We propose an automatic algorithm, named SDI, for the segmentation of skin lesions in dermoscopic images, articulated into three main steps: selection of the image ROI, selection of the segmentation band, and segmentation. 12. Towards Benchmarking Scene Background Initialization

Abstract

Given a set of images of a scene taken at different times, the availability of an initial background model that describes the scene without foreground objects is the prerequisite for a wide range of applications, ranging from video surveillance to computational photography. Even though several methods have been proposed for scene background initialization, the lack of a common groundtruthed dataset and of a common set of metrics makes it difficult to compare their performance. To move first steps towards an easy and fair comparison of these methods, we assembled a dataset of sequences frequently adopted for background initialization, selected or created ground truths for quantitative evaluation through a selected suite of metrics, and compared results obtained by some existing methods, making all the material publicly available., Comment: 6 pages, SBI dataset, SBMI2015 Workshop

Abstract

Sustainable pumping of water resource requires intervention by a public agency in order to avoid over-exploitation. We study the evolution of compliance and regulation of groundwater resource when farmers can decide whether to comply or not with pumping quotas in an imitation rule described by replicator dynamics. The public agency sets the optimal quotas and the farmers can choose between compliance or violation of them. We investigate the policy of the public agency which may impose sanctions to discourage withdrawals that deviate from the optimal quota. Using numerical simulations, we analyze the effects that parameters have on the equilibrium of the aquifer and on the farmers' behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Gene essentiality is a genetic concept crucial for a comprehensive understanding of life and evolution. In the last decade, many essential genes (EGs) have been determined using different experimental and computational approaches, and this information has been used to reduce the genomes of model organisms. A growing amount of evidence highlights that essentiality is a property that depends on the context. Because of their importance in vital biological processes, recognising context-specific EGs (csEGs) could help for identifying new potential pharmacological targets and to improve precision therapeutics. Since most of the computational procedures proposed to identify and predict EGs neglect their context-specificity, we focused on this aspect, providing a theoretical and experimental overview of the literature, data and computational methods dedicated to recognising csEGs. To this end, we adapted existing computational methods to exploit a specific context (the kidney tissue) and experimented with four different prediction methods using the labels provided by four different identification approaches. The considerations derived from the analysis of the obtained results, confirmed and validated also by further experiments for a different tissue context, provide the reader with guidance on exploiting existing tools for achieving csEGs identification and prediction.
