Abstract

Large quantum photonic systems hold promise for surpassing classical computational limits, yet their state preparation remains a challenge. We propose an alternative approach to study multiparticle dynamics by mapping the excitation mode of these systems to physical properties of the Laguerre-Gauss modes. We construct coherent states establishing a direct link between excitation number dynamics and the evolution of the Laguerre-Gauss mode. Abstract

A Bell test is a randomized trial that compares experimental observations against the philosophical worldview of local realism. A Bell test requires spatially distributed entanglement, fast and high-efficiency detection and unpredictable measurement settings. Although technology can satisfy the first two of these requirements, the use of physical devices to choose settings in a Bell test involves making assumptions about the physics that one aims to test. Bell himself noted this weakness in using physical setting choices and argued that human `free will' could be used rigorously to ensure unpredictability in Bell tests. Here we report a set of local-realism tests using human choices, which avoids assumptions about predictability in physics. We recruited about 100,000 human participants to play an online video game that incentivizes fast, sustained input of unpredictable selections and illustrates Bell-test methodology. The participants generated 97,347,490 binary choices, which were directed via a scalable web platform to 12 laboratories on five continents, where 13 experiments tested local realism using photons, single atoms, atomic ensembles, and superconducting devices. Over a 12-hour period on 30 November 2016, participants worldwide provided a sustained data flow of over 1,000 bits per second to the experiments, which used different human-generated data to choose each measurement setting. The observed correlations strongly contradict local realism and other realistic positions in bipartite and tripartite scenarios. Abstract

The ability to manipulate light has allowed scientists to verify fundamental theories of physics and to develop a new generation of technologies that use photons as a primary resource. Recent developments in quantum measurement theory have offered new alternatives to approach some of the most remarkable problems in quantum physics. Consequently, the principles of quantum mechanics have been exploited in the development of quantum technologies such as optical metrology, quantum communication, and quantum information. In recent years, weak measurements and two of its most remarkable variants: weak value amplification and direct measurement, have been developed and are considered important resources for quantum applications. In this paper, we discuss weak measurements and some significant applications of weak values. We elaborate on how distinct forms of weak values are used to observe and amplify small effects or to directly measure the quantum wave function of photons, a crucial task for schemes for quantum communication and quantum information. We also review some of the most recent methods for weak value amplification and direct measurement that our group has developed.

We investigate structured photons as carriers of quantum information. We describe our implementation of quantum cryptography with orbital angular momentum, and present our results on efficient implementation of quantum state tomography for structured light fields.

Abstract

Long-baseline interferometry (LBI) is used to reconstruct the image of faint thermal objects. The image quality, for a given exposure time, is in general limited by a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We show theoretically that a significant increase of the SNR, in a LBI, is possible by adding or subtracting photons to the thermal beam. At low photon counts, photon addition-subtraction technology strongly enhances the image quality. We have experimentally realized a nondeterministic physical protocol for photon subtraction. Our theoretical predictions are supported by experimental results.

21. Plasmon excitation using a dielectric slab with diffusion type photorefractive nonlinearity

Abstract

We investigated numerically the TM electric field solutions of a dielectric slab formed by a photorefractive crystal with diffusion-type nonlinearity and limited by two metallic films. This study allows us the analysis of nonlinear surface optical waves as nonlinear solutions of the photorefractive crystal slab. Additionally, we analyzed the influence of these nonlinear solutions to excite surface plasmon-polariton waves at the metallic interfaces. In this case, the coupling between plasmons and nonlinear solutions it is possible because only TM electromagnetic waves are supported by a metal-dielectric planar waveguide. Here, we solved the vectorial and nonlinear wave equation using an iterative method based in self-autoconsistency. With this algorithm, the coupling between the waveguide modes and the surface plasmon-polariton waves are systematically investigated. The results obtained in this work are reproducible and contributes with new information for the design of tunable plasmonic devices based in nonlinear photorefractive crystals.

Abstract

In the present work we analyze the nonlinear modes of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowires and supermodes of the coupled SOI waveguides. A generalized analysis of the nonlinear modes of silicon nanowires is given where we have considered the scalar approximation and its vectorial nature to obtain the analytical profiles. In the scalar approximation, the analytical analysis of the profiles of the transversal modes is based on the solutions of the Helmholtz equation for nonlinear periodic media, where we obtain an integral solution for the intensity which is identified with the help of the elliptic functions. Those modes are characterized by two constants of motion of particular physical significance and in some approximations the solution could become a soliton or cosenoidal type. Therefore, we describe the solutions on terms of the movement and integration constants. This is an important result because defines the nature of the solutions, therein the analysis of the third order polynomials roots of those elliptic functions. The general theoretical model includes the two-photon absorption (TPA) and the nonlinear Kerr effect implicit in the refraction index.
