Abstract

Tooth development occurs synchronously with the development of the turcica sella; a structure responsible for accommodating the pituitary gland. Recent evidence suggests the relationship between sella turcica morphology and dental anomalies as well as, the influence of hormones excreted by the pituitary gland and craniofacial development. This study aimed to perform a systematic review to explore the association between tooth agenesis and the morphological variations of the sella turcica. The studies were included in this systematic review according to the PRISMA recommendations, following PECOS parameters. The search was carried out in the PubMed database using the following descriptors: tooth agenesis, oligodontia, hypodontia, congenital missing tooth, dental agenesis, congenital missing teeth, anodontia, sella turcica. The data from the included studies were compiled and organized according to the study's characteristics. The search retrieved 20 titles and abstracts. Only six articles were eligible for full article evaluation. Five studies evaluated isolated tooth agenesis, while one study evaluated tooth agenesis in non-syndromic oral cleft patients. Two articles were identified through a manual search. Almost all the studies showed that there is a significant association between sella turcica bridging and tooth agenesis. In conclusion, there is an association between tooth agenesis and the morphological variations of the sella turcica.

Abstract

There is a growing search for innovations in dental materials and instruments and, therefore, an increase need to optimize the instruments used in the absolute isolation. The gold standard procedure contributes significantly to the quality of restorative and endodontic procedures. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the radiopacity of polyethylene terephthalate polymer clamps and compare them to conventional metal clamps.The polyethylene terephthalate clamp was developed at the University of Uberaba (Patent application #PI0901719-4, Uberaba, MG, Brazil). Five polyethylene terephthalate clamps and five conventional metal clamps were used. The clamps were positioned, next to an aluminum scale, under the same phosphor plate to perform 3 radiographs. The locator cylinder was set perpendicular to the radiographic films at a focal length of 20 cm and set to 60 kVp and 0.06 seconds. After image processing, optical density values were read using DBWin 5.0.4 software. The mean of the 3 readings taken on each clamp was adopted as the radiodensity of the specimen. The differences between the groups were compared using Student's t-test (Polyethylene terephthalate clamps demonstrated significantly lower radiopacity than conventional metal clamps (Polyethylene terephthalate clamps have lower radiopacity when compared to conventional metal clamps.

Abstract

White spot lesions are considered to be a major concern in esthetic dentistry. These lesions can be treated With noninvasive to less invasive procedures, which remain a challenge for many clinicians. The treatment of choice should be as minimally invasive as possible and should aim to minimize the color difference between the white spots and the healthy tooth enamel. Tooth whitening can be used initially to minimize this difference by rendering the extent of the: white spot defects less visible, which permits a bevel effect. In addition, the microinvasive treatment option of resin infiltration, which does not involve trauma or require cavity preparation, can supplement the to5tH--whitening procedure to achieve excellent esthetic results, giving patients renewed confidence in their smiles. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to Illustrate the combination of dental bleaching and resin infiltration in a patient with white spot lesions caused by diffuse opacities (teeth that were undergoing enamel maturation at the time of occurrence of a systemic insult). Abstract

Skeletal malocclusions are common phenotypes in humans and have a strong influence on genetic factors. Transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) controls numerous functions of the human body, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration. Thus, this study is aimed at evaluating whether genetic polymorphisms in TGFB1 and its receptor TGFBR2 are associated with mandibular retrognathism in German children and adolescents. Children and teenagers older than 8 years in the mixed or permanent dentition were included in this study. Patients with syndromes and facial trauma and patients with congenital alterations were excluded. Digital cephalometric tracings were performed using the anatomical landmarks point A, point B, sella (S), and nasion (N). Patients that have a retrognathic mandible (°) were selected as case group, and the patients with an orthognathic mandible (°– 82°) were selected as the control group. Genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from saliva was used to evaluate four genetic polymorphisms in TGFB1 (rs1800469 and rs4803455) and TGBR2 (rs3087465 and rs764522) using real-time PCR. Chi-square or Fisher exact tests were used to compare gender, genotype, and allele distribution among groups. Genotype distribution was calculated in an additive and recessive model. Haplotype analysis was also performed. The established alpha of this study was 5%. A total of 146 patients (age ranging from 8 to 18 years) were included in this epidemiological genetic study. The genetic polymorphism rs3087465 in TGFBR2 was associated with mandibular retrognathism. Carrying the AA genotype in the rs3087465 polymorphism decreased the chance of having mandibular retrognathism (, to 0.94, ). None of the haplotypes was associated with mandibular retrognathism (). In conclusion, we found that the genetic polymorphism rs3087465 in the promoter region of the TGFBR2 was associated with mandibular retrognathism in Germans.

Abstract

Background: Dental avulsion is characterized by the displacement of the tooth out of the alveolar cavity, causing damage to the periodontal ligament and dental pulp. Its prognosis depends on the immediate actions taken after the accident, and reimplantation is the best way to restore function and aesthetics to the patient. Objective: To compare the last three protocols of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) and evaluate the evolution of the treatment, highlighting the recommended therapy. Material and Methods: IADT guidelines published in 2007, 2012, and 2020 and articles related to dental avulsion were used,searched on the digital platforms Pubmed and Google Scholar. Classification analysis of the articles found by the Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator was used. Only studies with Q1 and Q2 ratings were included. Results: Major updates in storage media with physiological osmolarity, cleaning of the avulsed tooth, antibiotic therapy, root canal treatment, root surface treatment, and clot removal from the alveolar cavity were implemented. Conclusion: Updating professionals regarding the therapeutic protocols related to avulsion is necessary for a view of the broad update regarding the recommended management strategies. Introducción: La avulsión se caracteriza por el desplazamiento del diente fuera de la cavidad alveolar, provocando daño en el ligamento periodontal y la pulpa dentaria. Su pronóstico depende de las acciones inmediatas que se realicen tras el accidente, siendo el reimplante la mejor forma de devolver la función y estética al paciente. Objetivo: Comparar los tres últimos protocolos de la Asociación Internacional de Traumatología Dental (IADT) y evaluar la evolución del tratamiento, destacando la terapia recomendada. Material y Métodos: Se utilizaron las guías de la IADT publicadas en 2007, 2012 y 2020 y artículos relacionados con la avulsión dental, buscados en las plataformas digitales Pubmed y Google Scholar. Se utilizó un análisis de clasificación de los artículos encontrados por el indicador Scimago Journal Rank (SJR). Solo se incluyeron estudios con calificaciones Q1 y Q2. Resultados: Se implementaron importantes actualizaciones en medios de almacenamiento con osmolaridad fisiológica, limpieza del diente avulsionado, antibioticoterapia, tratamiento de conducto, tratamiento de superficie radicular y remoción de coágulos de la cavidad alveolar. Conclusión: La actualización de los profesionales en cuanto a los protocolos terapéuticos relacionados con la avulsión es necesaria ante la amplia actualización en cuanto a las estrategias de manejo recomendadas. Objetivo: Comparar os três últimos protocolos da International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) e avaliar a evolução do tratamento, destacando a terapêutica preconizada. Material e Métodos: Foram utilizadas diretrizes da IADT publicadas nos anos 2007, 2012 e 2020 e artigos relacionados à avulsão dentária, pesquisados nas plataformas digitais Pubmed e Google Acadêmico. Abstract

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is essential for calcium and phosphate homeostasis in odontogenesis-related cells. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms in the gene encoding PTH, and dental caries in Brazilian children. Three hundred and fifty-three children (170 boys and 183 girls, age ranging from 8 to 11 years old) were included in this study. The International System for Detection and Assessment of Carious Lesions (ICDAS) was used for diagnosis of dental caries. Visible biofilm was also evaluated during the clinical examination. Genomic DNA was extracted from saliva for real-time PCR to evaluate the single nucleotide polymorphisms rs6256, rs307247 and rs694 in PTH gene. Dental caries was classified in ICDAS0 vs. ICDAS1−6 or ICDAS1−2 vs. ICDAS3−6. Chi-square test, binary logistic regression adjusted by biofilm and haplotype analyses were performed (p < 0.05). Biofilm was associated with dental caries (p < 0.05). There were no associations between dental caries and rs6256, rs307247, rs694 in none of the analyses performed (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the present study supports that the single nucleotide polymorphisms rs6256, rs307247, and rs694 in the PTH-encoding gene are not associated with dental caries in Brazilian children.

Abstract

Introduction: Sella turcica is an intracranial bone depression located in the sphenoid bone that houses the pituitary gland, which is an important gland in the secretion of various hormones. Literature review: Variations in the morphology of the sella turcica can alter the morphology of the pituitary, which can lead to changes in hormone secretion and dental anomalies. There are studies that evaluate the sella turcica using metric methods and other studies that evaluate them with non-metric methods. Researchers use lateral radiographs and/or computed tomography to visualize the sella turcica. The purpose of this brief review was to revise the methods used to study sella turcica morphology in dental research. The literature search for sella turcica morphology was carried out with the following key words (sella turcica, bridging of sella, size, shape of sella turcica and sella turcica morphology) and using the search engines (Pubmed and Google scholar). According to the research, three methods of analyzing the sella turcica were observed, according to the measurements (length, width, diameter, area, depht, sella height posterior, sella height anterior), degree of calcification (class I / type I / group I, class II / type II / group II, class III / type III / group III) and format (normal sella turcica, sella turcica bridge type A – ribbon-like fusion, sella turcica bridge type B – extension of the clinoid processes, incomplete bridge, hypertrophic posterior clinoid process, hypotrophic posterior clinoid process, irregularity in the posterior part of the sella turcica, pyramidal shape of the dorsum sella, double contour of the floor, oblique anterior wall, oblique contour of the floor) of the sella turcica. ABSTRACTPurposeThe aim of this study was to assess whether hypoestrogenism influenced the gene expression (mRNA) of Mmp-8and Mmp-13at maxilla and mandible growth sites.Materials and MethodsTwelve female Wistarrats in the prepubertal period (21 days-old) were randomly divided into 2 groups: OVX (which underwent ovariectomy surgery – hypoestrogenism animals) and SHAM (which underwent fictitious ovariectomy surgery – control animals). At 45 days-old (during puberty) euthanasia was performed. The growth centres (palatal suture, mandibular condyle, coronoid process, mandibular angle, symphysis, and mandibular parasymphysis) were dissected. For gene expression analysis, the RNA was extracted and cDNA synthesis was performed on total RNA. The real-time PCR technique was used to analyse the gene expression of Mmp-8and Mmp-13. Statistical analysis was performed with a level of significance of 5%.ResultsStatistical significance was observed only between the mandibular condyle and the mRNA expression of Mmp-8(p = 0.03), where there was an increase in the expression of this gene in the OVX group.ConclusionHypoestrogenism upregulated Mmp-8gene expression in the mandibular condyle during puberty period of the rats in the study. This may be one of the mechanisms in which oestrogen is involved in mandible growth and development during prepubertal period.

Abstract

Objective: To compare the amount of extruded debris in primary molars after manual instrumentation or WaveOne system. Material and Methods: Twenty-five primary molar roots with mild and moderate root angulation (between 10 to 20°), having at least two thirds of root length, no pathological reabsorption (internal or external) or furcation perforation, were selected for this study. Roots were standardized at 6 mm in length, inserted and stabilized in individual acrylic resin blocks with random distribution into two groups: G1 (n=12): Instrumentation with crown-down manual technique; and G2 (n=13): instrumentation with WaveOne system. Blocks with roots were weighed before and after instrumentation, allowing the calculation of extruded debris using both mechanical preparations. Data analysis was performed by Bioestat 4.0 statistical software using Mann Whitney test. Results: The mean weight of extruded debris in manual instrumentation and WaveOne system have no significant difference (p=0.8704). Conclusion: Manual crown-down instrumentation or WaveOne system does not influence the amount of extruded debris after mechanical preparation, suggesting that both techniques were effective in canals clean causing similar extrused debris, however more studies with largest sample should be done to better validate this evidence.
