[Context and Motivation] Several studies have investigated attributes of great software practitioners. However, the investigation of such attributes is still missing in Requirements Engineering (RE). The current knowledge on attributes of great software practitioners might not be easily translated to the context of RE because its activities are, usually, less technical and more human-centered than other software engineering activities. [Question/Problem] This work aims to investigate which are the attributes of great requirements engineers, the relationship between them, and strategies that can be employed to obtain these attributes. We follow a method composed of a survey with 18 practitioners and follow up interviews with 11 of them. [Principal Ideas/Results] Investigative ability in talking to stakeholders, judicious, and understand the business are the most commonly mentioned attributes amongst the set of 22 attributes identified, which were grouped into four categories. We also found 38 strategies to improve RE skills. Examples are training, talking to all stakeholders, and acquiring domain knowledge. [Contribution] The attributes, their categories, and relationships are organized into a map. The relations between attributes and strategies are represented in a Sankey diagram. Software practitioners can use our findings to improve their understanding about the role and responsibilities of requirements engineers.

Integrated access and backhaul (IAB) technology is a flexible solution for network densification. IAB nodes can also be deployed in moving nodes such as buses and trains, i.e., mobile IAB (mIAB). As mIAB nodes can move around the coverage area, the connection between mIAB nodes and their parent macro base stations (BSs), IAB donor, is sometimes required to change in order to keep an acceptable backhaul link, the so called topology adaptation (TA). The change from one IAB donor to another may strongly impact the system load distribution, possibly causing unsatisfactory backhaul service due to the lack of radio resources. Based on this, TA should consider both backhaul link quality and traffic load. In this work, we propose a load balancing algorithm based on TA for IAB networks, and compare it with an approach in which TA is triggered based on reference signal received power (RSRP) only. The results show that our proposed algorithm improves the passengers worst connections throughput in uplink (UL) and, more modestly, also in downlink (DL), without impairing the pedestrian quality of service (QoS) significantly., Comment: Paper submitted to Journal of Communication and Information Systems (JCIS)

As the number of user equipments increases in fifth generation (5G) and beyond, it is desired to densify the cellular network with auxiliary nodes assisting the base stations. Examples of these nodes are integrated access and backhaul (IAB) nodes, network-controlled repeaters (NCRs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this context, this work presents a system level overview of these three nodes. Moreover, this work evaluates through simulations the impact of network planning aiming at enhancing the performance of a network used to cover an outdoor sport event. We show that, in the considered scenario, in general, IAB nodes provide an improved signal to interference-plus-noise ratio and throughput, compared to NCRs and RISs. However, there are situations where NCR outperforms IAB due to higher level of interference caused by the latter. Finally, we show that the deployment of these nodes in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) also achieves performance gains due to their aerial mobility. The widespread deployment of products powered by machine learning models is raising concerns around data privacy and information security worldwide. To address this issue, Federated Learning was first proposed as a privacy-preserving alternative to conventional methods that allow multiple learning clients to share model knowledge without disclosing private data. A complementary approach known as Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) is a quantum-safe cryptographic system that enables operations to be performed on encrypted weights. However, implementing mechanisms such as these in practice often comes with significant computational overhead and can expose potential security threats. Novel computing paradigms, such as analog, quantum, and specialized digital hardware, present opportunities for implementing privacy-preserving machine learning systems while enhancing security and mitigating performance loss. With security threats increasing in frequency and severity, it is critical that we consider the important role of threat hunters. These highly-trained security professionals learn to see, identify, and intercept security threats. Many recent works and existing tools in cybersecurity are focused on automating the threat hunting process, often overlooking the critical human element. Our study shifts this paradigm by emphasizing a human-centered approach to understanding the lived experiences of threat hunters. By observing threat hunters during hunting sessions and analyzing the rich insights they provide, we seek to advance the understanding of their cognitive processes and the tool support they need. Through an in-depth observational study of threat hunters, we introduce a model of how they build and refine their mental models during threat hunting sessions. We also present 23 themes that provide a foundation to better understand threat hunter needs and five actionable design propositions to enhance the tools that support them. We investigate the gravitational effects on the relativistic Dirac theory of a system such as a Hydrogen atom in the braneworld scenario. A gravitational dipole moment like contribution, arises in the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian of the system through an exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. This term violates the equivalence principle for the weak interaction that is restored in the average over the spins. Furthermore, it feels the effects of the extra dimensions, so that in a Universe with two additional spatial dimensions its energy contribution is amplified by an order of $\sim 10^{16}\ \text{eV}$ concerning to the energy of this term for ordinary space. The compactification radius for a Universe with two extra dimensions is within the experimental limits, where deviations from the inverse square law are being tested. This suggests that the energy value for the gravitational dipole term in this scenario may lead us to search for traces of extra dimensions in atomic spectroscopy, as well as experimental constraints for these dimensions., Comment: 11 pages, one table

The goal of future quantum networks is to enable new internet applications that are impossible to achieve using solely classical communication. Up to now, demonstrations of quantum network applications and functionalities on quantum processors have been performed in ad-hoc software that was specific to the experimental setup, programmed to perform one single task (the application experiment) directly into low-level control devices using expertise in experimental physics. Here, we report on the design and implementation of the first architecture capable of executing quantum network applications on quantum processors in platform-independent high-level software. We demonstrate the architecture's capability to execute applications in high-level software, by implementing it as a quantum network operating system -- QNodeOS -- and executing test programs including a delegated computation from a client to a server on two quantum network nodes based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. We show how our architecture allows us to maximize the use of quantum network hardware, by multitasking different applications on a quantum network for the first time. Our architecture can be used to execute programs on any quantum processor platform corresponding to our system model, which we illustrate by demonstrating an additional driver for QNodeOS for a trapped-ion quantum network node based on a single $^{40}\text{Ca}^+$ atom. The findings discussed in "Apparent Horizons of the Thakurta Spacetime and the Description of Cosmological Black Holes" deviate from prior research, particularly our study in Phys. Rev. D 95, 084031 (2017). We clarify this inconsistency, which arises from employing a coordinate transformation covering a distinct region of spacetime -- specifically one considered inaccessible due to its location beyond a singularity, making it unreachable from infinity. We propose a heuristic model of the universe as a growing quasicrystal projected from a higher-dimensional lattice. By extending the Schr\"{o}dinger equation for a particle in a box with time-dependent boundaries, we derive an equation that resembles the Friedmann equation, addressing the Hubble tension. This model incorporates phonons and phasons, providing insights into cosmic-scale dynamics and the universe's expansion. We outline a pre-inflation tiling space phase with quantum error correction, a radiation phase dominated by quasiparticles, and a post-radiation phase with the emergence of matter. Our hypothesis, which posits that the universe is a growing quasicrystal, suggests that the necessity for an inflationary period may be obviated. Furthermore, phonon arising from this quasicrystalline structure could act as dark matter, influencing the dynamics of ordinary matter while remaining mostly undetectable by electromagnetic interactions. This hypothesis draws parallels with other crystalline matter at atomic scales that are fundamentally quantum in nature. We also explore how the notion of tiling space can support continuous symmetry atop a discrete structure, providing a novel framework for understanding the universe's expansion and underlying structure. Consequently, it is logical to start with quantum mechanics as the foundation of our model. Further development could enhance our understanding of cosmic expansion and the underlying structure of the universe.

To address the need of coverage enhancement in the fifth generation (5G) of wireless cellular telecommunications, while taking into account possible bottlenecks related to deploying fiber based backhaul (e.g., required cost and time), the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) proposed in Release 18 the concept of network-controlled repeaters (NCRs). NCRs enhance previous radio frequency (RF) repeaters by exploring beamforming transmissions controlled by the network through side control information. In this context, this paper introduces the concept of NCR. Furthermore, we present a system level model that allows the performance evaluation of an NCR-assisted network. Finally, we evaluate the network deployment impact on the performance of NCR-assisted networks. As we show, with proper network planning, NCRs can boost the signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the user equipments (UEs) in a poor coverage of a macro base station. What types of differences among causal structures with latent variables are impossible to distinguish by statistical data obtained by probing each visible variable? If the probing scheme is simply passive observation, then it is well-known that many different causal structures can realize the same joint probability distributions. Even for the simplest case of two visible variables, for instance, one cannot distinguish between one variable being a causal parent of the other and the two variables sharing a latent common cause. However, it is possible to distinguish between these two causal structures if we have recourse to more powerful probing schemes, such as the possibility of intervening on one of the variables and observing the other. Herein, we address the question of which causal structures remain indistinguishable even given the most informative types of probing schemes on the visible variables. We find that two causal structures remain indistinguishable if and only if they are both associated with the same mDAG structure (as defined by Evans (2016)). We also consider the question of when one causal structure dominates another in the sense that it can realize all of the joint probability distributions that can be realized by the other using a given probing scheme. Global vegetation structure mapping is critical for understanding the global carbon cycle and maximizing the efficacy of nature-based carbon sequestration initiatives. Moreover, vegetation structure mapping can help reduce the impacts of climate change by, for example, guiding actions to improve water security, increase biodiversity and reduce flood risk. Global satellite measurements provide an important set of observations for monitoring and managing deforestation and degradation of existing forests, natural forest regeneration, reforestation, biodiversity restoration, and the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices. In this paper, we explore the effectiveness of fine-tuning of a geospatial foundation model to estimate above-ground biomass (AGB) using space-borne data collected across different eco-regions in Brazil. The fine-tuned model architecture consisted of a Swin-B transformer as the encoder (i.e., backbone) and a single convolutional layer for the decoder head. All results were compared to a U-Net which was trained as the baseline model Experimental results of this sparse-label prediction task demonstrate that the fine-tuned geospatial foundation model with a frozen encoder has comparable performance to a U-Net trained from scratch. This is despite the fine-tuned model having 13 times less parameters requiring optimization, which saves both time and compute resources. Further, we explore the transfer-learning capabilities of the geospatial foundation models by fine-tuning on satellite imagery with sparse labels from different eco-regions in Brazil.

Telepresence VR systems allow for face-to-face communication, promoting the feeling of presence and understanding of nonverbal cues. However, when discussing virtual 3D objects, limitations to presence and communication cause deictic gestures to lose meaning due to disparities in orientation. Current approaches use shared perspective, and avatar overlap to restore these references, which cause occlusions and discomfort that worsen when multiple users participate. We introduce a new approach to shared perspective in multi-user collaboration where the avatars are not co-located. Each person sees the others' avatars at their positions around the workspace while having a first-person view of the workspace. Whenever a user manipulates an object, others will see his/her arms stretching to reach that object in their perspective. SPARC combines a shared orientation and supports nonverbal communication, minimizing occlusions. We conducted a user study (n=18) to understand how the novel approach impacts task performance and workspace awareness. We present an exact $n$-qubit computational-basis amplitude encoder of real- or complex-valued data vectors of $d=\binom{n}{k}$ components into a subspace of fixed Hamming weight $k$. This represents a polynomial space compression. The circuit is optimal in that it expresses an arbitrary data vector using only $d-1$ (controlled) Reconfigurable Beam Splitter (RBS) gates and is constructed by an efficient classical algorithm that sequentially generates all bitstrings of weight $k$ and identifies all gate parameters. An explicit compilation into CNOTs and single-qubit gates is presented, with the total CNOT-gate count of $\mathcal{O}(k\, d)$ provided in analytical form. In addition, we show how to load data in the binary basis by sequentially stacking encoders of different Hamming weights using $\mathcal{O}(d\,\log(d))$ CNOT gates. Moreover, using generalized RBS gates that mix states of different Hamming weights, we extend the construction to efficiently encode arbitrary sparse vectors. Finally, we perform an experimental proof-of-principle demonstration of our scheme on a commercial trapped-ion quantum computer. We successfully upload a $q$-Gaussian probability distribution in the non-log-concave regime with $n = 6$ and $k = 2$. We also showcase how the effect of hardware noise can be alleviated by quantum error mitigation. We explore in detail the 2+2 and 1+1+2 formalism in spherically symmetric spacetimes, spanning from deducing the dynamical equations to relating them to the well-known generalised Painlev\'e-Gullstrand (GPG) coordinate system. The evolution equations are the Raychaudhuri equations for null rays, including those also known as cross-focusing equations whose derivation, to the best of our knowledge, we present for the first time. We physically interpret the scalars that arise in this scenario, namely the flow 2-expansion $\Theta_{n}$, the flow acceleration $\mathcal{A}$, and the radial extrinsic curvature $\mathcal{B}$. We derive a coordinate independent formula for the redshift which shows that $\mathcal{B}$ is the sole source for the redshift in spherically symmetric spacetimes. We also establish the correspondence between the 1+1+2 scalars and the 1+3 splitting scalars, expansion and shear. We further make a comparison with the Newman-Penrose formalism, in order to clarify the context where each formalism is more useful, and finally, we extend our results to planar and hyperbolic symmetric warped spacetimes as well, in particular, the relationship between $\mathcal{B}$ and the redshift., Comment: 27pp

Mixed methods research is often used in software engineering, but researchers outside of the social or human sciences often lack experience when using these designs. This paper provides guidelines and advice on how to design mixed method research, and to encourage the intentional, rigorous, and innovative use of mixed methods in software engineering. It also presents key characteristics of core mixed method research designs. Through a number of fictitious but recognizable software engineering research scenarios, we showcase how to choose suitable designs and consider the inevitable trade-offs any design choice leads to. In fifth generation (5G) wireless cellular networks, millimeter wave spectrum opens room for several potential improvements in throughput, reliability, latency, among other aspects. However, it also brings challenges, such as a higher influence of blockage which may significantly limit the coverage. In this context, network-controlled repeaters (NCRs) are network nodes with low complexity that represent a technique to overcome coverage problems. In this paper, we introduce the NCR concept and study its performance gains and deployment options. Particularly, presenting the main specifications of NCR as agreed in 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) Rel-18, we analyze different NCR deployments in an urban scenario and compare its performance with alternative deployments.
