1. Optimizing chlorophyll meter (SPAD) reading to allow efficient nitrogen use in rice and wheat under rice-wheat cropping system in eastern India

Abstract

Conventional agricultural practices that rely heavily on blanket fertilizer recommendation, eventually leading to deteriorated partial factor productivity and N use efficiency. We investigated the effect of SPAD-based N-management on productivity and N use efficiency of rice and wheat in eastern India. Here, in the experiment three SPAD thresholds (34, 36 and 38 in rice and 38, 40 and 42 in wheat) using three N levels (15, 25 and 35 kg N ha−1) in split were incorporated as real-time N management (RTNM), one fixed-time N management (FTNM), farmers’ fertilizer practice (FFP) and control (No fertilizer) were introduced in wet and dry seasons for rice and wheat, respectively, during the years 2010 to 2012. Topdressing with 25 kg N ha−1 at medium SPAD (S36 in rice and S40 in wheat) increased soil N availability, leaf N content and grain yield of rice (5215 kg ha−1) and wheat (4483 kg ha−1) over the grain yield recorded under a low rate of N topdressing at low SPAD. While saving 33.3% N in rice and 18.8% N in wheat, the agronomic N use efficiency (58.5% in both rice and wheat) and nitrogen recovery efficiency (32.2% in rice and 15.1% in wheat) can be increased when compared with conventional FTNM. The SPAD-based management strategy showed great promise in efficient management of N fertilizer, and we estimated the optimal SPAD threshold for rice and wheat as 37.5 and 41.8, respectively.

5. Analysis of Trend in Groundwater-Quality Parameters: A Case Study

Abstract

In the 21st century, groundwater has a pivotal role in ensuring water, food, and environmental securities worldwide. Systematic observation, protection and restoration are essential for sustainable management of water resources. Regular monitoring is key to investigate temporal changes in groundwater quality, and statistical trend tests define whether these changes are significant or not. This study focuses on investigating trend in seasonal groundwater quality in an alluvial coastal basin of West Bengal, India. The seasonal groundwater-quality data (pH, TH, TDS, Fe2+ and HCO3ˉ) of pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons were collected for 2011–2018 period and analyzed using three non-parametric statistical trend detection tests, namely: (i) Original Mann-Kendall (M-K) test, (ii) Modified Mann-Kendall (mM-K) test, and (iii) Spearman Rank Order Correlation (SROC) test. The trend magnitudes were estimated by using the Sen’s slope estimation test. Statistical analyses revealed that seasonal concentrations of all five groundwater-quality parameters have large spatial (block-wise) variation within the study area. The results of trend analyses indicated that seasonal TH and TDS concentrations mainly have significant decreasing trends (α = 5% or 1%), whereas seasonal HCO3ˉ and Fe2+ concentrations mostly show significant increasing trends (α = 5% or 1%) in different blocks. However, seasonal pH concentrations exhibited no trend. The mM-K test was found to be over-sensitive in finding trends than M-K and SROC tests. The SROC test was found to be less sensitive in detecting trends than M-K and mM-K tests. Trend magnitudes of seasonal pH, TH, TDS, HCO3ˉ and Fe2+ concentrations varied from –0.03/year to 0.23/year, –57.44 mg/L/year to 25.88 mg/L/year, –172.98 mg/L/year to 92.58 mg/L/year, –15.81 mg/L/year to 27.88 mg/L/year, and –0.05 mg/L/year to 0.61 mg/L/year, respectively. Continuous and proper groundwater-quality monitoring is critically required in all aquifer systems. The outcomes of this study will aid policy-makers in appropriately monitoring and managing groundwater quality.

Abstract

Due to poor water resources management, groundwater-dependent agriculture induces substantial stress on several aquifer systems worldwide, which poses a serious threat to water and food security. However, only a few studies have addressed this vital issue. This study aimed to evaluate stress on aquifers due to the overuse of groundwater for food production and explore pathways for stress reduction via improved irrigation efficiency and productivity. Groundwater stress was characterized using the ratio of water use to availability, with consideration for environmental flows. The results indicated that out of 107 countries—dependent on groundwater irrigation, about half are overexploiting groundwater, while one-fifth of these countries are extracting moderately-to heavily. Over 90% of the non-renewable groundwater abstraction occurs in 7 countries. Further, about 450 million tonnes (Mt) of global annual food production is from non-renewable groundwater exploitation. If the existing irrigation efficiency is increased to 90%, current groundwater stress would be reduced by 40%. Additionally, in unstressed regions, it would be possible to produce additional 300 Mt of food by using saved water while maintaining groundwater stress at acceptable levels. Moreover, improved water productivity in conjunction with increased irrigation efficiency could reduce the current level of unsustainable food production by 47%. These results provide important insights into the dynamics of irrigation stress on groundwater systems, and the role of managerial interventions.

Abstract

Population growth, increasing urbanization and industrialization, mismanagement, and climate change are accountable for the rising depletion and pollution of groundwater worldwide. Consequently, water security, food security, and environmental security are in jeopardy, leading to a severe concern for the sustainable water supply on the Earth. The contamination of groundwater, a complex and hidden resource, is difficult to detect and treat. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate aquifer’s propensity for contamination to protect this precious resource. In this paper, a novel approach integrating the GWQI (Groundwater Quality Index), AVI (Aquifer Vulnerability Index), and geospatial modeling is proposed to explore aquifer susceptibility to contamination, applied to an unconfined aquifer. The Groundwater Quality Index (GWQI) was developed by the conventional method and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), whereas the Aquifer Vulnerability Index (AVI) was developed using a modified DRASTIC model. It was found that the spherical semi-variogram along with simple Kriging is suitable for interpolating concentrations of groundwater quality parameters. Geospatial modeling indicated that the AHP-based GWQI map is more accurate than the conventional method. The integration of the best GWQI and AVI resulted in an Aquifer Susceptibility Index (ASI) map, which revealed that >80% of the study area falls under ‘severe’ to ‘very severe’ susceptible zones, while about 20% of the area falls under ‘moderate’ or ‘minimum’ susceptible zones. The validation results confirmed that the developed ASI map is reliable. The ASI map can serve as a useful tool for planners and decision makers to devise sustainable aquifer management programs to protect vital groundwater resources from contamination and ensure a safe and reliable water supply under climate change.

Abstract

In this paper, we present and analyze a global database of soil infiltration measurements, the Soil Water Infiltration Global (SWIG) database, for the first time. In total, 5023 infiltration curves were collected across all continents in the SWIG database. These data were either provided and quality checked by the scientists who performed the experiments or they were digitized from published articles. Data from 54 different countries were included in the database with major contributions from Iran, China, and USA. In addition to its global spatial coverage, the collected infiltration curves cover a time span of research from 1976 to late 2017. Basic information on measurement location and method, soil properties, and land use were gathered along with the infiltration data, which makes the database valuable for the development of pedo-transfer functions for estimating soil hydraulic properties, for the evaluation of infiltration measurement methods, and for developing and validating infiltration models. Soil textural information (clay, silt, and sand content) is available for 3842 out of 5023 infiltration measurements (~76 %) covering nearly all soil USDA textural classes except for the sandy clay and silt classes. Information on the land use is available for 76 % of experimental sites with agricultural land use as the dominant type (~40 %). We are convinced that the SWIG database will allow for a better parameterization of the infiltration process in land surface models and for testing infiltration models. All collected data and related soil characteristics are provided online in *.xlsx and *.csv formats for reference, and we add a disclaimer that the database is for use by public domain only and can be copied freely by referencing it. Supplementary data are available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.885492. Data quality assessment is strongly advised prior to any use of this database. Finally, we would like to encourage scientists to extend/update the SWIG by uploading new data to it.

Abstract

There is a dearth of relevant books dealing with both theory and application of time series analysis techniques, particularly in the field of water resources engineering. Therefore, many hydrologists and hydrogeologists face difficulties in adopting time series analysis as one of the tools for their research. This book fills this gap by providing a proper blend of theoretical and practical aspects of time sereies analysis. It deals with a comprehensive overview of time series characteristics in hydrology/water resources engineering, various tools and techniques for analyzing time series data, theoretical details of 31 available statistical tests along with detailed procedures for applying them to real-world time series data, theory and methodology of stochastic modelling, and current status of time series analysis in hydrological sciences. Abstract

Land and water are primary ingredients in generating rural livelihoods, growing food, producing energy, supporting industrial and service sector growth, and ensuring the integrity of ecosystems and the goods and services they provide. Water also poses its own development challenges. The occurrence of disasters such as floods, droughts and water-related diseases often produce a huge impact on communities as well as on national economies (GWP, 2004; NDMD, 2004). The ever-increasing human and livestock population is creating tremendous pressure on the land and water to get food, fodder, fuel and shelter. To feed the enormous population, cultivation of land has been intensified and even expanded into unsuitable and unprotected lands, and fallow cycles have been shortened (Sombroek and Sene, 1993; Sommer et al., 2001). However, soil resources, highly diversified over different geographic locations, are vulnerable, fragile and prone to degradation due to improper management practices. In addition, growing water scarcity is a serious concern in the 21st century (Postel, 1993; Loucks, 2000; Evans and Sadler, 2008).

Abstract

This paper focuses on the effects of tidal fluctuations on groundwater in the Konan groundwater basin of Japan and the methodology for estimating aquifer parameters by the tidal response technique. The field investigation revealed that the two wells (H-5 and I-2) near the coastline are significantly affected by seawater intrusion, and the water quality is not suitable for most beneficial uses. The tidal cycle further aggravates the groundwater contamination by seawater intrusion into the basin. Using the tidal response model, the aquifer hydraulic conductivity (K) at these two sites is estimated to be 4.5 × 10-3 and 5.1 × 10-3 m s-1, respectively. It was also indicated by the inverse modeling that the tidal fluctuations affect the study area up to about 1 km from the coastline. Further, the tidal efficiency was determined in the range of 20 to 21% at Site I-2 and 38 to 41% at Site H-5. The estimates of the storage coefficient (S) based on the time lag equation were not found reliable for the phreatic aquifer. However, the tidal efficiency-factor equation yielded reliable S estimates in this study. Finally, it is concluded that the tidal response technique is effective and reliable for estimating aquifer parameters in the coastal region, and that the Konan basin must be managed judiciously to ensure sustainable utilization of its vital groundwater resources. This work is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License., In this paper, we present and analyze a novel global database of soil infiltration measurements, the Soil Water Infiltration Global (SWIG) database. In total, 5023 infiltration curves were collected across all continents in the SWIG database. These data were either provided and quality checked by the scientists who performed the experiments or they were digitized from published articles. Data from 54 different countries were included in the database with major contributions from Iran, China, and the USA. In addition to its extensive geographical coverage, the collected infiltration curves cover research from 1976 to late 2017. Basic information on measurement location and method, soil properties, and land use was gathered along with the infiltration data, making the database valuable for the development of pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for estimating soil hydraulic properties, for the evaluation of infiltration measurement methods, and for developing and validating infiltration models. Soil textural information (clay, silt, and sand content) is available for 3842 out of 5023 infiltration measurements ( ∼ 76%) covering nearly all soil USDA textural classes except for the sandy clay and silt classes. Information on land use is available for 76 % of the experimental sites with agricultural land use as the dominant type (∼ 40%). We are convinced that the SWIG database will allow for a better parameterization of the infiltration process in land surface models and for testing infiltration models. All collected data and related soil characteristics are provided online in *.xlsx and *.csv formats for reference, and we add a disclaimer that the database is for public domain use only and can be copied freely by referencing it.
