One-dimensional bosonic systems, such as helium confined to nanopores, exhibit Luttinger liquid behavior characterized by density waves as collective excitations. We investigate the impact of a scattering potential on a low dimensional quantum liquid. We consider a microscopic model of $^4$He inside a perturbed nanopore with a localized constriction, and employ quantum Monte Carlo simulations to analyze the density of the core within an effective low-energy framework. Our results reveal the emergence of Friedel oscillations in a bosonic quantum liquid without a Fermi surface. Furthermore, we utilize the Luttinger liquid model to predict experimentally observable signatures of this pinning phenomena in elastic scattering and via the temperature and pressure dependence of mass transport through the deformed nanopore., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + supplement. The study of the structure and mechanical properties of complex fluid interfaces has gained increasing interest in recent decades as a result of its significant scientific relevance to the understanding of biological systems, drug development, and industrial applications. The in situ combination of molecular-level structural measurements with the assessment of dynamical (rheological) properties is particularly valuable, as comparing measurements conducted on separate samples under challenging-to-reproduce experimental conditions can be problematic. In this work, we present a new sample environment at the FIGARO instrument, the horizontal neutron reflectometer at the Institut Laue-Langevin, which includes an interfacial shear rheometer operating in the Double Wall-Ring (DWR) geometry, compatible with commercial rotational rheometers. This innovative setup enables simultaneous structural (neutron reflectometry) and dynamical (shear interfacial rheology) measurements on the same sample.

We introduce the SmoQyDEAC.jl package, a Julia implementation of the Differential Evolution Analytic Continuation (DEAC) algorithm [N. S. Nichols et al., Phys. Rev. E 106, 025312 (2022)] for analytically continuing noisy imaginary time correlation functions to the real frequency axis. Our implementation supports fermionic and bosonic correlation functions on either the imaginary time or Matsubara frequency axes, and treatment of the covariance error in the input data. This paper presents an overview of the DEAC algorithm and the features implemented in the SmoQyDEAC.jl. It also provides detailed benchmarks of the package's output against the popular maximum entropy and stochastic analytic continuation methods. We present a new large dataset of indoor human and robot navigation and interaction, called TH\"OR-MAGNI, that is designed to facilitate research on social navigation: e.g., modelling and predicting human motion, analyzing goal-oriented interactions between humans and robots, and investigating visual attention in a social interaction context. TH\"OR-MAGNI was created to fill a gap in available datasets for human motion analysis and HRI. This gap is characterized by a lack of comprehensive inclusion of exogenous factors and essential target agent cues, which hinders the development of robust models capable of capturing the relationship between contextual cues and human behavior in different scenarios. Unlike existing datasets, TH\"OR-MAGNI includes a broader set of contextual features and offers multiple scenario variations to facilitate factor isolation. The dataset includes many social human-human and human-robot interaction scenarios, rich context annotations, and multi-modal data, such as walking trajectories, gaze tracking data, and lidar and camera streams recorded from a mobile robot. We also provide a set of tools for visualization and processing of the recorded data. Electronic liquid crystal (ELC) phases are spontaneous symmetry breaking states believed to arise from strong electron correlation in quantum materials such as cuprates and iron pnictides. Here, we report a direct observation of ELC phases in a Dirac nodal line (DNL) semimetal GdSbxTe2-x. Electronic nanostructures consisting of incommensurate smectic charge modulation and intense local nematic order are visualized by using spectroscopic imaging - scanning tunneling microscopy. As topological materials with symmetry protected Dirac or Weyl fermions are mostly weakly correlated, the discovery of such ELC phases are anomalous and raise questions on the origin of their emergence. Specifically, we demonstrate how chemical substitution generates these symmetry breaking phases before the system undergoes a charge density wave - orthorhombic structural transition. We further show how dopants can induce nematicity via quasiparticle scattering interference. Our results highlight the importance of impurities in realizing ELC phases and present a new material platform for exploring the interplay among quenched disorder, topology and electron correlation.

We develop convergence acceleration procedures that enable a gradient descent-type iteration method to efficiently simulate Hartree--Fock equations for atoms interacting both with each other and with an external potential. Our development focuses on three aspects: (i) optimization of a parameter in the preconditioning operator; (ii) adoption of a technique that eliminates the slowest-decaying mode to the case of many equations (describing many atoms); and (iii) a novel extension of the above technique that allows one to eliminate multiple modes simultaneously. We illustrate performance of the numerical method for the 2D model of the first layer of helium atoms above a graphene sheet. We demonstrate that incorporation of aspects (i) and (ii) above into the ``plain" gradient descent method accelerates it by at least two orders of magnitude, and often by much more. Aspect (iii) -- a multiple-mode elimination -- may bring further improvement to the convergence rate compared to aspect (ii), the single-mode elimination. Both single- and multiple-mode elimination techniques are shown to significantly outperform the well-known Anderson Acceleration. The complicated ways in which electrons interact in many-body systems such as molecules and materials have long been viewed through the lens of local electron correlation and associated correlation functions. However, quantum information science has demonstrated that more global diagnostics of quantum states, like the entanglement entropy, can provide a complementary and clarifying lens on electronic behavior. One particularly useful measure that can be used to distinguish between quantum and classical sources of entanglement is the accessible entanglement, the entanglement available as a quantum resource for systems subject to conservation laws, such as fixed particle number, due to superselection rules. In this work, we introduce an algorithm and demonstrate how to compute accessible and symmetry-resolved entanglements for interacting fermion systems. This is accomplished by combining an incremental version of the swap algorithm with a recursive Auxiliary Field Quantum Monte Carlo algorithm recently developed by the authors. We apply these tools to study the pairing and charge density waves exhibited in the paradigmatic attractive Hubbard model via entanglement. We find that the particle and spin symmetry-resolved entanglements and their related full probability distribution functions show very clear - and unique - signatures of the underlying electronic behavior even when those features are less pronounced in more conventional correlation functions. Overall, this work provides a systematic means of characterizing the entanglement within quantum systems that can grant a deeper understanding of the complicated electronic behavior that underlies quantum phase transitions and crossovers in many-body systems., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

Adsorption of 4He on atomically flat substrates such as graphene provides a route towards the engineering of low dimensional quantum phases including superfluids and strongly interacting insulators. In this study, we explore the effects of graphene corrugation on the helium adsorption process via quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the grand canonical ensemble. We utilize an empirical adsorption potential based on the superposition of individual helium-carbon interactions and systematically control corrugation, from a smooth membrane to the fully rough potential, via the implementation of a cutoff in reciprocal space. The results highlight the importance of using a fully corrugated potential to understand the plethora of commensurate and incommensurate phases in the first adsorbed layer. Surprisingly, some residual effects of corrugation are still present before and during the promotion and onset of a second adsorbed layer, where a smooth adsorption can lead to enhanced particle fluctuations in a helium-interaction dominated regime., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures (added additional system sizes). Deformable colloids and macromolecules adsorb at interfaces, as they decrease the interfacial energy between the two media. The deformability, or softness, of these particles plays a pivotal role in the properties of the interface. In this study, we employ a comprehensive \emph{in situ} approach, combining neutron reflectometry with molecular dynamics simulations, to thoroughly examine the profound influence of softness on the structure of microgel Langmuir monolayers under compression. Lateral compression of both hard and soft microgel particle monolayers induces substantial structural alterations, leading to an amplified protrusion of the microgels into the aqueous phase. However, a critical distinction emerges: hard microgels are pushed away from the interface, in stark contrast to the soft ones, which remain steadfastly anchored to it. Concurrently, on the air-exposed side of the monolayer, lateral compression induces a flattening of the surface of the hard monolayer. This phenomenon is not observed for the soft particles as the monolayer is already extremely flat even in the absence of compression. These findings significantly advance our understanding of the pivotal role of softness on both the equilibrium phase behavior of the monolayer and its effect when soft colloids are used as stabilizers of responsive interfaces and emulsions.

Detailed measurements of the spectral structure of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons from 10.6 GeV to 7.5 TeV are presented from over 7 years of observations with the CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) on the International Space Station. Because of the excellent energy resolution (a few percent above 10 GeV) and the outstanding e/p separation (10$^5$), CALET provides optimal performance for a detailed search of structures in the energy spectrum. The analysis uses data up to the end of 2022, and the statistics of observed electron candidates has increased more than 3 times since the last publication in 2018. By adopting an updated boosted decision tree analysis, a sufficient proton rejection power up to 7.5 TeV is achieved, with a residual proton contamination less than 10%. The observed energy spectrum becomes gradually harder in the lower energy region from around 30 GeV, consistently with AMS-02, but from 300 to 600 GeV it is considerably softer than the spectra measured by DAMPE and Fermi-LAT. At high energies, the spectrum presents a sharp break around 1 TeV, with a spectral index change from -3.15 to -3.91, and a broken power law fitting the data in the energy range from 30 GeV to 4.8 TeV better than a single power law with 6.9 sigma significance, which is compatible with the DAMPE results. The break is consistent with the expected effects of radiation loss during the propagation from distant sources (except the highest energy bin). We have fitted the spectrum with a model consistent with the positron flux measured by AMS-02 below 1 TeV and interpreted the electron + positron spectrum with possible contributions from pulsars and nearby sources. We investigate the effects of electronic correlations on the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model using the real-space density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. We introduce a method to probe topological phase transitions in systems with strong correlations using DMRG, substantiated by an unsupervised machine learning methodology that analyzes the orbital structure of the real-space edges. Including the full multi-orbital Hubbard interaction term, we construct a phase diagram as a function of a gap parameter ($m$) and the Hubbard interaction strength ($U$) via exact DMRG simulations on $N\times 4$ cylinders. Our analysis confirms that the topological phase persists in the presence of interactions, consistent with previous studies, but it also reveals an intriguing phase transition from a paramagnetic to a stripey antiferromagnetic topological insulator. The combination of the magnetic structure factor, strength of magnetic moments, and the orbitally resolved density, provides real-space information on both topology and magnetism in a strongly correlated system., Comment: Main text: 13 pages, 15 figures. We present the observation of a charge-sign dependent solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) with the CALorimetric Electron Telescope onboard the International Space Station over 6 yr, corresponding to the positive polarity of the solar magnetic field. The observed variation of proton count rate is consistent with the neutron monitor count rate, validating our methods for determining the proton count rate. It is observed by the CALorimetric Electron Telescope that both GCR electron and proton count rates at the same average rigidity vary in anticorrelation with the tilt angle of the heliospheric current sheet, while the amplitude of the variation is significantly larger in the electron count rate than in the proton count rate. We show that this observed charge-sign dependence is reproduced by a numerical ``drift model'' of the GCR transport in the heliosphere. We present the results of a direct measurement of the cosmic-ray helium spectrum with the CALET instrument in operation on the International Space Station since 2015. The observation period covered by this analysis spans from October 13, 2015 to April 30, 2022 (2392 days). The very wide dynamic range of CALET allowed to collect helium data over a large energy interval, from ~40 GeV to ~250 TeV, for the first time with a single instrument in Low Earth Orbit. The measured spectrum shows evidence of a deviation of the flux from a single power-law by more than 8$\sigma$ with a progressive spectral hardening from a few hundred GeV to a few tens of TeV. This result is consistent with the data reported by space instruments including PAMELA, AMS-02, DAMPE and balloon instruments including CREAM. At higher energy we report the onset of a softening of the helium spectrum around 30 TeV (total kinetic energy). Though affected by large uncertainties in the highest energy bins, the observation of a flux reduction turns out to be consistent with the most recent results of DAMPE. A Double Broken Power Law (DBPL) is found to fit simultaneously both spectral features: the hardening (at lower energy) and the softening (at higher energy). A measurement of the proton to helium flux ratio in the energy range from 60 GeV/n to about 60 TeV/n is also presented, using the CALET proton flux recently updated with higher statistics.

Entanglement entropy under a particle bipartition provides complementary information to mode entanglement as it is sensitive to interactions and particle statistics at leading order and does not depend on any externally imposed length scale. In this paper, we investigate the particle entanglement entropy in a system of $N$ interacting spinless lattice fermions in one spatial dimension by combining bosonization techniques with exact and approximate numerical methods. We introduce a general scaling form for the fermionic particle entanglement entropy captured by a shape function that enters as a extensive interaction induced correction to a known free fermion result. A general asymptotic expansion in the total number of particles demonstrates that its form is robust for different values of the R\'enyi index and highlights how quantum correlations are encoded in the $n$-particle density matrix of a pure many-body quantum state., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures. In Monte Carlo simulations, proposed configurations are accepted or rejected according to an acceptance ratio, which depends on an underlying probability distribution and an a priori sampling probability. By carefully selecting the probability distribution from which random variates are sampled, simulations can be made more efficient, by virtue of an autocorrelation time reduction. In this paper, we illustrate how to directly sample random variates from a two dimensional truncated exponential distribution. We show that our direct sampling approach converges faster to the target distribution compared to rejection sampling. The direct sampling of one and two dimensional truncated exponential distributions is then applied to a recent Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) algorithm for the simulation of Bose-Hubbard lattice models at zero temperature. The new sampling method results in improved acceptance ratios and reduced autocorrelation times of estimators, providing an effective speed up of the simulation., Comment: ~8 pages, 8 figures. Novel two-dimensional (2D) atomically flat materials, such as graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, exhibit unconventional Dirac electronic spectra. We propose to effectively engineer their interactions with cold atoms in microgravity, leading to a synergy between complex electronic and atomic collective quantum phases and phenomena. Dirac materials are susceptible to manipulation and quantum engineering via changes in their electronic properties by application of strain, doping with carriers, adjustment of their dielectric environment, etc. Consequently the interaction of atoms with such materials, namely the van der Waals / Casimir-Polder interaction, can be effectively manipulated, leading to the potential observation of physical effects such as Quantum Reflection off atomically thin materials and confined Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) frequency shifts., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures; discussion and references added

Many experimentally-accessible, finite-sized interacting quantum systems are most appropriately described by the canonical ensemble of statistical mechanics. Conventional numerical simulation methods either approximate them as being coupled to a particle bath, or use projective algorithms which may suffer from non-optimal scaling with system size or large algorithmic prefactors. In this paper, we introduce a highly stable, recursive Auxiliary Field Quantum Monte Carlo approach that can directly simulate systems in the canonical ensemble. We apply the method to the fermion Hubbard model in one and two spatial dimensions in a regime known to exhibit a significant "sign" problem and find improved performance over existing approaches including rapid convergence to ground state expectation values. The effects of excitations above the ground state are quantified using an estimator-agnostic approach including studying the temperature dependence of the purity and overlap fidelity of the canonical and grand canonical density matrices. As an important application, we show that thermometry approaches often exploited in ultra-cold atoms that employ an analysis of the velocity distribution in the grand canonical ensemble may be subject to errors leading to an under-estimation of extracted temperatures with respect to the Fermi temperature., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, and Supplemental Information with key derivations. We present the measurement of the energy dependence of the boron flux in cosmic rays and its ratio to the carbon flux \textcolor{black}{in an energy interval from 8.4 GeV$/n$ to 3.8 TeV$/n$} based on the data collected by the CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) during $\sim 6.4$ years of operation on the International Space Station. An update of the energy spectrum of carbon is also presented with an increase in statistics over our previous measurement. The observed boron flux shows a spectral hardening at the same transition energy $E_0 \sim 200$ GeV$/n$ of the C spectrum, though B and C fluxes have different energy dependences. The spectral index of the B spectrum is found to be $\gamma = -3.047\pm0.024$ in the interval $25 < E < 200$ GeV$/n$. The B spectrum hardens by $\Delta \gamma_B=0.25\pm0.12$, while the best fit value for the spectral variation of C is $\Delta \gamma_C=0.19\pm0.03$. The B/C flux ratio is compatible with a hardening of $0.09\pm0.05$, though a single power-law energy dependence cannot be ruled out given the current statistical uncertainties. A break in the B/C ratio energy dependence would support the recent AMS-02 observations that secondary cosmic rays exhibit a stronger hardening than primary ones. We also perform a fit to the B/C ratio with a leaky-box model of the cosmic-ray propagation in the Galaxy in order to probe a possible residual value $\lambda_0$ of the mean escape path length $\lambda$ at high energy. Bosonic atoms deposited on atomically thin substrates represent a playground for exotic quantum many-body physics due to the highly-tunable, atomic-scale nature of the interaction potentials. The ability to engineer strong interparticle interactions can lead to the emergence of complex collective atomic states of matter, not possible in the context of dilute atomic gases confined in optical lattices. While it is known that the first layer of adsorbed helium on graphene is permanently locked into a solid phase, we show by a combination of quantum Monte Carlo and mean-field techniques, that simple isotropic graphene lattice expansion effectively unlocks a large variety of two-dimensional ordered commensurate, incommensurate, cluster atomic solid, and superfluid states for adsorbed atoms. It is especially significant that an atomically thin superfluid phase of matter emerges under experimentally feasible strain values, with potentially supersolid phases in close proximity on the phase diagram., Comment: Main text: 12 pages and 5 figures. There is growing evidence that the hole-doped single-band Hubbard and $t$-$J$ models do not have a superconducting ground state reflective of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors but instead have striped spin- and charge-ordered ground states. Nevertheless, it is proposed that these models may still provide an effective low-energy model for electron-doped materials. Here we study the finite temperature spin and charge correlations in the electron-doped Hubbard model using quantum Monte Carlo dynamical cluster approximation calculations and contrast their behavior with those found on the hole-doped side of the phase diagram. We find evidence for a charge modulation with both checkerboard and unidirectional components decoupled from any spin-density modulations. These correlations are inconsistent with a weak-coupling description based on Fermi surface nesting, and their doping dependence agrees qualitatively with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements. Our results provide evidence that the single-band Hubbard model describes the electron-doped cuprates.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments can reveal local properties in materials, but are often limited by the low signal-to-noise ratio. Spin squeezed states have an improved resolution below the Heisenberg limit in one of the spin components, and have been extensively used to improve the sensitivity of atomic clocks, for example. Interacting and entangled spin ensembles with non-linear coupling are a natural candidate for implementing squeezing. Here, we propose measurement of the spin-squeezing parameter that itself can act as a local probe of emergent orders in quantum materials. In particular, we demonstrate how to investigate an anisotropic electric field gradient via its coupling to the nuclear quadrupole moment. While squeezed spin states are pure, the squeezing parameter can be estimated for both pure and mixed states. We evaluate the range of fields and temperatures for which a thermal-equilibrium state is sufficient to improve the resolution in an NMR experiment and probe relevant parameters of the quadrupole Hamiltonian, including its anisotropy.

A precise measurement of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) is presented in the energy interval from 50 GeV to 60 TeV, and the observation of a softening of the spectrum above 10 TeV is reported. The analysis is based on the data collected during $\sim$6.2 years of smooth operations aboard the International Space Station and covers a broader energy range with respect to the previous proton flux measurement by CALET, with an increase of the available statistics by a factor of $\sim$2.2. Above a few hundred GeV we confirm our previous observation of a progressive spectral hardening with a higher significance (more than 20 sigma). In the multi-TeV region we observe a second spectral feature with a softening around 10 TeV and a spectral index change from =2.6 to -2.9 consistently, within the errors, with the shape of the spectrum reported by DAMPE. Rapid development of social robots stimulates active research in human motion modeling, interpretation and prediction, proactive collision avoidance, human-robot interaction and co-habitation in shared spaces. Modern approaches to this end require high quality datasets for training and evaluation. However, the majority of available datasets suffers from either inaccurate tracking data or unnatural, scripted behavior of the tracked people. This paper attempts to fill this gap by providing high quality tracking information from motion capture, eye-gaze trackers and on-board robot sensors in a semantically-rich environment. To induce natural behavior of the recorded participants, we utilise loosely scripted task assignment, which induces the participants navigate through the dynamic laboratory environment in a natural and purposeful way.
