The Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) is the most widely used but it is not validated in the Spanish-speaking Latin American context. There are hardly any cross-cultural studies of nomophobia. The main objectives are to:1) adapt and validate the NMP-Q in a Mexican sample; 2) analyse gender, age and cross-cultural invariance; 3) examine the differences between countries. The Mexican sample consisted of 19,226 participants (63.1% girls), and the Spanish sample of 3897 (46% girls), aged between 14 and 19 years. The model of four-factors explained by a second-order factor fitted the data adequately. Satisfactory reliability indices were obtained, invariance by sex and age, and cross-cultural invariance. Higher scores were found in females, in adolescents aged 14-16 years, and in the Spaniards. The NMP-Q allows identifying problems of nomophobia in Mexicans and comparing them with Spaniards.

New technology and social media continue to grow, and human beings seem to be more connected to each other currently than ever before. Students are continually online, connected to their social network sites (SNS), and they are the most avid users (Alzougool, 2018, Cohen et al., 2018). The literature shows contradictory and inconclusive results regarding the associations between technology usage, well-being, and mental health, compounded by the variety of measures used. A more nuanced assessment of technology and SNSs usage, such as users' perceptions, and the questions of how and why individuals engage with digital technology is important for making theoretical and empirical progress regarding the relationships between technology use, well-being, and mental health (Vannucci et al., 2017). Moreover, another factor that is important to consider and that plays a bidirectional and interactive effect on mental health is sleep (Vedaa et al., 2016). Several studies have reported associations between sleep problems, anxiety, and other mental health problems (Hussain & Griffiths, 2019). However, there is a lack of research examining the construct fear of missing out as a predictor of technology usage at night-time, and the associations between this usage, sleep difficulties, well-being, and anxiety. Therefore, this thesis' aims were to: (1) examine the relationships between technology usage, anxiety, and well-being through the assessment of individual perceptions, behaviours, and affective states in university students in three countries (Spain, UK and Turkey), and (2) to determine the possible mechanisms (social comparison, fear of missing out) that mediate and predict these relationships. To achieve the above aims, new measures were developed and validated across the three different cultures. The current thesis developed new scales of well-being perceptions (8 items), anxiety perceptions (7 items) and social comparison (4 items) in relation to electronic devices and SNS usage (see appendix I). The first study of this thesis was formed by a pilot study (N = 27), a focus group (N = 4), and a panel of experts (N = 3), that aimed to develop and enhance the content validity of the new measures. Moreover, the researcher assessed the cross-cultural measurement invariance of these new measures in three different countries UK (N = 121), Spain (N = 111), and Turkey (N = 221). These three studies are integrated through the thesis. Overall, the findings suggested that the new measures are well-suited to assess well-being, anxiety perceptions, and social comparison in relation to electronic devices and SNS usage in the three different countries. Findings offer an outstanding contribution in the scope of electronic devices and SNS usage, as the new measures can be used as reference points by researchers, practitioners and mental health professionals. Despite some notable differences across culture, there are remarkable similarities that provide confidence in the measures across divergent samples. The results found in this thesis suggest that social comparison as a construct specifically related to SNS usage assessed through the measure developed by the researcher is a key mechanism. Outcomes indicate that this measure mediates the relationships between perceptions of anxiety and satisfaction with life; between well-being perceptions and satisfaction with life; between well-being perceptions and loneliness; and between anxiety perceptions and trait anxiety. Finally, results from the last study of this thesis, N = 159 participants from UK, and N = 172 participants from Spain, revealed that fear of missing out is a predictor of night-time usage of electronic devices, and that this usage is a predictor of lower well-being levels, higher sleep problems and anxiety. This thesis has given attention to solid theoretical perspectives such as the Social Comparison Theory (Festinger, 1954), Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000), the interpersonal connection behaviours framework, and the stimulation and displacement hypothesis. Another strength of this thesis is that by checking at the measurement level, and at the structural level, the constructs' functionality has been shown. Furthermore, the cross-cultural nature of this thesis, has provided added value to the constructs. In addition, the changing nature of SNS platforms, make examining the usage of these difficult in this area of research. Therefore, the development of measures that are focused on the specific context of SNS and electronic devices usage, but without the focus on a specific SNS, reduces the risk of obsolescence and adds a cross-time crucial advantage.

Author(s): Vanessa Caba Machado [sup.1] , David Mcilroy [sup.1] , Francisca M. Padilla Adamuz [sup.2] , Rebecca Murphy [sup.3] , Susan Palmer-Conn [sup.1] Author Affiliations: (1) grid.4425.7, 0000 0004 0368 [...], Research shows that use of social network sites is associated with loneliness and this may be amplified in tertiary students by their transition from home life, especially if they struggle to integrate with peers. The buffering effects of social support may offer a solution and the online dimension may offer a suitable outlet for lonely and isolated students. In this study, N = 111 university students, aged 18-40, completed a frequency assessment of Instagram and WhatsApp, the Spanish version of the UCLA loneliness scale and the Multidimensional Scale of Social Support in an online survey. The statistical analysis was completed by Structural Equation Modeling using AMOS 25.0. The construct validity of social network sites was established by good factor loadings for WhatsApp and Instagram, but Facebook was excluded as it did not load adequately on to the latent measurement model, in keeping with the diminishing trend for Facebook use in young students. Loneliness emerged as pivotal in a mediation model, and online social support from friends/significant others, emerged as salient in the predictive model in contrast to family. However, these associations may not have the same advantageous weight for mature students given the observed negative associations with age. Results may have implications for policy and planning through highlighting the psychological variables that are operative in the dynamics of integration, retention, and adjustment to tertiary level experience.

Background: Machine learning (ML) techniques have been recently proposed as a solution for aiding in the prevention and diagnosis of microbiome-related diseases. Here, we applied auto-ML approaches on real-case metagenomic datasets from saliva and subgingival peri-implant biofilm microbiomes to explore a wide range of ML algorithms to benchmark best-performing algorithms for predicting peri-implantitis (PI). Methods: A total of 100 metagenomes from the NCBI SRA database (PRJNA1163384) were used in this study to construct biofilm and saliva metagenomes datasets. Two AI-driven auto-ML approaches were used on constructed datasets to generate 100 ML-based models for the prediction of PI. These were compared with statistically significant single-microorganism-based models. Results: Several ML algorithms were pinpointed as suitable bespoke predictive approaches to apply to metagenomic data, outperforming the single-microorganism-based classification. Auto-ML approaches rendered high-performing models with Receiver Operating Characteristic–Area Under the Curve, sensitivities and specificities between 80% and 100%. Among these, classifiers based on ML-driven scoring of combinations of 2–4 microorganisms presented top-ranked performances and can be suitable for clinical application. Moreover, models generated based on the saliva microbiome showed higher predictive performance than those from the biofilm microbiome. Conclusions: This feasibility study bridges complex AI research with practical dental applications by benchmarking ML algorithms and exploring oral microbiomes as foundations for developing intuitive, cost-effective, and clinically relevant diagnostic platforms. Social networks are used daily by almost all adolescents and young people. They are used extensively, and their positive aspects are well-known, but they present multiple risks. Parents' mediation (PM) in their children's use of social networks (SNs) to prevent numerous problems has been recently researched. This systematic review analyzed works published since 2012 about online PM strategies concerning the use of SNs by children/adolescents aged between 9 and 18 years old. Following the PRISMA protocol, this review was submitted to Prospero (ID: CRD42022345033), five electronic databases were examined (WOS, SCOPUS, ERIC, ProQuest Psychology, and PubMed), and to assess the risk of bias the ROBIS tool was used. 32 papers were selected. The results indicate that PM strategies (especially the restrictive strategies over the enabling ones) effectively reduce the time spent on SNs and their associated risks. However, it is unclear whether one type of strategy is more effective or whether a combination of the different strategies, depending on the problem to be addressed, is most effective. Finally, no studies have been found that have analyzed the relationship between PM strategies and the benefits associated with the use of SNs. Possible lines of action for future programs and research are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The human oral microbiome is a critical reservoir for antibiotic resistance; however, subgingival peri-implant biofilms remain underexplored in this context. We aimed to explore the prevalence and distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in metagenomes derived from saliva and subgingival peri-implant biofilms. Methods: A total of 100 metagenome datasets from 40 individuals were retrieved from the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) database. Of these, 20 individuals had exclusively healthy implants and 20 had both healthy and affected implants with peri-implantitis. ARGs and their taxonomic assignments were identified using the ABRicate tool, and plasmid detection was performed with PlasmidFinder. Results: Four plasmid replicons were identified in 72 metagenomes, and 55 distinct ARGs from 13 antibiotic classes were detected in 89 metagenomes. ARGs conferring resistance to macrolides–lincosamides–streptogramins, tetracyclines, beta-lactams, and fluoroquinolones were the most prevalent. The msr(D) and mef(A) genes showed the highest prevalence, except in saliva samples from individuals with healthy implants, where mef(A) ranked fourth. A pairwise PERMANOVA of principal coordinate analysis based on Jaccard distances revealed that saliva samples exhibited significantly greater ARG diversity than subgingival biofilm samples (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed between healthy and peri-implantitis-affected subgingival biofilm groups (p > 0.05). The taxonomic origins of ARGs were also analyzed to understand their distribution and potential impact on oral microbial communities. Conclusions: Resistome profiles associated with both peri-implant health and disease showed no significant differences and higher salivary abundance of ARGs compared to subgingival biofilm samples. - Abstract
Background/Objectives: this study aimed to study the association of dental caries and erosion in athletes with dietary and oral health habits. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the Sports Dentistry department of a university clinic. Intraoral examination included the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS II) index and the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE). A questionnaire was completed with sociodemographic data, and dietary and oral hygiene habits. An inferential and multivariable regression analysis was performed to study the association of dental caries and erosion with confounding variables. Results: A total of 80 athletes were included. The prevalence of dental caries and erosion was 50.0% and 40%, respectively. Significant associations were observed between self-perceived oral health and caries lesions, with "Good" (−5.01, p < 0.001) and "Very good" (−5.46, p < 0.001) perceptions linked to fewer lesions. BEWE scores revealed significant associations with meal frequency uncertainty (−12.56, p = 0.014) and uncertainty about the last dental visit (8.82, p = 0.014). Self-perceived oral health as "Good" or "Very good" was associated with lower dental erosion (p < 0.010). Other demographic and behavioral factors were not significantly associated with caries or erosion. Conclusions: this cohort of athletes exhibited a high prevalence of dental caries and erosion, with associated dietary and oral hygiene habits. These results highlight the need for targeted dietary counseling and oral health education for athletes, whose nutritional needs may lead to increased consumption of sugar-rich diets. ESSENTIAL oils ,CRYPTOCOCCUS neoformans ,CANDIDA albicans ,CYTOTOXINS ,CRYPTOCOCCOSIS - Abstract
The leaves of Citrus deliciosa Tenore were collected in southern Brazil, dried, and subjected to the hydrodistillation process to obtain the essential oil. The extraction of essential oil yielded 0.97% ± 0.04. The chromatographic profile of this compound revealed 11 substances, being methyl N-methyl-anthranilate (75.1%), γ-terpinene (13.8%), and Limonene (7%) as major substances. The essential oil shows antifungal action against all tested yeasts, with promising action against Cryptococcus neoformans, Cryptococcus gattii, and Trichosporon asahii. This compound was also able to inhibit the biofilm production of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis, and T. asahii. The essential oil of tangerine showed weak antioxidant action. It did not show cytotoxicity in human mononuclear cells. It is hoped that these results may guide future studies for the production of formulations that can be used in the treatment of biofilms caused by yeasts, as well as in candidiasis, cryptococcosis, and/or trichosporonosis. This study evaluates the impact of video-based approaches on health education. PUBMED, Web of Science, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and LILACS databases were searched from their inception until November 2022. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized studies on interventions were included in this review. Studies were grouped according to their reported learning outcomes. A random effects meta-analysis was performed. Meta-regression analyses were used to explore the effects of confounding variables on the overall estimates. Forty studies were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that video-based learning (VBL) has a significant effect on 'knowledge acquisition' in dentistry (Cohen's d = 2.18), moderate effect in medicine (Cohen's d = 0.67); moderate effect on 'skills development' in medicine (Cohen's d = 0.76) and nursing (Cohen's d = 0.59); overall moderate effect on 'attitude' (Cohen's d = 0.74). Egger's test was performed to assess potential publication bias. VBL offers a valuable educational tool for knowledge acquisition, skill development, and attitude changes in health education. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are also discussed. To strengthen the evidence base, future research should address the limitations found, such as the high risk of bias (RoB), and employ rigorous study designs when investigating the role of multimedia learning in various academic disciplines. Digital competence entails the healthy, safe, and responsible use of digital technologies to take engage in society, to learn, work and to interact with. However, the use of digital devices is not exempt of risks. The objectives of this study were to analyze the mediating effect of fear of missing out (FoMO) on phubbing and nomophobia, and to explore the perception of the use of Internetconnected devices among 522 Spanish university students, with an average age of 27.11 years. The 80.8% are women and 68.2% study degrees related with Educational Sciences. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining bivariate correlation with structural equation modelling (SEM), and qualitative content analysis. SEM analysis revealed that FoMO had a significant effect on nomophobia and phubbing. Qualitative content analysis underlined that the time spent, problematic use, and sense of dependence were the main concerns for participants. It is emphasized that the plethora of ICT opportunities exposes individuals to risk contexts, necessitating media education to mitigate psychological and social consequences stemming from Internet risks. Aim: We aimed to explore whether there is an association between maternal perceived infant discomfort due to suggestive gastrointestinal alterations and oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) through a survey. Materials and Methods: The present study included two main phases involving Portuguese-speaking parents with full-term infants aged 2–12 weeks old who were not previously hospitalized in a neonatal nursery. First, the original French Infant Colic Questionnaire (ColiQ) was translated, cross-culturally adapted and validated to Portuguese (ColiQ-PT). Then, a survey was distributed, and included sociodemographics, the ColiQ-PT, an oral health value scale, OHRQoL, self-perceived periodontal status, and smoking and oral health habits. Data were analyzed through inferential, correlation and multivariate logistic models in this cross-sectional study. Results: The ColiQ-PT revealed reliability and validity. From a total of 421 responses, higher infant discomfort was correlated with less maternal professional dental care prioritization (ρ = −0.096, p < 0.05). Self-perceived periodontitis correlated with all items of OHRQoL (p < 0.001), all seven OHIP-14 domains, and with the physical (p < 0.001), psychological (p = 0.006), and social (p = 0.011) super-domains. While the infant-related score was associated with baby age (p = 0.023) and physical pain (p = 0.040) related to OHRQoL, the parent score was associated with education (p = 0.005), unemployment (p = 0.035), and physical pain (p = 0.017). The total ColiQ-PT score was significantly associated with more deteriorated social disability related to maternal OHRQoL (ρ = −0.130, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Perceived infant discomfort seems to be linked to maternal deteriorated OHRQoL. This finding highlights the importance of prioritizing oral health in postpartum care. Further research is needed to explore the mechanisms underlying this association and to develop targeted interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
