and polyploid evolution, as well as providing a framework for constructing a sequence-ready, BAC-contig map of the wheat genome.

A total of 1918 loci, detected by the hybridization of 938 expressed sequence tag unigenes (ESTs) from 26 Triticeae cDNA libraries, were mapped to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) homoeologous group 4 chromosomes using a set of deletion, ditelosomic, and nulli-tetrasomic lines. The 1918 EST loci were not distributed uniformly among the three group 4 chromosomes; 41, 28, and 31% mapped to chromosomes 4A, 4B, and 4D, respectively. This pattern is in contrast to the cumulative results of EST mapping in all homoeologous groups, as reported elsewhere, that found the highest proportion of loci mapped to the B genome. Sixty-five percent of these 1918 loci mapped to the long arms of homoeologous group 4 chromosomes, while 35% mapped to the short arms. The distal regions of chromosome arms showed higher numbers of loci than the proximal regions, with the exception of 4DL. This study confirmed the complex structure of chromosome 4A that contains two reciprocal translocations and two inversions, previously identified. An additional inversion in the centromeric region of 4A was revealed. A consensus map for homoeologous group 4 was developed from 119 ESTs unique to group 4. Forty-nine percent of these ESTs were found to be homoeologous to sequences on rice chromosome 3, 12% had matches with sequences on other rice chromosomes, and 39% had no matches with rice sequences at all. Limited homology (only 26 of the 119 consensus ESTs) was found between wheat ESTs on homoeologous group 4 and the Arabidopsis genome. Forty-two percent of the homoeologous group 4 ESTs could be classified into functional categories on the basis of blastX searches against all protein databases.

This report describes the rationale, approaches, organization, and resource development leading to a large-scale deletion bin map of the hexaploid (2n = 6x = 42) wheat genome (Triticum aestivum L.). Accompanying reports in this issue detail results from chromosome bin-mapping of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) representing genes onto the seven homoeologous chromosome groups and a global analysis of the entire mapped wheat EST data set. Among the resources developed were the first extensive public wheat EST collection (113,220 ESTs). Described are protocols for sequencing, sequence processing, EST nomenclature, and the assembly of ESTs into contigs. These contigs plus singletons (unassembled ESTs) were used for selection of distinct sequence motif unigenes. Selected ESTs were rearrayed, validated by 5' and 3' sequencing, and amplified for probing a series of wheat aneuploid and deletion stocks. Images and data for all Southern hybridizations were deposited in databases and were used by the coordinators for each of the seven homoeologous chromosome groups to validate the mapping results. Results from this project have established the foundation for future developments in wheat genomics.

A total of 944 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) generated 2212 EST loci mapped to homoeologous group 1 chromosomes in hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). EST deletion maps and the consensus map of group 1 chromosomes were constructed to show EST distribution. EST loci were unevenly distributed among chromosomes 1A, 1B, and 1D with 660, 826, and 726, respectively. The number of EST loci was greater on the long arms than on the short arms for all three chromosomes. The distribution of ESTs along chromosome arms was nonrandom with EST clusters occurring in the distal regions of short arms and middle regions of long arms. Duplications of group 1 ESTs in other homoeologous groups occurred at a rate of 35.5%. Seventy-five percent of wheat chromosome 1 ESTs had significant matches with rice sequences (E < or = e(-10)), where large regions of conservation occurred between wheat consensus chromosome 1 and rice chromosome 5 and between the proximal portion of the long arm of wheat consensus chromosome 1 and rice chromosome 10. Only 9.5% of group 1 ESTs showed significant matches to Arabidopsis genome sequences. The results presented are useful for gene mapping and evolutionary and comparative genomics of grasses.

Background: The racial diversity portrayed in plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) media is an important indicator of an inclusive environment for potential patients. To evaluate the degree to which PRS websites demonstrate inclusivity, we assessed the racial composition of both patients and plastic surgeons depicted on the most visited academic and private PRS websites to determine the extent to which racial diversity is represented., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in September 2023. The 10 most visited websites in each state were identified. Sociodemographic characteristics including race and sex of patients and plastic surgeons, as well as the type of practice, were collected. Race was classified according to individuals' Fitzpatrick Phototypes into White and non-White. Differences in patient and surgeon representation were compared to the 2020 US Census and the 2020 ASPS demographics using χ 2 tests. Subgroup analyses were conducted to identify differences by type of practice and region., Results: We analyzed a total of 2,752 patients from 462 websites belonging to 930 plastic surgeons. PRS websites were predominantly from private practices (93%). Regarding patient representation, 92.6% were female, 7.4% were male, 87.6% were White, and 12.4% were non-White. The surgeon population on the studied webpages was 75.1% male, 92.1% White, and 7.8% non-White. Statistically significant differences were found in the patient population when compared to the 2020 national ( P < 0.001) and regional ( P < 0.001) US Census demographics and the 2020 ASPS Statistics Report ( P < 0.001). Although minority representation was significantly higher on academic websites compared to private practice (22.9% vs. 12.1%; P = 0.007), both were significantly lower than the percentage of minority patients undergoing PRS., Conclusions: This study illuminates racial disparities in the representation of racial groups among patients and plastic surgeons in the most frequented plastic surgery websites. Moreover, it underscores the imperative to bolster racial diversity within the digital content of both private and academic PRS websites. Background: Environmental pollutants, particularly heavy metals, have been frequently connected to male infertility. Cadmium was previously shown to reduce male fertility by causing oxidative stress. Anacyclus pyrethrum is a well-known medicinal plant. Most of its parts, notably the roots, have excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The present study investigated the potential ability of Anacyclus pyrethrum to protect male rats against cadmium reproductive toxicity., Methods: Twenty-eight adult Wistar male rats (8 weeks old) weighing (170-200g) were randomly divided into four groups (n = 7): group (1) the control, group (2) was orally administrated with Anacyclus pyrethrum extract (100mg/kg) for 56 consecutive days, group (3) received a single intraperitoneal (IP) injection of cadmium chloride (1mg/kg), and group (4) received a single IP dose of CdCl 2 followed by 8 weeks of oral Anacyclus extract treatment., Results: Cadmium Cd toxicity resulted in a significant decrease in the concentration of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase SOD and glutathione peroxidase GPx) in the semen coupled with a significant rise in malondialdehyde MDA level. Consequently, sperm analysis parameters were significantly affected showing decreased motility, viability, concentration and increased morphological aberrations. DNA fragmentation was also detected in the sperms of rats exposed to Cd using comet assay. Serum levels of testosterone T, follicle stimulating hormone FSH, and luteinizing hormone LH were significantly decreased. The mRNA expression levels of sex hormone receptors (FSHR, LHR and AR) in the testis of the Cd exposed rats were significantly decreased. Expression levels of Bax and Bcl2 genes in the sperms of Cd intoxicated rats were also affected shifting the Bax/Bcl2 ratio towards the induction of apoptosis. Co-treatment with the Anacyclus pyrethrum extract restored the oxidative enzymes activities and decreased the formation of lipid peroxidation byproduct, which in turn ameliorated the effect of Cd on sperm parameters, sperm DNA damage, circulating hormone levels, gene expression and apoptosis. These results indicate that Anacyclus pyrethrum could serve as a protective agent against cadmium-induced sperm toxicity., Conclusion: Taken together, it can be concluded that the antioxidant activities of Anacyclus pyrethrum restored the semen quality and enhanced fertility in Cd-intoxicated male rats., Competing Interests: Declarations. High-density cement slurries used in oil well cementing often face challenges such as particle settling, poor rheological properties, permeability, and compressive strength degradation, which can compromise zonal isolation and well integrity. This study focuses on using kaolinite, a clay mineral, as an additive due to its potential to improve the performance of high-density cement by modifying key properties. Several concentrations of kaolinite were examined to evaluate their influence on several cement properties such as rheology, thickening time, permeability, porosity, and compressive strength. Additionally, it assesses the impact of kaolinite on cement sheath solids settling using both conventional methods and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results revealed that an optimal concentration of 1% kaolinite by weight of cement (BWOC) significantly reduced particle settling by 74.4%, enhanced compressive strength by 13%, and lowered permeability and porosity by 74% and 7%, respectively. Additionally, kaolinite improved rheological properties by an 8.4% reduction in plastic viscosity, a 19.4% increase in yield point, and a 30% increase in gel strength. Kaolinite also acted as a retarder, increasing thickening time. These improvements contribute to better cement sheath integrity and wellbore stability, highlighting kaolinite's potential as an effective additive for high-density cement., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

In this study, four Artificial intelligence (AI) - based machine learning models were developed to estimate the Residual compressive strength (RCS) value of concrete supported with nano additives of Nanocarbon tubes (NCTs) and Nano alumina (NAl), after exposure to elevated temperatures ranging from 200 to 800 degrees. These models were developed via adapting meta- heuristic models including the Water cycle algorithm (WCA), Genetic algorithm (GA), and classical AI models of Artificial neural networks (ANNs), Fuzzy logic models (FLM), in addition to the statistical method of Multiple linear regression (MLR). 156 post heating experimental results available as a literature data (represents four input parameters of temperature change, heat exposure duration, nanomaterial type, and replacement proportion) are used to achieve the study's objective. Results of the developed models demonstrated that ANN and FLM have strong potential in predicting RCS. However, it is often infeasible to generate practical equations that relate input and output variables from these models. Upon analysing the results of the WCA and GA, it was found that WCA yielded the most accurate predictions based on all performance indicators. Furthermore, RCS prediction equations with superior accuracy were derived utilizing the meta-heuristic AI models of WCA and GA, with Mean absolute errors (MAEs) of 3.09 kg/cm² and 3.53 kg/cm² for the training, 1.91 kg/cm² and 2.72 kg/cm² for the validation, and 1.91 kg/cm² and 2.72 kg/cm² for the testing data sets, respectively. Additionally, sensitivity analysis via neural networks weights and SHAP investigation were performed to reveals the impact and relationship of the input variables with the output variables. Activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and unfractionated heparin (UFH) level via the anti-factor Xa activity assay (anti-Xa) are commonly used assays for UFH monitoring. While discordance between the two assays is common, its impact on critically ill patient outcomes is unclear. This study aimed to compare the incidence of major bleeding events among critically ill patients with discordant aPTT and anti-Xa activity while on UFH, to patients with no discordance. This was a single-center, retrospective cohort study of critically ill adult patients who had simultaneous anti-Xa and aPTT levels while receiving continuous UFH infusion. The primary outcome was the incidence of a major bleeding event up to 24 h after UFH discontinuation. Secondary outcomes included incidence of 30-day thrombosis and hospital length of stay (LOS). Among 264 included patients, 156 patients (59%) had at least one discordant paired level. Patients with discordance had an increased risk of major bleeding events (14% versus 5%; unadjusted risk ratio, 3.0; 95% CI 1.2-7.8; p = 0.01), and increased risk of thrombotic events (4% versus 0%; p = 0.04). Hospital LOS was similar between the two groups (13.8 days versus 11.4 days; p = 0.08). In this cohort of critically ill patients receiving continuous UFH, discordance in aPTT and anti-Xa activity was frequently observed and was associated with an increased risk of major bleeding events. While both assays remain viable monitoring options, evaluating simultaneous levels may aid in the management of critically ill patients. Objective: This study examined the impact of a short-term study abroad program, focusing on program evaluation, attendee satisfaction, and acquired knowledge and skills. A questionnaire survey was conducted covering various aspects including demographics, program evaluation, and feedback., Results: Results indicated higher female participation due to gender imbalances in pharmacy students in Egypt, with senior students recognizing the value of international experience. Attendee satisfaction was high, with positive feedback on accommodation, tours, and workshop materials. Field visits and workshops provided valuable experiential learning, with attendees suggesting extending the program's duration. The program equipped attendees with knowledge and skills relevant to pharmaceutical products and services, leading to improved competences and perceptions. The study concludes that such study abroad experiences profoundly impact personal growth and recommends integrating them into educational curricula for valuable experiences., (© 2024. Background: Racial and ethnic disparities have been extensively reported across surgical specialties, highlighting existing healthcare inequities. Nevertheless, evidence is lacking regarding their influence on postoperative outcomes after head and neck reconstruction. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of race and ethnicity on postoperative complications in head and neck microvascular reconstruction., Methods: The ACS-NSQIP database was used to identify patients who underwent head and neck microvascular reconstruction between 2012 and 2022. Baseline characteristics were compared based on race (White, non-White) and ethnicity (Hispanic, non-Hispanic). Group differences were assessed using t tests and Fisher Exact tests. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed to evaluate postoperative complications between the groups. A Cochran-Armitage test was conducted to evaluate the significance of trends over time., Results: A total of 11,373 patients met inclusion criteria. Among them, 9,082 participants reported race, and 9,428 reported ethnicity. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that Hispanic patients were more likely to experience 30-day readmission (OR 6.7; 95% CI, 1.17-38.4; P=0.032) and had an average total length of stay of 5.25 days longer (95% CI, 0.84-9.65; P=0.020) compared with non-Hispanic patients. Additional subgroup analyses revealed higher rates of all readmissions among non-White patients, particularly those indicated by malignancy (OR 1.23; 95% CI, 1.1-1.4; P=0.002). No significant differences were found in mortality, reoperation rates, and operative times between racial and ethnic groups., Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that ethnicity may be a significant risk factor for readmission in head and neck microvascular reconstruction. Background: Gender disparities in plastic surgery authorship have been previously described in the literature. The relative citation ratio (RCR) index is a new metric that normalizes citation rates for field and time, which can be utilized to compare authors. This study aims to evaluate differences in gender authorship in reconstructive microsurgery (RM) papers, as well as the impact of gender on the RCR index., Methods: A PubMed query isolated RM studies between 2002 and 2020 across the 3 highest impact PS journals. Author names and RCR information were collected from NIH iCite. The likely gender was adjudicated by using NamSor-Software. Unpaired Wilcoxon rank-sum and chi-square tests were used to assess differences between groups., Results: Of 1146 articles (2172 authors), there was a significant difference between the proportion of females as senior authors compared to first authors ( P < 0.001). Overall, females represented 15.4% of all authors, 19.7% of first authors, and 11.3% of senior authors. Males had a significantly higher weighted RCR ( P < 0.0001) and number of publications ( P < 0.0001), which remained significant when stratified by first and senior author. Female authors collectively had a higher mean RCR ( P = 0.008) and among first authors ( P < 0.0001), with no significant difference among senior authors ( P = 0.47)., Conclusion: A considerably greater number of males are publishing in reconstructive microsurgery compared to females, with significantly more males being senior authors compared to first authors. Males had higher weighted RCR scores and publications compared to females. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) represents cardiometabolic dysregulation, defined by hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. There remains a significant gap in our understanding of whether MetS impacts outcomes of abdominal body contouring procedures. We aimed to assess the influence of MetS on postoperative outcomes of abdominal body contouring by concurrent abdominoplasty and panniculectomy., Methods: The ACS-NSQIP database was utilized to identify patients who underwent concurrent abdominoplasty and panniculectomy procedures from 2012 to 2022. Through propensity score matching, distinct cohorts were established based on the presence of MetS, characterized by patients receiving medical interventions for diabetes mellitus and hypertension, with a body mass index exceeding 30 kg/m 2 . Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to evaluate differences between groups., Results: A total of 14,642 patients underwent abdominal body contouring from 2012 to 2022. Following propensity score matching, 730 patients were included in the analysis, with 365 in each group (MetS vs. non-MetS). Bivariate analysis revealed a longer hospital length of stay (2.3 vs. 1.6 days; p = 0.007) in the MetS cohort compared to the non-MetS cohort. Patients diagnosed with MetS had an average length of stay of 0.6 days longer than non-MetS patients (95% CI [0.17, 1.01]; p = 0.007). No noteworthy disparities were observed in the rates of 30-day wound complications, mild systemic, and severe systemic complications, and readmission rates between the groups., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that abdominal body contouring remains a secure option for patients with MetS. Nonetheless, the longer hospital length stays observed in patients with MetS may translate to increased overall costs to the healthcare system. Background: Beta-thalassemia major (β-TM) patients are more likely to experience blood glucose intolerance and to date; the blood markers that could evaluate this are debatable. So, this study aimed to assess the roles of glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fructosamine in evaluating glucose intolerance in children with β-TM and figuring out role of insulin resistance in these patients., Methods: One hundred children diagnosed with β-TM and 100 age and sex-matched controls were enrolled. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h post-prandial blood glucose (2-h PG), HbA1c, fructosamine, fasting insulin level (FINS), insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), and insulin sensitivity index (HOMA-IS) were evaluated., Results: FPG and 2-h PG revealed glucose intolerance in 51 patients (51%), 19 of them had diabetes mellitus. HbA1c, fructosamine, FINS, and HOMA-IR showed a high statistically significant increase in patients compared to controls, (P < 0.001). Results revealed fructosamine was more specific in detecting prediabetes state and more sensitive in identifying diabetes mellitus in our patients when compared to HbA1c., Conclusions: Despite controversies on HbA1c in children with β-TM, it is still valuable in glucose intolerance detection. Fructosamine showed more sensitivity and specificity. Furthermore, insulin resistance was prevalent in children with β-TM highlighting the necessity of regular glycemic state evaluation., Impact: Glucose intolerance is a common complication in beta thalassemia patients. Conflicting data was reported about the role of HbA1c and fructosamine in evaluating glucose intolerance in thalassemic patients. Fructosamine does not yet have a threshold that may be used to distinguish between patients who have diabetes mellitus and those who do not. Fructosamine was more specific in detecting blood glucose intolerance compared to HbA1c and was more sensitive for diagnosing diabetes mellitus. Sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) is a health complication, encompassing excessive inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and tubular necrosis; leading to kidney failure and death. Sepsis treatments are nonspecific and palliative. In this study, we evaluated the effect of morin, a flavonoid with known nephroprotective capabilities, on sepsis-induced AKI by dividing eighty male mice into: normal, morin-treated, septic, and septic mice treated with morin. Half of the groups were sacrified 3 days post sepsis induction, while the rest was sacrified on the 7th day. Treating septic mice with morin resulted in the amelioration of sepsis-associated pathophysiological renal alterations and the increase of the survival and recovery rates compared with those of septic control group. These findings indicate that morin has a therapeutic effect against sepsis-associated AKI via its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and regenerative effects. Background: The popularity of cosmetic tourism may increase unnecessary risks for patients as postoperative care is variable. However, little is known about the current trends and public perception of this growing phenomenon. This study compares interest in cosmetic tourism in popular medical tourism destinations relative to the US., Methods: Google Trends was queried from October 2017 to September 2023, examining trends over the full period and dissecting changes between 2017-2020 and 2020-2023. Search volume data were retrieved for the top international countries and the US for each of the top five cosmetic procedures, according to the ISAPS 2022 Global Survey. A p value < 0.05 was used for statistical significance., Results: Searches for liposuction, blepharoplasty, breast augmentation, mastopexy, and abdominoplasty were compared between the US, Mexico, Turkey, Thailand, and Colombia. Google Trends data mirrored the prevalence of the two most common procedures, liposuction, and breast augmentation. Differences in interest regarding liposuction were greatest in Mexico, Thailand, and Turkey compared to the US (p < 0.05). Medical tourism for blepharoplasty had the highest search interest scores for Turkey and Thailand from 2017 to 2023 (p < 0.05). Significant differences were also consistent across all time intervals for breast augmentation, mastopexy, and abdominoplasty, with higher interest in Mexico and Turkey (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Google Trends analysis serves as an insightful tool for understanding cosmetic tourism. This study investigates the individual and combined effects of enhancing the radiation shielding properties of waste concrete using the optimal mix design of two waste material powders of different compositions. Marble (MD) and granite (GD) waste dust were individually utilized as partial replacements for cement at a replacement ratio of 6%. Furthermore, two additional mixes were prepared by incorporating 1% by cement weight of nano alumina (NA) to enhance the microstructure of the studied waste concrete. The MGA-concrete was analyzed using X-ray Fluorescence, Energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscope techniques. The radiation shielding assets of the examined Concrete samples, such as the linear attenuation coefficient (μ), half value layer (H 1/2 ), tenth value layer (T 1/10 ), and fast neutron removal cross-section were evaluated using the MCS5 Monte Carlo simulation algorithm and Phy-X software. The results showed that the linear attenuation for the GMN-concretes' order is CO < MD < GD < NA < MD + NA < GD + NA. The GD + Na concrete sample presents the best neutron performance. The studied GMN-concrete samples provide the best protection against γ-rays and fast neutrons. Lastly, the excellent performance of the mixes of waste Granite, Marble, and Nano-Alumina on ordinary would pave the way for their employment as radiation shielding in various nuclear and medical facilities., (© 2024. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a worldwide public health challenge. Accumulating evidence implicates elevated serum ferritin and disruptions in iron metabolism as potential elements linked to an increased risk of MetS. This study investigates the relationship between iron homeostasis-including hepcidin levels, serum iron concentration, unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC), and the hepcidin/ferritin (H/F) ratio-and MetS. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 209 participants aged 24-70 were categorized into two groups: 103 with MetS and 106 without MetS. All participants underwent medical assessment, including anthropometric measures, indices of glycemic control, lipid profiles, and iron-related parameters. Participants were further stratified by the Homeostasis Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance index into three subgroups: insulin-sensitive (IS) (<1.9), early insulin resistance (EIR) (>1.9 to <2.9), and significant insulin resistance (SIR) (>2.9). Notable increments in serum ferritin and hepcidin were observed in the SIR group relative to the IS and EIR groups, with a significant association between metabolic parameters. The UIBC and serum ferritin emerged as significant predictors of MetS, particularly in men, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.753 and 0.792, respectively ( p ≤ 0.001). In contrast, hepcidin was notably correlated with MetS in women, with an AUC of 0.655 ( p = 0.007). The H/F ratio showed superior predictive capability for MetS across both sexes (at cutoff level = 0.67). Among women, this ratio had an AUC of 0.639 ( p = 0.015), and for men, it had an AUC of 0.792 ( p < 0.001). Hypertension proved an independent risk factor for MetS, affirming its role in metabolic dysregulation. The findings highlight a significant interconnection between iron homeostasis parameters and MetS, with sex-specific variations underscoring the importance of personalized diagnostic criteria. The crucial role of the H/F ratio and the UIBC as emerging predictive markers for MetS indicates their potential utility in identifying at-risk individuals. Further longitudinal research is essential to establish causality and explore the interplay between these biomarkers and MetS.

Background: Despite a well-known dose-dependent association between the risk of cardiac dysfunction and anthracycline, the risk of cardiac dysfunction for any given anthracycline dose varies between patients. So, we assessed CELF4 (rs1786814) gene polymorphism on anthracycline-related cardiotoxicity in childhood cancer survivors (CCS)., Methods: This comparative cross-sectional study included 53 CCS who had regular follow-up visits at the Pediatric Oncology Unit, Menoufia University Hospital. CELF4 (rs1786814) gene polymorphism and conventional and speckle-tracking Echocardiography were done for all survivors., Results: Regarding CELF4 (rs1786814) genotypes, significant differences existed between the studied groups with a predominance of GG homozygous mutation. For Echocardiographic findings, the ejection fraction and end-systolic diameter compared to the control group, were significantly lower in the survivors group. Speckle- tracking Echocardiography showed a significant difference regarding (GLPS-A4C) and (GLPS-LAX), with no significant difference regarding (GLPS-A2C), (GLPS-Avg) and left atrium between the studied groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis illustrated a statistically significant relation between cumulative anthracycline dose >300 mg/m 2 and CLEF4 (rs1786814) genotypes (GG and GA) and the risk of cardiotoxicity with more significance in GG mutation., Conclusion: Early detection of ventricular dysfunction in CCS with subclinical cardiotoxicity with regular follow-up is promising before the development of life-threatening complications., Impact: Early detection of anthracycline-related cardiotoxicity in childhood cancer survivors (CCS) after finishing chemotherapy. Background: The scapular free flap (SFF) is essential in complex reconstructive surgery and often indicated in complex defects with compromised or poor local tissue integrity. This review aims to assess the versatility and reliability of the SFF during reconstruction., Methods: A comprehensive literature review of multiple databases was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. An analysis of pooled data was performed to evaluate flap failure rate for any anatomical unit using SFF as the primary endpoints. Secondary endpoints included other complication rates after reconstruction such as partial flap loss, revision surgery, fistula, hematoma, and infection., Results: A total of 110 articles were included, with 1447 pooled flaps. The main recipient site was the head and neck region (89.0%). Major indications for reconstruction were malignancy (55.3%), burns (19.2%), and trauma (9.3%). The most common types of flaps were osteocutaneous (23.3%), cutaneous (22.6%), and chimeric (18.0%). The pooled flap failure rate was 2% (95%CI: 1%-4%). No significant heterogeneity was present across studies (Q statistic 20.2, p = .69; I 2 .00%, p = .685). Nonscapular supplementary flaps and grafts were required in 61 cases. The average length and surface area of bone flaps were 7.2 cm and 24.8cm 2 , respectively. The average skin paddle area was 134.2cm 2 ., Conclusion: The SFF is a useful adjunct in the reconstructive surgeon's armamentarium as evidence by its intrinsic versatility and diverse clinical indications. Our data suggest a low failure rate in multicomponent defect reconstruction, especially in head and neck surgery. SFFs enable incorporation of multiple tissue types and customizable dimensions-both for vascularized bone and cutaneous skin-augmenting its value in the microsurgeon's repertoire as a chimeric flap. Breast cancer is among the most prevalent tumors worldwide. In this study, in-situ forming implants (ISFIs) containing rosuvastatin calcium were prepared using three types of poly (D, L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), namely, PLGA 50/50 with ester terminal and PLGA 75/25 with ester or acid terminal. Additionally, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was added in concentrations of 0, 10, 20, and 30% w/v to accelerate matrix formation. The prepared ISFIs were characterized for their rheological behaviors, rate of matrix formation, and in-vitro drug release. All the prepared formulations revealed a Newtonian flow with a matrix formation rate between 0.017 and 0.059 mm/min. Generally, increasing the concentration of PDMS increased the matrix formation rate. The prepared implants' release efficiency values ranged between 46.39 and 89.75%. The ISFI containing PLGA 50/50 with 30% PDMS was selected for further testing, as it has the highest matrix formation rate and a promising release efficiency value. Copper-selenium nanoparticles were prepared with two different particle sizes (560 and 383 nm for CS1 and CS2, respectively) and loaded into the selected formulation to enhance its anticancer activity. The unloaded and loaded implants with rosuvastatin and copper-selenium nanoparticles were evaluated for their antibacterial activity, against Gram-positive and negative microorganisms, and anticancer efficacy, against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines. The results confirmed the potency of rosuvastatin calcium against cancer cells and the synergistic effect when loaded with smaller particle sizes of copper-selenium nanoparticles. The rising demand for safe plant compounds and herbal products that contribute positively to human health is in line with current market trends. Plants belonging to the Satureja genus, particularly the aromatic medicinal S. montana L. from the Lamiaceae family, are well suited to these trends as they serve as pharmaceutical raw materials. This research aimed to assess the influence of sowing date and fertilization doses, as well as their interaction, on the fresh weight, essential oil content, and composition of S. montana . Experimental cultivation involved varying nitrogen and phosphorus levels. The second cut had the highest fresh weight and oil production compared to the first cut. The highest total plant biomass was achieved with autumn sowing and fertilization at 55 kg N/ha and 37 kg P/ha, whereas Spring sowing exhibited higher essential oil production, with the maximum oil % with 74 kg P/ha and oil yield after applying 55 kg N/ha and 74 kg P/ha. The GC-MS analysis revealed that carvacrol was the predominant compound, with it being recommended to grow S. montana in Spring at doses of 55 kg N/ha and 74 kg P/ha for the superior oil yield. Additionally, S. montana essential oil demonstrated notable biological and antimicrobial activity, positioning it as a potential alternative to chemical food preservatives.

Objectives: Resveratrol (Res) is a bifunctional compound found in numerous plants, including grapes and mulberries. Nanotechnology has promising applications in medicine. The ability of various nanomaterials to serve as radiosensitizers against tumor cells were reported in several manuscripts. The present investigation aimed to assess the antitumor and radiosensitizing effects of Res-CMCNPs on EAC-bearing mice.

Silver and titanium-silver nanoparticles have unique properties that make the textile industry progress through the high quality of textiles. Preparation of AgNPs and TiO 2 -Ag core-shell nanoparticles in different concentrations (0.01% and 0.1% OWF) and applying it to cotton fabrics (Giza 88 and Giza 94) by using succinic acid 5%/SHP as a cross-linking agent. Ultra-violet visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) are tools for AgNPs and TiO 2 -AgNPs characterization and the treated cotton. The resulting AgNPs and TiO 2 -AgNPs were added to cotton fabrics at different concentrations. The antimicrobial activities, UV protection, self-cleaning, and the treated fabrics' mechanical characteristics were investigated. Silver nanoparticles and titanium dioxide-silver nanoparticles core-shell were prepared to be used in the treatment of cotton fabrics to improve their UV protection properties, self-cleaning, elongation and strength, as well as the antimicrobial activities to use the produced textiles for medical and laboratory uses and to increase protection for medical workers taking into account the spread of infection. The results demonstrated that a suitable distribution of prepared AgNPs supported the spherical form. Additionally, AgNPs and TiO 2 -AgNPs have both achieved stability, with values of (- 20.8 mV and - 30 mV, respectively). The synthesized nanoparticles spread and penetrated textiles' surfaces with efficiency. The findings demonstrated the superior UV protection value (UPF 50+) and self-cleaning capabilities of AgNPs and TiO 2 -AgNPs. In the treatment with 0.01% AgNPs and TiO 2 -AgNPs, the tensile strength dropped, but the mechanical characteristics were enhanced by raising the concentration to 0.1%. Background: The trans-sphenoidal approach, commonly used for removing pituitary adenomas, has become a widely accepted and successful method. In recent years, the endoscopic trans-sphenoidal technique has emerged as a minimally invasive surgical approach for pituitary adenoma removal. The majority of pituitary adenomas exhibit a soft consistency and can be successfully extracted with aspiration and curettage using the trans-sphenoidal approach. However, a subset of around 5-15% of these adenomas possess a solid and fibrous texture. The occurrence of firm and fibrous adenomas is relatively common; unfortunately, there are no reliable predictors to identify them preoperatively., Objectives: The ability to forecast the reliability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) holds promise for improving prior preparation and impacts the extent of resection., Design: A cross-sectional analysis of the investigation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in relation to cancer histology was performed on 68 patients who had endoscopic trans-nasal excision for nonfunctional adenomas., Materials and Methods: The determination of an intensity ratio was performed by employing quantitative estimates of MRI signal intensity obtained from both the adenoma and pons. During the surgical procedure, a series of sequential-graded procedures were used for the removal of tumours with varying consistencies. Softer tumours were addressed using the Suction technique (R1), while tumours of intermediate consistency were treated using curettes (R2). In order to evaluate the fibrotic content of firmer tumours, the utilization of Cavitron Ultrasound Surgical Aspirator (CUSA), and/or other micro-instruments (R3) was employed, with the histologic collagen fraction being quantified. In order to investigate and analyse the data, a statistical analysis was conducted. A predictive relationship between resection category and both intensity ratio, and collagen percentage was noted. Potassium bromate is used in cheese production, beer making and is also used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic. It is a proven carcinogen as it is a strong oxidizing agent that generates free radicals during xenobiotic metabolism. Urtica dioica (Ud) (from the plants' family of Urticaceae) is a plant that has long been used as a medicinal plant in many parts of the world. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunosuppressive properties. So, this study aimed to clarify the effect of Potassium bromate on the histological structure of cerebral cortex of adult male albino rats, evaluate the possible protective role of Urtica dioica. Thirty adult healthy male albino rats were divided into three groups; group I (Control group), group II (KBrO3 treated group). Group III (KBrO3 and Urtica dioica treated group).At the end of the experiment, rats in all groups were anesthetized and specimens were processed for light and electron microscope. Morphometric and statistical analyses were also performed. Nerve cells of the treated group showed irregular contours, dark nuclei, irregular nuclear envelopes, dilated RER cisternae, and mitochondria with ruptured cristae. Vacuolated neuropil was also observed. Immunohistochemically, stained sections for GFAP showed strong positive reaction in the processes of astrocytes. Recovery group showed revealed nearly the same as the histological picture as the control group. In conclusion, potassium bromate induces degenerative effects on neurons of cerebral cortex and urtica dioica provide an important neuroprotective effects against these damaging impacts through their antioxidant properties.

Introduction: Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been believed to be associated with the novel COVID-19 infection, and also with the following vaccines developed against the infection. Our work aims to investigate the incidence of GBS after COVID-19 vaccination, and describe its clinical characteristics and potential confounders., Methods: An electronic search was conducted through four databases: PubMed, Scopus, medRxiv, and Google Scholar for all case reports and case series describing after COVID-19 vaccine administration. All published articles from inception until November 1st, 2022 were included. Differences between groups were assessed using Pearson chi-square test. Modified Erasmus GBS Outcome Score (mEGOS) for the ability to walk after GBS was calculated for all cases with sufficient clinical data, and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to study the effect of vaccine type on the relationship between vaccination time and complication of GBS., Results: About 103 studies describing 175 cases of GBS following COVID-19 vaccination were included. The Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy subtype was the most reported subtype with 74 cases (42.29%). The affected age group averaged around 53.59 ±18.83 years, with AMSAN occurring in a rather older group (63.88 ±20.87 years, p=0.049). The AstraZeneca vaccine was associated with AIDP (n=38, 21.71%) more than other vaccines, p=0.02. The bilateral facial palsy subtype was mostly linked to adenoviral vector vaccinations, accounting for an average of 72% of the total BFP cases. Dysesthesias was the most reported sensory complication (60%, p=0.349). Most GBS patients survived (96%, p=0.036), however, most patients had low mEGOS scores (4 ±3.57, p<0.01). On average, patients developed GBS at 13.43 ±11.45 days from vaccination (p=0.73), and survival analysis for complication of GBS into mechanical ventilation or walking impairment yielded a severely increased probability of complication after 25 days (p<0.01). Intravenous immunoglobulins (p=0.03) along with rehabilitation (p=0.19) were the most commonly used treatment., Conclusion: This work investigates the incidence of Guillain-Barré Syndrome after COVID-19 vaccination. Most cases occurred after receiving the AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccines, and despite low mortality rates, ambulation was compromised in most patients. A higher risk of GBS complication is associated with an onset later than 12-13 days, particularly with Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Moderna vaccines. Foam cement is a versatile cementing material that has found numerous applications in the oil and gas industry. As research continues to advance and improve the properties of foam cement, it is likely that we will see an increased use of this material in the years to come. This review aims to summarize the current state of the art and the latest developments in the utilization of foam cement in oil fields. The study focuses on the key benefits of foam cement, including its light weight, excellent flow properties, ability to maintain its structural integrity over time, and high compressive strength. It also examines its various applications in oil field operations, such as cementing against fragile formations, well abandonment, zonal isolation, cementing offshore wells, and well remedial cementing. Furthermore, the paper evaluates the various factors that influence the performance of foam cement, such as the mixing design, foam structure, and stability. In addition, the methods for evaluating the foamed cementing job and the integrity of the formed cement sheath are also presented. The review also highlights the current challenges and limitations of foam cement technology that should be considered when using foamed cement in oil field applications and discusses the future directions for its development and optimization. The oil well cementing job is the operation in which a cement paste is pumped to fill the annulus behind the casing. Inclusion of nanomaterials in oil well cement results in improving the cement properties. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of incorporating nanosilica into oil well cement, addressing various aspects of the nanosilica manufacturing process, dispersion challenges, the impact on cement hydration and properties, as well as the operational challenges. The addition of nanosilica is found to enhance cement properties such as hydration rate, compressive strength at low temperatures, and resistance to deterioration at high temperatures. However, challenges arise, including increased viscosity and the need for higher water content. Dispersion of nanosilica into cement slurry remains a difficulty, compounded by the high manufacturing cost, limiting its practical application. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic role of erythropoietin (EPO) or myoinositol versus metformin (MET) in improving the reproductive functions and glucose tolerance in a rat model of polycystic ovary (PCOS). Oral letrozole (LTZ) was used for induction of PCOS in wester rats for 21 days, after that, MET, EPO and myoinositol were administered for the following 21 days. The LTZ-induced PCOS rats have lost their oestrous cyclicity and become fixed at the diestrus phase, developed insulin resistance, abnormal sex and gonadotrophin hormone serum levels, increased cystic follicles, decreased number of the growing follicles and very little or no corpora lutea on microscopic examination, which were reversed by the three drugs, MET, EPO and myoinositol. MET and myoinositol were mostly equally effective in improving the reproductive manifestations of the disease. However, EPO was most effective in decreasing the insulin level observed in this LTZ-induced model of PCOS.

Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is detected in 40% of patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). During latency, EBV induces epigenetic alterations to the host genome and decreases the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins. The present study aimed to evaluate the expression levels of mRNA molecules and the end product of proteins for the JAK/STAT and NF-κB pathways, and their association with clinicopathological and prognostic parameters in patients with EBV-positive and -negative classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL)., Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted from 2017 to 2022 at the Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University Hospital (Zagazig, Egypt). Biopsy samples of 64 patients with CHL were divided into EBV-positive and EBV-negative groups. The expression levels of mRNA molecules (JAK2, STAT1, IRF-1, PD-L1, IFN-γ, NF-κB, Bcl-xL, COX-2) and the end product of proteins (PD-L1, Bcl-xL, COX-2) were determined and compared with clinicopathological and prognostic parameters. Data were analyzed using the Chi square test and Kaplan-Meier estimate., Results: EBV-positive CHL patients were significantly associated with positive expression of mRNAs molecules (P<0.001) and the end product of proteins (P<0.001) for the JAK/STAT and NF-κB pathways, B-symptoms (P=0.022), extra-nodal involvement (P=0.017), and advanced stage of CHL (P=0.018). These patients were more susceptible to cancer progression, higher incidence of relapse (P=0.008), poor disease-free survival rate (P=0.013), poor overall survival rate (P=0.028), and higher mortality rate (P=0.015)., Conclusion: Through the activation of JAK/STAT and NF-κB signaling pathways, EBV-positive CHL is associated with poor clinicopathological parameters, higher incidence of disease progression, relapse, and poor overall survival. Purpose: Compared to the free-breathing technique, adjuvant left breast irradiation after breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy using the breath-hold method significantly reduces the heart mean dose, Left anterior descending artery, and ipsilateral lung doses. Movement with deep inspiration may also reduce heart volume in the field and regional node doses., Materials and Methods: Pre-radiotherapy planning CT was performed in the free-breathing, and breath-hold techniques using RPM, demographic information, clinicopathological data, heart volume in the field, heart mean dose, LAD mean dose, and regional nodal doses were calculated in both free breathing and DIBH. Fifty patients with left breast cancer receiving left breast adjuvant radiation were enrolled., Results: There was no significant difference in axillary LN coverage between the two techniques, except for SCL maximum dose, Axilla I node maximum dose, and Axilla II minimum dose in favor of the breath hold technique. The mean age was 47.54 years, 78% had GII IDC, 66% had positive LVSI results, and 74% of patients had T2. The breath hold strategy resulted in considerably decreased mean heart dose (p = 0.000), LAD dose (p = 0.000), ipsilateral lung mean dose (p = 0.012), and heart volume if the field (p = 0.013). The mean cardiac dosage and the dose of the LAD were significantly correlated (p = 0.000, R = 0.673). Heart volume in the field and heart mean dosage was not significantly correlated (p = 0.285, r = - 0.108)., Conclusion: When compared to free breathing scans, DIBH procedures result in considerably reduced dosage to the OAR and no appreciable changes in dose exposure to regional lymph node stations in patients with left-sided breast cancer., (© 2023. The rapid diagnosis of infectious diarrhea is lifesaving for intensive care unit (ICU) patients. This study evaluated a commercially available multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (BioFire FilmArray) for the diagnosis of parasitic and bacterial infections in ICU patients with secretory diarrhea in comparison to other traditional methods. This cross-sectional study included 50 subjects with infectious diarrhea. Their stool samples were subjected to macroscopic and microscopic examinations, concentration techniques, permanent staining techniques, stool culture, identification of bacterial infection by the Vitek 2 Compact 15 System, and molecular diagnosis of bacterial or parasitic infections by BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR. Parasitological examination showed that the sensitivity and specificity of BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR in the diagnosis of Cryptosporidium oocysts were 83.33% and 100.0%, respectively compared with 100% and 92.5% in diagnosis of G. lamblia cysts. Bacteriological examination showed that the sensitivity and specificity of BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR in the diagnosis of E. coli and salmonella were 100% and 100.0%, respectively. The BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR gastrointestinal (GI) panel assay was more sensitive and specific in the diagnosis of bacterial infections than parasitic infections. The BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR GI panel assay was less sensitive in the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts than traditional methods. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is linked to high mortality, mainly when discovered in its advanced stages. Several studies have pointed to the role of epigenetic factors in CRC and other cancers. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the initiation, progression, metastasis, and modulation of the response to chemotherapeutic modalities of CRC as vital contributors to epigenetic mechanisms. Colon cancer-associated transcript-1 (CCAT1) is one of the lncRNAs that have been dysregulated in serum samples, providing a non-invasive route for diagnosing CRC patients. This study aimed to determine the role of CCAT1 expression as diagnostic and prognostic markers. We tested the associations of CCAT1 expression with serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9). The study included three groups: 41 patients with colorectal cancer, 39 patients with precancerous benign colorectal diseases, and 20 normal control individuals. CEA and CA 19-9 were measured by an immunoassay automated system. The expression level of CCAT1 was assessed by a real-time polymerase chain reaction. There was a statistically significant elevation of serum CEA levels in patients with CRC compared to patients with precancerous benign colorectal diseases. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant difference in serum CA 19-9 levels between all groups (p = 0.102). Interestingly, CCAT1 expression was significantly upregulated in the blood of CRC patients compared to the precancerous benign colorectal diseases group (p = 0.009) and the control group (p <0.001). Also, expression of CCAT1 was significantly elevated in patients with precancerous benign colorectal diseases compared to the control group (p=0.004). In conclusion, measuring the expression level of CCAT1 is more advised than assessment of CEA and CA 19-9 for the early diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer., (Copyright© by the Egyptian Association of Immunologists.)
