Abstract: Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. 9. Submarine films as narratives of masculinity

Abstract: The research for this thesis is on representations of masculinity in Anglo-American submarine films since 1943. The discussion will draw on relevant work on the representation of masculinity and popular cinema in film and cultural studies. In particular, the thesis will account for the notion of hegemony in relation to masculinity in the submarine film. Further, the notion of hegemonic masculinity will be addressed in terms of four key claims. These are as follows: that relations between groups are characterised solely by domination and subordination, that a singular hegemonic masculinity prevails at anyone time, that this masculinity is coherent, and that hegemonic masculinity is consistently dominant in relations of power. Through the reading of the films, this thesis will critique the notion of hegemonic masculinity in the following terms: a) the recurrent concern with the group emphasises teamwork and cooperation rather than domination and subordination. Even where these relations operate at the level of fantasy, they can suggest utopian possibilities of mutuality. b) This preoccupation with teamwork shows that the struggle between competing masculinities endorses difference in masculinity, not just a hegemonic masculinity. c) Rather than privileging hegemonic masculinity as coherent, this struggle leads to alliances between masculinities, in which hegemonic masculinity has to negotiate contradictions in masculinity. d) This account of submarine films therefore shows that masculinity involves the complex negotiation of differences and not solely the consistent privileging of hegemonic masculinity. The analysis will be organised into chapters that derive specifically from the following thematic concerns within the case study: nature, the masculine body, men's friendships, rationality, vision and power, ideological processes, and the submarine as masculine space. Through the discussion of these themes and the developments in submarine films, the thesis will show the extent to which representations of masculinity in the case study conform to assumptions about hegemonic masculinity and popular film.

12. The effect of land use on the N and P status of the Ythan, Don and Dee catchments in Northern East Scotland

Abstract: The impact of land use on the N and P status of three contrasting river catchments within the north east of Scotland was studied over time and along the length of each river. Annual mean NO₃-N concentrations increased significantly in the Ythan, Don (P<0.001) and Dee (P<0.05), from 1958 to 1992. Concentrations in the predominantly agricultural Ythan catchment showed the largest increase from 1.9 mg l^-1 in 1958 to 7.0 mg l^-1 in 1992. A significant increase in mean NO₃-N concentrations in the spring from 1980 to 1992 in the Ythan appeared to reflect the increased N fertiliser usage associated with a change from winter to spring cropping which was evident over this period. Annual mean NO₃-N loads over the period 1980-1992 were 1305, 2010 and 623 t yr^-1 for the Ythan, Don and Dee, respectively. Annual PO₄-P loads were 17.6, 40-1 and 16.8 t yr^-1 over the same time period for the Ythan, Don and Dee respectively. These loads were found to have associated errors in the range 16-24, 16-17 and 18-32% for NO₃-N, PO₄-P and total P respectively. Annual loss coefficients, calculated for NO₃-N, PO₄-P total P, Si and suspended sediment were 27.2, 0.180, 0.319, 26.1 and 73.5 kg ha^-1, respectively. Annual losses of N and P from forestry were calculated in the Kirkhill catchment, a small subcatchment of the Don and ranged from 0.6 to 2.5 kg ha^-1 depending on flow. Annual total P losses were also related to flow and ranged from 0.029 to 0.06 kg ha^-1. A nutrient budget calculated for the Kirkhill catchment found the annual loss of N from the catchment accounted for 44.5% of N inputs, in contrast, only 2.7% of P input to the catchment was detected in the output.

Abstract: The entire life cycle of a product, from the obtaining of the raw materials by mining or agriculture to the end of life (recycling or disposal), consists of many steps, some of which are much more harmful than the others. Whether we're considering global warming, ecotoxicity, or resource consumption, there are typically only one or two steps that cause the vast majority of the harm of the entire life cycle. These steps, known as hotspots, are the ones that we, as green chemists and chemical engineers, should be working on. There is little benefit to be obtained by fixing a step in the life cycle that is a minor contributor to harm. However, traditional practice in the field of green chemistry has been to spend time, energy, and materials to make a selected step greener without first checking whether the selected step is the one causing most of the harm. Therefore there is a need for greater utilization of life cycle assessments (LCA) of existing processes to identify the hotspots and for that identification to be the driver for the selection of new research projects and directions. Abstract: 1,3-Propanediol (PDO) can be produced by fermentation of glycerol, but the post-fermentation separation of the PDO from the aqueous medium is hampered by the low volatility and high hydrophilicity of PDO. A new method for separating hydrophilic products from water is proposed, called Solvent-Assisted Switchable Water (SASW). In this method, a hydrophilic water-miscible extraction solvent such as isopropanol is used to extract PDO from the aqueous phase. A CO2-switchable ionogen (N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylbutane-1,4-diamine, TMBDA), which forms a bicarbonate salt in the presence of CO2, salts out the isopropanol to prevent it from merging with the aqueous phase. The yield of extracted PDO was up to 73%, but the recovered PDO contained a significant amount of water and amine, showing that the selectivity of the extraction still has room for improvement. This new extraction technique might find utility in the extraction of hydrophilic products from water, if further development of the method leads to better extraction selectivity. Abstract: Just as on the land or in the ocean, atmospheric regions may be more or less hospitable to life. The aerobiosphere, or collection of living things in Earth's atmosphere, is poorly understood due to the small number and ad hoc nature of samples studied. However, we know viable airborne microbes play important roles, such as providing cloud condensation nuclei. Knowing the distribution of such microorganisms and how their activity can alter water, carbon, and other geochemical cycles is key to developing criteria for planetary habitability, particularly for potential habitats with wet atmospheres but little stable surface water. Coastal California has regular, dense fog known to play a major transport role in the local ecosystem. In addition to the significant local (1 km) geographical variation in typical fog, previous studies have found that changes in height above surface of as little as a few meters can yield significant differences in typical concentrations, populations and residence times. No single current sampling platform (ground-based impactors, towers, balloons, aircraft) is capable of accessing all of these regions of interest.A novel passive fog and cloud water sampler, consisting of a lightweight passive impactor suspended from autonomous aerial vehicles (UAVs), is being developed to allow 4D point sampling within a single fog bank, allowing closer study of small-scale (100 m) system dynamics. Fog and cloud droplet water samples from low-altitude aircraft flights in nearby coastal waters were collected and assayed to estimate the required sample volumes, flight times, and sensitivity thresholds of the system under design.125 cloud water samples were collected from 16 flights of the Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely Piloted Aircraft Studies (CIRPAS) instrumented Twin Otter, equipped with a sampling tube collector, occurring between 18 July and 12 August 2016 below 1 km altitude off the central coast. The collector was flushed first with 70 ethanol, then with sterile DI water, between sampling regions. Collected volumes ranged from 100 L to 12 mL. All samples were diluted serially and plated on two different types of agar, nutrient-dense (PCA) and sparse (R-2A). Plates were incubated at room temperature and counted when colonies first appeared and again at 2 weeks.Preliminary results from seven flights are consistent with generally reported colony-forming unit (CFU) values for terrestrial fog water (e.g., [4]). The PCA assay ranged from 400 to 125,000 CFU/mL, R-2A from 700 to 130,000 CFU/mL. PCA and R-2A counts were not significantly different from each other at I^ plus or minus +/- 0.05, although observationally, the R2A plates had more pigmented colonies. CFU counts from the majority of flights were not different from each other in mean at the same level of significance, but about half differed in median, indicating differences in underlying distribution. These results validate the presence of viable microorganisms in coastal California fog at levels that should be easily detectable by our sampling system. The indicated distribution differences underscore the need for small-scale, long-term sampling surveys. Future planned work includes ion chromatography for limiting nutrients, ATP quantification, and qPCR for several microbial classes of interest.

Abstract: Early Christianity was profoundly shaped by its Jewish heritage. In order to understand the emergence of Christianity, we must consider the role of Jewish stories, texts, and ideas upon the worldviews and identities of the New Testament authors. Few narratives were so significant for Jewish self-understanding as the exodus story. Building on the allusive and narrative approaches proposed by scholars like Richard Hays and Tom Wright, this thesis investigates the role of the exodus story in shaping the worldviews and identities put forth the New Testament epistles (specifically 1 Corinthians, Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, 1 Peter, and Hebrews). Though the influence of the exodus differs somewhat across each of these texts, all draw on this potent Jewish metanarrative to frame the outlook and self-understanding of the church – they are an exodus people. Furthermore, we may observe that the way these Christians engaged with the exodus story was not entirely novel or different to the ways that the exodus featured in their Jewish background. This Jewish story served to distinguish Christianity from national Israel, while still promoting substantially Jewish worldviews and identities.

Abstract: Abstract GSK256066 is a selective phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor that can be given by inhalation, minimising the potential for side effects. We evaluated the effects of GSK256066 on airway responses to allergen challenge in mild asthmatics. Methods In a randomised, double blind, cross-over study, 24 steroid naive atopic asthmatics with both early (EAR) and late (LAR) responses to inhaled allergen received inhaled GSK256066 87.5 mcg once per day and placebo for 7 days, followed by allergen challenge. Methacholine reactivity was measured 24 h post-allergen. Plasma pharmacokinetics were measured. The primary endpoint was the effect on LAR. Results GSK256066 significantly reduced the LAR, attenuating the fall in minimum and weighted mean FEV1 by 26.2% (p = 0.007) and 34.3% (p = 0.005) respectively compared to placebo. GSK256066 significantly reduced the EAR, inhibiting the fall in minimum and weighted mean FEV1 by 40.9% (p = 0.014) and 57.2% (p = 0.014) respectively compared to placebo. There was no effect on pre-allergen FEV1 or methacholine reactivity post allergen. GSK256066 was well tolerated, with low systemic exposure; plasma levels were not measurable after 4 hours in the majority of subjects. Conclusions GSK256066 demonstrated a protective effect on the EAR and LAR. This is the first inhaled PDE4 inhibitor to show therapeutic potential in asthma. Abstract: Just as on the land or in the ocean, atmospheric regions may be more or less hospitable to life. The aerobiosphere, or collection of living things in Earth's atmosphere, is poorly understood due to the small number and ad hoc nature of samples studied. However, we know viable airborne microbes play important roles, such as providing cloud condensation nuclei. Knowing the distribution of such microorganisms and how their activity can alter water, carbon, and other geochemical cycles is key to developing criteria for planetary habitability, particularly for potential habitats with wet atmospheres but little stable surface water. Coastal California has regular, dense fog known to play a major transport role in the local ecosystem. In addition to the significant local (1 km) geographical variation in typical fog, previous studies have found that changes in height above surface of as little as a few meters can yield significant differences in typical concentrations, populations and residence times. Abstract: Marine stratocumulus clouds often become decoupled from the vertical layer immediately above the ocean surface. This study contrasts cloud chemical composition between coupled and decoupled marine stratocumulus clouds for dissolved nonwater substances. Cloud water and droplet residual particle composition were measured in clouds off the California coast during three airborne experiments in July-August of separate years (Eastern Pacific Emitted Aerosol Cloud Experiment 2011, Nucleation in California Experiment 2013, and Biological and Oceanic Atmospheric Study 2015). Decoupled clouds exhibited significantly lower air-equivalent mass concentrations in both cloud water and droplet residual particles, consistent with reduced cloud droplet number concentration and subcloud aerosol (D-p>100nm) number concentration, owing to detachment from surface sources. Nonrefractory submicrometer aerosol measurements show that coupled clouds exhibit higher sulfate mass fractions in droplet residual particles, owing to more abundant precursor emissions from the ocean and ships. Consequently, decoupled clouds exhibited higher mass fractions of organics, nitrate, and ammonium in droplet residual particles, owing to effects of long-range transport from more distant sources. Sodium and chloride dominated in terms of air-equivalent concentration in cloud water for coupled clouds, and their mass fractions and concentrations exceeded those in decoupled clouds. Conversely, with the exception of sea-salt constituents (e.g., Cl, Na, Mg, and K), cloud water mass fractions of all species examined were higher in decoupled clouds relative to coupled clouds. Satellite and Navy Aerosol Analysis and Prediction System-based reanalysis data are compared with each other, and the airborne data to conclude that limitations in resolving boundary layer processes in a global model prevent it from accurately quantifying observed differences between coupled and decoupled cloud composition.
