All-liquid molding can be used to transform a liquid into free-form solid constructs, while maintaining internal fluidity. Traditional biological scaffolds, such as cured pre-gels, are normally processed in solid state, sacrificing flowability and permeability. However, it is essential to maintain the fluidity of the scaffold to truly mimic the complexity and heterogeneity of natural human tissues. Here, this work molds an aqueous biomaterial ink into liquid building blocks with rigid shapes while preserving internal fluidity. The molded ink blocks for bone-like vertebrae and cartilaginous-intervertebral-disc shapes, are magnetically manipulated to assemble into hierarchical structures as a scaffold for subsequent spinal column tissue growth. It is also possible to join separate ink blocks by interfacial coalescence, different from bridging solid blocks by interfacial fixation. Generally, aqueous biomaterial inks are molded into shapes with high fidelity by the interfacial jamming of alginate surfactants. The molded liquid blocks can be reconfigured using induced magnetic dipoles, that dictated the magnetic assembly behavior of liquid blocks. The implanted spinal column tissue exhibits a biocompatibility based on in vitro seeding and in vivo cultivating results, showing potential physiological function such as bending of the spinal column.

Control and understanding of ensembles of skyrmions is important for realization of future technologies. In particular, the order-disorder transition associated with the 2D lattice of magnetic skyrmions can have significant implications for transport and other dynamic functionalities. To date, skyrmion ensembles have been primarily studied in bulk crystals, or as isolated skyrmions in thin film devices. Here, we investigate the condensation of the skyrmion phase at room temperature and zero field in a polar, van der Waals magnet. We demonstrate that we can engineer an ordered skyrmion crystal through structural confinement on the μm scale, showing control over this order-disorder transition on scales relevant for device applications.

BackgroundThe advent of culture-independent, next-generation DNA sequencing has led to the discovery of distinct lung bacterial communities. Studies of lung microbiome taxonomy often reveal only subtle differences between health and disease, but host recognition and response may distinguish the members of similar bacterial communities in different populations. Magnetic-activated cell sorting has been applied to the gut microbiome to identify the numbers and types of bacteria eliciting a humoral response. We adapted this technique to examine the populations of immunoglobulin-bound bacteria in the lung.MethodsSixty-four individuals underwent bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). We separated immunoglobulin G-bound bacteria using magnetic-activated cell sorting and sequenced the 16S rRNA gene on the Illumina MiSeq platform. We compared microbial sequencing data in IgG-bound bacterial communities compared to raw BAL then examined the differences in individuals with and without HIV as a representative disease state.ResultsImmunoglobulin G-bound bacteria were identified in all individuals. The community structure differed when compared to raw BAL, and there was a greater abundance of Pseudomonas and fewer oral bacteria in IgG-bound BAL. Examination of IgG-bound communities in individuals with HIV demonstrated the differences in Ig-bound bacteria by HIV status that were not seen in a comparison of raw BAL, and greater numbers of immunoglobulin-bound bacteria were associated with higher pulmonary cytokine levels.ConclusionsWe report a novel application of magnetic-activated cell sorting to identify immunoglobulin G-bound bacteria in the lung. This technique identified distinct bacterial communities which differed in composition from raw bronchoalveolar lavage, revealing the differences not detected by traditional analyses. Cytokine response was also associated with differential immunoglobulin binding of lung bacteria, suggesting the functional importance of these communities. Video Abstract.

Objective: The study aimed to determine the relationship between knee extension torque induced by repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation and the characteristics of the participants. Design: This was a basic study with noninvasive intervention. Knee extension torque induced by repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation–induced torque) and maximum voluntary contraction were measured. Stepwise method of multiple regression was performed to determine the factors affecting repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation–induced torque at 100% intensity and repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation–induced torque divided by maximum voluntary contraction (percent maximum voluntary contraction). Subcutaneous fat thickness, vastus lateralis muscle thickness measured by ultrasound, maximum voluntary contraction, and mean power frequency of electromyography during maximum voluntary contraction were selected as independent variables. Results: Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation was applied to the right vastus lateralis of 30 young healthy adults (average age, 21.1 ± 0.3 yrs). In the multiple regression analysis, repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation–induced torque (P < 0.001) was shown to be independently and significantly associated with maximum voluntary contraction (β = 0.510), subcutaneous fat thickness (β = −0.358), and vastus lateralis muscle thickness (β = 0.208), while percent maximum voluntary contraction value (P < 0.05) was independently and significantly associated with vastus lateralis muscle thickness (β = 1.059). Conclusions: Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation–induced torque decreases with thicker subcutaneous fat and increases with stronger maximum voluntary contraction or with thicker muscle. Magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials has recently emerged as one of the most promising areas in condensed matter research, with many exciting emerging properties and significant potential for applications ranging from topological magnonics to low-power spintronics, quantum computing, and optical communications. In the brief time after their discovery, 2D magnets have blossomed into a rich area for investigation, where fundamental concepts in magnetism are challenged by the behavior of spins that can develop at the single layer limit. However, much effort is still needed in multiple fronts before 2D magnets can be routinely used for practical implementations. In this comprehensive review, prominent authors with expertise in complementary fields of 2D magnetism (i.e., synthesis, device engineering, magneto-optics, imaging, transport, mechanics, spin excitations, and theory and simulations) have joined together to provide a genome of current knowledge and a guideline for future developments in 2D magnetic materials research.

PurposeTo develop a new technique that enables simultaneous quantification of whole-brain T1 , T2 , T2∗ , as well as susceptibility and synthesis of six contrast-weighted images in a single 9.1-minute scan.MethodsThe technique uses hybrid T2 -prepared inversion-recovery pulse modules and multi-echo gradient-echo readouts to collect k-space data with various T1, T2, and T2∗ weightings. The underlying image is represented as a six-dimensional low-rank tensor consisting of three spatial dimensions and three temporal dimensions corresponding to T1 recovery, T2 decay, and multi-echo behaviors, respectively. Multiparametric maps were fitted from reconstructed image series. The proposed method was validated on phantoms and healthy volunteers, by comparing quantitative measurements against corresponding reference methods. The feasibility of generating six contrast-weighted images was also examined.ResultsHigh quality, co-registered T1 , T2 , and T2∗ susceptibility maps were generated that closely resembled the reference maps. Phantom measurements showed substantial consistency (R2 > 0.98) with the reference measurements. Despite the significant differences of T1 (p < .001), T2 (p = .002), and T2∗ (p = 0.008) between our method and the references for in vivo studies, excellent agreement was achieved with all intraclass correlation coefficients greater than 0.75. No significant difference was found for susceptibility (p = .900). The framework is also capable of synthesizing six contrast-weighted images.ConclusionThe MR Multitasking-based 3D brain mapping of T1 , T2 , T2∗ , and susceptibility agrees well with the reference and is a promising technique for multicontrast and quantitative imaging.

Magnetotactic bacteria are a diverse group of microorganisms that use intracellular chains of ferrimagnetic nanocrystals, produced within magnetosome organelles, to align and navigate along the geomagnetic field. Several conserved genes for magnetosome formation have been described, but the mechanisms leading to distinct species-specific magnetosome chain configurations remain unclear. Here, we show that the fragmented nature of magnetosome chains in Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 is controlled by genes mcaA and mcaB. McaA recognizes the positive curvature of the inner cell membrane, while McaB localizes to magnetosomes. Along with the MamK actin-like cytoskeleton, McaA and McaB create space for addition of new magnetosomes in between pre-existing magnetosomes. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that McaA and McaB homologs are widespread among magnetotactic bacteria and may represent an ancient strategy for magnetosome positioning.

Trace amounts of Cu (II), Pb (II), and Cd (II) in a wastewater sample were preconcentrated with a novel cross-linked magnetic chitosan modified with a new synthesised methionine-glutaraldehyde Schiff's base (MG-Chi/Fe3 O4 ) as a dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) adsorbent. The adsorbed metal ions were then eluted with a specific volume of suitable solution and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the metal ions were investigated and optimised, including pH, amount of adsorbent, extraction time, type and volume rate of eluent, elution time, sample volume, and effect of interfering ions. The adsorption kinetics are more consistent with the pseudo-second order model. The results were statistically interpreted and the analytical performance of the proposed method was found to have preconcentration factors of 55, 60, and 50 μg L-1 for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively, limits of detection were 0.22, 0.24, and 0.10 μg L-1 for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively, with a relative standard deviation (1.5%-2.8 %), and the liner range was 5-1000 for Cu(II) and Pb(II) and 2.5-1000 for Cd(II). It was concluded that this method was suitable for successful simultaneous determination of Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) in industrial wastewater samples.

There is growing global interest in the bioremediation of cadmium (Cd) using combinations of biochar and microorganisms. However, the interactions among biochar, introduced and indigenous microorganisms remain unclear. Accordingly, a 90 day microcosm experiment was conducted to investigate this by adding Bacillus sp. K1 strain inoculated rice straw biochar (SBB) and magnetic straw biochar (MBB) into a Cd contaminated paddy soil from Hunan, China. All treatments were incubated aerobically (60% water holding capacity) or anaerobically for 90 d. During both soil incubations, Bacillus sp. K1 successfully colonized in soil with composites applications. Soil pH was significantly increased from acid to neutral, and available Cd decreased with the addition of both composites. The better remediation efficiency of MBB than SBB under anerobic conditions was attributed to the transformation of acetic acid-extractable Cd into the residual fraction, caused by Cd2+ bonding with crystal Fe3O4. The application of the two kinds of composites caused similar changes to both microbial communities. There was a slight decrease in indigenous microbial alpha diversity with the MBB aerobic application, while the total population number of bacteria was increased by 700%. Both the redundancy analysis and Mantel analyses indicated that pH and microbial biomass C contributed to the colonization of Bacillus sp. K1 with SBB under aerobic conditions, and with MBB under anerobic conditions, respectively. The research provides a new insight into interactive effects and investigates immobilization mechanisms involved of bacterial/biochar composites in anaerobic and aerobic soils.

Magnetic ratcheting cytometry is a promising approach to separate magnetically-labeled cells and magnetic particles based on the quantity of magnetic material. We have previously reported on the ability of this technique to separate magnetically-labeled cells. Here, with a new chip design, containing high aspect ratio permalloy micropillar arrays, we demonstrate the ability of this technique to rapidly concentrate and collect superparamagnetic iron oxide particles. The platform consists of a mechatronic wheel used to generate and control a cycling external magnetic field that impinges on a "ratcheting chip." The ratcheting chip is created by electroplating a 2D array of high aspect ratio permalloy micropillars onto a glass slide, which is embedded in a thin polymer layer to create a planar surface above the micropillars. By varying magnetic field frequency and direction through wheel rotation rate and angle, we direct particle movement on chip. We explore the operating conditions for this system, identifying the effects of varying ratcheting frequency, along with time, on the dynamics and resulting concentration of these magnetic particles. We also demonstrate the ability of the system to rapidly direct the movement of superparamagnetic iron oxide particles of varying sizes. Using this technique, 2.8 μm, 500 nm, and 100 nm diameter superparamagnetic iron oxide particles, suspended within an aqueous fluid, were concentrated. We further define the ability of the system to concentrate 2.8 μm superparamagnetic iron oxide particles, present in a liquid suspension, into a small chip surface area footprint, achieving a 100-fold surface area concentration, and achieving a concentration factor greater than 200%. The achieved concentration factor of greater than 200% could be greatly increased by reducing the amount of liquid extracted at the chip outlet, which would increase the ability of achieving highly sensitive downstream analytical techniques. Magnetic ratcheting-based enrichment may be useful in isolating and concentrating subsets of magnetically-labeled cells for diagnostic automation.

Carbohydrate-protein conjugates have diverse applications. They have been used clinically as vaccines against bacterial infection and have been developed for high-throughput assays to elucidate the ligand specificities of glycan-binding proteins (GBPs) and antibodies. Here, we report an effective process that combines highly efficient chemoenzymatic synthesis of carbohydrates, production of carbohydrate-bovine serum albumin (glycan-BSA) conjugates using a squarate linker, and convenient immobilization of the resulting neoglycoproteins on carboxylate-coated fluorescent magnetic beads for the development of a suspension multiplex array platform. A glycan-BSA-bead array containing BSA and 50 glycan-BSA conjugates with tuned glycan valency was generated. The binding profiles of six plant lectins with binding preference towards Gal and/or GalNAc, as well as human galectin-3 and galectin-8, were readily obtained. Our results provide useful information to understand the multivalent glycan-binding properties of human galectins. The neoglycoprotein-immobilized fluorescent magnetic bead suspension multiplex array is a robust and flexible platform for rapid analysis of glycan and GBP interactions and will find broad applications.

Deep proteome coverage in bottom-up proteomics requires peptide-level fractionation to simplify the complex peptide mixture before analysis by tandem mass spectrometry. By decreasing the number of coeluting precursor peptide ions, fractionation effectively reduces the complexity of the sample leading to higher sample coverage and reduced bias toward high-abundance precursors that are preferentially identified in data-dependent acquisition strategies. To achieve this goal, we report a bead-based off-line peptide fractionation method termed CIF or carboxylate-modified magnetic bead-based isopropanol gradient peptide fractionation. CIF is an extension of the SP3 (single-pot solid phase-enhanced sample preparation) strategy and provides an effective but complementary approach to other commonly used fractionation methods including strong cation exchange and reversed phase-based chromatography. We demonstrate that CIF is an effective offline separation strategy capable of increasing the depth of peptide analyte coverage both when used alone or as a second dimension of peptide fractionation in conjunction with high pH reversed phase. These features make it ideally suited for a wide range of proteomic applications including the affinity purification of low-abundance bait proteins.

Herein, sulfur vacancies in magnetic greigite (SVs-Fe3S4) nanosheets were synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method by adjusting the ethylene glycol: water ratio. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that SV-rich Fe3S4 and SV-poor Fe3S4 were acquired using 100% ethylene glycol and 100% water as solvent, respectively. A peroxidase-like activity assay demonstrated that maximum reaction rates for H2O2-mediated oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-benzidine (TMB) catalyzed by the SV-rich Fe3S4 was 2.3 times higher than SV-poor Fe3S4. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and reactive oxygen species (ROS) detection confirmed that the enhanced peroxidase-like activity by SV-rich Fe3S4 was attributed to efficient adsorption of H2O2 and subsequent decomposition to hydroxyl radicals (•OH) on the SVs sites of Fe3S4. The SV-rich Fe3S4 nanozyme was employed to develop a simple, highly sensitive and selective assay for glucose detection with a linear range of 0.5-150 μM and a detection limit of 0.1 μM (S/N = 3). A smartphone application (App) was designed and applied to efficiently detect serum glucose with the integrated analytical system based on the SV-rich Fe3S4. These new findings highlight the important role of surface defects in nanozymes on generating peroxidase-like activity for glucose detection in point-of-care diagnosis.

Co-deletion of 1p/19q is a hallmark of oligodendroglioma and predicts better survival. However, little is understood about its metabolic characteristics. In this study, we aimed to explore the extracellular acidity of WHO grade II and III gliomas associated with 1p/19q co-deletion. We included 76 glioma patients who received amine chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) imaging at 3 T. Magnetic transfer ratio asymmetry (MTRasym) at 3.0 ppm was used as the pH-sensitive CEST biomarker, with higher MTRasym indicating lower pH. To control for the confounder factors, T2 relaxometry and L-6-18F-fluoro-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalnine (18F-FDOPA) PET data were collected in a subset of patients. We found a significantly lower MTRasym in 1p/19q co-deleted gliomas (co-deleted, 1.17% ± 0.32%; non-co-deleted, 1.72% ± 0.41%, P = 1.13 × 10-7), while FDOPA (P = 0.92) and T2 (P = 0.61) were not significantly affected. Receiver operating characteristic analysis confirmed that MTRasym could discriminate co-deletion status with an area under the curve of 0.85. In analysis of covariance, 1p/19q co-deletion status was the only significant contributor to the variability in MTRasym when controlling for age and FDOPA (P = 2.91 × 10-3) or T2 (P = 8.03 × 10-6). In conclusion, 1p/19q co-deleted gliomas were less acidic, which may be related to better prognosis. Amine CEST-MRI may serve as a non-invasive biomarker for identifying 1p/19q co-deletion status.

The active site of the nitrogen-fixing enzyme Mo-nitrogenase is the M cluster ([MoFe7 S9 C⋅R-homocitrate]), also known as the FeMo cofactor or FeMoco. The biosynthesis of this highly complex metallocluster involves a series of proteins. Among them, NifB, a radical-SAM enzyme, is instrumental in the assembly of the L cluster ([Fe8 S9 C]), a precursor and all-iron core of the M cluster. In the absence of sulfite, NifB assembles a precursor form of the L cluster called the L* cluster ([Fe8 S8 C]), which lacks the final ninth sulfur. EPR and MCD spectroscopies are used to probe the electronic structures of the paramagnetic, oxidized forms of both the L and L* clusters, labeled LOx and [L*]Ox . This study shows that both LOx and [L*]Ox have nearly identical EPR and MCD spectra, thus suggesting that the two clusters have identical structures upon oxidation; in other words, a sulfur migrates away from LOx following oxidation, thereby rendering the cluster identical to [L*]Ox . It is proposed that a similar migration could occur to the M cluster upon oxidation, and that this is an instrumental part of both M cluster formation and nitrogenase substrate/inhibitor binding.

This study synthesized magnetic greigite/biochar composites (MGBs) by a solvothermal method and tested their ability to remove Cr(VI) from heavy metal-polluted wastewater. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that magnetic greigite (Fe3S4) flakes were aggregated and anchored to the biochar surface, resulting in more active sites than pristine biochar. Maximum Cr removal efficiency and capacity of MGB-30 (greigite/biochar = 30%) at an initial Cr(VI) concentration of 20 mg/L were 93% and 23.25 mg/g, respectively. A pseudo-first-order kinetic model was determined for the Cr(VI) removal process and the Cr(VI) removal rate constants were highly dependent on the mass ratios of Fe3S4 loaded on biochar, initial MGB and Cr(VI) concentrations and solution pH. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and flame atomic absorption spectrometric (FAAS) analysis demonstrated that Cr(VI) was preferentially adsorbed on MGBs and subsequently reduced to Cr(III) by MGBs. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and iron redox transformations revealed that the Cr(VI) removal enhancement was attributed to efficient surface Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling via electron transfer with the persistent free radicals (PFRs) of biochar. These novel findings provide new insights into the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle induced by biochar and the prospects of using magnetic greigite/biochar composites for remediation of Cr(VI)-rich wastewaters.

Proteases are enzymes that cleave proteins and are crucial to physiological processes such as digestion, blood clotting, and wound healing. Unregulated protease activity is a biomarker of several human diseases. Synthetic peptides that are selectively hydrolyzed by a protease of interest can be used as reporter substrates of unregulated protease activity. We developed an activity-based protease sensor by immobilizing magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to the surface of a giant magnetoresistive spin-valve (GMR SV) sensor using peptides. Cleavage of these peptides by a protease releases the magnetic nanoparticles resulting in a time-dependent change in the local magnetic field. Using this approach, we detected a significant release of MNPs after 3.5 minutes incubation using just 4 nM of the cysteine protease, papain. In addition, we show that proteases in healthy human urine do not release the MNPs, however addition of 20 nM of papain to the urine samples resulted in a time-dependent change in magnetoresistance. This study lays the foundation for using GMR SV sensors as a platform for real-time, quantitative detection of protease activity in biological fluids.

Human perivascular stem/stromal cells (PSC) are a multipotent mesenchymal progenitor cell population defined by their perivascular residence. PSC are increasingly studied for their application in skeletal regenerative medicine. PSC from subcutaneous white adipose tissue are most commonly isolated via fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), and defined as a bipartite population of CD146+CD34-CD31-CD45- pericytes and CD34+CD146-CD31-CD45- adventitial cells. FACS poses several challenges for clinical translation, including requirements for facilities, equipment, and personnel. The purpose of this study is to identify if magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) is a feasible method to derive PSC, and to determine if MACS-derived PSC are comparable to our previous experience with FACS-derived PSC. In brief, CD146+ pericytes and CD34+ adventitial cells were enriched from human lipoaspirate using a multistep column approach. Next, cell identity and purity were analyzed by flow cytometry. In vitro multilineage differentiation studies were performed with MACS-defined PSC subsets. Finally, in vivo application was performed in nonhealing calvarial bone defects in Scid mice. Results showed that human CD146+ pericytes and CD34+ adventitial cells may be enriched by MACS, with defined purity, anticipated cell surface marker expression, and capacity for multilineage differentiation. In vivo, MACS-derived PSC induce ossification of bone defects. These data document the feasibility of a MACS approach for the enrichment and application of PSC in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Impact Statement Our findings suggest that perivascular stem/stromal cells, and in particular adventitial cells, may be isolated by magnetic-activated cell sorting and applied as an uncultured autologous stem cell therapy in a same-day setting for bone defect repair.

Magnetic susceptibility can be assessed by quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), based on measured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) phase data. The QSM reconstruction process is, however, mathematically challenging and still not fully robust. A signal-generating holmium [Ho(III)] aqueous solution with air-equivalent magnetic susceptibility was prepared, and used as a surrounding medium in a water phantom with tubes filled with a solution of gadolinium contrast agent at various concentrations. Extended analyses under controlled conditions were accomplished by simulations of the phantom construction. Without surrounding holmium solution, a gadolinium tube positioned centrally, parallel with B0, showed a susceptibility difference that agreed well with theoretical values, whereas a peripheral parallel tube position showed larger deviation. Orientation perpendicular to B0 resulted in less variation between the internal tube positions. Air-equivalent magnetic susceptibility corresponded to 16.5 mM Ho(III) solution. With surrounding holmium solution, several post-processing steps became challenging. Simulations indicated higher degree of underestimation when the theoretical susceptibility difference increased. Details in the mathematical implementation, for example, background field removal can strongly influence the result. Simulated results were, in part, unexpected, and provided awareness of limitations in the reconstruction technique, mainly related to conditions with large susceptibility differences between compartments.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are delivery vehicles that can carry cargo molecules and release them on command. The particles used in the applications reported in this Account are around 100 nm in diameter (about the size of a virus) and contain 2.5 nm tubular pores with a total volume of about 1 cm3/g. For the biomedical applications discussed here, the cargo is trapped in the pores until the particles are stimulated to release it. The challenges are to get the particles to the site of a disease and then to deliver the cargo on command. We describe methods to do both, and we illustrate the applicability of the particles to cure cancer and intracellular infectious disease. Our first steps were to design multifunctional nanoparticles with properties that allow them to carry and deliver hydrophobic drugs. Many important pharmaceuticals are hydrophobic and cannot reach the diseased sites by themselves. We describe how we modified MSNs to make them dispersible, imagable, and targetable and discuss in vitro studies. We then present examples of surface modifications that allow them to deliver large molecules such as siRNA. In vivo studies of siRNA delivery to treat triple-negative breast and ovarian cancers are presented. The next steps are to attach nanomachines and other types of caps that trap drug molecules but release them when stimulated. We describe nanomachines that respond autonomously (without human intervention) to stimuli specific to disease sites. A versatile type of machine is a nanovalve that is closed at neutral (blood) pH but opens upon acidification that occurs in endolysosomes of cancer cells. Another type of machine, a snap-top cap, is stimulated by reducing agents such as glutathione in the cytosol of cells. Both of these platforms were studied in vitro to deliver antibiotics to infected macrophages and in vivo to cure and kill the intracellular bacteria M. tuberculosis and F. tularensis. The latter is a tier 1 select agent of bioterrorism. Finally, we describe nanomachines for drug delivery that are controlled by externally administered light and magnetic fields. A futuristic dream for nanotherapy is the ability to control a nano-object everywhere in the body. Magnetic fields penetrate completely and have spatial selectivity governed by the size of the field-producing coil. We describe how to control nanovalves with alternating magnetic fields (AMFs) and superparamagnetic cores inside the MSNs. The AMF heats the cores, and temperature-sensitive caps release the cargo. In vitro studies demonstrate dose control of the therapeutic to cause apoptosis without overheating the cells. Nanocarriers have great promise for therapeutic applications, and MSNs that can carry drugs to the site of a disease to produce a high local concentration without premature release and off-target damage may have the capability of realizing this goal.

The engineering of materials with controlled magnetic properties by means other than a magnetic field is of great interest in nanotechnology. In this study, we report engineered magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) in the nanocomposite form of iron oxide nanoparticles (IO)-graphene oxide (GO) with tunable core magnetism and magnetic resonance transverse relaxivity (r2). These tunable properties are obtained by varying the IO content on GO. The MGO series exhibits r2 values analogous to those observed in conventional single core and cluster forms of IO in different size regimes-motional averaging regime (MAR), static dephasing regime (SDR), and echo-limiting regime (ELR) or slow motion regime (SMR). The maximum r2 of 162 ± 5.703 mM-1s-1 is attained for MGO with 28 weight percent (wt%) content of IO on GO and hydrodynamic diameter of 414 nm, which is associated with the SDR. These findings demonstrate the clear potential of magnetic graphene oxide for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications.

Despite extensive biochemical, spectroscopic, and computational studies, the mechanism of biological water oxidation by the oxygen evolving complex (OEC) of Photosystem II remains a subject of significant debate. Mechanistic proposals are guided by the characterization of reaction intermediates such as the S2 state, which features two characteristic EPR signals at g = 2 and g = 4.1. Two nearly isoenergetic structural isomers have been proposed as the source of these distinct signals, but relevant structure-electronic structure studies remain rare. Herein, we report the synthesis, crystal structure, electrochemistry, XAS, magnetic susceptibility, variable temperature CW-EPR, and pulse EPR data for a series of [MnIIIMn3IVO4] cuboidal complexes as spectroscopic models of the S2 state of the OEC. Resembling the oxidation state and EPR spectra of the S2 state of the OEC, these model complexes show two EPR signals, a broad low field signal and a multiline signal, that are remarkably similar to the biological system. The effect of systematic changes in the nature of the bridging ligands on spectroscopy were studied. Results show that the electronic structure of tetranuclear Mn complexes is highly sensitive to even small geometric changes and the nature of the bridging ligands. Our model studies suggest that the spectroscopic properties of the OEC may also react very sensitively to small changes in structure; the effect of protonation state and other reorganization processes need to be carefully assessed.

Magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) have been widely studied for their potential applications in medicine, diagnosis, cell biology, analytical chemistry, and environmental technology. Introduction of MCNTs paved the way for the emergence of new approaches in nanobiotechnology and biomedicine as a result of their multifarious properties embedded within either the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or magnetic parts. Numerous preparation techniques exists for functionalizing CNTs with magnetic nanoparticles, and these versatile strategies lay the ground for the generation of novel and versatile systems which are applicable to many industries and biological areas. Here, we review and discuss the recent papers dealing with MCNTs and their application in biomedical and industrial fields.

T-cell-based immunotherapies represent a growing medical paradigm that has the potential to revolutionize contemporary cancer treatments. However, manufacturing bottlenecks related to the enrichment of therapeutically optimal T-cell subpopulations from leukopak samples impede scale-up and scale-out efforts. This is mainly attributed to the challenges that current cell purification platforms face in balancing the quantitative sorting capacity needed to isolate specific T-cell subsets with the scalability to meet manufacturing throughputs. In this work, we report a continuous-flow, quantitative cell enrichment platform based on a technique known as ratcheting cytometry that can perform complex, multicomponent purification targeting various subpopulations of magnetically labeled T cells directly from apheresis or peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples. The integrated ratcheting cytometry instrument and cartridge demonstrated enrichment of T cells directly from concentrated apheresis samples with a 97% purity and an 85% recovery of magnetically tagged cells. Magnetic sorting of different T-cell subpopulations was also accomplished on chip by multiplexing cell surface targets onto particles with differing magnetic strengths. We believe that ratcheting cytometry's quantitative capacity and throughput scalability represents an excellent technology candidate to alleviate cell therapy manufacturing bottlenecks.

DNA charge transport chemistry involves the migration of charge over long molecular distances through the aromatic base pair stack within the DNA helix. This migration depends upon the intimate coupling of bases stacked one with another, and hence any perturbation in that stacking, through base modifications or protein binding, can be sensed electrically. In this review, we describe the many ways DNA charge transport chemistry has been utilized to sense changes in DNA, including the presence of lesions, mismatches, DNA-binding proteins, protein activity, and even reactions under weak magnetic fields. Charge transport chemistry is remarkable in its ability to sense the integrity of DNA.

Increasing the operating temperatures of single-molecule magnets-molecules that can retain magnetic polarization in the absence of an applied field-has potential implications toward information storage and computing, and may also inform the development of new bulk magnets. Progress toward these goals relies upon the development of synthetic chemistry enabling enhancement of the thermal barrier to reversal of the magnetic moment, while suppressing alternative relaxation processes. Herein, we show that pairing the axial magnetic anisotropy enforced by tetramethylcyclopentadienyl (CpMe4H) capping ligands with strong magnetic exchange coupling provided by an N23- radical bridging ligand results in a series of dilanthanide complexes exhibiting exceptionally large magnetic hysteresis loops that persist to high temperatures. Significantly, reducing the coordination number of the metal centers appears to increase axial magnetic anisotropy, giving rise to larger magnetic relaxation barriers and 100-s magnetic blocking temperatures of up to 20 K, as observed for the complex [K(crypt-222)][(CpMe4H2Tb)2(μ-[Formula: see text])].

ObjectiveIn biomagnetic signal processing, the theory of the signal subspace has been applied to removing interfering magnetic fields, and a representative algorithm is the signal space projection algorithm, in which the signal/interference subspace is defined in the spatial domain as the span of signal/interference-source lead field vectors. This paper extends the notion of this conventional (spatial domain) signal subspace by introducing a new definition of signal subspace in the time domain.ApproachIt defines the time-domain signal subspace as the span of row vectors that contain the source time course values. This definition leads to symmetric relationships between the time-domain and the conventional (spatial-domain) signal subspaces. As a review, this article shows that the notion of the time-domain signal subspace provides useful insights over existing interference removal methods from a unified perspective. Main results and significance. Using the time-domain signal subspace, it is possible to interpret a number of interference removal methods as the time domain signal space projection. Such methods include adaptive noise canceling, sensor noise suppression, the common temporal subspace projection, the spatio-temporal signal space separation, and the recently-proposed dual signal subspace projection. Our analysis using the notion of the time domain signal space projection reveals implicit assumptions these methods rely on, and shows that the difference between these methods results only from the manner of deriving the interference subspace. Numerical examples that illustrate the results of our arguments are provided.

Immunoassays based on reactions between target pathogen (antigen; Ag) and antibody (Ab) are frequently used for Ag detection. An external magnetic field was used to immobilize magnetic microbeads-tagged-antibodies (mMB-Ab) on the surface of a microchannel in the capture zone. The mMB-Ab was subsequently used for Ag detection. The objective of this numerical study, with experimental validation, is to assess the surface reaction between mMB-Ab and Ag in the presence of electro-osmotic flow (EOF). First, immobilization of mMB-Ab complex in the wall of the capture zone was achieved. Subsequently, the Ag was transported by EOF toward the capture zone to bind with the immobilized mMB-Ab. Lastly, mMB-Ab:Ag complex was formed and immobilized in the capture zone. A finite volume solver was used to implement the above steps. The surface reaction between the mMB-Ab and Ag was investigated in the presence of electric fields (E): 150 V/cm-450 V/cm and Ag concentrations: 0.001 M-1000 M. The depletion of mMB-Ab increases with time as the E decreases. Furthermore, as the concentration of Ag decreases, the depletion of mMB-Ab increases with time. These results quantify the detection of Ag using the EOF device; thus, signifying its potential for rapid throughput screening of Ag. Due to the presence of unpaired electron orbitals in most lanthanide ions, lanthanide-doped nanoparticles (LnNPs) exhibit paramagnetism. However, as to biosensing applications, the magnetism of LnNPs is so weak that can hardly be employed in target separation. Herein, it is discovered that the magnetism of the LnNPs is highly associated with their concentration in a confined space, enabling aggregation-augmented magnetism to make them susceptive to a conventional magnet. Accordingly, a magnetic levitation (Maglev) sensing system is designed, in which the target exosomes can specifically introduce paramagnetic LnNPs to the microbeads' surface, allowing aggregation-augmented magnetism and further leverage the microbeads' levitation height in the Maglev device to indicate the target exosomes' content. It is demonstrated that this Maglev system can precisely distinguish healthy people's blood samples from those of breast cancer patients. This is the first work to report that LnNPs hold great promise in magnetic separation-based biological sample sorting, and the LnNP-permitted Maglev sensing system is proven to be promising for establishing a new generation of biosensing devices., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Magnetic covalent organic frameworks are new emerging materials which, besides many other applications, have found unique applications in analytical chemistry as separating media and adsorbents. They have outstanding features such as special morphology, chemical and thermal stability, high adsorption capacity, good magnetic response, high specific surface area, uniform pore size distribution, strong π-π interactions with analytes and high reusability that makes reported studies on their properties and applications increased in the recent years. After discussing the methods of synthesis of MCOFs with different geometries that cause their special physic-chemical properties, this review focuses on their high potential which has been exhibited in various applications in extraction and pre-concentration of different analytes such as organic compounds, heavy metal ions and biological samples. The article also highlights the applications of magnetic covalent organic frameworks in other chemical analysis such as adsorbent and being used in sensors.

As a typical kind of new pollutants, there are still some challenges in the rapid detection of antibiotics. In this work, a sensitive fluorescent probe based on boron-doped carbon dots (B-CDs) in combination with thermo-responsive magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (T-MMIPs) was constructed for the detection of oxytetracycline (OTC) in tea drinks. T-MMIPs were designed, fabricated and employed to enrich OTC at trace level from tea drinks, and B-CDs were utilized as the fluorescent probe to detect the concentration of OTC. The proposed method exhibited good linear relationship with OTC concentration from 0.2 to 60 μg L -1 and the limit of detection was 0.1 μg L -1 . The established method has been successfully validated with tea beverages. To address the challenges of low recovery, prolonged extraction times, and environmental pollution caused by toxic solvents in traditional extraction methods, magnetic bead-enhanced deep eutectic solvent mechanochemical extraction was developed for extracting natural products from orange peels. The extraction efficiencies of deep eutectic solvents were experimentally evaluated, and theoretical methods were used to guide solvent selection. Choline chloride-ethylene glycol demonstrated the highest efficiency under the optimal extraction conditions: a molar ratio of 1:2, no water content, a solid-liquid ratio of 0.08 g/mL, and an extraction time of 60 s. The synergy between the deep eutectic solvent and magnetic bead-enhanced the mechanochemical extraction efficiencies. The study also examined the effects of different magnetic bead types and orange peel powder particle sizes on extraction efficiency, finding that a 0.11 mm particle size combined with CIP@SiO 2 yielded the best results. This study presents a dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) approach for extracting and determining of two organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), including diazinon and chlorpyrifos as model analytes in various samples. For this purpose, we synthesized, characterized, and utilized magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes coated with poly 8-hydroxyquinoline (MWCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 @PHQ) as a novel sorbent. The impact of various parameters, including sorbent type, sample pH, sample volume, sorbent amount, desorption solvent (type and volume), extraction time, and ionic strength on the extraction efficiency was investigated and optimized. Following the extraction, the desorbed pesticides in acetone were analyzed using gas chromatography with an FID detector. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the proposed method showed excellent linearity in the range of 3-1000 µg/L, low detection limit (0.9-1.5 µg/L), good relative recoveries (86-101.5 %), and high precision (RSD < 6.5 %). The oxidation of tetraselenatetracene (TSeT) by tetracyanoquinodimethane in the presence of dysprosium(III) tris(hexafluoroacetylacetonate), Dy III (hfac) 3 , produces black crystals of {TSeT 1.5 } ●+ [Dy III (hfac) 4 ] - ( 1 ) salt, which combines conducting and magnetic sublattices. It contains one-dimensional stacks composed of partially oxidized TSeT molecules (formal averaged charge is +2/3). Dimers and monomers can be outlined within these stacks with charge and spin density redistribution. The spin triplet state of the dimers is populated above 128 K with an estimated singlet-triplet energy gap of 542 K, whereas spins localized on the monomers show paramagnetic behavior. A semiconducting behavior is observed for 1 with the activation energy of 91 meV (measured by the four-probe technique for an oriented single crystal). The Dy III ions coordinate four hfac - anions in [Dy III (hfac) 4 ] - , providing D 2d symmetry. Slow magnetic relaxation is observed for Dy III under an applied static magnetic field of 1000 Oe, and 1 is a single-ion magnet (SIM) with spin reversal barrier U eff = 40.2 K and magnetic hysteresis at 2 K. Contributions from Dy III and TSeT ●+ paramagnetic species are seen in EPR. The Dy III ion rarely manifests EPR signals, but such signal is observed in 1 . It appears due to narrowing below 30 K and has g 4 = 6.1871 and g 5 = 2.1778 at 5.4 K.

The development of liquid biopsy methods for the accurate and reliable detection of miRNAs in whole blood is critical for the early diagnosis and monitoring of diseases. However, accurate quantification of miRNA expression levels remains challenging due to the complex matrix and low abundance of miRNAs in blood samples. Herein, we report a contactless signal output strategy with low background interference that ensures "zero-contact" between the reaction system and the colorimetry system. The designed target-induced magnetic ZnS/ZIF-90/ZnS network can serve as a unique signal amplifier and transducer. It releases hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas in an acidic solution which can be concentrated in a droplet of only a few microliters in volume, etching the silver layer of Au@Ag nanostars (NSTs) in the droplet. This will lead to changes in the localized surface plasmon resonance signals of the NSTs. Finally, quantitative detection of let-7a is realized by measuring the offset value of the UV-vis absorption peak. Therefore, by virtue of the synergistic action of quadruple signal amplification methods, including catalytic hairpin assembly, ZnS/ZIF-90/ZnS, magnetic separation, and microextraction, the "All-in-Tube" ultrasensitive detection of low-abundance let-7a in whole blood is achieved with a detection limit as low as the aM level. In addition, the "zero-contact" signal output mode effectively solves the problem of complex matrix interference, demonstrating the great potential of this method for miRNA quantification in complex samples, such as whole blood.

A series of ZnCr 2- x Ho x Se 4 microcrystalline spinels (where x = 0.05, 0.075, and 0.10) containing holmium ions in octahedral coordination were obtained by sintering of adequate reactants at high temperatures. The obtained doped materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, UV-Vis-NIR, molecular field approximation, and XPS spectroscopies. Their thermal properties were also investigated. The doping of the ZnCr 2 S 4 matrix with paramagnetic Ho 3+ ions with a content of not more than 0.1 and a screened 4 f shell revealed a significant effect of orbital and Landau diamagnetism, a strong reduction in short-range ferromagnetic interactions, and a broadening and shift of the peak of the first critical field by simultaneous stabilization of the sharp peak in the second critical field. These results correlate well with FPLO calculations, which show that Cr sites have magnetic moments of 3.19 µ B and Ho sites have significantly larger ones with a value of 3.95 µ B . Zn has a negligible magnetic polarization of 0.02 µ B , and Se induces a polarization of approximately -0.12 µ B .

Selenium (Se(VI)) is environmentally toxic. One of the most popular reducing agents for Se(VI) remediation is zero-valent iron (ZVI). However, most ZVI studies were carried out in water matrices, and the recovery of reduced Se has not been investigated. A water-sediment system constructed using natural sediment was employed here to study in-situ Se remediation and recovery. A combined effect of ZVI and unacclimated microorganisms from natural sediment was found in Se(VI) removal in the water phase with a removal efficiency of 92.7 ± 1.1% within 7 d when 10 mg L -1 Se(VI) was present. Soluble Se(VI) was removed from the water and precipitated to the sediment phase (74.8 ± 0.1%), which was enhanced by the addition of ZVI (83.3 ± 0.3%). The recovery proportion of the immobilized Se was 34.2 ± 0.1% and 92.5 ± 0.2% through wet and dry magnetic separation with 1 g L -1 ZVI added, respectively. The 16 s rRNA sequencing revealed the variations in the microbial communities in response to ZVI and Se, which the magnetic separation could potentially mitigate in the long term. The unreasonable use of organophosphorus pesticides leads to excessive pesticide residues in food, seriously threatening public health, and the potential of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology, incorporating a metal-organic framework, is substantial for the rapid detection of trace pesticide residues. Here, a novel Fe 3 O 4 @NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)@Ag (FNMA) SERS nanosensor was developed. Results indicated that the FNMA had a high enhancement factor of 1.53 × 10 8 , a low limit of detection (LOD) of 4.55 × 10 -12 M, and a relative standard deviation of 7.73 % for 4-nitrothiophenol, demonstrating its good SERS sensitivity and uniformity, and also possessed good storage stability for one month. In this paper, a novel magnetic hyper-crosslinked polymer with amino and triazine bifunctional groups (M-NH 2 -THCP) was developed. M-NH 2 -THCP has strong nitroimidazoles (NDZs) enrichment effect, and therefore it was used as an adsorbent to extract five NDZs from lake water, catfish and shrimp meat prior to HPLC. Polar interaction, π-π stacking interaction, hydrogen bond and Lewis acid-base interaction were attested to be the major adsorption mechanism. The method has a good linearity in the range of 0.1-100 ng mL -1 for lake water, 10-400 ng g -1 for catfish and shrimp muscle with R 2  > 0.9964. The limits of detection of NDZs were 0.03-0.04 ng mL -1 for lake water, 1.0-2.0 ng g -1 for catfish and 2.0-2.5 ng g -1 for shrimp, which is superior to most reported method. The method recoveries were 87.6-119 %, and relative standard deviations were less than 8.7 %. Magnetic iron concentrate (MIC) and nonmagnetic tailings (NT) are obtained from magnetization roasting of iron tailings (IT). MIC containing Pb adversely affects blast furnace ironmaking, while Cu in NT poses leaching risks. This study utilizes fast pyrolysis-suspension magnetization roasting to recover iron from IT. The enrichment of Pb, Cu, and the phase transformation mechanism of Cu in the process of suspension magnetization roasting and magnetic separation were clarified. Results show 96.13 % of Cu in IT is in limonite and 47.23 % of Pb is associated with iron. At 750 °C, with 10 % dosage of biomass pyrolysis and 10 min roasting, Pb, Cu and Fe contents in MIC are 0.96, 2.14 and 3.17 times that of NT. Increasing roasting temperature enhances Cu associated with iron enrichment into the MIC, while oxidation of free copper oxide associated with iron forms magnetic copper ferrite. Increased pyrolyzed biomass leads to over-reduction of magnetite associated with Cu to FeO associated with Cu, promoting magnetic copper ferrite decomposition into FeO and free copper oxide. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and zearalenone (ZEN) are two mycotoxins that often co-occur in corn. A surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based lateral flow immunoassay (SERS-LFIA) that can simultaneously detect AFB1 and ZEN in corn samples was developed employing the core-interlayer-satellite magnetic nanocomposites (Fe 3 O 4 @PEI/Au MBA @Ag MBA ) as dual-functional SERS tags. Under the optimal conditions, the detection ranges of AFB1 and ZEN in corn samples were 0.1-10 μg/kg and 4-400 μg/kg, respectively. Moreover, the test results for two mycotoxins in contaminated corn samples employing the suggested SERS-LFIA was in line with those of the HPLC technique. Multiple enzymes induce biological cascade catalysis is essential in nature and industrial production. However, the shortcomings of enzymes, including unsatisfactory stability, reusability, and sensitivity in harsh microenvironment, have restricted their broader use. Here, we report a facile method for fabricating a cascade system by combining the benefits of immobilized enzymes and biomimetic catalysis based on magnetic metal-organic framework nanoflowers (mMOFNFs). mMOFNFs prepared through the layered double hydroxide-derived strategy exhibited remarkable peroxidase-like activity and accessible amino interface, enabling it to serve not only as a reliable carrier for α-glucosidase and glucose oxidase fixation, but also as a nanozyme participating in cascade. The isolation of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), including those secreted by pathological cells, with high efficiency and purity is highly demanded for research studies and practical applications. Conventional sEV isolation methods suffer from low yield, presence of contaminants, long-term operation and high costs. Bead-assisted platforms are considered to be effective for trapping sEVs with high recovery yield and sufficient purity for further molecular profiling. In this study, magnetically responsive beads made of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) particles impregnated with iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles are fabricated using a freezing-induced loading (FIL) method. The developed magnetic beads demonstrate sufficient magnetization and can be collected by a permanent magnet, ensuring their rapid and gentle capture from an aqueous solution. The tannic acid on the surface of magnetic beads is formed by a layer-by-layer (LbL) method and is used to induce coupling of sEVs with the surface of magnetic beads. These tannic acid coated magnetic beads (TAMB) were applied to capture sEVs derived from MCF7 and HCT116 cell lines. Quantitative data derived from nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) and BCA methods revealed the capture efficiency and recovery yield of about 60%. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) imaging of sEVs on the surface of TAMBs indicated their structural integrity. Compared with the size exclusion chromatography (SEC) method, the proposed approach demonstrated comparable efficiency in terms of recovery yield and purity, while offering a relatively short operation time. These results highlight the high potential of the TAMB approach for the enrichment of sEVs from biological fluids, such as cell culture media.

Magnetic motors are a class of out-of-equilibrium particles that exhibit controlled and fast motion overcoming Brownian fluctuations by harnessing external magnetic fields. The advances in this field resulted in motors that have been used for different applications, such as biomedicine or environmental remediation. In this Perspective, an overview of the recent advancements of magnetic motors is provided, with a special focus on controlled motion. This aspect extends from trapping, steering, and guidance to organized motor grouping and degrouping, which is known as swarm control. Further, the integration of magnetic motors in soft robots to actuate their motion is also discussed. Multi-frequency ultrasound-assisted thawing (MUAT) has been proven to be an effective method of maintaining the quality of frozen food. The effects of magnetic nano-particles (MNPs) combined with MUAT and multi-frequency ultrasound-assisted sequential thawing (MUST) on water retention, myofibrillar protein (MP) structural characteristics, function characteristics, and MP aggregation and degradation of salmon (Salmo salar) were studied. The results showed that MNPs combined with multi-frequency ultrasound-assisted sequential thawing (MNPs-MUST) significantly improved the thawing rate and the retention of water and had better emulsifying and foaming properties. MNPs-MUST treatment reduced the oxidation and degradation of MP, increased sulfhydryl content, and protected the structure of MP. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) indicated that the MP transformed into a filamentous polymer into more evenly distributed units, resulting in higher protein solubility, lower surface hydrophobicity, and lower protein turbidity. The development of an advanced analytical platform with regard to SARS-CoV-2 is crucial for public health. Herein, we present a machine learning platform based on paper-assisted ratiometric fluorescent sensors for highly sensitive detection of the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp gene. The assay involves target-induced rolling circle amplification to generate magnetic DNAzyme, which is then detectable using the paper-assisted ratiometric fluorescent sensor. This sensor detects the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp gene with a visible-fluorescence color response. Moreover, leveraging different fluorescence responses, the ResNet algorithm of machine learning assists in accurately identifying fluorescence images and differentiating the concentration of the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp gene with over 99% recognition accuracy. The machine learning platform exhibits exceptional sensitivity and color responsiveness, achieving a limit of detection of 30 fM for the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp gene. Developing effective methods for highly sensitive detection of phenolic endocrine disruptors (EDCs) is especially urgent. Herein, a magnetic hydroxyl-functional porous organic polymer (M-FH-POP) was facilely synthesized by green diazo-couple reaction using basic fuchsin and hesperetin as monomer for the first time. M-FH-POP delivered superior adsorption performance for phenolic EDCs. The adsorption mechanism was hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interaction and π-π interplay. With M-FH-POP as adsorbent, a magnetic solid phase extraction method was established for extracting trace phenolic EDCs (bisphenol A, 4-tert-butylphenol, bisphenol F and bisphenol B) in water and fish before ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry analysis. The method displayed low detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.05-0.15 ng mL -1 for water and 0.08-0.3 ng g -1 for fish. The spiked recoveries were 88.3 %-109.8 % with the relative standard deviations of 2.4 %-6.4 %. Food safety represents a critical global public health issue, with safety challenges posed by foodborne pathogens garnering extensive attention. Therefore, we introduce a co-recognition, enrichment and sensing (CES) all-in-one strategy for analysis of bacteria with low background and high specificity. This method employs antimicrobial peptide (AMP) functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to enrich bacteria and uses aptamer@Au@PBA (K x MFe(CN) 6 (M = Pb and Ni)) NPs as silent SERS tags. When both S. aureus and E. coli O157:H7 are present, the silent SERS probes could specifically label the target bacteria, forming a sandwich-like structure. This binding induces silent Raman shifts (2139 cm -1 and 2197 cm -1 ), enabling quantification of two bacteria. Coupling with the modular flexible microfluidics and magnetic control slider device, this platform facilitates rapid switching between magnetic loading and elution. The CES SERS method demonstrated linear relationships for both S. aureus and E. coli O157:H7 at 50-1600 cfu mL -1 , with detection limits of 14 and 18 cfu mL -1 , respectively. The method achieved recovery rates of 85.6-112% and relative standard deviations of 1.5-8.6%. Validation using the ELISA method revealed relative errors between -7.5 and 4.3%. Oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma is an aggressive type of oral carcinomas. Resistance to conventional therapy is suggested to be caused by cancer stem cells. Selenium nanoparticles are recently emerging as promising anticancer agent. The production of nanostructures with magnetic properties presented a great interest in the field of biomedicine. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the anticancer potential of three different magnetic selenium nanocomposites against tongue carcinoma stem cells in vitro. Cultured tongue carcinoma stem cells were classified into four groups. Group I received no treatment. Groups II, III, and IV received magnetic selenium, titanium-magnetic selenium, and sodium borate-magnetic selenium nanocomposites respectively. The cultured cells were analyzed by MTT cell proliferation assay and a transmission electron microscope at 24 and 48 h. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test. MTT assay revealed that at 24 h, only group II showed significant reduction in cell proliferation compared to groups I, III, and IV. However, after 48 h, all intervention groups showed significant reduction in cell proliferation compared to the untreated group. Ultrastructural examination revealed that all the used nanocomposites had an apoptogenic activity against cultured cells at both 24 and 48 h intervals. The most obvious ultrastructural changes appeared in group II followed by group III at 48 h. It was concluded that the three magnetic selenium nanocomposites demonstrated an anticancer effect against tongue carcinoma stem cells in vitro.
