Abstract

Transitioning to electrified transport requires improvements in sustainability, energy density, power density, lifetime, and approved the cost of lithium-ion batteries, with significant opportunities remaining in the development of next-generation cathodes. This presents a highly complex, multiparameter optimization challenge, where developments in cathode chemical design and discovery, theoretical and experimental understanding, structural and morphological control, synthetic approaches, and cost reduction strategies can deliver performance enhancements required in the near- and longer-term. This multifaceted challenge requires an interdisciplinary approach to solve, which has seen the establishment of numerous academic and industrial consortia around the world to focus on cathode development. One such example is the Next Generation Lithium-ion Cathode Materials project, FutureCat, established by the UK’s Faraday Institution for electrochemical energy storage research in 2019, aimed at developing our understanding of existing and newly discovered cathode chemistries. Here, we present our perspective on persistent fundamental challenges, including protective coatings and additives to extend lifetime and improve interfacial ion transport, the design of existing and the discovery of new cathode materials where cation and cation-plus-anion redox-activity can be exploited to increase energy density, the application of earth-abundant elements that could ultimately reduce costs, and the delivery of new electrode topologies resistant to fracture which can extend battery lifetime

Several studies are conducted to analyze the microstructural evolution with the change in thickness of the superconducting [YBa.sub.2][Cu.sub.3][O.sub.7-x] films. The results show that the crystallinity of the films decreases with an increase in the thickness.

Abstract

A study investigated the impact of oxygen pressure on the properties of yttrium barium copper oxide films during pulsed laser deposition. It especially focused on the low power of the films. At the lowest oxygen pressures used in the study, a significant suppression of the critical temperature of the films was observed, with a corresponding increase in the c-axis lattice parameter. This finding is consistent with the introduction of some kind of disorder into the films. Experimental implications are also discussed.

Abstract

Raman spectroscopy was used to measure structural disorder in a series of YBCO thin films grown by e-beam co-evaporation. YBCO thin films' cation stoichiometry and growth temperature are vital in controlling the development of structural disorder in which better ordered films are produced during higher growth temperatures and higher Y fluxes. In films with lesser structural disorder, fewer spatial variation occurs.

Abstract

The influence of oxygen partial pressure on flux pinning in bulk and tape materials and on Pb doping has been examined in which a coulometric titration system was used to control oxygen partial pressure. A combination of isothermal and isobaric steps was also used to melt-process screen-printed (Bi,Pb)-2212 tapes. Results show an increase in the solubility of Pb with declining oxygen partial pressure.

Abstract

A systematic study of the effect of film deposition temperature on both the linear and nonlinear microwave response of high temperature superconductor (HTS) materials fabricated by pulsed-laser deposition was conducted. The objective was to make an initial effort at the simultaneous optimization of linear and nonlinear microwave properties of HTS thin films. Results indicate that the increase in defects resulting from film growth at lower deposition temperatures leads to a smaller low-temperature surface resistance.

Abstract

Research was conducted to determine the influence of strain and microstructure on magnetotransport in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) thin films. The experiment was performed by conducting a sequence of short anneals on LCMO films without changing the oxygen content and by calculating the substrate/film lattice misfit strain, film microstructure and nonuniform strain. Results demonstrate the importance of controlling microstructure for optimizing properties of colossal magnetoresistance films.

Abstract

Researchers measured resistivity and magnetization in samples of LaMnO3 in which differing annealing conditions had created La and Mn vacancies. The purpose of the study was to examine the role of vacancies in the magnetic and transport behavior of La1-zAzMnO3, in which A is a divalent ion. The study revealed that the vacancies have a significant effect on the physical properties of LaMnO3 materials. High concentrations of vacancies create highly disordered magnetic properties.

Abstract

Raman microscopy was employed in studying the oxygen content and structural defects of three high temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films grown at various temperatures. C-axis lattice parameter and x-ray peak intensity ratios reveal different levels of cation disorder in the films. The positions of the 115cm-1 and 500cm-1 Raman peaks were found to alter as a function of cation disorder, spatial position and oxygen.

Abstract

At the end of a rush lasting over half a century, in which CMOS technology has been experiencing a constant and breathtaking increase of device speed and density, Moore’s law is approaching the insurmountable barrier given by the ultimate atomic nature of matter. A major challenge for 21st century scientists is finding novel strategies, concepts and materials for replacing silicon-based CMOS semiconductor technologies and guaranteeing a continued and steady technological progress in next decades. Among the materials classes candidate to contribute to this momentous challenge, oxide films and heterostructures are a particularly appealing hunting ground. The vastity, intended in pure chemical terms, of this class of compounds, the complexity of their correlated behaviour, and the wealth of functional properties they display, has already made these systems the subject of choice, worldwide, of a strongly networked, dynamic and interdisciplinary research community. Oxide science and technology has been the target of a wide four-year project, named Towards Oxide-Based Electronics (TO-BE), that has been recently running in Europe and has involved as participants several hundred scientists from 29 EU countries. In this review and perspective paper, published as a final deliverable of the TO-BE Action, the opportunities of oxides as future electronic materials for Information and Communication Technologies ICT and Energy are discussed. The paper is organized as a set of contributions, all selected and ordered as individual building blocks of a wider general scheme. After a brief preface by the editors and an introductory contribution, two sections follow. The first is mainly devoted to providing a perspective on the latest theoretical and experimental methods that are employed to investigate oxides and to produce oxide-based films, heterostructures and devices. 34. Optimisation of pulsed laser deposited Ba1-xKxBiO3thin films with tunable superconducting properties by control of K doping level, x

Abstract

The mid-TCsuperconductor Ba1-XKXBiO3(BKBO) exhibits different superconducting mechanisms depending on x, in the range ∼ 0.35–0.65. The optimal doping for the highest TCis reported to be around x  = 0.4. To understand more about the dependence of the superconducting mechanism on x, high quality and reproducible epitaxial films with controlled x are needed. This has been challenging owing to the volatility of K and (to a lesser extent) Bi. In this work, we use pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with several novel process steps to achieve high-quality films in a reproducible way. These include a modified method for target preparation, a low NO2growth pressure, and precise positioning of substrates in the PLD plume. Optimum TCfilms (32 K onset) were grown from an x  = 0.4 target, i.e. with no excess K, as is normally used. Stable, higher K content films (made from an x = 0.45 target), were also grown. These x = 0.45 films had a lower TC(22.5 K onset), as expected for (K) overdoped films, with very high upper critical field, HC2(0 K), and irreversibility field, Hirr(0 K), values, from linear extrapolation, of ∼ 31.7 T and ∼ 28.8 T, respectively. The growth methodology demonstrated in this work is highly beneficial for fundamental mechanistic studies of this complex superconductor on which there is renewed interest, and where controlled compositions and crystalline quality are currently limited.

Abstract

Thick films of YBa2Cu3O7-x were fabricated using an ultrasonic mist pyrolysis system on rolled and single crystal silver substrates which were heated to 900 degrees C. Nitrogen carrier gas was also sprayed on nitrate solutions of the constituent cations. Through deposition, a highly c-axis aligned YBCO films were achieved while in-plane alignment was shown in films on (110) oriented single crystal silver.
