Abstract

Community schools are a sound education reform strategy that gets results. They start by asking local students and their families what they need to succeed in school, then they reach out to relevant community partners and use the school as the hub for organizing partnerships, services, and supports. By listening closely to the assets and needs of students and their families, community schools also develop trusting relationships and build support for the core work of education. Researchers believe that community schools can help improve attendance, reduce dropouts, and close the achievement gap.

4. Relationship of Selected Aspects of Hearing to Speech Disorders. Final Report.

Abstract

To determine if a relationship exists between temporal patterns of hearing and temporal patterns of speech, and between personality and temporal patterns of speech and hearing, normally hearing subjects were measured on the following: Critical Fusion Frequency, tone burst durations, fusion over silent intervals, interrupted speech, interrupted synthetic sentences, interrupted numbers, paired comparisons of tone burst durations, and the Eysenck Personality Inventory. Results indicated that the longer the phonation time and pause time of speech, the longer the integration time of hearing. It was suggested that the time involved in hearing affects the ease with which a person processes another's speech. Phonation time and pause time were thought to be related to the ability of the auditory system to bridge silent intervals. The left ear appeared to be more sensitive to speech timing than the right ear. Significant correlations existed between personality measure and timing measures of speech and hearing, but data did not indicate whether personality measures dictated the speech and hearing measures. 21. Computerized Pure-Tone Audiometric Procedures

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a computer program and the necessary interfacing systems which would enable a PDP/8-I digital computer to (1) control all aspects of administering pure-tone air- and bone-conduction stimuli; (2) recognize the need for masking based on unmasked auditory thresholds, determine the appropriate level of masking, and regulate the presentation of the masker to the nontest ear; (3) analyze the subject’s responses to the above procedures in terms of threshold-determination criteria; and (4) present the obtained thresholds in audiogram format at the conclusion of the computerized testing procedure. The threshold accuracy of this automated design was evaluated in terms of Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients and average deviations of differences obtained between thresholds determined by a clinical audiologist and computer-determined threshold values when each performed these audiometric test procedures on the same hypacusic subjects. The results of this study indicate that the computerized procedures used to determine pure-tone air- and bone-conduction thresholds are, in terms of the patients tested, a clinically feasible means of assessing these auditory functions.
