Litter and microplastic assessments are being carried out worldwide. Arctic ecosystems are no exception and plastic pollution is high on the Arctic Council's agenda. Water and sediment have been identified as two of the priority compartments for monitoring plastics under the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP). Recommendations for monitoring both compartments are presented in this publication. Alone, such samples can provide information on presence, fate, and potential impacts to ecosystems. Together, the quantification of microplastics in sediment and water from the same region produce a three-dimensional picture of plastics, not only a snapshot of floating or buoyant plastics in the surface water or water column but also a picture of the plastics reaching the shoreline or benthic sediments, in lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Assessment methodologies must be adapted to the ecosystems of interest to generate reliable data. In its current form, published data on plastic pollution in the Arctic is sporadic and collected using a wide spectrum of methods which limits the extent to which data can be compared. A harmonised and coordinated effort is needed to gather data on plastic pollution for the Pan-Arctic. Such information will aid in identifying priority regions and focusing mitigation efforts.

Fritidsbåtshamnar har en betydande miljöpåverkan och är redan idag föremål för en rad olika krav och regler. Projektet har undersökt potentialen för hur ett miljömärkningssystem kan användas som ett styrinstrument för att minska miljöpåverkan från fritidsbåthamnar. Rapporten har tagits fram av Havsmiljöinstitutet i samarbete med IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet på uppdrag av Havs- och vattenmyndigheten. Rapportförfattarna ansvarar för innehållet och slutsatserna i rapporten, vilket inte innebär något ställningstagande från Havs- och vattenmyndighetens sida.

Atmosfäriskt nedfall av mikroskopiska skräppartiklar i storleksspannet 30 – 5000 μm, så som plastfibrer, plastfragment, gummifragment från fordonsdäck (SBR) och icke-syntetiska textilfibrer, 978-91-7883-169-2analyserades i prover från elva platser som ingår i Krondroppsnätet. Krondroppsnätet är ett nätverk för övervakning av atmosfäriskt nedfall till skog och öppen mark, och har provtagningsplatser fördelade över hela Sverige. Varje plats har två provtagningspunkter, en för nedfall som passerat genom trädkronorna, s.k. krondropp, och en för provtagning av nederbörd på öppet fält. Krondropp representerar både våt- och torrdeposition medan prover från öppet fält, även kallade bulkdeposition, i huvudsak representerar våtdeposition. Data från de två punkterna kan användas för att beräkna torrdeposition och våtdeposition av luftburna ämnen till skog och öppen mark. Provtagningsplatserna ligger utspridda över landet och representerade också tre kategorier av närhet till tätbebyggt område. Nedfall av alla kategorier av mikroskräp kunde påvisas vid de flesta av provtagningsplatserna. SBR-fragment dominerade vid de lokaler som låg i en större stad, och högsta koncentrationen, 433 SBR-fragment/m2/dag, uppmättes i centrala Malmö. Nedfall av mikroplast (plastfibrer + plastfragment) varierade mellan 0 och 70 partiklar/m2/dag vid de olika lokalerna. Plastfibrer dominerade i antal över plastfragment vid 14 av de 20 provtagningspunkterna. Ingen konsekvent skillnad i mikroskräpdeposition kunde uppmätas mellan krondropps - och öppet fält-prover, varför data inte kunde användas för att särskilja torr- resp. våtdeposition av partiklarna. Resultaten från studien visar att mikroskräppartiklar transporteras med luften till områden långt bort från punktkällor. Den styrker också tidigare litteraturbaserade studier om att fordonsdäck utgör en viktig källa till mikroskräp i miljön. Atmospheric deposition of microscopic litter particles in the range 30 – 5000 μm, like plastic fibres, plastic fragments, tire fragments (SBR, styrene butadiene rubber) and non-synthetic textile fibres, were analyzed in samples from eleven sampling locations from the Swedish Throughfall Monitoring Network (SWETHRO). Each location has two sampling points, one for collection of the deposition as the precipitation passing through the forest canopies, so-called throughfall, and one for collection of the bulk deposition with precipitation to the open field. Bulk deposition mainly reflects the wet deposition. Data from these two sampling points can be used to calculate dry and wet deposition of airborne substances to forests and to the open field. The sampling locations are spread out over Sweden and represent three categories depending on their position in relation urban areas. Deposition of all the microlitter fractions was detected at most of the sampling locations. SBR fragments was the dominating category at the locations in large cities, and the highest detected concentration was found in central Malmö, 433 SBR fragments/m2/day. Deposition of microplastic (plastic fibres + plastic fragments) varied between 0 and 70 particles/m2/day at the different locations. Plastic fibres dominated in numbers over plastic fragments av 14 of the 20 sampling points. No consistent difference in microlitter deposition could be detected between the samples from the throughfall and the bulk deposition to the open field, and hence the obtained data could not be used to separate dry and wet deposition of particles. The results from the study show that microlitter particles can be subject to atmospheric transport to areas far away from point sources. This supports theoretical estimations from previous literature reviews stating that tire wear is an important source of microliter also in remote areas.

The knowledge base concerning microplastics (MPs) in the environment is rapidly developing with the goal of closing the existing knowledge gaps. One of such gaps, the occurrence of MPs in roadside snowbanks in urban areas, was surveyed at 16 sites in two northern Swedish cities, Luleå and Umeå, with the objective of estimating the quantities of MPs in snowbanks and evaluating the influence of site characteristics on such estimates. The MPs extracted from the melted snow samples were classified into three categories (the mean particle concentrations are shown in the brackets): 1. Tire and pavement wear particles (19,300 particles/L), 2. Road marking paint particles (430 particles/L), and 3. Plastics particles (33 particles/L), No correlations were found between the MP concentrations and site characteristics. The study provided the evidence that urban snow stores MPs, which may reach the receiving waters either with direct snow disposal or snowmelt discharge via storm sewers. La connaissance relative aux microplastiques (MP) dans l’environnement croît rapidement dans le but de combler certaines lacunes. Une de ces lacunes est l’occurrence de MP dans les bancs de neige en bordures de route en milieu urbain. Des bancs de neige ont été examinés sur 16 sites dans les villes de Luleå et Umeå au nord de la Suède dans le but d’estimer les quantités de MP présentes ainsi que d’évaluer l’influence des caractéristiques de sites sur ces estimations. Les MP extraits des échantillons de neige fondus ont été classifiés selon trois catégories (concentration moyenne indiquée entre parenthèses) : 1. Usure des pneumatiques et de la chaussée (19300 particules/L), 2. Peinture de marquage de la chaussée (430 particules/L), 3. Plastiques (33 particules/L). Aucune corrélation entre les concentrations de MP et les caractéristiques de sites n’a pu être mise en évidence. Cette étude apporte la preuve que la neige urbaine accumule des MP qui peuvent atteindre les eaux réceptrices soit par déversement direct lors du déneigement soit par le réseau de drainage lors de la fonte. Microplastic pollution is presently considered a high concern topic by scientists, policy makers, governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations and the general public. Microplastics are highly widespread in all environmental compartments (e.g. air, water, sediments and biota) and increasing empirical evidence points towards potential negative effects on organisms, both at an individual scale and potentially at population and ecosystem level, as well as effects on human health. To understand the levels and effects of microplastics on biota, it is important to conduct risk assessment evaluations based on realistic microplastic concentration exposure scenarios which are targeted at identifying the effects of microplastics on species and ecosystems. Realistic data on exposures should derive from reliable monitoring data on the uptake and accumulation of microplastics in biota. Presently, there is sufficient empirical data available to underpin arguments to suggest species that could serve as suitable candidates for monitoring microplastics in the environment. Comparison of available data is still limited due to the use of different analytical methods and reporting units, nonetheless researchers have been providing recommendations and frameworks to surpass these limitations.
