The information of how the high climatic variability in the south‐west Buenos Aires Province (SWBS) region, Argentina, impacts on existing cow–calf operations is needed. This research uses a combination of quantitative (modelling) and qualitative (workshops) methodologies. The objective was to assess, under interannual climate variability, the productive and economic performance and greenhouse gas emissions and the marginal value of additional feed of four cow–calf systems arranged as a potential farm innovation path in the SWBS, Argentina. Modelling results showed that along this technological path where forage crops are decreased, perennial pastures are increased and anticipated weaning is included, productive and economic outcomes increased and the emission intensity decreased. How extra feeds may be used to cope with seasonal and interannual feeding was also identified. Moreover, barriers to adopt the suggested farm innovation path were identified by farmers, consultants and extensionists and strategies and their implication discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A large gap between actual and potential herbage production of tall fescue is a major limitation for livestock production systems in Argentina. The objectives of this work were to (a) calibrate and test the ability of a published pasture–soil water model to represent herbage growth dynamics of tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh.] under different growing conditions, using data from controlled field experiments; (a) use the evaluated model to predict the magnitude and time of the year that N or soil water would constrain tall fescue from attaining its potential growth rate in the south‐eastern Pampas of Argentina; and (c) quantify herbage production gains and temporal variability for a proposed improved management practice (IMP) of N fertilizer under different meteorological and soils scenarios. After tall fescue‐specific calibration, the model accurately represented the response of tall fescue herbage mass to irrigation and N fertilization (root mean square error of prediction <550 kg DM ha−1, R2 >.70) observed in thirteen single‐season, controlled, field experiments. Results from a 40‐year simulation show that the gap between fertilized and unfertilized tall fescue pastures in Argentina can exceed 14 t DM ha−1 year−1. The proposed IMP maximized responses to N in autumn and early spring, reducing the annual herbage production gaps by 38%. The effect of IMP on annual herbage production was larger (4–5 t DM ha−1 year−1) than the effect due to variability in soils' ability to store water (2–4 t DM ha−1 year−1) or annual variability in meteorological conditions (±1–2 t DM ha−1 year−1). This work provides a sound modelling approach to identify, for a particular forage species and site, most of the main gaps of herbage production; and to quantify, without the need of long‐term, expensive field studies, some of the potential gains (and risks associated with temporal variability), that could be achieved by producers. In addition, our results clearly indicate that site‐specific calibration is required for the model to provide accurate predictions and sound management advice to farmers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the productive, economic, methane emissions performance and the marginal value of additional feed (MVF) for the different cow-calf systems from Bahía Blanca and Coronel Rosales. A dynamic "whole-farm" model (SIMUGAN) and regional data was used to evaluate four cow-calf system scenarios based on changes in pasture area and management policies as the weaning date: Traditional (Trad), Transitional 1 (Trans1), Transitional 2 (Trans2) and High Technology (HTech). The increase in productivity was positively associated with gross margin [GM($/ha)=-1488.6+30.2 × beef production, R2 0.99] and negatively associated with methane emission intensity [IMC(kgCH4CO2-e/kg live weight produced)=20.4-0.1 × production, R2 0.98]. The MVF ($/KgMS/ha) is a systemic indicator for strategic supplementation opportunities, and Trad and Trans1 achieved higher values than Trans2 and Tecn. Overall, the scenarios showed higher VMA when during winter and spring seasons, followed by the annual feeding. This global assessment showed positive opportunities for improving system productivity based on perennial pastures. The objective of the present work was to evaluate productive, economic and greenhouse gas (GHG) indicators in typical cow-calf systems located in Flooding Pampas (conformed by two zones, Salado River Basin and Laprida Depression) and to test different technological improvement regionally advised by INTA. The thesis includes a) the development and incorporation of a greenhouse gases (GHG) simulation submodel to a pre-existing bioeconomical whole-farm model, b) identification of main types of cow-calf farms in the Flooding Pampas from a local database, c) to simulate productive, economic and GHG emission intensity indicators (cradle-to gate using life cycle assessment, LCA) of two contrasting regional farms (Medium-scale traditional farmer, Tr, and Large-scale local technified enterprise, Te) d) to evaluate the impact on productive, economic and GHG emission intensity indicators of the previously described of contrasting typical farms with the application of technology improvements (5 and 10% of the farm area allocated to fescue pasture area managed with Good Practice Management (GPM) and first mating anticipation of heifers (from 27 to 15 months age) in those scenarios with 10% of GPM fescue pasture. The GHG submodel was based on internationally accepted equations and arranged as a cradle-to-farm gate LCA. The submodel allows estimating two emission categories: first, the direct and indirect emissions of methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide from the livestock production activities in the farms, and second, the indirect emissions from farm inputs. The GHG submodel was incorporated into a bioeconomic whole-farm simulator of daily time-step (SIMUGAN) in order to assess productive, economic and GHG emission indicators. Regional information (productive indicators, forage resources, animal feeding practices, reproduction, animal health practices, and social information) about 115 farms from an available survey was processed to obtain cow-calf farm typologies. No significant differences were found between zones (Salado River Basin and Laprida Depression), therefore after a variable selection, a conglomerate analysis was used to identify the four farm clusters: traditional system (Group 2: Medium-scale traditional farmer) and three technified systems (Groups 1 and 4: Medium- and large-scale technified enterprise, respectively, and Group 3: Large-scale local technified enterprise). Overall mean stocking rate was 0.72 cow unit ha-1 , but with better productive indicators in technified groups. Within technified clusters, main differences were associated to the farmer and his/her family´s residence, farm employees, farm ownership, uptake of agricultural consultancy and adoption of specific animal management practices. Traditional systems were based on natural grasslands and farmers and their families usually live in the farm or in a town nearby. Technified systems include cultivate pastures, winter and summer crops in addition to natural grasslands. GHG intensities per unit of product (EI) varied accordingly to the intensification level in a similar trend for Tr and Te scenarios (between 16.4 and 19.9 kg CO2eq kg PV-1 ). The combination of GPM to fescue pastures up to 10% of farm with an early (15 mo) first mating reduced EI up to 17%. Results suggest that it is feasible to reduce EI by the adoption of available technologies. This whole thesis performs to the methodological contribution of potential application to other farm databases or other productions, and in particular, the description of regional livestock farm typology may contribute to specific technology transfer plans by agricultural institutions. Although complementary experimental information may be required, this study provides useful insights regarding GHG mitigation opportunities for policy makers and farmers. The objective of this work was to explore specific alternatives (increasing stocking rate and N application to pastures) to intensify cow-calf systems from the Laprida Depression, Buenos Aires, by attempting to improve system productive and economic performance meanwhile decreasing their variability, all under interannual climatic effects. The present thesis includes a) To test the ability and flexibility of the biophysical pasture model DairyMod to represent herbage mass accumulation of tall fescue pastures (Festuca arundinacea Schreb) from Argentina under several environmental conditions that included different seasons, nitrogen levels and irrigation. b) To model the whole-farm responses from nitrogen pasture fertilization applied to tall fescue pastures with different strategies (season of application and % of the farm area fertilized) within a good practice pasture management. Virtual experimentation included different stocking rates (0.9, 1.1 and 1.3 head/ha) under interannual climatic variability. c) To estimate the combined marginal value of feed (the possible gross economic benefit of additional feed on offer during an annual cycle, MVF), with risk assessment under the expected variability of climate and input and output prices to define better management strategies to overcome feed gaps in livestock systems. DairyMod calibration showed that herbage mass accumulation of tall fescue pastures under a wide range of climatic and management conditions was simulated with reasonable accuracy. Across all datasets mean bias ranged from -136 and 288 kg DM ha-1 and with mean predicted error between 25 and 32%, irrigated data presented the highest deviation. Modelling Efficiency ranged from 0.5 in Autumn with values higher than 0.75 in the rest of the data. Prediction accuracy was also indicated by bias correction factor (1.09) and the variance ratio (0.87). Additionally, the model assumption that optimum N concentration stays constant through herbage mass accumulation was substituted with the application of a reference critical N dilution curve observed for temperate forage grasses, and both options were simulated. Modelled N concentration using a reference critical N dilution curve matched better field results. Nitrogen fertilization (100 kg/ha) applied in either autumn or spring yielded a nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of 20.1 and 8.3 kg pasture DM/kg N applied, respectively. Autumn dressing also had within a carry-over for extra pasture growth in the following spring yielded an average final NUE of 20.8 DM/kg N applied. In Average years, weaner calf LW production and gross margin increased linearly as function of SR. Autumn and spring N fertilization to the 20% of the farm area in dry autumn and dry spring years, increased weaner calf LW production up to 1.1 SR, with no additional benefits when the 40% of the farm was fertilized. On 1.3 SR, with dry autumn and dry spring conditions decreased weaners production which was not mitigated by any of the N applications. Dry seasons reduced gross margin, which was compensated at SR 1.1 when nitrogen was applied to 20% of the farm both in autumn or spring. At SR 1.3, dry seasons reduced gross margins, and none of the N strategies were able to recover the conditions to those in Average years. The assessments of the marginal value of feed showed a positive impact of additional forage only above 1.1 head /ha and increased with SR, whereas at the low SR it was mostly negative. At 1.1 and 1.2 head/ha, allocating additional feed in autumn produced the highest return (0.04 and 0.08US$/kg DM) than feed provided at other times of the year (averaging 0.02 and 0.05 US$/kg DM). Otherwise, at SR 1.3 extra feed on winter was the dominant condition (MVF was within 0.017 and 0.194 US$/kgDM). Bio-physical variables of livestock demand and seasonality of pasture growth were the main drivers of the marginal value of feed variability. This thesis help to highlight the importance of scaling and integrating disciplinary research outputs to the whole system level modelling the key biophysical and economic system variables while the effects of climatic variability is also considered. Therefore it may contribute to fill the gap between research products and technological innovation by beef cattle producers. EEA Balcarce Fil: Berger, Horacio.
