1. A Readiness Level Assessment Framework for Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM)

Abstract

In this study, a comprehensive framework for assessing the readiness of production systems for Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) has been developed and presented. The framework includes four pillars of ZDM readiness, namely Personnel, Procedures, Infrastructure, and Company Culture, to help companies understand their level of readiness and plan for successful implementation of ZDM. We argue that a manufacturing company will be better equipped to embrace ZDM if it performs well in these four areas. We propose a tool that uses yes/no questionnaires to assess a manufacturing system’s readiness for ZDM. The results of the questionnaire will objectively show the true level of cultural readiness for ZDM adoption, and the level of investment required for implementation will depend on the level of readiness. This tool can help companies gain a clear understanding of their readiness and create a plan for implementing ZDM. Overall, our framework and tool can help manufacturers improve the quality of their products and be ready for ZDM adoption.

Abstract

Background: Although long-term management of psoriasis is paramount, this approach is challenging in clinical practice. In the recent PSO-LONG trial, a fixed-dose combination of betamethasone dipropionate (BD) and calcipotriol (Cal) foam applied twice a week on non-consecutive days for 52 weeks (proactive treatment) reduced the risk of relapse. However, the role of Cal/BD foam in the long-term management of psoriasis needs further clarifications. The ProActive Management (PAM) program, a nationwide Italian project, aims at reaching a consensus on the role of proactive management of psoriasis. Methods: A steering committee generated some statements through the nominal group technique (NGT). The statements were voted by an expert panel in an adapted Delphi voting process. Results: Eighteen statements were proposed, and the majority of them (14/18) reached a consensus during the Delphi voting. The need to provide long-term proactive topical treatment to reduce the risk of relapse for the treatment of challenging diseases sites or in patients where phototherapy or systemic therapies are contraindicated/ineffective was widely recognized. A consensus was reached about the possibility to associate the proactive treatment with systemic and biological therapies, without the need for dose intensification, thus favoring a prolonged remission. Moreover, the proactive treatment was recognized as more effective than weekend therapy in increasing time free from relapses. Approaches to improve adherence, on the other hand, need further investigation. Conclusions: The inclusion in guidelines of a proactive strategy among the effective treatment options will be a fundamental step in the evolution of a mild-moderate psoriasis therapeutic approach.

Abstract

Zero Defect Manufacturing is a disruptive concept that has the potential to entirely reshape the manufacturing ideology. Building on the same quality management philosophy that underpins both lean production and Six Sigma, the Zero Defect Manufacturing paradigm has in recent years developed significantly, given the onset of Industry 4.0 and the increasing maturity of its digital technologies. In this paper, we review contemporary advances in Zero Defect Manufacturing using structured literature review. We explore emergent themes and present important directions for future development in this continuously emerging field of research and practice. We highlight two specific Zero Defect Manufacturing strategy types: defect prevention, and defect compensation; as well as identify two important themes for future ZDM research, namely advancing ZDM research (particularly with a view to progressing from zero-defect processes to zero-waste value chain strategies) and overcoming the global application challenges of ZDM (with emphasis on cyber-security and the extension of defect prevention and compensation strategies to less explored manufacturing processes).

Abstract

In many sectors such as the aerospace industry, the manufacturing of rotating components is based on multi-stage production systems to achieve the complex requirements of high quality products. Even in the presence of Industry 4.0 and the increasing connectivity, these systems are very prone to failure due to the high level of potential influences of both the system and the products, ultimately leading to defects. The project “ForZDM”, funded by the EU under Horizon2020, envisions reducing scrap rate by avoiding and compensating defects at an early stage thus guaranteeing a high quality product. This paper presents an approach using an existing manufacturing line to compensate the dimensional deviations of an inner contour of a turbine shaft at an early stage. Based on measurements of the inner contour, a new rotation axis for the subsequent manufacturing processes is calculated in order to avoid unbalances at the end-of-line control. Different algorithms are developed and integrated in a web-based application to find an optimal rotation axis under consideration of the to-be-manufactured outer contour in an operator-friendly usage on the shop floor.
