North Africa is the largest source of mineral dust on Earth, which has multiple impacts on the climate system; however, our understanding of decadal to centennial changes in African dust emissions over the last few millennia is limited. Here, we present a high-resolution multiproxy analysis of sediment core from high-elevation lake Bastani, in Corsica Island to reconstruct past African dust inputs to the Western Mediterranean area over the last 3150 yrs cal BP. Clay Mineralogy and geochemical data allows us to identify that terrigenous fluxes are almost exclusively related to atmospheric dust deposition from the West and North Sahara over this period, which is consistent with current observations. High resolution geochemical contents provide a reliable proxy of Saharan dust inputs with millennial to centennial scale variations. Millennial variations have been correlated to the long term southward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) with an increase of dust input since 1070 yrs cal BP. This correlation suggests a strong link with ITCZ and could reflect the increased availability of dust sources to be mobilized with an increase in wind and a decrease in precipitation over West and North Africa. For centennial to decadal variations, wavelet analyses show that since 1070 yr cal BP, NAO is the main climatic forcing with an increase of Saharan dust input during positive phase, as suggested by previous study over the last decades. However, when ITCZ is in a northern position, before 1070 yr cal BP, wavelet analyses indicate that total solar irradiance (TSI) is the main forcing factor, with an increase of African dust input during low TSI. With climate reanalysis over the instrumental era, during low TSI we observe a significant negative anomaly in pressure over Africa which is known to increase the dust transport. These two climatic forcing factors (NAO, TSI) modulate Saharan dust inputs to the Mediterranean area at centennial timescale through changes in wind and transport pathways.

International audience; Time-series bathymetric data acquired from 1967 to 2011 are used to evaluate the morphological evolution of the continental shelf and upper continental slope off the city of Nice (SE France, Ligurian Sea). Mapping in water depths of 0–300 m was undertaken to identify the changing morphology of landslide scars and their erosive chutes. Quantitative Digital Terrain Model (DTM) comparisons reveal areas of erosion and deposition over intervals of 5–8 years. Sediment remobilization events on the upper slope (above depths of 200 m) are frequent and significant; landslide scars with volumes > 25,000 m3 can occur with frequencies of < 8 years. Shelf break retreat toward the coastline can reach 60 m over 7–8 years where the continental shelf is wider (> 200 m). Periods of quiescence (1980–1990 and 2006–2011) are seen to alternate with periods when rapid retrogressive failure increase sediment volumes eroded from the upper slope-shelf transition by an order of magnitude (1999–2006). Temporal variations in landslide activity were correlated to several potential triggering factors that individually would not induce failures, including earthquake activity, rapid deposition of fine-grained sediments on a steep slope, and rainfall leading to fresh groundwater circulation below the shelf. This 4D bathymetric study suggests that over the last 50 years the most important factor triggering landslides offshore Nice is overpressure due to freshwater outflows.

International audience; A smart city must be equipped with efficient and interconnected transportation. Unfortunately, economic or operational reasons for creating an infrastructure sometimes compete with imperatives of natural hazards. The case of Nice Cote d'Azur airport is an interesting example. As air traffic increased, the airport has been progressively extended. The largest extension occurred between 1975 and 1979 when a large amount of backfill material has been accumulated on the continental shelf to reclaim land and create new tracks. In October 1979, a submarine landslide destroyed part of a seawall under construction and killed 10 people. This landslide was associated with a tsunami wave that swept the coast from Menton to Antibes: the damage was significant but much less than if it had occurred in summer during the tourist season. This disaster stopped all projects in the area for 40 years. However, recently, development projects have again been mentioned (information relayed by the press) with, in particular, the idea of a new port near the airport, able to accommodate ferries.For several years now, scientists have been working on the area to qualify natural hazard. Their results show that the airport tracks are subsiding [1] and that the surrounding offshore area is subject to recurrent small landslides [2], while geotechnical studies point to its unstable nature [3]. Recently, a seismological sensor installed under the sea during two years has recorded small local earthquakes. Our analysis of the signals revels a strong amplification effect of seismic waves related with the presence of a thick layer of sediments. Likewise, a future larger earthquake would also be amplified in this area, accentuating the potential for a significant submarine landslide. A domino effect is therefore to be feared: an earthquake, a landslide, a tsunami and maybe the only major local airport unable to operate properly in a time of crisis.A smart city should be a safe and resilient city that takes into account the contributions of all its stakeholders, including scientists. River deltas are dynamic coastal systems and their evolutions are closely monitored as it often concentrates vital natural resources for the surrounding areas. Many deltas worldwide experience subsidence due to geological processes (sediment loading and compaction) or human activities (groundwater or hydrocarbon extraction, land reclamation). This causes shoreline erosion or wetland loss which represent serious issues for the population. In this study we investigate the dynamic of the Var delta (France) where reclaimed lands over sea have been built to host the Nice côte d'Azur airport (NCA). Actually, the stability of this infrastructure is a permanent concern since, in 1979, a newly built extension of the runway platform collapsed in the sea, causing important damages. The project of land extension stopped, but the present airport platform is still located on reclaimed land. Factors that can trigger such catastrophic landslide are thought to be linked to the delta activity and the artificial airport platform load. We used, therefore, Envisat InSAR data to measure accurately the ground deformation of the area that includes the Var delta and NCA airport. Combining data from ascending and descending orbits, we estimated the east–west and vertical components of the deformation and obtained very accurate displacement rate (with a 1σ error of 0.25 mm yr−1). We found that nearly all the deformation is vertical and impacts the whole Var delta. The Var valley subsides at a very low rate (0.5–1 mm yr−1) but downstream the subsidence rate increases and a clear jump is observed at the transition with the reclaimed lands (1–2 mm yr−1). On average, the reclaimed lands subside at 3 mm yr−1. Since the subsidence rate increases in correlation with the sediment thickness, we interpret it as the compaction of the delta quaternary sedimentary wedge. In addition, three areas subside faster (between 5 and 10 mm yr−1), with one calling for more attention as it is the largest and overlooks the steep Var canyon. The progressive increase of subsidence rates toward the sea also suggests that the underwater parts of the margins could subside at rates well above 10 mm yr−1.

Small-scale landslides lead to a retrogressive evolution of the continental shelf/upper slope transition but their frequency, size and impact are not well known. Mapping was undertaken to identify the morphology of landslide scarps and the location of the shelfbreak. Map comparisons were performed using ArcGIS “raster calculator”. Sediment remobilization on the upper slope (up to depths of 200 m) is fast and significant; landslide scars with volumes greater than 25,000 m3 can appear with a frequency less than 8 years. Shelfbreak migration toward the coastline can reach rates of 60 m over 7–8 years where the continental shelf is over 200 m wide. Furthermore, this quantitative analysis highlights alternations between periods of strongly erosive events and sedimentation periods. On the upper slope, eroded volumes can be multiplied by 10 during periods of enhanced landslide patterns (1999–2006). Such cycle-like landslide activity raises the issue of the triggering processes. On the Nice continental slope thick poorly consolidated beds rapidly deposited on a steep slope, earthquakes and rainfall leading to fresh water circulation below the shelf were identified as potential triggers. Our 4D bathymetric study suggests that over the last 20 years the greatest impacting factor may be freshwater outflows.
