Abstract

Background: The Editorial Board of EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry releases a biyearly highlight commentary to update the readership on trends in the field of radiopharmaceutical development. Results: This commentary of highlights has resulted in 23 different topics selected by each member of the Editorial Board addressing a variety of aspects ranging from novel radiochemistry to first in man application of novel radiopharmaceuticals. Conclusion: Trends in radiochemistry and radiopharmacy are highlighted demonstrating the progress in the research field being the scope of EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry.

Abstract

The work deals with atypical conjunctival infection of Czech patient with Oestrus ovis larvae. Ophthalmomyiasis is infestation of mammalian eyes by the larvae or worms of some flies. The most common cause of human myiasis is the Sheep. Shepherds are infected in habitats, but human eye disease outside the areas of abundant hamsters is rare. We describe a case of eye disease in a middle-aged man from the Czech Republic who spent a summer holiday seven weeks before examination in the north of Greece. During the first examination he was completely treated and no further problems were reported. Ophthalmomyiasis externa should be considered as a possible infection of travelers to the southern endemic regions when returning with an acute causeless onset of a one-sided foreign body sensation in the eye.

22. Detoxification strategy of wheat straw hemicellulosic hydrolysate for cultivating Trichoderma reesei:a contribution towards the wheat straw biorefinery

Abstract

The urgency for reducing the dependence on fossil-based materials is increasing the interest in the utilization of renewable feedstocks. Lignocellulosic residual biomass can be used as feedstock to produce chemicals and energy without generating food security problems. Wheat straw (WS) has a clear potential for developing sustainable processes in a circular bioeconomy context. However, the development of processes requires a strategy for utilizing the hemicellulosic, cellulosic, and lignin fractions. This work covers the utilization of the hemicellulosic fraction as the first stage of a wheat straw biorefinery. The aim was to evaluate the hydrolysis of WS by using liquid hot water (LHW) treatment, the detoxification of the produced wheat straw hydrolysate (WSH), and the cultivation of Trichoderma reeseiusing it as the only carbon source as proof of detoxification. LHW treatment was performed at 160 °C and 90 min and yielded a WSH rich in monomeric and oligomeric saccharides (~ 14 g/L) and containing degradation products in low concentration (furfural, HMF, and acetic acid). As part of the development of the extraction and detoxification strategy, we determined the specific inhibition thresholds for T. reeseifor the mentioned degradation products. Detoxification was carried out by evaporation by modifying the % of volume evaporated and the pH of the solution. Approximately 55.9% of acetic acid and 100% of furfural were removed from the WSH. The fungal biomass obtained in the medium containing WSH was equivalent to 98% of the biomass obtained in the control medium.

42. Modification of charge transport in nanostructured TiO2−x Schottky diodes via post fabrication annealing.

Abstract

An ordered, crack-free array of anatase TiO2 nanotubes were prepared via anodization and annealing at 550 °C. Oxygen vacancies are known to improve photocatalytic activity in TiO2 and were introduced using a facile low vacuum annealing. Stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric films were followed by a conformal Pt deposition at 250 °C using atomic layer deposition resulting in a current rectifying device, or Schottky diode. Here, we investigated the current–voltage effects of a post thermal treatment using 350 °C and 400 °C. This paper presents reproducible improvements in the charge transport behavior after a 350 °C post-fabrication annealing process. Oxygen vacancies resulted in the formation of a shunt resistance behavior of 105 Ω and no overall performance improvements compared to stoichiometric films. Additionally, thermal treatments offered trap-based shifts from multiple trap distributions to a single trap distribution. This work hereby provides valuable experimental observations into understanding the effects of oxygen vacancies and effectively modifying the electronic properties of a conformal Pt/TiO2−x nanostructured junction using a facile post-thermal treatment.
