Abstract

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. Selected performance studies for particular physics measurements at MPD are presented and discussed in the context of existing data and theoretical expectations., Comment: 53 pages, 68 figures, submitted as a Review article to EPJA

Abstract

It is shown that production of low-mass $e^+e^-$-pairs in ultraperipheral nuclear collisions is enhanced due to the Sommerfeld-Gamow-Sakharov (SGS) factor. This effect is especially strong near the threshold of creation of unbound $e^+e^-$-pairs with low masses in the two-photon fusion. Coulomb attraction of the non-relativistic components of such pairs may lead to the increased intensity of 511 keV photons. It can be recorded at the NICA collider and has some astrophysical implications. The analogous effect can be observed at LHC in dilepton production., Comment: 10 p., 3 Figs

Abstract

The final state interactions in $K^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^0\pi^0$ decays are considered using the methods of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. We show how to take into account the largest electromagnetic effects in the analysis of experimental data, using the amplitudes calculated earlier. We propose the relevant expressions for amplitude corrections valid both above and below the two charged pion production threshold $M_{\pi^0\pi^0}=2m_{\pi^\pm}$, including the average effect for the threshold bin. These formulae can be used in the procedure of pion scattering lengths measurement from $M_{\pi^0\pi^0}$ spectrum., Comment: 5 pages

Abstract

It is proposed to install an experimental setup in the fixed-target hall of the Nuclotron with the final goal to perform a research program focused on the production of strange matter in heavyion collisions at beam energies between 2 and 6 A GeV. The basic setup will comprise a large acceptance dipole magnet with inner tracking detector modules based on double-sided Silicon micro-strip sensors and GEMs. The outer tracking will be based on the drift chambers and straw tube detector. Particle identification will be based on the time-of-flight measurements. This setup will be sufficient perform a comprehensive study of strangeness production in heavy-ion collisions, including multi-strange hyperons, multi-strange hypernuclei, and exotic multi-strange heavy objects. These pioneering measurements would provide the first data on the production of these particles in heavy-ion collisions at Nuclotron beam energies, and would open an avenue to explore the third (strangeness) axis of the nuclear chart. The extension of the experimental program is related with the study of in-medium effects for vector mesons decaying in hadronic modes. The studies of the NN and NA reactions for the reference is assumed.

Abstract

We report the results from a study of the full sample of ~ 6.031 10^7 K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays recorded by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS. As first observed in this experiment, the pi0 pi0 invariant mass M00 distribution shows a cusp-like anomaly in the region around M00 = 2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. This anomaly has been interpreted as an effect due mainly to the final state charge exchange scattering process pi+ pi- -> p0 p0 in K+- -> pi+- pi+ pi- decay. Fits to the M00 distribution using two different theoretical formulations provide the presently most precise determination of (a0 - a2), the difference between the pi pi S-wave scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states. Higher-order pi pi rescattering terms, included in the two formulations, allow also an independent, though less precise, determination of a2., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

A measurement of the direct CP violating charge asymmetries of the Dalitz plot linear slopes $A_g=(g^+-g^-)/(g^++g^-)$ in $K^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^+\pi^-$ and $K^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^0\pi^0$ decays by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN SPS is presented. A new technique of asymmetry measurement involving simultaneous $K^+$ and $K^-$ beams and a large data sample collected allowed a result of an unprecedented precision. The charge asymmetries were measured to be $A^c_g=(-1.5\pm2.2)\times10^{-4}$ with $3.11\times 10^9$ $K^{\pm}\to\pi^\pm\pi^+\pi^-$ decays, and $A^n_g=(1.8\pm1.8)\times10^{-4}$ with $9.13\times 10^7$ $K^{\pm}\to\pi^\pm\pi^0\pi^0$ decays. Abstract

A total of 235 698 Xi0 -> Lambda pi0 and 21 527 anti-Xi0 -> anti-Lambda pi0 decays were selected from data obtained by the NA48/1 experiment at CERN. From this sample, the lifetime of the Xi0 hyperon was measured to be (3.065 +- 0.012(stat) +- 0.014(syst)) x 10^-10 s. This result is about two standard deviations above the world average and an order of magnitude more precise than the previous best measurement. With the same data sample, we have measured the ratio of anti-Xi0 and Xi0 fluxes in proton collisions at 400 GeV/c on a beryllium target.

Abstract

The decay rate of $K_{S} \to \pi e \nu$ relative to the rate of $K_{L} \to \pi e \nu$ has been measured by the NA48 collaboration in a neutral Kaon beam originating from 400 GeV proton-Be interactions at the CERN SPS. The result is $0.993 \pm 0.026_{stat} \pm 0.022_{syst}$, compatible with 1 in agreement with the Standard Model prediction at tree level. It implies $BR(K_{S} \to\pi e \nu) = (7.05 \pm 0.18_{stat.} \pm 0.16_{syst.}) \times 10^{-4}$.

Abstract

22 pages 7 figures; This paper reports on a new high precision measurement of the form factors of the K_{L}\to \pi^{\pm} \mu^{\mp} \nu_{\mu} decay. The data sample of about 2.3$\times 10^{6}$ events was recorded in 1999 by the NA48 experiment at CERN. Studying the Dalitz plot density we measured a linear, $\lambda^{'}_{+} = (20.5\pm 2.2_{stat} \pm 2.4_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$, and a quadratic, $\lambda^{''}_{+} = (2.6\pm 0.9_{stat} \pm 1.0_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ term in the power expansion of the vector form factor. No evidence was found for a second order term for the scalar form factor; the linear slope was determined to be $\lambda_{0} = (9.5\pm 1.1_{stat} \pm 0.8_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$. Using a linear fit our results were: $\lambda_{+} = (26.7\pm 0.6_{stat} \pm 0.8_{syst} )\times 10^{-3}$ and, $\lambda_{0} = (11.7\pm 0.7_{stat} \pm 1.0_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$. A pole fit of the form factors yields: $m_V = (905 \pm 9_{stat} \pm 17_{syst})$ MeV/c$^2$ and $m_S = (1400 \pm 46_{stat} \pm 53_{syst})$ MeV/c$^2$.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the ratio of the decay rates $\Gamma (K_L \rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-) / \Gamma(K_L \rightarrow\pi^{\pm}e^{\mp}\nu)$, denoted as $\Gamma_{K2\pi}/\Gamma_{Ke3}$. The analysis is based on data taken during a dedicated run in 1999 by the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS. Using a sample of 47000 $K_{2\pi}$ and five million $K_{e3}$ decays, we find $\Gamma_{K2\pi}/\Gamma_{Ke3} = (4.835 \pm 0.022_{stat.} \pm 0.016_{syst.}) \times 10^{-3}$. From this we derive the branching ratio of the CP violating decay $K_L \rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-$ and the CP violation parameter $|\eta_{+-}|$. Excluding the CP conserving direct photon emission component $K_L \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-\gamma$, we obtain the results BR$(K_L \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-) = (1.941 \pm 0.019) \times 10^{-3}$ and $|\eta_{+-}| = (2.223 \pm 0.012) \times 10^{-3}$.

Abstract

From 56 days of data taking in 2002, the NA48/1 experiment observed 6316 $\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} e^{-} \overline{\nu}_{e}$ candidates (with the subsequent $\Sigma^{+} \rightarrow p \pi^{0}$ decay) and 555 $\overline{\Xi^{0}}\rightarrow \overline{\Sigma^{+}} e^{+} \nu_{e}$ candidates with background contamination of $215 \pm 44$ and $136 \pm 8$ events, respectively. From these samples, the branching ratios BR($\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} e^{-} \overline{\nu}_{e})=(2.51 \pm0.03_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm 0.09_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-4}$ and BR($\overline{\Xi^{0}}\rightarrow \overline{\Sigma^{+}} e^{+} \nu_{e})= (2.55 \pm 0.12_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm{0.10}_{\mathrm{syst}}) \times 10^{-4}$ were measured allowing the determination of the CKM matrix element $|V_{\mathrm{us}}| = 0.209^{+0.023}_{-0.028}$. Using the Particle Data Group average for $|V_{\mathrm{us}}|$ obtained in semileptonic kaon decays, we measured the ratio $g_1/f_1 = 1.20 \pm 0.05$ of the axial-vector to vector form factors.

Abstract

A search for direct CP-violation in $K^{\pm}\rightarrow \pi^\pm \pi^0 \pi^0$ decay based on 47.14 million events has been performed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS. The asymmetry in the Dalitz plot linear slopes $A_g = ( g^+ -g^- ) / ( g^+ + g^- )$ is measured to be $A_g = (1.8 \pm 2.6) \cdot10^{-4}$. The design of the experiment and the method of analysis provide good control of instrumental charge asymmetries in this measurement. The precision of the result is limited by statistics and is almost one order of magnitude better than that of previous measurements by other experiments.

Abstract

The NA48 collaboration has measured the amplitude of the CP-conserving component of the decay $K^{0}_{S} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ relative to $K^{0}_{L} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$. For the characteristic parameter $\lambda$, the values Re $\lambda = 0.038 \pm 0.010$ and Im $\lambda = - 0.013 \pm 0.007$ have been extracted. These values agree with earlier measurements and with theoretical predictions from chiral perturbation theory.

Abstract

We report the results from a study of $\sim 2.3 \times 10^{7} K^{\pm} \to \pi^{\pm}\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ decays recorded by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, showing an anomaly in the $\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ invariant mass ($M_{00}$) distribution in the region around $M_{00} = 2m_{+}$, where $m_{+}$ is the charged pion mass. This anomaly, never observed in previous experiments, can be interpreted as an effect due mainly to the final state charge exchange scattering process $\pi^{+}\pi^{-} \to \pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ in $K^{\pm} \to \pi^{\pm}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decay. It provides a precise determination of $a_{0} - a_{2}$, the difference between the $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths in the isospin $I=0$ and $I=2$ states. A best fit to a rescattering model corrected for isospin symmetry breaking gives $(a_{0} − a_{2})m_{+} = 0.268 \pm 0.010$( stat. ) $\pm 0.004 $(syst.), with additional external uncertainties of $\pm 0.013$ from branching ratio and theoretical uncertainties. If the correlation between $a_{0}$ and $a_{2}$ predicted by chiral symmetry is taken into account, this result becomes $(a_{0} − a_{2})m_{+} = 0.264 \pm 0.006$( stat.) $\pm 0.004$( syst.) $\pm 0. 013$(ext).

Abstract

Using data taken during the year 2000 with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS, a search for the CP violation decay $K_{S} \to 3\pi^{0}$ has been performed. From a fit to the lifetime distribution of about 4.9 million reconstructed $K^{0}/\bar{K^{0}} \to 3\pi^{0}$ decays, the CP violationg amplitude $\eta_{000} = A(K_{S} \to 3\pi^{0})/A(K_{L} \to 3\pi^{0})$ has been found to be $\Re(\eta_{000}) = -0.002 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.015$ and Im$(\eta_{000}) -0.003 \pm 0.0013 \pm 0.017$. This corresponds to an upper limit on the branching fraction of Br($K_{S} \to 3\pi^{0}) < 7.4 \times 10^{-7}$ at 90% confidence level. The result is used to improve knowledge of $\Re(\epsilon)$ and the CPT violating quantity Im($\delta$) via the Bell-Steinberger relation.

Abstract

In data taken with the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS in 1999, 730 candidates of the weak radiative hyperon decay $\Xi^{0} \to \Lambda\gamma$ have been found with an estimated background of $58 \pm 8$ events. From these events the $\Xi^{0} \to \Lambda\gamma$ decay asymmetry has been determined to $\alpha(\Xi^{0} \to \Lambda\gamma) = -0.78 \pm 0.18_{stat} \pm 0.06_{syst}$, which is the first evidence of a decay asymmetry in $\Xi^{0} \to \Lambda\gamma$. The branching fraction of the decay has been measured to be $Br(\Xi^{0} \to \Lambda\gamma) = (1.16 \pm 0.05_{stat} \pm 0.06_{syst}) \times 10^{-3}$.

Abstract

A search for the decay $K_{S} \rightarrow \pi^0 e^{+}e^{-}$ has been made by the NA48/1 experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. Using data collected during 89 days in 2002 with a high-intensity $K_{S}$ beam, 7 events were found with a background of 0.15 events. The branching fraction $BR(K_{S} \rightarrow \pi^0 e^{+}e^{-}, m_{ee} > 0.165$ GeV/c$^{2}) = (3.0^{+1.5}_{-1.2(stat)} \pm 0.2(syst)) \times 10^{-9}$ has been measured. Using a vector matrix element and a form factor equal to one, the measurement gives $BR(K_{S} \rightarrow \pi^0 e^{+}e^{-}) = (5.8^{+2.9}_{-2.4}) \times 10^{-9}$.

Abstract

The $K_{L} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ and $K_{S} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ decay modes have been studied in detail using the NA48 detector at CERN SPS. Based on the data collected during the 1998 and 1999 run periods, a sample of 1162 $K_{L} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ candidates has been observed with an expected background level of 36.9 events, yielding the branching ratio measurement $BR(K_{L} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-})=(3.08 \pm 0.20) \times 10^{-7}$. The distribution of events in the sin$\phi$cos$\phi$ variable, where $\phi$ is the angle between the $\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ and the $e^{+}e^{-}$ decay planes in the kaon centre of mass, is found to exhibit a large CP-violating asymmetry with the value $A_{\phi}(14.2 \pm3.6)$%. For the $K_{S} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ decay channel, 621 candidates have been identified in the 1999 data sample with an estimated background contribution of 0.7 event. The corresponding branching ratio has been determined to be $BR(K_{S} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-})=(4.71 \pm 0.32) \times 10^{-5}$. The combined value of this measurement with the published 1998 result is $BR(K_{S} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-})=(4.69 \pm 0.30) \times 10^{-5}$. No asymmetry is observed in this decay mode. Our results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on a phenomenological description of radiative kaon decays. The form factor parameters a$_{1}$/a$_{2}$ and $\tilde{g}_{M1}$ in the $K_{L} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ direct emission process as well as the value of the $K^{0}$ charge radius have been extracted from the data.

Abstract

The $K_{S} \to \gamma\gamma$ decay rate has been measured with the NA48 detector using a high intensity short neutral beam from the CERN SPS. The measured branching ratio BR($K_{S}) \to \gamma\gamma = (2.78 \pm 0.06_{stat} \pm 0.04_{syst}) \times 10^{-6}$, obtained from 7461$\pm$172 $K_{S} \to \gamma\gamma$ events, is significantly higher than the $O(p^{4})$ prediction of Chiral Perturbation Theory. Using a $K_{L}$ beam the ratio $\Gamma(K_{L} \to \gamma\gamma)/ \Gamma(K_{L} \to \pi^{0}\pi^{0}\pi^{0}) = (2.81 \pm 0.01_{stat} \pm 0.02_{syst}) \times 10^{-3}$ has been measured.

Abstract

A search for the decay $K_{S} \to \pi^{0}e^{+}e^{-}$ has been made using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Abstract

A value of $(-6.1\pm 0.9_{stat}\pm 0.5_{syst}) \times 10^{-3}$ is obtained for the quadratic slope parameter $h$ in the $K_{L}\rightarrow 3\pi^{0}$ decay Dalitz plot at the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS. The result is based on $14.7\times 10^{6}$ fully reconstructed $K_{L}\rightarrow 3\pi^{0} \rightarrow 6\gamma$ decays. This is the most precise measurement of any of the Dalitz plot slope parameters in the charged and neutral kaon decays so far.

The decay rate of $K_{S} \to \gamma\gamma$ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of 149 $K_{S} \to \gamma\gamma$ events have been observed. The branching ratio is determined to be $(2.58 \pm 0.36(stat) \pm 0.22(sys)) \times10^{-6}$.

Abstract

Six events with the number of secondaries ranging from 250 to several thousands were registered by an installation consisting of a thin graphite target, above and under which are placed photolayers followed by the usual lead X-ray film and emulsion chambers. Data concerning the number of secondaries and their angular distribution are given. The variance of the angular distribution is compared with data obtained at accelerator energies.

Abstract

The measurement of the S-wave ππ scattering lengths is a fundamental test of the validity of Chiral Perturbation Theory. We report on the final NA48/2 result, based on the full statistics data set of more than one million reconstructed Ke4± decays. From these events we have determined the decay form factors and ππ scattering lengths a00 and a02. The result is the currently most precise measurement of the scattering lengths and is in excellent agreement with the predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
