We report results on deep Jansky Very Large Array A-configuration observations at 22 GHz of the hotspots of the radio galaxies 3C227 and 3C445. Synchrotron emission in the optical on scales up to a few kpc was reported for the four hotspots. Our VLA observations point out the presence of unresolved regions with upper limit to their linear size of about 100 pc. This is the first time that such compact components in hotspots have been detected in a mini-sample, indicating that they are not a peculiar characteristic of a few individual hotspots. The polarization may reach values up to 70 per cent in compact (about 0.1 kpc scale) regions within the hotspot, indicating a highly ordered magnetic field with size up to a hundred parsecs. On larger scales, the average polarization of the hotspot component is about 30-45 per cent, suggesting the presence of a significant random field component, rather than an ordered magnetic field. This is further supported by the displacement between the peaks in polarized intensity and in total intensity images that is observed in all the four hotspots. The electric vector position angle is not constant, but changes arbitrarily in the central part of the hotspot regions, whereas it is usually perpendicular to the total intensity contours of the outermost edge of the hotspot structure, likely marking the large-scale shock front. The misalignment between X-ray and radio-to-optical emission suggests that the former is tracing the current particle acceleration, whereas the latter marks older shock fronts., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, published in MNRAS

The acceleration and radiative processes active in low-power radio hotspots are investigated by means of new deep near-infrared (NIR) and optical VLT observations, complemented with archival, high-sensitivity VLT, radio VLA and X-ray Chandra data. For the three studied radio galaxies (3C 105, 3C 195 and 3C 227), we confirm the detection of NIR/optical counterparts of the observed radio hotspots. We resolve multiple components in 3C 227 West and in 3C 105 South and characterize the diffuse NIR/optical emission of the latter. We show that the linear size of this component ($\gtrsim$4 kpc) makes 3C 105 South a compelling case for particles' re-acceleration in the post-shock region. Modeling of the radio-to-X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) of 3C 195 South and 3C 227 W1 gives clues on the origin of the detected X-ray emission. In the context of inverse Compton models, the peculiarly steep synchrotron curve of 3C 195 South sets constraints on the shape of the radiating particles' spectrum that are testable with better knowledge of the SED shape at low ($\lesssim$GHz) radio frequencies and in X-rays. The X-ray emission of 3C 227 W1 can be explained with an additional synchrotron component originating in compact ($<$100 pc) regions, such those revealed by radio observations at 22 GHz, provided that efficient particle acceleration ($\gamma\gtrsim$10$^7$) is ongoing. We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) polarization observations at 97.5 GHz of the southern hot spot of the radio galaxy 3C 445. The hot spot structure is dominated by two bright components enshrouded by diffuse emission. Both components show fractional polarization between 30 and 40 per cent, suggesting the presence of shocks. The polarized emission of the western component has a displacement of about 0.5 kpc outward with respect to the total intensity emission, and may trace the surface of a front shock. Strong polarization is observed in a thin strip marking the ridge of the hot spot structure visible from radio to optical. No significant polarization is detected in the diffuse emission between the main components, suggesting a highly disordered magnetic field likely produced by turbulence and instabilities in the downstream region that may be at the origin of the extended optical emission observed in this hot spot. The polarization properties support a scenario in which a combination of both multiple and intermittent shock fronts due to jet dithering, and spatially distributed stochastic second-order Fermi acceleration processes are present in the hot spot complex., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

We present the results of a multi-wavelength study of a sample of high-redshift Radio Loud (RL) Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasars. This way we extend to higher redshift previous studies on the radio properties, and broadband optical colors of these objects. We have se- lected a sample of 22 RL BAL quasars with 3.6 z 4.8 cross-correlating the FIRST radio survey with the SDSS. Flux densities between 1.25 and 9.5 GHz have been collected with the JVLA and Effelsberg-100m telescopes for 15 BAL and 14 non-BAL quasars used as compar- ison sample. We determine the synchrotron peak frequency, constraining their age. A large number of GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and High Frequency Peakers (HFP) sources has been found in both samples (80% for BAL and 71% for non-BAL QSOs), not suggesting a younger age for BAL quasars. The spectral index distribution provides information about the orientation of these sources, and we find statistically similar distributions for the BAL and non-BAL quasars in contrast to work done on lower redshift samples. Our sample may be too small to convincingly find the same effect, or might represent a real evolutionary effect based on the large fraction of young sources. We also study the properties of broadband colors in both optical (SDSS) and near- and mid-infrared (UKIDSS and WISE) bands, finding that also at high redshift BAL quasars tend to be optically redder than non-BAL quasars. We present VLBI observations, carried out with the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (EVN), of SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3, a radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (RLNLS1) characterized by a steep radio spectrum. The source, compact at Very Large Array (VLA) resolution, is resolved on the milliarcsec scale, showing a central region plus two extended structures. The relatively high brightness temperature of all components (5x10^6-1.3x10^8 K) supports the hypothesis that the radio emission is non-thermal and likely produced by a relativistic jet and/or small radio lobes. The observed radio morphology, the lack of a significant core and the presence of a low frequency (230 MHz) spectral turnover are reminiscent of the Compact Steep Spectrum sources (CSS). However, the linear size of the source (~0.5kpc) measured from the EVN map is lower than the value predicted using the turnover/size relation valid for CSS sources (~6kpc). This discrepancy can be explained by an additional component not detected in our observations, accounting for about a quarter of the total source flux density, combined to projection effects. The low core-dominance of the source (CD<0.29) confirms that SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3 is not a blazar, i.e. the relativistic jet is not pointing towards the observer. This supports the idea that SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3 may belong to the "parent population" of flat-spectrum RLNLS1 and favours the hypothesis of a direct link between RLNLS1 and compact, possibly young, radio galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

This paper presents 1.4-GHz radio continuum observations of 15 very extended radio galaxies. These sources are so large that most interferometers lose partly their structure and total flux density. Therefore, single-dish detections are required to fill in the central (u,v) gap of interferometric data and obtain reliable spectral index patterns across the structures, and thus also an integrated radio continuum spectrum. We have obtained such 1.4-GHz maps with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope and combined them with the corresponding maps available from the NVSS. The aggregated data allow us to produce high-quality images, which can be used to obtain physical parameters of the mapped sources. Broad absorption line quasars are among the objects presenting the fastest outflows. The launching mechanism itself is not completely understood. Models in which they could be launched from the accretion disk, and then curved and accelerated by the effect of the radiation pressure, have been presented. We conducted an extensive observational campaign, from radio to optical band, to collect information about their nature and test the models present in the literature, the main dichotomy being between a young scenario and an orientation one. We found a variety of possible orientations, morphologies, and radio ages, not converging to a particular explanation for the BAL phenomenon. From our latest observations in the m- and mm-band, we obtained an indication of a lower dust abundance with respect to normal quasars, thus suggesting a possible feedback process on the host galaxy. Also, in the low-frequency regime we confirmed the presence of CSS components, sometime in conjunction with a GPS one already detected at higher frequencies. Following this, about 70% of our sample turns out to be in a GPS or CSS+GPS phase. We conclude that fast outflows, responsible for the BAL features, can be more easily present among objects going through a restarting or just-started radio phase, where radiation pressure can substantially contribute to their acceleration., Comment: accepted for publication on AN

Broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) are objects showing absorption from relativistic outflows, with velocities up to 0.2c. These manifest, in about 15% of quasars, as absorption troughs on the blue side of UV emission lines, such as C iv and Mg ii. In this work, we complement the information collected in the cm band for our previously presented sample of radio loud BAL QSOs with new observations at m and mm bands. Our aim is to verify the presence of old, extended radio components in the MHz range, and probe the emission of dust (linked to star formation) in the mm domain. We observed 5 sources from our sample, already presenting hints of low-frequency emission, with the GMRT at 235 and 610 MHz. Other 17 sources (more than half the sample) were observed with bolometer cameras at IRAM-30m and APEX. All sources observed with the GMRT present extended emission at a scale of tens of kpc. In some cases these measurements allow us to identify a second component in the SED, at frequencies below 1.4 GHz, beyond the one already studied in the GHz domain. In the mm-band, only one source shows emission clearly ascribable to dust. Upper limits were obtained for the remaining targets. These findings confirm that BAL QSOs can also be present in old radio sources, or even in restarting ones, where favourable conditions for the outflow launching/acceleration are present. A suggestion that these outflows could be precursors of the jet comes from the fact that ~70% of our sample can be considered in a GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) or Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS)+GPS phase. This would confirm the idea proposed by other authors that these outflows could be recollimated to form the jet. Comparing with previous works in the literature, dust emission seems to be weaker than the what expected in 'normal' QSOs, suggesting that a feedback mechanism could inhibit star formation in radio-loud BAL QSOs., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We started a follow-up investigation of the Deep X-ray Radio Blazar Survey objects with declination >-10 deg. We undertook a survey with the EVN at 5GHz to make the first images of a complete sample of weak blazars, aiming at a comparison between high- and low-power samples of blazars. All of the 87 sources observed were detected. Point-like sources are found in 39 cases, and 48 show core-jet structure. According to the spectral indices previously obtained, 58 sources show a flat spectral index, and 29 sources show a steep spectrum or a spectrum peaking at a frequency around 1-2 GHz. Adding to the DXRBS objects we observed those already observed with ATCA in the southern sky, we found that 14 blazars and a SSRQ, are associated to gamma-ray emitters. We found that 56 sources can be considered blazars. We also detected 2 flat spectrum NLRGs. About 50% of the blazars associated to a gamma-ray object are BL Lacs, confirming that they are more likely detected among blazars gamma-emitters. We confirm the correlation found between the source core flux density and the gamma-ray photon fluxes down to fainter flux densities. We also found that weak blazars are also weaker gamma-ray emitters compared to bright blazars. Twenty-two sources are SSRQs or CSSs, and 7 are GPSs. The available X-ray ROSAT observations allow us to suggest that CSS and GPS quasars are not obscured by large column of cold gas surrounding the nuclei. Broad absorption lines (BALs) are present in the spectra of ~20% of quasars (QSOs); this indicates fast outflows (up to 0.2c) that intercept the observer's line of sight. These QSOs can be distinguished again into radio-loud (RL) BAL QSOs and radio-quiet (RQ) BAL QSOs. The first are very rare, even four times less common than RQ BAL QSOs. The reason for this is still unclear and leaves open questions about the nature of the BAL-producing outflows and their connection with the radio jet. We explored the spectroscopic characteristics of RL and RQ BAL QSOs with the aim to find a possible explanation for the rarity of RL BAL QSOs. We identified two samples of genuine BAL QSOs from SDSS optical spectra, one RL and one RQ, in a suitable redshift interval (2.5$

We present SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3, a new case of radio-loud narrow line Seyfert 1 (RL NLS1) with a relatively high radio power (P1.4GHz=2.1x10^25 W Hz^-1) and large radioloudness parameter (R1.4=600+/-100). The radio source is compact with a linear size below ~1.4 kpc but, contrary to most of the RL NLS1 discovered so far with such a high R1.4, its radio spectrum is very steep (alpha=0.93) and not supporting a 'blazar-like' nature. Both the small mass of the central super-massive black-hole and the high accretion rate relative to the Eddington limit estimated for this object (3.2x10^7 Msun and 0.27, respectively, with a formal error of ~0.4 dex on both quantities) are typical of the class of NLS1. Through a modeling of the spectral energy distribution of the source we have found that the galaxy hosting SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3 is undergoing a quite intense star-formation (SFR=50 Msun y^-1) which, however, is expected to contribute only marginally (~1 per cent) to the observed radio emission. The radio properties of SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3 are remarkably similar to those of compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio sources, a class of AGN mostly composed by young radio galaxies. This may suggest a direct link between these two classes of AGN, with the CSS sources possibly representing the misaligned version (the so-called parent population) of RL NLS1 showing blazar characteristics., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present follow-up observations at 5, 8 and 30 GHz of the K-band Northern Wide Survey (KNoWS) 20 GHz Bright Sample, performed with the 32-m Medicina Radio Telescope and the 32-m Torun Radio Telescope. The KNoWS sources were selected in the Northern Polar Cap (Delta > 72 deg) and have a flux density limit S(20GHz) = 115 mJy. We include NVSS 1.4 GHz measurements to derive the source radio spectra between 1.4 and 30 GHz. Based on optical identifications, 68 per cent of the sources are QSOs, and 27 per cent are radio galaxies. A redshift measurement is available for 58 per cent of the sources. The radio spectral properties of the different source populations are found to be in agreement with those of other high-frequency selected samples., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables. Broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) belong to a class of objects not well-understood as yet. Their UV spectra show BALs in the blue wings of the UV resonance lines, owing to ionized gas with outflow velocities up to 0.2 c. They can have radio emission that is difficult to characterize and that needs to be studied at various wavelengths and resolutions. We aim to study the pc-scale properties of their synchrotron emission and, in particular, to determine their core properties. We performed observations in the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) technique, using both the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz, and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 5 and 8.4 GHz to map the pc-scale structure of the brightest radio-loud objects of our sample, allowing a proper morphological interpretation. A variety of morphologies have been found: 9 BAL QSOs on a total of 11 observed sources have a resolved structure. Core-jet, double, and symmetric objects are present, suggesting different orientations. In some cases the sources can be young GPS or CSS. The projected linear size of the sources, also considering observations from our previous work for the same objects, can vary from tens of pc to hundreds of kpc. In some cases, a diffuse emission can be supposed from the missing flux-density with respect to previous lower resolution observations. Finally, the magnetic field strength does not significantly differ from the values found in the literature for radio sources with similar sizes. These results are not easily interpreted with the youth scenario for BAL QSOs, in which they are generally compact objects still expelling a dust cocoon. The variety of orientations, morphologies, and extensions found are presumably related to different possible angles for the BAL producing outflows, with respect to the jet axis. The dying radio sources represent a very interesting and largely unexplored stage of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) evolution. They are considered to be very rare, and almost all of the few known ones were found in galaxy clusters. However, considering the small number detected so far, it has not been possible to draw any firm conclusions about their X-ray environment. We present X-ray observations performed with the Chandra satellite of the three galaxy clusters Abell 2276, ZwCl 1829.3+6912, and RX J1852.1+5711, which harbor at their center a dying radio source with an ultra-steep spectrum that we recently discovered. We analyzed the physical properties of the X-ray emitting gas surrounding these elusive radio sources. We determined the global X-ray properties of the clusters, derived the azimuthally averaged profiles of metal abundance, gas temperature, density, and pressure. Furthermore, we estimated the total mass profiles. The large-scale X-ray emission is regular and spherical, suggesting a relaxed state for these systems. Indeed, we found that the three clusters are also characterized by significant enhancements in the metal abundance and declining temperature profiles toward the central region. Accounting for ~20% of the total QSO population, Broad Absorption Line QSOs are still an unsolved problem in the AGN context. They present wide troughs in the UV spectrum, due to material with velocities up to 0.2 c toward the observer. The two models proposed in literature try to explain them as a particular phase of the evolution of QSOs or as normal QSOs, but seen from a particular line of sight. We built a statistically complete sample of Radio-Loud BAL QSOs, and carried out an observing campaign to piece together the whole spectrum in the cm wavelength domain, and highlight all the possible differences with respect to a comparison sample of Radio-Loud non-BAL QSOs. VLBI observations at high angular resolution have been performed, to study the pc-scale morphology of these objects. Finally, we tried to detect a possible dust component with observations at mm-wavelengths. Results do not seem to indicate a young age for all BAL QSOs. Instead a variety of orientations and morphologies have been found, constraining the outflows foreseen by the orientation model to have different possible angles with respect to the jet axis.

During 2010-2011, the Medicina 32-m dish hosted the 7-feed 18-26.5 GHz receiver built for the Sardinia Radio Telescope, with the goal to perform its commissioning. This opportunity was exploited to carry out a pilot survey at 20 GHz over the area for {\delta} > + 72.3{\deg}. This paper describes all the phases of the observations, as they were performed using new hardware and software facilities. The map-making and source extraction procedures are illustrated. A customised data reduction tool was used during the follow-up phase, which produced a list of 73 confirmed sources down to a flux density of 115 mJy. The resulting catalogue, here presented, is complete above 200 mJy. Source counts are in agreement with those provided by the AT20G survey. This pilot activity paves the way to a larger project, the K-band Northern Wide Survey (KNoWS), whose final aim is to survey the whole Northern Hemisphere down to a flux limit of 50 mJy (5{\sigma})., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. The origin of broad-absorption-line quasars (BAL QSOs) is still an open issue. Accounting for ~20% of the QSO population, these objects present broad absorption lines in their optical spectra generated from outflows with velocities up to 0.2c. In this work we present the results of a multi-frequency study of a well-defined radio-loud BAL QSO sample, and a comparison sample of radio-loud non-BAL QSOs, both selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We aim to test which of the currently-popular models for the BAL phenomenon - `orientation' or 'evolutionary' - best accounts for the radio properties of BAL quasars. Observations from 1.4 to 43 GHz have been obtained with the VLA and Effelsberg telescopes, and data from 74 to 408 MHz have been compiled from the literature. The fractions of candidate GHz-peaked sources are similar in the two samples (36\pm12% vs 23\pm8%), suggesting that BAL QSOs are not generally younger than non-BAL QSOs. BAL and non-BAL QSOs show a large range of spectral indices, consistent with a broad range of orientations. There is weak evidence (91% confidence) that the spectral indices of the BAL QSOs are steeper than those of non-BAL QSOs, mildly favouring edge-on orientations. At a higher level of significance (\geq97%), the spectra of BAL QSOs are not flatter than those of non-BAL QSOs, which suggests that a polar orientation is not preferred., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We investigate the nature of the broad-band emission associated with the low-power radio hotspots 3C105 South and 3C445 South. Both hotspot regions are resolved in multiple radio/optical components. High-sensitivity radio VLA, NIR/optical VLT and HST, and X-ray Chandra data have been used to construct the multi-band spectra of individual hotspot components. The radio-to-optical spectra of both hotspot regions are well fitted by a synchrotron model with steep spectral indices ~0.8 and break frequencies 10^12-10^14 Hz. 3C105 South is resolved in two optical components: a primary one, aligned with the jet direction and possibly marking the first jet impact with the surrounding medium, and a secondary, further out from the jet and extended in a direction perpendicular to it. This secondary region is interpreted as a splatter-spot formed by the deflection of relativistic plasma from the primary hotspot. Radio and optical images of 3C445 South show a spectacular 10-kpc arc-shape structure characterized by two main components, and perpendicular to the jet direction. HST images in I and B bands further resolve the brightest components into thin elongated features. In both 3C105 South and 3C445 South the main hotspot components are enshrouded by diffuse optical emission on scale of several kpcs, indicating that very high energy particles, possibly injected at strong shocks, are continuously re-accelerated in situ by additional acceleration mechanisms. The Simultaneous Medicina-{\it Planck} Experiment (SiMPlE) is aimed at observing a selected sample of 263 extragalactic and Galactic sources with the Medicina 32-m single dish radio telescope in the same epoch as the Planck satellite observations. The data acquired with a frequency coverage down to 5 GHz, also combined with Planck at frequencies above 30 GHz, will constitute a useful reference catalogue of bright sources over the whole Northern hemisphere. Furthermore, source observations performed in different epochs and comparison with other catalogues allow the investigation of source variabilities on different timescales. In this work, we describe the sample selection, the on-going data acquisition campaign, the data reduction procedures, the developed tools, and the comparison with other data-sets. We present the data at 5 and 8.3 GHz for the SiMPlE Northern Sample consisting of 79 sources with $\delta \geq 45^\circ$ selected in our catalogue and observed during the first 6 months of the project. We present the study of five `dying' nearby radio galaxies belonging to the WENSS minisurvey and to the B2 bright catalogs: WNB1734+6407, WNB1829+6911, WNB1851+5707, B2 0120+33, and B2 1610+29. These sources have been selected on the basis of their extremely steep broad-band radio spectra. The modeling of the integrated spectra and the deep spectral index images obtained with the VLA confirmed that in these sources the central engine has ceased to be active for a significant fraction of their lifetime although their extended lobes have not yet completely faded away. We found that WNB1851+5707 is in reality composed by two distinct dying galaxies, which appear blend together as a single source in the WENSS. In the cases of WNB1829+6911 and B2 0120+33, the fossil radio lobes are seen in conjunction with a currently active core. A very faint core is detected also in a MERLIN image of WNB1851+5707a, one of the two dying sources composing WNB1851+5707. We found that all sources of our sample are located (at least in projection) at the center of an X-ray emitting cluster. Our results suggest that the duration of the dying phase for a radio source in cluster can be significantly higher with respect to that of a radio galaxy in the field. The simplest interpretation is that the low-frequency emission from the fading radio lobes last longer if their expansion is somewhat reduced or even stopped. Another possibility is that the occurrence of dying sources is higher in galaxy clusters. Radio sources in dense environment, like e.g. the center of cooling core clusters, may have a peculiar accretion mode which results in a bursting duty cycle sequence of active and quiescent periods. This result could have important implications for theories of the life cycles of radio sources and AGN feedback in clusters of galaxies but awaits confirmation from future observations of larger samples of objects., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. We completed observations with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope to measure the polarised emission from a complete sample of Compact Steep-Spectrum sources. We observed the sources at four different frequencies. We complemented these measurements with polarisation parameters at 1.4 GHz derived from the NVSS. Previous single dish measurements were taken from the catalogue of Tabara and Inoue. The depolarisation index DP was computed for four pairs of frequencies. A drop in the fractional polarisation appeared in the radio emission when observing at frequencies below about 2 GHz. Rotation measures were derived for about 25% of the sources in the sample. The values range from about -20 rad/m**2} found for 3C138 to 3900 rad/m**2 in 3C119. In all cases, the lambda**2 law is closely followed. The presence of a foreground screen as predicted by the Tribble model or with ``partial coverage'' as defined by ourselves can explain the polarimetric behaviour of the CSS sources detected in polarisation by the present observations. Indication of repolarisation at lower frequencies was found for some sources. A case of possible variability in the fractional polarisation is also suggested. The most unexpected result was found for the distribution of the fractional polarisations versus the linear sizes of the sources. Our results appear to disagree with the findings of Cotton and collaborators and Fanti and collaborators for the B3-VLA sample of CSS sources, the so-called ``Cotton effect''. Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs) have been found to be associated with extremely compact radio sources. These reduced dimensions can be either due to projection effects or these objects might actually be intrinsically small. Exploring these two hypotheses is important to understand the nature and origin of the BAL phenomenon because orientation effects are an important discriminant between the different models proposed to explain this phenomenon. The study of the linear and circular polarization in AGN allows one to gain detailed information about the properties of the magnetic fields in these objects. However, especially the observation of circular polarization (CP) with single-dish radio-telescopes is usually difficult because of the weak signals to be expected. Normally CP is derived as the (small) difference of two large numbers (LHC and RHC); hence an accurate calibration is absolutely necessary. Our aim is to improve the calibration accuracy to include the Stokes parameter V in the common single-dish polarimetric measurements, allowing a full Stokes study of the source under examination. A detailed study, up to the 2nd order, of the Mueller matrix elements in terms of cross-talk components allows us to reach the accuracy necessary to study circular polarization. The new calibration method has been applied to data taken at the 100-m Effelsberg radio-telescope during regular test observations of extragalactic sources at 2.8, 3.6, 6 and 11 cm. The D-terms in phase and amplitude appear very stable with time and the few known values of circular polarization have been confirmed. It is shown that, whenever a classical receiver and a multiplying polarimeter are available, the proposed calibration scheme allows one to include Stokes V in standard single-dish polarimetric observations as difference of two native circular outputs., Comment: 10 pages, to be published in A&A

Young radio-loud active galactic nuclei form an important tool to investigate the evolution of extragalactic radio sources. To study the early phases of expanding radio sources, we have constructed CORALZ, a sample of 25 compact ($\theta<2"$) radio sources associated with nearby ($z<0.16$) galaxies. In this paper we determine the morphologies, linear sizes, and put first constraints on the lobe expansion speeds of the sources in the sample. We observed the radio sources from the CORALZ sample with MERLIN at 1.4 GHz or 1.6 GHz, the EVN at 1.6 GHz, and global VLBI at 1.6 GHz and/or 5.0 GHz. Radio maps, morphological classifications, and linear sizes are presented for all sources in the CORALZ sample. We have determined a first upper limit to the expansion velocity of one of the sources, which is remarkably low compared to the brighter GPS sources at higher redshifts, indicating a relation between radio luminosity and expansion speed, in agreement with analytical models. In addition we present further strong evidence that the spectral turnovers in GPS and CSS sources are caused by synchrotron self-absorption (SSA): the CORALZ sources are significantly offset from the well-known correlation between spectral peak frequency and angular size, but this correlation is recovered after correcting for the flux-density dependence, as predicted by SSA theory., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 21 pages, 14 figures

We present new high spatial resolution VLT and VLA observations of a sample of nine low-power (P_{1.4 GHz} < 10^{25} W/Hz) radio hotspots. Infrared/optical emission is definitely detected in four of the nine observed objects, resulting in a detection rate of at least 45%. This emission is interpreted as synchrotron radiation from the electrons accelerated in the hot spots. The integrated spectra of these hotspots reveal typical break frequencies between 10^5 and 10^6 GHz, two orders of magnitude higher than typically found in high-power hotspots. This supports the idea that in low-power hotspots with their relatively low magnetic field strengths electrons emit most of their energy at higher frequencies. A simple spectral ageing analysis would imply that the emitting electrons have been injected into the hotspot volume less than ~10^3 years ago. We discuss possible scenarios to explain the lack of older electrons in the hotspot region. In particular, the extended morphology of the NIR/optical emission would suggest that efficient re-acceleration mechanisms rejuvenate the electron populations., Comment: paper accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 figures, 5 tables. We present new polarisation observations at 13 cm, acquired using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), of 65 sources, from the B3-VLA sample of Compact Steep-Spectrum sources. These new data are combined with our VLA polarisation data, at 3.6, 6 and, 21 cm, presented in a previous paper. Due to the multi-channel frequency capabilities of the WSRT, these new 13 cm observations enable a more reliable determination of integrated Rotation Measures, and of depolarisation behaviour with wavelength. The new data are inconsistent with the depolarisation models that we used earlier, and we propose an alternative model which seems to work properly. We present multi-frequency observations of a sample of 15 radio-emitting Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs), covering a spectral range between 74 MHz and 43 GHz. They display mostly convex radio spectra which typically peak at about 1-5 GHz (in the observer's rest-frame), flatten at MHz frequencies, probably due to synchrotron self-absorption, and become steeper at high frequencies, i.e., >~ 20 GHz. VLA 22-GHz maps (HPBW ~ 80 mas) show unresolved or very compact sources, with linear projected sizes of <= 1 kpc. About 2/3 of the sample look unpolarised or weakly polarised at 8.4 GHz, frequency in which reasonable upper limits could be obtained for polarised intensity. Statistical comparisons have been made between the spectral index distributions of samples of BAL and non-BAL QSOs, both in the observed and the rest-frame, finding steeper spectra among non-BAL QSOs. However constraining this comparison to compact sources results in no significant differences between both distributions. This comparison is consistent with BAL QSOs not being oriented along a particular line of sight. In addition, our analysis of the spectral shape, variability and polarisation properties shows that radio BAL QSOs share several properties common to young radio sources like Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) or Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources., Comment: 18 pages, 11 Postscript figures, 12 Tables. Up till now very few dying sources were known, presumably because the dying phase is short at centimeter wavelengths. We therefore have tried to improve the statistics on sources that have ceased to be active, or are intermittently active. The latter sources would partly consist of a fossil radio plasma left over from an earlier phase of activity, plus a recently restarted core and radio jets. Improving the statistics of dying sources will give us a better handle on the evolution of radio sources, in particular the frequency and time scales of radio activity. We have used the WENSS and NVSS surveys, in order to find sources with steep spectral indices, associated with nearby elliptical galaxies. In the cross correlation we presently used only unresolved sources, with flux densities at 1.4 GHz larger than 10 mJy. The eleven candidates thus obtained were observed with the VLA in various configurations, in order to confirm the steepness of the spectra, and to check whether active structures like flat-spectrum cores and jets are present, perhaps at low levels. We estimated the duration of the active and relic phases by modelling the integrated radio spectra using the standard models of spectral evolution. We have found six dying sources and three restarted sources, while the remaining two candidates remain unresolved also with the new VLA data and may be Compact Steep Spectrum sources, with an unusually steep spectrum. The typical age of the active phase, as derived by spectral fits, is in the range 10^7 - 10^8 years. We present radio observations at frequencies ranging from 240 to 8460 MHz of the radio galaxy 4C29.30 (J0840+2949) using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Effelsberg telescope. We report the existence of weak extended emission with an angular size of $\sim$520 arcsec (639 kpc) within which a compact edge-brightened double-lobed source with a size of 29 arcsec (36 kpc) is embedded. We determine the spectrum of the inner double from 240 to 8460 MHz and show that it has a single power-law spectrum with a spectral index of $\sim$0.8. Its spectral age is estimated to be $\lapp$33 Myr. The extended diffuse emission has a steep spectrum with a spectral index of $\sim$1.3 and a break frequency $\lapp$240 MHz. The spectral age is $\gapp$200 Myr, suggesting that the extended diffuse emission is due to an earlier cycle of activity. We reanalyse archival x-ray data from Chandra and suggest that the x-ray emission from the hotspots consists of a mixture of nonthermal and thermal components, the latter being possibly due to gas which is shock heated by the jets from the host galaxy., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We selected from VLA-FIRST a sample of 94 objects starlike in SDSSS, and with APM colour O-E>2, i.e. consistent with their being high-z QSOs. 78 candidates were classified spectroscopically from published data (mainly SDSS) or observations reported here. The fractions of QSOs (51/78) and z > 3 QSOs (23/78) are comparable to those found in other photometric searches for high-z QSOs. We confirm that O-E>2 ensures inclusion of all QSOs with 3.7 < z < 4.4. The fraction of broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs for 2 < z < 4.4 is 27+-10 per cent (7/26), and the estimated BAL fraction for radio loud (RL) QSOs is at least as high as for optically selected QSOs (about 13 per cent). The high BAL fraction and the high fraction of LoBALs in our sample are likely due to the red colour selection. The space density of RL QSOs for 3.7 < z < 4.4, MAB (1450 A) < -26.6 and P(1.4 GHz) > 10^25.7 W Hz^(-1) is 1.7+-0.6 Gpc^(-3). Adopting a RL fraction 13.4+-3 per cent, this corresponds to rho = 12.5+-5.6 Gpc^(-3), in good agreement with the SDSS QSO luminosity function in Fan et al. (2001). We note the unusual QSO FIRST 1413+4505 (z=3.11), which shows strong associated Lyalpha absorption and an extreme observed luminosity, L about 2 x 10^(15) solar luminosities., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 9 figures and 6 tables; Table 2 is in landscape format

Signatures of the re-occurrence of activity in radio-loud AGNs, indicated either by the so-called double-double or X-shaped structures, have been observed in a number of radio sources. All such objects known to date have linear sizes of the order of a megaparsec. A number of the sources that are appreciably more compact than this, but that exhibit hints of a past phase of activity, were found in the VLA FIRST survey. Their structures show symmetric relic lobes straddling relatively bright, unresolved cores. Observations of the cores of 15 such structures with MERLIN at 5 GHz have shown that four of them are doubles or core-jets on the subarcsecond scale. Misalignments of \Delta PA \ga 30 degr. between the axis of the inner structure and the line connecting the fitted maxima of the arcminute-scale relic lobes are clearly visible in three of the four sources. From these results, we can infer that a rapid repositioning of the central engine in each of these three radio sources is the most plausible interpretation of the observed morphology and that a merger is most likely the original cause of such a repositioning. In the case of TXS 1033+026, the optical image extracted from the SDSS archives clearly suggests that two objects separated by only 2.7 kpc (projected onto the sky plane) are indeed merging. The inner parts of TXS 0818+214 and TXS 1312+563 could be interpreted as double-lobed, and consequently, these sources could be of the double-double type; but further multifrequency observations are necessary to provide support for such an interpretation., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, matches the version printed in Astronomy & Astrophysics, very minor correction of Table 1

We present observations of the most radio-luminous BAL quasar known, 1624+3758, at redshift z = 3.377. The quasar has several unusual properties: (1) The FeII UV191 1787-A emission line is very prominent. (2) The BAL trough (BALnicity index 2990 km/s) is detached by 21000 km/s and extends to velocity v = -29000 km/s. There are additional intrinsic absorbers at -1900 and -2800 km/s. (3) The radio rotation measure of the quasar, 18350 rad/m^2, is the second-highest known. The radio luminosity is P(1.4GHz) = 4.3 x 10^27 W/Hz (H0 = 50 km/s/Mpc, q0 = 0.5), radio loudness R* = 260. The radio source is compact (<~ 2.8 kpc) and the radio spectrum is GHz-peaked, consistent with it being relatively young. The width of the CIV emission line, in conjunction with the total optical luminosity, implies black-hole mass ~ 10^9 M(sun), L/L(Eddington) ~ 2. The high Eddington ratio, and the radio-loudness, place this quasar in one corner of Boroson's (2002) 2-component scheme for the classification of AGN, implying a very high accretion rate, and this may account for some of the unusual observed properties. A complex mini-BAL absorber at v = -3000 km/s is detected in each of CIV, NV and OVI. The blue and red components of the CIV doublet happen to be unblended, allowing both the covering factor and optical depth to be determined as a function of velocity. We report the recent discovery of three `dying' radio galaxies belonging to the WENSS minisurvey sample: WNB1734+6407, WNB1829+6911 and WNB1851+5707. These sources have been selected on the basis of their extremely steep broad-band radio spectra, which is a strong indication that these objects either belong to the rare class of dying radio galaxies or that we are observing `fossil' radio plasma remaining from a previous nuclear activity. Deep spectral index images obtained with the Very Large Array confirmed that in these sources the central engine has ceased to be active for a significant fraction of their lifetime although their extended lobes have not yet completely faded away. In one case, WNB1829+6911, fossil radio lobes are seen in conjunction with newly restarting jets. We found that each source is located (at least in projection) at the center of an X-ray emitting cluster. We argue that their intriguing association with clusters implies that the pressure of the dense intracluster medium, perhaps a cooling flow, prevents quick liquidation of a fossil radio lobe through adiabatic expansion. Giant radio galaxies (GRGs), with linear sizes larger than 1 Mpc (H0=50 km/s/Mpc), represent the biggest single objects in the Universe. GRGs are rare among the entire population of radio galaxies (RGs) and their physical evolution is not well understood though for many years they have been of special interest for several reasons. The lobes of radio sources can compress cold gas clumps and trigger star or even dwarf galaxy formation, they can also transport gas from a host galaxy to large distances and seed the IGM with magnetic fields. Since GRGs have about 10 to 100 times larger sizes than normal RGs, their influence on the ambient medium is correspondingly wider and is pronounced on scales comparable to those of clusters of galaxies or larger. Therefore `giants' could play an important role in the process of large-scale structure formation in the Universe. We obtained spectra of 60 red, starlike objects (E< 18.8) identified with FIRST radio sources, S_{1.4GHz} > 1 mJy. Eight are QSOs with redshift z> 3.6.Combined with our pilot search (Benn et al 2002), our sample of 121 candidates yields a total of 18 z > 3.6 QSOs (10 of these with z > 4.0). 8% of candidates with S_{1.4GHz}< 10 mJy, and 37% of candidates with S_{1.4GHz}> 10 mJy are QSOs with z > 3.6. The surface density of E < 18.8, S_{1.4GHz} > 1mJy, z> 4 QSOs is 0.003 deg^{-2}. This is currently the only well-defined sample of radio-loud QSOs at z ~ 4 selected independently of radio spectral index. The QSOs are highly luminous in the optical (8 have M_B < -28, q_0 = 0.5, H_0 = 50 kms^{-1}Mpc^{-1}). The SEDs are as varied as those seen in optical searches for high-redshift QSOs, but the fraction of objects with weak (strongly self-absorbed) Ly alpha emission is marginally higher (3 out of 18) than for high-redshift QSOs from SDSS (5 out of 96)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 9 pages, Latex, 5 postscript figures, 1 landscape table (postscript)

ESO422-G028 denotes the very center cD-galaxy of the giant radio source B0503-286 (Saripalli et al. 1986, Subrahmanya and Hunstead, 1986). The angular extent of the associated radio structure is about 42.4 arcmin, which corresponds to a linear size of 1.89 Mpc (with Omega_M=0.27, Omega_Lambda=0.73, and H_0=71 km/s/Mpc). Here we present new high-frequency total-power and polarization radio maps obtained with the Effelsberg 100-m dish. We discuss, in terms of particle acceleration, the results from optical VLT observations of hot spots associated with radio galaxies. On the basis of observational and theoretical grounds, it is shown that: 1. relatively low radio-radio power hot spots are the optimum candidates for being detected at optical waves. This is supported by an unprecedented optical detection rate of 70% out of a sample of low radio power hot spots. 2. the shape of the synchrotron spectrum of hot spots is mainly determined by the strength of the magnetic field in the region. In particular, the break frequency, related to the age of the oldest electrons in the hot spots, is found to increase with decreasing synchrotron power and magnetic field strength. The so-called Spectral Curvature Parameter(SCP), when plotted versus the high-frequency spectral index ($alpha_{high}$) of synchrotron sources, provides crucial parameters on the continuum spectrum of synchrotron radiation without the more complex modeling of spectral ageing scenarios. An important merit of the SCP-$alpha$ diagram is the enhanced reliability of extracting multiple injection spectra, $alpha_{inj}$. Different from the colour-colour diagram, tracks of different $alpha_{inj}$s, especially when the synchrotron particles are young, exhibit less overlap and less smearing in the SCP-$alpha$ diagram. Three giant radio galaxies(GRGs) and a sample of Compact steep spectrum(CSS) souces are presented. GRGs exhibit asymmetries of their injection spectral indices $alpha_{inj}$ in the SCP-$alpha_{high}$ diagram. The obtained $alpha_{inj}$s and the trends in the sources are cross-checked with the literature and show remarkable confidence. Besides the spectral steepening, spectral flattening is prominent in the radio lobes. The spectral flattening is a clue to efficient re-acceleration processes in the lobes. It implies interaction with the surrounding intergalactic or intra-cluster medium is an important characteristic of GRGs. In the SW lobe of DA240, there is a clear sign of CI and KP/JP bifurcation at the source extremity. This indicates a highly relativistic energy transportation from the core or in situ acceleration in this typical FR I lobe. Our analysis proves, if exists, KP spectra imply the existence of strong $B_{sync}$ field with $B_{sync} > B_{CMB}$. In the CSS sources, our result confirms the CI model and $B_{sync} >> B_{CMB}$. We define a new complete sample of 13 optically-luminous radio quasars M_AB(1450 Angstrom) < -26.9 mag and log P_1.4 GHz(W/Hz) > 25.7 with redshift 3.8 < z < 4.5, obtained by cross-correlating the FIRST radio survey and the APM catalogue of POSS-I. We measure the space density to be 1.0 +/- 0.3 /Gpc^3, a factor 1.9 +/- 0.7 smaller than the space density of similar quasars at z=2. Using a new measurement of the radio-loud fraction of quasars we find that at z=4 the total space density of quasars with M_AB(1450 Angstrom) < -26.9 is 7.4 +/- 2.6/Gpc^3. This is a factor 1.8 +/- 0.8 less than the space density at z=2, found by the 2dF quasar survey. This (z=2)/(z=4) ratio, consistent with that of the radio-loud quasars, is significantly different from the ratio of about 10 found for samples including lower-luminosity quasars. GPS and CSS radio sources are the objects of choice to investigate the evolution of young radio-loud AGN. Previous investigations, mainly based on number counts and source size distributions, indicate that GPS/CSS sources decrease significantly in radio power when evolving into old, extended objects. We suggest this is preceded by a period of increase in radio luminosity, which lasts as long as the radio source is confined within the core-radius of its host galaxy. We have selected a sample of nearby compact radio sources, unbiased by radio spectrum, to determine their radio luminosity function, size distribution, dynamical ages, and emission line properties in a complete and homogeneous way. First results indicate that the large majority of objects (>80%) exhibit classical GPS/CSS radio spectra, and show structures consistent with the being compact double, or compact symmetric objects. We investigate the statistical properties of the polarized emission of extragalactic radio sources and estimate their contribution to the power spectrum of polarization fluctuations in the microwave region. The basic ingredients of our analysis are the NVSS polarization data, the multifrequency study of polarization properties of the B3-VLA sample (Mack et al. 2002) which has allowed us to quantify Faraday depolarization effects, and the 15 GHz survey by Taylor et al. (2001), which has provided strong constraints on the high-frequency spectral indices of sources. The polarization degree of both steep- and flat-spectrum at 1.4 GHz is found to be anti-correlated with the flux density. The median polarization degree at 1.4 GHz of both steep- and flat-spectrum sources brighter than $S(1.4 \hbox{GHz})=80 $mJy is $\simeq 2.2%$. The data by Mack et al. (2002) indicate a substantial mean Faraday depolarization at 1.4 GHz for steep spectrum sources, while the depolarization is undetermined for most flat/inverted-spectrum sources. Exploiting this complex of information we have estimated the power spectrum of polarization fluctuations due to extragalactic radio sources at microwave frequencies. We confirm that extragalactic sources are expected to be the main contaminant of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization maps on small angular scales. At frequencies $< 30 $GHz the amplitude of their power spectrum is expected to be comparable to that of the $E$-mode of the CMB. In a pilot search for high-redshift radio QSOs, we have obtained spectra of 55 FIRST sources (S(1.4GHz) > 1 mJy) with very red (O-E > 3) starlike optical identifications. 10 of the candidates are QSOs with redshifts 3.6 < z < 4.4 (4 previously known), six with z > 4. The remaining 45 candidates comprise: a z = 2.6 BAL QSO; 3 low-redshift galaxies with narrow emission lines; 18 probable radio galaxies; and 23 M stars (mainly misidentifications). The success rate (high-redshift QSOs / spectroscopically-observed candidates) for this search is 1/2 for S(1.4GHz) > 10 mJy, and 1/9 for S(1.4GHz) > 1 mJy. We report on the investigation of a complete sample of young radio-loud AGN at z<0.25, selected using the new comprehensive radio surveys and the optical APM/POSS-I catalog. This new sample will provide a unique opportunity for statistical studies of the early evolution of radio-loud AGN, free of cosmological evolution effects. In particular, their local luminosity function, linear-size and dynamical age distributions, may strongly constrain possible evolution scenarios. We have formed a complete sample of 26 low redshift (z < 0.3) giant radio galaxies (GRGs) from the WENSS survey, selected at flux densities above 1 Jy at 325 MHz. We present 10.5-GHz observations with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope of 18 sources in this sample. These observations, together with similar data of the remaining eight sources, are combined with data from the WENSS, NVSS and GB6 surveys to study the radio properties of the lobes of these sources at arcminute resolution. We investigate radio source asymmetries, equipartition energy densities in the lobes, the presence of lobe pressure evolution with redshift, the spectral age and the density of the environments of these sources. We find that the armlength asymmetries of GRGs are slightly larger than those of smaller sized 3CR radio galaxies and that these are difficult to explain as arising from orientation effects only. We also find indications that the lobes of the GRGs, despite their large sizes, are still overpressured with respect to their environment. Further, we argue that any evolution of lobe pressure with redshift in these large sources is due to selection effects. A spectral ageing analysis suggests that the GRGs in our sample are the oldest members of the group of relatively high power radio sources whose radio powers have evolved to their currently observed lower values., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Supplement Series

We present new VLA and Effelsberg observations of the radio galaxy 8C0821+695. We have obtained detailed images in total intensity and polarization of this 2 Mpc sized giant. The magnetic field has a configuration predominantly parallel to the source main axis. We observe Faraday rotation at low frequencies, most probably produced by an ionized medium external to the radio source. The spectral index distribution is that typical of FR II radio galaxies, with spectral indices gradually steepening from the source extremes towards the core. Modeling the spectrum in the lobes using standard synchrotron loss models yields the spectral age of the source and the mean velocity of the jet-head with respect to the lobe material. The existence of a possible backflow in the lobe is considered to relate spectral with dynamical determinations of the age and the velocity with respect to the external medium. Through a very simple model, we obtain a physical characterization of the jets and the external medium in which the radio galaxy expands. The results in 8C0821+695 are consistent with a relativistic jet nourishing the lobes which expand in a hot, low density halo. We infer a deceleration of the source expansion velocity which we explain through a progressive increase in the hot-spot size., Comment: 11 pages; 8 figures; accepted in A&A

The CERES Astronomical Archive was created initially in order to make the large amount of data that were collected from the two surveys, the Jodrell-VLA Astrometric Survey (JVAS) and the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS), easily accessible to the partner members of the Consortium for European Research on Extragalactic Surveys (CERES) through the web. Here we describe the web based archive of the 15,000 flat spectrum radio sources. There is a wealth of information that one can access including downloading the raw and processed data for each of the sources. We also describe the search engines that were developed so that a) one can search through the archive for an object or a sample of objects by setting specific criteria and b) select new samples. Since new data are continually gathered on the same sources from follow up programs, an automatic update engine was created so that the new information and data can be added easily in the archive., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, to appear in the proceedings of the 4th Hellenic Astronomical Conference

Giant radio sources form the linear size extreme of the extra-galactic radio source population. Using the WENSS survey, we have selected a complete sample of these sources. We have investigated the properties of their radio structures. We find, among other things, that these sources are old (50-100 Myr) and have higher advance velocities than smaller sources of similar radio power. We find pressure gradients in their radio lobes, suggesting that the lobes are still overpressured with respect to the environment. Further, we find no evidence for a cosmological evolution of the radio lobe pressures with increasing redshift, at least up to $z\sim 0.4$, other than that caused by selection effects. We argue that a much fainter sample of giant sources than currently available is needed to constrain the pressure in their environments, the IGM. Another extremely important discovery is that of a population of radio sources with a so-called `double-double' structure, i.e. that of a small two-sided radio source embedded inside a much larger two-sided structure. We argue that these sources result from an interrupted central jet-forming activity. As such, they are the most convincing examples of radio sources with a history of interrupted activity, yet. Since the inner lobes advance within the outer lobes, high resolution low frequency ($\sim 200$ MHz) polarization studies may reveal the constituents of radio lobes and cocoons. We thus argue for a SKA design that can provide low-frequency images at arcsec resolution, but which is also sensitive to structures as large as a few tens of arcminute on the sky., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, uses nfraconf.sty. We present total flux densities of 1049 radio sources in the frequency range from 151 MHz to 10.6 GHz. These sources belong to the B3-VLA sample, which is complete down to 100 mJy at 408 MHz.
