Computer Science - Other Computer Science - Abstract
Processing large amounts of data to extract useful information is an essential task within companies. To help in this task, visualization techniques have been commonly used due to their capacity to present data in synthesized views, easier to understand and manage. However, achieving the right visualization display for a data set is a complex cartography process that involves several transformation steps to adapt the (domain) data to the (visualization) data format expected by visualization tools. To maximize the benefits of visualization we propose Portolan, a generic model-driven cartography framework that facilitates the discovery of the data to visualize, the specification of view definitions for that data and the transformations to bridge the gap with the visualization tools. Our approach has been implemented on top of the Eclipse EMF modeling framework and validated on three different use cases.

[INFO.INFO-CL]Computer Science [cs]/Computation and Language [cs.CL] - Abstract
International audience; Software tools and corresponding knowledge tend to be collected and packaged into platforms like Eclipse, MathLab or KDE. Their success and usefulness combined with their growing size and complexity rise issues about management of dependencies between their components and between the platform and other applications which rely on its plug-in system and/or provided functionalities. Such problems imply need for dependencies management tools in which visualization is a core feature. As dependencies are also a concern in domains like Object-Oriented Programming or Operating System packaging, we may expect to reuse corresponding works in visualization. But each domain and its related dependencies problem have induced their own hard coded viewing and browsing tools. In this article we present how we have reuse existing visualization tools for our platform cartography together with our own displays using a Model-Driven Interoperability approach to easily realize bindings between visualization tools.

[INFO.INFO-SE]Computer Science [cs]/Software Engineering [cs.SE] - Abstract
International audience; The constant evolution of software systems has led the software engineering to continually develop new methods and concepts to overcome their development and maintenance. Two main streams have emerged in recent years and become important in current industrial processes: Model Driven Engineering (MDE) and agile methods. MDE promotes the use of models as higher-level artifacts, the separation of concerns and generative approaches. On the other hand, Agility focuses on best practices for programming of software systems and their integration within a development process. Nevertheless, these two trends have evolved independently and must now be unified to make the best of both. We investigate in this position paper the benefits and scope of such unification and we expose our preliminary thought on the challenges ahead for this. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a canvas for the study of this unification, thereby exposing the different challenges. We also hope that this paper will arise interesting discussions within the community about the combination of agile processes and model based paradigms and tools.

[INFO.INFO-SE]Computer Science [cs]/Software Engineering [cs.SE] - Abstract
International audience; Model-driven reverse engineering focuses on automatically discovering models from different kinds of available information on existing software systems. Although the source code of an application is often used as a basic input, this information may take various forms such as: design "models", bug reports, or any kind of documentation in general. All this metadata may have been either built manually or generated (semi)automatically during the whole software life cycle, from the specification and development phase to the effective running of the system. This paper proposes an automated and extensible MDE approach to build a usable cartography of a given platform from available metadata by combining several MDE techniques. As a running example, the approach has been applied to the TopCased MDE platform for Embedded & Real-Time Systems.

[INFO.INFO-SE]Computer Science [cs]/Software Engineering [cs.SE] - Abstract

- Abstract
Many modeling languages share some common concepts and principles. For example, Java, MOF, and UML share some aspects of the concepts of classes, methods, attributes, and inheritance. However, model transformations such as refactorings specified for a given language cannot be readily reused for another language because their related metamodels may be structurally different. Our aim is to enable a flexible reuse of model transformations across various metamodels. Thus, in this paper, we present an approach allowing the specification of generic model transformations, in particular refactorings, so that they can be applied to different metamodels. Our approach relies on two mechanisms: (1) an adaptation based mainly on the weaving of aspects; (2) the notion of model typing, an extension of object typing in the model-oriented context. We validated our approach by performing some experiments that consisted of specifying three well known refactorings (Encapsulate Field, Move Method, and Pull Up Method) and applying each of them onto three different metamodels (Java, MOF, and UML).

- Abstract
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2008., Includes bibliographical references (leaves 116-118)., The partitioning of a system can and will dictate the creative space for a designer or engineer. This thesis will analyze how using a new automotive architecture known as a Front End Module (FEM) can affect a limited specific subset of stakeholders. Through the use of interviews of subject matter experts, literature research and the use of System Design Management tools, an in depth analysis will be done on the FEM and how it affects the craftsmanship, damageability and assembly attributes. It will be shown how the craftsmanship attribute can be improved through the strategic use of FEM's to allow for a feed-forward system where build data are incorporated into upcoming FEM builds. Even with this advantage, the FEM architecture will not negatively impact the damageability attribute or assembly attribute if the proper design cues and strategies are followed. The FEM will also be intensely analyzed using the tools from the MIT SDM program where it will be evaluated as an architecture itself through the specific and targeted intent and beneficiary breakdown. The analysis will also include an Object/Process Mapping analysis where it will be proposed that the true customer of the automotive front end is not the individual that purchased the vehicle but rather the visual society as a whole. Finally, a managerial approach will be taken for the analysis of the inherent and inevitable supplier relationship that is required with using this FEM architecture. Interviews were conducted with two suppliers of OEM's and their common road blocks will be analyzed such as lack of holistic thinking or failure to understand the role of the system integrator. Proposed next steps will be laid out to address these barriers in order to open the communication channels between the supply base and the Original Equipment Manufacturers., by Vincent R. Mahé., S.M.
