In dieser Dissertation wird die gute Einstellbarkeit von synthetischen Antiferromagneten mit dem kollektiven Surface Spin-Flop-Verhalten kombiniert. Es wird der Einfluss der Gesamtschichtdicke untersucht, welche mit dem Abstand der magnetische Oberflächen korreliert. Zudem werden die Dicken der ferromagnetischen Untereinheiten an den Außenseiten verändert, womit die Beiträge der Oberflächen unterdrückt oder verstärkt werden können. Darauffolgend wird die Kontrolle der Oberflächenbeiträge angewendet, um Exchange Bias-Strukturen auf Basis synthetischer Antiferromagnete zu erzeugen. Da diese nicht aus Heterostrukturen intrinsischer Antiferromagnete und Ferromagnete bestehen, wird nicht nur eine gute Abstimmbarkeit erreicht, sondern auch die Materialwahl wird potentiell vereinfacht. Zudem kann der Exchange Bias in synthetischen Antiferromagneten vollständig bei Raumtemperatur beobachtet und gesteuert werden. Im Weiteren wird ein zuvor untersuchtes Konzept zur Stabilisierung der vom Surface Spin-Flop erzeugten vertikalen antiferromagnetischen Domänenwände erweitert. Es wird demonstriert, wie ein Paar koexistierender antiferromagnetischer Domänenwände in Abwesenheit äußerer Magnetfelder und bei tiefen Temperaturen stabil gehalten werden kann. Damit können in Erweiterung der ursprünglichen Konzeptes nun acht anstatt sechs remanenter Zustände durch geeignete Magnetfeldroutinen eingestellt werden.:1. Introduction 2. The influence of the total thickness and thus the distance of the magnetic surfaces is explored. Furthermore, the thickness of the ferromagnetic surface subunits is altered to selectively suppress or enhance the surface contribution. The control of the surface contribution is subsequently employed to create magnetic exchange bias structures based on the synthetic antiferromagnets. If compared to conventional exchange bias systems in heterostructures of intrinsic antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic materials, an exchange bias with full room temperature operation, high tunability and a potential potential much more flexible choice of materials becomes available. Additionally, a previously established concept to stabilize the vertical antiferromagnetic domain walls that originate from the surface spin-flop at remanence is extended to a coexisting pair of antiferromagnetic domain walls. At low temperatures, the coexisting vertical antiferromagnetic domain walls can be stabilized at remanence, too. Furthermore, the total number of different remanent states, which are accessible through different field routines, can be increased from six in the original concept to eight in the more sophisticated concept presented here.:1. Deutscher Titel: Analyse des substratnahen Transports magnetischer Partikel für Lab-on-a-Chip Anwendungen: Modulationen des Streufeldes, Einfluss der Partikeleigenschaften und dreidimensionale Trajektorien

Magnetoresistive (xMR) sensors find extensive application in science and industry, replacing Hall sensors in various low magnetic field environments. While there have been some efforts in increasing the dynamic magnetic field range of xMR sensors, Hall sensors remain to dominate high field applications. In this thesis, the implementation of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in xMR sensors is proposed, in order to increase the magnetic field range of xMR technology from a few hundred Oe to several kOe. The here developed devices cover the gap between established xMR and Hall effect based sensors in terms of their tradeoff in sensitivity and magnetic field range. Through a dominant PMA in either the xMR reference layer (RL) or free layer (FL), the respective layer's magnetic easy axis is oriented out-of-plane (OOP), while that of the other layer is in-plane (IP). Thereby, high magnetic anisotropy fields and magnetic field ranges are realized. First, the PMA RL concept is investigated, where the PMA is generated at the interfaces of Co/Pt multilayers. The multilayers are optimized for high PMA, which includes several fabrication parameters, such as seed layer structure and layer thicknesses. To serve as a magnetically stable reference system, the multilayers are coupled via interlayer exchange coupling, forming perpendicular synthetic antiferromagnets (p-SAFs). These are improved for high field stability and the concept of a double p-SAF is explored, which yields higher exchange fields of up to 10 kOe at room temperature. The magnetization reversal behavior of p-SAFs is investigated and modeled using micromagnetic simulations. Strong spin-canting effects are found to dominate at high magnetic fields. Furthermore, giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effects are studied in stacked p-SAF structures. A simple model is proposed that accurately reproduces the measured transfer curves. It is found that the GMR increases linearly with the number of Ru spacer layers, whereas the AMR has layer thickness dependent and independent contributions. The p-SAF structures are then used for the development of GMR sensors with OOP field sensitivity and high dynamic field ranges. While the optimized p-SAFs enable GMR sensor field ranges up to 9 kOe, an introduced magnetic anisotropy control of different FL systems allows sensor customization for magnetic field range and sensor sensitivity. Tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors on wafer level are fabricated and characterized in terms of sensitivity, hysteresis, and non-linearity. The influence of various fabrication parameters, such as post annealing temperature and magnetic layer thicknesses, is studied. Thereafter, TMR sensors with an IP reference system and OOP FL concept are designed and investigated, where the PMA stems from spin-orbit hybridization at the interface of CoFeB/MgO bilayers. Sensors with PMA FLs in superparmagnetic and ferromagnetic states are fabricated and put in comparison. The influence of post annealing temperature, capping layer, free layer thickness, CoFeB composition and measurement temperature is studied. While ferromagnetic FLs yield greater sensitivities, their effective magnetic anisotropy is also found to be highly temperature dependent. Finally, the developed PMA sensors are compared to established technologies, i.e. Hall effect based sensors, as well as magnetic shape anisotropy and vortex anisotropy xMR sensors. The conclusions drawn from the previous chapters are taken into account to map PMA sensors in the sensitivity/magnetic range spectrum, and to identify their advantages and disadvantages for application purposes. The PMA application in a magnetic angle sensor is presented, which yields smaller angle errors at low magnetic fields than a conventional TMR angle sensor. Magnetoresistive (xMR) Sensoren finden umfangreiche Anwendung in Wissenschaft und Industrie und ersetzen Hall-Sensoren in verschiedenen Umgebungen niedriger Magnetfelder. Obwohl einige Anstrengungen unternommen wurden, um den dynamischen Magnetfeldbereich von xMR-Sensoren zu erhöhen, dominieren Hall-Sensoren weiterhin in Hochfeldanwendungen. In dieser Arbeit wird die Implementierung von senkrechter magnetischer Anisotropie (perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, PMA) in xMR-Sensoren für die Erhöhung des Magnetfeldbereichs der xMR-Technologie von einigen hundert Oe auf mehrere kOe vorgestellt. Die hier entwickelten Bauteile schlieBen die Lücke zwischen etablierten xMR und Hall-Effekt basierten Sensoren hinsichtlich ihres Kompromisses zwischen Empfindlichkeit und Magnetfeldbereich. Durch eine dominante PMA in der xMR Referenzschicht (RL) oder der freien Schicht (FL) ist die magnetische Vorzugsachse der jeweiligen Schicht außerhalb der Ebene (out-of-plane, OOP) ausgerichtet, während die der anderen Schicht in der Ebene (in-plane, IP) liegt. Dadurch werden hohe magnetische Anisotropiefelder und magnetische Feldbereiche realisiert. Zunächst wird das Konzept des PMA RL untersucht, bei welchem die PMA an den Grenzflächen von Co/Pt-Multilagen erzeugt wird. Die Multilagen sind für eine hohe PMA optimiert. Diese Optimierung umfasst mehrere Herstellungsparameter, wie z.B. Saatschichtstruktur und Schichtdicken. Um als magnetisch stabiles Referenzsystem zu dienen, werden die Multilagen über eine Zwischenschichtaustauschwechselwirkung gekoppelt und zu senkrechten synthetischen Antiferromagneten (perpendicular synthetic antiferromagnets, p-SAFs) gebildet. Diese werden für eine hohe Feldstabilität verbessert und das Konzept eines doppelten p-SAF wird untersucht, welcher höhere Austauschfelder von bis zu 10 kOe bei Raumtemperatur erreicht. Das Magnetisierungsumkehrverhalten von p-SAFs wird mit mikromagnetischen Simulationen untersucht und modelliert. Es zeigt sich, dass starke Spinverkantungseffekte bei hohen Magnetfeldern dominieren. Darüber hinaus werden die Effekte des Riesenmagnetowiderstands (giant magnetoresistance, GMR) und des anisotropen Magnetowiderstands (anisotropic magnetoresistance, AMR) in gestapelten p-SAF-Strukturen untersucht. Es wird ein einfaches Modell vorgestellt, das die gemessenen Widerstandskurven akkurat reproduziert. Es zeigt sich, dass der GMR linear mit der Anzahl der Ru Zwischenschichten zunimmt, während der AMR schichtdickenabhängige und unabhängige Beiträge enthält. Die p-SAF-Strukturen werden dann für die Entwicklung von GMR-Sensoren mit OOP Feldempfind-lichkeit und hohen dynamischen Feldbereichen verwendet. Während die optimierten p-SAFs bis zu 9 kOe in den GMR-Sensorfeldbereichen ermöglichen, erlaubt eine eingeführte magnetische Anisotropiesteuerung verschiedener FL-Systeme die Anpassung des Sensors an den Magnetfeldbereich und die Sensorempfindlichkeit. Magnetische Tunnelwiderstand-Sensoren (tunnel magnetoresistance, TMR) auf Wafer-Ebene werden hergestellt und hinsichtlich Empfindlichkeit, Hys-terese und Nichtlinearität charakterisiert. Der Einfluss verschiedener Fertigungsparameter, wie z.B. Wärmebehandlungstemperatur und magnetische Schichtdicken, wird untersucht. Danach werden TMR-Sensoren mit einem IP Referenzsystem und OOP FL-Konzept entworfen und untersucht, bei denen die PMA aus einer Spin-Bahn-Hybridisierung an der Grenzfläche von CoFeB/MgO-Doppelschichten stammt. Sensoren mit PMA FLs in superparmagnetischen und ferromagnetischen Zuständen werden hergestellt und verglichen. Der Einfluss von Wärmebehandlungstemperatur, Deckschicht, freier Schichtdicke, CoFeB-Zusammensetzung und Messtemperatur wird untersucht. Ferromagnetische FLs ergeben höhere Empfindlichkeiten, weisen aber auch starke Temperaturabhängig ihrer effektiven magnetischen Anisotropie auf. AbschlieBend werden die entwickelten PMA-Sensoren mit etablierten Technologien verglichen, d.h. Hall-Effekt basierten Sensoren sowie magnetischen Formanisotropie- und Vortex-Anisotropie-xMR-Sensoren. Die Schlussfolgerungen aus den vorangegangenen Kapiteln werden berücksichtigt, um PMA-Sensoren im Empfindlichkeits-/Magnetfeldbereichsspektrum abzubilden und deren Vor-und Nachteile für Anwendungszwecke aufzuzeigen. Es wird die PMA-Anwendung in einem magnetischen Winkelsensor vorgestellt, die bei geringen Magnetfeldern zu kleineren Winkelfehlern führt als ein konventioneller TMR-Winkelsensor.

L10 - chemically ordered FePt thin films with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of up to 7 MJ/m^3 are one of the most promising materials to overcome existing limitations in data storage density. It has been recently implemented as ultra-high density magnetic storage media for applications in heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) and is of high interest for other spintronic applications, exchange-coupled systems, magnetic random access memories, rare earth free magnets. The development of new technologies will persist further to meet the demands of data growth and higher read-write rates. In this regard, ultrafast all-optical switching of magnetization has the potential to be a future technology of magnetic recording devices. Hence, the design of new magnetic materials, e.g. tuning of FePt properties to make it accessible for AOS, are of high interest from a fundamental as well as a technological point of view. In this thesis different concepts of tuning the properties of FePt thin films were explored using various established experimental techniques in order to take advantage of the remarkable magnetic properties of FePt for AOS. This work is dedicated to the development of a controlled way to change the material properties of FePt, in particular, to stabilize a ferrimagnetic order. In the first part of the results, rapid thermal annealing (RTA) was employed to induce the A1 to L10 phase transformation in FePt/Mn/FePt trilayers. The dependence of magnetic and structural properties on the annealing temperature and Mn concentration was investigated. The formation of a ternary alloy, only partially doped with Mn, and diffusion of Mn to the surface during the RTA process was discovered. This resulted in a gradient of Mn concentration throughout the film and the formation of the oxide at the free surface. The second part of this thesis is dedicated to ion implantation. Tb was chosen as a dopant to reduce the net magnetization and to tune the effective damping in L10 - FePt films. This study includes the evaluation of the disordering process, induced by ion implantation at 10 keV, and its effect on static and dynamic magnetic properties. The main part of the experimental results is focused on epitaxially grown FePt thin films doped with different 3d and 4f elements. It includes a comparison of two rare-earth dopants, Tb and Gd, which couple antiferromagnetically to the Fe moments, resulting in the formation of speri- and ferrimagnetic systems. Depending on concentration and deposition temperature, large rare-earth atoms amorphize their local atomic environment and introduce a temperature-dependent magnetic anisotropy. By contrast, the addition of 3d transition metals such as Cr, Mn, and Cu allows substituting Fe at the L10 lattice sites. All three elements affect PMA and morphology of the film depending on concentration, which results in reduced coercivity and Curie temperature. In the case of Cr and Mn, which couple their magnetic moments antiparallel to Fe, a transition from ferro- to ferri- and to antiferromagnetic order is observed.

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit kontinuierlichen FePt-L10-Dünnschichten. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf den strukturellen Eigenschaften der FePt-Legierung in der chemisch geordneten L10-Phase und deren Auswirkungen auf magnetische Eigenschaften des Systems. Die Quantifizierung der chemischen Ordnung erfolgte durch Röntgenbeugung (XRD). Die magnetische Hysterese wurde durch SQUID-VSM untersucht. Die Analyse der Oberflächentopografie erfolgte mit der Rasterkraftmikroskopie (AFM). Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Herstellung von L10-geordneten und gleichzeitig kontinuierlichen FePt-Schichten mittels Magnetronsputterdeposition bei hohen Temperaturen von 500°C bis 600°C möglich ist. Weiterhin wurde die Abhängigkeit der senkrechten magnetokristallinen Anisotropie von der chemischen Ordnung untersucht. Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die magnetische und strukturelle Untersuchung von Einzelschichtsystemen und Heterostrukturen bestehend aus ferri- und ferromagnetischen Dünnfilmschichten. Im ersten Teil wurden neben binären, zusätzlich ternäre Ferrimagnete bestehend aus den 3d-Übergangsmetallen Eisen (Fe) und Kobalt (Co) und dem schweren 4f-Seltenerdmetall Terbium (Tb) in einem spezifischen Zusammensetzungsbereich hergestellt. In diesem weisen alle Schichten eine senkrecht zur Filmebene ausgerichtete uniaxiale Anisotropieachse und eine amorphe Struktur auf. Die magnetischen Eigenschaften (Magnetisierung, Koerzitivfeldstärke, uniaxiale Anisotropie) wurden in Abhängigkeit von Temperatur, Zusammensetzung und Schichtdicke auf planaren und partiell auf gekrümmten Substraten analysiert. Aus dieser Untersuchung konnte der Einfluss der unterschiedlichen Kopplungsstärken von Co und Fe auf das Schaltverhalten der Legierungen gezeigt werden. Ebenfalls konnte in vereinzelten Tb-dominanten TbFe-Legierungen zusätzliche Satellitenhysteresen bei hohen externen Feldern nachgewiesen werden. Lokale Inhomogenitäten der Zusammensetzung in den amorphen Schichten wurden als Ursache identifiziert. Im nächsten Abschnitt wurden gekoppelte Heterostrukturen bestehend aus ausgewählten TbCoFe-Legierungen mit einer konstanten Schichtdicke (20 nm) und ferromagnetischen [Co/Pt]–Multilagen in Hinblick auf den sogenannten Exchange-Bias Effekt untersucht. In Abhängigkeit von der Zusammensetzung des Ferrimagneten und der Temperatur wurden die Austauschfelder des Ferromagneten bestimmt. Dessen magnetische Eigenschaften und der Schicht-Aufbau wurden hierbei nicht verändert. Es konnte eine Abhängigkeit der aufgenommenen Austauschfelder vom Co/Fe Verhältnis, sowie vom gewählten Tb-Anteil aufgezeigt werden. Zusätzliche XMCD-Analysen ermöglichten die Bestimmung der Ausdehnung der ausgebildeten Domänenwand im Ferrimagneten. Anschließend wurden zusätzlich die ferromagnetischen [Co/Pt]n-Multilagen systematisch in den magnetischen Eigenschaften variiert. Neben der Co-Einzelschichtdicke wurde die Wiederholungszahl n variiert. Als ferrimagnetischer Kopplungspartner wurden exemplarisch jeweils eine Tb- und 3d-dominante binäre TbFe- und TbCo-Legierung (20 nm) gewählt. Temperaturabhängig wurden die Kopplungseigenschaften (Schaltverhalten, Austauschfelder) aller kombinierter Heterostrukturen analysiert. Neben der verschobenen Hysteresen des Ferromagneten konnten die des Ferrimagneten aufgezeigt werden. In Heterostrukturen mit Co-basierten Ferrimagneten zeigte sich eine Systematik der Austauschfelder in Abhängigkeit von den magnetischen Eigenschaften des Ferromagneten, im Gegensatz zu Heterostrukturen mit Fe-basierten Ferrimagneten. Dieser Unterschied wird in einer starken Abhängigkeit der Kopplungsstärke an der Grenzfläche von den Abständen der Fe-Fe Paare nach der Durchmischung während des Wachtumsprozesses begründet. Im vierten Abschnitt wurde ein auf Fe-basiertes ferromagnetisches FePtCu-System als Kopplungspartner gewählt. Hierbei sollte der Kopplungsmechanismus basierend auf einer reinen Fe-Fe Wechselwirkung an der Grenzfläche analysiert werden. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass bei diesen Systemen die Wechselwirkung der Einzelschichten so schwach ist, dass keine Verschiebung einer magnetischen Hysterese entlang der Feldachse resultiert. Erst bei zusätzlicher Co-Zufuhr in die ferrimagnetische Schicht, konnte der Exchange-Bias Effekt mit hohen Austauschfeldern nachgewiesen werden. Zuletzt wurde eine Bilage bestehend aus zwei rein Fe-basierten Ferrimagneten unterschiedlicher Zusammensetzung (Tb36Fe64/Tb19Fe81) und variierender Einzelschichtdicke, jedoch gleichbleibender Gesamtschichtdicke von 20 nm, analysiert. Abhängig vom gewählten Schichtdickenverhältnis und der Temperatur konnte die gleichzeitig in positive und negative Feldrichtung auftretende Verschiebung von Hysteresen mit unterschiedlicher Form und unterschiedlich hohen Austauschfeldern unterhalb von 200 K beobachtet werden. Ein über den Kühlprozess und der Durchmischung hervorgerufener hartmagnetischer Bereich an der Grenzfläche ist als Ursache für diesen Effekt zu sehen.

In Zusammenhang mit diesem Materialsystem wurden insbesondere folgende Themengebiete behandelt: magnetische Anisotropie, Valenzbandstruktur-Rechnungen, anisotroper Magnetowiderstand, Magnetotransport, anomaler Hall-Effekt, temperaturabhängiger Widerstand.

Der Einsatz nanostrukturierter Magnetmaterialien als Speicherschichten in Festplatten stellt ein vielversprechendes Konzept zur weiteren Erhöhung der erreichbaren Speicherdichten im Vergleich zu den heute eingesetzten granularen Medien dar. Für die Realisierung dieses Konzeptes ist eine detaillierte Kenntnis der Struktureigenschaften und deren Einfluss auf das magnetische Verhalten der einzusetzenden Schichten erforderlich. Für die vorliegende Arbeit wurden drei verschiedene magnetische Materialien ausgewählt und insbesondere mit elektronenmikroskopischen Methoden in struktureller Hinsicht untersucht. Dazu zählen ferromagnetische (FePt)(100-x)Cu(x) -Schichten, ferromagnetische [Co/Pt]n -Multilagen sowie ferrimagnetische Fe(100-x)Tb(x) -Schichten. Der Schwerpunkt der Untersuchungen lag dabei auf der Korrelation zwischen strukturellen und magnetischen Eigenschaften sowie im Einfluss der Nanostrukturierung auf das magnetische Verhalten der Schichten. In dieser Hinsicht wurden Aspekte der durch die Struktur bedingten magnetischen Anisotropie in Form von magnetokristalliner und Grenzflächenanisotropie betrachtet. Zudem wurde das Kopplungsverhalten zwischen einzelnen Strukturelementen in nanostrukturierten Schichten untersucht. Aufbauend auf die Untersuchung der drei genannten Materialien wurden [Co/Pt]n und Fe(100-x)Tb(x) ausgewählt zum Aufbau eines Systems mit zwei magnetischen Komponenten: Fe(80)Tb(20) / [Co/Pt]10. Die Untersuchungen konzentrierten sich dabei auf die Morphologie der Grenzfläche zwischen den beiden Bestandteilen und deren Einfluss auf den Exchange Bias, der in diesem System vorliegt.

For the realization of a programmable logic device, or indeed any nanoscale device, we need a reliable method to probe the magnetization direction of local domains. For this purpose we extend investigations on the previously discovered tunneling anisotropic magneto resistance effect (TAMR) by scaling the pillar size from 100 µm down to 260 nm. We start in chapter 4 with a theoretical description of the TAMR effect and show experimental data of miniaturized pillars in chapter 5. With such small TAMR probes we are able to locally sense the magnetization on the 100 nm scale. Sub-micron TAMR and anisotropic magneto resistance (AMR) measurements of sub-millimeter areas show that the behavior of macroscopic (Ga,Mn)As regions is not that of a true macrospin, but rather an ensemble average of the behavior of many nearly identical macrospins. This shows that the magnetic anisotropies of the local regions are consistent with the behavior extracted from macroscopic characterization. A fully electrically controllable read-write memory device out the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As is presented in chapter 6. The structure consists of four nanobars which are connected to a circular center region. The first part of the chapter describes the lithography realization of the device. We make use of the sub-micron TAMR probes to read-out the magnetization state of a 650 nm central disk. Four 200 nm wide nanobars are connected to the central disk and serve as source and drain of a spin-polarized current. With the spin-polarized current we are able to switch the magnetization of the central disk by means of current induced switching. Injecting polarized holes with a spin angular momentum into a magnetic region changes the magnetization direction of the region due to the p-d exchange interaction between localized Mn spins and itinerant holes. The magnetization of the central disk can be controlled fully electrically and it can serve as one bit memory element as part of a logic device. In chapter 7 we discuss the domain wall resistance in (Ga,Mn)As. At the transition from nanobars to central disk we are able to generate 90° and 180° domain walls and measure their resistance. The results presented from chapter 5 to 7 combined with the preexisting ultracompact (Ga,Mn)As-based memory cell of ref. [Papp 07c] are the building blocks needed to realize a fully functioning programmable logic device. The work of ref. [Papp 07c] makes use of lithographically engineered strain relaxation to produce a structure comprised of two nanobars with mutually orthogonal uniaxial easy axes, connected by a narrow constriction. Measurements showed that the resistance of the constriction depends on the relative orientation of the magnetization in the two bars. The programmable logic device consists of two central disks connected by a small constriction. The magnetization of the two central disks are used as the input bits and the constriction serves as the output during the logic operation. The concept is introduced in the end of chapter 6 and as an example for a logic operation an XOR gate is presented. The functionality of the programmable logic scheme presented here can be straightforwardly extended to produce multipurpose functional elements, where the given geometry can be used as various different computational elements depending on the number of input bits and the chosen electrical addressing. The realization of such a programmable logic device is shown in chapter 8, where we see that the constriction indeed can serve as a output of the logic operation because its resistance is dependent on the relative magnetization state of both disks. Contrary to ref. [Papp 07c], where the individual magnetic elements connected to the constriction only have two non-volatile magnetic states, each disk in our scheme connected to the constriction has four non-volatile magnetic states. Switching the magnetization of a central disk with an electrical current does not only change the TAMR read-out of the respective disk, it also changes the resistance of the constriction. The resistance polar plot of the constriction maps the relative magnetization states of the individual disks. The presented device design serves as an all-electrical, all-semiconductor logic element. It combines a memory cell and data processing in a single monolithic paradigm., Für die Realisierung eines programmierbaren Logikelements oder beliebiger nanometer großer Bauteile, brauchen wir eine verlässlige Methode, um die Magnetisierungsrichtung lokaler Domänen auzulesen. Dafür erweitern wir die Untersuchungen an TAMR (tunneling magneto resistance) Strukturen und skalieren die Fläche des Tunnelkontakts von 100 µm auf 260 nm. In Kapitel 4 geben wir zunächst eine theoretische Beschreibung des TAMR Effekts und zeigen darauf im folgenden Kapitel 5 experimentelle Daten der miniaturisierten Tunnelkontakte. Mit diesen TAMR-Kontakten ist es möglich die Magnetisierung lokal in einer Grössenordnung von 100 nm zu detektieren. Sub-micron TAMR-Messungen und anisotrope Magnetowiderstandmessungen (AMR) an sub-millimeter Gebieten zeigen, dass das Verhalten von makrokopischen (Ga,Mn)As nicht das eines Makrospins ist, sondern ein Ensembledurchschnitt von vielen fast identischen Makrospins. Dieses Ergebnis ist mit der makroskopischen Beschreibung der lokalen magnetischen Aniotropien konform.\\ Ein rein elektrisch kontrollierbares Read-Write Speicherelement aus dem ferromagnetischen Halbleiter (Ga,Mn)As wird in Kapitel 6 gezeigt. Das Element besteht aus vier 200 nm breiten Streifen, die mit einer kreisförmigen zentralen Disc verbunden sind. Der erste Teil des Kapitels beschreibt die einzelnen Lithographieschritte zur Herstellung des Elements. Zum Auslesen der Magnetisierungsrichtung der zentralen Disc mit einem Durchmesser von 650 nm verwenden wir einen miniaturisierten TAMR-Kontakt. Die 200 nm breiten Streifen dienen als Quelle eines spinpolarisierten Stromes in die zentrale Disc. Das Injezieren von polarisierten Löchern mit einem Spin-Drehimpuls in eine magnetische Region verändert die Magnetisierung der Region durch p-d Austauschwechselwirkung zwischen lokalisierten Mn-Spins und den Löchern. Die Magnetisierung der zentralen Disc kann rein elektrisch kontrolliert werden and als Bit eines Logikelementes verwendet werden. In Kapitel 7 untersuchen wir den Domänenwiderstand in (Ga,Mn)As. Am Übergang von den Streifen zur zentralen Disc ist es möglich 90°- und 180° Domänenwände zu erzeugen und deren Widerstand zu messen.\\ Die Ergebnisse von Kapitel 5 bis 7, kombiniert mit dem bereits existierenden Ergebnissen einer ultrakompakten (Ga,Mn)As-basierenden Speicherzelle von Ref. [Papp 07c], sind die Schlüsselelemente die man zur Realisierung eines programmierbaren Logikelements benötigt. Die Arbeit von Referenz [Papp 07c] nutzt Lithographie induzierte Deformationsrelaxation, um eine Struktur zu erzeugen, die aus zwei senkrechten Streifen besteht und durch eine Verengung verbunden sind. Der Widerstand dieser Verengung ist von der relativen Magnetisierungsorientierung der beiden Streifen abhängig. Das programmierbare Logikelement besteht aus zwei zentralen Discs, die mittels einer schmalen Verengung verbunden sind. Die Magnetisierung der beiden zentralen Discs dienen als Eingänge und die Verengung als Ausgang während der Logikoperation. Das Konzept wird am Ende des sechsten Kapitels eingeführt und als Beispiel für eine Logikoperation wird ein XOR-Gate präsentiert. Die Funktionalität des hier gezeigten programmierbaren Logikschemas kann Problemlos auf ein multifunktionales Element erweitert werden. Diese Geometrie kann abhängig von der Anzahl der Eingänge und der gewählten Adressierung für verschiedene Rechenelemente genutzt werden. \\ Die Realisierung eines programmierbaren Logikelements ist in Kapitel 8 gezeigt. Der Widerstand der Verengung hängt von der relativen Magnetisierungsrichtung der beiden zentralen Discs ab und wird als Ausgang während der Logikoperation verwendet. Im Gegensatz zu Referenz [Papp 07c], indem die einzelnen über die Verengung verbundenen magnetischen Elemente jeweils nur zwei nicht-flüchtige magnetische Zustände besitzen, hat jede zentrale Disc in unserem Schema vier nicht-flüchtige magnetische Zustände. Das Verändern der Magnetisierungsrichtung einer zentralen Disc durch einen elektrischen Strom kann durch den jeweiligen TAMR-Kontakt und durch die Widerstandänderung der Verengung gemessen werden. Der Widerstands-Fingerabdruck (resistance polar plot) der Verengung zeigt die verschiedenen relativen Magnetisierungszutände der zentralen Discs.\\ Das hier präsentierte Konzept dient als reines Halbleiter und rein-elektrisches Logikelement. Es kombiniert eine Speicherzelle und Datenverarbeitung in einem neuartigen monolithischen Bauelement.

Iron filled carbon nanotubes (FeCNT) can be described as carbon nanotubes which contain an iron nanowire of several micrometers length and a diameter of approximately 10-100 nm. The carbon shells protect the iron core from oxidation and mechanical damage thus enabling a wide range of applications that require a long-term stability. The magnetic properties of the enclosed nanowire are in part determined by its small size and elongated shape. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) measurements show that the iron wire exhibits a single domain behavior. Due to the large shape anisotropy it is magnetized along the long wire axis in the remanent state. Two magnetic monopoles of opposing polarity are located at the wire extremities. Depending on the structure and geometry of the individual nanowire, switching fields in the range of 100-400 mT can be found when the external field is applied along the FeCNT’s easy axis. Cantilever magnetometry shows that the switching can be attributed to a thermally assisted magnetization reversal mechanism with the nucleation and propagation of a domain wall. The defined magnetic properties of individual FeCNT combined with their mechanical strength make them ideal candidates for an application as high resolution high stability MFM probes. The fabrication of such probes can be achieved with the help of a micromanipulation setup in a scanning electron microscope. FeCNT MFM probes achieve a sub 25 nm lateral magnetic resolution. MFM measurements with FeCNT MFM probes in external fields show that the magnetization of these probes is exceptionally stable compared to conventional coated MFM probes. This greatly simplifies the data evaluation of such applied field MFM measurements. The emphasis of this work was put on the calibration of FeCNT probes to enable straightforward quantitative MFM measurements. The defined shape of the magnetically active iron nanowire allows an application of a point monopole description. Microscale parallel current carrying lines that produce a defined magnetic field are used as calibration structures to determine the effective magnetic moment of different MFM probes. The line geometry is varied in order to produce multiple magnetic field decay lengths and investigate the influence on the effective probe moment. The results show that while the effective magnetic monopole moment of a conventional MFM probe increases with an increasing sample stray field decay length, the effective moment of a FeCNT MFM probe remains constant. This enables a MFM probe calibration that stays valid for a large variety of magnetic samples. Furthermore, the fitted monopole moment of a FeCNT probe (in the order of 10E-9 Am) is consistent with the moment calculated from the nanowire geometry and the saturation magnetization of iron.

Chemically ordered FePt is one of the most promising materials to reach the ultimate limitations in storage density of future magnetic recording devices due to its high uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a corrosion resistance superior to rare-earth based magnets. In this study, FePt and FePt/Cu bilayers have been sputter deposited at room temperature onto thermally oxidized silicon wafers, glass substrates and self-assembled arrays of spherical SiO2 particles with diameters down to 10 nm. Millisecond flash lamp annealing, as well as conventional rapid thermal annealing was employed to induce the phase transformation from the chemically disordered A1 phase into the chemically ordered L10 phase. The influence of the annealing temperature, annealing time and the film thickness on the ordering transformation and (001) texture evolution of FePt films with near equiatomic composition was studied. Whereas flash lamp annealed FePt films exhibit a polycrystalline morphology with high chemical L10 order, rapid thermal annealing can lead to the formation of chemically ordered FePt fifilms with (001) texture on amorphous SiO2/Si substrates. The resultant high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and large coercivities up to 40 kOe are demonstrated. Simultaneuosly to the ordering transformation, rapid thermal annealing to temperatures exceeding 600 °C leads to a break up of the continuous FePt film into separated islands. This dewetting behavior was utilized to create regular arrays of FePt nanostructures on SiO2 particle templates with periods down to 50 nm. The addition of Cu improves the (001) texture formation and chemcial ordering for annealing temperatures T < 600 °C. In addition, the magnetic anisotropy and the coercivity of the ternary FePtCu alloy can be effectively tailored by adjusting the Cu content. The prospects of FePtCu based exchange spring media, as well as the magnetic properties of FePtCu nanostructures fabricated using e-beam and nanoimprint lithography have been investigated.

GaMnAs belongs to the group of dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS). It shows a pronounced magnetic anisotropy (MA) and striking anisotropic magneto-resistance (AMR) effects. The magnetic properties of DMS can be controlled by doping, material composition and strain. Therefore, detailed knowledge of factors affecting the magnetic anisotropy in GaMnAs plays a key role for potential spintronic applications. The goal of this work was the detailed investigation of the impact of parameters like vertical strain, hole concentration, substrate orientation and patterning on the MA. A method is introduced enabling us to determine the MA from angle-dependent magnetotransport measurements. This method was used to analyze the impact of vertical strain on the MA in a series of GaMnAs grown on relaxed InGaAs-templates. In these layers a significant dependence of the MA on strain was found, resulting in a transition of the magnetic easy axis with increasing strain from in-plane to out-of-plane. The influence of substrate orientation on the magnetic properties of GaMnAs was studied in a series of GaMnAs layers on (001)- and (113)A-oriented GaAs substrates. In the (113)A-oriented layer an additional uniaxial contribution to the MA was observed. This contribution could be ascribed to a monoclinic distortion of the GaMnAs lattice for (113)A samples. The differences in the magnetic properties of (113)A- and (001)-GaMnAs have been used to realize quasi-planar GaMnAs structures consisting of laterally confined regions with different magnetic materials. Finally wires were prepared from 40 nm thick GaMnAs. Patterning of GaMnAs layers results in a change of shape anisotropy and in (partial) relaxation processes in the GaMnAs structures. We found the anisotropy contribution resulting from anisotropic relaxation to be dominant. This can be used for local engineering of the MA in GaMnAs, opening new possibilities for the design and realization of novel GaMnAs-based functional structures.

The magnetic anisotropy plays a major role towards the stability of information stored in the magnetic recording media and the properties of devices using the giant magnetoresistive effect. The objective of this thesis work was to tailor the magnetic anisotropy of thin films and multilayers (MLs) by varying the magnetoelastic and the unidirectional anisotropy energy contributions. The first part of this thesis work addresses the optimization of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) by applying a persistent in-plane biaxial stress. The latter has been applied by a novel method that involves deposition of the functional layers on a Ta substrate, which is subsequently loaded with hydrogen. The method has been successfully demonstrated in Ni and CoFe thin films and Co/Pd MLs. In the case of Co/Pd MLs, which are interesting for perpendicular magnetic recording, an increase of about 100% in the PMA has been observed upon applying a biaxial stress of 2.1 GPa. This shows that the application of the biaxial stress provides an additional degree of freedom to optimize the PMA and therefore the magnetic properties of the Co/Pd MLs. The second part of the thesis addresses the optimization of unidirectional anisotropy associated with the exchange bias in the NiMn/Co system by pulsed laser irradiation. To achieve the antiferromagnetic NiMn phase, annealing at elevated temperatures is required which may cause unwanted interdiffusion between the layers. By applying Nd:YAG Q-switch laser pulses with an optimum fluence, the microstructure of the NiMn layer has been modified without interdiffusion to the Co layer. After subsequent conventional annealing treatment, the laser irradiated samples showed about 100% increase in the exchange bias field compared to that of the non-irradiated samples under identical annealing conditions. This demonstrates that the pulsed laser irradiation provides a novel way to optimize the magnetic properties of NiMn based exchange bias systems.

In this thesis the combination of the magnetic patterning of the unidirectional anisotropy and the tunnel magnetoresistance effect is investigated. In my diploma thesis, it has been shown that it is in principle possible to use the magnetic patterning by ion bombardment to magnetically structure the pinned layer in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with alumina barrier. Furthermore, it has been shown that the side effects which have been observed after this treatment can be at least reduced by an additional heating step. Starting from this point, the applicability of ion bombardment induced magnetic patterning (IBMP) in general and the combination of IBMP and MTJs in particular is investigated and new applications are developed.

Die moderne magnetische Datenspeicherung basiert auf der Verwendung magnetisch harter Legierungen als Speichermedium. Um die Speicherflächendichte (Anzahl der Bits pro Fläche) zu erhöhen, benötigt man hohe Werte der magnetischen Anisotropie, um die Richtung der Magnetisierung zu stabilisieren und somit das Kriterium der thermischen Stabilität zu erfüllen. Die derzeit in der Festplattenproduktion typischerweise genutzte magnetische Legierung ist granulares CoCrPt:SiO2 mit einer Korngröße von durchschnittlich 7 nm und einer Anisotropiekonstanten von ca. 0.4 MJ/m^3. Die vorausgesagte Grenze der maximal erreichbaren Flächendichte mit dieser Stoffverbindung liegt jedoch bei 500 600 GBit/in^2. Um der Nachfrage nach höheren Speicherdichten nachzukommen, müssen neue magnetische Legierungen verwendet werden. Die vielversprechendsten Kandidaten für zukünftige magnetische Datenspeicher mit extrem hohen Speicherdichten sind chemisch L10 geordnete FePt und CoPt Legierungen mit Anisotropiekonstanten von 10 MJ/m^3 bzw. 3 MJ/m^3. Um diese hohen Werte der uniaxialen magnetischen Anisotropie zu erreichen, muss die Substrat-Temperatur während der Molekularstrahlepitaxie (MBE) bzw. während des Sputterns höher als 500°C liegen. Für die Anwendung in der industriellen Fertigung muss die Ordnungstemperatur von FePt und CoPt jedoch reduziert werden. Ein erfolgversprechender Ansatz zur Reduktion der Ordnungstemperatur beruht auf der Erhöhung der Adatom-Mobilität durch Aufwachsen auf einer chemisch gesättigten Oberfläche. Hierzu wurde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit der Versuch unternommen, die Ordnungstemperatur einer äquiatomaren CoPt Legierung durch Aufwachsen auf einer WSe2(0001) van-der-Waals Oberfläche zu erniedrigen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie sind in den Kapiteln 4 und 5 zusammengefasst.Das Konzept vorstrukturierter Speichermedien, bei denen eine Informationseinheit (Bit) in einer einzelnen Nanostruktur gespeichert wird, stellt eine weiter Möglichkeit zur Erhöhung der Datendichte dar. Ein erfolgversprechender Weg zur Herstellung solcher Medien mit extrem hoher Datendichte für die magnetische Datenspeicherung basiert auf selbst-anordnenden magnetischen Nanostrukturen. Hierzu wurde ein interessanter Zugang vorgestellt, der die Selbstanordnung nicht-magnetischer Nanopartikel mit den definierten magnetischen Eigenschaften eines auf den Partikeln deponierten Films kombiniert. Dies ermöglicht auf elegante Weise die Herstellung magnetischer Nanostrukturen mit, durch die FePt und CoPt Legierungen gegebener, hoher senkrechter magnetischer Anisotropie, wie sie für hohe thermische Stabilität gebraucht wird. Die Untersuchung der magnetischen und strukturellen Eigenschaften dieser Legierungen auf amorphen SiO2 Nanopartikeln wird in den Kapiteln 6, 7 und 8 behandelt.

29849600 bytes, Nachdem in früheren Veröffentlichungen das experimentell sehr gut untersuchte ferromagnetische, kubisch flächenzentrierte (fcc) Nickel mit der Multiband-Gutzwiller-Methode unter Berücksichtigung der Spin-Bahn-Kopplung untersucht worden ist, und dabei eine sehr gute Übereinstimmung mit dem Experiment erzielt worden ist, wurde im Rahmen dieser Dissertation die Multiband-Gutzwiller-Methode unter Berücksichtigung der Spin-Bahn-Kopplung auf ferromagnetisches, kubisch raumzentriertes (bcc) Nickel angewendet. Da bcc Nickel bisher experimentell noch nicht ausreichend untersucht worden ist, sind einige der erhaltenen Resultate Voraussagen, die experimentell verifiziert werden können. Dies gilt für Details der Bandstruktur, die sich von der ebenfalls berechneten Bandstruktur in Dichtefunktionaltheorie unterscheiden, für die Topologie des Fermikörpers, der durch den Einfluss der Spin-Bahn-Kopplung verändert wird, und den orbitalen Anteil des magnetischen Momentes, der durch die Spin-Bahn-Kopplung induziert wird.

In dieser Arbeit werden das Wachstum mittels Molekularstrahlepitaxie und die Eigenschaften der Ferromagneten Fe und Fe_3Si auf niedrig-symmetirschen GaAs(113)A-Substraten studiert. Drei wichtige Aspekte werden untersucht: (i) Wachstum und strukturelle Charakterisierung, (ii) magnetische Eigenschaften und (iii) Magnetotransporteigenschaften der Fe und Fe_3Si Schichten auf GaAs(113)A-Substraten. Das Wachstum der Fe- und Fe_3Si-Schichten wurde bei einer Wachstumstemperatur von = bzw. 250 °C optimiert. Bei diesen Wachstumstemperaturen zeigen die Schichten eine hohe Kristallperfektion und glatte Grenz- und Oberflächen analog zu [001]-orientierten Schichten. Weiterhin wurde die Stabilität der Fe_(3+x)Si_(1-x) Phase über einen weiten Kompositionsbereich innerhalb der Fe_3Si-Stoichiometry demonstriert. Die Abhängigkeit der magnetischen Anisotropie innerhalb der Schichtebene von der Schichtdicke weist zwei Bereiche auf: einen Beresich mit dominanter uniaxialer Anisotropie für Fe-Schichten = 70 MLs. Weiterhin wird eine magnetische Anisotropie senkrecht zur Schichtebene in sehr dünnen Schichten gefunden. Der Grenzflächenbeitrag sowohl der uniaxialen als auch der senkrechten Anisotropiekonstanten, die aus der Dickenabhängigkeit bestimmt wurden, sind unabhängig von der [113]-Orientierung und eine inhärente Eigenschaft der Fe/GaAs-Grenzfläche. Die anisotrope Bindungskonfiguration zwischen den Fe und den As- oder Ga-Atomen an der Grenzfläche wird als Ursache für die uniaxiale magnetische Anisotropie betrachtet. Die magnetische Anisotropie der Fe_3Si-Schichten auf GaAs(113)A-Substraten zeigt ein komplexe Abhängigkeit von der Wachstumsbedingungen und der Komposition der Schichten. In den Magnetotransportuntersuchungen tritt sowohl in Fe(113)- als auch in Fe_3Si(113)-Schichten eine antisymmetrische Komponente (ASC) im planaren Hall-Effekt (PHE) auf. Ein phänomenologisches Modell, dass auf der Kristallsymmetrie basiert, liefert ein gute Beschreibung sowohl der ASC im PHE als auch des symmetrischen, anisotropen Magnetowiderstandes. Das Modell zeigt, dass die beobachtete ASC als Hall-Effekt zweiter Ordnung beschreiben werden kann. In this work, the molecular-beam epitaxial growth and properties of ferromagnets, namely Fe and Fe_3Si are studied on low-symmetric GaAs(113)A substrates. Three important aspects are investigated: (i) growth and structural characterization, (ii) magnetic properties, and (iii) magnetotransport properties of Fe and Fe_3Si films on GaAs(113)A substrates. The growth of Fe and Fe_3Si films is optimized at growth temperatures of 0 and 250 degree Celsius, respectively, where the layers exhibit high crystal quality and a smooth interface/surface similar to the [001]-oriented films. The stability of Fe_(3+x)Si_(1-x) phase over a range of composition around the Fe_3Si stoichiometry is also demonstrated. The evolution of the in-plane magnetic anisotropy with film thickness exhibits two regions: a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) for Fe film thicknesses = 70 MLs. The existence of an out-of-plane perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is also detected in ultrathin Fe films. The interfacial contribution of both the uniaxial and the perpendicular anisotropy constants, derived from the thickness-dependent study, are found to be independent of the [113] orientation and are hence an inherent property of the Fe/GaAs interface. The origin of the UMA is attributed to anisotropic bonding between Fe and As or Ga at the interface, similarly to Fe/GaAs(001). The magnetic anisotropy in Fe_3Si on GaAs(113)A exhibits a complex dependence on the growth conditions and composition. Magnetotransport measurements of both Fe(113) and Fe_3Si(113) films shows the striking appearance of an antisymmetric component (ASC) in the planar Hall effect (PHE). A phenomenological model based on the symmetry of the crystal provides a good explanation to both the ASC in the PHE as well as the symmetric anisotropic magnetoresistance. The model shows that the observed ASC component can be ascribed to a second-order Hall effect.

The increasing use of information technology has lead to the development of numerous new concepts and processes in the production of electronic devices and magnetic data storage systems. The preparation and lithographic patterning of thin films plays a central role in this context. This work was motivated by the progress in these fields. The focus lies on the magnetic anisotropy and preparation of magnetotransport structures.The theoretical basis of magnetic anisotropy and magnetotransport is explained in chapters 1 and 2. Experimental methods and setups used for this work are introduced in chapter 3. In chapter 4 an analysis of the magnetic anisotropy of Fe(110) thin films on sapphire substrates with a Mo(110) buffer is shown. Samples with different Fe(110) layer thicknesses were grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and examined ex situ by Brillouin light scattering (BLS). The frequency of the Damon Eshbach spin wave mode was measured for each thickness as a function of the angle between the external magnetic saturation field and a selected in plane direction of the sample. By fitting the spin wave frequency with a continuum model the relevant magnetic anisotropy constants were extracted. A dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a uniaxial in-plane anisotropy on the thickness could be observed which is attributed to anisotropic relaxation of lattice distortion in the Fe(110) layer.A magnetooptical Kerr effect (MOKE) study of micropatterned exchange bias systems with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy introduced in chapter 5 shows that perpendicular anisotropy as well as exchange bias are influenced, but not destroyed by the patterning process. Structures in the range of 200 nm to several microns were prepared and examined. The coercivity of the microstructures grows with decreasing lateral dimension, while the exchange bias is reduced. The comparison of the temperature dependence of coercivity and exchange bias in microstructures and an unpatterned reference sample indicates an influence of patterning on the distribution of local blocking temperatures. In chapter 6 two different methods of preparing transport structures on the micrometer to nanometer scale are introduced. The operativeness of the devices is proven by magnetotransport measurements. The first introduced process allows the preparation of current perpendicular to the plane (cpp) devices from pre-deposited multilayer samples. Tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) structures based on ferromagnet/insulator/ferromagnet layer systems were prepared which showed a TMR ratio of up to 45% at room temperature.The second process developed in this work allows the fabrication of cpp contacts with lateral dimensions of 100 nm and less. Nanostencils are pre-patterned to define the geometry and dimension of the contacts which are prepared by depositing a multilayer onto the nanostencil. With samples prepared by this method it was possible to show switching of the electrodes of a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) nanocontact by spin torque transfer. Measurements were performed under different external magnetic fields. Current-induced excitation of the spin system in the contacts could be observed.

Seit der ersten Herstellung von Ferrofluiden Mitte der Sechziger Jahre wird auf experimenteller und theoretischer Ebene intensiv am Verständnis des Verhaltens der Ferrofluide gearbeitet. Der Untersuchung des wechselseitigen Einflusses der magnetischen und rheologischen Eigenschaften (Magnetoviskoser Effekt) der Ferrofluide gilt hierbei besonderes Interesse, stellt dieser Effekt doch die Grundlage für das einzigartige Verhalten der Ferrofluide dar. Über diesen Zusammenhang wurde 1969 erstmals von R. E. Rosensweig berichtet: Wird ein Ferrofluid von einem konstanten Magnetfeld durchsetzt, so steigt dessen Viskosität mit zunehmender Feldstärke. Schert man ein feldfreies Ferrofluid, so ist die Bewegung der Partikel mit der Vortizität der Strömung verknüpft, diese führt zu einer Rotation der Partikel. Wird nun ein konstantes Magnetfeld überlagert, so findet abhängig vom Winkel zwischen Feld und der Vortizität der Strömung eine Konkurrenz der auf die Partikel wirkenden magnetischen und viskosen Drehmomente statt. Das Drehmoment, welches versucht die Partikel in Feldrichtung zu orientieren, verlangsamt die Rotation im Fluid und stellt makroskopisch eine Viskositätserhöhung dar. Eine erste theoretische Beschreibung wurde 1972 von Shliomis formuliert und berücksichtigt neben den magnetischen und mechanischen Drehmomenten auch die Brownschen Bewegung der magnetischen Partikel im Fluid. Beschreiben die ersten Arbeiten Ferrofluide als Ensemble nicht wechselwirkender, monodisperser Partikel so zeigten Messungen an konzentrierten Fluiden die Notwendigkeit des Einbezugs von Polydispersität und der Wechselwirkungen zwischen den magnetischen Partikeln. Aufgrund der Polydispersität der Partikelgrößen finden sich in den Fluiden Partikel mit mehr als dem zweifachen des Durchschnittsvolumens. Trotz ihrer geringen Konzentration hat diese Fraktion entscheidenden Einfluss auf das magnetoviskose Verhalten des Fluides. Aufgrund der langen Reichweite und der starken Größenabhängigkeit der magnetisch dipolaren Wechselwirkung bilden diese Partikel dynamische, kettenförmige Agglomerate, welche auch ohne Anwesenheit eines externen Magnetfeldes vorliegen. Diese dynamischen Ketten mit großem Aspektverhältnis (Verhältnis Länge:Durchmesser) dominieren das magnetoviskose Verhalten der Fluide. Vergleichbar einem Paddel findet bei Rotation in einem angelegten Feld ein, gegenüber einer Kugel, stark erhöhter Kraftübertrag auf das Fluid statt. Der damit verbundene Magnetoviskose Effekt übertrifft denjenigen vergleichbarer sphärischer Partikel um 2-3 Größenordnungen. Diese enorme Steigerung ist jedoch beschränkt auf den Bereich sehr kleiner Scherraten, denn die Scherung der Flüssigkeit führt zu einem Zerbrechen der kettenförmigen Agglomerate. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Synthese stabiler magnetische Partikelketten mit feld- und scherratenunabhängigem Aspektverhältnis. Damit kann mittels kleiner Magnetfelder (ca. 10mT) eine variable Viskositätsänderung von mehreren Größenordnungen induziert werden. Dieser Effekt ist dann auch im technologisch interessanten Bereich großer Scherraten erreichbar. Erreicht wurde diese festen, stangenförmigen Partikel mittels einer Aerosolsynthese im Verlaufe derer elementares Eisen verdampft, und zu Nanopartikeln kondensiert wurde. Diese Partikel wurden im Aerosol zu stabilen Ketten versintert (Nanostäbe) und mit Hilfe einer Ölsäurehülle vor weiterer Agglomeration geschützt. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, neben der Etablierung der Präparation, insbesondere die magnetischen und magnetoviskosen Eigenschaften solcher Nanostab-Ferrofluide zu erforschen. Since the first preparation of ferrofluids in the mids of the 60s the understanding of their behavior is a matter of both theoretical and experimental research. Especially the interaction of rheological and magnetic properties (known as the magnetoviscous effect) is a main concern for being the source of the unique behavior of ferrofluids. First published in 1969 by R. E. Rosensweig this effect describes the rise of the viscosity of an ferrofluid situated in a homogeneous magnetic field. Shearing of an ferrofluid leads to the rotation of the magnetic particles because of the coupling between their movements and the vorticity of the fluid. Superposition of a magnetic field causes a rivalry between the magnetic and the viscous torques. The magnetic torque tries to align the particles magnetic momentum in the direction of the field thus hindering their free rotation with the field therefore causing a rise of the viscosity of the fluid. Shliomis found a first theoretical description by taking account of both torques as well as the Brownian movement of the magnetic particles amongst the molecules of the fluid. Starting by considering ferrofluids as ensembles of non-interacting, identical particles later works included the influence of interactions between the now polydisperse particles being distributed over a range of different sizes.Despite their small volume fraction particles more than twice as large as the mean particle size dominate the magnetoviscous behavior due to the formation of dynamical chainlike structures. Long-range dipolar forces create linear dynamic aggregates of these hardmagnetic particles even in zero field. Like a paddle their rotation in the direction of the outer field can transfer much bigger forces than equally sized spherical particles therefore causing a strongly enhanced magnetoviscous effect. Changes in the viscosity 2-3 decades larger than expected for spherical particles. But tragically, this effect is limited to the range of very small shear rates because by rising the shear rate the fragile chains vanish and also the strong magnetoviscous effect. The goal of this work is therefore the creation of stable rodlike magnetic particles their size being independent of field strength and shear rate. With them it would be possible to achieve this huge effect with small magnetic fields (some 10mT) and for technological relevant shear rates. We succeeded in creating this particles by an aerosol process during which iron is evaporated and condensed to small nanometer sized particles. Insitu sintering of chainlike aggregates led to stable rodlike particles (nanorods) which withstand further agglomeration after covering them with a layer of oleic acid. Beside the establishment of the preparation we focused on the on the magnetic and the magnetoviscous properties of these nanorod-ferrofluids.

The exchange bias anisotropy i.e. the shift of a hysteresis loop of a ferromagnet along the magnetic field axis occurs due to the exchange coupling of the ferromagnet to an antiferromagnet. Its microscopic origin is still under discussion. Available experimental data and the theoretical models for this effect are summarized. The experimentally employed methods of Brillouin light scattering, molecular beam epitaxy, and SQUID-magnetometry are presented. The influence of non-magnetic defects in the antiferromagnet ("Dilution of the antiferromagnet") on the exchange bias field is investigated in the systems Co/Co1-yO and Co/Co1-xMgxO. In both cases an increase of the exchange bias field of up to a factor of 3 is found. Monte-Carlo simulations from Dr. U. Nowak and Prof. Dr. K.D. Usadel (Univ.-Duisburg) qualitatively confirm the experimental results. These investigations result in a new model for exchange bias that is consistent with many of the experimental observations: Disorder in the antiferromagnet enables the formation of antiferromagnetic domains, which then cause a spin excess in the antiferromagnet at the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interface which causes exchange bias. Furthermore, the differences in the exchange bias field determined with Brillouin light scattering and magnetometry, the dependence of the ferromagnetic magnon mode width enhancement, and the role of the applied magnetic field during cooling of the exchange bias system below the Néel temperature is investigated.

This diploma thesis shows the influence of substrates on the physical properties of epitactically grown films on the basis of two examples:the high temperature modification gamma-Mn has been stabilized on Pt(111)at room temperature by means of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The structural examinations have been performed with RHEED and XRD. The fcc-unit cell is tetragonally distorted, due to the lattice mismatch. Magnetization measurements could not prove a theoretically predicted, ferromagnetic ordering for distorted Mn.The second example is the stabilization of magnetic CoPt_3 nanostructures on WSe_2. Below the coverage of one monolayer the adatoms form statistically distributed, hexagonal, facetted and single-cristalline islands. At deposition temperatures of 150°C or higher the islands are in addition chemically ordered. The magnetic properties of CoPt_3 films are of great interest for technical applications. The films consist of 10nm-sized clusters with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at deposition temperatures below 100°C. Both, the cluster size and the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, promise a drastical enhancement of the data storage density. Moreover, the production process of such storage material is extremely simple as only one production step is necessary with the deposition temperature being at room temperature.
