PD may lead to tooth loss, and treatment options are limited. In this study, we designed, synthesized, and characterized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) conjugated with chlorhexidine (AgNPs-CHL) or metronidazole (AgNPs-PEG-MET) to determine whether they can be used to treat PDs.Materials and Methods: AgNPs were synthesized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis spectrometry, thermogravimetric analyses, and dynamic light scattering. We determined the safety and the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of synthesized AgNPs in an in vitro model of periodontitis. Antimicrobial properties were determined by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) on reference strains of bacteria and fungi. Human gingival fibroblast (HGF-1), murine macrophage (RAW264.7) and human foetal osteoblast (hFOB1.19) cells were used in the study. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to induce inflammation. Cytokine levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; metalloproteinase expression was measured using Western blotting.Results: The synthesized AgNPs were spherical and narrow-dispersed with an average diameter of 13.4 nm ±  3.0 nm in the case of AgNPs-CHL and 3.72 nm ±  0.72 nm in the case of AgNPs-PEG-MET. Both types of AgNPs were active against bacteria and fungi. AgNPs-CHL proved to be a more potent antimicrobial agent, although they were more cytotoxic than AgNPs-PEG-MET; however, both demonstrated beneficial properties in nontoxic concentrations. AgNPs-CHL and AgNPs-PEG-MET decreased the production of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNFα. Both agents also decreased the levels of metalloproteinases MMP3 and MMP8, which may indicate that they will inhibit tissue degradation.Conclusion: AgNPs-CHL and AgNPs-PEG-MET may be possible therapeutic options for PD, as they have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Abstract Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a vaginal infection that manifests itself as several symptoms which can lead to various life-threatening complications. The majority of VVC is caused by Candida albicans strains, and it is estimated that approximately 75% of women worldwide would suffer from this condition at least once during their lifetime. Surprisingly, the detailed pathomechanism of yeast-like fungi invasions in vagina is not yet fully understood. However, the ability to form biofilm on vaginal mucosa is considered as one of the critical factors associated with failure of the therapy and recurrences of the disease. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a promising class of compounds that are receiving a growing interest owing to their antibacterial, antifungal, and antibiofilm properties. Omiganan is a synthetic analog of Indolicidin that is characterized by wide spectrum of antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities. Recent reports suggest improved activity of analogs with a reversed sequence (retro-analog concept). Therefore, Omiganan and its retro analog were tested against planktonic forms and biofilm of 18 Candida strains isolated from VVC. Moreover, the synergy between the AMPs and fluconazole was studied as well. The AMPs appeared to be effective against C. albicans biofilm, and the reversion of the sequence generally led to an improved antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, confocal and scanning electron microscopic visualizations revealed the effectiveness of AMPs-fluconazole combinations also against fluconazole-resistant strains. Graphical Abstract

Introduction Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) are a diverse group of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas with malignant T lymphocytes infiltrating the skin. Mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sezary syndrome (SS) belong to the group of CTCLs, among others. In previous studies it was suggested that primary cancers more often occur in patients with cutaneous lymphoma. Aim To analyse the incidence of other malignancies in CTCL patients. Material and methods The evaluation of the coexistence of primary malignant neoplasms in CTCL patients was conducted by analysis of the patients' database, with diagnosis of mycosis fungoides and Sezary syndrome, treated in the Dermatological Department of the Medical University of Gdansk between 2010 and 2018. Results Among CTCL patients, 177 were diagnosed with MF/SS (stage MFIA 37.61%, MFIB 30.77%, MFIIA 0.85%, MFIIB 11.11%, MFIII 8.55% MFIV 4.27%; SS 6.84%). The group was characterized by a male-to-female ratio of 1.21 : 1. 16.94% of MF/SS patients had one co-existing cancer, while 1.13% of patients had 2 co-existing cancers; the most common were basal cell carcinoma, lymphomatoid papulosis, lung cancer, and B-cell lymphoma. The obtained data highlight that MF/SS is associated with increased risk of cancer. Conclusions Our study suggests that special attention should be paid to careful examination of CTCL patients - what force to perform solid clinical examination, the X-ray chest examination, abdomen USG, mammography, and others, even in early stages of MF/SS. Clinicians should be aware of the coexistence of other neoplasms such as lung, skin, and breast cancer.

This paper presents synthesis of vancomycin derivatives modified with selected 1- and 2-aminoalditols to carboxylic function and 2,5-anhydro-D-mannose and D-talose to amino function of vancosamine via reductive alkylation. MIC and MBC of these derivatives were determined for reference strains of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, ATCC 6538, ATCC 6538/P, S. epidemidis ATCC 14490, E. faecium PCM 1859, E. faecalis PCM 2673, S. pyogenes PCM 465, and S. pneumonia ATCC 49619 and compared with the activity of vancomycin and its aglycone. Our findings confirm that sugar fragments can play an important role in the mechanism of interaction of vancomycin with bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan.

Ultrashort cationic lipopeptides (USCLs) and gemini cationic surfactants are classes of potent antimicrobials. Our recent study has shown that the branching and shortening of the fatty acids chains with the simultaneous addition of a hydrophobic N-terminal amino acid in USCLs result in compounds with enhanced selectivity. Here, this approach was introduced into arginine-rich gemini cationic surfactants. L-cystine diamide and L-lysine amide linkers were used as spacers. Antimicrobial activity against planktonic and biofilm cultures of ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp.) strains and Candida sp. as well as hemolytic and cytotoxic activities were examined. Moreover, antimicrobial activity in the presence of human serum and the ability to form micelles were evaluated. Membrane permeabilization study, serum stability assay, and molecular dynamics were performed. Generally, critical aggregation concentration was linearly correlated with hydrophobicity. Gemini surfactants were more active than the parent USCLs, and they turned out to be selective antimicrobial agents with relatively low hemolytic and cytotoxic activities. Geminis with the L-cystine diamide spacer seem to be less cytotoxic than their L-lysine amide counterparts, but they exhibited lower antibiofilm and antimicrobial activities in serum. In some cases, geminis with branched fatty acid chains and N-terminal hydrophobic amino acid resides exhibited enhanced selectivity to pathogens over human cells.

Peptides and proteins constitute a large group of molecules that play multiple functions in living organisms. In conjunction with their important role in biological processes and advances in chemical approaches of synthesis, the interest in peptide-based drugs is still growing. As the side chains of amino acids can be basic, acidic, or neutral, the peptide drugs often occur in the form of salts with different counter-ions. This review focuses on the role of counter-ions in peptides. To date, over 60 peptide-based drugs have been approved by the FDA. Based on their area of application, biological activity, and results of preliminary tests they are characterized by different counter-ions. Moreover, the impact of counter-ions on structure, physicochemical properties, and drug formulation is analyzed. Additionally, the application of salts as mobile phase additives in chromatographic analyses and analytical techniques is highlighted.

Ultrashort cationic lipopeptides (USCLs) are considered to be a promising class of antimicrobials with high activity against a broad-spectrum of microorganisms. However, the majority of these compounds are characterized by significant toxicity toward human cells, which hinders their potential application. To overcome those limitations, several approaches have been advanced. One of these is disulfide cyclization that has been shown to improve drug-like characteristics of peptides. In this article the effect of disulfide cyclization of the polar head of N-palmitoylated USCLs on in vitro biological activity has been studied. Lipopeptides used in this study consisted of three or four basic amino acids (lysine and arginine) and cystine in a cyclic peptide. In general, disulfide cyclization of the lipopeptides resulted in peptides with reduced cytotoxicity. Disulfide-cyclized USCLs exhibited improved selectivity between Candida sp., Gram-positive strains and normal cells in contrast to their linear counterparts. Interactions between selected USCLs and membranes were studied by molecular dynamics simulations using a coarse-grained force field. Moreover, membrane permeabilization properties and kinetics were examined. Fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy revealed damage to Candida cell membrane and organelles. Concluding, USCLs are strong membrane disruptors and disulfide cyclization of polar head can have a beneficial effect on its in vitro selectivity between Candida sp. and normal human cells.

An increasing number of multidrug-resistant pathogens is a serious problem of modern medicine and new antibiotics are highly demanded. In this study, different n-alkyl acids (C2-C14) and aromatic acids (benzoic and trans-cinnamic) were conjugated to the N-terminus of KR12 amide. The effect of this modification on antimicrobial activity (ESKAPE bacteria and biofilm of Staphylococcus aureus) and cytotoxicity (human red blood cells and HaCaT cell line) was examined. The effect of lipophilic modifications on helicity was studied by CD spectroscopy, whereas peptide self-assembly was studied by surface tension measurements and NMR spectroscopy. As shown, conjugation of the KR12-NH2 peptide with C4-C14 fatty acid chains enhanced the antimicrobial activity with an optimum demonstrated by C8-KR12-NH2 (MIC 1&ndash, 4 &mu, g/mL against ESKAPE strains, MBEC of S. aureus 4&ndash, 16 &mu, g/mL). Correlation between antimicrobial activity and self-assembly behavior of C14-KR12-NH2 and C8-KR12-NH2 has shown that the former self-assembled into larger aggregated structures, which reduced its antimicrobial activity. In conclusion, N-terminal modification can enhance antimicrobial activity of KR12-NH2, however, at the same time, the cytotoxicity increases. It seems that the selectivity against pathogens over human cells can be achieved through conjugation of peptide N-terminus with appropriate n-alkyl fatty and aromatic acids.

Ultrashort cationic lipopeptides (USCLs) are promising antimicrobial agents that hypothetically may be alternatively used to combat pathogens such as bacteria and fungi. In general, USCLs consist of fatty acid chains and a few basic amino acid residues. The main shortcoming of USCLs is their relatively high cytotoxicity and hemolytic activity. This study focuses on the impact of the hydrophobic fatty acid chain, on both antimicrobial and hemolytic activities. To learn more about this region, a series of USCLs with different straight-chain fatty acids (C8, C10, C12, C14) attached to the tripeptide with two arginine residues were synthesized. The amino acid at the N-terminal position was exchanged for proteinogenic and non-proteinogenic amino acid residues (24 in total). Moreover, the branched fatty acid residues were conjugated to N-terminus of a dipeptide with two arginine residues. All USCLs had C-terminal amides. USCLs were tested against reference bacterial strains (including ESKAPE group) and Candida albicans. The hemolytic potential was tested on human erythrocytes. Hydrophobicity of the compounds was evaluated by RP-HPLC. Shortening of the fatty acid chain and simultaneous addition of amino acid residue at N-terminus were expected to result in more selective and active compounds than those of the reference lipopeptides with similar lipophilicity. Hypothetically, this approach would also be beneficial to other antimicrobial peptides where N-lipidation strategy was used to improve their biological characteristics.

Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most challenging pathogens, on account of its predisposition to develop resistance leading to severe, difficult-to-treat infections. As these bacteria are more usually isolated from nosocomial infections, the new therapeutic options are demanded. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are compounds likely to find application in the treatment of A. baumannii. These compounds exhibit a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity and were found to be effective against biofilm. In this study, eight AMPs, namely aurein 1.2, CAMEL, citropin 1.1., LL-37, omiganan, r-omiganan, pexiganan, and temporin A, were tested for their antimicrobial activity. A reference strain of A. baumannii ATCC 19606 was used. Antimicrobial assays included determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum biofilm eradication concentration. Considering the fact that the majority of A. baumannii infections are associated with mechanical ventilation and the use of indwelling devices, the activity against biofilm was assessed on both a polystyrene surface and tracheal tube fragments. In addition, cytotoxicity (HaCaT) was determined and in vitro selectivity index was calculated.

Introduction Staphylococcus aureus causes a diverse array of diseases, ranging from relatively harmless localized skin infections to life-threatening systemic conditions. It secretes toxins directly associated with particular disease symptoms. Aim To determine the prevalence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) colonization among patients with atopic dermatitis and to assess the antimicrobial susceptibility to conventional antibiotics and selected antimicrobial peptides among toxin-producing strains and nonproducing strains. Material and methods One hundred patients with atopic dermatitis and 50 healthy people were microbiologically assessed for the carriage of S. aureus. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed using the broth microdilution method for conventional antibiotics and antimicrobial peptides (CAMEL, Citropin 1.1, LL-37, Temporin A). Detection of genes lukS/lukF-PV, tst, sea-sed, eta and etb by multiplex PCR was performed. Results Staphylococcus aureus strains were isolated from the majority of patients, from either the skin (75%) or the anterior nares (73%). Among the conventional antibiotics tested, the highest rates of resistance were observed for ampicillin, daptomycin, lincomycin and erythromycin. Antimicrobial peptides did not show significant diversity in activity. Among MSSA strains greater differentiation of secreted toxins was observed (sec, eta, pvl, tsst, etb, seb), while in the group of MRSA strains secretion of 3 toxins (pvl, eta, seb) was noted. Conclusions Antimicrobial resistance continues to evolve. It is important to monitor S. aureus infections. The profile of toxins produced by S. aureus strains is an important consideration in the selection of an antimicrobial agent to treat infections.

In view of an appreciable increase in resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to the conventional antibiotics, it is desired to develop new effective drugs. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) seem to be attractive candidates. In general, AMPs samples used for in vitro studies consist of a peptide, counter-ion, and water. The presence of the counter-ion could be significant as it affects peptide secondary structure and biological activity. The purpose of this study was to estimate the impact of counter-ion on antistaphylococcal activity of selected AMPs (CAMEL, citropin 1.1, LL-37, pexiganan, temporin A). To do this, three kinds of salts were prepared, namely, acetates, hydrochlorides, and trifluoroacetates. In addition, the hemolytic activity against human red blood cells (hRBCs) and cytotoxicity (HaCaT) were determined. The results indicate that there is a substantial difference between different salts, but the pattern is not consistent for the peptides. In general, the antistaphylococcal activity decreased in the order: CAMEL > temporin A > pexiganan > citropin 1.1 ≫ LL-37. The highest selectivity indexes were determined for CAMEL hydrochloride, pexiganan acetate, and temporin A trifluoroacetate. This study shows how important is to take into account the kind of counter-ions when designing novel peptide-based antimicrobials.

Introduction : Daptomycin is a cyclic lipopeptide that is bactericidal against Staphylococcus aureus , including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA) and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) strains. Daptomycin exerts its antimicrobial effect by a calcium-dependent interaction with the cytoplasmic membrane resulting in depolarization, ion loss and rapid cell death. Unfortunately, loss of daptomycin susceptibility in S. aureus in the clinical setting has been noted. Aim : To evaluate the susceptibility profile to daptomycin among S. aureus strains isloted from patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). Another point was to correlate the results obtained by broth microdilution method and Etest, which is commonly applied in clinical setting. Material and methods : One hundred patients with the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis were microbiologically assessed for the carriage of S. aureus . Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed using broth-microdilution (BMD) and Etests for daptomycin. Results : Staphylococcus aureus strains were isolated from the majority of our patients, either from the skin (73%) or the anterior nares (75%). Six of the 100 nasal swabs (6%) and 5 of the 100 skin swabs (5%) were positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A total of 81 of 148 (54.7%) daptomycin non-susceptible isolates of S. aureus were identified by BMD. Only 19 of 81 were also classified as non-susceptible by Etest. Conclusions : Clinicians and microbiologists should be aware of the possibility of the emergence of daptomycin non-susceptibility (or increase in minimal inhibitory concentration) during prolonged therapy and closely monitor the susceptibility of persisting isolates that might be recovered during therapy.

The synthesis of diosgenyl 2-amino-2-deoxy-β-D-galactopyranoside is presented for the first time. This synthetic saponin was transformed into its hydrochloride as well as N-acyl, 2-ureido, N-alkyl, and N,N-dialkyl derivatives. Antifungal and antibacterial studies show that some of the obtained compounds are active against Gram-positive bacteria and Candida type fungi.

Increasing drug resistance of common pathogens urgently needs discovery of new effective molecules. Antimicrobial peptides are believed to be one of the possible solutions of this problem. One of the approaches for improvement of biological properties is reversion of the sequence (retro analog concept). This research is based on investigation of antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi, hemolysis of erythrocytes, interpretation of the circular dichroism spectra, measurement of counter-ion content, and assessment of the peptide hydrophobicity and self-assembly using reversed-phase chromatography. The experiments were conducted using the following peptides: aurein 1.2, CAMEL, citropin 1.1, omiganan, pexiganan, temporin A, and their retro analogs. Among the compounds studied, only retro omiganan showed an enhanced antimicrobial and a slightly increased hemolytic activity as compared to parent molecule. Moreover, retro pexiganan exhibited high activity towards Klebsiella pneumoniae, whereas pexiganan was in general more or equally active against the rest of tested microorganisms. Furthermore, the determined activity was closely related to the peptide hydrophobicity. In general, the reduced hemolytic activity correlates with lower antimicrobial activity. The tendency to self-association and helicity fraction in SDS seems to be correlated. The normalized RP-HPLC—temperature profiles of citropin 1.1 and aurein 1.2, revealed an enhanced tendency to self-association than that of their retro analogs.

In this work, protective copper-based coatings were deposited on stainless steel substrates by plasma spraying. The coatings were produced from copper alloys and copper composite with addition of titanium dioxide. They are intended for use on sensitive surfaces of furniture and accessories in medical facilities, i.e. operating tables, tables for medical products and surgical instruments. The phase composition and microstructure homogeneity of the produced coatings were examined. The effect of chemical composition and surface development on the biological activity of the obtained coatings was also investigated.

This is the study on the effect of opiorphin, sialorphin and their analogs on antitumor activity. We demonstrated that conjugation of opiorphin and sialorphin with a proapoptotic, antimicrobial peptide klak (klaklakklaklak) led to compounds (opio-klak and sialo-klak) that were cytotoxic against cancer cells (LN18, PC3, A549, HCT116 and B10-F16) in the MTT test. The conjugated analogs were designed to increase the effectiveness of the peptide. The opio-klak derivative was the most effective in the in vitro assays and led to a decrease in viability of cancer cells over time as compared with that of untreated controls. In contrast, treatment with either the untargeted klak peptide or opiorphin as a negative control led to a negligible loss in viability. Antitumor effect of the opio-klak was also observed in vivo in murine melanoma tumor-bearing mice. Cessation of peptide administration resulted in tumor regrowth. Our results are seemingly valuable for the development of opiorphin analogs with potential clinical applications. Copyright © 2016 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Staphylococcus aureus is considered one of the leading pathogens responsible for community and healthcare-associated infections. Among them, infections caused by methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA) are connected with ineffective or prolonged treatment. The therapy of staphylococcal infections faces many difficulties, not only because of the bacteria’s resistance to antibiotics and the multiplicity of virulence factors it produces, but also due to its ability to form a biofilm. The present review focuses on several approaches used for the assessment of staphylococcal biofilm eradication. The methods described here are successfully applied in research on the prevention of biofilm-associated infections, as well as in their management. They include not only the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of novel compounds, but also the methods for biomaterial functionalization. Moreover, the advantages and limitations of different dyes and techniques used for biofilm characterization are discussed. Therefore, this review may be helpful for those scientists who work on the development of new antistaphylococcal compounds.

Betulin is a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid, possessing a lupane-structure, with a wide range of pharmacological activities. Its weak hydrosolubility hinders the biological activity of the compound and its derivatives. To circumvent this problem, we synthesized and tested in vitro three d-glycosaminosides of betulin. The structure of betulin was modified by incorporation of 2-amino-2-deoxy-d-gluco- and -d-galactopyranosyl moieties to its C-3 position. So far betulinyl glycosides containing these amino-sugars have not been reported in the literature. The structure of the studied derivatives was confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry. The 28-O-acetylbetulin-3-yl 2-amino-2-deoxy-β-d-glucopyranoside and betulin-3-yl 2-amino-2-deoxy-β-d-gluco- and β-d-galactopyranoside were tested against the human pathogenic fungi and Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Moreover, the MTT assay of their cytotoxicity was performed on the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line and on the HDFa, human dermal fibroblasts. The Ames test on mutagenic properties completed our biological assays.

In view of the increasing interest in peptides in various market sectors, a stronger emphasis on topics related to their production has been seen. Fmoc-based solid phase peptide synthesis, although being fast and efficient, provides final products with significant amounts of trifluoroacetate ions in the form of either a counter-ion or an unbound impurity. Because of the proven toxicity towards cells and peptide activity inhibition, ion exchange to more biocompatible one is purposeful. Additionally, as most of the currently used counter-ion exchange techniques are time-consuming and burdened by peptide yield reduction risk, development of a new approach is still a sensible solution. In this study, we examined the potential of peptide counter-ion exchange using non-aqueous organic solvents saturated with HCl. Counter-ion exchange of a model peptide, citropin 1.1 (GLFDVIKKVASVIGGL-NH2), for each solvent was conducted through incubation with subsequent evaporation under reduced pressure, dissolution in water and lyophilization. Each exchange was performed four times and compared to a reference method—lyophilization of the peptide from an 0.1 M HCl solution. The results showed superior counter-ion exchange efficiency for most of the organic solutions in relation to the reference method. Moreover, HCl-saturated acetonitrile and tert-butanol provided a satisfying exchange level after just one repetition. Thus, those two organic solvents can be potentially introduced into routine peptide counter-ion exchange.

This is the study on the effect of opiorphin, sialorphin and their analogs on antitumor activity. We demonstrated that conjugation of opiorphin and sialorphin with a proapoptotic, antimicrobial peptide klak (klaklakklaklak) led to compounds (opio-klak and sialo-klak) that were cytotoxic against cancer cells (LN18, PC3, A549, HCT116 and B10-F16) in the MTT test. The conjugated analogs were designed to increase the effectiveness of the peptide. The opio-klak derivative was the most effective in the in vitro assays and led to a decrease in viability of cancer cells over time as compared with that of untreated controls. In contrast, treatment with either the untargeted klak peptide or opiorphin as a negative control led to a negligible loss in viability. Antitumor effect of the opio-klak was also observed in vivo in murine melanoma tumor-bearing mice. Cessation of peptide administration resulted in tumor regrowth. Introduction Exacerbation of atopic dermatitis can be associated with bacterial infection. The skin of patients is colonized with Staphylococcus aureus in 90% of cases. An attempt has been made to demonstrate that eradication significantly reduces the severity of the disease. Studies indicate the efficacy of topical antibiotics, topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors. Due to increasing resistance to drugs and the defective antimicrobial peptide profile, decolonization is virtually impossible. Aim To determine the prevalence of S. aureus colonization among patients with atopic dermatitis and to assess antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated strains to antibiotics, especially fusidic acid and mupirocin. Material and methods One hundred patients with atopic dermatitis and 50 healthy subjects were microbiologically assessed for the carriage of S. aureus. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed using the broth-microdilution method for antibiotics: ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, daptomycin, erythromycin, fusidic acid, linezolid, lincomycin, mupirocin, tetracycline and vancomycin. Results Staphylococcus aureus strains were isolated from the majority of our patients, either from the skin (71%) or the anterior nares (67%). In the present study, 10% of isolations represented methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Antibiotics exhibited diverse activities against clinical isolates of S. aureus. Among those tested, the highest rates of resistance were shown for ampicillin – 58.5%, lincomycin – 37.5% and erythromycin – 31.0%. Enhanced resistance levels were expressed to mupirocin (17.5%) and fusidic acid (15.5%). Conclusions According to the increasing rate of resistance and quick recolonization after discontinuation of the treatment, chronic use of topical antibiotics is not recommended and should be limited to exacerbation of atopic dermatitis with clinical signs of bacterial infection.
