- Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyse how demographic parameters (intrinsic growth rate r and carrying capacity K ) and population density (N ) relate to occurrence probability (Pocc )., The objective of this study is to analyse how demographic parameters (intrinsic growth rate r and carrying capacity K ) and population density (N ) relate to occurrence probability (Pocc ). We hypothesized that these relationships vary with species’ competitive ability. Demographic parameters, density, and occurrence probability were estimated for 108 tree species from four temperate forest inventory surveys (Québec, western USA, France and Switzerland)., 1155are found if, and only if, the local environment is within their ‘demographic’ niche; i.e. where their intrinsic growth rate is positive. However, several ecological processes can lead to deviations from this expectation: source–sink dynamics, non-equilibrium dynamics, and biotic interactions (Pulliam 2000). Competitive interactions could, for example, exclude a weak competitor from its optimal environmental condi-tions, while it might persist in more extreme environments that the dominant competitors cannot occupy (Loehle Ecography 37: 1155–1166, 2014 doi: 10.1111/ecog.00836© 2014 The Authors. The niche is usually defined as the combi-nation of environmental conditions that allow a species to persist (Hutchinson 1957).
