Abstract

L'institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) ayant acquis une grande expérience dans le domaine des catalyseurs d'hydrogénation, en particulier dans l'utilisation du nickel soluble et des catalyseurs bimétalliques à base de palladium, une étude a été effectuée pour évaluer le marché potentiel des catalyseurs d'hydrogénation intervenant dans la synthèse de quelques grands intermédiaires pétrochimiques : le cyclohexane, la cyclohexanone, les alcools oxo, le butanediol, le sorbitol, le toluylène diamine, l'hexaméthylène diamine, l'eau oxygénée et l'acide téréphtalique. Ce marché atteint pour les produits considérés 63 M$ pour 3500 t/an de catalyseurs commercialisés et représente globalement 7 % de celui des catalyseurs utilisés en pétrochimie. Les débouchés les plus importants sont ceux des catalyseurs nécessaires pour la production de toluylène diamine (14,4×10·6 $), d'hexaméthylène diamine (11,5×10·6 $) et d'eau oxygénée (11,5×10·6 $). Ces hydrogénations sont effectuées pour l'essentiel en présence de 3 métaux: le nickel, 2300 t/an, le cuivre, 680 t/an et le palladium, 560 t/an. Le nickel continue d'être utilisé en majeure partie sous forme de nickel de Raney. Le nickel soluble de I'IFP, bien qu'étant plus sensible au soufre et à l'eau, devrait pouvoir trouver des applications pour l'hydrogénation d'autres composés possédant des doubles liaisons aromatiques. Les catalyseurs au palladium s'imposent lorsque l'on recherche une sélectivité dans l'hydrogénation d'une fonction sans toucher à une autre fonction. L'exemple type est, dans la préparation de l'eau oxygénée, celui de l'hydrogénation des fonctions quinone sans toucher aux liaisons aromatiques. On the basis of the great experience gained by Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) in the field of hydrogenation catalysts, especially in using soluble nickel and bimetallic palladium-base catalysts, a survey was made to assess the potential market for hydrogenation catalysts used in the synthesis of the leading petrochemical building blocks, i. e. cyclohexane, cyclohexanone, oxo alcohols, butanediol, sorbitol, tolulene diamine, hexamethylene diamine, hydrogen peroxide and terephthalic acid. For all products considered, this market is $63 million for 3500 tons of catalysts sold per year, and it accounts for roughly 7% of all catalysts used in the petrochemical sector. The largest outlet is for catalysts required for the production of tolulene diamine ($14. 4 million), hexamethylene diamine ($11. 5 million) and hydrogen peroxide ($11. 6 million). Such hydrogenations are performed mainly in the presence of three metals, i. e. nickel (2300 t/year), copper (680 t/year) and palladium (560 t/year). Nickel continues to be used mostly in the form of Raney nickel. The soluble nickel developed by IFP, although more sensitive to sulfur and water, should be able to find applications for the hydrogenation of other compounds having aromatic double bonds. Palladium catalysts are required when selectivity is wanted in the hydrogenation of a function without touching another function. The typical example is the hydrogenation of quinone functions without touching the aromatic bonds in the preparation of hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract

Incidents in production systems are common and downtime is expensive.Applying an appropriate mitigating action quickly, such as changing a specificfirewall rule, reverting a change, or diverting traffic to a differentavailability zone, saves money. Incident localization is time-consuming since asingle failure can have many effects, extending far from the site of failure.Knowing how different system events relate to each other is necessary toquickly identify \emph{where} to mitigate. Our approach, Aggregate Comparisonof Traces (ACT), localizes incidents by comparing sets of traces (which captureevents and their relationships for individual requests) sampled from the mostrecent steady-state operation and during an incident. In our quantitativeexperiments, we show that ACT is able to effectively localize more than 99% ofincidents.

Abstract

International audience; BACKGROUND:Rituximab plus chemotherapy has been shown to be effective in patients with advanced-stage, previously untreated follicular lymphoma; nevertheless, most patients will have a relapse. Combination immunotherapy with lenalidomide and rituximab is an immunomodulatory regimen that has shown promising activity in patients with indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.METHODS:We conducted this multicenter, international, phase 3 superiority trial to evaluate rituximab plus lenalidomide, as compared with rituximab plus chemotherapy, in patients with previously untreated follicular lymphoma. Patients were randomly assigned to receive one of the two regimens, followed by maintenance monotherapy with rituximab. Treatment with rituximab plus lenalidomide consisted of 18 cycles of the two drugs, followed by rituximab maintenance therapy every 8 weeks for 12 cycles (six additional doses). Treatment with rituximab plus chemotherapy consisted of the investigator's choice of one of three rituximab-based regimens, followed by maintenance monotherapy with rituximab every 8 weeks for 12 cycles. The primary end points were complete response (confirmed or unconfirmed) at 120 weeks and progression-free survival.RESULTS:A total of 1030 patients were randomly assigned to receive rituximab plus lenalidomide (513 patients) or rituximab plus chemotherapy (517 patients). The rate of confirmed or unconfirmed complete response at 120 weeks was similar in the two groups: 48% (95% confidence interval [CI], 44 to 53) in the rituximab-lenalidomide group and 53% (95% CI, 49 to 57) in the rituximab-chemotherapy group (P=0.13). The interim 3-year rate of progression-free survival was 77% (95% CI, 72 to 80) and 78% (95% CI, 74 to 82), respectively. A higher percentage of patients in the rituximab-chemotherapy group had grade 3 or 4 neutropenia (32% vs. 50%) and febrile neutropenia of any grade (2% vs. 7%), and a higher percentage of patients in the rituximab-lenalidomide group had grade 3 or 4 cutaneous reactions (7% vs. 1%).CONCLUSIONS:Among patients with previously untreated follicular lymphoma, efficacy results were similar with rituximab plus lenalidomide and rituximab plus chemotherapy (with both regimens followed by rituximab maintenance therapy). Abstract

Transepithelial transport of [Na.sup.+] across the lung epithelium via amiloride-sensitive [Na.sup.+] channels (ENaC) regulates fluid volume in the lung lumen. Activators of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the adenosine monophosphate mimetic AICAR, and the biguanide metformin decreased amiloride-sensitive apical [Na.sup.+] conductance ([G.sub.Na+]) in human H441 airway epithelial cell monolayers. Cell-attached patch-clamp recordings identified two distinct constitutively active cation channels in the apical membrane that were likely to contribute to [G.sub.Na+]: a 5-pS highly [Na.sup.+] selective ENaC-like channel (HSC) and an 18-pS nonselective cation channel (NSC). Substituting NaCl with NMDG-C1 in the patch pipette solution shifted the reversal potentials of HSC and NSC, respectively, from +23 mV to -38 mV and 0 mV to -35 mV. Amiloride at 1 [micro]M inhibited HSC activity and 56% of short-circuit current ([I.sub.sc]), whereas 10 [micro]M amiloride partially reduced NSC activity and inhibited a further 30% of [I.sub.sc]. Neither conductance was associated with CNG channels as there was no effect of 10 [micro]M pimoside on [I.sub.sc], HSC, or NSC activity, and 8-bromo-cGMP (0.3-0.1 mM) did not induce or increase HSC or NSC activity. Pretreatment of H441 monolayers with 2 mM AICAR inhibited HSC/NSC activity by 90%, and this effect was reversed by the AMPK inhibitor Compound C. All three ENaC proteins were identified in the apical membrane of H441 monolayers, but no change in their abundance was detected after treatment with AICAR. 22. Improving outcomes for young children in refugee families: lessons from somali parents’ experiences of play and social interaction in the UK

Abstract

Aims Adverse early child development and ill health risks poorer wellbeing, unemployment and criminal behaviour in later life. The children of disadvantaged migrants are at risk of delayed and disordered early development, with multiple factors potentially contributing to poor long term educational and social outcomes. Somali people are one of the world’s largest diasporas, following forced migration from conflict; in Bristol, Somali children are 5% of the child population – they have high attendance rates at Emergency Departments, do less well at school and are more often referred for help with developmental difficulties, including six times higher rates of referral for the possibility of autism. We explored psycho-social contexts for these challenges.Methods We asked six Somali mothers in Bristol about experiences of early childhood (both their own and subsequent observations) in Somalia and the UK, and of factors facilitating or restricting children’s early opportunities for play, social interaction and development. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were analysed using an interpretative phenomenological approach.Results In Somalia, mothers described a supportive, connected community and safe environment enabling children to play and learn together.In the UK, by contrast, multiple local stressors affected family wellbeing and social networks, and constrained children’s opportunities to play and interact, which may limit children’s opportunities for early play and social experiences and influence health decision-making.We have developed an Ecocultural model of challenges to young migrant children’s development, integrating epigenetics, psycho-social and cultural factors.We describe policy recommendations - to tailor statutory early childhood interventions for disadvantaged migrant communities, and for improvements to local environments for play and social interaction.We report case studies involving alignment of existing services, employing community link workers, hospital-community and statutory-voluntary sector collaborations, and Community Infrastructure Levy funding.Conclusion Our findings show how disadvantage can impair early child development and health in migrant families. Social isolation and lack of safe places to play are key points to address.Building resilience, social networks and child-friendly communities in children’s early years is likely to be most effective (and cost-effective) for improving young migrants’ outcomes.

Abstract

Weather and climate models are challenged by uncertainties and biases in simulating Southern Ocean (SO) radiative fluxes that trace to a poor understanding of cloud, aerosol, precipitation, and radiative processes, and their interactions. Projects between 2016 and 2018 used in situ probes, radar, lidar, and other instruments to make comprehensive measurements of thermodynamics, surface radiation, cloud, precipitation, aerosol, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and ice nucleating particles over the SO cold waters, and in ubiquitous liquid and mixed-phase clouds common to this pristine environment. Data including soundings were collected from the NSF–NCAR G-V aircraft flying north–south gradients south of Tasmania, at Macquarie Island, and on the R/V Investigator and RSV Aurora Australis. Synergistically these data characterize boundary layer and free troposphere environmental properties, and represent the most comprehensive data of this type available south of the oceanic polar front, in the cold sector of SO cyclones, and across seasons. Results show largely pristine environments with numerous small and few large aerosols above cloud, suggesting new particle formation and limited long-range transport from continents, high variability in CCN and cloud droplet concentrations, and ubiquitous supercooled water in thin, multilayered clouds, often with small-scale generating cells near cloud top. These observations demonstrate how cloud properties depend on aerosols while highlighting the importance of dynamics and turbulence that likely drive heterogeneity of cloud phase. Satellite retrievals confirmed low clouds were responsible for radiation biases. The combination of models and observations is examining how aerosols and meteorology couple to control SO water and energy budgets.

Abstract

We report on a rapid method for reagentless identification and discrimination of single bacterial cells in aqueous solutions using a combination of laser tweezers and confocal Raman spectroscopy (LTRS). The optical trapping enables capturing of individual bacteria in aqueous solution in the focus of the laser beam and levitating the captured cell well off the cover plate, thus maximizing the excitation and collection of Raman scattering from the cell and minimizing the unwanted background from the cover plate and environment. Raman spectral patterns excited by a near-infrared laser beam provide intrinsic molecular information for reageatless analysis of the optically isolated bacterium. In our experiments, six species of bacteria were used to demonstrate the capability of the confocal LTRS in the identification and discrimination between the diverse bacterial species at various growth conditions. We show that synchronized bacterial cells can be well-discriminated among the six species using principal component analyses (PCA). Unsynchronized bacterial cells that are cultured at stationary phases can also be well-discriminated by the PCA, as well as by a hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) of their Raman spectra. We also show that unsynchronized bacteria selected from random growth phases can be classified with the help of a generalized discriminant analysis (GDA). These findings demonstrate that the LTRS may find valuable applications in rapid sensing of microbial cells in diverse aqueous media.

34. No DNN Left Behind: Improving Inference in the Cloud with Multi-Tenancy

Abstract

With the rise of machine learning, inference on deep neural networks (DNNs) has become a core building block on the critical path for many cloud applications. Applications today rely on isolated ad-hoc deployments that force users to compromise on consistent latency, elasticity, or cost-efficiency, depending on workload characteristics. We propose to elevate DNN inference to be a first class cloud primitive provided by a shared multi-tenant system, akin to cloud storage, and cloud databases. A shared system enables cost-efficient operation with consistent performance across the full spectrum of workloads. We argue that DNN inference is an ideal candidate for a multi-tenant system because of its narrow and well-defined interface and predictable resource requirements.

The large Neodymium (Nd) isotopic variation in the Trinity Ophiolite Complex, California, is due to the reaction of a proto-peridotite with ascending basaltic melts, with varying Nd. The isotopic variation is not due to movement of the rare earth elements during interaction of the rock with seawater. The peridotites have a greater variation than the gabbroic massifs and the basic dykes.

Abstract

Pb isotopic analyses of stromatolitic limestones from the Schmidtsdrif Formation (Transvaal Dolomite) of South Africa give a late Archean isochron age of 2557 [+ or -]49 (2 sigma) Ma. The new date significantly changes the position of the Archean-Proterozoic boundary in the Kaapvaal province and suggests that a possible division of the Transvaal Supergroup is necessary. It also resolves the long-standing controversy about the ages of the Ventersdrop Supergroup, whose zicron U-Pb date of ca. 2.7 Ga must be more acceptable than the Rb-Sr dates of about 2.3 Ga. Our study provides a new example that demonstrates the great potential of employing the U-Pb systems of carbonate rocks for direct dating of sedimentary sequences.

Abstract

Social networks in modern societies are highly structured, usually involving frequent contact with a small number of unrelated ‘friends’1. However, contact network structures in traditional small-scale societies, especially hunter-gatherers, are poorly characterized. We developed a portable wireless sensing technology (motes) to study within-camp proximity networks among Agta and BaYaka hunter-gatherers in fine detail. We show that hunter-gatherer social networks exhibit signs of increased efficiency2 for potential information exchange. Increased network efficiency is achieved through investment in a few strong links among non-kin ‘friends’ connecting unrelated families. We show that interactions with non-kin appear in childhood, creating opportunities for collaboration and cultural exchange beyond family at early ages. We also show that strong friendships are more important than family ties in predicting levels of shared knowledge among individuals. We hypothesize that efficient transmission of cumulative culture3–6 may have shaped human social networks and contributed to our tendency to extend networks beyond kin and form strong non-kin ties. By developing wireless sensors to track social interactions among hunter-gatherers in the Republic of the Congo and the Philippines, Migliano et al. find that a few strong friendship ties connecting unrelated families lead to more efficient social networks.

49. Leaching and Reclamation of a Soil Irrigated with Moderate SAR Waters

Abstract

Irrigation with blended drainage water can damage soil structure, impair infiltration, and increase runoff and erosion. This loss of permeability is often attributed to the slaking of aggregrates and clay dispersion, which leads to pore plugging. Soil swelling is usually considered an important factor only when exchangeable sodium percentages (ESP) exceed 15%. We hypothesized that swelling is more important than generally recognized in reducing soil hydraulic conductivity (HC), and swelling can occur at low ESP. In this study we attempted to identify the mechanisms reducing HC and the reversibility of the processes during gypsum and sulfuric acid application. Synthetic drainage waters with sodium adsorption ratios (SAR) of 1, 3, 5, and 8 and electrolyte concentrations (C) of 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 [mmol.sub.c] [L.sup.-1], were leached through machine-packed soil columns to evaluate the effects of clay dispersion and swelling on HC. Following the initial leachings, the soils were amended with surface applied gypsum and [H.sub.2][SO.sub.4], and leached with deionized water. Clay concentration in the leachate was used as a measure of clay dispersion, and internal soil swelling was assumed to be proportional to changes in the water holding capacity at -22 kPa tension, Internal soil swelling at low electrolyte concentrations ([is less than] 12 [mmol.sub.c] [L.sub.-1]) reduced the number of large, free-draining pores and increased the water holding capacity of the soil at low tension. This loss in HC, which occurred at all SAR, was largely reversible with surface-applied gypsum. At SAR 5 and 8, there was irreversible plugging of soil pores by dispersed clay, as well as internal swelling. These findings suggest that even diluted drainage waters used for irrigation will have an adverse effect on soil structure, especially during rainfall.
