Abstract

We report the first observation of ferroelectric gating in AlScN barrier wide-bandgap nitride transistors. These FerroHEMT devices realized by direct epitaxial growth represent a new class of ferroelectric transistors in which the semiconductor is itself polar, and the crystalline ferroelectric barrier is lattice-matched to the substrate. The FerroHEMTs reported here use the thinnest nitride high K and ferroelectric barriers to date to deliver the highest on currents at 4 A/mm, and highest speed AlScN transistors with fmax larger than 150 GHz observed in any ferroelectric transistor. The FerroHEMTs exhibit hysteretic Id Vgs loops with subthreshold slopes below the Boltzmann limit. A control AlN barrier HEMT exhibits neither hysteretic, nor sub Boltzmann behavior. While these results introduce the first epitaxial high K and ferroelectric barrier technology to RF and mm wave electronics, they are also of interest as a new material platform for combining memory and logic functionalities in digital electronics., Comment: 4 pages, 8 figures, appeared in IEEE IEDM, December 2022

Abstract

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. Abstract

In a neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) experiment, energy resolution is important to distinguish between $0\nu\beta\beta$ and background events. CAlcium fluoride for studies of Neutrino and Dark matters by Low Energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) discerns the $0\nu\beta\beta$ of $^{48}$Ca using a CaF$_2$ scintillator as the detector and source. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) collect scintillation photons. At the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca, the current energy resolution (2.6%) exceeds the ideal statistical fluctuation of the number of photoelectrons (1.6%). Because of CaF$_2$'s long decay constant of 1000 ns, a signal integration within 4000 ns is used to calculate the energy. The baseline fluctuation ($\sigma_{baseline}$) is accumulated in the signal integration, thus degrading the energy resolution. This paper studies $\sigma_{baseline}$ in the CANDLES detector, which severely degrades the resolution by 1% at the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca. To avoid $\sigma_{\rm baseline}$, photon counting can be used to obtain the number of photoelectrons in each PMT; however, a significant photoelectron signal overlapping probability in each PMT causes missing photoelectrons in counting and reduces the energy resolution. "Partial photon counting" reduces $\sigma_{baseline}$ and minimizes photoelectron loss. We obtain improved energy resolutions of 4.5-4.0% at 1460.8 keV ($\gamma$-ray of $^{40}$K), and 3.3-2.9% at 2614.5 keV ($\gamma$-ray of $^{208}$Tl). The energy resolution at the Q-value is estimated to be improved from 2.6% to 2.2%, and the detector sensitivity for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ half-life of $^{48}$Ca can be improved by 1.09 times., Comment: This manuscript is prepared for submission to IEEE Transaction on Nuclear Science. Abstract

We developed a CANDLES-III system to study the neutrino-less double beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{48}$Ca. The proposed system employs 96 CaF$_{2}$ scintillation crystals (305 kg) with natural Ca ($^{\rm nat.}$Ca) isotope which corresponds 350\,g of $^{48}$Ca. External backgrounds were rejected using a 4$\pi$ active shield of a liquid scintillator surrounding the CaF$_2$ crystals. The internal backgrounds caused by the radioactive impurities within the CaF$_2$ crystals can be reduced effectively through analysis of the signal pulse shape. We analyzed the data obtained in the Kamioka underground for a live-time of 130.4\,days to evaluate the feasibility of the low background measurement with the CANDLES-III detector. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we estimated the background rate from the radioactive impurities in the CaF$_{2}$ crystals and the rate of high energy $\gamma$-rays caused by the (n, $\gamma$) reactions induced by environmental neutrons. The expected background rate was in a good agreement with the measured rate, i.e., approximately 10$^{-3}$ events/keV/yr/(kg of $^{\rm nat.}$Ca), in the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ window. In conclusion, the background candidates were estimated properly by comparing the measured energy spectrum with the background simulations. With this measurement method, we performed the first search for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay in a low background condition using a detector with a Ca isotope, in which the Ca present was not enriched, in a scale of hundreds of kg. The $^{48}$Ca isotope has a high potential for use in 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay search, and is expected to be useful for the development of a next-generation detector for highly sensitive measurements., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Physical Review D

Abstract

CAlcium fluoride for the study of Neutrinos and Dark matters by Low-energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) searches for neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{48}$Ca using a CaF$_2$ scintillator array. A high Q-value of $^{48}$Ca at 4,272 keV enabled us to achieve very low background condition, however, at the same it causes difficulties in calibrating the detector's Q-value region because of the absence of a standard high-energy $\gamma$-ray source. Therefore, we have developed a novel calibration system based on $\gamma$-ray emission by neutron capture on $^{28}$Si, $^{56}$Fe and $^{58}$Ni nuclei. Abstract

A new $\mu$TCA DAQ system was introduced in CANDLES experiment with SpaceWire-to-GigabitEthernet (SpaceWire-GigabitEthernet) network for data readout and Flash Analog-to-Digital Converters (FADCs). With SpaceWire-GigabitEthernet, we can construct a flexible DAQ network with multi-path access to FADCs by using off-the-shelf computers. FADCs are equipped 8 event buffers, which act as de-randomizer to detect sequential decays from the background. SpaceWire-GigabitEthernet has high latency (about 100 $\mu$sec) due to long turnaround time, while GigabitEthernet has high throughput. To reduce dead-time, we developed the DAQ system with 4 "crate-parallel" (modules in crates are read in parallel) reading threads. As a result, the readout time is reduced by 4 times: 40 msec down to 10 msec. With improved performance, it is expected to achieve higher background suppression for CANDLES experiment. Moreover, for energy calibration, "event-parallel" reading process (events are read in parallel) is also introduced to reduce measurement time. Abstract

We evaluate the spreading width for the |$\alpha$| + |$^{40}$| Ca cluster resonance from the optical potential used in |$\alpha$| elastic scattering, which is determined so as to reproduce the differential cross section precisely. The spreading width calculated here represents the decay of the |$\alpha$| + |$^{40}$| Ca resonances into more complicated states. The conversion of the optical potential into the spreading width is achieved by the absorbing boundary condition (ABC) method. The spreading width is derived by comparing the ABC calculation with and without the imaginary potential. We also estimate the upper value of the decay width of the |$\alpha$| + |$^{40}$| Ca resonance into the compound nuclear state. From the results of the widths, the branching ratios decaying into various states are calculated. We have found that the dissociation strength shifts to the lower-energy region by the effect of the spreading width. A total of 66 knees from 45 patients (mean ± standard deviation age: 70.3 ± 7.5 years) met the selection criteria, which had been employed cementless fixation of all parts and at least 3 years of postoperative follow-up duration. Clinical evaluations included range of motion, conventional knee score, function score, postoperative complications, and revision. For radiological evaluations, the bone contact surface of each implant was divided into 7 zones for tibial component and 2 zones for patellar component. Each region was examined immediately after surgery, at 6 and 12 months, and then every year afterwards.Results: The mean observation period of 45 subjects was 4.2 years. Adequate fixation of tibial components was maintained during follow-up, although the patellar components of 2 knees required revision after repeated falls. No loosening was observed in any implants. The initial gap in tibial components disappeared in all knees, and a reactive line remained in 4 knees. There were no revisions, except for 2 cases, which were ascribed to patellar component fracture caused by repeated falls.Conclusion: Cementless posterior-stabilized trabecular metal TKA appears to be a good surgical option. However, conventional devices are expensive for routine use and cannot confirm whether the medication was administered. We aimed to determine, in a pilot and feasibility study, the impact of introducing a new medication support device, the Pletaal Assist System®, to monitor and improve cilostazol adherence for stroke prevention at an outpatient clinic.Patients and Methods: We assessed consecutive patients treated with cilostazol for > 3 months at our stroke outpatient clinic from January 2018 to March 2020. The adherence rate was assessed as follows: (the number of pills prescribed minus the number of remaining pills)/the number of pills prescribed. We compared the adherence rates before, during, and after Pletaal Assist System® usage, respectively.Results: Overall, 25 patients (median age, 68.5 years; range, 51– 86 years; male, 64%) were enrolled. All participants were prescribed cilostazol (100 mg) twice a day. There was no significant difference in the adherence rate among the three periods. However, in 10 patients with adherence rate below 100%, the adherence rate during Pletaal Assist System® usage was higher than before usage (99.5% vs 95%, p=0.04), and the rate after using the Pletaal Assist System® tended to be lower compared to the rate during usage (99.5% vs 96%, p=0.05).Conclusion: Our preliminary evidence suggest that the Pletaal Assist System® could further improve cilostazol adherence in outpatients with poor drug adherence and may reduce the risk of recurrent strokes by improving adherence of patients with a history of stroke.Keywords: medication adherence, antiplatelet drug, stroke, electronic medication packaging

The original and translated version of BNSS has thus far been shown to have adequate psychometric properties. This study aimed to examine internal consistency, inter-rater and test-retest reliability, discriminant and convergent validity, and factor structure of the Japanese version of BNSS.Patients and methods: The assessment was performed by 11 raters using interview videos of nine subjects. Reliability was calculated with Cronbach’s alpha for internal consistency and intra class correlation coefficient (ICC) for inter-rater reliability. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated to estimate the test-retest reliability. In addition to BNSS, Scale for assessment of negative symptoms (SANS) and scale for assessment of positive symptoms (SAPS) was obtained to assess the convergent and discriminant validity. However, recent studies have revealed a close association between bone marrow activity and endothelial maintenance. This study aimed to determine the association between elevated reticulocyte levels in conjunction with vigorous bone marrow activity and hypertension and atherosclerosis among the elderly.Study population and Methods: To determine the associations between reticulocyte levels and hypertension and atherosclerosis, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 2,098 elderly Japanese individuals, aged between 60 and 89 years, who had participated in an annual health check-up in 2014.Results: Of the total study population, 1,348 individuals were diagnosed with hypertension (systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg and/or having used antihypertensive medication), and 393 were diagnosed with atherosclerosis (carotid intima-media thickness ≥1.1 mm). Reticulocyte levels were found to be significantly positively associated with hypertension and inversely associated with atherosclerosis. Cardiovascular risk factor-adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for hypertension and atherosclerosis, when raised incrementally by 1 standard deviation to determine reticulocyte levels (5.5×104 cells/μL for men and 5.0×104 cells/μL for women), were 1.12 (1.01, 1.25) and 0.83 (0.72, 0.94), respectively.Conclusion: Along with established cardiovascular risk factors, reticulocyte levels in elderly Japanese individuals were found to be positively associated with hypertension and inversely associated with atherosclerosis. Participants in this study were patients with glaucoma who were scheduled to receive any type of PGTFC for the first time. The participants answered a questionnaire on the day of PGTFC introduction and again at a return visit 4–6 weeks after PGTFC introduction. The physicians in charge were asked to complete a separate questionnaire on the day of PGTFC introduction. One of two leaflets was randomly delivered to each participant before the description of the PGTFC. One leaflet explained how to correctly instill the eye drops, and the other explained the clinical meaning of intraocular pressure reduction in addition to explaining how to correctly instill the eye drops. Nonadherence was defined as forgetting to instill the eye drops one or more times during the week before the return visit.Results: In total, 3,597 patients (age, 68.4±12.2 years) met the study protocol requirements. 1. This study elucidated the last-male sperm precedence (LMSP) mechanism in chickens by examining replacement in storage tubules (SSTs) after multiple artificial inseminations (AI) and the effects of seminal plasma (SP) and male breed on sperm replacement in SSTs. 2. Hens were artificially inseminated with fluorescent dye-labelled spermatozoa from White Leghorn (WL) chickens. Secondary AI was conducted 3 d later with sperm labelled with different nuclear fluorescent dye. Percentage of first and second inseminated sperm in SSTs and their logarithmic odds were calculated. The effect of SP on LMSP was examined using (1) Lake's solution-washed sperm before second insemination, and (2) SP injected continuously after first insemination. Effect of breed difference on sperm replacement was investigated using Barred Plymouth Rock (BP) sperm. 3. Successive WL-sperm inseminations at three-day intervals caused > 70% stored sperm replacement in SSTs. Although SP removal from sperm from second insemination significantly decreased replacement, its intra-vaginal injection did not affect release. Secondary insemination using BP sperm significantly increased replacement. 4. Sperm replacement is a major factor favouring LMSP in domestic chickens. Two fluorescent staining of sperm, and intra-vaginal multiple AI technique have enabled visualisation, differentiation, and quantification of multiple inseminated sperm stored in the SSTs.
