Long-term field experiments (LTEs) play an important role in studying the effects of different management strategies on the soil ecosystem. However, LTEs are very diverse regarding location, duration, experimental design or research question. Therefore, in October 2020, experts on LTEs from five different European countries met in a virtual workshop to discuss how to ensure high quality in LTE research. Recommendations for the implementation and use of LTEs were drawn from the presentations and discussions based on the following topics: (1) design and statistical evaluation, (2) soil and plant parameters, (3) requirements for data archiving and modelling as well as (4) data management and repository. Furthermore, it was concluded, that international networks enable joint analyses of LTEs to gain a better understanding of long-term changes in crop production at different climate conditions. This knowledge can help to develop sustainable agricultural management strategies. Consequently, a close collaboration among different groups like BonaRes, GLTEN and IOSDV can strengthen the validity of LTE research.

Wie kann die aktive und regelmäßige Beteiligung der Studierenden in einer Vorlesung ermöglicht werden? Ein Ansatz ist die Verbindung von Theorie und Praxis, die jedoch insbesondere im traditionellen Format der Vorlesung eine Herausforderung für Lehrende darstellt. E-Learning bietet hier unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten, um die Verknüpfung der beiden Bildungsräume Berufspraxis und Vorlesung zu realisieren. Um diese passgenau für die Disziplin und das Vorlesungsformat auszuwählen und einzusetzen, benötigen Lehrende professionelle Unterstützung. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird am Beispiel einer Lehrveranstaltung im Fachgebiet Pflanzenbau aufgezeigt, wie ein E-Learning-Vorhaben durch Beratung und Coaching bei der Planung, Umsetzung und Auswertung von Hochschulseite begleitet werden kann. Der Beitrag fokussiert daher zwei Ebenen des E-Learning-Einsatzes: Zum einen die Unterstützung der E-Learning-Implementierung durch ein Lehrcoaching, zum anderen das Zusammenführen verschiedener Lernorte durch digitale Medien in einer Vorlesung. Besonderer Fokus liegt in der Analyse dieser beiden Ebenen auf Entwicklungen, die in Bezug auf die Artefakte, die Lernergebnisse der Studierenden und durch Reflexionen im Coachingprozess stattfanden. Most of the available research studies have focused on the production of high grain yields of wheat and have neglected yield stability. However, yield stability is a relevant factor in agronomic practice and, therefore, is the focus of this comprehensive survey. The aim was to first describe the importance of yield stability as well as currently used practical management strategies that ensure yield stability in wheat production and secondly, to obtain potential research areas supporting yield stability in the complex system of agronomy. The target groups were German farmers with experience in wheat production and advisors with expertise in the field of wheat cultivation or research. A sample size of 615 completed questionnaires formed the data basis of this study. The study itself provides evidence that the yield stability of winter wheat is even more important than the amount of yield for a large proportion of farmers (48%) and advisors (47%). Furthermore, in the view of the majority of the surveyed farmers and advisors, yield stability is gaining importance in climate change. Data analysis showed that site adapted cultivar choice, favorable crop rotations and integrated plant protection are ranked as three of the most important agronomic management practices to achieve high yield stability of wheat. Soil tillage and fertilization occupied a middle position, whereas sowing date and sowing density were estimated with lower importance. However, yield stability is affected by many environmental, genetic and agronomic factors, which subsequently makes it a complex matter. Hence, yield stability in farming practice must be analyzed and improved in a systems approach.

The objective of this study is to understand which requirements for cereal cultivars with regard to climate change adaptation are in demand by farmers and advisors, and to clarify whether there are any differences in their assessments. A comparative survey was used to collect data from 410 farmers and 114 advisors in Germany. The majority of both farmers and advisors reported perceivable effects of climatic change on plant production. The increase in droughts and hot spells, the increased incidence of torrential rain, and mild winters were mentioned as the main effects of climate change. For climate change adaptation, the farmers and advisors mostly relied on a locally-adapted cultivar selection. It is estimated that eco-stability, grain yield, resistance to lodging and drought tolerance are important cultivar properties. In the study, farmers and advisors equally pointed out the need for additional cultivar evaluation according to eco-stability. Finally, only minor differences regarding farmers and advisors assessments were found within the study. The outcome of this research points to the need of implementing farmers demands in cultivar recommendations. For example, an impartial assessment of cultivars eco-stability could help support the choice of cultivars and reduce the growing risks in cereal production with regard to climate change.

Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, die Ökostabilität und Leistungsfähigkeit von verschiedenen Winterroggen- und Winterweizensorten unter differenzierten Umweltbedingungen in der Region Brandenburg zu analysieren. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden methodische Verfahren aufgezeigt und diskutiert, welche die Sortenauswahl und -empfehlung anhand eines optimierten Bewertungsschemas unterstützen können. Des Weiteren wurden spezielle Aspekte zu klimatischen Veränderungen und zur Sortenwahl auf landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben in der Region Nordostdeutschland erfasst. Auf Basis von mehrortigen und -jährigen Ergebnissen aus Sortenversuchen in Brandenburg und unter Nutzung biostatistischer Parameter wurden verschiedene Roggen- und Weizensorten analysiert. Die Bewertung zur Ertragsfähigkeit und -stabilität umfasste neben der deskriptiven Statistik und Varianzanalyse folgende Parameter: Ökovalenz, Ökoregression und Floating Checks. Zusätzlich erfolgte die Prüfung der Sortenreaktion auf verschiedene Witterungsbedingungen anhand der klimatischen Wasserbilanz. Die Ergebnisse der Sortenversuche zeigten, dass sich die Hybridsorten von Winterroggen im Vergleich der Sortentypen als deutlich ertragsfähiger und tendenziell ertragsstabiler erwiesen, vor allem auch unter trockenen Witterungsbedingungen. Beim Winterweizen erreichten die A-Sorten tendenziell stabilere Erträge, wobei die Unterschiede zwischen den Sorten innerhalb der jeweiligen Qualitätsgruppen gering ausfielen. In Ergänzung zur Auswertung der experimentellen Daten aus den Sortenversuchen wurde eine begleitende empirische Studie zur Sortenwahl in Nordostdeutschland in Form von Experteninterviews und einer Praxisumfrage bei landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben durchgeführt. Dabei wurde auch auf Zusammenhänge zwischen Sortenwahl und Witterungseffekten im Zeichen des Klimawandels eingegangen. The object of this study was to analyse the eco-stability and capacity of different winter rye and winter wheat varieties under differentiated environmental conditions in the Brandenburg region. This paper shows and discusses a methodical procedure to support the selection and recommendation of varieties with an optimised assessment pattern. Then the paper covers special aspects on climatic changes and the selection of varieties on agricultural operations in the north-eastern region of Germany. Based on results from variety trials at multiple environments in Brandenburg and using bio statistical parameters, different varieties of rye and wheat were analysed. The evaluation of yield capacity and stability includes following parameters: eco-valence, eco-regression and floating checks. Then different impact factors on variability of yield were estimated, and the reaction of varieties to different weather conditions was analysed according to the climatic water balance. The results of the different tests showed that the yield performance is determined by different environmental factors and by variety. Of winter rye the hybrid varieties compared to other variety types were considerably more capable of yield and in tendency more stable in yield, especially also under dry weather conditions. Of winter wheat the A-varieties in tendency realized more stable yields while there was little difference between the varieties of the different quality groups. The experimental data base was supplemented by an empiric study on the selection of varieties in the German region of Brandenburg which includes interviews with experts as well as a polling of the standard practice in agricultural operations. Under the empiric study the interviewed farmers said when selecting varieties they would pay particular attention to yield safety, dryness tolerance and yield capacity.

Welche Unterschiede auf Sortenebene bestehen hinsichtlich der Ökostabilität? Dazu wurden auf Basis von mehrortigen und mehrjährigen Ergebnissen aus Sortenversuchen in Brandenburg und unter Nutzung biostatistischer Parameter verschiedene Roggensorten analysiert. Die Sortenbewertung zur Ökostabilität und Ertragsleistung umfasste neben der deskriptiven Statistik und Varianzanalyse folgende Parameter: Ökovalenz, Ökoregression und Floating Checks. Zusätzlich wurden verschiedene Einflussgrößen auf die Ertragsvariabilität geschätzt und die Sortenreaktion auf unterschiedliche Witterungsbedingungen anhand der klimatischen Wasserbilanz geprüft. Abschließend erfolgte eine kurze Bewertung der verwendeten Parameter und Methoden. Die Ergebnisse der Sortenversuche zeigten, dass die Umwelt (Ort × Jahr) den stärksten Einfluss auf die Ertragsvariabilität hatte. Gegenüber der Umweltwirkung war der Sorteneinfluss geringer. Trotzdem bestanden zwischen den Sorten deutliche Unterschiede hinsichtlich der Leistungsfähigkeit, Ökostabilität und der Reaktion auf differenzierte Umweltbedingungen. Die Hybridroggensorten erwiesen sich im Vergleich der Sortentypen als deutlich ertragsfähiger und tendenziell ökostabiler, vor allem auch unter trockenen Witterungsbedingungen. Die Ergebnisse sind für die Sortenprüfung und -bewertung, die Züchtung und die landwirtschaftliche Praxis gleichermaßen bedeutsam. Sie liefern Informationen zu den umweltabhängig variierenden Eigenschaften derSorten und bieten Unterstützung für die standortgerechte Sortenempfehlung sowie bestmögliche Sortenwahl durch Entwicklung eines Bewertungsschemas.

In the face of a changing climate, yield stability is becoming increasingly important for farmers and breeders. Long-term field experiments (LTEs) generate data sets that allow the quantification of stability for different agronomic treatments. However, there are no commonly accepted guidelines for assessing yield stability in LTEs. The large diversity of options impedes comparability of results and reduces confidence in conclusions. Here, we review and provide guidance for the most commonly encountered methodological issues when analysing yield stability in LTEs. The major points we recommend and discuss in individual sections are the following: researchers should (1) make data quality and methodological approaches in the analysis of yield stability from LTEs as transparent as possible; (2) test for and deal with outliers; (3) investigate and include, if present, potentially confounding factors in the statistical model; (4) explore the need for detrending of yield data; (5) account for temporal autocorrelation if necessary; (6) make explicit choice for the stability measures and consider the correlation between some of the measures; (7) consider and account for dependence of stability measures on the mean yield; (8) explore temporal trends of stability; and (9) report standard errors and statistical inference of stability measures where possible. For these issues, we discuss the pros and cons of the various methodological approaches and provide solutions and examples for illustration. We conclude to make ample use of linking up data sets, and to publish data, so that different approaches can be compared by other authors and, finally, consider the impacts of the choice of methods on the results when interpreting results of yield stability analyses.
