This paper analyzes patterns of residential segregation for many nationalities in Barcelona and Madrid during the 2008–2018 period. In the first year, the financial bubble burst, halting the exponential growth of immigrants and in the second, after the great recession, the arrival of immigrant population resumes. The multilevel analysis for the dissimilarity index is applied for the first time to Spanish cities. Complementing the results of global indices with the multilevel framework provides a richer and more detailed profile of segregation patterns. Based on these results, a typology of segregation patterns by nationalities was carried out. Global indices show higher segregation in Madrid than in Barcelona, and multilevel results evidence increasing and extending areas of high concentration of immigrants and mixing neighbourhoods. The cluster analysis demonstrates that, in this case, segregation patterns are not the same for continents or income levels of countries of origin. The results provide nuanced empirical evidence of place stratification and ethnic enclave models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents the results of a research project focused on median Catalonian cities. This kind of cities, which characterize Catalonian polycentric urban system and European urban system, have received less attention than large global cities. An estimation of the wage income for 41 cities allows analysing the relationship with income inequality and income and immigrant population residential segregation. Along the period (2001-2011), a reduction in wage income, decreasing inequality and high-income segregation and increasing low-income and immigrant population segregation is observed. This general pattern presents variability between the nine largest cities, provincial capitals and county capitals located in the Barcelona Metropolitan Region and the 22 cities that are not county capitals, some in the BMR and others outside this grouping., Este trabajo presenta los resultados de un proyecto de investigación sobre las condiciones socioeconómicas en las ciudades medianas de Cataluña.

This paper was presented at the 5th Spanish Input-Output Conference that took place at the University of Seville, from the 18th to the 20th of September 2013, Between 1995 and 2005, the Spanish economy grew at an annual average rate higher than 3,5%. Total employment increased by more than 4.9 millions. Most of this growth was in occupations related with university degrees (more than 890,000, 18% of the total employment increase) and vocational qualifications (more than 855,000, 17.5% of the total employment increase). From a sectoral perspective, the main part of this increase took place in “Real estate, renting and business activities” (K sector in NACE rev.1), “Construction” (F sector) and “Health and social sector” (N sector). This paper analyses this employment growth in an Input-output framework, by means of a structural decomposition analysis (SDA). Two kinds of results have been obtained. From a sectoral perspective we decompose employment growth into Labour requirements change, technical change and demand change. From an occupational perspective, we decompose the employment growth in substitutions effect, labour productivity effect and demand effect. The results show that, in aggregated terms, the main part of this growth is attributable to demand growth, with a small technical improvement. But the results also show that this aggregated behaviour hides important sectoral and occupational variation. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the ongoing debate over productivity growth and what has been called the “growth model” for the Spanish economy., Entre 1995 y 2005, la economía española creció a una tasa anual media superior al 3,5%.

An innovative and alternative approach to estimate the income levels and analyse their distribution is presented. The wage income is obtained matching wage estimations from the Wage Structure Survey (WSS) with data from Census (1996-2001) broken down by census tract. The spatial resolution improves significantly existing data. Average wage income for each one of the 2500 census tracts of the 36 municipalities pertaining to the BMA for two periods is obtained. Average wage income shows high positive spatial autocorrelation; zones with similar levels tend to be spatially concentrated. Inequality has increased in this period. Intra-municipality component, differences inside municipalities, is the main cause of this growth.

ddc:330 - Abstract
This paper focuses on the income distribution of households in Barcelona Metropolitan Area. For this purpose we use the Monocentric model. As the basic model does not have direct implications for this distribution, we survey the extensions of the model that have been used in empirical literature. One of the most promising ways is to introduce externalities in the decision process; they can result directly from exogenous amenities (natural traits of urban area) or be created directly by other agents' decisions. In this case, a spatial lag model and spatial error model are suited for the empirical purposes. We present evidence that any model with spatial effects improves significantly the econometric results.

Àrea metropolitana) [Salaris Barcelona (Catalunya] ,Àrea metropolitana) Condicions econòmiques [Barcelona (Catalunya] ,Desigualtats econòmiques regionals - Abstract
The measure and estimation of income levels in Barcelona Metropolitan Area (BMA) goes back a long way. Using different approaches and focusing on different municipalities, there is a lot of work in the field. The majority of the literature has focused on the estimation of income levels using variables related to consumption. The empirical evidence on wage differentials has shown an important growth during 80’s and 90’s especially in United Kingdom and USA. Less is known on spatial distribution of inequality. This paper presents a new data set for analyzing spatial distribution of wage income. This data is obtained by matching Wage Structure Survey (WSS) with data from Census disaggregated by census tracts. In this way we have a unique data set with wage incomes for every census track for 36 municipalities belonging to BMA. We develop a descriptive analysis of spatial distribution, testing for spatial autocorrelation and use the family of Generalised Entropy Indices to measure inequality. Properties of the index allow us to decompose inequality into inter and intra-municipality measures. Since we have two cross-sectional data for WSS (1995-2002) we can also analyze the evolution of the inequality in this period of economic growth. Key words: spatial distribution of wages, spatial autocorrelation, inequality indices.

Osona (Catalunya) ,Igualtat retributiva ,Renda - Abstract
This study analyses the distribution of wage income in Osona, comparing it with the rest of Catalonian counties and focusing on its distribution among the municipalities. It uses a new data set created by matching wage information provided by the Wage Structure Survey and population information provided by 1996 and 2001 census. The spatial unit used, census tract, allows estimations for different geographical domains and to calculate and decompose inequality indices that make sense of the main characteristics of the distributions.

CENTRAL business districts ,HOMOGENEITY ,POPULATION density ,INCOME inequality ,HOME prices - Abstract
The basic monocentric city model implies a decreasing relationship between distance to the Central Business District and outcome variables such as population density, housing prices, land rent, and income. Implicitly, the monocentric model implies directional homogeneity, that is, the distance effect does not depend on the direction in which it is being measured. Only a few works have analyzed the problem of directional heterogeneity. A new conditional parametric approach is introduced to deal with the issue. We study how this approach performs under different spatial patterns comparing with several other methods. An application to the spatial distribution of wage income in the municipality of Madrid is carried out to illustrate the main characteristics of the method and to show the comparative advantages. The main objective of this thesis is determined by the analysis of several important aspects of the economic reality of Spanish chemical sector for the period from 2007-2011. As can been see, this period comprises two clearly distinct stages, one of stagnation and another clear expansion. This work is developed in three phases. At first, it makes the theoretical and methodological framework on the variables of vital importance in the industrial fabric, such as productivity, efficiency and internationalization. In a second stage, we get the estimation of the Cobb-Douglas production function using three methods: Minimum Ordinary Square, Fixed Effects and finally, Random Effects. Subsequently, using the three methods described above, we perform estimation of the total factor productivity of companies in the Spanish chemical sector, the we compare this variable with respect to sector for Spanish regions, as well as what has been the trend in productivity over the period shown. Also, this thesis analyses the relationship between the productivity and international position where the Spanish companies in the chemical sector are placed. The main purpose of this thesis is to contribute to economic literature to determine whether the internationalized companies, either through investment or export are more productive than those that do not sell on the worldwide market. As expected, the results show how those companies with high productivity internationalize through export as well as the investment seems to exist a positive relationship. In a third section, are found evidence of the relationship between the internationalization of enterprises with regarding efficiency through nonparametric model such as the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The results show that the inclusion of binary variable internationalization through subsidiaries has a positive value with respect to technical efficiency. In the last section are developed the general conclusions of the research proposed in this thesis, where we can conclude the importance of Total Factor Productivity and technical efficiency as regards the internationalization of Spanish companies in the chemical industry for the period 2007 -2011.
