MycoBank number: MB 845348 Etymology: The name reflects the hyphomycetous morph phylogenetically related to Capnodium Saprobic on living and decaying branches. Sexual morph: not observed. Asexual morph: on the natural substrate, colonies effuse, hairy, black. Mycelium immersed and superficial, forming dark brown conidiomata. Conidiomata synnematous, erect, subcylindrical, dark brown to black, with conidiogenous cells distributed mostly laterally, mainly towards the upper half of the synnemata. Conidiophores macronematous, simple, dark brown. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, cylindrical, integrated, determinate, and smooth. MycoBank number: MB 845350 Etymology: Named after Sichuan Province where it was collected Saprobic on living and decaying branches of an unidentified bamboo. Sexual morph: not observed. Asexual morph: hyphomycetous. Colonies on the natural substrate effuse, hairy, black, developing on the upper side of branches of the host. Mycelium immersed and superficial, forming dark brown stromata. Conidiomata synnematous, erect, subcylindrical, dark brown to black, 980–1500 µm tall, 15.5–24 µm wide at the apex, 30–50 µm wide at the base, with conidiogenous cells distributed mostly towards the upper half of the synnemata. Conidiophores macronematous, simple, dark brown, smooth to verruculose 900–1300 × 2–5 µm. Conidiogenous cells mostly lateral, monoblastic, (sub)cylindrical, integrated, determinate, smooth, 2–5 × 2–4 µm. Conidia subcylindrical to fusiform, straight to slightly curved or sigmoid, dark brown, verrucose, with an obtuse apex and a truncate base, dark brown at maturity, 38.5–51 × 10–15 µm (x̅ = 44 × 11.9 µm), with up to 8 transverse septa, conidial secession schizolytic. Germination occurs from the apical cell of the conidia. Culture characteristics: Colonies on PDA slow growing reaching 2 cm diam. in 3 weeks, irregular, superficial to erumpent, black, raised centrally and wrinkled, with an undulate margin, reverse black. Material examined: CHINA, Sichuan Province, Chengdu city, Bai Yun Gou, on dead branches of Bambusaceae, 27 September 2021, 30°47.52′ N, 103°24.19′ E, elev.: 990 m. Lu Z-H, HUEST 22.0031 (HKAS 124021, holotype), ex-type living culture CGMCC 3.23573 = UESTCC 22.0031. Notes: In BLASTn searches with the ITS sequence of this fungus, the closest hits were Polychaeton citri (strain CBS 116435, GenBank OM238161; Identities = 568 / 596 (95 %), 9 gaps (1 %)), Conidiocarpus caucasicus (voucher UBCF23755, GenBank KF263962; Identities = 535 / 564 (95 %), 9 gaps (1 %)), and Capnodium sp. (strain TMS - 2011, GenBank HQ631045; Identities = 532 / 563 (94 %), 8 gaps (1 %)). Based on morphology and sequence data, Hyphocapnodia is clearly distinct from the other members of the Capnodiaceae. In vitro, this fungus showed a remarkably different morphology, characterized by the absence of synnemata and micronematous conidiophores giving rise to conidia 55–132 × 9–16 µm (x̅ = 89.9 × 12.5 µm, n =16), which often appeared sinuous and showed up to 14 septa (mostly 5–10). Hyphocapnodia morphologically resembles Phaeoisaria (Pleurotheciaceae), Dokmaia (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis) and Neosporidesmium (Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis) with its unbranched conidiophores forming distinct synnematal conidiomata (De Hoog & Papendorf 1976, Promputtha et al. 2003, Verma et al. 2021). However, these genera are phylogenetically distant from our new genus.The new genus has relatively close phylogenetic proximity to the Capnodium species. However, the asexual of these genera is distinct. Hyphocapnodia has synnematal conidiomata, whereas Capnodium is characterized by pycnidial conidiomata (Abdollahzadeh et al. 2020). The present study introduces seven new species, one new combination, one new variety and several interesting taxonomical notes and/or geographical records. Most of the new taxa are Ascomycetes, but the study also includes a new variety of a Basidiomycete. Novel species include Gyromitra khansprurensis (Discinaceae, Pezizales, Pezizomycetes) from Pakistan growing near Cedrus deoadara and Paramyrothecium guiyangense and Paramyrothecium verruridum (Stachybotriaceae, Hypocreales, Sordariomycetes) both isolated from soil in China. New species from South Africa are Sclerostagonospora elegiae on calm litter of Elegia equisetacea, Sclerostagonospora fusiformis on culm litter of Thamnochortus spicigerus, Sclerostagonospora pinguis on culm litter of Cannomois virgata and Sclerostagonospora sulcata on culm litter of Ischyrolepis subverticellata (Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes). Hapalocystis berkeleyi var. kickxii with its basionym Hypoxylon kickxii is shown to be a taxon on species level and thus recombined as Hapalocystis kickxii (Sydowiellaceae, Diaporthales, Sordariomycetes), and it is lecto- and epitypified. The new variety Pluteus romellii var. luteoalbus (Pluteaceae, Agaricales, Agaricomycetes) growing on a mossy fallen stem of a deciduous tree is described from Czech Republic. Cortinarius scaurocaninus (Cortinariaceae, Agaricales, Agaricomycetes) is new for Austria, Humicola grisea (Chaetomiaceae, Sordariales, Sordariomycetes) is an interesting new record for Chile. Two taxa are reported as new for Turkey: the lichenicolous fungus Opegrapha parasitica (Opegraphaceae, Arthoniales, Arthoniomycetes) growing partly immersed in the thallus of Aspicilia and the lichen Rinodina zwackhiana (Physciaceae, Teloschistales, Lecanoromycetes) from calcareous rock. Finally, Xerula strigosa (Physalacriaceae, Agaricales, Agaricomycetes), described from China, is confirmed to be present also in Pakistan.

The present study introduces two new genera, 14 new species, five new combinations and 12 interesting host and/or geographical records. A majority of the fungi are Ascomycetes, but the study also includes a Basidiomycete, Xerocomellus fulvus described from Pakistan. Under single name nomenclature Zeuctomorpha arecae is reduced to synonymy under Acroconidiellina arecae (Sympoventuriaceae, Venturiales, Dothideomycetes). Based on morphology and phylogenetic affinities, Wojnowicia dactylidis, W. lonicerae and W. spartii are moved to the genus Wojnowiciella (Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) and Zalerion arboricola is now accommodated in Lophium (Mytilinidiaceae, Mytilinidiales, Dothideomycetes). Novel genera include: Alfariacladiella gen. nov. (Stachybotryaceae, Hypocreales, Sordariomycetes) with A. spartii sp. nov. as type species, and Calvolachnella gen. nov. (Chaetosphaeriales, Sordariomycetes) to accommodate Calvolachnella guaviyuensis comb. nov., previously included in Pseudolachnella. Novel species include: Castanediella hyalopenicillata from leaf litter (USA), C. malaysiana on Eucalyptus brassiana (Malaysia) (Xylariales, Sordariomycetes), Morchella pakistanica (Morchellaceae, Pezizales, Pezizomycetes) on loamy soil (Pakistan), Muriphaeosphaeria viburni (Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) on twigs of Viburnum lantana (Serbia), Phyllosticta aucubae-japonicae (Phyllostictaceae, Botryosphaeriales, Dothideomycetes) on fruit of Aucuba japonica (Japan), Wojnowiciella leptocarpi (Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) on stems of Leptocarpus sp. (Australia), and Xylomelasma shoalensis (Sordariomycetes) on a dead branch (USA). New species from Germany include: Neosetophoma lunariae and Phaeosphaeria lunariae (Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) on seeds of Lunaria annua, Patellaria quercus (Patellariaceae, Patellariales, Dothideomycetes) on twigs of Quercus sp., Rhinocladiella coryli on stems of Corylus avellana and Rhinocladiella quercus (Herpotrichiellaceae, Chaetothyriales, Eurotiomycetes) on twigs of Quercus robur. Ramularia eucalypti (Mycosphaerellaceae, Capnodiales, Dothideomycetes) is reported on leaves of Citrus maxima from Italy, Beltrania rhombica (Beltraniaceae, Xylariales, Sordariomycetes) on leaves of Acacia sp. from Malaysia and Myrmecridium spartii (Myrmecridiaceae, Myrmecridiales, Sodariomycetes) on Sarothamnus scoparius from Serbia. New reports from Australia include: Dothiora ceratoniae (Dothideaceae, Dothideales, Dothideomycetes) on leaves of Eucalyptus sp., Readeriella dimorphospora (Teratosphaeriaceae, Capnodiales, Dothideomycetes) on Eucalyptus sp., Vermiculariopsiella dichapetali (Sordariomycetes) on leaves of Grevillea sp. and Acacia glaucoptera, and Verrucoconiothyrium nitidae (Montagnulaceae, Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes), on leaves of Acacia leprosa var. graveolens. New reports from La Reunion (France) include: Botryosphaeria agaves (Botryosphaeriaceae, Botryosphaeriales, Dothideomycetes) on branches of Agave sp., Chrysofolia colombiana (Cryphonectriaceae, Diaporthales, Sordariomycetes) on leaves of Syzygium jambos, Colletotrichum karstii (Glomerellaceae, Glomerellales, Sordariomycetes) on leaves of Acacia heterophylla, Epicoccum sorghinum (Didymellaceae, Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) on leaves of Paspalum sp. and Helminthosporium velutinum (Massarinaceae, Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) on branches of Stoebia sp. Finally, an epitype is designated for Tracylla aristata (Sordariomycetes) on Eucalyptus regnans (Australia).
