In the present study we undertook an integrative approach, using both morphological and molecular data (COI-5P + rbcL), to assess the presence of Laurencia pyramidalis in Lusitanian Macaronesia.We studied type material of L. pyramidalis from the herbarium of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the Netherlands, and designated a lectotype and syntypes. Vegetative and reproductive features of L. pyramidalis were observed and we included a specimen from the type locality in our molecular analyses.We also investigated the geographical distribution of Laurenciella marilzae, a species recently described from the Canary Islands. Barcode sequences (COI-5P and rbcL) were generated for L. pyramidalis from the type locality (Normandy, France), the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands, and for L. marilzae from its type locality (Tenerife, Canary Islands), the Azores and Brazil.

The diversity of the Laurencia complex is being assessed in tropical and subtropical Atlantic by an international cooperation project involving Brazil, Mexico, Spain (Canary Islands), Portugal (Azores and Madeira) and USA (Florida) on the base of molecular data allied to a detailed morphological study of species. The diversity of the complex was analyzed for the first time for the Atlantic Ocean, including specimens from all five localities, using the plastid 23S rRNA gene (UPA) which has been investigated as potential DNA Barcode marker for photosynthetic eukaryotes. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene (COI-5P) was also used as DNA barcode for the same set of species, and the rbcL gene was used for phylogenetic inferences. The range of genetic variation was compared for the three markers. The UPA proved to be more conserved; however, the same genetic groups were resolved with each of the three markers confirming the six genera currently established for the complex: Chondrophycus, Laurencia, Laurenciella, Palisada, Osmundea and Yuzurua.

Basado en análisis morfológicos y moleculares, en la actualidad el complejo Laurencia (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) incluye seis géneros (Chondrophycus, Laurencia, Laurenciella, Osmundea, Palisada y Yuzurua). El objetivo principal de este estudio preliminar es valorar a nivel molecular la posible existencia de un nuevo género dentro del complejo Laurencia presente en las Islas Canarias, así como establecer posibles relaciones filogenéticas entre éste y otros taxones del complejo citados en la Macaronesia.

Máster Universitario en Biología Marina: Biodiversidad y Conservación Es cada vez más común el estudio del efecto del cambio climático sobre los organismos del medio marino, ya que la estructura y funcionamiento de sus ecosistemas se ven alterados por el aumento de las temperaturas y la acidificación del océano. En este trabajo se evaluó la influencia de dichos fenómenos sobre dos macroalgas pardas no calcáreas, "Lobophora sp." y "Cystoseira abies-marina", organismos indicadores de los procesos de meridionalización de la biota Canaria. Para ello, se analizaron los efectos de distintos tratamientos de pH y temperatura sobre el crecimiento, producción y consumo de O2 de estas algas, a través de experimentación manipulativa en el laboratorio. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron un efecto positivo en "Lobophora sp." en condiciones de cambio climático, aumentando su crecimiento, producción y consumo de O2. En "Cystoseira abies-marina", aunque su tasa de producción de O2 aumentó en condiciones de cambio climático, no lo hizo así su crecimiento. Presumiblemente la energía obtenida durante la fotosíntesis por esta especie pudo haber sido reconducida hacia mecanismos paliativos del efecto negativo de la temperatura elevada. Futuros trabajos son necesarios para comprender mejor la fisiología de estas dos macroalgas formadoras de hábitat en los ecosistemas costeros de las Islas Canarias. The study of the effects of Climate Change on the marine environment is increasingly common. The structure and function of marine ecosystems are altered by increasing temperatures and ocean acidification. This study evaluated the influences of such phenomena on two non-calcareous brown macroalgae, "Lobophora sp." and "Cystoseira abies-marina"; two indicator organisms on the tropicalization process of the biota of the Canary Islands. The effects of several pH and temperature treatments on growth, production and consumption of O2 of the algae were analyzed through experimental manipulation in the laboratory. Results showed a positive effect on "Lobophora sp." under climate change conditions, with increasing growth, as well as production and consumption rates of O2. For "Cystoseira abies-marina", despite the increase in O2 production, no effects of climate change conditions were detected in growth rates. Presumably, energy produced during photosynthesis by this species could have been redirected towards mechanisms aimed to ameliorate the negative effects of elevated temperature. Further studies will be necessary to better understand the physiology of these macroalgae that are habitat shaping organisms for the Canary Islands ecosystems.
