We examine a century of radial velocity, visual magnitude, and astrometric observations of the nearest red supergiant, Betelgeuse, in order to reexamine the century-old assertion that Betelgeuse might be a spectroscopic binary. These data reveal Betelgeuse varying stochastically over years and decades due to its boiling, convective envelope, periodically with a $ 5.78$~yr long secondary period, and quasi-periodically from pulsations with periods of several hundred days. We show that the long secondary period is consistent between astrometric and RV datasets, and argue that it indicates a low-mass companion to Betelgeuse, less than a solar mass, orbiting in a 2,110 day period at a separation of just over twice Betelgeuse's radius. The companion star would be nearly twenty times less massive and a million times fainter than Betelgeuse, with similar effective temperature, effectively hiding it in plain sight near one of the best-studied stars in the night sky. The astrometric data favor an edge-on binary with orbital plane aligned with Betelgeuse's measured spin axis. Tidal spin-orbit interaction drains angular momentum from the orbit and spins up Betelgeuse, explaining the spin--orbit alignment and Betelgeuse's anomalously rapid spin. The mid-infrared (MIR; $\lambda\simeq3 - 10\mu$m) bands offer a unique window into understanding accretion and its interplay with jet formation in Galactic black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs). Although extremely difficult to observe from the ground, the NEOWISE time domain survey offers an excellent data set to study MIR variability when combined with contemporaneous X-ray data from the MAXI all-sky survey over a $\approx15$ yr baseline. Using a new forced photometry pipeline for NEOWISE data, we present the first systematic study of BHXRB MIR variability in outburst. Analyzing a sample of 16 sources detected in NEOWISE, we show variability trends in the X-ray hardness and MIR spectral index wherein i) the MIR bands are typically dominated by jet emission during the hard states, constraining the electron power spectrum index to $p \approx 1-4$ in the optically thin regime and indicating emitting regions of a few tens of gravitational radii when evolving towards a flat spectrum, ii) the MIR luminosity ($L_{IR}$) scales as $L_{IR}\propto L_X^{0.82\pm0.12}$ with the $2-10$ keV X-ray luminosity ($L_X$) in the hard state, consistent with its origin in a jet, and iii) the thermal disk emission dominates the soft state as the jet switches off and dramatically suppresses ($\gtrsim 10\times$) the MIR emission into a inverted spectrum ($\alpha\approx -1$, where $F_\nu\propto\nu^{-\alpha}$). We highlight a population of `mini' BHXRB outbursts detected in NEOWISE (including two previously unreported episodes in MAXI J1828-249) but missed in MAXI due to their faint fluxes or source confusion, exhibiting MIR spectral indices suggestive of thermal emission from a large outer disk. While core-collapse supernovae (SNe) often show early and consistent signs of circumstellar (CSM) interaction, some exhibit delayed signatures due to interaction with distant material around the progenitor star. Here we present the discovery in NEOWISE data of WTP19aalnxx, a luminous mid-infrared (IR) transient in the outskirts of the galaxy KUG 0022-007 at $\approx 190$ Mpc. First detected in 2018, WTP19aalnxx reaches a peak absolute (Vega) magnitude of $\approx-22$ at $4.6 \, \mu$m in $\approx3$ yr, comparable to the most luminous interacting SNe. Archival data reveal a $\gtrsim 5\times$ fainter optical counterpart detected since 2015, while follow-up near-IR observations in 2022 reveal an extremely red ($Ks-W2 \approx 3.7$ mag) active transient. Deep optical spectroscopy confirm strong CSM interaction signatures via intermediate-width Balmer emission lines and coronal metal lines. Modeling the broadband spectral energy distribution, we estimate the presence of $\gtrsim 10^{-2}$ M$_\odot$ of warm dust, likely formed in the shock interaction region. Together with the lack of nebular Fe emission, we suggest that WTP19aalnxx is a missed, low (optical) luminosity SN in an emerging family of core-collapse SNe distinguished by their CSM-interaction-powered mid-IR emission that outshines the optical bands. Investigating the Zwicky Transient Facility sample of SNe in NEOWISE data, we find $17$ core-collapse SNe ($\gtrsim 3$% in a volume-limited sample) without early signs of CSM interaction that exhibit delayed IR brightening, suggestive of dense CSM shells at $\lesssim 10^{17}$cm. Atmospheric escape is thought to significantly influence the evolution of exoplanets, especially for sub-Jupiter planets on short orbital periods. Theoretical models predict that hydrodynamic escape could erode the atmospheres of such gaseous planets, leaving only a rocky core. Deriving atmospheric mass-loss rates from observations is necessary to check these predictions. One of the ways to obtain mass-loss rate estimates is to fit transit spectra of the 10830 {\AA} helium or UV metal lines with Parker wind models. We aim to provide the community with a tool that enables performing this type of analysis, and present sunbather, an open-source Python code to model escaping exoplanet atmospheres and their transit spectra. sunbather incorporates the Parker wind code p-winds and the photoionization code Cloudy, with the ability to calculate any currently known spectral tracer at an arbitrary atmospheric composition. With sunbather, we investigate how the atmospheric structure of a generic hot Neptune planet depends on the metallicity. We find that the mass-loss rate drops by roughly one order of magnitude as we increase the metallicity from solar to 50 times solar. Line cooling by metal species is important already for a solar composition, and more so at higher metallicity. We then demonstrate how sunbather can be used to interpret observations of spectral lines that form in the upper atmosphere. We fit the observed helium spectrum of the mini-Neptune TOI-2134 b and show how even for helium data, the inferred mass-loss rate depends on the metallicity by up to a factor of three., Comment: Accepted to A&A

Triple stellar systems allow us to study stellar processes that cannot be attained in binary stars. The evolutionary phases in which the stellar members undergo mass exchanges can alter the hierarchical layout of these systems. Yet, the lack of a self-consistent treatment of common-envelope (CE) in triple star-systems hinders the comprehensive understanding of their long-term fate. This letter examines the conditions predicted around binaries embedded within CEs using local 3D hydrodynamical simulations. We explore varying the initial binary separation, the flow Mach number, and the background stellar density gradients as informed by a wide array of CE conditions, including those invoked to explain the formation of the triple system hosting PSR J0337+1715. We find that the stellar density gradient governs the gaseous drag force, which determines the final configuration of the embedded binary. We observe a comparable net drag force on the center of mass but an overall reduction in the accretion rate of the binary compared to the single object case. We find that for most CE conditions, and in contrast to the uniform background density case, the binary orbital separation increases with time, softening the binary and preventing it from subsequently merging. We conclude that binaries spiraling within CEs become more vulnerable to be disrupted by tidal interactions. This can have profound implications on the final outcomes of triple star-systems.

Super-puffs are planets with exceptionally low densities ($\rho \lesssim 0.1$~g~cm$^{-3}$) and core masses ($M_c \lesssim 5 M_\oplus$). Many lower-mass ($M_p\lesssim10M_\oplus$) super-puffs are expected to be unstable to catastrophic mass loss via photoevaporation and/or boil-off, whereas the larger gravitational potentials of higher-mass ($M_p\gtrsim10M_\oplus$) super-puffs should make them more stable to these processes. We test this expectation by studying atmospheric loss in the warm, higher-mass super-puff TOI-1420b ($M = 25.1M_\oplus$, $R = 11.9R_\oplus$, $\rho = 0.08$~g~cm$^{-3}$, $T_\mathrm{eq} = 960$~K). We observed one full transit and one partial transit of this planet using the metastable helium filter on Palomar/WIRC and found that the helium transits were $0.671\pm0.079\%$ (8.5$\sigma$) deeper than the TESS transits, indicating an outflowing atmosphere. We modeled the excess helium absorption using a self-consistent 1D hydrodynamics code to constrain the thermal structure of the outflow given different assumptions for the stellar XUV spectrum. These calculations then informed a 3D simulation which provided a good match to the observations with a modest planetary mass-loss rate of $10^{10.82}$~g~s$^{-1}$ ($M_p/\dot{M}\approx70$~Gyr). Super-puffs with $M_p\gtrsim10M_\oplus$, like TOI-1420b and WASP-107b, appear perfectly capable of retaining atmospheres over long timescales; therefore, these planets may have formed with the unusually large envelope mass fractions they appear to possess today. A notable fraction of helium observations probing the evaporating atmospheres of short-period gas giants at 1083~nm exhibit a blueshift during transit, which might be indicative of a day-to-night side flow. In this study, we explore the gas dynamic effects of day-to-night temperature contrasts on the escaping atmosphere of a tidally locked planet. Using a combination of 3D hydrodynamic simulations and radiative transfer post-processing, we modeled the transmission spectra of the metastable helium triplet. Our key findings are as follows: (1) Increasing the day-night anisotropy leads to a narrowing of the helium line and an increase in the blueshift of the line centroid of a few km~s$^{-1}$. (2) The velocity shift of the line depends on the line-forming altitude, with higher planetary mass-loss rates causing the line to form at higher altitudes, resulting in a more pronounced velocity shift. (3) A critical point of day-night anisotropy comes about when the blueshift saturates, due to turbulent flows generated by outflow material falling back onto the planet's night side. (4) A strong stellar wind and the presence of turbulent flows may induce time variations in the velocity shift. Assuming that the day-night temperature gradient is the main cause of the observed blueshifts in the He-1083~nm triplet, the correlation between the velocity shift and day-night anisotropy provides an opportunity to constrain the temperature gradient of the line-forming region., Comment: Accepted and to be published in A&A. A supermassive black hole (SMBH) surrounded by a dense, nuclear star cluster resides at the center of many galaxies. In this dense environment, high-velocity collisions frequently occur between stars. About $10 \%$ of the stars within the Milky Way's nuclear star cluster collide with other stars before evolving off the main-sequence. Collisions preferentially affect tightly-bound stars, which orbit most quickly and pass through regions of the highest stellar density. Over time, collisions therefore shape the bulk properties of the nuclear star cluster. We examine the effect of collisions on the cluster's stellar density profile. We show that collisions produce a turning point in the density profile which can be determined analytically. Varying the initial density profile and collision model, we characterize the evolution of the stellar density profile over $10$ Gyr. We find that old, initially cuspy populations exhibit a break around $0.1$ pc in their density profile, while shallow density profiles retain their initial shape outside of $0.01$ pc. The initial density profile is always preserved outside of a few tenths of parsec irrespective of initial conditions. Low-mass stars appear to frequently host planetary systems. When these rocky planets develop high eccentricities as a result of secular torques or dynamical scatterings, they occasionally pass close to the host star. In these close passages, planets can be tidally disrupted, and sheared into bound and unbound debris tails. To suffer such a disruption the stellar density must by higher than the planetary density. This condition is met for the most common star and planet systems, M-dwarf stars hosting rocky planets. We describe the dynamics of a tidal disruption, and estimate the typical velocities of unbound ejecta. We simulate the gas dynamics of a planetary tidal disruption, and show that disruptions preserve the layered structure of a rocky body, with the outermost layers flung into interstellar space with the highest velocities. We compare these properties to that of the candidate interstellar meteoroid CNEOS-2014-01-08 (IM1). IM1's approximately 60~km~s$^{-1}$ excess speed relative to the local standard of rest is naturally reproduced by the unbound debris of the disruption of an Earth-like planet around an M-dwarf star. We suggest that such an encounter might explain the interstellar kinematics of IM1, and its unusual composition, especially if it originated in the fastest-expelled crust of a differentiated rocky planet. We use the rapid binary population synthesis code COMPAS to investigate commonly used prescriptions for the determination of mass transfer stability in close binaries and the orbital separations after stable mass transfer. The degree of orbital tightening during non-conservative mass transfer episodes is governed by the poorly-constrained angular momentum carried away by the ejected material. Increased orbital tightening drives systems towards unstable mass transfer leading to a common envelope. We find that the fraction of interacting binaries that will undergo only stable mass transfer throughout their lives fluctuates between a few and $\sim 20\%$ due to uncertainty in the angular momentum loss alone. If mass transfer is significantly non-conservative, stability prescriptions that rely on the assumption of conservative mass transfer under-predict the number of systems which experience unstable mass transfer and stellar mergers. This may substantially impact predictions about the rates of various transients, including luminous red novae, stripped-envelope supernovae, X-ray binaries, and the progenitors of coalescing compact binaries., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Atmospheric escape shapes the fate of exoplanets, with statistical evidence for transformative mass loss imprinted across the mass-radius-insolation distribution. Here we present transit spectroscopy of the highly irradiated, low-gravity, inflated hot Saturn HAT-P-67 b. The Habitable Zone Planet Finder (HPF) spectra show a detection of up to 10% absorption depth of the 10833 Angstrom Helium triplet. The 13.8 hours of on-sky integration time over 39 nights sample the entire planet orbit, uncovering excess Helium absorption preceding the transit by up to 130 planetary radii in a large leading tail. This configuration can be understood as the escaping material overflowing its small Roche lobe and advecting most of the gas into the stellar -- and not planetary -- rest frame, consistent with the Doppler velocity structure seen in the Helium line profiles. The prominent leading tail serves as direct evidence for dayside mass loss with a strong day-/night- side asymmetry. We see some transit-to-transit variability in the line profile, consistent with the interplay of stellar and planetary winds. We employ 1D Parker wind models to estimate the mass loss rate, finding values on the order of $2\times10^{13}$ g/s, with large uncertainties owing to the unknown XUV flux of the F host star. The large mass loss in HAT-P-67 b represents a valuable example of an inflated hot Saturn, a class of planets recently identified to be rare as their atmospheres are predicted to evaporate quickly. Capturing planets in the act of losing their atmospheres provides rare opportunities to probe their evolution history. Such analysis has been enabled by observations of the helium triplet at 10833 \AA, but past studies have focused on the narrow time window right around the planet's optical transit. We monitored the hot Jupiter HAT-P-32 b using high-resolution spectroscopy from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope covering the planet's full orbit. We detected helium escaping HAT-P-32 b at a $14\sigma$ significance, with extended leading and trailing tails spanning a projected length over 53 times the planet's radius. These tails are among the largest known structures associated with an exoplanet. We interpret our observations using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, which predict Roche Lobe overflow with extended tails along the planet's orbital path., Comment: Accepted by Science Advances

Betelgeuse, the nearest red supergiant, dimmed to an unprecedented level in early 2020. The star emerged from this Great Dimming episode with its typical, roughly 400-day pulsation cycle halved, and a new dominant period of around 200 days. The dimming event has been attributed to a surface mass ejection, in which rising material drove shocks through the stellar atmosphere and expelled some material, partially obscuring the star as it formed molecules and dust. In this paper, we use hydrodynamic simulations to reveal the connections between Betelgeuse's vigorously convective envelope, the surface mass ejection, and the pulsation mode switching that ensued. An anomalously hot convective plume, generated rarely but naturally in the star's turbulent envelope, can rise and break free from the surface, powering an upwelling that becomes the surface mass ejection. The rising plume also breaks the phase coherence of the star's pulsation, causing the surface to keep expanding even as the deeper layers contract. This drives a switch from the 400-day fundamental mode of pulsation, in which the whole star expands and contracts synchronously, to the 200-day first overtone, where a radial node separates the interior and exterior of the envelope moving in opposite phase. We predict that the star's convective motions will damp the overtone oscillation and Betelgeuse will return to its previous, 400-day fundamental mode pulsation in the next 5-10 years. Stellar-mass black holes (BHs), with masses comparable to stars, are a major constituent of our Milky Way galaxy. This chapter describes the landscape of challenging, and long-sought efforts to identify these objects in the Galaxy. The first stellar-mass BHs were identified as persistent, but highly variable cosmic X-ray sources. Later, transient BH candidates were detected, and now far outnumber the persistent sources. Decades of effort have also yielded candidate BHs via gravitational microlensing and their orbital effect on binary companions. Populations of BH systems have begun to emerge from these detection strategies, offering insight into the astrophysical context in which BHs exist and driving questions about the formation, assembly, and ongoing evolution of these enigmatic objects., Comment: This chapter is the pre-print of the version currently in production. Transit and radial-velocity surveys over the past two decades have uncovered a significant population of short-period exoplanets. Among them are hot Jupiters, which are gas giant planets with orbital periods of a few days and found in 0.1-1% of Sun-like stars. Hot Jupiters are expected to be engulfed during their host star's radial expansion on the red giant branch. Planetary engulfment has been studied extensively as it may account for observed rapidly rotating and chemically enriched giant stars. We perform 3D hydrodynamical simulations of hot Jupiter engulfment by a 1 solar mass, 4 solar radii early red giant. Our "global" simulations simultaneously resolve the stellar envelope and planetary structure, modelling the hot Jupiter as a polytropic gas sphere. We find that approximately 90% of the hot Jupiter's mass is ablated in the convective part of the giant envelope, which would enhance the surface lithium abundance by 0.1 dex. The hot Jupiter is disrupted by a combination of ram pressure and tidal forces near the base of the convective envelope, with the deepest material penetrating to the radiative zone. The star experiences modest spin-up (~1 km/s), although engulfing a more massive companion could produce a rapidly rotating giant. Drag heating near the surface could exceed the unperturbed stellar luminosity and power an optical transient. For the amount of unbound ejecta recorded in the simulation, H-recombination could also power a transient that is around ten times the pre-engulfment luminosity, for several days., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Models of exoplanet atmospheres based on Parker-wind density and velocity profiles are a common choice in fitting spectroscopic observations tracing planetary atmospheric escape. Inferring atmospheric properties using these models often results in a degeneracy between the temperature and the mass-loss rate, and thus provides weak constraints on either parameter. We present a framework that can partially resolve this degeneracy by placing more stringent constraints on the expected thermospheric temperature. We use the photoionization code Cloudy within an iterative scheme to compute the temperature structure of a grid of 1D Parker wind models, including the effects of radiative heating/cooling, as well as the hydrodynamic effects (expansion cooling and heat advection). We constrain the parameter space by identifying models that are not self-consistent through a comparison of the simulated temperature in the He 10830 $\r{A}$ line-forming region to the temperature assumed in creating the models. We demonstrate this procedure on models based on HD 209458 b. By investigating the Parker wind models with an assumed temperature between 4000 and 12000 K, and a mass-loss rate between $10^{8}$ and $10^{11}$ g s$^{-1}$, we are able to rule out a large portion of this parameter space. Furthermore, we fit the models to previous observational data and combine both constraints to find a preferred thermospheric temperature of $T=8200^{+1200}_{-1100}$ K and a mass-loss rate of $\dot{M}=10^{9.84^{+0.24}_{-0.27}}$ g s$^{-1}$ assuming a fixed atmospheric composition and no gas pressure confinement by the stellar wind. We present the detection of neutral helium at 10833A in the atmosphere of WASP-52b and tentative evidence of helium in the atmosphere of the grazing WASP-177b, using high-resolution observations acquired with the NIRSPEC instrument on the Keck II telescope. We detect excess absorption by helium in WASP-52b's atmosphere of $3.44 \pm 0.31$% ($11\sigma$), or equivalently $66 \pm 5$ atmospheric scale heights. This absorption is centered on the planet's rest frame ($\Delta v = 0.00 \pm 1.19$km s$^{-1}$). We model the planet's escape using a 1D Parker wind model and calculate its mass-loss rate to be $\sim 1.4 \times 10^{11}$g s$^{-1}$, or equivalently 0.5% of its mass per Gyr. For WASP-177b, we see evidence for red-shifted ($\Delta v = 6.02 +/- 1.88$km s$^{-1}$) helium-like absorption of $1.28 \pm 0.29$% (equal to $23 \pm 5$ atmospheric scale heights). However, due to residual systematics in the transmission spectrum of similar amplitude, we do not interpret this as significant evidence for He absorption in the planet's atmosphere. Using a 1D Parker wind model, we set a $3\sigma$ upper limit on WASP-177b's escape rate of $7.9 \times 10^{10}$ g s$^{-1}$. Our results, taken together with recent literature detections, suggest the tentative relation between XUV irradiation and He I absorption amplitude may be shallower than previously suggested. We discuss the central role that dust condensation plays in shaping the observational appearance of outflows from coalescing binary systems. As binaries begin to coalesce, they shock-heat and expel material into their surroundings. Depending on the properties of the merging system, this material can expand to the point where molecules and dust form, dramatically increasing the gas opacity. We use the existing population of Luminous Red Novae (LRNe) to constrain the thermodynamics of these ejecta, then apply our findings to the progressive obscuration of merging systems in the lead in to their coalescence. Compact progenitor stars near the main sequence or in the Hertzsprung gap along with massive progenitor stars have sufficiently hot circumstellar material to remain unobscured by dust. By contrast, more extended, low-mass giants should become completely optically obscured by dust formation in the circumbinary environment. We predict that 30--50\% of stellar coalescence transients for solar-mass stars will be dusty, infrared-luminous sources. The detection of the binary black hole merger GW190521, with primary black hole mass $85^{+21}_{-14}$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}$, proved the existence of black holes in the theoretically predicted pair-instability gap ($\sim60-120 \, {\rm M}_{\odot}$) of their mass spectrum. Some recent studies suggest that such massive black holes could be produced by the collision of an evolved star with a carbon-oxygen core and a main sequence star. Such a post-coalescence star could end its life avoiding the pair-instability regime and with a direct collapse of its very massive envelope. It is still not clear, however, how the collision shapes the structure of the newly produced star and how much mass is actually lost in the impact. We investigated this issue by means of hydrodynamical simulations with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics code {\sc StarSmasher}, finding that a head-on collision can remove up to 12\% of the initial mass of the colliding stars. This is a non-negligible percentage of the initial mass and could affect the further evolution of the stellar remnant, particularly in terms of the final mass of a possibly forming black hole. We also found that the main sequence star can plunge down to the outer boundary of the core of the primary, changing the inner chemical composition of the remnant. The collision expels the outer layers of the primary, leaving a remnant with an helium-enriched envelope (reaching He fractions of about 0.4 at the surface). The engulfment of substellar bodies (SBs, such as brown dwarfs and planets) by giant stars is a possible explanation for rapidly rotating giants, lithium-rich giants, and the presence of SBs in close orbits around subdwarfs and white dwarfs. We simulate the flow in the vicinity of an engulfed SB in three-dimensional hydrodynamics. We model the SB as a rigid body with a reflective surface because it cannot accrete. This reflective boundary changes the flow morphology to resemble that of engulfed compact objects with outflows. We measure the drag coefficients for the ram pressure and gravitational drag forces acting on the SB, and use them to integrate its trajectory inside the star. We find that engulfment can increase the luminosity of a $1M_\odot$ star by up to a few orders of magnitude. The time for the star to return to its original luminosity is up to a few thousand years when the star has evolved to $\approx10R_\odot$ and up to a few decades at the tip of the red giant branch. No SBs can eject the envelope of a $1M_\odot$ star before it evolves to $\approx10R_\odot$, if the orbit of the SB is the only energy source contributing to the ejection. In contrast, SBs as small as $\approx10M_\text{Jup}$ can eject the envelope at the tip of the red giant branch. The evolution of many close binary and multiple star systems is defined by phases of mass exchange and interaction. As these systems evolve into contact, tidal dissipation is not always sufficient to bring them into circular, synchronous orbits. In these cases, encounters of increasing strength occur while the orbit remains eccentric. This paper focuses on the outcomes of close tidal passages in eccentric orbits. Close eccentric passages excite dynamical oscillations about the stars' equilibrium configurations. These tidal oscillations arise from the transfer of orbital energy into oscillation mode energy. When these oscillations reach sufficient amplitude, they break near the stellar surface. The surface wave-breaking layer forms a shock-heated atmosphere that surrounds the object. The continuing oscillations in the star's interior launch shocks that dissipate into the this atmosphere, damping the tidal oscillations. We show that the rapid, nonlinear dissipation associated with the wave breaking of fundamental oscillation modes therefore comes with coupled mass loss to the wave breaking atmosphere. The mass ratio is an important characteristic that defines the relative importance of mass loss and energy dissipation and therefore determines the fate of systems evolving under the influence of nonlinear dissipation. We analyse how drag forces modify the orbits of objects moving through extended gaseous distributions. We consider how hydrodynamic (surface area) drag forces and dynamical friction (gravitational) drag forces drive the evolution of orbital eccentricity. While hydrodynamic drag forces cause eccentric orbits to become more circular, dynamical friction drag can cause orbits to become more eccentric. We develop a semi-analytic model that accurately predicts these changes by comparing the total work and torque applied to the orbit at periapse and apoapse. We use a toy model of a radial power-law density profile, $\rho \propto r^{-\gamma}$, to determine that there is a critical $\gamma = 3$ power index which separates the eccentricity evolution in dynamical friction: orbits become more eccentric for $\gamma < 3$ and circularize for $\gamma > 3$. We apply these findings to the infall of a Jupiter-like planet into the envelope of its host star. The hydrostatic envelopes of stars are defined by steep density gradients near the limb and shallower gradients in the interior. Under the influence of gaseous dynamical friction, an infalling object's orbit will first decrease in eccentricity, then increase. The critical separation that delineates these regimes is predicted by the local density slope and is linearly dependent on polytropic index. More broadly, our findings indicate that binary systems may routinely emerge from common envelope phases with non-zero eccentricities that were excited by the dynamical friction forces that drove their orbital tightening., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Interacting binaries are of general interest as laboratories for investigating the physics of accretion, which gives rise to the bulk of high-energy radiation in the Galaxy. They allow us to probe stellar evolution processes that cannot be studied in single stars. Understanding the orbital evolution of binaries is essential in order to model the formation of compact binaries. Here we focus our attention on studying orbital evolution driven by angular momentum loss through stellar winds in massive binaries. We run a suite of hydrodynamical simulations of binary stars hosting one mass losing star with varying wind velocity, mass ratio, wind velocity profile and adiabatic index, and compare our results to analytic estimates for drag and angular momentum loss. We find that, at leading order, orbital evolution is determined by the wind velocity and the binary mass ratio. Small ratios of wind to orbital velocities and large accreting companion masses result in high angular momentum loss and a shrinking of the orbit. For wider binaries and binaries hosting lighter mass-capturing companions, the wind mass-loss becomes more symmetric, which results in a widening of the orbit. We present a simple analytic formula that can accurately account for angular momentum losses and changes in the orbit, which depends on the wind velocity and mass ratio. Atmospheric escape from close-in exoplanets is thought to be crucial in shaping observed planetary populations. Recently, significant progress has been made in observing this process in action through excess absorption in transit spectra and narrowband light curves. We model the escape of initially-homogeneous planetary winds interacting with a stellar wind. The ram pressure balance of the two winds governs this interaction. When the impingement of the stellar wind on the planetary outflow is mild or moderate, the planetary outflow expands nearly spherically through its sonic surface before forming a shocked boundary layer. When the confinement is strong, the planetary outflow is redirected into a cometary tail before it expands to its sonic radius. The resultant transmission spectra at the He 1083 nm line are accurately represented by a 1D spherical wind solution in cases of mild to moderate stellar wind interaction. In cases of strong stellar wind interaction, the degree of absorption is enhanced and the cometary tail leads to an extended egress from transit. The crucial features of the wind--wind interaction are, therefore, encapsulated in the light curve of He 1083 nm equivalent width as a function of time. The possibility of extended He 1083 nm absorption well beyond the optical transit carries important implications for planning "out-of-transit" observations that serve as a baseline for in-transit data., Comment: Accepted for publication in AAS Journals. Tidal dissipation due to turbulent viscosity in the convective regions of giant stars plays an important role in shaping the orbits of pre-common envelope systems. Such systems are possible sources of transients and close compact binary systems that will eventually merge and produce detectable gravitational wave signals. Most previous studies of the onset of common envelope episodes have focused on circular orbits and synchronously rotating donor stars under the assumption that tidal dissipation can quickly spin up the primary and circularize the orbit before the binary reaches Roche-lobe overflow (RLO). We test this assumption by coupling numerical models of the post main sequence stellar evolution of massive-stars with the model for tidal dissipation in convective envelopes developed in Vick & Lai (2020) $-$ a tidal model that is accurate even for highly eccentric orbits with small pericentre distances. We find that, in many cases, tidal dissipation does not circularize the orbit before RLO. For a $10~M_\odot$ ($15~M_\odot$) primary star interacting with a $1.4~M_\odot$ companion, systems with pericentre distances within 3 AU (6 AU) when the primary leaves the main sequence will retain the initial orbital eccentricity when the primary grows to the Roche radius. Even in systems that tidally circularize before RLO, the donor star may be rotating subsynchronously at the onset of mass transfer. Our results demonstrate that some possible precursors to double neutron star systems are likely eccentric at the Roche radius. Stellar winds shape the evolution of stars through the loss of mass. In binary systems, they also shape the stars' evolution by modifying the orbit. In this paper, we use hydrodynamic simulations to study the emergence of nearly-isothermal winds from identical-twin binaries. We vary the degree to which model stars fill their Roche lobes and the temperature of the wind. Initialized at rest on the stellar surfaces, winds accelerate away from the binary components through a sonic surface to supersonic outward velocities. In cases where the binary fills its Roche lobe, a shared subsonic region surrounds both components. We find that mass loss rates from close twin-star binaries are enhanced relative to the expectation from two single-object winds. This binary enhancement is best modeled as a function of the ratio of wind velocity to orbital velocity. Similarly, we find that the specific angular momentum with which winds emerge can vary between that of the binary components and that of the outer Lagrange points depending on the ratio of wind velocity to orbital velocity. Given that mass and angular momentum loss can be modeled as simple functions of wind velocity, our results may be broadly applicable to the evolution of close, equal-mass binaries. Common envelope evolution, the key orbital tightening phase of the traditional formation channel for close binaries, is a multistage process that presents many challenges to the establishment of a fully descriptive, predictive theoretical framework. In an approach complementary to global 3D hydrodynamical modeling, we explore the range of applicability for a simplified drag formalism that incorporates the results of local hydrodynamic "wind tunnel" simulations into a semi-analytical framework in the treatment of the common envelope dynamical inspiral phase using a library of realistic giant branch stellar models across the low, intermediate, and high mass regimes. In terms of a small number of key dimensionless parameters, we characterize a wide range of common envelope events, revealing the broad range of applicability of the drag formalism as well its self-similar nature across mass regimes and ages. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are among the brightest transients in the optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray sky. These flares are set into motion when a star is torn apart by the tidal field of a massive black hole, triggering a chain of events which is -- so far -- incompletely understood. However, the disruption process has been studied extensively for almost half a century, and unlike the later stages of a TDE, our understanding of the disruption itself is reasonably well converged. In this Chapter, we review both analytical and numerical models for stellar tidal disruption. Starting with relatively simple, order-of-magnitude physics, we review models of increasing sophistication, the semi-analytic ``affine formalism,'' hydrodynamic simulations of the disruption of polytropic stars, and the most recent hydrodynamic results concerning the disruption of realistic stellar models. Our review surveys the immediate aftermath of disruption in both typical and more unusual TDEs, exploring how the fate of the tidal debris changes if one considers non-main sequence stars, deeply penetrating tidal encounters, binary star systems, and sub-parabolic orbits. White dwarf stars that enter the tidal radius of black holes with masses $\lesssim$ $10^5$ M$_{\odot}$ are doomed to be ripped apart by tidal forces. Black holes in this mass range between stellar black holes and supermassive black holes have not been conclusively identified so the detection of a tidal disruption of a white dwarf would provide clear evidence for the existence of intermediate-mass black holes. In this review, we present a theoretical and observational overview of the transient events that result from the tidal disruptions of white dwarfs by intermediate-mass black holes. Binary systems undergoing unstable Roche Lobe overflow spill gas into their circumbinary environment as their orbits decay toward coalescence. In this paper, we use a suite of hydrodynamic models of coalescing binaries involving an extended donor and a more compact accretor. We focus on the period of unstable Roche Lobe overflow that ends as the accretor plunges within the envelope of the donor at the onset of a common envelope phase. During this stage, mass is removed from the donor and flung into the circumbinary environment. Across a wide range of binary mass ratios, we find that the mass expelled as the separation decreases from the Roche limit to the donor's original radius is of the order of 25% of the accretor's mass. We study the kinematics of this ejecta and its dependencies on binary properties and find that it assembles into a toroidal circumbinary distribution. These circumbinary tori have approximately constant specific angular momentum due to momentum transport by spiral shocks launched from the orbiting binary. We show that an analytic model with these torus properties captures many of the main features of the azimuthally-averaged profiles of our hydrodynamic simulations. Our results, in particular the simple relationship between accretor mass and expelled mass and its spatial distribution, may be useful in interpreting stellar coalescence transients like luminous red novae, and in initializing hydrodynamic simulations of the subsequent common envelope phase., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, Volume 895, Issue 1, id.29. Planetary engulfment events have long been proposed as a lithium (Li) enrichment mechanism contributing to the population of Li-rich giants (A(Li) >= 1.5 dex). Using MESA stellar models and A(Li) abundance measurements obtained by the GALAH survey, we calculate the strength and observability of the surface Li enrichment signature produced by the engulfment of a hot Jupiter (HJ). We consider solar-metallicity stars in the mass range of 1-2 $\mathrm{M_\odot}$ and the Li supplied by a HJ of 1.0 $\mathrm{M_J}$. We explore engulfment events that occur near the main sequence turn-off (MSTO) and out to orbital separations of 0.1 AU. We map our results onto the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram, revealing the statistical significance and survival time of lithium enrichment. We identify the parameter space of masses and evolutionary phases where the engulfment of a HJ can lead to Li enrichment signatures at a $5\sigma$ confidence level and with meteoritic abundance strengths. The most compelling strengths and survival times of engulfment-derived Li enrichment are found among host stars of 1.4 $\mathrm{M_\odot}$ near the MSTO. Our calculations indicate that planetary engulfment is not a viable enrichment pathway for stars that have evolved beyond the subgiant branch. For these sources, observed Li enhancements are likely to be produced by other mechanisms, such as the Cameron-Fowler process or the accretion of material from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion. Close double neutron stars have been observed as Galactic radio pulsars, while their mergers have been detected as gamma-ray bursts and gravitational-wave sources. They are believed to have experienced at least one common-envelope episode during their evolution prior to double neutron star formation. In the last decades there have been numerous efforts to understand the details of the common-envelope phase, but its computational modelling remains challenging. We present and discuss the properties of the donor and the binary at the onset of the Roche-lobe overflow leading to these common-envelope episodes as predicted by rapid binary population synthesis models. These properties can be used as initial conditions for detailed simulations of the common-envelope phase. There are three distinctive populations, classified by the evolutionary stage of the donor at the moment of the onset of the Roche-lobe overflow: giant donors with fully-convective envelopes, cool donors with partially-convective envelopes, and hot donors with radiative envelopes. We also estimate that, for standard assumptions, tides would not circularise a large fraction of these systems by the onset of Roche-lobe overflow. In Kawahara et al. (2018) and Masuda et al. (2019), we reported the discovery of four self-lensing binaries consisting of F/G-type stars and (most likely) white dwarfs whose masses range from 0.2 to 0.6 solar masses. Here we present their updated system parameters based on new radial velocity data from the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory, and the Gaia parallaxes and spectroscopic parameters of the primary stars. We study the process of runaway, unstable Roche lobe overflow in coalescing binary systems and its dependence on the properties of the binary involved. We create three-dimensional hydrodynamic models of binary coalescences, and follow them through a phase of increasing Roche lobe overflow until the accretor is engulfed by the donor at the onset of a common envelope phase. In these models, we vary binary properties of mass ratio, donor structure and spin, and equation of state through the gas adiabatic index. We compare the numerical results to semi-analytic models of binary orbit evolution based on mass and angular momentum exchange between two point masses. Using our hydrodynamic simulations, we measure the key parameters: the donor mass loss rate and the angular momentum exchanged per unit mass loss from the donor. Using these calibrations, the semi-analytic model closely reproduces the escalating mass loss and runaway orbital decay observed in the hydrodynamic models. The semi-analytic model accurately reproduces the major differences in orbit evolution that arise with varying mass ratio and donor structure. We encapsulate the semi-analytic model in a publicly-released python package RLOF. We apply this model to the observed period decay and subsequent merger of the binary V1309 Sco, and find that it can simultaneously reproduce the observed orbital decay and time of outburst. We present three-dimensional local hydrodynamic simulations of flows around objects embedded within stellar envelopes using a "wind tunnel" formalism. Our simulations model the common envelope dynamical inspiral phase in binary star systems in terms of dimensionless flow characteristics. We present suites of simulations that study the effects of varying the binary mass ratio, stellar structure, equation of state, relative Mach number of the object's motion through the gas, and density gradients across the gravitational focusing scale. For each model, we measure coefficients of accretion and drag experienced by the embedded object. These coefficients regulate the coupled evolution of the object's masses and orbital tightening during the dynamical inspiral phase of the common envelope. We extrapolate our simulation results to accreting black holes with masses comparable to that of the population of LIGO black holes. We demonstrate that the mass and spin accrued by these black holes per unit orbital tightening are directly related to the ratio of accretion to drag coefficients. We thus infer that the mass and dimensionless spin of initially non-rotating black holes change by of order $1\%$ and 0.05, respectively, in a typical example scenario. Our prediction that the masses and spins of black holes remain largely unmodified by a common envelope phase aids in the interpretation of the properties of the growing observed population of merging binary black holes. Galactic center black holes appear to be nearly universally surrounded by dense stellar clusters. When these black holes go through an active accretion phase, the multiple components of the accretion disk, stellar cluster, and black hole system all coexist. We analyze the effect of drag forces on highly eccentric stellar orbits incurred as stars puncture through the disk plane. Disk crossings dissipate orbital energy, drawing eccentric stars into more circular orbits. For high surface density disks, such as those found around black holes accreting near the Eddington mass accretion limit, the magnitude of this energy dissipation can be larger than the mean scatterings that stars receive by two body relaxation. One implication of this is the presence of a disk "loss cone" for highly eccentric stellar orbits where the dissipation from disk interaction outweighs scatter via two body relaxation. The disk loss cone is larger than the tidal disruption loss cone for near-Eddington black hole accretion rates. Stellar orbits within the disk loss cone are lost from the overall cluster as stellar orbits are circularized and stars are potentially ablated by their high-velocity impacts with the disk. We find, however, that the presence of the disk loss cone has a minimal effect on the overall rate of stellar tidal disruptions. Stars are still efficiently fed to the black hole from more-distant stellar orbits that receive large-enough per orbit scatter to jump over the disk loss cone and end up tidally disrupted., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journals; comments are welcome. We report the discovery of the fifth self-lensing binary in which a low-mass white dwarf (WD) gravitationally magnifies its 15th magnitude G-star companion, KIC 8145411, during eclipses. The system was identified from a pair of such self-lensing events in the Kepler photometry, and was followed up with the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph (TRES) on the 1.5m telescope at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory and the High-Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS) on the Subaru 8.2m telescope. A joint analysis of the TRES radial velocities, the HDS spectrum, and the Kepler photometry of the primary star determines the WD mass $0.20\pm0.01\,M_\odot$, orbital semi-major axis $1.28\pm0.03\,\mathrm{au}$, and orbital eccentricity $0.14\pm0.02$. Because such extremely low-mass WDs cannot be formed in isolation within the age of the Galaxy, their formation is believed to involve binary interactions that truncated evolution of the WD progenitor. However, the observed orbit of the KIC 8145411 system is at least ten times wider than required for this scenario to work. The presence of this system in the Kepler sample, along with its similarities to field blue straggler binaries presumably containing WDs, may suggest that some 10% of post-AGB binaries with Sun-like primaries contain such anomalous WDs., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We model explosions driven by the coalescence of a black hole or neutron star with the core of its massive-star companion. Upon entering a common envelope phase, a compact object may spiral all the way to the core. The concurrent release of energy is likely to be deposited into the surrounding common envelope, powering a merger-driven explosion. We use hydrodynamic models of binary coalescence to model the common envelope density distribution at the time of coalescence. We find toroidal profiles of material, concentrated in the binary's equatorial plane and extending to many times the massive star's original radius. We use the spherically-averaged properties of this circumstellar material (CSM) to estimate the emergent light curves that result from the interaction between the blast wave and the CSM. We find that typical merger-driven explosions are brightened by up to three magnitudes by CSM interaction. From population synthesis models we discover that the brightest merger-driven explosions, $M_V \sim -18$ to $-19$, are those involving black holes because they have the most massive and extended CSM. Black hole coalescence events are also common; they represent about 50% of all merger-driven explosions and approximately 0.3% of the core-collapse rate. The level of mass segregation in the core of globular clusters has been previously proposed as a potential indicator of the dynamical constituents of the system, such as presence of a significant population of stellar-mass black holes (BHs), or even a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). However, its measurement is limited to clusters with high-quality Hubble Space Telescope data. Thanks to a set of state-of-the-art direct N-body simulations with up to 200k particles inclusive of stellar evolution, primordial binaries, and varying BH/neutron stars, we highlight for the first time the existence of a clear and tight linear relation between the degree of mass segregation and the cluster structural concentration index. The latter is defined as the ratio of the radii containing 5% and 50% of the integrated light ($R_5/R_\mathrm{50}$), making it robustly measurable without the need to individually resolve low-mass stars. Our simulations indicate that given $R_5/R_\mathrm{50}$, the mass segregation $\Delta m$ (defined as the difference in main sequence median mass between center and half-light radius) is expressed as $\Delta m/M_\odot = -1.166 R_5/R_\mathrm{h} + 0.3246$, with a root-mean-square error of $0.0148$. In addition, we can explain its physical origin and the values of the fitted parameters through basic analytical modeling. Such correlation is remarkably robust against a variety of initial conditions (including presence of primordial binaries and IMBHs) and cluster ages, with a slight dependence in best-fit parameters on the prescriptions used to measure the quantities involved. The tidal disruption of stars by (super-)massive black holes in galactic nuclei has been discussed in theoretical terms for about 30 years but only in the past decade have we been able to detect such events in substantial numbers. Thus, we are now starting to carry out observational tests of models for the disruption. We are also formulating expectations for the inspiral and disruption of white dwarfs by intermediate-mass black holes with masses $< 10^5\;{\rm M}_\odot$. Such events are very rich with information and open a new window to intermediate-mass black holes, thought to live in dwarf galaxies and star clusters. They can inform us of the demographics of intermediate-mass black holes, stellar populations and dynamics in their immediate vicinity, and the physics of accretion of hydrogen-deficient material. The combination of upcoming transient surveys using ground-based, electromagnetic observatories and low-frequency gravitational wave observations is ideal for exploiting tidal disruptions of white dwarfs. The detection rate of gravitational wave signals, optimistically, may reach a few dozen per year in a volume up to $z\approx 0.1$. Gravitational wave observations are particularly useful because they yield the masses of the objects involved and allow determination of the spin of the black hole, affording tests of physical models for black hole formation and growth. They also give us advance warning of the electromagnetic flares by weeks or more. Binary stars are common. While only those with small separations may exchange gas with one another, even the widest binaries interact with their gaseous surroundings. Drag forces and accretion rates dictate how these systems are transformed by these interactions. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton flows, in which a binary moves supersonically relative to a homogeneous medium, using the adaptive mesh refinement code FLASH. We simulate a range of values of the initial semi-major axis of the orbit relative to the gravitational focusing impact parameter of the pair. When the binary separation is less than the gravitational focusing impact parameter, the pair orbits within a shared bow shock. When the pair is wider, each object has an individual bow-shock structure. The long-term evolution of the binary is determined by the timescales for accretion, slowing of the center of mass, and orbital inspiral. We find a clear hierarchy of these timescales; a binary's center-of-mass motion is slowed over a shorter timescale than the pair inspirals or accretes. In contrast to previous analytic predictions, which assume an unperturbed background medium, we find that the timescale for orbital inspiral is proportional to the semi-major axis to the $0.19 \pm 0.01$ power. This positive scaling indicates that gaseous drag forces can drive binaries either to coalescence or to the critical separation at which gravitational radiation dominates their further evolution. The prevalence of binary stars at close separations implies that many of these systems will interact or merge during the binary's lifetime. This paper presents hydrodynamic simulations of the scenario of binary coalescence through unstable mass transfer, which drives the pair to closer separations. When the donor star does not rotate synchronously with respect to the orbit, dynamical tidal waves are excited in its envelope. We show that resonance crossings with high azimuthal-order $(m\sim3$ to $6$) fundamental modes induce a visible "polygram" distortion to the star. As the binary orbit tightens, the system sweeps through resonance with modes of decreasing azimuthal order, which are selectively excited. We compare our hydrodynamic simulations to predictions from linear theory of resonant mode excitation. The linear theory provides an estimate of mode amplitudes to within a factor of two, even as the oscillations become quite non-linear as the stars coalesce. We estimate that a wave with 10% radial amplitude generates approximately 1% photometric variability; this may be detectible if such a binary coalescence is caught in action by future photometric all-sky surveys., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journals. Recent observations have revealed that the remnants of stellar-coalescence transients are bipolar. This raises the questions of how these bipolar morphologies arise and what they teach us about the mechanisms of mass ejection during stellar mergers and common-envelope phases. In this paper, we analyze hydrodynamic simulations of the lead-in to binary coalescence, a phase of unstable Roche lobe overflow that takes the binary from the Roche limit separation to the engulfment of the more compact accretor within the envelope of the extended donor. As mass transfer runs away at increasing rates, gas trails away from the binary. Contrary to previous expectations, early mass loss from the system remains bound to the binary and forms a circumbinary torus. Later ejecta, generated as the accretor grazes the surface of the donor, have very different morphologies and are unbound. These two components of mass loss from the binary interact as later, higher-velocity ejecta collide with the circumbinary torus formed by earlier mass loss. Unbound ejecta are redirected toward the poles, and escaping material creates a bipolar outflow. Our findings show that the transition from bound to unbound ejecta from coalescing binaries can explain the bipolar nature of their remnants, with implications for our understanding of the origin of bipolar remnants of stellar-coalescence transients and, perhaps, some preplanetary nebulae., Comment: ApJ accepted

Luminous red nova transients, presumably from stellar coalescence, exhibit long-term precursor emission over hundreds of binary orbits, leading to impulsive outbursts with durations similar to a single orbital period. In an effort to understand these signatures, we present and analyze a hydrodynamic model of unstable mass transfer from a giant-star donor onto a more compact accretor in a binary system. Our simulation begins with mass transfer at the Roche limit separation and traces a phase of runaway decay leading up to the plunge of the accretor within the envelope of the donor. We characterize the fluxes of mass and angular momentum through the system and show that the orbital evolution can be reconstructed from measurements of these quantities. The morphology of outflow from the binary changes significantly as the binary orbit tightens. At wide separations, a thin stream of relatively high-entropy gas trails from the outer Lagrange points. As the orbit tightens, the orbital motion desynchronizes from the donor's rotation, and low-entropy ejecta trace a broad fan of largely ballistic trajectories. An order-of-magnitude increase in mass ejection rate accompanies the plunge of the accretor with the envelope of the donor. We report the discovery of three edge-on binaries with white dwarf companions that gravitationally magnify (instead of eclipsing) the light of their stellar primaries, as revealed by a systematic search for pulses with long periods in the Kepler photometry. We jointly model the self-lensing light curves and radial-velocity orbits to derive the white dwarf masses, all of which are close to 0.6 Solar masses. The orbital periods are long, ranging from 419 to 728 days, and the eccentricities are low, all less than 0.2. These characteristics are reminiscent of the orbits found for many blue stragglers in open clusters and the field, for which stable mass transfer due to Roche-lobe overflow from an evolving primary (now a white dwarf) has been proposed as the formation mechanism.
