Prior work shows that women are, on average, more risk averse than men. This evidence has been used to theorize about gender differences in elite behavior. However, whether differences in risk aversion hold among the subset of citizens willing to run for office remains an open question. We report a preregistered experiment with parliamentary candidates in Portugal and find that women candidates are less risk averse than men candidates. This effect is driven by risk preferences in public investments and is not explained by gender differences in political experience. The findings are consistent with a process of gendered (self-)selection in which women risk-takers are disproportionately attracted to enter a men-dominated career and run for office. Despite requiring future validation in different contexts, the evidence highlights the challenges of extrapolating from citizen samples to study elite behavior and suggests that risk perceptions are a relevant supply-side determinant of women representation. ‘Welfare chauvinism’ (or ‘welfare ethnocentrism,’ when directed against native-born ethnic minorities) is a declination of nativism within the social policy domain and a common element of populist radical right discourse. Previous studies have shown that this rhetoric can influence how people perceive the deservingness and entitlement of certain groups to welfare rights. In this study, we propose it has additional effects by evoking a purported lack of reciprocity in what concerns benefits from, and contributions to, the welfare system, such rhetoric can also justify and legitimize discrimination against out-groups in other domains that are unrelated to welfare. We use a pre-registered experiment embedded in a survey of a nationally representative sample of the Portuguese population to examine whether individuals who are exposed to the issue of illegitimate ‘takers’ of the welfare system become more likely to express discriminatory intentions regarding an out-group’s freedom of movement and establishment. We find that in the Portuguese context, where the populist radical right frequently portrays the Roma minority as welfare abusers, highlighting the issue of reciprocity can trigger a sizeable increase in discriminatory intentions against the Romani even in domains unrelated to welfare rights. Studies on perceptions of corruption have grown in recent years but are still struggling with several conceptual and measurement issues. This scoping review provides an analysis of the peer-reviewed literature on perception-based corruption. From a total of 1,374 articles surveyed, 90 ultimately met inclusion criteria. We found two main quantifiable trends when exploring our sample: publications in high-impact journals were slow in addressing perception-based corruption, and perceptions of corruption are of interest not only to political science and sociology but to other disciplinary traditions. In more qualitative terms, we observe that the explicit or implicit definitions of "corruption" behind these studies tend to fall into two categories: corruption as a "Deviant Process" or as a "Deviant Outcome," while measurements can be typified in a two-dimensional scheme: "Sociotropic" vs. "Egocentric" and "Generic" vs. "Specific." Most measurement approaches surveyed tend to use a "deviant process" definition, whereas the measurement of corruption as a "deviant outcome" still lacks development. This might represent a challenge for future research focusing on the social understanding of corruption in various contexts (administrative, organizational, political, economic, legal, etc.). Corruption scandals and their investigation have been shown to undermine support not only for the allegedly involved public officials but also for political actors and institutions more generally. However, we know little about what happens when those investigations end up failing to result in punishments. Is citizens' trust in the legal authorities in charge of prosecuting and punishing corruption also undermined? Do those effects spill over to political actors, institutions, and even the political regime? We address these questions by taking advantage of an April 2021 judicial decision to drop corruption charges against former Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates during the fieldwork of a public opinion survey. We show that the decision had a substantial negative impact on public trust in the courts. Furthermore, although political trust was not immediately affected, its overall levels also became lower in comparison to periods before the judicial decision, suggesting a spillover effect. How do people respond to different decision-making processes in high courts? One long-standing view suggests that citizens expect courts to be neutral arbiters of legal controversies. Although the relevance of such "myth of legality" has been challenged, we know very little about the relationship between the portrayals of the motives of courts and justices and public attitudes in civil law countries. We explore this question in a pair of experiments in Norway and Portugal where we isolate the effects of different institutional frames from outcome favorability. We find that while partisan frames are detrimental to fairness perceptions and acceptance of decisions, depictions of judicial decision-making that emphasize policy goals do not adversely affect citizens' responses in comparison with legalistic frames. The results suggest that, even in civil law systems, preserving the myth of legality may not be a necessary condition to elicit public support for judicial decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Support for democracy in the United States, once thought to be solid, has now been shown to be somewhat shaky. One of the most concerning aspects of this declining attachment to democracy is a marked age gap, with younger Americans less supportive of democracy than their older compatriots. Using age-period-cohort analysis of 12 national surveys collected between 1995 and 2019, we show that this age gap is largely a function of a long-term generational decline in support for democracy, with little evidence of an independent life-cycle effect apparent. The combination of generational decline without a positive and counterbalancing life-cycle effect offers a sober prognosis of how support for democracy in the United States might look in the future. The article presents a study which developed an immunoassay-coupled nanoplasmonic infrared metasurface sensor that detects proteins linked to neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs) like alpha-synuclein, with specificity and differentiates the structural species using their unique absorption signatures. Topics include the role of misfolding of proteins into oligomeric and fibrillar aggregates in the progression of NDDs and retrieval of the absorption signature of aSyn fibrils in complex biomatrix.

Can governments make courts politically compliant without undermining public confidence in the judicial system? Many studies show a positive relationship between judicial independence and citizens’ trust in courts. However, most of them have shown static cross-sectional correlations rather than actual effects of court curbing on trust. Factors such as citizens’ level of education and political preferences may also play a role in moderating reactions to court curbing. We analyse how assaults on judicial independence by populist governments in Turkey, Hungary, and Poland affected judicial trust, using a difference-in-differences approach to Eurobarometer data. While we find evidence that court curbing has an adverse effect on judicial trust, this effect is much clearer among citizens who are ideologically distant from their governments. These findings coincide with experimental evidence indicating how citizens tolerate democratic backsliding, suggesting that, for many, trust in the judicial system can subsist even when courts are made politically subservient. The movement of personnel between roles in regulation, politics, and regulated industries is thought to affect the risks of politicization and industry capture of independent regulatory agencies. To test whether such movements are better explained by formal rules or by sector‐specific patterns, we employ an original dataset of the 152 appointees to 11 IRAs in Portugal over the last 3 decades. We find that variations in the formal independence of agencies have been of little consequence. Instead, revolving doors abound in the financial sector, with a disproportionate share of regulators of that sector coming from, and moving back, to the industry. In turn, appointment of regulators with political links to Portuguese IRAs seems related with legacies of sectoral public control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ineffective governance is known to weaken support for governments and leaders. However, it is less clear whether these effects spill over to the regime and erode support for the democratic system. This article returns to this classic question, now using time-series, cross-sectional data to test whether the effectiveness of governments in sustaining economic growth, providing quality healthcare, and tackling violent crime affects popular attitudes to democracy. We find that satisfaction with democracy is driven by fluctuations in economic performance and violent crime (but not healthcare quality). Diffuse support for democracy, in contrast, remains relatively impervious to changes in government effectiveness. Violent crime is the only indicator of effectiveness which has an impact on democratic support, and does so indirectly, via its influence on democratic satisfaction. These findings confirm that democratic support—which, unlike democratic satisfaction, is thought to help sustain democracy—is mostly immune to crises of performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses the role played by the concept of nation in the interwar writings of Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) and Eric Voegelin (1901–1985). It contends that, although these conservative thinkers were drawn in different ways to the anti-progressive potential of nationalist ideas, the centre of their political and theoretical horizons in that period is occupied by the problems of political unity and authority. Therefore, their nationalism is fundamentally determined by, and instrumental to, their adherence to a monistic and authoritarian conception of the state. This, in turn, leads them to embrace, though not without some reservations, the solutions put forward by the emergent far-right 'strongmen' to the interwar crisis of liberal democracy. Each author tested in his own way the porous borders between conservatism, nationalism, and fascism – a topic whose scholarly and political relevance is far from being exhausted. Recent scholarly investigation of suicidal ideation has been largely based on identifying associated factors and using ideation-to-action theories to explain its occurrence. However, this approach may not be sufficient, as many aspects of suicidal ideation fall beyond the reach of such conceptualizations. The overemphasis on explaining rather than understanding this phenomenon is a significant factor in this insufficiency. As such, it is argued that qualitative methods that use data to derive theories could offer a more nuanced understanding of suicidal ideation. By adopting bottom-up approaches, researchers can explore how individuals experience and understand suicidal ideation and how it relates to their lives and experiences. Background: Given the association of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and kidney disease, we investigated the urinary peptidome to presence and deterioration of DR in a post hoc analysis of trials investigating the effect of candesartan on progression of DR in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, respectively. Methods: Baseline urinary peptidomic analysis was performed on a random selection of 783 and 792 subjects in two randomized controlled trials, DIRECT‐Protect 1 and 2, respectively. End points were two‐step (RET2) and three‐step (RET3) change in Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study protocol (ETDRS) defined level. Peptide levels were correlated to baseline EDTRS level in a discovery set of 2/3 of the participants from DIRECT‐Protect 1. The identified peptides were then validated cross‐sectionally in the remaining 1/3 from DIRECT‐Protect 1. Thereafter, peptides identified in the discovery set were assessed in the entire DIRECT‐Protect 1 and 2 cohorts and significant peptides were tested longitudinally. Results: Follow‐up ranged 4.0–4.7 years. 24 peptides were associated with baseline DR in the discovery set. COL3A1 (seq: NTG~) and COL4A1 (seq: DGA~) were associated with baseline DR in the validation set (Rho: −.223, p < 0.001 and Rho: −.141, p = 0.024). Neither was significantly associated with end points. Assessing the 24 identified peptides in the entire cohorts, several collagen peptides were associated with baseline DR and end points; however, there was no overlap across diabetes types. Conclusions: We identified several urinary peptides (mainly collagen) associated with the presence of DR, however they could not be conclusively associated with worsening of DR. The paper expands the finite difference method to the complex plane, and thus obtains an improvement in the resolution of differential equations with an increase in numerical precision and a generalization in the mathematical modeling of problems. The article begins with a selection of the best techniques for obtaining finite difference coefficients for approximating derivatives in the real domain. Then, the calculation is expanded to the complex domain. The research expands forward, backward, and central difference approximations of the real case by a quadrant approximation in the complex plane, which facilitates the use in boundary conditions of differential equations. The article shows many real and complex finite difference equations with their respective order of error, intended to serve as a basis and reference, which have been tested in practical examples of solving differential equations used in engineering. Finally, a comparison is made between the real and complex techniques of finite difference methods applied in the Theory of Elasticity. As a surprising result, the article shows that the finite difference method has great advantages in numerical precision, diversity of formulas, and modeling generalities in the complex domain when compared to the real domain. Two findings stand out in the literature on public attitudes vis-à-vis courts. The first is that judicial independence increases public trust. The second is that 'to know courts is to love them'. In this study, these stylised facts are used as a starting point to ask three questions. First, is there also a role for judicial accountability in fostering public trust, above and beyond that played by independence? Second, could it be that only the most aware citizens are sensitive to such properties of the judicial system? Third, is the notion that 'to know courts is to love them' limited to systems with high levels of judicial independence and accountability? Using recently available macro-level indicators of judicial independence and accountability and the high-quality survey data collected by the European Social Survey in 32 countries throughout more than a decade, this study provides evidence that the answers to these questions are positive. Background The hepatokine fetuin-A, released by the human liver, promotes pro-inflammatory effects of perivascular fat. The involvement of inflammation in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can affect the kidney and contribute to the development of diabetic kidney disease. Therefore we examined the association of urinary fetuin-A protein fragments with renal damage in T2DM patients. Methods Urinary peptides of 1491 individuals using proteome data available from the human urine proteome database were analysed. Prediction of proteases involved in urinary peptide generation was performed using the Proteasix tool. Results We identified 14 different urinary protein fragments that belong to the region of the connecting peptide (amino acid 301–339) of the total fetuin-A protein. Calpains (CAPN1 and CAPN2), matrix metalloproteinase and pepsin A-3 were identified as potential proteases that were partially confirmed by previous in vitro studies. Combined fetuin-A peptides (mean of amplitudes) were significantly increased in T2DM patients with kidney disease and to a lesser extent with cardiovascular risk. Furthermore, fetuin-A peptide levels displayed a significant negative correlation with baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values (r  = −0.316, P < 0.0001) and with the slope (%) of eGFR per year (r  = −0.096, P = 0.023). A multiple regression model including fetuin-A peptide and albuminuria resulted in a significantly improved correlation with eGFR (r  = −0.354, P < 0.0001) compared with albuminuria, indicating an added value of this novel biomarker. Conclusions The urinary proteome analysis demonstrated the association of fetuin-A peptides with impaired kidney function in T2DM patients. Furthermore, fetuin-A peptides displayed early signs of kidney damage before albuminuria appeared and therefore can be used as markers for kidney disease detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Determining the existence of a relationship between judicial performance and citizens' trust in the legal system. Method: Cross‐classified multilevel models, using data from more than 20 European countries, 80 surveys, and 100,000 respondents, over a decade. Results: The longer the time that lower courts take, on average, to dispose of pending cases, the lower is the public's trust in their legal system. Conclusion: Judicial performance, operationalized as the ability of courts to avoid delays in the delivery of justice, is a significant correlate of citizens' evaluations of their country's legal system. Mobilization efforts by parties and candidates during election campaigns tend to reach those who are more likely to vote in the first place. This is thought to be particularly consequential for turnout among the young. Harder and less cost-effective to reach, young adults are less mobilized and vote less often, creating a vicious circle of demobilization. However, new forms of political communication—including online and text messaging—have created expectations this circle might be broken. Is this happening? We examine data from Module 4 of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems surveys, looking at the prevalence of different types of party contacts in 38 countries, the profile of voters who are reached, and the effects of these efforts on turnout. New forms of party contacting do matter for turnout and partially reduce the age gap in contacting, but still fail to compensate for the much larger differentials that persist in traditional forms of contacting. The 2019 Portuguese general elections have led to the formation of another minority government of the Socialist Party. Right-wing parties suffered a resounding defeat. The election had two key consequences. First, after four years of contract parliamentarism with an extreme-left party, the Socialists returned to their historical position of pivotal party in the system. Socialist leader Costa refused to replicate alliances with parties to his left. Second, the 2019 election witnessed the emergence of three new parties, Chega, Iniciativa Liberal and Livre. The election of Chega marks a watershed moment in Portuguese democratic history, as for the first time an extreme-right populist party has gained representation in the country. In this study, we investigate how socioeconomic status is related to people's commitment to liberal democracy. Based on sociological and psychological theories of social conflict and dominance, we argue that those who enjoy a more privileged position in the social hierarchy tend to develop stronger preferences for the existing social and political order. Conversely, people in underprivileged positions tend to be less supportive of that order. Hence, we expect the relationship between socioeconomic status and commitment to liberal democracy to be context-specific: positive in liberal democracies but negative in autocracies. Furthermore, we argue that income inequality amplifies these dynamics, widening the gap between low and high status individuals. Summary Government transparency has been discussed both as a way to decrease informational asymmetries between officeholders and citizens and as part of what makes for procedurally fair governance. These two different lines of argument generate predictions about how transparency should change voters' reactions to economic and policy outcomes. First, under high transparency, voters should respond less positively to fiscal expansions. Second, they should become more sensitive to incumbents' ability to deliver outcomes that generate benefits in the long‐run than to current tangible benefits. We test these arguments using municipality level data in Portugal. Controlling for variables that previous research has shown to drive electoral support for incumbents in local elections, only in the least transparent municipalities is support positively related with increases in local current expenditures, budget deficits, and municipal wages. A vast literature in social and organizational psychology suggests that support for authorities is driven both by the outcomes they deliver to people and by the extent to which they employ fair decision making processes. Furthermore, some of that literature describes a process‐outcome interaction, through which the effect of outcome favorability is reduced as process fairness increases. However, very few studies have been conducted to determine whether such interaction is also present in the explanation of support for political authorities. Here, we start by analyzing whether individual perceptions of the political system's procedural fairness moderate the well‐known individual‐level relationship between perceived economic performance and government approval. Then, we explore the implications of such process‐outcome interaction to the phenomenon of "economic voting," testing whether impartiality in governance moderates the effect of objective economic performance on aggregate incumbent parties' support. In both cases, we show that the interaction between processes and outcomes seems to extend beyond the organizational contexts where it has been previously observed, with important implications for the study of political support. The role of water in the TiO 2 -based photocatalytic phenomenon is not yet fully understood. The photocatalysis of methylene blue dissolved in propylene carbonate and different concentrations of water was studied. It was observed that the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 (P25 from Evonik) peaks when propylene carbonate solvent is used with minute amounts of water; the maximum photodegradation rate was ca . 6.5 times higher than when just water solvent was used. The conventional interpretation of the methylene blue photooxidation intermediated by free radical OH cannot explain these results. Alternately, the experimental results were interpreted based on the recently proposed “direct–indirect” (D-I) model and a mathematical model was successfully developed and fitted to the experimental results. Abstract Solar thermal collectors including hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) collectors can be certified in accordance with the ISO 9806 standard for an assessment of their reliability and thermal performance. The ISO 9806 standard relies on the Perers model for the latter though the model does not differentiate between hybrid (fluid circulation and electricity generation) and non-hybrid (no electricity generation) operation of PV-T collectors. The present communication proposes an extension of the Perers model explicitly accounting for the effective absorption factor reduction caused by electricity generation in PV-T collectors under maximum power point (MPP) operation, and discusses its suitability for parameter estimation via multi-linear regression (MLR). The solution devised assumes a linear MPP cell efficiency temperature dependence and employs the collector efficiency factor construct on which the original Perers model already implicitly relies, thus avoiding the need to measure additional quantities while remaining compatible with MLR. In doing so, more detailed thermal performance modelling of PV-T collectors is possible than with the standard Perers model, with minimal additional effort and while retaining the original's modularity. The extended model's added relevance is nonetheless predicted to be positively correlated with the thermal and electrical performance levels and the cell efficiency temperature dependence. This paper addresses the impacts introduced on Distribution Transformer (DT) aging due to the integration of nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (nZEBs) into existing Low-Voltage Distribution Grids. The study considers a neighborhood in the Portuguese municipality of Évora where buildings are set to become nZEBs using solar Photovoltaic systems. This transition is reproduced by simulation using real pre-transition electricity demand and climate data. Following the IEC 60076-7 standard to model the aging process of the considered DT, the collected results show that nZEBs can have a positive impact on the analyzed aging process. However, when relatively high nZEB integration levels are considered, this study also reveals that the subsequent reverse power flows can achieve relatively large magnitudes, especially around noon, thus accelerating the DT's aging into prohibitive values. Given the utmost importance of the nZEB concept for the European building stock, this study identifies nZEBs operation related issues that can result from excessive coincident on-site generation and presents a battery based power export limitation strategy to mitigate such impacts on DT aging. Objective: To describe a case of congenital syphilis with a late diagnosis and identify missed opportunities at diverse phases/levels of healthcare, which led to late diagnosis. Case description: Boy, 34 days of life, referred from a basic healthcare unit to a tertiary hospital due to enlarged abdominal volume and progressive jaundice for 2 weeks, fecal hypocholia, hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, low platelet count and elevated liver enzymes. At physical examination, the infant presented with erythematous-exfoliative lesions on the palms and soles, macular rash in the inguinal region, ascitis, palpable liver 5 cm below the right costal margin and a palpable spleen 3 cm from the left costal margin. Infant serology: reactive CMIA (chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay), VDRL (Venereal Diseases Research Laboratory) 1:1024 and reactive TPHA (Treponema pallidum Hemagglutination). Maternal serology: reactive CMIA and TPHA, VDRL 1:256. Radiography of the long bones showed symmetric periostitis, periosteal thickening, and lucent bands in the femur, humerus, ulna and tibia. After treatment with crystalline penicillin, the infant showed clinical and laboratory improvement, receiving hospital discharge at the 18th hospitalization day. Comments: This case shows that congenital syphilis is occasionally diagnosed late as a result of failed strategies to prevent this disease, both in the basic and secondary/tertiary levels of care. The application of interventions recommended by the Ministry of Health and identification of the situation in which there is ineffective implementation of these measures are important to assess routine care in all levels of healthcare and diverse units responsible for newborn and infant health care. TiO2 semiconductor is being investigated and used for different applications such as energy production, photoinactivation, photoabatement, self-cleaning and water desalination. TiO2 has, however, a large band gap, ca. 3.2 eV, which limits its absorption to UV light range that accounts only for ca. 5% of the solar spectrum energy. Therefore, strategies for reducing its band gap aiming to enhance visible light harvesting and making TiO2 usable for indoors applications are being studied; this reduction is mainly achieved by doping and decoration. More recently, TiO2/graphene composite proved to be an interesting material for photocatalytic purposes, presenting enhanced energy harvesting properties and an improved photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the micro size of the composite graphene platelets allows its use without the potential health hazards associated to TiO2 nanoparticles. TiO2 may contribute to prevent nosocomial infections because, similarly to the phagocytic cells of the human immune system, it uses the cytotoxic effects of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) to inactivate microorganisms. These ROS are known to be highly reactive with biological molecules and thus they are effective for the inactivation of various types of microorganisms. The photocatalysis fundamentals and the preparation of more efficient TiO2 photocatalysts suitable for indoor applications are reviewed aiming their application for the photoinactivation of microorganisms. Additionally, a comparison of the effectiveness of photoinactivation with traditionally used disinfection methods is also made. Economic performance is thought to be a powerful driver of incumbent electoral performance, and gdp growth and unemployment to be the "big two" factors involved. However, while in the 2011 elections, under a profound economic recession and growing unemployment, the Socialist incumbents lost about one-fourth of the electorate, the center-right coalition experienced losses of similar magnitude in 2015 under a recovering economy and growing employment. Why has this happened? I explore three hypotheses: (1) the economy became a less salient issue in 2015; (2) responsibility for economic outcomes became more blurred in 2015; and (3) national economic evaluations were more contaminated by partisanship and affected by cognitive resources and personal economic experiences in 2015. Objective: The term "mood stabilizer" is controversial in the literature and criticized for being imprecise and overly inclusive, having its retirement suggested to avoid misuse. Nevertheless, it continues to be employed as it may still carry important meaning. Methods: We employed document analysis for reviewing relevant definitions of mood stabilizer employed in the literature. Then, we clarify the meanings associated with the term by employing evolutionary concept analysis. Based on its results, we present a theoretical model for a mood stabilizer and further match it with evidence gathered from published meta‐analyses and other sources for drugs used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Results: Concept analysis unearthed four attributes of a mood stabilizer that were nested into the following ascending hierarchy: "not worsening," "acute effects," "prophylactic effects," and "advanced effects." "Prophylactic effects" were often considered the core aspect of a legitimate mood stabilizer. Conclusion: The proposed model uses a hierarchy of attributes that take into account the complexity of the term and help to determine whether a drug is a mood stabilizer. Prophylaxis is pivotal to the concept, whose utility lies in implying a drug able to truly treat bipolar disorder, as opposed to merely targeting symptoms. The photoelastic technique has seen some renewed interest in past few years with digital images and image processing new methods becoming readily available. However, further research is needed to improve the precision, the accuracy and the automation of photoelastic technique. The aim of this research work is to get new numerical equations for the phase-shifting method in digital photoelasticity using a plane polariscope. The model was developed to plane polariscope because of the simplicity and low cost of this equipment. To develop the phase shift and respective intensity equations only the analyzer is rotated. A ring under diametral compression is used for the experimental validation. From these intensity equations, the equations for isoclinic and isochromatic parameters are deduced by applying a new numerical technique. This approach can be used to calculate the isoclinic and isochromatic parameters using any number of images. Several analysis are performed with different number of photographic images. The results showed errors reduce when more phase-stepped images are utilized. Hence, one concludes that the uncertainties in results due to effects of errors on photoelastic images can be reduced with a larger amount of phase-stepped images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The notion that domestic responses to financial crises are constrained in a way that limits the options available to national governments is not new. However, the last term of the European Parliament was a period when this reality was brought home to European electorates with previously unseen potency. This study explores the implications of this for the logic of voting in the 2014 European elections. Defection from government parties in EP elections is known to result from a combination of sincere/ideological and performance/protest voting logics. However, this study argues that fiscal tightening policies functioned, in the most affected countries, as a signal leading voters to discount the ideological positions of parties and to behave mostly under a pure protest logic. The photocatalytic activity of a commercial titanium dioxide (P25) and of an in-house prepared P25/graphene composite is assessed according to standard ISO 22197-1:2007. The photoactivity performances of bare and composite TiO 2 -based materials were further studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique to better understand the function of the graphene in the composite. EIS experiments were performed using a three-electrode configuration, which allows obtaining more detailed information about the complex charge transfer phenomena at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface. The Randles equivalent circuit was selected as the most suitable for modelling the present photocatalysts. The use of the graphene composite allows a more effective charge separation with lower charge transfer resistance and less e − /h + recombination on the composite photocatalyst, reflected in the higher values of NO conversion. Although public support for political authorities, institutions, and even regimes is affected by the delivery of positive economic outcomes, we know that judgments on authorities are also made on the basis of several other aspects that fall into the general theme of “procedural fairness.” So far, most of the literature examining satisfaction with democracy has, from this point of view, focused on the direct effects of both economic and procedural fairness indicators or evaluations. This study takes as its starting point a large number of studies in social psychology showing that procedural fairness moderates the effects of outcome favorability in the explanation of citizens’ reactions to authorities. It expands those findings to the macro-political level, using representative samples of European populations in twenty-nine countries. It reveals that the general depiction of satisfaction with the way democracies work in practice as a fundamentally “performance-driven attitude” needs to qualified: economic evaluations matter, but they do not matter in the same way in all contexts and for all people, with procedural fairness playing a relevant moderating role in this respect. Escherichia coli is a commensal microorganism of the gastrointestinal tract of animals and humans and it is an excellent model organism for the study of antibiotic resistance mechanisms. The resistance transmission and other characteristics of bacteria are based on different types of gene transfer occurring throughout the bacterial evolution. One of which is horizontal gene transfer that allows us to understand the ability of bacteria to acquire new genes. One dimensional and two dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) techniques were performed in order to identify and characterize the proteome of two E. coli strains: Electromax DH10B, a transformation-ready strain; and TF-Se20, the Electromax DH10B that contains the aac (6′)-Ib-cr4-harboring pMdT1 plasmid. After 2-DE and subsequent analysis by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), it was possible to identify 76 distinct proteins on the TF-Se20 strain, whereas 71 had a known function. From Electromax DH10B strain, 72 different proteins were identified of which 71 were associated with a biological process. The protein of interest, aminoglycoside N -(6′)-acetyltransferase type 1, was identified by MALDI-TOF MS. The liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique was performed to determine its sequence. Seventy six percent of the acetylase sequence was reconstructed only in the TF-Se20 strain, representing the single protein associated to antibiotic resistance. MALDI-TOF MS and LC-MS/MS approaches allowed us to determine the total proteome of both strains, as well as the acetylase sequence. Both of them enhance the ability to obtain more accurate information about the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance. The pMdT1 plasmid brings a new perspective in understanding the metabolic processes that lead to antibiotic resistance. Biological significance This study highlights the importance of proteomics and bioinformatics in understanding mechanisms of gene transfer and antibiotic resistance. The beneficial effects of short-term exercise programs (4-16 weeks) in the glycemic control of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) are well documented in the literature. Less consensus exists on the long-term effects. This study aims to evaluate the effects of a longterm exercise program on glycemic control and insulin resistance in patients with DM2. The sample consisted of a reference group (GR) (n=102) and an intervention group (IG) (n=23), all with DM2. The GR subjects did not participate in any program, having been assessed 1 time. Subjects of the GI participated on a long-term exercise program (32 months), with assessments every 4 months in a total of 9 assessments. Between each evaluation, there was a significant effect in reducing the mean values of fasting glucose [-0.119 mmol·L-1 (95% CI: - 0.193 - -0.046)], insulin resistance (HOMA IR) [-0.080 units (95% CI: -0.142 - -0.019)] and chronic levels of blood glucose (HbA1c) [-0.073% (95% CI: -0.130 - -0.016)]. Nowadays children spend much of their leisure time in sedentary activities, combined with a high calorie food and low physical activity (PA) levels have contributed to high childhood obesity rates. Creating opportunities / motivation / encouragement to the regular practice of PA, at early childhood, offer greater opportunities to promote neuromotor development, allowing also the development of fundamental motor skills. Objectives: (1) to implement the active displacement of children for kindergarten; (2) to promote play-motor activities during the time outside classes; (3) raise awareness among children and parents to the benefits of PA and healthy eating; (4) to study the effects of the intervention program in habitual PA levels, on reducing sedentary behaviors, in caloric intake, in balance and in cognitive function of children. The sample consists of 39 children aged 4-5 years. The intervention program that will be implemented will have sessions of active walking to school; motor recreational activities; counseling about healthy lifestyles and monitoring general health. This work focuses on finding a numerical solution for vehicle acoustic studies and improving the usefulness of the numerical experimental parameters for the development stage of a new automotive project. Specifically, this research addresses the importance of modal cavity damping for vehicle exerts during numerical studies. It then seeks to suggest standardized parameter values of modal cavity damping in vehicular acoustic studies. The standardized value of modal cavity damping is of great importance for the study of vehicular acoustics in the automotive industry because it would allow the industry to begin studies of the acoustic performance of a new vehicle early in the conception phase with a reliable estimation that would be close to the final value measured in the design phase. It is common for the automotive industry to achieve good levels of numerical-experimental correlation in acoustic studies after the prototyping phase because this phase can be studied with feedback from the simulation and experimental modal parameters. Thus, this research suggests values for modal cavity damping, which are divided into two parts due to their behaviour: ξ( x) = −0.0126( x − 100) + 6.15 as a variable function to analyse up to 100 Hz and 6.15% of modal cavity damping constant for studies between 30 Hz and 100 Hz. Chest pain is one of the most frequent patient’s complaints. The commonest underlying causes are well known, but, sometimes, in some clinical scenarios, it is necessary to consider other diagnoses. We report a case of a 68-year-old Caucasian male, chronically hypertensive, who complained of recurrent episodes of chest pain and fever with elevated acute phase reactants. The first investigation was negative for some of the most likely diagnosis and he quickly improved with anti-inflammatory drugs. Over a few months, his symptoms continued to recur periodically, his hypertension was aggravated, and he developed headaches and lower limbs claudication. After a temporal artery biopsy that was negative for vasculitis, he underwent a positron emission tomography suggestive of Takayasu Arteritis. Takayasu Arteritis is a rare chronic granulomatous vasculitis of the aorta and its first-order branches affecting mostly females up to 50 years old. As semi-presidentialism has become increasingly common in European democracies, so have the debates about the consequences of several of its political and institutional features. In particular, in those regimes, cohabitation between presidents and cabinets of different parties and cabinet dismissal powers on the part of presidents are thought to be a source of inter-branch conflict and government instability. However, so far, most empirical work on government survival has failed to confirm any of these expectations. This article addresses this disjuncture between theory and empirical results by making a twofold contribution. First, it takes into account the internal diversity within semi-presidentialism, modeling the implications for government survival of different configurations between presidential powers' of cabinet dismissal, parliament dissolution and cohabitation in European semi-presidential systems. Second, it reconsiders traditional government survival using the competing risks framework by adding a distinction between two different types of non-electoral replacement: those where replacements imply a change in the party of the prime minister and those where they do not. Once such an approach is adopted, that presidential powers of parliamentary dissolution and cabinet dismissal indeed emerge as highly relevant for explaining government survival in these regimes. Recently, a designed class of efficient analgesic drugs derived from an endogenous neuropeptide, kyotorphin (KTP, Tyr-Arg) combining C-terminal amidation (KTP-NH) and N-terminal conjugation to ibuprofen (Ib), IbKTP-NH, was developed. The Ib moiety is an enhancer of KTP-NH analgesic action. In the present study, we have tested the hypothesis that KTP-NH is an enhancer of the Ib anti-inflammatory action. Moreover, the impact of the IbKTP-NH conjugation on microcirculation was also evaluated by a unified approach based on intravital microscopy in the murine cremasteric muscle. Our data show that KTP-NH and conjugates do not cause damage on microcirculatory environment and efficiently decrease the number of leukocyte rolling induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Isothermal titration calorimetry showed that the drugs bind to LPS directly thus contributing to LPS aggregation and subsequent elimination. In a parallel study, molecular dynamics simulations and NMR data showed that the IbKTP-NH tandem adopts a preferential 'stretched' conformation in lipid bilayers and micelles, with the simulations indicating that the Ib moiety is anchored in the hydrophobic core, which explains the improved partition of IbKTP-NH to membranes and the permeability of lipid bilayers to this conjugate relative to KTP-NH. The ability to bind glycolipids concomitant to the anchoring in the lipid membranes through the Ib residue explains the analgesic potency of IbKTP-NH given the enriched glycocalyx of the blood-brain barrier cells. Accumulation of IbKTP-NH in the membrane favors both direct permeation and local interaction with putative receptors as the location of the KTP-NH residue of IbKTP-NH and free KTP-NH in lipid membranes is the same. A novel composite photocatalyst prepared from graphene and commercial TiO 2 (P25 from Evonik) was synthesized, exhibiting enhanced photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation, when compared with pristine P25. Additionally, the new catalyst showed 20% more NO conversion under UV light than P25. The band gap of the catalyst, obtained from diffuse reflectance, was 2.95 eV indicating an extended light absorption up to 420 nm. The novel photocatalyst was further tested for inactivating microorganisms showing better results than the reference photocatalyst. Under visible light, the viability loss of the reference bacterial strain Escherichia coli DSM 1103 was two times higher than with the bare P25; it was observed 29% of inactivation with the P25/graphene composite and 14% with the P25 sample, following standard ISO 27447:2009. Objectives: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is commonly indicated for refractory psychiatric disorders. However, little research has compared response across diagnoses. Here, we aimed to evaluate the relative impact of diagnosis and clinical staging as response predictors in a crossdiagnostic sample. Methods: In a retrospective cohort of adult inpatients (n=287) who underwent at least six sessions of ECT, we investigated predictors of complete response (a clinical global impression of 1) to ECT. We use adjusted regression models to estimate the impact of clinical diagnosis and staging on complete response and dominance analysis to assess the relative importance of these predictors. Results: Those for whom a depressive episode was a primary indication for treatment were the most likely to have complete improvement, while those with psychosis were the least likely; clinical stage had a significant influence on outcome in all diagnoses. A diagnosis of psychosis was the strongest predictor of non-response. Conclusions: A diagnosis of psychosis (mainly schizophrenia) was the strongest predictor of nonresponse. International economic crises are critical periods for any political regime. The 2008 global financial crisis brought to the surface several weak spots in the institutional performance of various southern European democracies. Portugal was no exception. Government attempts to tackle its negative externalities through a series of austerity measures did not prove successful on various grounds. Poor scoring in the economy generated social unrest. This article tries to assess the reaction of the Portuguese citizenry to the symptoms of failure in economic governance, particularly in what concerns their attitudes vis-à-vis the political realm by using different survey data sets. The analysis reveals that the decline in economic performance and in quality of governance is clearly reflected in citizens’ rising discontent with the performance of democracy and suggests even negative spillover effects for regime support. The available data also suggest that any expectations that the economic crisis might have ignited in citizens’ engagement in political issues seem only partially fulfilled. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The article discusses the moderating effects of diagnosis and gender on the influence of age on the outcome of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The study included adult inpatients who underwent ECT for acute mental illness and analyzed the relationship between age, diagnosis, gender, and remission. The results showed that age alone was not a significant predictor of remission, but when diagnosis and gender were taken into account, older age predicted a higher likelihood of nonremission. The study suggests that diagnosis and gender may be important factors to consider when examining the relationship between age and ECT outcomes. This article discusses the basic patterns of voting behaviour in the most recent elections in Portugal. These elections were fought under one of the most profound economic crises in the country's four decades of democracy, after a bailout agreement with the EU and the IMF, and under an unusually high level of campaign polarization around the issues of economic austerity and liberalization. First, the article examines whether this context ended up being favourable to “performance” voting or, instead, to an enhanced importance of position issues, particularly those related to the role of the state in the economy and welfare provision. Second, it examines how the context of the Great Recession and the European sovereign debt crisis created opportunities for incumbents to use blame-shifting and blame-sharing strategies, and the extent to which voters' ambivalence about who to hold responsible for the sorry state of the economy was consequential for vote choices, either by directly affecting them or by moderating the relationship between economic perceptions and the vote. Diffuse support for democracy, as captured in mass surveys, tends to be treated as impervious to regime performance. Such a finding is often presented as confirmation of the basic distinction between 'diffuse' and 'specific' support as proposed by David Easton. This study argues that this line of argument stems from an incomplete reading of important aspects of Easton's theorisation about the relationship between system outputs and diffuse support. Using multilevel models, evidence from more than 100 surveys in close to 80 countries, and different measures of democratic support, it is shown that government effectiveness is the strongest macro-level predictor of such support. In democratic regimes, government effectiveness, understood as the quality of policy-making formulation and implementation, is linked to higher levels of support for democracy. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is an independent predictor of cardiovascular (CV) risk. Higher PWV values have been observed in Africans; however, there are no established age- and gender-adjusted reference values for this population. Therefore, PWV was measured using a validated device (Complior SP) in 544 subjects recruited from an occupational cohort of employees of a public university in Angola. Since high blood pressure (BP) is an important factor influencing PWV, a subsample of 301 normotensive subjects (aged 22-72 years) was selected for this study. A subset of 131 individuals without CV risk factors was considered the healthy group (HG), while the entire group ( n = 301) comprised the less healthy group (LHG). Predictors of PWV were evaluated using multiple regression analyses and age- and gender-specific percentile tables and curves were constructed. Age and PWV means were 36 ± 9.7 years and 6.6 ± 1.0 m/s in the HG, respectively, and 39.9 ± 10.2 years and 7.3 ± 1.3 m/s in the LHG. Age and plasma uric acid (UA) were the only significant PWV predictors in the HG, while age, mean BP (MBP), and gender showed significant prediction of PWV in the multiple regression analysis in the LHG. Age- and gender-adjusted reference values of PWV were provided for healthy and less healthy normotensive Africans.
