This work, a continuation of a series of investigations on the aerodynamics of aggressive interturbine ducts (ITD), is aimed at providing detailed understanding of the flow physics and loss mechanisms in four different ITD geometries. A systematic experimental and computational study was carried out by varying duct outlet-to-inlet area ratios (ARs) and mean rise angles while keeping the duct length-to-inlet height ratio, Reynolds number, and inlet swirl constant in all four geometries. The flow structures within the ITDs were found to be dominated by the boundary layer separation and counter-rotating vortices in both the casing and hub regions. The duct mean rise angle determined the severity of adverse pressure gradient in the casing's first bend, whereas the duct AR mainly governed the second bend's static pressure rise. The combination of upstream wake flow and the first bend's adverse pressure gradient caused the boundary layer to separate and intensify the strength of counter-rotating vortices. At high mean rise angle, the separation became stronger at the casing's first bend and moved farther upstream. At high ARs, a two-dimensional separation appeared on the casing and resulted in increased loss. Pressure loss penalties increased significantly with increasing duct mean rise angle and AR. Part II of this two-part paper presents the aerodynamic behavior of a low-pressure high-lift turbine airfoil, PakB, under the influence of incoming wakes. The periodic unsteady effects of wakes from a single upstream blade-row were measured in a low-speed linear cascade facility at Reynolds numbers of 25,000, 50,000 and 100,000 and at two free-stream turbulence intensity levels of 0.4% and 4%. In addition, eight reduced frequencies between 0.53 and 3.2, at three flow coefficients of 0.5, 0.7 and 1.0 were examined. The complex wake-induced transition, flow separation and reattachment on the suction sur-face boundary layer were determined from an array of closely-spaced surface hot-film sensors. The wake-induced transition caused the separated boundary layer to reattach to the suction surface at all conditions examined. The time-varying profile losses, measured downstream of the cascade, increased with decreasing Reynolds number. The influence of increased freestream turbulence intensity was only evident in between wake-passing events at low reduced frequencies. At higher values of reduced frequency, the losses increased slightly and, for the cases examined here, losses were slightly larger at lower flow coefficients. This two-part paper presents a detailed experimental investigation of the laminar separa-tion and transition phenomena on the suction surface of a high-lift low-pressure turbine airfoil, PakB. The first part describes the influence of Reynolds number, freestream turbu-lence intensity and turbulence length scale on the PakB airfoil under steady inflow condi-tions. The present measurements are distinctive in that a closely-spaced array of hot-film sensors has allowed a very detailed examination of the suction surface boundary layer behavior. In addition, this paper presents a technique for interpreting the transition pro-cess in steady, and periodically unsteady, separated flows based on dynamic and statisti-cal properties of the hot-film measurements. Measurements were made in a low-speed linear cascade facility at Reynolds numbers between 25,000 and 150,000 at three free-stream turbulence intensity levels of 0.4%, 2%, and 4%. Two separate grids were used to generate turbulence intensity of 4% with integral length scales of about 10% and 40% of the airfoil axial chord length. While the higher levels of turbulence intensity promoted earlier transition and a shorter separation bubble, turbulence length scale did not have a noticeable effect on the transition process. The size of the suction side separation bubble increased with decreasing Reynolds number, and under low freestream turbulence levels the bubble failed to reattach at low Reynolds numbers. As expected, the losses increased with the length of the separation bubble, and increased significantly when the bubble failed to reattach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a detailed experimental investigation of the influence of core flow swirl on the mixing and performance of a scaled turbofan mixer with 12 scalloped lobes. Measurements were made downstream of the mixer in a coaxial wind tunnel. The core-to-bypass velocity ratio was set to 2:1, temperature ratio to 1.0, and pressure ratio to 1.03, giving a Reynolds number of 5.2 x 10s, based on the core flow velocity and equivalent diameter. In the core flow, the background turbulence intensity was raised to 5% and the swirl angle was varied from 0 deg to 30 deg with five vane geometries. At low swirl angles, additional streamwise vortices were generated by the deformation of normal vortices due to the scalloped lobes. With increased core swirl, greater than 10 deg, the additional streamwise vortices were generated mainly due to radial velocity deflection, rather than stretching and deformation of normal vortices. At high swirl angles, stronger streamwise vortices and rapid interaction between various vortices promoted downstream mixing. Mixing was enhanced with minimal pressure and thrust losses for the inlet swirl angles less than 10 deg. However, the reversed flow downstream of the center body was a dominant contributor to the loss of thrust at the maximum core flow swirl angle of 30 deg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flow mechanisms in an aggressive interturbine transition duct with and without low-profile vortex generators flow control. The interturbine duct had an area ratio of 1.53 and a mean rise angle of 35 deg. Measurements were made inside the annulus at a Reynolds number of 150,000. At the duct inlet, the background turbulence intensity was raised to 2.3% and a uniform swirl angle of 20 deg was established with a 48-airfoil vane ring. Results for the baseline case (no vortex generators) showed the flow structures within the duct were dominated by counter-rotating vortices and boundary layer separation in both the casing and hub regions. The combination of the adverse pressure gradient at the casing's first bend and upstream low momentum wakes caused the boundary layer to separate on the casing. The separated flow on the casing appears to reattach at the second bend. Counter-rotating and corotating vortex generators were installed on the casing. While both vortex generators significantly decreased the casing boundary layer separation with consequential reduction of overall pressure losses, the corotating configuration was found to be more effective.
