Abstract

The dynamics of non-equilibrium closed quantum systems and their route to thermalization are of fundamental interest to several fields, from cosmology to particle physics. However, a comprehensive description of non-equilibrium phenomena still presents a significant challenge. In this work, we report the observation of distinct stages during the relaxation of the decaying turbulence in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Our findings show a direct particle cascade from low to high momenta, a consequence of the energy injection in the system, exhibiting a characteristic universal scaling. This stage is followed by an inverse particle cascade responsible for repopulating the previously depleted condensate. Both cascades can be explained through self-similar solutions provided by wave turbulence theory. These findings provide important insights into the relaxation stages of out-of-equilibrium quantum many-body systems.

Abstract

Recent progress in out-of-equilibrium closed quantum systems has significantly advanced the understanding of mechanisms behind their evolution towards thermalization. Notably, the concept of non-thermal fixed points (NTFPs) - responsible for the emergence of spatio-temporal universal scaling in far-from-equilibrium systems - has played a crucial role in both theoretical and experimental investigations. In this work, we introduce a differential equation that has the universal scaling associated with NTFPs as a solution. The advantage of working with a differential equation, rather than only with its solution, is that we can extract several insightful properties not necessarily present in the solution alone. How the differential equation is derived allows physical interpretation of the universal exponents in terms of the time dependence of the amplitude of the distributions and their momentum scaling. Employing two limiting cases of the equation, we determined the universal exponents related to the scaling using the distributions near just two momentum values. We established a solid agreement with previous investigations by validating this approach with three distinct physical systems. This consistency highlights the universal nature of scaling due to NTFPs and emphasizes the predictive capabilities of the proposed differential equation. Moreover, under specific conditions, the equation predicts a power-law related to the ratio of the two universal exponents, leading to implications concerning particle and energy transport. This suggests that the observed power-laws in far-from-equilibrium turbulent fluids could be related to the universal scaling due to NTFPs, potentially offering new insights into the study of turbulence., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We study the emergence of universal scaling in the time-evolving momentum distribution of a harmonically trapped three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate, parametrically driven to a turbulent state. We demonstrate that the out-of-equilibrium dynamics post excitation is described by a single function due to nearby non-thermal fixed points. The observed behavior connects the dynamics of a quantum turbulent state to several far-from-equilibrium phenomena. We present a controllable protocol to explore universality in such systems, obtaining scaling exponents that can serve as reference for future theoretical investigations. Our experimental results thus offer a promising route to investigate the complex dynamics of the quantum turbulent regime under a novel perspective., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The field of quantum turbulence is related to the manifestation of turbulence in quantum fluids, such as liquid helium and ultracold gases. The concept of turbulence in quantum systems was conceived more than 70 years ago by Onsager and Feynman, but the study of turbulent ultracold gases is very recent. Although it is a young field, it already provides new approaches to the problem of turbulence. We review the advances and present status, of both theory and experiments, concerning atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We present the difficulties of characterizing turbulence in trapped BECs, if compared to classical turbulence or turbulence in liquid helium. We summarize the challenges ahead, mostly related to the understanding of fundamental properties of quantum turbulence, including what is being done to investigate them., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

Turbulence is characterized by a large number of degrees of freedom, distributed over several length scales, that result into a disordered state of a fluid. The field of quantum turbulence deals with the manifestation of turbulence in quantum fluids, such as liquid helium and ultracold gases. We review, from both experimental and theoretical points of view, advances in quantum turbulence focusing on atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We also explore the similarities and differences between quantum and classical turbulence. Lastly, we present challenges and possible directions for the field. Abstract

This paper proposes a qualitative study exploring anomalous self and world-experiences in individuals with high levels of depersonalization traits. Depersonalization (DP) is a condition characterized by distressing feelings of being a detached, neutral and disembodied onlooker of one’s mental and bodily processes or even of reality itself (‘derealization’). Feelings of depersonalization are extremely common in the general population, yet under-acknowledged and under-examined. Our findings indicate the presence of a wide range of anomalous experiences traditionally understood to be core features of depersonalization, such as disembodiment and disrupted self-awareness. However, our results also indicate experiential features that are less highlighted in previous work, such as faster time perception and blurriness of the self/other boundaries which may play a key role in altering one’s sense of self and sense of presence in the world. Our qualitative study provides an in-depth examination of self-reported disturbances of one’s relatedness to one’s self and the world, thereby shedding further light on the nature of altered subjective experiences in DP. In doing so, this paper draws attention to key aspects yet overlooked that may prove valuable for potential diagnosis and therapy. We conclude by highlighting limitations of this study and a number of open questions that further work needs to address in the future, in order to better understand this condition and to improve the quality of life of those experiencing depersonalization.

Abstract

Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) are complex syndromes involving psychopathological, cognitive, and also motor symptoms as core features. A better understanding of how these symptoms mutually impact each other could translate into diagnostic, prognostic, and, eventually, treatment advancements. The present study aimed to: (1) estimate a network model of psychopathological, cognitive, and motor symptoms in SSD; (2) detect communities and explore the connectivity and relative importance of variables within the network; and (3) explore differences in subsample networks according to remission status. A sample of 1007 patients from a multisite cohort study was included in the analysis. We estimated a network of 43 nodes, including all the items from the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, a cognitive assessment battery and clinical ratings of extrapyramidal symptoms. Methodologies specific to network analysis were employed to address the study's aims. The estimated network for the total sample was densely interconnected and organized into 7 communities. Nodes related to insight, abstraction capacity, attention, and suspiciousness were the main bridges between network communities. The estimated network for the subgroup of patients in remission showed a sparser density and a different structure compared to the network of nonremitted patients. In conclusion, the present study conveys a detailed characterization of the interrelations between a set of core clinical elements of SSD. These results provide potential novel clues for clinical assessment and intervention.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for treatment of waste water from the explosive industries, such as ammonium nitrate / fuel oil (ANFO) type and emulsion explosives. Said process comprises precipitation with lime and carbonation with atmospheric CO 2 . This treatment reduces the organic content of the effluent from the explosive industries and simultaneously produces by-products with value-added. In addition, the process of the present invention enables the capture and collection of compounds present in the effluent obtained and their subsequent reuse, both in the explosive industries and in other industries where they are required. Thus, the present invention is in the technical field of waste water treatment, specifically of effluents from the explosives industry.

Abstract

Agroinfiltrated Nicotiana benthamiana is a flexible and scalable platform for recombinant protein (RP) production, but its great potential is hampered by plant proteases that degrade RPs. Here, we tested 29 candidate protease inhibitors (PIs) in agroinfiltrated N. benthamiana leaves for enhancing accumulation of three unrelated RPs: glycoenzyme α-Galactosidase; glycohormone erythropoietin (EPO); and IgG antibody VRC01. Of the previously described PIs enhancing RP accumulation, we found only cystatin SlCYS8 to be effective. We identified three additional new, unrelated PIs that enhance RP accumulation: N. benthamiana NbPR4, NbPot1 and human HsTIMP, which have been reported to inhibit cysteine, serine and metalloproteases, respectively. Remarkably, accumulation of all three RPs is enhanced by each PI similarly, suggesting that the mechanism of degradation of unrelated RPs follows a common pathway. Inhibitory functions HsTIMP and SlCYS8 are required to enhance RP accumulation, suggesting that their target proteases may degrade RPs. Different PIs additively enhance RP accumulation, but the effect of each PI is dose-dependent. Activity-based protein profiling (ABPP) revealed that the activities of papain-like Cys proteases (PLCPs), Ser hydrolases (SHs) or vacuolar processing enzymes (VPEs) in leaves are unaffected upon expression of the new PIs, whereas SlCYS8 expression specifically suppresses PLCP activity only. Quantitative proteomics indicates that the three new PIs affect agroinfiltrated tissues similarly and that they all increase immune responses. Abstract

Palladium (Pd)-based membranes have been studied for many years, regarding applications in production and purifi-cation of hydrogen. The reaction of water gas shift (CO+ H2O ↔ CO2 + H2), for example, can advantageously be conducted in a Pd-based membrane reactor, where hydrogen produced selectively permeates the membrane [1]. When hydrogen permeates with an infinite selectivity, its passage is governed by sorption-diffusion mechanism through the atomic struc-ture. Among all metals, palladium is the material that exhibits the highest atomic hydrogen permeability, resulting from the high capability in the catalytic dissociation of H2 molecules it in its metallic structure [2]. However, the use of pure palladi-um membranes has some limitations [3]. When palladium alloys such as Pd-Ag are used, the result is a homogeneous solid solution with a fcc structure [4,5]. This alloy prevents the formation of hybrid phases, allowing higher hydrogen permeation along with chemical and mechanical stability, reducing also the overall cost of raw material [2]., Patricia Pérez is grateful to Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) for the doctoral grant (reference: SFRH/BD/73673/2010). Abstract

The work presented in this report is part of the effort to define the landscape state and diversity indicator in the\ud frame of COM (2006) 508 “Development of agri-environmental indicators for monitoring the integration of\ud environmental concerns into the common agricultural policy”. The Communication classifies the indicators\ud according to their level of development, which, for the landscape indicator is “in need of substantial\ud improvements in order to become fully operational”. For this reason a full re-definition of the indicator has been\ud carried out, following the initial proposal presented in the frame of the IRENA operation (“Indicator Reporting on\ud the Integration of Environmental Concerns into Agricultural Policy”). The new proposal for the landscape state\ud and diversity indicator is structured in three components: the first concerns the degree of naturalness, the\ud second landscape structure, the third the societal appreciation of the rural landscape. While the first two\ud components rely on a strong bulk of existing literature, the development of the methodology has made evident\ud the need for further analysis of the third component, which is based on a newly proposed top-down approach.\ud This report presents an in-depth analysis of such component of the indicator, and the effort to include a social\ud dimension in large scale landscape assessment.

Abstract

Pd-Ag based membranes, self-supported and supported on porous α-Al2O3, have been studied for hydrogen selective separation. In the case of the self-supported membranes the Pd-Ag permeator tube was prepared by cold-rolling and diffusion welding technique; magnetron sputtering technique was employed for the synthesis of the membrane supported on porous α-Al2O3. The results have shown that the self supported Pd-Ag membranes are infinitively H2-selective and the H2-permeation rate through this membrane is in accordance with Sieverts´ law for detect-free meal membranes; hence, an ultra-pure hydrogen stream can be obtained. The Pd-Ag membrane supported on porous α-Al2O3 is not completely selective towards H2, but requires much less metal since it is much thinner (ca. ~50 vs. 1 µm). In this work, it was studied the water-gas shift on Pd-Ag membrane reactor, but it was also illustrated another application of palladium membranes, in the ethanol steam reforming. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2011-11-10 The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementing glutamine and nucleotides on growth performance and development intestinal morphology in broiler chicks. In the trial, 600 male broiler chicks distributed in randomized blocks in a 3x2 factorial arrangement (consisting of a uniform basal diet supplemented with: 0.0, 0.5 or 1.0% glutamine, and 0.0 or 0.04% nucleotides), for a total of 6 treatments with 25 birds each. Means of performance (weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion and mortality) were obtained 7, 21 and 42 days of age. At the end of the experiment 4 broilers per treatment were used to determine organs weight and development intestinal morphology. Glutamine supplementation (1%) improved the body weight, feed intake and feed conversion in the first week. Glutamine and nucleotides supplementation did not affect performance in broiler chicks in the period one to 21 and one to 42 days of age. In conclusion, it was demonstrated that feeding 1.0% glutamine improved growth performance of broiler birds at 21 days of age. Abstract

O Vírus da imunodeficiência humana (HIV) é um vírus envelopado e as proteínas do seu envelope, em especial a gp120, controlam os eventos necessários para a sua entrada em células suscetíveis. A Síndrome da Imunodeficiência Adquirida (AIDS) é a manifestação clínica da infecção por HIV. Apesar dos esforços globais de combate à AIDS, o número de portadores de HIV no mundo continua crescendo. O contato heterossexual é a principal forma de transmissão e tem acarretado no aumento alarmante do número de mulheres infectadas. Os microbicidas são medicações antimicrobianas capazes de prevenir a transmissão do HIV quando aplicadas na vagina ou reto antes da relação sexual, e surgiram como uma ferramenta adicional de combate à AIDS direcionada às mulheres. Cyanovirin-N (CV-N) é uma proteína candidata à microbicida capaz de inativar várias linhagens do HIV se ligando irreversivelmente à gp120 viral. A produção de CV-N, assim como de qualquer microbicida,para ser economicamente viável e suprir a demanda mundial deve ser alcançada em níveis muito altos. Dessa forma, plantas geneticamente modificadas oferecem um sistema adequado para a produção de CV-N. Neste trabalho, plantas de soja transgênicas para a expressão de CV-N sob o controle do promotor da ?-conglicinina ?` foram produzidas e a análise das sementes R1 mostrou que CV-N está acumulando a 6% do total de proteínas solúveis da semente, um nível significativamente alto quando comparado a outros trabalhos semelhantes.Adicionalmente, foi testado o sistema de expressão transiente de CV-N e CV-N mutada(Asn30Gln/Pro51Gly) em folhas de Nicotiana benthamiana, com três diferentes tipos de endereçamento celular. Os resultados demonstraram que todas as construções produziram CV-N capaz de se ligar à gp120, com níveis de expressão de aproximadamente 0,1%, sendo assim bastante inferiores aos observados em soja. Abstract

An integrated chemical engineering lab experiment is described in this paper. It makes use of a laminar-flow tubular reactor (LFTR) through consecutive lab sessions. In a first session (not described here), the pseudo first-order kinetic constant for the reaction between crystal violet and sodium hydroxide is determined at different temperatures in a batch reactor. Then a tracer experiment is used to characterize the flow, pattern in the LFTR, and finally the steady-state conversion of crystal violet in the reactor is measured. For computing the theoretical reactor conversion, students must use the previously collected kinetic and tracer data, in a concept-integration exercise. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code (Fluent) is also used to simulate both the tracer and the isothermal reaction experiments performed in the LFTR. A very good agreement is obtained between experimental and simulated results and both only differ slightly from the theoretical predictions. The use of the CFD program is particularly noteworthy. For instance, transient simulations allow a very nice visualization of the tracer concentration front evolution, while the steady-state profiles along the axial position provide a good perspective of how reactant concentration varies within the reactor.
