Maintenance of autonomic homeostasis is continuously calibrated by sensory fibers of the vagus nerve and sympathetic chain that convey compound action potentials (CAPs) to the central nervous system. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) intravenous challenge reliably elicits a robust inflammatory response that can resemble systemic inflammation and acute endotoxemia. Here, we administered LPS intravenously in nine healthy subjects while recording ventral cervical magnetoneurography (vcMNG)-derived CAPs at the rostral Right Nodose Ganglion (RNG) and the caudal Right Carotid Artery (RCA) with optically pumped magnetometers (OPM). We observed vcMNG RNG and RCA neural firing rates that tracked changes in TNF-α levels in the systemic circulation. Further, endotype subgroups based on high and low IL-6 responders segregate RNG CAP frequency (at 30-120 min) and based on high and low IL-10 response discriminate RCA CAP frequency (at 0-30 min). Background: The spinal cord and its interactions with the brain are fundamental for movement control and somatosensation. However, brain and spinal electrophysiology in humans have largely been treated as distinct enterprises, in part due to the relative inaccessibility of the spinal cord. Consequently, there is a dearth of knowledge on human spinal electrophysiology, including the multiple pathologies that affect the spinal cord as well as the brain., New Method: Here we exploit recent advances in the development of wearable optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) which can be flexibly arranged to provide coverage of both the spinal cord and the brain in relatively unconstrained environments. This system for magnetospinoencephalography (MSEG) measures both spinal and cortical signals simultaneously by employing custom-made scanning casts., Results: We evidence the utility of such a system by recording spinal and cortical evoked responses to median nerve stimulation at the wrist. In the current study we propose a magneto-optical system for registration and analysis of magnetic nano- and microparticles magnetic relaxation. The core of our system is the novel compact magnetometer based on an yttrium-iron garnet film and working at room temperature. The sensor demonstrates sensitivity of 35 pT/√{Hz} at 79 Hz and recovery time less than 100 µs, which allows to register quite fast magnetic relaxations of a low amplitude. All these facts make the system feasible for usage in biological magnetorelaxometry and theranostics. Statistical processing of the relaxation curves allowed us to estimate both amplitudes and relaxation times for various biocompatible magnetic particles at the amount of 100 µg in the test tubes experiments. The system has a great potential of further development for usage in the areas of targeted drug delivery, hyperthermia, magnetic imaging. Being comparatively cheap, the system potentially is of a great interest in the fields of biomedicine and nanomedicine.

Light-atom interactions during spin preparation and readout in optically pumped magnetometers can lead to inaccuracies. We demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, detection strategy that exploits an interrogation sequence in the pulsed free-induction-decay modality to suppress these systematic errors. The technique is predicated on monitoring the dynamics of preoriented atomic spins as they evolve unperturbed during a dark interval, by subsequently applying a time-delayed optical pulse to infer the spin state's phase. This detection mode reduced light shift inaccuracies to within 0.6 nT, and could be employed in a wide variety of high-precision atomic magnetometry experiments.

Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) have recently become so sensitive that they are suitable for use in magnetoencephalography (MEG). These sensors solve operational problems of the current standard MEG, where superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) gradiometers and magnetometers are being used. The main advantage of OPMs is that they do not require cryogenics for cooling. Therefore, they can be placed closer to the scalp and are much easier to use. Here, we measured auditory evoked fields (AEFs) with both SQUID- and OPM-based MEG systems for a group of subjects to better understand the usage of a limited sensor count OPM-MEG. We present a theoretical framework that transforms the within subject data and equivalent simulation data from one MEG system to the other. This approach works on the principle of solving the inverse problem with one system, and then using the forward model to calculate the magnetic fields expected for the other system. For the source reconstruction, we used a minimum norm estimate (MNE) of the current distribution. Two different volume conductor models were compared: the homogeneous conducting sphere and the three-shell model of the head. The transformation results are characterized by a relative error and cross-correlation between the measured and the estimated magnetic field maps of the AEFs. The results for both models are encouraging. Since some commercial OPMs measure multiple components of the magnetic field simultaneously, we additionally analyzed the effect of tangential field components. Overall, our dual-axis OPM-MEG with 15 sensors yields similar information to a 62-channel SQUID-MEG with its field of view restricted to the right hemisphere., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Here we propose that much of the magnetic interference observed when using optically pumped magnetometers for MEG experiments can be modeled as a spatially homogeneous magnetic field. We show that this approximation reduces sensor level variance and substantially improves statistical power. This model does not require knowledge of the underlying neuroanatomy nor the sensor positions. It only needs information about the sensor orientation. Due to the model's low rank there is little risk of removing substantial neural signal. However, we provide a framework to assess this risk for any sensor number, design or subject neuroanatomy. We find that the risk of unintentionally removing neural signal is reduced when multi-axis recordings are performed. We validated the method using a binaural auditory evoked response paradigm and demonstrated that removing the homogeneous magnetic field increases sensor level SNR by a factor of 3. Considering the model's simplicity and efficacy, we suggest that this homogeneous field correction can be a powerful preprocessing step for arrays of optically pumped magnetometers., (Copyright © 2021. Optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are highly sensitive, compact magnetic field sensors, which offer a viable alternative to cryogenic sensors (superconducting quantum interference devices - SQUIDs) for magnetoencephalography (MEG). With the promise of a wearable system that offers lifespan compliance, enables movement during scanning, and provides higher quality data, OPMs could drive a step change in MEG instrumentation. However, this potential can only be realised if background magnetic fields are appropriately controlled, via a combination of optimised passive magnetic screening (i.e. enclosing the system in layers of high-permeability materials), and electromagnetic coils to further null the remnant magnetic field. In this work, we show that even in an OPM-optimised passive shield with extremely low (<2 nT) remnant magnetic field, head movement generates significant artefacts in MEG data that manifest as low-frequency interference. To counter this effect we introduce a magnetic field mapping technique, in which the participant moves their head to sample the background magnetic field using a wearable sensor array; resulting data are compared to a model to derive coefficients representing three uniform magnetic field components and five magnetic field gradient components inside the passive shield. We show that this technique accurately reconstructs the magnitude of known magnetic fields. Moreover, by feeding the obtained coefficients into a bi-planar electromagnetic coil system, we were able to reduce the uniform magnetic field experienced by the array from a magnitude of 1.3±0.3 nT to 0.29±0.07 nT. Most importantly, we show that this field compensation generates a five-fold reduction in motion artefact at 0‒2 Hz, in a visual steady-state evoked response experiment using 6 Hz stimulation. We suggest that this technique could be used in future OPM-MEG experiments to improve the quality of data, especially in paradigms seeking to measure low-frequency oscillations, or in experiments where head movement is encouraged., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest V.S. is the founding director of QuSpin Inc. Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are quickly widening the scopes of noninvasive neurophysiological imaging. The possibility of placing these magnetic field sensors on the scalp allows not only to acquire signals from people in movement, but also to reduce the distance between the sensors and the brain, with a consequent gain in the signal-to-noise ratio. These advantages make the technique particularly attractive to characterise sources of brain activity in demanding populations, such as children and patients with epilepsy. However, the technology is currently in an early stage, presenting new design challenges around the optimal sensor arrangement and their complementarity with other techniques as electroencephalography (EEG). In this article, we present an optimal array design strategy focussed on minimising the brain source localisation error. The methodology is based on the Cramér-Rao bound, which provides lower error bounds on the estimation of source parameters regardless of the algorithm used. We utilise this framework to compare whole head OPM arrays with commercially available electro/magnetoencephalography (E/MEG) systems for localising brain signal generators. In addition, we study the complementarity between EEG and OPM-based MEG, and design optimal whole head systems based on OPMs only and a combination of OPMs and EEG electrodes for characterising deep and superficial sources alike. Finally, we show the usefulness of the approach to find the nearly optimal sensor positions minimising the estimation error bound in a given cortical region when a limited number of OPMs are available. Objective: This proof-of-principle-study evaluated the extent to which spontaneous activity (SA) of the muscle can be detected via non-invasive magnetomyography (MMG) with optically pumped magnetometers (OPM)., Methods: Five patients, who together exhibited all forms of SA (fibrillations, positive sharp waves, fasciculations, myotonic discharges, complex-repetitive discharges) with conventional needle electromyography (EMG), were studied by OPM-MMG and simultaneous surface EMG (sEMG) while at rest, during light muscle activation, and when a muscle stretch reflex was elicited. Three healthy subjects were measured as controls. SA was considered apparent in the OPM-MMG if a signal could be visually detected that corresponded in shape and frequency to the SA in the respective needle EMG., Results: SA in the context of fasciculations could be detected in 2 of 5 patients by simultaneous OPM-MMG/sEMG. Other forms of SA could not be detected at rest, during light muscle activation, or after provocation of a muscle stretch reflex., Conclusions: Results show that fasciculations could be detected non-invasively via a new method (OPM)., Significance: We show that other forms of SA are not detectable with current OPM and propose necessary technical solutions to overcome this circumstance. Optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) offer the potential for a step change in magnetoencephalography (MEG) enabling wearable systems that provide improved data quality, accommodate any subject group, allow data capture during movement and potentially reduce cost. However, OPM-MEG is a nascent technology and, to realise its potential, it must be shown to facilitate key neuroscientific measurements, such as the characterisation of brain networks. Networks, and the connectivities that underlie them, have become a core area of neuroscientific investigation, and their importance is underscored by many demonstrations of their disruption in brain disorders. Consequently, a demonstration of network measurements using OPM-MEG would be a significant step forward. Here, we aimed to show that a wearable 50-channel OPM-MEG system enables characterisation of the electrophysiological connectome. To this end, we measured connectivity in the resting state and during a visuo-motor task, using both OPM-MEG and a state-of-the-art 275-channel cryogenic MEG device. Our results show that resting-state connectome matrices from OPM and cryogenic systems exhibit a high degree of similarity, with correlation values >70%. In addition, in task data, similar differences in connectivity between individuals (scanned multiple times) were observed in cryogenic and OPM-MEG data, again demonstrating the fidelity of the OPM-MEG device. Aim: Aiming at analysing the signal conduction in muscular fibres, the spatio-temporal dynamics of the magnetic field generated by the propagating muscle action potential (MAP) is studied., Method: In this prospective, proof of principle study, the magnetic activity of the intrinsic foot muscle after electric stimulation of the tibial nerve was measured using optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs). A classical biophysical electric dipole model of the propagating MAP was implemented to model the source of the data. In order to account for radial currents of the muscular tubules system, a magnetic dipole oriented along the direction of the muscle was added., Results: The signal profile generated by the activity of the intrinsic foot muscles was measured by four OPM devices. Three OPM sensors captured the spatio-temporal magnetic field pattern of the longitudinal intrinsic foot muscles. Changes of the activation pattern reflected the propagating muscular action potential along the muscle. A combined electric and magnetic dipole model could explain the recorded magnetic activity., Interpretation: OPM devices allow for a new, non-invasive way to study MAP patterns. Since magnetic fields are less altered by the tissue surrounding the dipole source compared to electric activity, a precise analysis of the spatial characteristics and temporal dynamics of the MAP is possible. The classic electric dipole model explains major but not all aspects of the magnetic field. The field has longitudinal components generated by intrinsic structures of the muscle fibre. By understanding these magnetic components, new methods could be developed to analyse the muscular signal transduction pathway in greater detail. Introduction: A magnetic seed marker system (Magseed, Endomagnetics, Cambridge, United Kingdom) is used as a localisation method for non-palpable breast lesions in the United States, Europe, and Hong Kong. It overcomes many limitations of conventional techniques and allows scheduling flexibility. We sought to evaluate its efficacy and safety in the Chinese population., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all Chinese women who underwent magnetic seed marker-guided breast lesion excision from June 2019 to February 2020 at a single institution. Placement success (final target-to-seed distance <10 mm) was evaluated by imaging on the day of surgery. Specimen radiographs and pathology reports were reviewed for magnetic seed markers and target removal. Margin clearance and re-excision rates were analysed., Results: Twenty two magnetic seed markers were placed in 21 patients under sonographic or stereotactic guidance to localise 21 target lesions. One target lesion required two magnetic seed markers for bracketing. There was no migration of nine markers placed 6 to 56 days before the day of surgery. Placement success was achieved in 20 (90.9%) cases. Mean final target-to-seed distance was 3.1 mm. Two out of 21 (9.5%) lesions required alternative localisation due to marker migration ≥10 mm, while 19 (90.5%) lesions underwent successful magnetic seed marker-guided excision. Three of these 19 lesions (15.8%) were excised with therapeutic intent, one of which (33%) required re-excision due to a close margin. All 22 magnetic seed markers were successfully removed. Background: Small peripheral pulmonary nodules, which are usually deep-seated with no visual markers on the pleural surface, are often difficult to locate during surgery. At present, CT-guided percutaneous techniques are used to locate pulmonary nodules, but this method has many limitations. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the accuracy and feasibility of electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy (ENB) with pleural dye to locate small peripheral pulmonary nodules before video-associated thoracic surgery (VATS)., Methods: The ENB localisation procedure was performed under general anaesthesia in an operating room. Once the locatable guide wire, covered with a sheath, reached the ideal location, it was withdrawn and 0.2-1.0 mL of methylene blue/indocyanine green was injected through the guide sheath. Thereafter, 20-60 mL of air was instilled to disperse the dye to the pleura near the nodules. VATS was then performed immediately., Results: Study subjects included 25 patients with 28 nodules. The mean largest diameter of the pulmonary nodules was 11.8 mm (range, 6.0-24.0 mm), and the mean distance from the nearest pleural surface was 13.4 mm (range, 2.5-34.9 mm). After the ENB-guided localisation procedure was completed, the dye was visualised in 23 nodules (82.1%) using VATS. The average duration of the ENB-guided pleural dye marking procedure was 12.6 min (range, 4-30 min). The resection margins were negative in all malignant nodules. Complications unrelated to the ENB-guided localisation procedure occurred in two patients, including one case of haemorrhage and one case of slow intraoperative heart rate., Conclusion: ENB can be used to safely and accurately locate small peripheral pulmonary nodules and guide surgical resection., Trial Registration Number: ChiCTR1900021963., Competing Interests: Competing interests: None declared., (© Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2020. Aim: In order to develop fundamentally new technologies for non-invasive and safer diagnosis of cancer, we aimed to detect non-contact magnetic signals from a malignant tumor in animals treated or not-treated with the ferromagnetic nanocomposite Ferroplat., Materials and Methods: Guerin's carcinoma was used as a model of tumor growth. The biomagnetism of the tumor was evaluated in the dynamics of its growth. Ten days after tumor transplantation, Ferroplat was administered intravenously to half of the animals with the tumor and to half of the control animals. The magnitude of the magnetic signals was determined 1 h and every two days after administration of the nanocomposite using a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device magnetometer of the original design., Results: We have found that the magnetic signals coming from the tumor are significantly higher compared to control tumor-free animals. Intravenous administration of a ferromagnetic nanocomposite (Ferroplat: Fe 3 O 4  + cisplatinum) led to a significant increase of the magnetic signal, especially in the tumor tissue, and inhibition of Guerin's carcinoma growth. Ferromagnetic nanoparticles (32.7 nm) are retained in malignant cells for a longer time than in normal ones., Conclusion: Tumor cells accumulate iron nanoparticles more intensively than normal ones. Nanocomposite Ferroplat can be used for a targeted delivery of cisplatin to malignant cells.

Hallucinogens induce the head-twitch response (HTR), a rapid reciprocal head movement, in mice. Although head twitches are usually identified by direct observation, they can also be assessed using a head-mounted magnet and a magnetometer. Procedures have been developed to automate the analysis of magnetometer recordings by detecting events that match the frequency, duration, and amplitude of the HTR. However, there is considerable variability in the features of head twitches, and behaviors such as jumping have similar characteristics, reducing the reliability of these methods. We have developed an automated method that can detect head twitches unambiguously, without relying on features in the amplitude-time domain. To detect the behavior, events are transformed into a visual representation in the time-frequency domain (a scalogram), deep features are extracted using the pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) ResNet-50, and then the images are classified using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. These procedures were used to analyze recordings from 237 mice containing 11,312 HTR. After transformation to scalograms, the multistage CNN-SVM approach detected 11,244 (99.4%) of the HTR. The procedures were insensitive to other behaviors, including jumping and seizures. Deep learning based on scalograms can be used to automate HTR detection with robust sensitivity and reliability.

Serotonergic hallucinogens such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) induce head twitches in rodents via 5-HT 2A receptor activation. The goal of the present investigation was to determine whether a correlation exists between the potency of hallucinogens in the mouse head-twitch response (HTR) paradigm and their reported potencies in other species, specifically rats and humans. Dose-response experiments were conducted with phenylalkylamine and tryptamine hallucinogens in C57BL/6J mice, enlarging the available pool of HTR potency data to 41 total compounds. For agents where human data are available (n = 36), a strong positive correlation (r = 0.9448) was found between HTR potencies in mice and reported hallucinogenic potencies in humans. HTR potencies were also found to be correlated with published drug discrimination ED 50 values for substitution in rats trained with either LSD (r = 0.9484, n = 16) or 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine (r = 0.9564, n = 21). All three of these behavioral effects (HTR in mice, hallucinogen discriminative stimulus effects in rats, and psychedelic effects in humans) have been linked to 5-HT 2A receptor activation. We present evidence that hallucinogens induce these three effects with remarkably consistent potencies. In addition to having high construct validity, the HTR assay also appears to show significant predictive validity, confirming its translational relevance for predicting subjective potency of hallucinogens in humans. These findings support the use of the HTR paradigm as a preclinical model of hallucinogen psychopharmacology and in structure-activity relationship studies of hallucinogens. Future investigations with a larger number of test agents will evaluate whether the HTR assay can be used to predict the hallucinogenic potency of 5-HT 2A agonists in humans. We introduce a Magnetic Particle Imaging Susceptometer (MPIS) that uses a high-sensitivity atomic magnetometer (AM) for recording the spatial distribution of fluid-suspended magnetic nanoparticles. We have evaluated the MPIS performance by one-dimensional scans of structured nanoparticle phantoms, demonstrating, in particular, resolutions of ≈2.5 mm prior to deconvolution and << 1 mm after deconvolution. Our instrument conceptually follows the general principle of Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) for encoding spatial distributions into magnetic flux density variations. Conversely to previously demonstrated MPI methods, MPIS works in time-space by recording time series of the sample's magnetic response including all Fourier components. The device deploys a specifically designed system of coils, a low-frequency excitation scheme, and a simple source localization algorithm. The difference of the AM's frequency response with respect to the conventional receive coil detection allows us to work at much lower driving frequencies. We demonstrate operation at frequencies on the order of 100 Hz, enabling the beneficial use of larger nanoparticles. The spatial distribution encoded into the particles' susceptibility needs a much lower excitation field amplitude compared to conventional MPI scanners. These two features make MPIS least harmful for biological samples and subjects compared to conventional MPI scanners. We also address performance characteristics and other possible applications of MPIS.

We report a highly compliant process for patterning nanoparticle arrays on micro- and nanomechanical devices. The distinctive step involves the single layer self-assembled nanoparticles on top of released nanomechanical devices. We demonstrate the process by fabricating sizable arrays of nanomechanical devices on silicon-on-insulator substrates, acting as nanomechanical torque magnetometers. Later, the nanoparticles were self-assembled in geometrical shapes on top of the devices by a unique combination of top-down and bottom-up methods. The self-assembled array of nanoparticles successfully showed a magnetic torque signal by magnetic actuation of the magnetometer. This patterning process can be generalized for any shape and for a wide range of nanoparticles on the nanomechanical resonators.

Introduction: The HeartMate 3 ™ has shown lower rates of adverse events compared to previous devices due to the design and absence of mechanical bearings. For previous devices, sound analysis emerged as a way to assess pump function. The aims of this study were to determine if sound analysis can be applied to the HeartMate 3 in vivo and in vitro and to evaluate an electronic stethoscope., Method: Sound recordings were performed with microphones and clinical accessible electronic stethoscope. The recordings were studied in both the time and the frequency domains. Recordings from four patients were performed to determine if in vivo and in vitro recordings are comparable., Results: The results show that it is possible to detect sound from HeartMate 3 and the sound spectrum is clear. Pump frequency and frequency of the pulsatile mode are easily determined. Frequency spectra from in vitro and in vivo recordings have the same pattern, and the major proportion (96.7%) of signal power is located at the pump speed frequency ±40 Hz. The recordings from the patients show low inter-individual differences except from location of peaks originating from pump speed and harmonics. Electronic stethoscopes could be used for sound recordings, but the dedicated equipment showed a clearer sound spectrum., Discussion: The results show that acoustic analysis can also be performed with the HeartMate 3 and that in vivo and in vitro sound spectrum is similar. The frequency spectra are different from previous devices, and methods for assessing pump function or thrombosis need further evaluation.

Objective: To visualize neural activity in the brachial plexus using magnetoneurography (MNG)., Methods: Using a 124- or 132-channel biomagnetometer system with a superconducting quantum interference device, neuromagnetic fields above the clavicle and neck region were recorded in response to electrical stimulation of the median and ulnar nerves in five asymptomatic volunteers (four men and one woman; age, 27-45 years old). Equivalent currents were computationally reconstructed from neuromagnetic fields and visualized as pseudocolor maps. Reconstructed currents at the depolarization site and compound nerve action potentials (CNAPs) at Erb's point were compared., Results: Neuromagnetic fields were recorded in all subjects. The reconstructed equivalent currents propagated into the vertebral foramina, and the main inflow levels differed between the median nerve (C5/C6-C7/T1 vertebral foramen) and the ulnar nerve (C7/T1-T1/T2). The inward current peaks at the depolarization site and CNAPs showed high linear correlation., Conclusions: MNG visualizes neural activity in the brachial plexus and can differentiate the conduction pathways after median and ulnar nerve stimulations. Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) have reached sensitivity levels that make them viable portable alternatives to traditional superconducting technology for magnetoencephalography (MEG). OPMs do not require cryogenic cooling and can therefore be placed directly on the scalp surface. Unlike cryogenic systems, based on a well-characterised fixed arrays essentially linear in applied flux, OPM devices, based on different physical principles, present new modelling challenges. Here, we outline an empirical Bayesian framework that can be used to compare between and optimise sensor arrays. We perturb the sensor geometry (via simulation) and with analytic model comparison methods estimate the true sensor geometry. The width of these perturbation curves allows us to compare different MEG systems. We test this technique using simulated and real data from SQUID and OPM recordings using head-casts and scanner-casts. Finally, we show that given knowledge of underlying brain anatomy, it is possible to estimate the true sensor geometry from the OPM data themselves using a model comparison framework. This implies that the requirement for accurate knowledge of the sensor positions and orientations a priori may be relaxed. A telomere carrying repetitive sequences ends with a single-stranded overhang. The G-rich overhang could fold back and bind in the major groove of its upstream duplex, forming an antiparallel triplex structure. The telomeric triplex has been proposed to function in protecting chromosome ends. However, we lack strategies to mechanically probe the dynamics of a telomeric triplex. Here, we show that the topological dynamics of a telomeric triplex involves 3' overhang binding at the ds/ssDNA junction inferred by DNA mechanics. Assisted by click chemistry and branched polymerase chain reaction, we developed a rescue-rope-strategy for mechanically manipulating an artificial telomeric DNA with a free end. Using single-molecule magnetic tweezers, we identified a rarely forming (5%) telomeric triplex which pauses at an intermediate state upon unzipping the Watson-Crick paired duplex. Our findings revealed that a mechanically stable triplex formed in a telomeric DNA can resist a force of 20 pN for a few seconds in a physiological buffer. We also demonstrated that the rescue-rope-strategy assisted mechanical manipulation can directly rupture the interactions between the third strand and its targeting duplex in a DNA triplex. Our single-molecule rescue-rope-strategy will serve as a general tool to investigate telomere dynamics and further develop triplex-based biotechnologies., (© The Author(s) 2019. Objective: Resective surgery is the most effective treatment option for patients with refractory epilepsy; however identification of patients who will benefit from epilepsy surgery remains challenging. Synthetic aperture magnetometry and excess kurtosis mapping (SAM(g2)) of magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive tool that warrants further examination in the pediatric epilepsy population. Here, we examined the utility of MEG with SAM(g2) to determine if MEG epileptiform foci correlates with surgical outcome and to develop a predictive model incorporating MEG information to best assess likelihood of seizure improvement/freedom from resective surgery., Methods: 564 subjects who had MEG at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia between 2010-2015 were screened. Clinical epilepsy history and prior electrographic records were extracted and reviewed and correlated with MEG findings. MEG assessments were made by both a neurologist and neuroradiologist. Predictive models were developed to assess the utility of MEG in determining Engel class at one year and five years after resective epilepsy surgery., Results: The number of MEG spike foci was highly associated with Engel class outcome at both one year and five years; however, using MEG data in isolation was not significantly predictive of 5 year surgical outcome. When combined with clinical factors; scalp EEG (single ictal onset zone), MRI (lesional or not), age and sex in a logistic regression model MEG foci was significant for Engel class outcome at both 1 year (p = 0.03) and 5 years (0.02). The percent correctly classified for Engel class at one year was 78.43% and the positive predictive value was 71.43., Significance: MEG using SAM(g2) analysis in an important non-invasive tool in the identification of those patients who will benefit most from surgery. Background: Acute mesenteric ischemia represents a life-threatening gastrointestinal condition. A noninvasive diagnostic modality that identifies mesenteric ischemia patients early in the disease process will enable early surgical intervention. Previous studies have identified significant changes in the small-bowel electrical slow-wave parameters during intestinal ischemia caused by total occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery. The purpose of this study was to use noninvasive biomagnetic techniques to assess functional physiological changes in intestinal slow waves in response to partial mesenteric ischemia., Methods: We induced progressive intestinal ischemia in normal porcine subjects (n = 10) by slowly increasing the occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery at the following percentages of baseline flow: 50%, 75%, 90%, and 100% while simultaneous transabdominal magnetoenterogram (MENG) and serosal electromyogram (EMG) recordings were being obtained., Results: A statistically significant serosal EMG amplitude decrease was observed at 100% occlusion compared with baseline, whereas no significant change was observed for MENG amplitude at any progressive occlusion levels. MENG recordings showed significant changes in the frequency and percentage of power distributed in bradyenteric and normoenteric frequency ranges at 50%, 75%, 90%, and 100% vessel occlusions. In serosal EMG recordings, a similar percent power distribution (PPD) effect was observed at 75%, 90%, and 100% occlusion levels. Serosal EMG showed a statistically significant increase in tachyenteric PPD at 90% and 100% occlusion. We observed significant increase in tachyenteric PPD only at the 100% occlusion level in MENG recordings., Conclusions: Ischemic changes in the intestinal slow wave can be detected early and noninvasively even with partial vascular occlusion. The magnetic susceptibility (MS) measurements are used for rapid and cost-effective soil surveys and for accessing heavy metal contamination worldwide. In the sub-Himalayan plains of India, nearly 6.05 × 10 4 km 2 area of most the fertile land occurs as interfluve of Late Quaternary age between the two major glacier-fed rivers (Ganga and Yamuna). The vast areal expanse of interfluve terminates at the rivers' confluence in Sangam (25°25'13″N-81°53'22″E), Allahabad. This is the first study of MS soil survey of the interfluve region at the confluence comprising 490 samples from 49 locations. The MS values are between 8.84 and 261.25 × 10 -8 m 3 kg -1 and the change is more pronounced (8.84-312.65 × 10 -8 m 3 kg -1 ) with increasing depth. A sudden increase in the MS between 12- (11.28-303.32 × 10 -8 m 3 kg -1 ) and 14-cm (11.21-238.45 × 10 -8 m 3 kg -1 ) depth is observed similar to observations worldwide. The high MS hotspots are aligned parallel to major traffic networks of the city suggesting a major contribution emanating from the anthropogenic load. A significant difference has been noted in the MS values of present-day mid-channel bar sediments of Ganga (25.24 × 10 -8 m 3 kg -1 ) and Yamuna (116.47 × 10 -8 m 3 kg -1 ) Rivers. The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) data showed the presence of heavy (Fe, Ti, Cr, Cu, Cd, Zn, and Pb) and light (H, C, N, and O) elements supporting MS data. The concentration of toxic elements predicted by partial least squares regression (PLSR) approach concurs with magnetic measurements. The topsoil MS values increase up to a depth of ~ 6.25 cm suggesting the dominant role of anthropogenic source for the increased heavy metal concentration compared with basement contributions.

Purpose: To compare measurement of the liver iron concentration in patients with transfusional iron overload by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), using R2*, and by magnetic susceptometry, using a new high-transitiontemperature (high-Tc; operating at 77 K, cooled by liquid nitrogen) superconducting magnetic susceptometer., Methods: In 28 patients with transfusional iron overload, 43 measurements of the liver iron concentration were made by both R2* and high-Tc magnetic susceptometry., Results: Measurements of the liver iron concentration by R2* and high-Tc magnetic susceptometry were significantly correlated when comparing all patients (Pearson's r = 0.91, p < 0.0001) and those with results by susceptometry >7 mg Fe/g liver, dry weight (r = 0.93, p = 0.006). In lower ranges of liver iron, no significant correlations between the two methods were found (0 to <3.2 mg Fe/g liver, dry weight: r = 0.2, p = 0.37; 3.2 to 7 mg Fe/g liver, dry weight: r = 0.41; p = 0.14)., Conclusion: The lack of linear correlation between R2* and magnetic susceptibility measurements of the liver iron concentration with minimal or modest iron overload may be due to the effects of fibrosis and other cellular pathology that interfere with R2* but do not appreciably alter magnetic susceptibility., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Background: The aim of this study was to noninvasively measure regional contributions of vasculature in the human body using magnetohydrodynamic voltages (VMHD) obtained from electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings performed inside MRI's static magnetic field (B0). Integrating the regional VMHD over the Swave-Twave segment of the cardiac cycle (Vsegment) provides a non-invasive method for measuring regional blood volumes, which can be rapidly obtained during MRI without incurring additional cost., Methods: VMHD was extracted from 12-lead ECG traces acquired during gradual introduction into a 3T MRI. Regional contributions were computed utilizing weights based on B0's strength at specified distances from isocenter. Vsegment mapping was performed in six subjects and validated against MR angiograms (MRA)., Results: Fluctuations in Vsegment, which presented as positive trace deflections, were found to be associated with aortic-arch flow in the thoracic cavity, the main branches of the abdominal aorta, and the bifurcation of the common iliac artery. The largest fluctuation corresponded to the location where the aortic arch was approximately orthogonal to B0. The smallest fluctuations corresponded to areas of vasculature that were parallel to B0. Significant correlations (specifically, Spearman's ranked correlation coefficients of 0.96 and 0.97 for abdominal and thoracic cavities, respectively) were found between the MRA and Vsegment maps (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: A novel non-invasive method to extract regional blood volumes from ECGs was developed and shown to be a rapid means to quantify peripheral and abdominal blood volumes., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Objective: The prokinetic action of erythromycin is clinically useful under conditions associated with gastrointestinal hypomotility. Although erythromycin is known to affect the electrogastrogram, no studies have examined the effects that erythromycin has on gastric slow wave magnetic fields., Methods: In this study, gastric slow wave activity was assessed simultaneously using noninvasive magnetogastrogram (MGG), electrogastrogram, and mucosal electromyogram recordings. Recordings were obtained for 30 min prior to and 60 min after intravenous administration of erythromycin at dosages of 3 and 6 mg/kg., Results: MGG recordings showed significant changes in the percentage power distribution of gastric signal after infusion of both 3 and 6 mg/kg erythromycin at t = 1-5 min that persisted for t = 30-40 min after infusion. These changes agree with the changes observed in the electromyogram. We did not observe any statistically significant difference in MGG amplitude before or after injection of either 3 or 6 mg/kg erythromycin. Both 3 and 6 mg/kg erythromycin infusion showed retrograde propagation with a statistically significant decrease in slow wave propagation velocity 11-20 min after infusion. Propagation velocity started returning toward baseline values after approximately 21-30 min for the 3 mg/kg dosage and after 31-40 min for a dosage of 6 mg/kg., Conclusion: Our results showed that the magnetic signatures were sensitive to disruptions in normal slow wave activity induced by pharmacological and prokinetic agents such as erythromycin., Significance: This study shows that repeatable noninvasive bio-electro-magnetic techniques can objectively characterize gastric dysrhythmias and may quantify treatment efficacy in patients with functional gastric disorders.

Objective: To establish a method to measure cauda equina action fields (CEAFs) and visualize the electrical activities of the cauda equina in a broadly aged group of healthy adults., Methods: Using a 124-channel magnetospinography (MSG) system with superconducting interference devices, the CEAFs of 43 healthy volunteers (22-64 years of age) were measured after stimulation of the peroneal nerve at the knee. Reconstructed currents were obtained from the CEAFs and superimposed on the X-ray image. Conduction velocities were also calculated from the waveform of the reconstructed currents., Results: The reconstructed currents were successfully visualized. They flowed into the L5/S1 foramen about 8.25-8.95 ms after the stimulation and propagated cranially along the spinal canal. In 32 subjects (74%), the conduction velocities of the reconstructed currents in the cauda equina could be calculated from the peak latency at the L2-L5 level., Conclusions: MSG visualized the electrical activity of the cauda equina after peroneal nerve stimulation in healthy adults. The mechanical manipulation of magnetic nanoparticles is a powerful approach to probing and actuating biological processes in living systems. Implementing this technique in high-throughput assays can be achieved using biocompatible micromagnet arrays. However, the magnetic properties of these arrays are usually indirectly inferred from simulations or Stokes drag measurements, leaving unresolved questions about the actual profile of the magnetic fields at the micrometer scale and the exact magnetic forces that are applied. Here, we exploit the magnetic field sensitivity of nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond to map the 3D stray magnetic field produced by a single soft ferromagnetic microstructure. By combining this wide-field optical magnetometry technique with magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy, we fully analyze the properties of the micromagnets, including their magnetization saturation and their size-dependent magnetic susceptibility. We further show that the high magnetic field gradients produced by the micromagnets, greater than 10 4 T·m -1 under an applied magnetic field of about 100 mT, enables the manipulation of magnetic nanoparticles smaller than 10 nm inside living cells. This work paves the way for quantitative and parallelized experiments in magnetogenetics and magnetomechanics in cell biology.

Rationale: The respiratory effort index derived from vertical mandibular movements (MM-REI) is a potential marker of increased respiratory effort during sleep. We evaluated the effectiveness of mandibular advancement splint therapy using MM-REI, in comparison with the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and oxygen desaturation index (ODI)., Methods: Fifty-six subjects (median age, 47 years) with OSA treated with a custom mandibular advancement splint (Herbst appliance) were evaluated at the end of the titration procedure when snoring was reported absent by the sleep partner. We employed a magnetometer to capture mandibular movements (Brizzy; Nomics). Mandibular advancement splint efficacy was assessed as the percent change from baseline, using Bayesian multilevel models., Results: At the end of titration, all indices of OSA severity decreased compared with baseline: AHI (-48.9% to -71.1%), ODI (-49.5% to -77.2%), with obstructive hypopnea index and MM-REI showing the largest responses (-70.6% to -88.5% and -69.5% to -96.3%, respectively). MM-REI normalization via reductions in both mandibular movement event rate and duration accurately reflected efficacy of the appliance., Conclusions: The reduction of vertical respiratory mandibular movements estimated by MM-REI and sleep respiratory effort duration accompanied the decrease in obstructive hypopneas, AHI, and ODI when snoring resolved in subjects with OSA treated with an optimally titrated mandibular advancement splint., (Copyright © 2018 American College of Chest Physicians. Optically pumped magnetometers are becoming a promising alternative to cryogenically-cooled superconducting magnetometers for detecting and imaging biomagnetic fields. Magnetic field detection is a completely non-invasive method, which allows one to study the function of excitable human organs with a sensor placed outside the human body. For instance, magnetometers can be used to detect brain activity or to study the activity of the heart. We have developed a highly sensitive miniature optically pumped magnetometer based on cesium atomic vapor kept in a paraffin-coated glass container. The magnetometer is optimized for detection of biological signals and has high temporal and spatial resolution. It is operated at room- or human body temperature and can be placed in contact with or at a mm-distance from a biological object. With this magnetometer, we detected the heartbeat of an isolated guinea-pig heart, which is an animal widely used in biomedical studies. In our recordings of the magnetocardiogram, we can detect the P-wave, QRS-complex and T-wave associated with the cardiac cycle in real time. We also demonstrate that our device is capable of measuring the cardiac electrographic intervals, such as the RR- and QT-interval, and detecting drug-induced prolongation of the QT-interval, which is important for medical diagnostics.

To accurately measure human motion at high-speed, we proposed a simple structure complementary filter, named the Fuzzy Tuned and Second EStimator of the Optimal Quaternion Complementary Filter (FTECF). The FTECF is applicable to inertial and magnetic sensors, which include tri-axis gyroscopes, tri-axis accelerometers, and tri-axis magnetometers. More specifically, the proposed method incorporates three parts, the input quaternion, the reference quaternion, and the fuzzy logic algorithm. At first, the input quaternion was calculated with gyroscopes. Then, the reference quaternion was calculated by applying the Second EStimator of the Optimal Quaternion (ESOQ-2) algorithm on accelerometers and magnetometers. In addition, we added compensation for accelerometers in the ESOQ-2 algorithm so as to eliminate the effects of limb motion acceleration in high-speed human motion measurements. Finally, the fuzzy logic was utilized to calculate the fusion factor for a complementary filter, so as to adaptively fuse the input quaternion with the reference quaternion. Additionally, the overall algorithm design is more simplified than traditional methods. Confirmed by the experiments, using a commercial inertial and magnetic sensors unit and an optical motion capture system, the efficiency of the proposed method was more improved than two well-known methods. The root mean square error (RMSE) of the FTECF was less than 2.2° and the maximum error was less than 5.4°.

Understanding the uterine source of the electrophysiological activity of contractions during pregnancy is of scientific interest and potential clinical applications. In this work, we propose a method to estimate uterine source currents from magnetomyography (MMG) temporal course measurements on the abdominal surface. In particular, we develop a linear forward model, based on the quasistatic Maxwell's equations and a realistic four-compartment volume conductor, relating the magnetic fields to the source currents on the uterine surface through a lead-field matrix. To compute the lead-field matrix, we use a finite element method that considers the anisotropic property of the myometrium. We estimate the source currents by minimizing a constrained least-squares problem to solve the non-uniqueness issue of the inverse problem. Because we lack the ground truth of the source current, we propose to predict the intrauterine pressure from our estimated source currents by using an absolute-value-based method and compare the result with real abdominal deflection recorded during contractile activity. We test the feasibility of the lead-field matrix by displaying the lead fields that are generated by putative source currents at different locations in the myometrium: cervix and fundus, left and right, front and back. We then illustrate our method by using three synthetic MMG data sets, which are generated using our previously developed multiscale model of uterine contractions, and three real MMG data sets, one of which has simultaneous real abdominal deflection measurements. The numerical results demonstrate the ability of our method to capture the local contractile activity of human uterus during pregnancy. Study Design: Observational study of ribcage motion in scoliosis., Objective: To see whether noninvasive ventilation corrected paradoxical inward motion of the ribs during inspiration., Summary of Background Data: Paradoxical inward motion of the ribs is observed after rib fractures, low cervical cord injury, and in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is not well recognized in scoliosis and the mechanism in this group has not been studied., Methods: Linearized magnetometers were used to measure the diameter of the ribcage. Changes in diameter during tidal breathing were recorded during spontaneous ventilation and noninvasive ventilation in 10 subjects with idiopathic or congenital thoracic scoliosis., Results: During spontaneous breathing, the median change in ribcage diameter during inspiration was -1.5 (range -2.3 to -0.8) cm. The median change in ribcage diameter during noninvasive ventilation was +0.5 (range -1.1 to +1.2) cm. Noninvasive ventilation improved paradoxical motion in all subjects, completely correcting it in six., Conclusion: Paradoxical inward motion of the ribcage is seen in some subjects with severe scoliosis. This abnormal motion is improved or abolished by noninvasive ventilation. Since noninvasive ventilation takes over the work of breathing from the respiratory muscles, we suggest that inspiratory muscle contraction causes distortion of part of the ribcage in scoliosis, probably because of the abnormal orientation of diaphragmatic muscle fibers., Level of Evidence: 2.

Background: During the deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode implantation operation with microelectrode recordings (MER) in awake patients, somatotopic testing and test stimulation are performed to improve electrode placement and provide the most beneficial symptom reduction possible, while minimizing side effects. As this procedure is commonly used to alleviate abnormal movements associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) and Essential Tremor (ET), intraoperative assessment of a patient's movements is critical to optimizing surgical benefit. However, despite its importance, movement assessment is typically subjective and qualitative., New Method: Here, we present a detailed description of a low-cost, open-source system as a solution., Results: The described system measures movements intraoperatively and in synchrony with neurophysiological recordings for both online visualization and offline analysis., Comparison With Existing Method(s): Few movement quantification systems are designed to interface with intraoperative neurophysiological recordings; the widespread application of such systems may be limited by their cost and proprietary, closed-source nature. We suggest a novel approach for wide-field imaging of the neural network dynamics of brain slices that uses highly sensitivity magnetometry based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. In-vitro recordings in brain slices is a proven method for the characterization of electrical neural activity and has strongly contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms that govern neural information processing. However, this traditional approach only acquires signals from a few positions, which severely limits its ability to characterize the dynamics of the underlying neural networks. We suggest to extend its scope using NV magnetometry-based imaging of the neural magnetic fields across the slice. Employing comprehensive computational simulations and theoretical analyses, we determine the spatiotemporal characteristics of the neural fields and the required key performance parameters of an NV magnetometry-based imaging setup. We investigate how the technical parameters determine the achievable spatial resolution for an optimal 2D reconstruction of neural currents from the measured field distributions. Finally, we compare the imaging of neural slice activity with that of a single planar pyramidal cell. Our results suggest that imaging of slice activity will be possible with the upcoming generation of NV magnetic field sensors, while single-shot imaging of planar cell activity remains challenging.

Purpose of Review: Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are tested to identify sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) to exploit the advantages of targeted pelvic SLN dissection (sPLND), while circumventing the disadvantages of established radioactive labeling. Here we review recent studies about sPLND in prostate cancer (PCa), including the first results of SLN detection using intraprostatic SPION-injection., Recent Findings: A recent systematic literature review reveals that the diagnostic accuracy of sPLND is comparable with extended PLND (ePLND). sPLND combined with ePLND achieve better node removal by increasing the number of affected nodes. The first sentinel-based nomogram predicting lymph node invasion is established. A sentinel-nomogram update provides comparative predictions relative to ePLND models. sPLND using a magnetometer and SPIONs as a tracer is successful whenever applied to PCa, and SLN identification using MRI after intraprostatic injection of SPIONs is feasible. SLNs are present in an unexpectedly high number outside the ePLND template., Summary: SLN detection outside the ePLND template and the increased diagnostic value of sPLND compared with ePLND supports the individualized extension of PLND using sPLND in PCa. SPION-MRI, combined with a hand-held magnetometer, provides a nonradioactive technique for preoperative and intraoperative SLN localization. Further studies are required to evaluate the effects of sPLND on oncological outcomes.

Background: Phone sensors could be useful in assessing changes in gait that occur with alcohol consumption. This study determined (1) feasibility of collecting gait-related data during drinking occasions in the natural environment, and (2) how gait-related features measured by phone sensors relate to estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC)., Methods: Ten young adult heavy drinkers were prompted to complete a 5-step gait task every hour from 8pm to 12am over four consecutive weekends. We collected 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer data from phone sensors, and computed 24 gait-related features using a sliding window technique. eBAC levels were calculated at each time point based on Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) of alcohol use. We used an artificial neural network model to analyze associations between sensor features and eBACs in training (70% of the data) and validation and test (30% of the data) datasets., Results: We analyzed 128 data points where both eBAC and gait-related sensor data were captured, either when not drinking (n=60), while eBAC was ascending (n=55) or eBAC was descending (n=13). 21 data points were captured at times when the eBAC was greater than the legal limit (0.08mg/dl). Using a Bayesian regularized neural network, gait-related phone sensor features showed a high correlation with eBAC (Pearson's r>0.9), and >95% of estimated eBAC would fall between -0.012 and +0.012 of actual eBAC., Conclusions: It is feasible to collect gait-related data from smartphone sensors during drinking occasions in the natural environment. Purpose: Vestibular rehabilitation exercises have been proven to reduce symptoms and diminish the risk of falls in those with dizziness and balance impairments. The first purpose of this study is to investigate a new method of measuring head movements during habituation vestibular rehabilitation exercises. The second is to explore the relationship between head acceleration measurements during select traditional vestibular rehabilitation exercises and the variables of age, dizziness, and poor balance confidence., Research Design: A descriptive, cross-sectional study, in a university setting., Study Sample: Fifty-two participants, ranging in age from 20 to 96 yr. All were volunteers, with the majority (34) reporting no history of dizziness or balance confidence., Data Collection: Head accelerations were calculated from linear and angular displacements as measured by magnetometry., Results: Head accelerations decreased with increasing age, dizziness, and low balance confidence during four habituation exercises., Conclusions: Head acceleration varies as a function of age, dizziness, and low balance confidence during head movement-based vestibular and balance rehabilitation therapy (habituation) exercises. The magnetometry measurement method used could be applied across the course of treatment to establish predictive measures based on change in acceleration over time. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are widely used in biomedical and clinical applications, including medical imaging, therapeutics, and biological sample processing. Rapid characterization of MNPs, notably their magnetic moments, should facilitate optimization of particle synthesis and accelerate assay development. Here, we report a compact and low-cost magnetometer for fast, on-site MNP characterization. Termed integrated microHall magnetometer (iHM), our device was fabricated using standard semiconductor processes: an array of Hall sensors, transistor switches, and amplifiers were integrated into a single chip, thus improving the detection sensitivity and facilitating chip operation. By applying the iHM, we demonstrate versatile magnetic assays. We measured the magnetic susceptibility and moments of MNPs using small sample amounts (∼10 pL), identified different MNP compositions in mixtures, and detected MNP-labeled single cells.

Blood flow is a clinical metric for monitoring of cardiovascular diseases but current measurements methods are costly or uncomfortable for patients. It was shown that the interaction of the magnetic field (B 0 ) during MRI and blood flow in the body, through the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect, produce voltages (V MHD ) observable through intra-MRI electrocardiography (ECG), which are correlated with regional blood flow. This study shows the reproducibility of V MHD outside the MRI and its application in a portable flow monitoring device. To recreate this interaction outside the MRI, a static neodymium magnet (0.4T) was placed in between two electrodes to induce the V MHD in a single lead ECG measurement. V MHD was extracted, and integrated over to obtain a stroke volume metric. A smartphone-enabled device utilizing this interaction was developed in order to create a more accessible method of obtaining blood flow measurements. The portable device displayed a <6% error compared to a commercial recorder, and was able to successfully record V MHD using the 0.4T magnet. Exercise stress testing showed a V MHD increase of 23% in healthy subjects, with an 81% increase in the athlete. The study demonstrates a new device utilizing MHD interactions with body circulation to obtain blood flow metrics.

Inertial measurement units (IMUs), a practical motion analysis technology for field acquisition, have magnetometers to improve segment orientation estimation. However, sensitivity to magnetic disturbances can affect their accuracy. The objective of this study was to determine the joint angles accuracy of IMUs under different timing of magnetic disturbances of various durations and to evaluate a few correction methods. Kinematics from 12 individuals were obtained simultaneously with an Xsens system where an Optotrak cluster acting as the reference system was affixed to each IMU. A handling task was executed under normal laboratory conditions and imposed magnetic disturbances. Joint angle RMSE was used to conduct a three-way repeated measures analysis of variance in order to contrast the following disturbance factors: duration (0, 30, 60, 120 and 240 s), timing (during the disturbance, directly after it and a 30-second delay after it) and axis (X, Y and Z). The highest joint angle RMSE was observed on rotations about the Y longitudinal axis and during the longer disturbances. It stayed high directly after a disturbance, but returned close to baseline after a 30-second delay. When magnetic disturbances are experienced, waiting 30 s in a normal condition is recommended as a way to restore the IMUs' initial accuracy. Objective: To assess the individual exposure to the static magnetic field (SMF) and the motion-induced time-varying magnetic field (TVMF) generated by activities in an inhomogeneous SMF near high and ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners. The study provides information on the level of exposure to high and ultra-high field MRI scanners during research activities., Materials and Methods: A three-axis Hall magnetometer was used to determine the SMF and TVMF around human 3- and 7-Tesla (T) MRI systems. The 7-T MRI scanner used in this study was passively shielded and the 3-T scanner was actively shielded and both were from the same manufacturer. The results were compared with the exposure restrictions given by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)., Results: The recorded exposure was highly variable between individuals, although they followed the same instructions for moving near the scanners. Maximum exposure values of B = 2057 mT and dB/dt = 4347 mT/s for the 3-T scanner and B = 2890 mT, dB/dt = 3900 mT/s for 7 T were recorded. No correlation was found between reporting the MRI-related sensory effects and exceeding the reference values., Conclusions: According to the results of our single-center study with five subjects, violation of the ICNIRP restrictions for max B in MRI research environments was quite unlikely at 3 and 7 T. Occasions of exceeding the dB/dt limit at 3 and 7 T were almost similar (30% of 60 exposure scenarios) and highly variable among the individuals.

Purpose: Androgen plays an important role in the progression of prostate cancer. In the present study, novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) with good biocompatibility were produced for the selective separation and inhibition of testosterone in prostate cancer cells., Materials and Methods: MMIPs were prepared by using magnetic nanospheres, gelatin, and testosterone as the supporting materials, functional monomer, and the template molecule, respectively. The characterization of the resultant products was investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry. To test whether MMIPs can remove testosterone in biologic samples, human LNCaP (androgen-dependent) and C4-2 (androgen-independent) prostate cancer cells were selected as cell models. The translocation of androgen receptor (AR) was detected by immunofluorescence assay, and the expression of PSA mRNA was detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis. Cell flow cytometry analysis was performed to detect cell cycle arrest., Results: The synthesized nanomaterials (MMIPs) possessed high crystallinity, satisfactory superparamagnetic properties, and uniform imprinted shell, and exhibited high adsorption capacity, fast kinetics, and high selectivity for testosterone. Moreover, the obtained imprinted nanomaterials could selectively enrich and detect testosterone in the LNCaP cell samples as a solid-phase extractant coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography. In addition, the MMIPs could freely enter prostate cancer cells and suppress the translocation of AR into the cell nucleus. We further found that MMIPs inhibited upregulation of AR downstream target genes in LNCaP and C4-2 cells; also, MMIPs inhibited cell growth and induced obvious cell cycle arrest in androgen-dependent LNCaP cells, but had no obvious effect on androgen-independent C4-2 cells., Conclusion: Our results indicate that the obtained imprinted nanomaterials can specifically and effectively bind testosterone and recover it from prostate cancer cells. Moreover, the MMIPs can freely enter prostate cancer cells and block the activation of testosterone-AR pathway. Background: We introduce and demonstrate that the AC biosusceptometry (ACB) technique enables real-time monitoring of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in the bloodstream. We present an ACB system as a simple, portable, versatile, non-invasive, and accessible tool to study pharmacokinetic parameters of MNPs, such as circulation time, in real time. We synthesized and monitored manganese doped iron oxide nanoparticles in the bloodstream of Wistar rats using two different injection protocols. Aiming towards a translational approach, we also simultaneously evaluated cardiovascular parameters, including mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and episodes of arrhythmia in order to secure the well-being of all animals., Results: We found that serial injections increased the circulation time compared with single injections. Immediately after each injection, we observed a transitory drop in arterial pressure, a small drop in heart rate, and no episodes of arrhythmia. Although some cardiovascular effects were observed, they were transitory and easily recovered in both protocols., Conclusions: These results indicate that the ACB system may be a valuable tool for in vivo, real-time MNP monitoring that allows associations with other techniques, such as pulsatile arterial pressure and electrocardiogram recordings, helping ensuring the protocol safety, which is a fundamental step towards clinical applications.

Fetal magnetocardiography provides the requisite precision for diagnostic measurement of electrophysiological events in the fetal heart. Despite its significant benefits, this technique with current cryogenic based sensors has been limited to few centers, due to high cost of maintenance. In this study, we show that a less expensive non-cryogenic alternative, optically pumped magnetometers, can provide similar electrophysiological and quantitative characteristics when subjected to direct comparison with the current technology. Detecting human papillomavirus (HPV) is central in diagnosing and monitoring HPV-related disease. However, limited sensitivity and the wide variability of the HPV genome pose challenges in the identification of HPV genes, particularly high-risk types. This study reports the development of polyethyleneimine-conjugated magnetic nanowires (PEI-MNWs) and their use in the isolation, identification, and analysis of multiple genotypes of HPV DNA from cervical cancer specimens. The nanowires are electrochemically doped with a high density of magnetic nanoparticles and biotin moieties during potentiostatic deposition, thereby allowing conjugating cationic branched polymers to direct the attachment of negatively charged DNA molecules with strong magnetic response. For proof of concept, the rapid and ultrasensitive isolation of HPV DNA is performed at concentrations as low as 10pg/mL with an efficiency of >95%. For clinical optimization, the analytical and clinical sensitivity of PEI-MNWs is compared with that of the Roche Cobas 4800 HPV Test and demonstrates excellent correlation for multiple HPV DNA genotypes with superior threshold cycle values. The high sensitivity, specificity, and good reproducibility of PEI-MNWs are particularly well suited for the recovery of DNA and provide significant and clinically meaningful evidence for the early detection and treatment of HPV-associated cancers., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. We propose a novel combination of methods to study the physical properties of ferric ions and iron-oxide nanoparticles in post-mortem human brain, based on the combination of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and SQUID magnetometry. By means of EPR, we derive the concentration of the low molecular weight iron pool, as well as the product of its electron spin relaxation times. Additionally, by SQUID magnetometry we identify iron mineralization products ascribable to a magnetite/maghemite phase and a ferrihydrite (ferritin) phase. We further derive the concentration of magnetite/maghemite and of ferritin nanoparticles. To test out the new combined methodology, we studied brain tissue of an Alzheimer's patient and a healthy control. Finally, we estimate that the size of the magnetite/maghemite nanoparticles, whose magnetic moments are blocked at room temperature, exceeds 40-50 nm, which is not compatible with the ferritin protein, the core of which is typically 6-8 nm. We believe that this methodology could be beneficial in the study of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease which are characterized by abnormal iron accumulation in the brain.
