Having a detailed knowledge of the intracluster medium (ICM) to infer the exact cluster physics such as the cluster dynamical state is crucial for cluster-based cosmological studies. This knowledge limits the accuracy and precision of mass estimation, a key parameter for such studies. In this paper, we conduct an in-depth analysis of cluster ACT-CL J0240.0+0116 using a multi-wavelength approach, with a primary focus on high angular resolution Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) thermal component observations obtained under the NIKA2 Sunyaev-Zeldovich Large Programme (LPSZ). We create composite images using NIKA2, X-ray, and optical galaxy number density maps. The results reveal distinct signs of disturbance within the cluster with the distributions of gas and member galaxies that do not overlap. We also find suggestions of an inflow of matter onto the cluster from the southwestern direction. Ultimately, we classify the cluster as disturbed, using morphological indicators derived from its SZ, X-ray, and optical image. The cluster SZ signal is also contaminated by a strong central point source. We adopt different approaches to handling this contaminant and find the estimates of our pressure and hydrostatic mass profiles robust to the point source mitigation model. The cluster hydrostatic mass is estimated at $4.25^{+0.50}_{-0.45\, } \times 10^{14} \,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ for the case where the point source was masked. These values are consistent with the mass estimated using only X-ray data and with those from previous SZ studies of the Atacama cosmology telescope (ACT) survey, with improved precision on the mass estimate. Our findings strongly suggest that ACT-CL J0240.0+0116 is a disturbed cluster system, and the detailed observations and derived values serve as a compelling case study for the capabilities of the LPSZ in mapping the cluster ICM with high precision., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, submitted to A&A

The millimeter continuum emission from galaxies provides important information about cold dust, its distribution, heating, and role in their InterStellar Medium (ISM). This emission also carries an unknown portion of the free-free and synchrotron radiation. The IRAM 30m Guaranteed Time Large Project, Interpreting Millimeter Emission of Galaxies with IRAM and NIKA2 (IMEGIN) provides a unique opportunity to study the origin of the millimeter emission on angular resolutions of <18" in a sample of nearby galaxies. As a pilot study, we present millimeter observations of two IMEGIN galaxies, NGC 2146 (starburst) and NGC 2976 (peculiar dwarf) at 1.15 mm and 2 mm. Combined with the data taken with Spitzer, Herschel, Plank, WSRT, and the 100m Effelsberg telescopes, we model the infrared-to-radio Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of these galaxies, both globally and at resolved scales, using a Bayesian approach to 1) dissect different components of the millimeter emission, 2) investigate the physical properties of dust, and 3) explore correlations between millimeter emission, gas, and Star Formation Rate (SFR). We find that cold dust is responsible for most of the 1.15 mm emission in both galaxies and at 2 mm in NGC 2976. The free-free emission emits more importantly in NGC 2146 at 2 mm. The cold dust emissivity index is flatter in the dwarf galaxy ($\beta = 1.3\pm 0.1$) compared to the starburst galaxy ($\beta = 1.7\pm 0.1$). Mapping the dust-to-gas ratio, we find that it changes between 0.004 and 0.01 with a mean of $0.006\pm0.001$ in the dwarf galaxy. In addition, no global balance holds between the formation and dissociation of H$_2$ in this galaxy. We find tight correlations between the millimeter emission and both the SFR and molecular gas mass in both galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

In Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) cluster cosmology, two tools are needed to be able to exploit data from large scale surveys in the millimeter-wave domain. An accurate description of the IntraCluster Medium (ICM) pressure profile is needed along with the scaling relation connecting the SZ brightness to the mass. With its high angular resolution and large field of view, The NIKA2 camera, operating at 150 and 260 GHz, is perfectly suited for precise cluster SZ mapping. The SZ Large Program (LPSZ) of the NIKA2 collaboration is dedicated to the observation of a sample of 38 SZ-selected clusters at intermediate to high redshift and observed both in SZ and X-ray. The current status is that all LPSZ clusters have been observed and the analysis toward the final results is ongoing. Asgard/NOTT is an ERC-funded project hosted at KU Leuven and is part of a new visitor instrumental suite, called Asgard, under preparation for the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Leveraging nulling capabilities and the long VLTI baselines, it is optimized for high-contrast imaging of the snow line region around young nearby main-sequence stars. This will enable the characterization of the atmosphere of young giant exoplanets and warm/hot exozodiacal dust with spectroscopy in the L'-band (3.5-4.0$\mu$m). In this work, we present the first lab assembly of the instrument done at KU Leuven and the technical solutions to tackle the challenge of performing nulling in the mid-infrared despite the thermal background. The opto-mechanical design of the warm optics and the injection system for the photonic chip are described. The alignment procedure used to assemble the system is also presented. Finally, the first experimental results, including fringes and null measurements, are given and confirm the adequacy of the bench to test and optimize the Asgard/NOTT instrument., Comment: 13 pages (incl. 14 figures); Proc. We present the [OIII]52{\mu}m map of the dwarf galaxy IC10, obtained with the Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer (FIFI-LS) on board the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). We combine the [OIII]52{\mu}m map with Herschel and Spitzer observations, to estimate the electron density distribution of the brightest HII regions of IC10. We find that the line ratio [OIII]88{\mu}m/[OIII]52{\mu}m gives electron density (n_e) values (n_e_OIII) that cover a broad range, while the n_e values obtained using the line ratio [SIII]33{\mu}m/[SIII]18{\mu}m (n_e_SIII) are all similar within the uncertainties. n_e_OIII is similar to n_e_SIII for the M1, M2 and A1 regions, and it is higher than n_e_SIII for the two regions, A2 and M1b, which are the brightest in the 24{\mu}m continuum emission. These results suggest that for these regions the two ions, O++ and S++, trace two different ionised gas components, and that the properties of the ionised gas component traced by the O++ ion are more sensitive to the local physical conditions. In fact, while the gas layer traced by [SIII] does not keep track of the characteristics of the radiation field, the n_e_OIII, correlates with the star formation rate (SFR), the dust temperature and the 24{\mu}m. Therefore, n_e_OIII is an indicator of the evolutionary stage of the HII region and the radiation field, with higher n_e_OIII, found in younger SF regions and in more energetic environments., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. We study the emission of dust grains within the Orion Bar - a well-known, highly far-UV (FUV)-irradiated PDR. The Orion Bar because of its edge-on geometry provides an exceptional benchmark for characterizing dust evolution and the associated driving processes under varying physical conditions. Our goal is to constrain the local properties of dust by comparing its emission to models. Taking advantage of the recent JWST PDRs4All data, we follow the dust emission as traced by JWST NIRCam (at 3.35 and 4.8 micron) and MIRI (at 7.7, 11.3, 15.0, and 25.5 micron), along with NIRSpec and MRS spectroscopic observations. First, we constrain the minimum size and hydrogen content of carbon nano-grains from a comparison between the observed dust emission spectra and the predictions of the THEMIS dust model coupled to the numerical code DustEM. Using this dust model, we then perform 3D radiative transfer simulations of dust emission with the SOC code and compare to data obtained along well chosen profiles across the Orion Bar. The JWST data allows us, for the first time, to spatially resolve the steep variation of dust emission at the illuminated edge of the Orion Bar PDR. By considering a dust model with carbonaceous nano-grains and submicronic coated silicate grains, we derive unprecedented constraints on the properties of across the Orion Bar. To explain the observed emission profiles with our simulations, we find that the nano-grains must be strongly depleted with an abundance (relative to the gas) 15 times less than in the diffuse ISM. The NIRSpec and MRS spectroscopic observations reveal variations in the hydrogenation of the carbon nano-grains. The lowest hydrogenation levels are found in the vicinity of the illuminating stars suggesting photo-processing while more hydrogenated nano-grains are found in the cold and dense molecular region, potentially indicative of larger grains., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

To understand the evolution of dust properties in molecular clouds in the course of the star formation process, we constrain the changes in the dust emissivity index from star-forming filaments to prestellar and protostellar cores to T Tauri stars. Using the NIKA2 continuum camera on the IRAM 30~m telescope, we observed the Taurus B211/B213 filament at 1.2\,mm and 2\,mm with unprecedented sensitivity and used the resulting maps to derive the dust emissivity index $\beta$. Our sample of 105 objects detected in the $\beta$ map of the B211/B213 filament indicates that, overall, $\beta$ decreases from filament and prestellar cores ($\beta \sim 2\pm0.5$) to protostellar cores ($\beta \sim 1.2 \pm 0.2$) to T-Tauri protoplanetary disk ($\beta < 1$). The averaged dust emissivity index $\beta$ across the B211/B213 filament exhibits a flat ($\beta \sim 2\pm0.3$) profile. This may imply that dust grain sizes are rather homogeneous in the filament, start to grow significantly in size only after the onset of the gravitational contraction/collapse of prestellar cores to protostars, reaching big sizes in T Tauri protoplanetary disks. High-resolution mapping of the hot gas in galaxy clusters is a key tool for cluster-based cosmological analyses. Taking advantage of the NIKA2 millimeter camera operated at the IRAM 30-m telescope, the NIKA2 SZ Large Program seeks to get a high-resolution follow-up of 38 galaxy clusters covering a wide mass range at intermediate to high redshift. The measured SZ fluxes will be essential to calibrate the SZ scaling relation and the galaxy clusters mean pressure profile, needed for the cosmological exploitation of SZ surveys. We present in this study a method to infer a mean pressure profile from cluster observations. We have designed a pipeline encompassing the map-making and the thermodynamical properties estimates from maps. We then combine all the individual fits, propagating the uncertainties on integrated quantities, such as $R_{500}$ or $P_{500}$, and the intrinsic scatter coming from the deviation to the standard self-similar model. We present the first preliminary results of the project \textit{ICED}, focusing on the face-on galaxy NGC4254. We use the millimetre maps observed with NIKA2 at IRAM-30m, as part of the IMEGIN Guaranteed Time Large Program, and of a wide collection of ancillary data (multi-wavelength photometry and gas phase spectral lines) that are publicly available. We derive the global and local properties of interstellar dust grains through infrared-to-radio spectral energy distribution fitting, using the hierarchical Bayesian code HerBIE, which includes the grain properties of the state-of-the-art dust model, THEMIS. Our method allows us to get the following dust parameters: dust mass, average interstellar radiation field, and fraction of small grains. Also, it is effective in retrieving the intrinsic correlations between dust parameters and interstellar medium properties. We find an evident anti-correlation between the interstellar radiation field and the fraction of small grains in the centre of NGC4254, meaning that, at strong radiation field intensities, very small amorphous carbon grains are efficiently destroyed by the ultra-violet photons coming from newly formed stars, through photo-desorption and sublimation. Three galaxy clusters selected from the XXL X-ray survey at high redshift and low mass ($z\sim1$ and $M_{500} \sim 1-2 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) were observed with NIKA2 to image their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZ) signal. They all present an SZ morphology, together with the comparison with X-ray and optical data, that indicates dynamical activity related to merging events. Despite their disturbed intracluster medium, their high redshifts, and their low masses, the three clusters follow remarkably well the pressure profile and the SZ flux-mass relation expected from standard evolution. The thermodynamical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) are driven by scale-free gravitational collapse, but they also reflect the rich astrophysical processes at play in galaxy clusters. At low masses ($\sim 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) and high redshift ($z \gtrsim 1$), these properties remain poorly constrained observationally, due to the difficulty in obtaining resolved and sensitive data. This paper aims at investigating the inner structure of the ICM as seen through the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in this regime of mass and redshift. Focus is set on the thermal pressure profile and the scaling relation between SZ flux and mass, namely the $Y_{\rm SZ} - M$ scaling relation. The three galaxy clusters XLSSC~072 ($z=1.002$), XLSSC~100 ($z=0.915$), and XLSSC~102 ($z=0.969$), with $M_{500} \sim 2 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, were selected from the XXL X-ray survey and observed with the NIKA2 millimeter camera to image their SZ signal. XMM-Newton X-ray data were used in complement to the NIKA2 data to derive masses based on the $Y_X - M$ relation and the hydrostatic equilibrium. The SZ images of the three clusters, along with the X-ray and optical data, indicate dynamical activity related to merging events. The pressure profile is consistent with that expected for morphologically disturbed systems, with a relatively flat core and a shallow outer slope. Despite significant disturbances in the ICM, the three high-redshift low-mass clusters follow remarkably well the $Y_{\rm SZ}-M$ relation expected from standard evolution. These results indicate that the dominant physics that drives cluster evolution is already in place by $z \sim 1$, at least for systems with masses above $M_{500} \sim 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: 24 pages, published in A&A. The NIKA2 camera operating at the IRAM 30 m telescope excels in high-angular resolution mapping of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect towards galaxy clusters at intermediate and high-redshift. As part of the NIKA2 guaranteed time, the SZ Large Program (LPSZ) aims at tSZ-mapping a representative sample of SZ-selected galaxy clusters in the catalogues of the Planck satellite and of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, and also observed in X-ray with XMM Newton or Chandra. Having completed observations in January 2023, we present tSZ maps of 38 clusters spanning the targeted mass ($3 < M_{500}/10^{14} M_{\odot} < 10$) and redshift ($0.5 < z < 0.9$) ranges. The first in depth studies of individual clusters highlight the potential of combining tSZ and X-ray observations at similar angular resolution for accurate mass measurements. These were milestones for the development of a standard data analysis pipeline to go from NIKA2 raw data to the thermodynamic properties of galaxy clusters for the upcoming LPSZ data release. In the framework of the IMEGIN Large Program, we used the NIKA2 camera on the IRAM 30-m telescope to observe the edge-on galaxy NGC 891 at 1.15 mm and 2 mm and at a FWHM of 11.1" and 17.6", respectively. Multiwavelength data enriched with the new NIKA2 observations fitted by the HerBIE SED code (coupled with the THEMIS dust model) were used to constrain the physical properties of the ISM. Emission originating from the diffuse dust disk is detected at all wavelengths from mid-IR to mm, while mid-IR observations reveal warm dust emission from compact HII regions. Indications of mm excess emission have also been found in the outer parts of the galactic disk. Furthermore, our SED fitting analysis constrained the mass fraction of the small (< 15 Angstrom) dust grains. We found that small grains constitute 9.5% of the total dust mass in the galactic plane, but this fraction increases up to ~ 20% at large distances (|z| > 3 kpc) from the galactic plane., Comment: To appear in Proc. of the mm Universe 2023 conference, Grenoble (France), June 2023, published by F. This study presents the first millimeter continuum mapping observations of two nearby galaxies, the starburst spiral galaxy NGC2146 and the dwarf galaxy NGC2976, at 1.15 mm and 2 mm using the NIKA2 camera on the IRAM 30m telescope, as part of the Guaranteed Time Large Project IMEGIN. These observations provide robust resolved information about the physical properties of dust in nearby galaxies by constraining their FIR-radio SED in the millimeter domain. After subtracting the contribution from the CO line emission, the SEDs are modeled spatially using a Bayesian approach. Maps of dust mass surface density, temperature, emissivity index, and thermal radio component of the galaxies are presented, allowing for a study of the relations between the dust properties and star formation activity (using observations at 24$\mu$m as a tracer). We report that dust temperature is correlated with star formation rate in both galaxies. The effect of star formation activity on dust temperature is stronger in NGC2976, an indication of the thinner interstellar medium of dwarf galaxies. In cluster cosmology, cluster masses are the main parameter of interest. They are needed to constrain cosmological parameters through the cluster number count. As the mass is not an observable, a scaling relation is needed to link cluster masses to the integrated Compton parameters Y, i.e. the Sunyaev-Zeldovich observable (SZ). Planck cosmological results obtained with cluster number counts are based on a scaling relation measured with clusters at low redshift ($z$<0.5) observed in SZ and X-ray. In the SZ Large Program (LPSZ) of the NIKA2 collaboration, the scaling relation will be obtained with a sample of 38 clusters at intermediate to high redshift ($0.5

Dusty starless cores play an important role in regulating the initial phases of the formation of stars and planets. In their interiors, dust grains coagulate and ice mantles form, thereby changing the millimeter emissivities and hence the ability to cool. We mapped four regions with more than a dozen cores in the nearby Galactic filaments of Taurus and Perseus using the NIKA2 camera at the IRAM 30-meter telescope. Combining the 1mm to 2mm flux ratio maps with dust temperature maps from Herschel allowed to create maps of the dust emissivity index $\beta_{1,2}$ at resolutions of 2430 and 5600 a.u. in Taurus and Perseus, respectively. Here, we study the variation with total column densities and environment. $\beta_{1,2}$ values at the core centers ($A_V=12-19$mag) vary significantly between $\sim1.1$ and $2.3$. Several cores show a strong rise of $\beta_{1,2}$ from the outskirts at $\sim4$mag to the peaks of optical extinctions, consistent with the predictions of grain models and the gradual build-up of ice mantles on coagulated grains in the dense interiors of starless cores., Comment: to appear in Proc. of the mm Universe 2023 conference, Grenoble (France), June 2023, published by F. As the millimeter wavelength range remains a largely unexplored spectral region for galaxies, the IMEGIN large program aims to map the millimeter continuum emission of 22 nearby galaxies at 1.15 and 2 mm. Using the high-resolution maps produced by the NIKA2 camera, we explore the existence of very cold dust and take possible contamination by free-free and synchrotron emission into account. We study the IR-to-radio emission coming from different regions along the galactic plane and at large vertical distances. New observations of NGC 891, using the NIKA2 camera on the IRAM 30m telescope, along with a suite of observations at other wavelengths were used to perform a multiwavelength study of the spectral energy distribution in the interstellar medium in this galaxy. This analysis was performed globally and locally, using the advanced hierarchical Bayesian fitting code, HerBIE, coupled with the THEMIS dust model. Our dust modeling is able to reproduce the near-IR to millimeter emission of NGC 891, with the exception of an excess at a level of 25% obtained by the NIKA2 observations in the outermost parts of the disk. The radio continuum and thermal dust emission are distributed differently in the disk and galaxy halo. Different dusty environments are also revealed by a multiwavelength investigation of the emission features. Our detailed decomposition at millimeter and centimeter wavelengths shows that emission at 1 mm is purely originated by dust. Radio components become progressively important with increasing wavelengths. Finally, we find that emission arising from small dust grains accounts for ~ 9.5% of the total dust mass, reaching up to 20% at large galactic latitudes. Low-metallicity dwarf galaxies often show no or little CO emission, despite the intense star formation observed in local samples. Both simulations and resolved observations indicate that molecular gas in low-metallicity galaxies may reside in small dense clumps, surrounded by a substantial amount of more diffuse gas, not traced by CO. Constraining the relative importance of CO-bright versus CO-dark H2 star-forming reservoirs is crucial to understand how star formation proceeds at low metallicity. We put to the test classically used single component radiative transfer models and compare their results to those obtained assuming an increasingly complex structure of the interstellar gas, mimicking an inhomogeneous distribution of clouds with various physical properties. We compute representative models of the interstellar medium as combinations of several gas components, each with a specific set of physical parameters. We introduce physically-motivated models assuming power-law distributions for the density, ionization parameter, and the depth of molecular clouds. We confirm the presence of a predominantly CO-dark molecular reservoir in low-metallicity galaxies. The predicted total H2 mass is best traced by [C II]158um and, to a lesser extent, by [CI] 609um, rather than by CO(1-0). We examine the CO-to-H2 conversion factor vs. metallicity relation and find that its dispersion increases significantly when different geometries of the gas are considered. We define a clumpiness parameter that anti-correlates with [CII]/CO and explains the dispersion of the CO-to-H2 conversion factor vs. metallicity relation. We find that low-metallicity galaxies with high clumpiness may have CO-to-H2 conversion factor as low as the Galactic value. We identify the clumpiness of molecular gas as a key parameter to understand variations of geometry-sensitive quantities, such as CO-to-H2 conversion factor., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 24 pages, 14 figures

(abridged) Quantifying the ISM porosity to ionizing photons in nearby galaxies may improve our understanding of the mechanisms leading to Lyman Continuum photons leakage from galaxies. Primitive galaxies with low metal and dust content have been shown to host a more patchy and porous ISM than their high-metallicity counterparts. To what extent this peculiar structure contributes to the leakage of ionizing photons remains to be quantitatively studied. To address these questions we build a refined grid of models including density-bounded regions and a possible contribution of an X-ray source. Using MULTIGRIS, a new Bayesian code based on Monte Carlo sampling, we combine the models as sectors under various assumptions to extract the probability density distributions of the parameters and infer the corresponding escape fractions from H II regions (fesc,HII). We apply this new code to a sample of 39 well-know local starbursting dwarf galaxies from the Dwarf Galaxy Survey. We confirm previous results hinting at an increased porosity to ionizing photons of the ISM in low-metallicity galaxies and provide, for the first time, quantitative predictions for fesc,HII. The predicted fesc,HII for low-metallicity objects span a large range of values, up to 60%, while the values derived for more metal-rich galaxies are globally lower. We also examine the influence of other parameters on the escape fractions, and find that the specific star-formation rate correlates best with fesc,HII . Finally, we provide observational line ratios which could be used as tracers of the photons escaping from density-bounded regions. Although this multi-sector modelling remains too simple to fully capture the ISM complexity, it can be used to preselect galaxy samples with potential leakage of ionizing photons based on current and up-coming spectral data in unresolved surveys of local and high-redshift galaxies., Comment: 39 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Dust masses in other galaxies are generally derived from the FIR/submm using the emission properties of these MW-calibrated models. Aims: We seek to derive the FIR/submm emissivity in nine nearby spiral galaxies to check its compatibility with MW cirrus measurements. Methods: We obtained values of the emissivity at 70 to 500 um, using maps of dust emission from the Herschel satellite and of gas surface density from the THINGS and HERACLES surveys on a scale generally corresponding to 440 pc. We studied the variation of the emissivity with the surface brightness ratio I(250um)/I(500um), a proxy for the intensity of the interstellar radiation field heating the dust. Results: We find that the average value of the emissivity agrees with MW estimates for pixels sharing the same color as the cirrus, namely, for I(250um)/I(500um) = 4.5. For I(250um)/I(500um) > 5, the measured emissivity is instead up to a factor ~2 lower than predicted from MW dust models heated by stronger radiation fields. Regions with higher I(250um)/I(500um) are preferentially closer to the galactic center and have a higher overall (stellar+gas) surface density and molecular fraction. The results do not depend strongly on the adopted CO-to-molecular conversion factor and do not appear to be affected by the mixing of heating conditions. Conclusions: Our results confirm the validity of MW dust models at low density, but are at odds with predictions for grain evolution in higher density environments. We observed four nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 3627, NGC 4254, NGC 4736 and NGC 5055) in the K band with the 64-m Sardinia Radio Telescope, with the aim of detecting the Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME), a radiation component presumably due to spinning dust grains, observed so far in the Milky Way and in a handful of other galaxies only (most notably, M 31). We mapped the galaxies at 18.6 and 24.6 GHz and studied their global photometry together with other radio-continuum data from the literature, in order to find AME as emission in excess of the synchrotron and thermal components. We only find upper limits for AME. These non-detections, and other upper limits in the literature, are nevertheless consistent with the average AME emissivity from the few detections: it is $\epsilon^\mathrm{AME}_{\mathrm{30~GHz}} = 2.4\pm0.4 \times 10^{-2}$ MJy sr$^{-1}$ (M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$)$^{-1}$ in units of dust surface density (equivalently, $1.4\pm0.2 \times 10^{-18}$ Jy sr$^{-1}$ (H cm$^{-2}$)$^{-1}$ in units of H column density). Interstellar dust plays an important role in the formation of molecular gas and the heating and cooling of the interstellar medium. The spatial distribution of the mm-wavelength dust emission from galaxies is largely unexplored. The NIKA2 Guaranteed Time Project IMEGIN (Interpreting the Millimeter Emission of Galaxies with IRAM and NIKA2) has recently mapped the mm emission in the grand design spiral galaxy NGC6946. By subtracting the contributions from the free-free, synchrotron, and CO line emission, we map the distribution of the pure dust emission at 1:15mm and 2mm. Separating the arm/interarm regions, we find a dominant 2mm emission from interarms indicating the significant role of the general interstellar radiation field in heating the cold dust. The mm-to-cm range of the Spectral Energy Distribution of spiral galaxies remains largely unexplored. Its coverage is required to disentangle the contribution of dust emission, free-free and synchrotron radiation and can provide constraints on dust models, star-formation rates and ISM properties. New observations of the edge-on galaxy NGC 891, at 1.15 and 2 mm obtained with the IRAM 30-m telescope and the NIKA2 camera, within the framework of the IMEGIN (Interpreting the Millimetre Emission of Galaxies with IRAM and NIKA2) Large Program, are presented in this work. By using multiwavelength maps (from the mid-IR to the cm wavelengths) we perform SED fitting in order to extract the physical properties of the galaxy on both global and local ($\sim$kpc) scales. For the interpretation of the observations we make use of a state-of-the-art SED fitting code, HerBIE (HiERarchical Bayesian Inference for dust Emission). The observations indicate a galaxy morphology, at mm wavelengths, similar to that of the cold dust emission traced by sub-mm observations and to that of the molecular gas. The contribution of the radio emission at the NIKA2 bands is very small (negligible at 1.15 mm and $\sim10\%$ at 2 mm) while it dominates the total energy budget at longer wavelengths (beyond 5 mm). We present SOFIA/FIFI-LS observations of the [CII] 158${\mu}$m cooling line across the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946. We combine these with UV, IR, CO, and H I data to compare [CII] emission to dust properties, star formation rate (SFR), H$_2$, and HI at 560pc scales via stacking by environment (spiral arms, interarm, and center), radial profiles, and individual, beam-sized measurements. We attribute $73\%$ of the [CII] luminosity to arms, and $19\%$ and $8\%$ to the center and interarm region, respectively. [CII]/TIR, [CII]/CO, and [CII]/PAH radial profiles are largely constant, but rise at large radii ($\gtrsim$8kpc) and drop in the center ("[CII] deficit"). This increase at large radii and the observed decline with the 70${\mu}$m/100${\mu}$m dust color are likely driven by radiation field hardness. We find a near proportional [CII]-SFR scaling relation for beam-sized regions, though the exact scaling depends on methodology. [CII] also becomes increasingly luminous relative to CO at low SFR (interarm or large radii), likely indicating more efficient photodissociation of CO and emphasizing the importance of [CII] as an H$_2$ and SFR tracer in such regimes. Finally, based on the observed [CII] and CO radial profiles and different models, we find ${\alpha}_{CO}$ to increase with radius, in line with the observed metallicity gradient. The low ${\alpha}_{CO}$ (galaxy average $\lesssim2\,M_{sun}\,pc^{-2}\,(K\,km\,s^{-1})^{-1}$) and low [CII]/CO ratios ($\sim$400 on average) imply little CO-dark gas across NGC 6946, in contrast to estimates in the Milky Way., Comment: 12 pages, 6 Figures, published in ApJ

We present the results of high spatial resolution HCO$^{+}$($1-0$) and HCN($1-0$) observations of N55 south region (N55-S) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). N55-S is a relatively less extreme star-forming region of the LMC characterized by a low radiation field. We carried out a detailed analysis of the molecular emission to investigate the relation between dense molecular clumps and star formation in the quiescent environment of N55-S. We detect ten molecular clumps with significant HCO$^{+}(1-0)$ emission and eight with significant HCN($1-0$) emission, and estimate the molecular clump masses by virial and local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis. All identified young stellar objects (YSOs) in the N55-S are found to be near the HCO$^{+}$ and HCN emission peaks showing the association of these clumps with recent star formation activity. The molecular clumps that have associated YSOs show relatively larger linewidths and masses than those without YSOs. We compare the clump properties of the N55-S with those of other giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the LMC and find that N55-S clumps possess similar size but relatively lower linewidth and larger HCN/HCO$^{+}$(1$-$0) flux ratio. These results can be attributed to the low radiation field in N55-S resulted by relatively low star formation activity compared to other active star-forming regions like 30Doradus-10 and N159. The dense gas fraction of N55-S is $\sim$ 0.025, lower compared to other GMCs of the LMC supporting the low star formation efficiency of this region., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 13 pages, 4 figures

While the CO(1-0) transition is often used to deduce the total molecular hydrogen in galaxies, it is challenging to detect in low metallicity galaxies, in spite of the star formation taking place. In contrast, the [CII] 158 micron line is relatively bright, highlighting a potentially important reservoir of H2 that is not traced by CO(1-0), but residing in the C+ - emitting regions. We explore a method to quantify the total H2 mass (MH2) in galaxies and learn what parameters control the CO-dark gas reservoir. We present Cloudy grids of density, radiation field and metallicity in terms of observed quantities, such as [OI], [CI], CO(1-0), [CII], total infrared luminosity and the total MH2 and provide recipes based on these models to derive total MH2 mass estimates from observations. The models are applied to the Herschel Dwarf Galaxy Survey, extracting the total MH2 for each galaxy which is compared to the H2 determined from the observed CO(1-0) line. While the H2 traced by CO(1-0) can be negligible, the [CII] 158 micron line can trace the total H2. 70% to 100% of the total H2 mass is not traced by CO(1-0) in the dwarf galaxies, but is well-traced by [CII] 158 micron line. The CO-dark gas mass fraction correlates with the observed L[CII]/LCO(1-0) ratio. A conversion factor for [CII] luminosity to total H2 and a new CO-to-total-MH2 conversion factor, as a function of metallicity, is presented. A recipe is provided to quantify the total mass of H2 in galaxies, taking into account the CO and [CII] observations. Accounting for this CO-dark H2 gas, we find that the star forming dwarf galaxies now fall on the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation. Their star-forming efficiency is rather normal, since the reservoir from which they form stars is now more massive when introducing the [CII] measures of the total H2, compared to the little amount of H2 in the CO-emitting region., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Investigating star formation requires precise knowledge of the properties of the dense molecular gas. The low metallicity and wide range of star formation activity of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds make them prime laboratories to study how local physical conditions impact the dense gas reservoirs. The aim of the Dense Gas Survey for the Magellanic Clouds (DeGaS-MC) project is to expand our knowledge of the relation between dense gas properties and star formation activity by targeting the LMC and SMC observed in the HCO+(2-1) and HCN(2-1) transitions. We carried out a pointing survey toward 30 LMC and SMC molecular clouds using the SEPIA180 instrument installed on the APEX telescope and a follow-up mapping campaign in 13 star-forming regions. This first paper provides line characteristic catalogs and integrated line-intensity maps of the sources. HCO+(2-1) is detected in 20 and HCN(2-1) in 8 of the 29 pointings observed. The dense gas velocity pattern follows the line-of-sight velocity field derived from the stellar population. The HCN emission is less extended than the HCO+ emission. The HCO+(2-1)/HCN(2-1) brightness temperature ratios range from 1 to 7, which is consistent with the large ratios commonly observed in low-metallicity environments. A larger number of young stellar objects are found at high HCO+ intensities and lower HCO+/HCN flux ratios, and thus toward denser lines of sight. The dense gas luminosities correlate with the star formation rate traced by the total infrared luminosity over the two orders of magnitude covered by our observations, although substantial region-to-region variations are observed., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 25 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables

We present the first spatially resolved study of molecular gas in the vicinity of a Gamma Ray Burst, using CO(2-1) emission line observations with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) at ~50 pc scales. The host galaxy of GRB 980425 contains a ring of high column density HI gas which is likely to have formed due to a collision between the GRB host and its companion galaxy, within which the GRB is located. We detect eleven molecular gas clumps in the galaxy, seven of which are within the gas ring. The clump closest to the GRB position is at a projected separation of ~280 pc. Although it is plausible that the GRB progenitor was ejected from clusters formed in this clump, we argue that the in situ formation of the GRB progenitor is the most likely scenario. We measure the molecular gas masses of the clumps and find them to be sufficient for forming massive star clusters. The molecular gas depletion times of the clumps show a variation of ~2 dex, comparable with the large variation in depletion times found in starburst galaxies in the nearby Universe. This demonstrates the presence of starburst modes of star formation on local scales in the galaxy, even while the galaxy as a whole cannot be categorised as a starburst based on its global properties. Dust emission, an important diagnostic of star formation and ISM mass throughout the Universe, can be powered by sources unrelated to ongoing star formation. In the framework of the DustPedia project we have set out to disentangle the radiation of the ongoing star formation from that of the older stellar populations. This is done through detailed, 3D radiative transfer simulations of face-on spiral galaxies. In this particular study, we focus on NGC 1068, which contains an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The effect of diffuse dust heating by AGN (beyond the torus) was so far only investigated for quasars. This additional dust heating source further contaminates the broadband fluxes on which classic galaxy modelling tools rely to derive physical properties. We aim to fit a realistic model to the observations of NGC 1068 and quantify the contribution of the several dust heating sources. Our model is able to reproduce the global spectral energy distribution of the galaxy. It matches the resolved optical and infrared images fairly well, but deviates in the UV and the submm. We find a strong wavelength dependency of AGN contamination to the broadband fluxes. It peaks in the MIR, drops in the FIR, but rises again at submm wavelengths. We quantify the contribution of the dust heating sources in each 3D dust cell and find a median value of 83% for the star formation component. The AGN contribution is measurable at the percentage level in the disc, but quickly increases in the inner few 100 pc, peaking above 90%. This is the first time the phenomenon of an AGN heating the diffuse dust beyond its torus is quantified in a nearby star-forming galaxy. NGC 1068 only contains a weak AGN, meaning this effect can be stronger in galaxies with a more luminous AGN. (abridged) The ambiguous origin of [CII] 158um in the interstellar medium complicates its use for diagnostics concerning the star-formation rate and physical conditions in photodissociation regions (PDRs). We observed the giant HII region N11 in the Large Magellanic Cloud with SOFIA/GREAT in order to investigate the origin of [CII] to obtain the total H2 gas content, the fraction of CO-dark H2 gas, and the influence of environmental effects such as stellar feedback. We present an innovative spectral decomposition method that allows statistical trends to be derived. The [CII] line is resolved in velocity and compared to HI and CO, using a Bayesian approach to decompose the profiles. A simple model accounting for collisions in the neutral atomic and molecular gas was used in order to derive the H2 column density traced by C+. The profile of [CII] most closely resembles that of CO, but the integrated [CII] line width lies between that of CO and that of HI. Using various methods, we find that [CII] mostly originates from the neutral gas. We show that [CII] mostly traces the CO-dark H2 gas but there is evidence of a weak contribution from neutral atomic gas preferentially in the faintest components. Most of the molecular gas is CO-dark. The fraction of CO-dark H2 gas decreases with increasing CO column density, with a slope that seems to depend on the impinging radiation field from nearby massive stars. Finally we extend previous measurements of the photoelectric-effect heating efficiency, which we find is constant across regions probed with Herschel, with [CII] and [OI] being the main coolants in faint and diffuse, and bright and compact regions, respectively, and with PAH emission tracing the CO-dark H2 gas heating where [CII] and [OI] emit. We present Herschel Space Observatory Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver Fourier Transform Spectrometer (SPIRE FTS) spectroscopy of a sample of twenty massive Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC). We analyse the brightest far infrared (far-IR) emission lines, that diagnose the conditions of the heated gas in the YSO envelope and pinpoint their physical origin.We compare the properties of massive Magellanic and Galactic YSOs.We find that [OI] and [CII] emission, that originates from the photodissociation region associated with the YSOs, is enhanced with respect to the dust continuum in the Magellanic sample. Furthermore the photoelectric heating efficiency is systematically higher for Magellanic YSOs, consistent with reduced grain charge in low metallicity environments. The observed CO emission is likely due to multiple shock components. The gas temperatures, derived from the analysis of CO rotational diagrams, are similar to Galactic estimates. This suggests a common origin to the observed CO excitation, from low-luminosity to massive YSOs, both in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. Bright far-IR line emission provides a mechanism to cool the YSO environment. We find that, even though [OI], CO and [CII] are the main line coolants, there is an indication that CO becomes less important at low metallicity, especially for the SMC sources. This is consistent with a reduction in CO abundance in environments where the dust is warmer due to reduced ultraviolet-shielding. Aims: We compare the far-infrared to sub-millimetre dust emission properties measured in high Galactic latitude cirrus with those determined in a sample of 204 late-type DustPedia galaxies. The aim is to verify if it is appropriate to use Milky Way dust properties to derive dust masses in external galaxies. Methods: We used Herschel observations and atomic and molecular gas masses to estimate the disc-averaged dust emissivity at 250 micrometres, and from this, the absorption cross section per H atom and per dust mass. The emissivity requires one assumption, which is the CO-to-H_2 conversion factor, and the dust temperature is additionally required for the absorption cross section per H atom; yet another constraint on the dust-to-hydrogen ratio D/H, depending on metallicity, is required for the absorption cross section dust mass. Results: We find epsilon(250) = 0.82 +/- 0.07 MJy sr^-1 (1E20 H cm^-2)^-1 for galaxies with 4 < F(250)/F(500) < 5. This depends only weakly on the adopted CO-to-H_2 conversion factor. The value is almost the same as that for the Milky Way at the same colour ratio. Instead, for F(250)/F(500) > 6, epsilon(250) is lower than predicted by its dependence on the heating conditions. The reduction suggests a variation in dust emission properties for spirals of earlier type, higher metallicity, and with a higher fraction of molecular gas. When the standard emission properties of Galactic cirrus are used for these galaxies, their dust masses might be underestimated by up to a factor of two. Values for the absorption cross sections at the Milky Way metallicity are also close to those of the cirrus. The zodiacal dust complex, a population of dust and small particles that pervades the Solar System, provides important insight into the formation and dynamics of planets, comets, asteroids, and other bodies. Here we present a new set of data obtained using a novel technique: direct measurements of momentum transfer to a spacecraft from individual particle impacts. This technique is made possible by the extreme precision of the instruments flown on the LISA Pathfinder spacecraft, a technology demonstrator for a future space-based gravitational wave observatory that operated near the first Sun-Earth Lagrange point from early 2016 through Summer of 2017. Using a simple model of the impacts and knowledge of the control system, we show that it is possible to detect impacts and measure properties such as the transferred momentum (related to the particle's mass and velocity), direction of travel, and location of impact on the spacecraft. In this paper, we present the results of a systematic search for impacts during 4348 hours of Pathfinder data. We report a total of 54 candidates with momenta ranging from 0.2$\,\mu\textrm{Ns}$ to 230$\,\mu\textrm{Ns}$. We furthermore make a comparison of these candidates with models of micrometeoroid populations in the inner solar system including those resulting from Jupiter-family comets, Oort-cloud comets, Hailey-type comets, and Asteroids. We find that our measured population is consistent with a population dominated by Jupiter-family comets with some evidence for a smaller contribution from Hailey-type comets. We use a sub-set of the DustPedia galaxy sample (461 galaxies) to investigate the effect the environment has had on galaxies. We consider Virgo cluster and field samples and also assign a density contrast parameter to each galaxy, as defined by the local density of SDSS galaxies. We consider their chemical evolution (using M_{Dust}/M_{Baryon} and M_{Gas}/M_{Baryon}), their specific star formation rate (SFR/M_{Stars}), star formation efficiency (SFR/M_{Gas}), stars-to-dust mass ratio (M_{Stars}/M_{Dust}), gas-to-dust mass ratio (M_{Gas}/M_{Dust}) and the relationship between star formation rate per unit mass of dust and dust temperature (SFR/M_{Dust} and T_{Dust}). Late type galaxies (later than Sc) in all of the environments can be modelled using simple closed box chemical evolution and a simple star formation history (SFR(t) \propto t\exp{-t/\tau}). For earlier type galaxies the physical mechanisms that give rise to their properties are clearly much more varied and require a more complicated model (mergers, gas in or outflow). However, we find little or no difference in the properties of galaxies of the same morphological type within the cluster, field or with different density contrasts. It appears that it is morphology, how and whenever this is laid down, and consistent internal physical processes that primarily determine the derived properties of galaxies in the DustPedia sample and not processes related to differences in the local environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The sensitive infrared telescopes, Spitzer and Herschel, have been used to target low-metallicity star-forming galaxies, allowing us to investigate the properties of their interstellar medium (ISM) in unprecedented detail. Interpretation of the observations in physical terms relies on careful modeling of those properties. We have employed a multiphase approach to model the ISM phases (HII region and photodissociation region) with the spectral synthesis code Cloudy. Our goal is to characterize the physical conditions (gas densities, radiation fields, etc.) in the ISM of the galaxies from the Herschel Dwarf Galaxy Survey. We are particularly interested in correlations between those physical conditions and metallicity or star-formation rate. Other key issues we have addressed are the contribution of different ISM phases to the total line emission, especially of the [CII]157um line, and the characterization of the porosity of the ISM. We find that the lower-metallicity galaxies of our sample tend to have higher ionization parameters and galaxies with higher specific star-formation rates have higher gas densities. The [CII] emission arises mainly from PDRs and the contribution from the ionized gas phases is small, typically less than 30% of the observed emission. We also find correlation - though with scatter - between metallicity and both the PDR covering factor and the fraction of [CII] from the ionized gas. Overall, the low metal abundances appear to be driving most of the changes in the ISM structure and conditions of these galaxies, and not the high specific star-formation rates. These results demonstrate in a quantitative way the increase of ISM porosity at low metallicity. Within the framework of the DustPedia project we investigate the properties of cosmic dust and its interaction with the stellar radiation (originating from different stellar populations) for 814 galaxies in the nearby Universe, all observed by the Herschel Space Observatory. We take advantage of the widely used galaxy SED fitting code CIGALE, properly adapted to include the state-of-the-art dust model THEMIS. Using the DustPedia photometry we determine the physical properties of the galaxies, such as, the dust and stellar mass, the star-formation rate, the bolometric luminosity as well as the unattenuated and the absorbed by dust stellar light, for both the old (> 200 Myr) and young (<= 200 Myr) stellar populations. We show how the mass of stars, dust, and atomic gas, as well as the star-formation rate and the dust temperature vary between galaxies of different morphologies and provide recipes to estimate these parameters given their Hubble stage (T). We find a mild correlation between the mass fraction of the small a-C(:H) grains with the specific star-formation rate. On average, young stars are very efficient in heating the dust, with absorption fractions reaching as high as ~77% of the total, unattenuated luminosity of this population. On the other hand, the maximum absorption fraction of old stars is ~24%. Dust heating in early-type galaxies is mainly due to old stars, up to a level of ~90%. Young stars progressively contribute more for `typical' spiral galaxies and they become the dominant source of dust heating for Sm type and irregular galaxies, donating up to ~60% of their luminosity to this purpose. Finally, we find a strong correlation of the dust heating fraction by young stars with morphology and the specific star-formation rate., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures

Observations of evolution in the dust-to-metal ratio allow us to constrain the dominant dust processing mechanisms. In this work, we present a study of the dust-to-metal and dust-to-gas ratios in a sub-sample of ~500 DustPedia galaxies. Using literature and MUSE emission line fluxes, we derived gas-phase metallicities (oxygen abundances) for over 10000 individual regions and determine characteristic metallicities for each galaxy. We study how the relative dust, gas, and metal contents of galaxies evolve by using metallicity and gas fraction as proxies for evolutionary state. The global oxygen abundance and nitrogen-to-oxygen ratio are found to increase monotonically as galaxies evolve. Additionally, unevolved galaxies (gas fraction > 60%, metallicity 12 + log(O/H) < 8.2) have dust-to-metal ratios that are about a factor of 2.1 lower (a factor of six lower for galaxies with gas fraction > 80%) than the typical dust-to-metal ratio (Md/MZ ~ 0.214) for more evolved sources. However, for high gas fractions, the scatter is larger due to larger observational uncertainties as well as a potential dependence of the dust grain growth timescale and supernova dust yield on local conditions and star formation histories. We find chemical evolution models with a strong contribution from dust grain growth describe these observations reasonably well. The dust-to-metal ratio is also found to be lower for low stellar masses and high specific star formation rates (with the exception of some sources undergoing a starburst). Most radiative transfer models assume that dust in spiral galaxies is distributed exponentially. In this paper our goal is to verify this assumption by analysing the two-dimensional large-scale distribution of dust in galaxies from the DustPedia sample. For this purpose, we make use of Herschel imaging in five bands, from 100 to 500{\mu}m, in which the cold dust constituent is primarily traced and makes up the bulk of the dust mass in spiral galaxies. For a subsample of 320 disc galaxies, we successfully perform a simultaneous fitting with a single S\'ersic model of the Herschel images in all five bands using the multiband modelling code GALFITM. We report that the S\'ersic index $n$, which characterises the shape of the S\'ersic profile, lies systematically below 1 in all Herschel bands and is almost constant with wavelength. The average value at 250{\mu}m is $0.67\pm0.37$ (187 galaxies are fitted with $n_{250}\leq0.75$, 87 galaxies have $0.751.25$). Most observed profiles exhibit a depletion in the inner region (at $r<0.3-0.4$ of the optical radius $r_{25}$ ) and are more or less exponential in the outer part. We also find breaks in the dust emission profiles at longer distances $(0.5-0.6)r_{25}$ which are associated with the breaks in the optical and near-infrared. We assume that the observed deficit of dust emission in the inner galaxy region is related to the depression in the radial profile of the HI surface density in the same region because the atomic gas reaches high enough surface densities there to be transformed into molecular gas. If a galaxy has a triggered star formation in the inner region (for example, because of a strong bar instability, which transfers the gas inwards to the centre, or a pseudobulge formation), no depletion or even an excess of dust emission in the centre is observed., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the first results of an ALMA survey of the lower fine structure line of atomic carbon [C I]$(^3P_1\,-\,^{3}P_0)$ in far infrared-selected galaxies on the main sequence at $z\sim1.2$ in the COSMOS field. We compare our sample with a comprehensive compilation of data available in the literature for local and high-redshift starbursting systems and quasars. We show that the [C I]($^3P_1$$\rightarrow$$^3P_0$) luminosity correlates on global scales with the infrared luminosity $L_{\rm IR}$ similarly to low-$J$ CO transitions. We report a systematic variation of $L'_{\rm [C\,I]^3P_1\,-\, ^3P_0}$/$L_{\rm IR}$ as a function of the galaxy type, with the ratio being larger for main-sequence galaxies than for starbursts and sub-millimeter galaxies at fixed $L_{\rm IR}$. The $L'_{\rm [C\,I]^3P_1\,-\, ^3P_0}$/$L'_{\rm CO(2-1)}$ and $M_{\rm{[C I]}}$/$M_{\rm dust}$ mass ratios are similar for main-sequence galaxies and for local and high-redshift starbursts within a 0.2 dex intrinsic scatter, suggesting that [C I] is a good tracer of molecular gas mass as CO and dust. We derive a fraction of $f_{\rm{[C\,I]}} = M_{\rm{[C\,I]}} / M_{\rm{C}}\sim3-13$% of the total carbon mass in the atomic neutral phase. Moreover, we estimate the neutral atomic carbon abundance, the fundamental ingredient to calibrate [C I] as a gas tracer, by comparing $L'_{\rm [C\,I]^3P_1\,-\, ^3P_0}$ and available gas masses from CO lines and dust emission. We find lower [C I] abundances in main-sequence galaxies than in starbursting systems and sub-millimeter galaxies, as a consequence of the canonical $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ and gas-to-dust conversion factors. This argues against the application to different galaxy populations of a universal standard [C I] abundance derived from highly biased samples., Comment: 14 pages + Appendix. Our objective is to investigate the physical properties of the ionised gas of the low-metallicity dwarf galaxy, IC 10, at various spatial scales: from individual HII regions to the entire galaxy scale and examine whether diagnostics for integrated measurements introduce bias in the results. We modeled the ionised gas combining the mid- and far-infrared fine-structure cooling lines observed with Spitzer/IRS and Herschel/PACS, with the photoionisation code Cloudy. The free parameters of the models are the age of the stellar cluster, the density and the ionisation parameter of the ionised gas as well as the depth of the cloud. The latter is used to investigate the leakage of the ionising photons from the analysed regions of IC 10. We investigate HII regions in the main star-forming body, on scales of ~25 pc, three in the main star-forming region in the center of the galaxy and two on the first arc. We then consider larger sizes on the scale of ~200 pc. We find that most clumps have nearly identical properties, density ~10$^{2.} $ - 10$^{2.6}$ cm$^{-3}$, ionisation parameter between 10$^{-2.2}$ and 10$^{-1.6}$ and age of the stellar cluster ~5.5 Myr. All of them are matter-bounded regions, allowing ionising photons to leak. The relatively uniform physical properties of the clumps suggest a common origin for their star formation activity, which could be related to the feedback from stellar winds or supernovae of a previous generation of stars. The properties derived for ~200 pc size "zones" have similar properties as the HII regions they encompass, but with the larger regions tending to be more radiation-bounded. Finally, we investigate the fraction of [CII] 157.7 {\mu}m, [SiII] 34.8 {\mu}m, and [FeII] 25.9 {\mu}m, emission arising from the ionised gas phase and we find that most of the emission originates from the neutral gas, not from the ionised gas., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We study the fraction of stellar radiation absorbed by dust, f_abs, in 814 galaxies of different morphological types. The targets constitute the vast majority (93%) of the DustPedia sample, including almost all large (optical diameter larger than 1'), nearby (v <= 3000 km/s) galaxies observed with the Herschel Space Observatory. For each object, we model the spectral energy distribution from the ultraviolet to the sub-millimetre using the dedicated, aperture-matched DustPedia photometry and the fitting code CIGALE. The value of f_abs is obtained from the total luminosity emitted by dust and from the bolometric luminosity, which are estimated by the fit. On average, 19% of the stellar radiation is absorbed by dust in DustPedia galaxies. The fraction rises to 25% if only late-type galaxies are considered. The dependence of f_abs on morphology, showing a peak for Sb-Sc galaxies, is weak; it reflects a stronger, yet broad, positive correlation with the bolometric luminosity, which is identified for late-type, disk-dominated, high-specific-star-formation rate, gas-rich objects. We find no variation of f_abs with inclination, at odds with radiative transfer models of edge-on galaxies. These results call for a self-consistent modelling of the evolution of the dust mass and geometry along the build-up of the stellar content. We also provide template spectral energy distributions in bins of morphology and luminosity and study the variation of f_abs with stellar mass and specific star formation rate. We confirm that the local Universe is missing the high f_abs}, luminous and actively star-forming objects necessary to explain the energy budget in observations of the extragalactic background light., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, A&A accepted.
