The International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) was approved in 2001 and, since then, several studies reported the increased interest about its use in different sectors. A recent overview that summarizes its applications is lacking. This study aims to provide an updated overview about 20 years of ICF application through an international online questionnaire, developed by the byline authors, and sent to each World Health Organization Collaborating Centers of the Family of International Classifications (WHO-FIC CCs). Data was collected during October 2020 and December 2021 and descriptive content analyses were used to report main results. Results show how, in most of the respondent countries represented by WHO-FIC CCs, ICF was mainly used in clinical practice, policy development and social policy, and in education areas. Despite its applications in different sectors, ICF use is not mandatory in most countries but, where used, it provides a biopsychosocial framework for policy development in health, functioning and disability. The study provides information about the needs related to ICF applications, that can be useful to organize targeted intervention plans. Furthermore, this survey methodology can be re-proposed periodically to monitor the use of the ICF in the future.

BACKGROUND Test Instrument for Profile of Physical Ability (TIPPA) is used in the Swedish sickness certification process for patients with long-term musculoskeletal pain. The aim was to explore the content of TIPPA in the context of work-ability assessments. METHODS The full protocol of TIPPA was linked to the in relation to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and evaluated in relation to the ICF Core Sets for Chronic Widespread Pain (CWP). RESULTS Twenty-two unique meaningful concepts were identified in TIPPA. Eighteen of those could be linked to ICF, yielding 27 third-level ICF-categories. Ten of these categories fitted the domains of 'body function', 16 were 'activity and participation', while one was related to 'environmental factors'. Perspective and aim varied between the parts of the test. When assessed against Brief ICF Core Set for CWP, TIPPA covered three of nine 'body function' categories and 2 out of 10 'activity and participation' categories. The coverage of the subgroup 'activity' was two out of five. TIPPA did not cover three categories, i.e. 'd175 solving problems', 'd230 carrying out daily routine' and 'd240 handling stress and other psychological demands', in the subgroup of 'activity'. CONCLUSIONS TIPPA could be a useful measure for the assessment of physical ability. However, additional condition-specific items/measures are required to obtain full coverage of core aspects of functioning and disability in a comprehensive work-ability assessment for patients with long-term musculoskeletal pain.

Background In the period 2004–2009, national and regional initiatives were developed in Sweden to improve the quality of sickness certificates. Parameters for assessing the quality of sickness certificates in primary health care have been proposed. The aim of this study was to measure the quality of sickness certification in primary health care by means of assessing sickness certificates issued between 2004 and 2009 in Stockholm. Methods This was a retrospective study using data retrieved from sickness certificates contained in the electronic patient records of 21 primary health care centres in Stockholm County covering six consecutive years. A total number of 236 441 certificates were used in the current study. Seven quality parameters were chosen as outcome measures. Descriptive statistics and regression models with time, sex and age group as explanatory variables were used. Results During the study period, the quality of the sickness certification practice improved as the number of days on first certification decreased and the proportion of duly completely and acceptable certificates increased. Assessment of need for vocational rehabilitation and giving a prognosis for return to work were not significantly improved during the same period. Time was the most influential variable. Conclusions The quality of sickness certification practice improved for most of the parameters, although additional efforts to improve the quality of sickness certificates are needed. Measures, such as reminders, compulsory certificate fields and structured guidance, could be useful tools to achieve this objective.
