- Abstract
Background: Severe headaches are common after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Guidelines recommend treatment with acetaminophen and opioids, but patient data show that headaches often persist despite multimodal treatment approaches. Considering an overall slim body of data for a common complaint affecting patients with SAH during their intensive care stay, we set out to assess practice patterns in headache management among clinicians who treat patients with SAH. Methods: We conducted an international cross-sectional study through a 37-question Web-based survey distributed to members of five professional societies relevant to intensive and neurocritical care from November 2021 to January 2022. Responses were characterized through descriptive analyses. Fisher’s exact test was used to test associations. Results: Of 516 respondents, 329 of 497 (66%) were from North America and 121 of 497 (24%) from Europe. Of 435 respondents, 379 (87%) reported headache as a major management concern for patients with SAH. Intensive care teams were primarily responsible for analgesia during hospitalization (249 of 435, 57%), whereas responsibility shifted to neurosurgery at discharge (233 of 501, 47%). Most used medications were acetaminophen (90%), opioids (66%), corticosteroids (28%), and antiseizure medications (28%). Opioids or medication combinations including opioids were most frequently perceived as most effective by 169 of 433 respondents (39%, predominantly intensivists), followed by corticosteroids or combinations with corticosteroids (96 of 433, 22%, predominantly neurologists). Of medications prescribed at discharge, acetaminophen was most common (303 of 381, 80%), followed by opioids (175 of 381, 46%) and antiseizure medications (173 of 381, 45%). Opioids during hospitalization were significantly more prescribed by intensivists, by providers managing higher numbers of patients with SAH, and in Europe. At discharge, opioids were more frequently prescribed in North America. Of 435 re

Palavras-Chave: Gases do efeito estufa. Mudanças climáticas. Mitigação. Compensação financeira CO2 Capture and Payment for Environmental Services: "Olhos d'Água" projects and Atlantic Forest Connection in the North and Northwest of the state of Rio de Janeiro A B S T R A C T The greenhouse effect is one of the most debated issues in recent decades. Among the greenhouse gases (GHGs) the most important are water vapor, hydrocarbons (CFCs), O3, CH4, N2O, with CO2 being the most intensely produced GHG by anthropic actions. In order to regulate climate change caused by CO2 capture and storage methods have been adopted. Ecosystem sequestration of GHGs contributes to the classification of “climate regulation” as one of the ecosystem services in the “Regulatory Services” category. Thus, Forest and Carbon Payments for Environmental Services (PES) initiatives can bring direct benefits to the environment and society. The “Olhos d'Agua” PES - Carapebus/RJ, from the NGO Ecoanzol, aims to recover and conserve 43 ha of springs and Permanent Preservation Areas, for 27 farmers who plant native species from the Atlantic Forest biome. In 2018, in the first planting module, 5,631 seedlings were used in a total area of 3,505 ha. The project Connection Atlantic Forest, an initiative of the Union and the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, aims to recover and preserve ecosystem services associated with biodiversity and carbon capture of the forest, in priority areas of the Southeast corridor of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. In the state of Rio de Janeiro it operates in the hydrographic regions of “Baixo Paraíba do Sul e Itabapoana” and “Médio Paraíba do Sul”, through training, and PSA to the benefited owners. Environmental Education is the integrating element of these approaches. Keywords: Greenhouse gases. Climate changes. Mitigation. Financial Compensation

One of the main challenges in castor crop (Ricinus communis L.) production is efficient weed management mainly due to limited options of selective herbicides. This study evaluated the selectivity of herbicides applied alone or in combination in pre- and postemergence applications in castor crop. Two field experiments were carried out under irrigation conditions in a semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil. It was found that the visual symptoms of phytointoxication of the herbicides used on castor were mild in both experiments. Consequently, there were no significant interferences on plant height, number of racemes, and grain (seed) yield. Pre-emergence applications (g ha−1) of trifluralin (1800), pendimethalin (1500), clomazone (750), clomazone + trifluralin (750 + 1800), and clomazone + pendimethalin (750 + 1500) followed by chlorimuron-ethyl in postemergence (15 g ha−1) are selective to castor. The application (g ha−1) of pendimethalin + clomazone (1000 + 500) in pre-emergence, associated with chlorimuron-ethyl (10 and 15), metamitron (2800 and 4200), ethoxysulfuron (60 and 80), or halosulfuron-methyl (75 and 112.5) in one or two applications in postemergence, as single or split applications, in an interval of 14 days, are selective to castor crop. The campaign #somostodosparalímpicos, created by Vogue Brasil magazine, was the starting point of this analyses of the sociopolitical dynamics of the body and representations of the body with disabilities in common sense and in digital social networks. The methodology was based on an ethnographic inspiration approach for qualitative analysis, aiming to understand the sociopolitical relations of the representation of bodies and the representation of people with disabilities in the messages articulated by the hashtag of the campaign. The articulations between the visibility of the deficiency and the symbiotic relationship between man and machine in social media in the context of the Paralympic Games were analyzed.

Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-29T00:37:17Z (GMT). The experiment was carried out in field conditions in the Brazilian municipality of Guarapuava, Paraná State, during the 2012 and 2013 agricultural years, at Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste- UNICENTRO. Treatments were disposed in randomized complete blocks and experimental design, with five repetitions, consisting of weeds coexistence periods and weeds control at 14, 28, 56, 112 and 168 days after transplanting the seedlings (DATS), using 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 million plants ha-1. Weeds community was evaluated through a phytosociological survey at the end of each coexistence period in relation to yield and commercial quality of bulbs. Bulbs yield of transplanted onion was significantly affected by weeds coexistence, reaching 100% of losses. From adjusted models, viability was not observed in increasing plantation density as a practice that may favor the necessary reduction of weeds control. Onion plants transplanted in August 2012 and July 2013 presented CPIP, respectively, of 23 at 76 and 21 at 120 DATS for commercial bulbs yield, and of 20 at 55 and 26 at 112 DATS for total bulbs yield, respectively. Castor bean crops are agriculturally relevant due to the quality and versatility of their oil, both for the chemical industry and for biodiesel production. Proper weed management is important for both the cultivation and the yield of castor bean crops; therefore, the intention of the present work is to review pertinent information regarding weed management, including the studies regarding weed interference periods, chemical controls for use in different crop production systems an d herbicide selectivity, for castor bean crops. Weed science research for castor bean crops is scarce. One of the main weed management challenges for castor bean crops is the absence of herbicides registered with th e Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MALFS). Research for viable herbicides for weed control in castor bean crops should be directed by research and/or rural extension institutions, associations and farmers cooperatives, as well as by manufactures, for the registration of these selective herbicides, which would be primarily used to control eudicotyledons in castor bean crops. New studies involving the integration of weed control methods in castor bean also may increase the efficiency of weed management, for both small farmers using traditional crop methods in the Brazilian Northeast region, as well as for areas with the potential for large scale production, using conservation tillage systems, such as the no-tillage crop production system.

Executive summary The advancement of regulatory instruments providing for farm animal welfare measures has been marked by various political and regulatory constraints in both domestic and international settings. In an attempt to overcome some of these constraints, a number of innovative governance arrangements have been developed over the two last decades, such as the use of private standards. This thesis offers a critical assessment on how and to what extent the policy field of farm animals welfare has been affected by these innovative developments. The assessment provided in this thesis resulted from four independent (but inter-related) studies. The first study consisted of a theoretical inquiry into the engagement of non-state actors in farm animal welfare policy making in Europe. This study sought to establish the extent to which the changes observed in Europe, specifically in the Netherlands, are consistentwith political modernization theory. This study confirmed that the engagement of non-state actors in farm animal welfare policy-makingin Europe corresponds to themodernization of governance practices, where a new collation of actors, policy discourses and rules come to the fore. The second study consisted of an empirical investigation ofthe rise of farm animal welfare governance in Brazil. The main objective of this study was to gain insight into a development that remains largely unexplored in the current social science literature, that is, into the factors triggering policy change related to animal protection in developing countries. Data collected through 36 semi-structured interviews amongdifferent groups of Brazilian stakeholders suggested that the main factors leading to the rise of animal welfare governance in Brazil were related to Europe and the World OrganisationforAnimal Health (OIE). The insights gained fromthis exploratory empirical study helped produce an analytical framework for assessing how farm animal welfare measures spread across jurisdictions, which is further elaborated in the third phase of this doctoral research. Accordingly, in the third study, an empirical and theoretical examination ofanimal welfare governance in the European Union-Brazildyad is performed with the objective of assessing theactors and mechanisms currently in place to advance farm animal welfare in bilateral and international relations. Several initiatives have been identified as useful in coordinating animal welfare measures between theEU and Brazil. The study nonetheless found that initiatives based on policy diffusion mechanisms were the most prominent. The fourth study entailed a legal analysis ofthe relationship between the regulatory framework of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the advancement of animal welfare measures through private standards. The objective of this study was to determine the possibility thatprivate standards fall within the scope of WTO Member States’ obligations listedin Article 13 of the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement (SPS). For that purpose, three fundamental factorsfor claims of breaches of Article 13 to be pursuedwere examined: (i) the applicability of the SPS Agreement to farm animal welfare measures; (ii) the scope of the term ‘non-governmental entities’; and (iii) the existence of factual evidence that a WTO Member has not taken reasonable measures to ensure that SPS disciplines are observed by non-governmental entities or that a WTO Member has encouraged non-governmental entities or have relied upon the services of non-governmental entities that are not SPScompliant. The conclusion drawn from this examination is that convincing legal arguments and factual evidence exist to pursue WTO disputes over the use of private farm animal welfare standards. Based on all the above findings, the overall assessment of this thesis regarding the evolving path of farm animal welfare governance is four-fold.First, the policy field of farm animal welfare has significantly advanced in and between Europe and Brazil through a variety of non-legislative instruments, such as intergovernmental technical cooperation, capacity building programmes and private standards. Second, the political and regulatory implications of this research regarding the use of private standards in animal welfare indicate that a cautious approach to the use of this policy instrument is required. Third, the policy field of animal welfare has greatly benefited from the entry of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), especially in engaging governments and industries in developing countriesin this area. Finally, a reverse shift (that is, a shift away from private governance and towards public governance) is likely to occur as the path of farm animal welfare policy evolves internationally.

Political scientists generally agree that there has been a change in the political arena of modern societies: a shift from government towards governance, a process often referred to as political modernization. Some evaluate this development as positive, allowing for more direct democracy and more effective policymaking, whereas others are concerned about democratic legitimacy and accountability. This article examines whether the rise of private standards in animal welfare politics does provide a good example of political modernization, and whether it indeed creates a more democratic and more effective mode of policymaking. Using the framework of political modernization, we examine whether the collaboration of retailers and non-government organizations (NGOs) in developing private standards in Europe, and especially in the Netherlands, can be interpreted as a new political arrangement involving a new coalition of actors, a new discourse about animal welfare, and new rules of the game. Our analysis of these private animal welfare standards confirms, and challenges, the assumptions often made about the modernization of politics. Our analysis shows that private standards have indeed replaced the implementation of stricter animal welfare legislation. The collaboration of retailers with NGOs and farmers’ unions may be interpreted, to some extent, in terms of more direct political participation by citizens and stakeholders. However, given the powerful position of retailers in the European food market (a power that transcends massively that of farmers, consumers and citizens), there is also a clear need to analyse carefully the social, economic and legal consequences of this governance shift, which gives private actors regulative authority without them being bound by the democratic rules that serve as a check on whether state regulation serves the common good.

Damping is one of the most sensitive properties of materials and structures, in macro and microscopic scale, which makes it particularly sensitive to the presence of cracks and micro-cracks and a good parameter to the characterization of structural damages. The aim of this work was to develop an algorithm to allow the incorporation of the damping characterization to the natural frequencies of vibration technique (by impulse excitation), already well established for the non-destructive determination of elastic moduli by ASTM E1876 and correlated standards for ceramic materials. It was developed an algorithm for determining the damping based on the time-frequency domain signal analysis, logarithmic decrement method and on the equivalent viscoelastic model. The algorithm was validated using an arbitrary wave form signal generator and applied to characterize two materials, a high alumina refractory castable with and without thermal shock damage, and a SAE-1020 steel. The algorithm was effective to recovery the frequencies and respective damping of the arbitrary simulated signals and to characterize the specimens, limiting the analysis to the vibration mode of interest, thereby minimizing the modes interference. This algorithm allowed the successful integration of the damping characterization to the impulse excitation technique.

Angico-vermelho (Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.)

As a sensitive area in international trade, animal welfare measures have encountered resistance in negotiations at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Consequently, alternative avenues have been pursued to reach international trade policy convergence. To further understand the contemporary trade politics of animal welfare, an empirical investigation was conducted on the interplay between European and Brazilian actors in the context of livestock production. By drawing upon diplomatic studies and the global governance literature, this study identifies and analyses initiatives that parallel the WTO approach and through which the development and implementation of mutually acceptable farm animal welfare measures have been pursued. Research findings indicate that a constellation of international non-diplomatic actors are currently engaged in influencing the future development of farm animal welfare measures. Among the initiatives that enable the alignment of European and Brazilian animal welfare policies and practices, there are soft instruments such as knowledge sharing and private standards. The rise of new actors and the use of soft instruments have been, to a certain extent, able to mitigate the tardiness of a WTO consensus regarding the use of animal welfare measures. However, there are concerns that the use of private standards has become a shortcut to circumvent the rigours of the multilateral trading system. This concern deserves a closer look because instead of paving the way, private standards may hamper trade relations which in turn hamper progress in animal welfare matters.
