Abstract Background The documentation of ethnobotanical knowledge in Sudan is restricted to specific regions, and there is a far-reaching lack of written information on the traditional use of medicinal plants in other places like Darfur State, in western Sudan. The present study was designed to document the medicinal plants used in traditional medicine of Melit area in North Darfur State. Method Ethnomedicinal information was collected from 135 local informants through semi-structured questionnaires. Data were analysed for use value (UV), informant consensus factor (ICF) and fidelity level. Results A total of 59 medicinal plants, belonging to 32 families and 55 genera, were recorded for their traditional uses in Melit area. Fabaceae were represented by highest number of species (13) followed by Asteraceae and Malvaceae (4 each) and Poaceae (3). Herbs comprise the main sources (50.8%) of traditional remedies. Fruits and stem bark (17.9% each) were the major plant parts used. Decoction (36.5%) is the most mode of preparation used. Geigeria alata was most commonly used species with UV of 2.37. The highest ICF values were recorded for swellings (ICF = 1.00) and respiratory system (ICF = 0.95) categories. Ten plants, namely Carica papaya, Corchorus trilocularis, Eragrostis cilianensis, Heliotropium sudanicum, Mollugo cerviana, Psiadia punctulate, Rhynchosia minima, Solanum coagulans, Solanum forskalii and Tephrosia purpurea, were cited for the first time as medicinal plants used in Sudan traditional medicine. Resins of Boswellia papyrifera, seeds of Nigella sativa, pods of Vachellia nilotica (syn. Acacia nilotica) and clove of Syzygium aromticum were used to make different preparations for the treatment of the corona virus. Conclusion This is the first ethnobotanical survey conducted in this region which is always suffering from security issues, and results indicated that Melit area harbours high diversity of plants used traditionally to cure different health conditions. The present study aids in conserving such rich heritage, and it is recommended that the newly reported species worth further studying over their phytochemical and biological properties.

This study intends to investigate the role of culture in the acquisition of pragmatic competence by EFL learners. It investigated the refusal of requests and offers used by Bahraini and Indian learners of English compared to those employed by native speakers of English. It also explored the similarities and differences between refusal strategies used by Bahraini and Indian L2 learners on the one hand and native speakers of English on the other. The participants included 20 Bahraini and 20 Indian learners of English (ILE) and 12 British and American native speakers of English (NE). Two instruments were used to collect the data: a discourse completion test (DCT) and open-ended Role Plays. The data were classified using widely used refusal strategies classifications and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicated that there were differences between the two EFL groups and the NE control group in the frequency and number of pragmatic strategies.

Since Antiquity, sustainable resources of gold and copper have been mined at two prominent prospects in the north Eastern Desert of Egypt, namely the south Gabel Um Monqul (SGUM) and Gabal Al Kharaza (GKZ). Mineralization is hosted by Neoproterozoic shield rocks represented by dacite and monzo- to syenogranite at the SGUM prospect whereas they are diorite, granodiorite, and quartz feldspar porphyry at the GKZ prospect. These hosts have been emplaced in an island arc environment from calc-alkaline magmas with a peraluminous to metaluminous signature. They are hydrothermally altered including albitization, sericitization, silicification, epidotization, and chloritization. The Au and Cu mineralizations are confined to shear zones that lately filled with auriferous quartz veins adjacent to mineralized alteration zones. In the GKZ prospect, the old trenches trend mainly in a NW–SE direction whereas it is NE–SW and NW–SE in the SGUM prospect. Evidence of shearing ranges from megascopic conjugate fractures and shear planes in the outcrops to microscopic sheared and crumbled Au-Cu ore assemblages dominated by Fe-Cu sulfides, specularite, and barite. Microscopic investigation suggests that the formation of specularite is due to the shearing of early existing magnetite. The ore textures and paragenetic sequence indicate that pyrite in the alteration zones is oxidized, leading to the liberation of gold up to 3.3 g/t. The formulae of the analyzed electrum lie in the range Au74.5-76.8 Ag22.2-24.5. Integration of the field, geochemistry, and mineral chemistry data, combined with the gold fire assay data prove the presence of sustainable amounts of disseminated Au and Cu, not only in the mineralized quartz veins, but also in the alteration zones. Data materialized in our paper show similarities in the style of mineralization at the SGUM and the GKZ prospects with iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits elsewhere in the Arabian-Nubian Shield (ANS) and other world examples.
