Starting from H. Fr\"ohlich's second-quantized Hamiltonian for a $d$-dimensional electron gas in interaction with lattice phonons describing the quantum vibrations of a metal, we present a rigorous mathematical derivation of the superconducting state, following the principles laid out originally in 1957 by J. Bardeen, L. Cooper and J. Schrieffer. As in the series of papers written on the subject in the 90es, of which the present paper is a continuation, the representation of ions as a uniform charge background allows for a $(1+d)$-dimensional fermionic quantum-field theoretic reformulation of the model at equilibrium. For simplicity, we restrict in this article to $d=2$ dimensions and zero temperature, and disregard effects due to electromagnetic interactions. Under these assumptions, we prove transition from a Fermi liquid state to a superconducting state made up of Cooper pairs of electrons at an energy level $\Gamma_{\phi}\sim \hbar\omega_D e^{-\pi/m\lambda}$ equal to the mass gap, expressed in terms of the Debye frequency $\omega_D$, electron mass $m$ and coupling constant $\lambda$. The dynamical $U(1)$-symmetry breaking produces at energies lower than the energy gap $\Gamma_{\phi}$ a Goldstone boson, a non-massive particle described by an effective $(2+1)$-dimensional non-linear sigma-model, whose parameters and correlations are computed. The proof relies on a mixture of general concepts and tools (multi-scale cluster expansions, Ward identities), adapted to this quantum many-body problem with its extended infra-red singularity located on the Fermi circle, and a specific $1/N$-expansion giving the leading diagrams at intermediate energies. Ladder diagrams are proved to provide the leading behavior in the infra-red limit, in agreement with mean-field theory predictions., Comment: 168 pages

Let $B=(B_1(t),\ldots,B_d(t))$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $\alpha<1/4$. Defining properly iterated integrals of $B$ is a difficult task because of the low H\"older regularity index of its paths. Yet rough path theory shows it is the key to the construction of a stochastic calculus with respect to $B$, or to solving differential equations driven by $B$. We show in this paper how to obtain second-order iterated integrals as the limit when the ultra-violet cut-off goes to infinity of iterated integrals of weakly interacting fields defined using the tools of constructive field theory, in particular, cluster expansion and renormalization. The construction extends to a large class of Gaussian fields with the same short-distance behaviour, called multi-scale Gaussian fields. We propose a new formalism for quantum field theory which is neither based on functional integrals, nor on Feynman graphs, but on marked trees. This formalism is constructive, i.e. it computes correlation functions through convergent rather than divergent expansions. It applies both to Fermionic and Bosonic theories. It is compatible with the renormalization group, and it allows to define non-perturbatively {\it differential} renormalization group equations. It accommodates any general stable polynomial Lagrangian. It can equally well treat noncommutative models or matrix models such as the Grosse-Wulkenhaar model. Perhaps most importantly it removes the space-time background from its central place in QFT, paving the way for a nonperturbative definition of field theory in noninteger dimension., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

This work proposes a very simple random matrix model, the Flip Matrix Model, liable to approximate the behavior of a two dimensional electron in a weak random potential. Its construction is based on a phase space analysis, a suitable discretization and a simplification of the true model. The density of states of this model is investigated using the supersymmetric method and shown to be given, in the limit of large size of the matrix by the usual Wigner's semi-circle law., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure

In this paper we complete the first step, namely the uniform bound on completely convergent contributions, towards proving that a three dimensional interacting system of Fermions is a Fermi liquid in the sense of Salmhofer. The analysis relies on a direct space decomposition of the propagator, on a bosonic multiscale cluster expansion and on the Hadamard inequality, rather than on a Fermionic expansion and an angular analysis in momentum space, as was used in the recent proof by two of us of Salmhofer's criterion in two dimensions., Comment: 85 pages, 13 figures

Recently Neumayr and Metzner have shown that the connected N-point density- correlation functions of the two-dimensional and the one-dimensional Fermi gas at one-loop order generically vanish/are regular in the small momentum/small energy-momentum limits. We compute connected Green's functions of a Bosonic field theory with cutoffs by means of a ``minimal'' expansion which in a single move, interpolating a generalized propagator, performs the usual tasks of the cluster and Mayer expansion. In this way it allows a direct construction of the infinite volume or thermodynamic limit and it brings constructive Bosonic expansions closer to constructive Fermionic expansions and to perturbation theory., Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure

In this paper we describe a strategy to study the Anderson model of an electron in a random potential at weak coupling by a renormalization group analysis. There is an interesting technical analogy between this problem and the theory of random matrices. In d=2 the random matrices which appear are approximately of the free type well known to physicists and mathematicians, and their asymptotic eigenvalue distribution is therefore simply Wigner's law. However in d=3 the natural random matrices that appear have non-trivial constraints of a geometrical origin. It would be interesting to develop a general theory of these constrained random matrices, which presumably play an interesting role for many non-integrable problems related to diffusion. We present a first step in this direction, namely a rigorous bound on the tail of the eigenvalue distribution of such objects based on large deviation and graphical estimates.
