Background Overweight and obesity now affect more than a third of the world’s population. They are strongly associated with somatic diseases, in particular increasing the risk of many metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, but also with mental disorders. In particular, there is a strong association between obesity and depression. As a result, more attention is paid to the neurobiological, behavioural, and psychological mechanisms involved in eating. One of these is food addiction (FA). Research comparing lifestyle elements, physical and mental health problems of excess body weight and individuals with FA is limited and has focused on younger people, mainly students. There is also a lack of studies that relate actual metabolic parameters to FA. To better understand the problem of FA also in older adults, it is important to understand the specific relationships between these variables. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 172 adults with overweight and obesity (82% female) aged 23–85 years. The mean age of all subjects was M = 59.97 years (SD = 11.93), the mean BMI was M = 32.05 kg/m2 (SD = 4.84), and the mean body fat was M = 39.12% (SD = 6.48). The following questionnaires were used: Food Frequency Questionnaire-6 (FFQ-6), Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18 (TFEQ-R18), Yale Food Addiction Scale 2. 0 (YFAS 2.0), Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Body composition, anthropometry, fasting glucose, lipid profile, and blood pressure were measured. Results A total of 22.7% of participants with overweight and obesity had symptoms of depression according to the SDS, and 18.6% met the criteria for FA according to YFAS 2.0. FA was statistically significantly more common among people up to 50 years. BMI, body fat mass, diastolic blood pressure and sedentary behaviour were statistically significantly higher in people with FA symptoms. Those who were sedentary for 301–450 min per day were significantly more likely to have depressive symptoms, and those who were sedentary for more than 450 min per day were significantly more likely to have FA symptoms. Conclusions Our findings complement the current literature on FA, particularly in older adults and metabolic parameters, and suggest further research directions. Although our cross-sectional study design does not allow causal interpretations, increasing physical activity appears to be particularly important in the management of people with overweight or obesity and FA. This may be even more important than for people with depression alone, but future research is needed to explore these relationships further.

Abstract Background Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) symptoms associated with liver insufficiency are linked to the neurotoxic effects of ammonia and other toxic metabolites reaching the brain via the blood–brain barrier (BBB), further aggravated by the inflammatory response. Cumulative evidence documents that the non-coding single-stranded RNAs, micro RNAs (miRs) control the BBB functioning. However, miRs’ involvement in BBB breakdown in HE is still underexplored. Here, we hypothesized that in rats with acute liver failure (ALF) or rats subjected to hyperammonemia, altered circulating miRs affect BBB composing proteins. Methods Transmission electron microscopy was employed to delineate structural alterations of the BBB in rats with ALF (thioacetamide (TAA) intraperitoneal (ip.) administration) or hyperammonemia (ammonium acetate (OA) ip. administration). The BBB permeability was determined with Evans blue dye and sodium fluorescein assay. Plasma MiRs were profiled by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), followed by in silico analysis. Selected miRs, verified by qRT-PCR, were examined in cultured rat brain endothelial cells. Targeted protein alterations were elucidated with immunofluorescence, western blotting, and, after selected miR mimics transfection, through an in vitro resistance measurement. Results Changes in BBB structure and increased permeability were observed in the prefrontal cortex of TAA rats but not in the brains of OA rats. The NGS results revealed divergently changed miRNA-ome in the plasma of both rat models. The in silico analysis led to the selection of miR-122-5p and miR-183-5p with their target genes occludin and integrin β1, respectively, as potential contributors to BBB alterations. Both proteins were reduced in isolated brain vessels and cortical homogenates in TAA rats. We documented in cultured primary brain endothelial cells that ammonia alone and, in combination with TNFα increases the relative expression of NGS-selected miRs with a less pronounced effect of TNFα when added alone. The in vitro study also confirmed miR-122-5p-dependent decrease in occludin and miR-183-5p-related reduction in integrin β1 expression. Conclusion This work identified, to our knowledge for the first time, potential functional links between alterations in miRs residing in brain endothelium and BBB dysfunction in ALF.

The effective management of waste-activated sludge (WAS) presents a significant challenge for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), primarily due to the sludge’s high content of organic matter, pathogens, and hazardous substances such as heavy metals. As urban populations and industrial activities expand, the increasing volume of WAS has intensified the need for sustainable treatment solutions. Conventional approaches, such as landfilling and anaerobic digestion, are frequently ineffective and resource-intensive, particularly when dealing with the protective extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that render WAS resistant to biodegradation. Thermal pretreatment methods have gained attention due to their ability to enhance the biodegradability of sludge, improve dewaterability, and facilitate resource recovery. These processes function by breaking down complex organic structures within the sludge, thereby increasing its accessibility for subsequent treatments such as anaerobic digestion. The integration of thermal treatment with chemical methods can further optimize the management process, resulting in higher biogas yields, reduced pathogen content, and lower environmental risks. While thermal disintegration is energy-intensive, advancements in energy recovery and process optimization have made it a more viable and environmentally friendly option. This approach offers a pathway to more sustainable and efficient sludge management practices, which align with the goals of reducing waste and complying with stricter environmental regulations.

The effect of the diet modification (soybean and lupine addition) on the content of protein and amino acids (AA) in eggs was studied. Both the sampling day and the diet influenced the total protein content. In albumen, the lowest protein content (10.6%) was noted after administering a diet containing 25% lupine; in the same egg the yolk contained the most proteins (16.7%). In the content of nonessential AA (NAA) in egg yolks, differences were noted only for cysteine, with its the highest content in the yolks of the control group. The stable content of essential yolk amino acids (EAA) was observed only for isoleucine, leucine, tryptophan and phenylalanine. The highest contents of EAA and NAA were recorded in the yolks of the control group (~47 and ~53 g/100 g of protein, respectively) and in the group with 25% additions of lupine (~42 and ~51 g/100 g of protein, respectively). AA with constant content in the tested albumens were methionine, tryptophan and alanine. The highest content of EAA (>~42 g/100 g of protein) and NAA (>~62 g/100 g of protein) were determined in albumen of eggs determined in the group with at least 20% additions of lupine. The highest content of EAA for humans delivered eggs from groups 4–6 (with the addition of soy into the diet ≤5%). The protein sources used in the hen diet significantly influenced the content of protein and individual AA in the produced eggs.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective technology for the sustainable management of organic agricultural waste, producing both biogas and nutrient-rich digestate. This study aims to review and evaluate different methods for obtaining valuable products from digestate, with a focus on innovative and sustainable approaches. The main objectives are to identify effective technologies for the recovery of nutrients and organic matter, assess their environmental and economic impact and outline the challenges and prospects in this area. The review covers established techniques (with a technology readiness level (TRL) of six to nine, indicating their maturity from pilot to full scale) such as struvite precipitation and ammonia stripping, which are very effective in recovering nitrogen and phosphorus from digestate and converting it into valuable biofertilizers. Struvite, for example, offers an option for slow-release fertilizers that reduces dependence on synthetic fertilizers. A comparative analysis shows that ammonia stripping can efficiently capture nitrogen and produce fertilizer without harming the environment. New methods, such as microalgae cultivation, use digestate as a nutrient source for the production of biofuels and bioplastics, contributing to renewable energy and sustainable material production. The study also examines composting and vermicomposting, where digestate is converted into nutrient-rich soil conditioners that significantly improve soil health and fertility. The production of biochar through pyrolysis is highlighted for its benefits in improving soil properties and sequestering carbon, providing a dual benefit for waste management and climate change mitigation. Membrane technologies, including ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO), are being investigated for their effectiveness in nutrient recovery, despite challenges such as membrane fouling and high operating costs. The study highlights the potential of these valorization processes to improve the sustainability and economic viability of AD systems and to align with circular economy principles. The results suggest that the continuous optimization of these technologies and the integration of recycling processes are crucial to overcome existing challenges and realize their full potential.

Subject of the study Clinical practice guidelines are an effective strategy for optimizing health care by promoting evidence-based recommendations. Appropriate methodology and a rigorous strategy when formulating the recommendations of clinical guidelines has a significant impact on their quality, reliability and ability to be effectively implemented in practice. Purpose of the study The purpose of our study was to assess the quality of clinical practice guidelines for asthma management using the AGREE II tool. The analysis compared the quality of Polish clinical guidelines with those from other countries and international organizations. Nine guidelines were evaluated: Management of Asthma Exacerbations in Adults - Guidelines for General Practitioners (author: Supreme Medical Council, Poland), Global Strategy for Asthma Management and Prevention (author: The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)), Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ Adolescent and Adult Asthma Guidelines 2020: a quick reference guide (author: Asthma and Respiratory Foundation New Zealand), Australian Asthma Handbook V2.0 (author: National Asthma Council Australia), National Clinical Guideline: The Diagnosis and Management of Asthma in Adults V2. 1 (author: Ministry of Public Health Qatar), SIGN 158 British guideline on the management of asthma (author: Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) British Thoracic Society), Management of Asthma in Adults (author: Malaysian Health Technology Assessment Section (MaHTAS)), Asthma: diagnosis, monitoring and chronic asthma management (author: National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)), and The Spanish Guideline on the Management of Asthma (author: Guía Española para el Manejo del Asma (GEMA)). Results The highest scored domains were transparency and presentation of recommendations (all guidelines scored 100% or close to 100%), guideline scope and purpose, and editorial independence. The domains that scored lowest were in the areas of stakeholder engagement and applicability (79.3% and 69.2%, respectively). The largest differences were observed in the area of editorial independence, ranging from 100% (the maximum possible score) to 16.7%. The guidelines developed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network received the highest overall score. The Polish guidelines received the maximum number of points in areas related to scope and purpose, transparency and presentation, and editorial independence. Conclusions A properly conducted guideline development process, including the involvement of experts and adherence to methodological standards, results in high-quality clinical practice guidelines. High-quality clinical practice guidelines can be used as tools to support clinical decision-making, however, guideline authors should pay special attention to the applicability of guidelines in practice and the involvement of all stakeholders. To improve the process of guideline development and patient access to the newest therapies, it is also important to consider the synergies between the recommendations in clinical practice guidelines and health technology assessment reports.

Abstract Classical novae are thermonuclear explosions in stellar binary systems, and important sources of 26Al and 22Na. While γ rays from the decay of the former radioisotope have been observed throughout the Galaxy, 22Na remains untraceable. Its half-life (2.6 yr) would allow the observation of its 1.275 MeV γ-ray line from a cosmic source. However, the prediction of such an observation requires good knowledge of its nucleosynthesis. The 22Na(p, γ)23Mg reaction remains the only source of large uncertainty about the amount of 22Na ejected. Its rate is dominated by a single resonance on the short-lived state at 7785.0(7) keV in 23Mg. Here, we propose a combined analysis of particle-particle correlations and velocity-difference profiles to measure femtosecond nuclear lifetimes. The application of this method to the study of the 23Mg states, places strong limits on the amount of 22Na produced in novae and constrains its detectability with future space-borne observatories.

Effective management of recyclable plastic waste is critical for environmental sustainability and economic viability. Blockchain technology has transformative potential in addressing the challenges of plastic waste management. Currently, the inefficiency of plastic recycling systems results in low recycling rates and significant environmental impacts due to poor sorting, contamination, and limited technology application. However, innovations such as chemical recycling, solvent-based techniques, and biotechnology offer promising advances in the management of plastic waste. Blockchain technology provides a transparent, decentralized ledger that enhances traceability and incentives through smart contracts, decentralized applications (DApps), and digital watermarks. These blockchain solutions can improve waste tracking, automate payments, and reward participants who recycle responsibly. Although significant investment in technology and education is required, integrating blockchain with the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven analytics could revolutionize plastic waste management by creating transparent, efficient, and collaborative recycling ecosystems. Blockchain technology has immense potential to redefine the management of plastic waste and promote a sustainable, circular economy.

The conversion of lignocellulosic agricultural waste into biofuels and other economically valuable compounds can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, reduce harmful gas emissions, support the sustainability of natural resources, including water, and minimize the amount of waste in landfills, thus reducing environmental degradation. In this paper, the conversion of agricultural wastes into biomethane, biohydrogen, biodiesel, bioethanol, biobutanol, and bio-oil is reviewed, with special emphasis on primary and secondary agricultural residues as substrates. Some novel approaches are mentioned that offer opportunities to increase the efficiency of waste valorization, e.g., hybrid systems. In addition to physical, chemical, and biological pretreatment of waste, some combined methods to mitigate the negative effects of various recalcitrant compounds on waste processing (alkali-assisted thermal pretreatment, thermal hydrolysis pretreatment, and alkali pretreatment combined with bioaugmentation) are evaluated. In addition, the production of volatile fatty acids, polyhydroxyalkanoates, biochar, hydrochar, cellulosic nanomaterials, and selected platform chemicals from lignocellulosic waste is described. Finally, the potential uses of biofuels and other recovered products are discussed.

Abstract Decision‐making for reimbursement and clinical guidelines (CGs) serves different purposes although the decision‐criteria and required evidence largely overlap. This study aimed to assess similarities and discrepancies between health technology assessment (HTA) reports as compared to CGs for multiple sclerosis (MS) medicines. All HTA reports and corresponding CGs for MS from the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and the European Union were assessed to identify synergies in recommendations for MS medicines (approved 1995–2020). A content analysis of HTA reports and CGs was performed to identify similarities and discrepancies in wording of treatment recommendations across documents. We assessed 132 HTA reports and 9 CGs for 16 MS treatments. Final recommendations for reimbursement and inclusion in CGs were mostly similar (90%), albeit with considerable differences in treatment lines and subindications. Since 2010, HTA reports refer to the use of CGs in 42% (55/132) and to consultations with clinicians in 43% (57/132) of cases. Six of nine CGs referred to HTA reports and two referred to HTA consultations, in one case having a formal relation to the HTA organization. CGs referenced pharmacoeconomic studies (4/9) for costs and cost‐effectiveness. To date, not all new HTA recommendations for MS treatments are included in CGs. Some synergy exists between treatment recommendations in HTA reports and CGs, although discrepancies were seen in timelines and in recommended treatment lines and subindications. More stakeholder dialogue and/or consultation of each other's publications may further improve synergy, facilitate transparency, and enhance patient access.

Object of study Clinical practice guidelines are a set of recommendations formulated in a systematic way by a panel of experts in a particular field. Their purpose is to assist the healthcare professionals in making decisions about appropriate health care. Implementation of guidelines is an ongoing challenge in clinical practice. Despite this, there is a lack of reviews summarizing existing evidence on effective guideline implementation strategies and barriers identified in the implementation process. Purpose of the study The purpose of this study was to review existing systematic reviews and scoping reviews on clinical practice guideline implementation methods, barriers identified in the guideline implementation, and ways to overcome them. Material and methods A systematic literature search was conducted in the PubMed database looking for systematic reviews and scoping reviews that analyzed strategies for implementing clinical practice guidelines or barriers identified in the implementation process. The search included reviews published in English between January 2016 and March 2020. The quality of the included systematic reviews was assessed with the AMSTAR 2 tool. Results The systematic literature review identified 138 articles, of which 6 met the inclusion criteria. Four publications were related to the implementation of clinical practice guidelines while two were related to barriers identified in the guideline implementation process. The clinical practice guideline implementation tools used were assigned to appropriate categories from the EPOC Taxonomy. Our review analyzed guideline implementation strategies that included both multiple and single technique interventions. The effectiveness of single-technique interventions tended to produce equally good results as multiple techniques interventions. The most frequently used tools were educational meetings, audits and feedback. Analysis of the included studies showed that passive distribution of educational materials had short-term and small effects, while the greatest results were observed in approaches that included active participation of intervention recipients in the education process. The introduction of guideline implementation tools allowed for more effective use of the guidelines. We also identified three main categories of barriers, including: personal factors (knowledge, attitude), guideline-related factors, and external factors. The most common barriers related to personal factors were lack of knowledge about the guidelines and lack of the feeling of effectiveness of their application. In terms of guideline-related factors, the main barriers were lack of evidence on the effectiveness of guideline use and the level of complexity in using guidelines in practice. The most common external factors were lack of time and excessive workload. Proposed solutions to the identified barriers included, in terms of personal factors, increasing health professionals' knowledge of guidelines. Access to good quality guidelines that will be simple to implement in practice for guideline-related factors, and better organization of facility work in terms of external factors were additional proposed solutions. Conclusions This study is the first secondary literature review to provide an overview of clinical guideline implementation strategies, barriers identified in the implementation process and methods to overcome them. The use of clinical guidelines ensures both high quality treatment and reduces unnecessary costs, therefore proper use of guidelines is very important. Unfortunately, without adequate support, health professionals are not able to analyze all available guidelines and, as a result, guidelines are often applied carelessly or not used at all. Analysis of the research on the area where implementation is planned is essential for the development of effective implementation methods, enabling the identification of potential barriers to implementation and the optimal adaptation of the implementation strategy to the specific area.

Nigella sativa L. (family Ranunculaceae), also known as black cumin, has been used in cuisine around the world for many years. Due to its health-promoting properties, it can be used not only in the food industry but also in medicine. The main bioactive compound contained in the black cumin extract is thymoquinone (TQ), which has a special therapeutic role. The results of research in recent years confirmed its hypoglycemic, hypolipemic, and hepatoprotective effects, among others. In addition, the results of laboratory tests also indicate its immunomodulatory and anticancer effects, although there is still a lack of data on the mechanisms of how they are involved in the fight against cancer. Including this plant material in one’s diet can be both an element of prophylaxis and therapy supporting the treatment process, including pharmacological treatment. However, attention should be paid to its potential interactions with drugs used in the treatment of chronic diseases.

Vegan diet has emerged as a popular dietary choice for people worldwide in recent times, due to concerns such as health issues, animal rights and welfare, and the sustainability of the environment. The purpose of this literature review was to explain how a vegan diet may affect the health of adults and to point out beneficial components found in it as well as any difficulties associated with its implementation. Evidence supports that a vegan diet can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and certain types of cancer. A well-planned vegan diet must include adequate calories and nutrients, as well as the necessary supplements, such as vitamin B12, vitamin D and EPA/DHA. Given the current growing interest in plant-based diets among the general population, it is crucial to understand both the barriers, risks, and benefits of the vegan diet among physicians, policy makers, and the general population.

Summary: Background: The causes for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are diverse and the incidence trends of IMIDs from specific causes are rarely studied. The study aims to investigate the pattern and trend of IMIDs from 1990 to 2019. Methods: We collected detailed information on six major causes of IMIDs, including asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, between 1990 and 2019, derived from the Global Burden of Disease study in 2019. The average annual percent change (AAPC) in number of incidents and age standardized incidence rate (ASR) on IMIDs, by sex, age, region, and causes, were calculated to quantify the temporal trends. Findings: In 2019, rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease accounted 1.59%, 36.17%, 54.71%, 0.09%, 6.84%, 0.60% of overall new IMIDs cases, respectively. The ASR of IMIDs showed substantial regional and global variation with the highest in High SDI region, High-income North America, and United States of America. Throughout human lifespan, the age distribution of incident cases from six IMIDs was quite different. Globally, incident cases of IMIDs increased with an AAPC of 0.68 and the ASR decreased with an AAPC of −0.34 from 1990 to 2019. The incident cases increased across six IMIDs, the ASR of rheumatoid arthritis increased (0.21, 95% CI 0.18, 0.25), while the ASR of asthma (AAPC = −0.41), inflammatory bowel disease (AAPC = −0.72), multiple sclerosis (AAPC = −0.26), psoriasis (AAPC = −0.77), and atopic dermatitis (AAPC = −0.15) decreased. The ASR of overall and six individual IMID increased with SDI at regional and global level. Countries with higher ASR in 1990 experienced a more rapid decrease in ASR. Interpretation: The incidence patterns of IMIDs varied considerably across the world. Innovative prevention and integrative management strategy are urgently needed to mitigate the increasing ASR of rheumatoid arthritis and upsurging new cases of other five IMIDs, respectively. The recovery of valuable resources from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has received a great deal of attention as part of the concept of a circular economy. Anaerobic digestion for stabilizing sewage sludge in WWTPs, which produces biogas and stabilized biosolids, is a mature technology used worldwide. However, despite the necessity of achieving safe and reliable organic recycling, studies on the effect of some emerging micropollutants on this process are rare. This knowledge gap is of growing relevance because of the increasing use of some endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), microplastics (MPs), and engineered nanoparticles (NPs) in industry and human life. These compounds are ubiquitous in wastewater streams and, therefore, may have serious effects on the course of the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, raising concerns about their effects on the environment. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms by which selected EDCs, MPs, and NPs affect the valorization of sewage sludge, with a focus on the production of CH4, H2, and volatile fatty acids. This study takes into consideration the performance during all stages of anaerobic digestion, the shifts in microbial abundance and diversity, and the activity of key enzymes during the treatment process.

Abstract Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a proven resource for the recovery of biopolymers like alginate-like polymers (ALP). This is the first report on the dynamics of ALP produced by AGS (ALP-AGS) in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), optimization of ALP recovery from AGS, and adsorption of cadmium (Cd2+) by ALP. Recovery of ALP was highest when using 120 mL of 0.2 M Na2CO3 at 70 °C for 45 min. Seasonal (1.5 years, over 3100 cycles) and intra-cycle changes in ALP-AGS in the WWTP were monitored. The ALP content in AGS increased in the transition period between winter and spring, reaching over 150 mg/g MLSS. In the batch reactor cycle, the ALP-AGS level peaked 2 h after the start of aeration (mean peak level: 120 mg/g MLSS), then decreased about two-fold by the end of the cycle. The ALP-AGS had a small surface area and a lamellar structure with crystalline outgrowths. The optimal conditions of Cd2+ adsorption with ALP were a dosage of 7.9 g d.m./L, a pH of 4–8, and an equilibrium time of 60 min. Carboxyl and hydroxyl groups were the key functional groups involved in Cd2+ adsorption. According to the Sips model, the maximum Cd2+ adsorption capacity of ALP-AGS was 29.5 mg/g d.m., which is similar to that of commercial alginate. AGS is a richer source of ALP than activated sludge, which ensures the cost-effectiveness of ALP recovery and increases the sustainability of wastewater treatment. Information on the chemical properties and yields of ALP from full-scale WWTPs is important for downstream applications with the recovered ALP.

Implementing blockchain technology in waste management is a novel approach to environmental sustainability and accountability challenges in our modern world. Blockchain, a technology that enables decentralized and immutable ledgers, is now being re-imagined as a tool to revolutionize waste management. This innovative approach aims to improve waste management transparency, traceability, and efficiency, resulting in significant environmental and economic benefits. In traditional waste management systems, the tracking and disposal of waste materials are not transparent and can be vulnerable to fraud, mismanagement, and inefficiency. Blockchain technology provides a secure and transparent platform for recording every step in the waste management lifecycle, from waste generation to collection, transportation, recycling, or disposal. Every transaction in the blockchain is recorded in a tamper-proof manner, enabling real-time monitoring and verification of waste-related data. This paper introduces the concept of using blockchain technology in waste management. The main goal of this work is to show the implementation of blockchain technology in an existing waste management company, using smart contracts in the recycling process to provide transparency. Also, the digital product passport was redefined in terms of circular economy and waste recycling.

Bread is consumed by people all over the world. Its quality may be modified by the application of other raw materials or changes in production technology. The addition of flax cake (FC) and lupine flour (LF) was proposed as a modification of the nutritional value of wheat bread. Bread with non-fermented and fermented FC and LF was prepared, and its physicochemical, sensory properties and composition were compared to wheat bread. A higher than 5% addition of these components reduced the bread volume and increased their hardness, gumminess, and chewiness. To reduce the negative impact of these additives on the physical and sensory properties of bread, these raw materials were fermented by selected starter cultures. The addition of FC and LF fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum lowered the undesirable changes in the physicochemical properties of the bread. It also slightly increased the overall acceptability of the products. Propionic fermentation lowered sensory assessment rates considerably. The following changes in the composition of bread prepared with the addition of fermented by L. plantarum FC and LF were noted: increase in protein (by ~30%), ash (by ~100%), both soluble and insoluble fiber (by ~500%) content. The starch content was reduced by about 18–20%. The modifications increased the nutritional value of the obtained bread, preserving its physicochemical properties and sensory acceptability.

Depression is classified as one of the most common mental disorders. Its prevalence has recently increased, becoming a growing public health threat. This review focuses on clarifying the role and importance of individual nutrients in the diet and the impact of nutrient deficiencies on the risk of depression. Deficiencies in nutrients such as protein, B vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, selenium, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids have a significant impact on brain and nervous system function, which can affect the appearance of depressive symptoms. However, it is important to remember that diet in itself is not the only factor influencing the risk of or helping to treat depression. There are many other aspects, such as physical activity, sleep, stress management, and social support, that also play an important role in maintaining mental health. The data review observed that most of the available analyses are based on cross-sectional studies. Further studies, including prospective cohort, case-control studies, are recommended to draw more reliable conclusions.

Acute liver failure (ALF) impairs ammonia clearance from blood, which gives rise to acute hyperammonemia and increased ammonia accumulation in the brain. Since in brain glutamine synthesis is the only route of ammonia detoxification, hyperammonemia is as a rule associated with increased brain glutamine content (glutaminosis) which correlates with and contributes along with ammonia itself to hyperammonemic brain edema-associated with ALF. This review focuses on the effects of hyperammonemia on the two glutamine carriers located in the astrocytic membrane: Slc38a3 (SN1, SNAT3) and Slc7a6 (y + LAT2). We emphasize the contribution of the dysfunction of either of the two carriers to glutaminosis- related aspects of brain edema: retention of osmotically obligated water (Slc38a3) and induction of oxidative/nitrosative stress (Slc7a6). The changes in glutamine transport link glutaminosis- evoked mitochondrial dysfunction to oxidative-nitrosative stress as formulated in the “Trojan Horse” hypothesis.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology is emerging as an alternative to conventional anaerobic treatment due to its complete biomass retention, short start-up time, high effluent quality, and small footprint. This paper provides a general overview of the application of AnMBRs for industrial and municipal wastewater treatment. The potential benefits of AnMBRs are discussed, such as the degradation of organic matter for energy production, the concentration of nutrients for subsequent reclamation, or the effective removal of organic contaminants for water reuse. To explore the technology for energy-neutral wastewater treatment, the recovery of methane, hydrogen, and ethanol is summarized, highlighting the problems of dissolution of methane in permeate and competition between sulfate-reducing bacteria and methanogens for organic matter. Recovery of water and nutrients for reuse, e.g., for algae production, is reported. Since membrane fouling remains a challenge in membrane operation and leads to increased operation and maintenance costs, methods to reduce fouling are highlighted. Future research prospects related to the application of AnMBR in resource recovery plants and fouling management are emphasized.

Individuals with inherited hyperammonemias often present developmental and intellectual deficiencies which are likely to be exaggerated by hyperammonemia episodes in long-term outcomes. In order to find a new, systemic marker common to the course of congenital hyperammonemias, we decided to measure the plasma level of S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B), which is associated with cerebral impairment. Further, we analyzed three mechanistically diverged but linked with oxidative–nitrosative stress biochemical parameters: 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT), a measure of plasma proteins’ nitration; advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), a measure of protein oxidation; and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, a measure of anti-oxidative enzymatic capacity. The plasma biomarkers listed above were determined for the first time in congenital hyperammonemia. Also, the level of pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators (i.e., IL-12, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-10) and chemokines (IP-10, MCP-1, MIG, and RANTES) were quantified. S100B was positively correlated with plasma ammonia level, while noticeable levels of circulating 3-NT in some of the patients’ plasma did not correlate with ammonia concentration. Overall, the linear correlation between ammonia and S100B but not standard oxidative stress-related markers offers a unique perspective for the future identification and monitoring of neurological deficits risk-linked with hyperammonemia episodes in patients with inherited hyperammonemias. The S100B measure may support the development of therapeutic targets and clinical monitoring in these disorders.

The aim of the present study was to increase the value of rice protein concentrate (RPC) by improving the functional properties of a preparation subjected to acetylation and analyze the impact of this chemical modification on chemical composition, digestibility, and protein patterning using SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and FT-IR spectroscopy. In the modified samples, the protein content increased (80.90–83.10 g/100 g cf. 74.20 g/100 g in the control). Electrophoresis revealed that the content of the main rice protein fractions (prolamin and glutelin) decreased as the concentration of the modifying reagent increased. Through spectroscopic analysis, wavenumbers, corresponding to the presence of proteins or lipids, aromatic systems, and carbohydrates, were observed. The use of acetic anhydride did not change the digestibility of the modified RPC significantly when compared to that of the control sample. The acetylation of the RPC caused a significant increase in its emulsifying properties at pH 8 (1.83–14.74%) and its water-binding capacity but did not have a statistically significant impact on the oil-absorption capacity. There was a slight increase in protein solubility and a decrease in foaming capacity in the modified RPC.

Introduction: Primary care physicians need to have access to up-to-date knowledge in various fields of medicine and high-quality information sources, but little is known about the use and credibility of sources of information on medicinal products among Polish doctors. The main goal of this study was to analyze the sources of information on medicinal products among primary care physicians in Poland.Methods: A survey was conducted among 316 primary care physicians in Poland. The following information was collected: demographic data of participants, type and frequency of using data sources on medicinal products, barriers to access credible information, assessment of the credibility of the sources used, impact of a given source and other factors on prescription decisions.Results: The most frequently mentioned sources of information were medical representatives (79%), medical journals (78%) and congresses, conventions, conferences, and training (76%). The greatest difficulty in finding the latest information about medicinal products was the lack of time. The surveyed doctors considered clinical guidelines to be the most credible source of information, and this source also had the greatest impact on the choice of prescribed medicinal products.Conclusion: The study showed that clinicians consider clinical guidelines as the most credible source of information with the greatest impact on prescribing medicinal products. However, it is not the source most often mentioned by doctors for obtaining knowledge about medicinal products. There is a need to develop strategies and tools to provide physicians with credible sources of information.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disease with periods of exacerbation and remission of the disease. The etiology of IBD is not fully understood. Many studies point to the presence of genetic, immunological, environmental, and microbiological factors and the interactions between them in the occurrence of IBD. The review looks at genetic factors in the context of both IBD predisposition and pharmacogenetics.

Purpose: In recent years, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) has become one of the commonest autoimmune diseases. Its clinical symptoms include systemic manifestations related mainly, but not solely, to thyroid hormone deficiency. The bioimpedance phase angle (PhA) is a reliable indicator of nutritional as well as cellular health status. PhA is decreased not only in malnutrition, but also in many inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between HT and PhA score. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we compared the anthropometric, laboratory and body composition parameters of 49 women with HT and 98 propensity-score-matched women without thyroid disease. Results: Females with HT had significantly lower PhA scores (5.78 ± 0.43) compared to women without a thyroid disorder (5.98 ± 0.49, p = 0.017). Regarding TSH levels, although they were within the normal range in all study participants, in women with HT, they were slightly but significantly higher. Women with HT treated with L-thyroxin had significantly higher PhA compared to their non-treated counterparts. No differences between women with non-HT hypothyroidism and the control group were found. Conclusions: Decreased PhA scores in patients with HT may indicate that the inflammatory process in this autoimmune disease has an influence on cellular health and on the function of the entire body. Such an association was not found in women with non-HT hypothyroidism.

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the world and a current and growing social and health problem. The growing scale of the problem not only concerns adults, but now it particularly affects children and adolescents. Prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of mood disorders in adolescence is crucial because adolescent depression is a risk factor for recurrence of depression later in life, as well as many other mental health disorders in adulthood. The purpose of this study was to analyze data on the dietary patterns and composition of the Mediterranean diet as a modifiable risk factor for depression, which would be a viable prevention strategy and a good target for early intervention and supportive treatment of depression. Research shows that the Mediterranean diet pattern can reduce the risk and symptoms of depression, while western eating styles can increase the risk and severity of depression in adolescents. The number of studies in adolescent populations continues to increase, but most longitudinal and clinical studies are still insufficient. Modification of the diet can be a helpful strategy for the prevention and treatment of depression in adolescents; therefore, the diet of young people should be considered a key and modifiable goal in the prevention of mental disorders.

Childhood obesity and the numerous lifestyle diseases associated with it are undoubtedly among the key problems in modern medicine and public health. However, this problem concerns not only the present or immediate future, but also the longer term. Adult health is fundamentally shaped in the first years of life and in the fetal period. The preconceptual period, which is responsible for the proper preparation of the internal environment for the life and development of the fetus during pregnancy, is also significant. A special role in describing the phenomenon of conditioning the metabolism of the new human being is now attributed to the theory of nutritional programming. Research in this area was pioneered by David Barker, who put forward the theory of the “stunted phenotype” and described the relationship between a child’s birth weight, which is largely a consequence of the mother’s feeding behaviour, and diseases such as ischaemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes (T2D), dyslipidemia, or high blood pressure. This narrative review aims to provide an overview of the history, theory, and prenatal mechanisms involved in nutritional programming and its relationship to childhood obesity and other metabolic diseases.

This study assessed the effect of different lignocellulosic amendments and bulking agents on compost stability (based on a 4 day respiration activity test, AT4, and self-heating factor, SHF) and maturity (based on the nitrification index Initr and the ratio of C in humic acids, HA, to total organic carbon, TOC, in compost, CHA/TOC). With all feedstock compositions (FCs), the share of sewage sludge was 79% (wet mass). For FC1, wood chips (13.5%) and wheat straw (7.5%) were used as bulking agents and amendments; for FC2, instead of wood chips, energy willow was added; for FC3, pine bark (13.5%) and conifer sawdust (7.5%) were used. All FCs produced stable and mature compost; however, with FC2, the thermophilic phase last 3 days longer than with the other FCs. Moreover, an AT4 value below 10 g O2/kg dry mass (d.m.) was obtained the earliest with FC2 (after 45 days, ca. 15–20 days earlier than with other FCs). With FC2, Initr below 0.5 was obtained in ca. 60 days, 10 days earlier than with FC3 and 30 days earlier than with FC1. The highest net increases in HS (86.0 mg C/g organic matter (OM)) and HA (56.3 mg C/g OM) were also noted with FC2; with other FCs, the concentrations of these compounds were from 1.3- to 1.5-fold (HS) and from 1.4- to 1.9-fold (HA) lower. With FC2, the highest CHA/TOC (15.5%) was also noted, indicating that this compost contained the largest share of the most stable form of organic carbon. The rates of OM removal in the bioreactor ranged from 7.8 to 10.1 g/(kg d.m.·day). The rates of SH and HA formation ranged from 1.63 to 4.83 mg C/(g OM·day) and from 1.23 to 1.80 mg C/(g OM·day), respectively. This means that, through the choice of the amendments and bulking agents, the length of the composting time needed to obtain a stable and mature product can be controlled.

Background: Excessive mileage can be detrimental to bone mineral density among long-distance runners. The negative effects of mileage could be alleviated by appropriate nutrition. The purpose of this study was to analyse the dietary-lifestyle patterns in relation to bone mineral density and bone turnover markers among amateur marathoners. Methods: A total of 53 amateur male distance runners were divided into two clusters by k-means cluster analysis. Bone mineral density was measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Blood was drawn to analyse bone resorption marker C-terminal telopeptide (cTX) and bone formation marker amino-terminal propeptide of type I collagen (PINP). Food frequency intake and lifestyle information were measured by multicomponent questionnaire KomPAN®. Yearly average mileage per month was taken from each participant. Results: There were two distinguished clusters: Less-healthy-more-active-low-Z-score (LessHA) (n = 33) and More-healthy-less-active-high-Z-score (MoreHLA) (n = 20). LessHA had a lower frequency intake of pro-healthy food groups, a lower number of meals during a typical day, and a higher mileage training than the group of athletes who followed the MoreHLA. Athletes following the LessHA pattern also had a lower Z-score in the lumbar spine and femoral bone and a lower PINP. Conclusion: The current study suggests that pro-healthy dietary patterns and lower mileage may favour higher bone mineral density in male amateur marathoners.

Buckwheat by-products may be used as promising food ingredients due to their nutritional composition. Buckwheat husk (BH) may be used in meat products as a source of valuable compounds. In this study, the addition of BH to the quality of frankfurter-type sausages was investigated, aiming to reduce buckwheat waste and to develop nutritionally enriched sausages. For the purpose of this study, a range of measurements, as well as observations, have been carried out. This included the following: pH, weight losses, yield, the instrumental color and texture measurement, protein digestibility, polyphenols, amino acid, trace elements analysis, and the organoleptic evaluation. Compared with no BH sausages, the cooking losses of sausages with 3% BH were higher, while storage losses were lower. BH increased the hardness of sausages after two weeks of storage. The growing addition of BH resulted in a decrease in L* and b*. This change of color resulted in its lower level of consumer acceptability. BH addition did not reduce the protein digestibility. The total amino acid content increased with the increasing husk addition, from 161.8 mg/kg to 228.0 mg/kg. Moreover, BH increased the content of manganese, calcium, potassium and magnesium. This research suggested that incorporation of BH improved the nutritional value of sausages with minimal changes in technological and sensory properties.

Decreased platelet count represents a feature of acute liver failure (ALF) pathogenesis. Platelets are the reservoir of transforming growth factor 1 (TGF-β1), a multipotent cytokine involved in the maintenance of, i.a., central nervous system homeostasis. Here, we analyzed the effect of a decrease in TGF-β1 active form on synaptic proteins levels, and brain electrophysiology, in mice after intraperitoneal (ip) administration of TGF-β1 antibody (anti-TGF-β1; 1 mg/mL). Next, we correlated it with a thrombocytopenia-induced TGF-β1 decrease, documented in an azoxymethane-induced (AOM; 100 mM ip) model of ALF, and clarified the impact of TGF-β1 decrease on blood–brain barrier functionality. The increase of both synaptophysin and synaptotagmin in the cytosolic fraction, and its reduction in a membrane fraction, were confirmed in the AOM mice brains. Both proteins’ decrease in analyzed fractions occurred in anti-TGF-β1 mice. In turn, an increase in postsynaptic (NR1 subunit of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, postsynaptic density protein 95, gephyrin) proteins in the AOM brain cortex, but a selective compensatory increase of NR1 subunit in anti-TGF-β mice, was observed. The alterations of synaptic proteins levels were not translated on electrophysiological parameters in the anti-TGF-β1 model. The results suggest the impairment of synaptic vesicles docking to the postsynaptic membrane in the AOM model. Nevertheless, changes in synaptic protein level in the anti-TGF-β1 mice do not affect neurotransmission and may not contribute to neurologic deficits in AOM mice.

Ultrasonic disintegration is one of the most interesting technologies among all known and described technologies for sewage sludge pre-treatment before the process of methane fermentation. This study was aimed at determining the effects of an innovative ultrasonic string disintegrator used for sewage sludge pre-treatment on the effectiveness of methane fermentation process. In this experiment, we used a device for disintegration of organic substrates, including sewage sludge, with the use ultrasonic waves. Its technical solution is protected by a patent no. P. 391477 – Device for destruction of tissue and cell structures of organic substrate. The volume of biogas produced ranged from 0.194±0.089 dm3/g o.d.m. at loading of 5.0 g o.d.m./dm3 and power of 50 W to 0.315±0.087 dm3/g o.d.m. at loading of 4.0 g o.d.m./dm3 and ultrasounds power of 125 W. The study demonstrated a positive effect of sewage sludge sonication on the percentage content of methane in biogas. Sewage sludge exposure to 125 W ultrasounds increased methane content in biogas to 68.3±2.5 % at tank loading of 3.0 g o.d.m./dm3.

Lupine seeds are promising soy replacement in food products and feeds. Eighteen cultivars of blue lupine seeds were examined to indicate the one most favourable in protein content and quality. Two parameters were studied, i.e. total protein content (with the Kjeldahl method) and amino acids composition (with the ultra performance liquid chromatography technique). Both parameters studied were variable and depended both on the cultivar and on the place of cultivation. Protein content was in the range of 28-41% and the worst cultivar, regardless of cultivation place, was cv. Kalif (average total protein content 29.37 ± 1.14%), while the best cultivar was Boruta (average total protein content 37.43 ± 0.98%). The blue lupine seeds were rich especially in leucine (5.3 ± 0.5-9.7 ± 0.5 g/16 g N), threonine (2.4 ± 0.7-4.9 ± 0.1 g/16 g N) and lysine (2.7 ± 0.4-5.6 ± 0.1 g/16 g N). The richest among all amino acids studied were the cv. Bojar seeds from Wiatrowo and cv. Oskar from Przebędowo. It was not possible to choose one cultivar preferable from the nutritional point of view, because a strong influence of cultivation place on protein content and quality was observed, especially as to the precipitation sum.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a life-threatening consequence of hepatic function rapid loss without preexisting liver disease. ALF may result in a spectrum of neuropsychiatric symptoms that encompasses cognitive impairment, coma, and often death, collectively defined as acute hepatic encephalopathy. Micro RNAs are small non-coding RNAs that modulate gene expression and are extensively verified as biomarker candidates in various diseases. Our systematic literature review based on the last decade’s reports involving a total of 852 ALF patients, determined 205 altered circulating miRNAs, of which 25 miRNAs were altered in the blood, regardless of study design and methodology. Selected 25 miRNAs, emerging predominantly from the analyses of samples obtained from acetaminophen overdosed patients, represent the most promising biomarker candidates for a diagnostic panel for symptomatic ALF. We discussed the role of selected miRNAs in the context of tissue-specific origin and its possible regulatory role for molecular pathways involved in blood–brain barrier function. The defined several common pathways for 15 differently altered miRNAs were relevant to cellular community processes, indicating loss of intercellular, structural, and functional components, which may result in blood-brain barrier impairment and brain dysfunction. However, a causational relationship between circulating miRNAs differential expression, and particular clinical features of ALF, has to be demonstrated in a further study.

The Grajcarek Unit of the Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB), at the boundary between the Central (Inner) and Outer Carpathians, resulted from the convergence of the ALCAPA (the Alps–Carpathians–Pannonia) block and European plate. The strongly deformed slices of the Grajcarek Unit consist of Jurassic–Cretaceous sedimentary rocks associated with Late Cretaceous–Middle Palaeocene synorogenic wild-flysch, and sedimentary breccias with olistoliths. Maximum burial temperatures and burial depths were estimated based on vitrinite reflectance data. The vitrinite reflectance values were wide scattered through the Grajcarek sedimentary succession, especially in the flysch formations. This is attributed mainly to the depositional effects that affected the vitrinite evolution. The determined maximum burial temperatures were interpreted due to the regional compression controlled by tectonic burial coeval with thrusting and strike-slip faulting. The regional vitrinite reflectance variations might estimate cumulative displacement around the NNW–SSE and oriented the strike-slip Dunajec fault, which is a continuation of the deep fracture Kraków–Myszków fault zone.

The announcement of the coronavirus pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), ongoing restrictions and isolation led to a break with the daily routine, and suspension of social contacts, but also imposed new challenges on the population related to maintaining healthy eating habits. The purpose of the study was to assess the prevalence of “food addiction” (FA) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland in relation to several variables including depression. The method of analysis was a questionnaire containing original questions and the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS). A total of 1022 Polish residents aged 18–75 participated in the study (N = 1022; 93.7% women, 6.3% men). The prevalence of FA during the COVID-19 pandemic measured with the YFAS 2.0 scale was 14.1%. The average weight gain during the pandemic in 39% of respondents was 6.53 kg. Along with the increase in the value of the BMI index, the intensity of “food addiction” increased in the study group. People with depression had statistically significantly more FA symptoms than healthy people. This work may motivate future research to evaluate the association and potential overlap of “food addiction” and problem eating behaviors during the pandemic and the obesity problem.

In alcohol distilleries, the amount of distillery stillage generated can be up to 15 times larger than the amount of alcohol produced. The stillage has high concentrations of organics and nitrogen, a low pH, and a dark brown color. Currently, stillage is mainly used for soil fertilization. For this purpose, it requires thickening and is used seasonally, which creates storage problems and transport costs. To reduce environmental pollution, physicochemical and biological processes have been employed for the treatment of distillery stillage. However, according to bioeconomy principles, the stillage should be transformed into value-added products. Therefore, this review paper focuses on methods of stillage processing that enable energy recovery. Due to its high content of organic compounds, stillage is often used as a raw material for biogas production. Accordingly, anaerobic digestion of stillage is discussed, including an overview of the bioreactors used and the effects of operational parameters on organics removal and biogas production. The necessity of integrating anaerobic stillage treatment with other treatment processes is presented. As complex compounds that are present in the stillage (mainly polyphenols and melanoidin) are difficult to biodegrade and have antibacterial activities, the effect of their recovery on biogas production is described. Next, the possibility of converting distillery stillage to bioethanol and biohydrogen is presented. In addition, bioelectrochemical treatment of distillery stillage using microbial fuel cells is discussed. For all these treatment methods, current challenges and opportunities are given.

Ammonia toxicity in the brain primarily affects astrocytes via a mechanism in which oxidative stress (OS), is coupled to the imbalance between glutamatergic and GABAergic transmission. Ammonia also downregulates the astrocytic N system transporter SN1 that controls glutamine supply from astrocytes to neurons for the replenishment of both neurotransmitters. Here, we tested the hypothesis that activation of Nrf2 is the process that links ammonia-induced OS formation in astrocytes to downregulation and inactivation of SN1 and that it may involve the formation of a complex between Nrf2 and Sp1. Treatment of cultured cortical mouse astrocytes with ammonia (5 mM NH4Cl for 24 h) evoked Nrf2 nuclear translocation, increased its activity in a p38 MAPK pathway-dependent manner, and enhanced Nrf2 binding to Slc38a3 promoter. Nrf2 silencing increased SN1 mRNA and protein level without influencing astrocytic [3H]glutamine transport. Ammonia decreased SN1 expression in Nrf2 siRNA treated astrocytes and reduced [3H]glutamine uptake. In addition, while Nrf2 formed a complex with Sp1 in ammonia-treated astrocytes less efficiently than in control cells, treatment of astrocytes with hybrid-mode inactivated Sp1-Nrf2 complex (Nrf2 silencing + pharmacological inhibition of Sp1) did not affect SN1 protein level in ammonia-treated astrocytes. In summary, the results document that SN1 transporter dysregulation by ammonia in astrocytes involves activation of Nrf2 but does not require the formation of the Sp1-Nrf2 complex.

Black cumin (Nigella sativa, NS) is included in the Ranunculaceae family and is classified as a medicinal plant due to very high levels of various bioactive compounds. They determine its therapeutic effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-cancer, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, hypotensive, hypolipidemic, and immunomodulating properties. The results of scientific studies indicate a supporting role of black cumin in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, due to the health-promoting properties of its bioactive ingredients. The aim of the current article is to analyze the results of scientific publications on the role of bioactive ingredients contained in black cumin in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Modifying hen fodder is a common way of changing eggs composition today. However, there is no information on the effect of the source of protein in the fodder replacement on egg allergenicity. This research aimed to detect potential differences in the immunoreactivity and protein composition of eggs from hens fed with fodder containing legume. The aim of the first step of the study was to select the proper solvent for extracting allergenic proteins from hen eggs. Two of them (containing Tween 20 and Triton 100) were selected, based on protein profile and concentration analysis. Egg-white- and egg-yolk-proteins extracts prepared with them were checked for potential differences, using SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, and then the Western-blot method, using sera from children allergic to eggs and soy. Preliminary studies on the influence of fodder composition on the composition of egg proteins suggest that the addition of soy and lupine to fodder modifies the expression of egg proteins. The observed differences in the immunoreactivity of proteins contained in hen egg-white samples do not seem to be as significant as the appearance of protein with a molecular weight of ~13 kDa in the yolk of eggs obtained from soybean-fed hens. This protein may increase the immunoreactivity of eggs for children allergic solely to soy.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is associated with deregulated nitric oxide (NO) signaling in the brain, which is one of the key molecular abnormalities leading to the neuropsychiatric disorder called hepatic encephalopathy (HE). This study focuses on the effect of ALF on the relatively unexplored endothelial NOS isoform (eNOS). The cerebral prefrontal cortices of rats with thioacetamide (TAA)-induced ALF showed decreased eNOS expression, which resulted in an overall reduction of NOS activity. ALF also decreased the content of the NOS cofactor, tetrahydro-L-biopterin (BH4), and evoked eNOS uncoupling (reduction of the eNOS dimer/monomer ratio). The addition of the NO precursor L-arginine in the absence of BH4 potentiated ROS accumulation, whereas nonspecific NOS inhibitor L-NAME or EDTA attenuated ROS increase. The ALF-induced decrease of eNOS content and its uncoupling concurred with, and was likely causally related to, both increased brain content of reactive oxidative species (ROS) and decreased cerebral cortical blood flow (CBF) in the same model.

This paper concerns the algorithm of transition piezoelectric elements for adaptive analysis of electro-mechanical systems. In addition, effectivity of the proposed elements in such an analysis is presented. The elements under consideration are assigned for joining basic elements which correspond to the mechanical models of either the first or higher order, while the electric model is of arbitrary order. In this work, three variants of the transition models are applied. The first one assures continuity of displacements between the basic models and continuity of electric potential between these models, as well. The second transition piezoelectric model guarantees additional continuity of the stress field between the basic models. The third transition model additionally enables continuous change of the strain state between the basic models. Based on the mentioned models, three types of the corresponding transition finite elements are introduced. The applied finite element approximations are hpq/hp-adaptive ones, which allows element-wise changes of the element size parameter h, and the element longitudinal and transverse orders of approximation, respectively, p and q, depending on the error level. Numerical effectiveness of the models and their approximations is investigated in the contexts of: ability to remove high stress gradients between the basic and transition models, and convergence of the numerical solutions for the model problems of piezoelectrics with and without the proposed transition elements.

And so EXARC met again, this time in Lithuania, in Kernavė – an early medieval capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of acetylation with different doses of acetic anhydride on the chemical composition and chosen functional properties of commercial pumpkin protein concentrate (PPC). The total protein content decreased as compared to unmodified samples. Electrophoretic analysis revealed that in the acetylated pumpkin protein, the content of the heaviest protein (35 kDa) decreased in line with increasing concentrations of modifying reagent. Acetylation of PPC caused a significant increase in water-binding and oil-absorption capacity and for emulsifying properties even at the dose of 0.4 mL/g. Additionally, an increase in foaming capacity was demonstrated for preparations obtained with 2.0 mL/g of acetic anhydride, whereas acetylation with 0.4 and 1.0 mL/g caused a decrease in protein solubility as compared to native PPC.

The results of recently published studies indicate that potato juice is characterized by interesting biological activity that can be particularly useful in the case of gastrointestinal symptoms. Moreover, the studies also described the high nutritional value of its proteins. This article is a report on the impact of the enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins combined with membrane filtration. The obtained potato juice protein hydrolysate (PJPH) and its concentrate (cPJPH) were characterized in terms of their nutritional value and biological activity. The amino acid profile and scoring, the content of mineral compounds, and the antioxidant and in vitro cytotoxic activity were assessed. The study proved that the antioxidant activity of PJPH is higher than that of fresh potato juice, and the cytotoxicity against human gastric carcinoma cell line (Hs 746T), human colon cancer cell line (Caco-2), human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line (HT-29), and human normal colon mucosa cell line (CCD 841 CoN) showed biological activity specifically targeted against cancer cells. Therefore, it can be concluded that the membrane filtration-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis of potato juice proteins may increase their biological activity and allow for potato juice to be used in the production of medicinal preparations.

Although the membrane bioreactor technology is gaining increasing interest because of high efficiency of wastewater treatment and reuse, data on the anaerobic transformations of retentate are scarce and divergent. The effects of transmembrane pressure (TMP) in microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) on the pollutant rejection, susceptibility of ceramic membrane to fouling, hydraulic parameters of membrane module, and biogas productivity of retentate were determined. Irrespective of the membrane cut-off and TMP (0.2–0.4 MPa), 97.4 ± 0.7% of COD (chemical oxygen demand), 89.0 ± 4.1% of total nitrogen, and 61.4 ± 0.5% of total phosphorus were removed from municipal wastewater and the permeates can be reused for irrigation. Despite smaller pore diameter, UF membrane was more hydraulically efficient. MF membrane had 1.4–4.6 times higher filtration resistances than UF membrane. In MF and UF, an increase in TMP resulted in an increase in permeate flux. Despite complete retention of suspended solids, strong shearing forces in the membrane installation changed the kinetics of biogas production from retentate in comparison to the kinetics obtained when excess sludge from a secondary clarifier was anaerobically processed. MF retentates had 1.15 to 1.28 times lower cumulative biogas production than the excess sludge. Processing of MF and UF retentates resulted in about 60% elongation of period in which 90% of the cumulative biogas production was achieved.
