4. Transient Thermal and Electrical Characteristics of a Cylindrical LiFeS2 Cell with Equivalent Circuit Model

Abstract

This study examines the discharge behaviour of a cylindrical LiFeS2 cell to evaluate the parameters that can be used to predict and estimate the nonlinear dynamic response of a battery. A linear model is developed to simulate the discharge behaviour and examine the thermal behaviour. In particular, a commercial-grade battery is discharged with the industry-standard hybrid power pulsing characterization (HPPC) test and the current and voltage responses are recorded. The dynamic system is modelled with the equivalent circuit model (ECM) through MATLAB Simulink. A block diagram representation of the equivalent circuit model governing equations was developed. The parameter estimation tool was utilized to reduce the error and fit the simulation results to the experimental voltage responses, in order to obtain state of charge dependent dynamic parameters. Those parameters were then used in a Dual-Potential Multi-Scale Multi-Domain (MSMD) Battery Model solved in ANSYS Fluent to analyze the thermal behaviour by acquiring the temperature profiles and the temperature distribution within the cell. The nonlinear behaviour of the battery was characterized and the equivalent circuit model parameters were identified and are shown to agree with the experimental voltage responses. 39. Additive manufacturing for mass production: a new model to estimate the crystallinity and tensile properties of polypropylene by multi-jet fusion

Abstract

Powder bed fusion (PBF) is an important additive manufacturing (AM) technology that is widely implemented to rapidly fabricate high-precision metallic, polymeric, ceramic, and composite components. The build time for PBF-based manufacture, however, remains extensive. To address this issue, recently high-speed sintering PBF processes, such as HP’s Multi-Jet Fusion (MJF™) technology, were developed to produce polymeric components with much higher throughput. The crystallinity and mechanical properties of components fabricated with MJF™ and other PBF technologies will depend on both process parameters and thermoplastic polymer solidification and crystallization properties. In this research, a new mathematical model has been developed to estimate the crystallinity of semicrystalline polypropylene based on MJF™ process parameters. The proposed predictive model for the crystallinity is a function of the temperature of the process and subsequently the process parameters such as tool power, tool speed, and the scanning area. In addition, an empirical model is also described, which links the crystallinity to the tensile properties of the printed structures quantitatively. The model was validated by the experimental results from mechanical testing and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results from this study demonstrate the precision of the proposed model in predicting both the crystallinity and mechanical attributes of MJF™-printed polymeric materials, which can be used to accelerate design and process optimization for AM production and elevate its acceptance and integration in mainstream engineering.

Abstract

Invar 36 alloy is a material of high interest in the composite tooling sector due to its low coefficient of thermal expansion. Current production of Invar 36 tooling using traditional manufacturing such as casting and forging is associated with long lead times due to a multitude of factors such as labor and component shortages, high material costs, foreign competition, and supply chain issues. An attractive alternate process is the use of an integrated 5-axis CNC hybrid Laser Hot Wire Deposition System (LHWD) for manufacturing invar molds. The hybrid process provides a combination of the additive and subtractive technologies resulting in a synergistic platform for producing and repairing structures and molds. The main novelty and goal of this work is to study the properties of Invar deposited by a LHWD and to provide guidelines for the manufacture of parts using this process. In this study, the thermal expansion behavior of the manufactured specimens has been analyzed and related to its printing parameters and direction. Multiple specimens were extracted for mechanical, dilatometry and metallographic testing. A thermal IR recording of the printing process was also carried out to observe the thermal history of the produced parts to establish thermal influence on performance-property-processing relationship. The results of these tests show the advantage of LHWD technology for the manufacture of Invar alloy parts, as it presents similar thermal expansion behavior as those commercially available with minimal presence of precipitates and no macrostructural failures such as pores, cracks and lacks of fusion.
