Abstract

International audience; We propose an efficient and versatile optimization scheme, based on the combination of multi-objective genetic algorithms and neural-networks, to reproduce specific colors through the optimization of the geometrical parameters of metal-dielectric diffraction gratings. To illustrate and assess the performance of this approach, we tailor the chromatic response of a structure composed of three adjacent hybrid V-groove diffraction gratings. To be close to the experimental situation, we include the feasibility constraints imposed by the fabrication process. The strength of our approach lies in the possibility to simultaneously optimize different contradictory objectives, avoiding time-consuming electromagnetic calculations.

16. Engineering colors in all-dielectric metasurfaces: metamodeling approach

Abstract

In this Letter, we engineer the colors of all-dielectric metasurfaces by means of a metamodel-based optimization approach. This algorithm combines heuristic optimization and neural networks to retrieve the metasurface’s optimal geometrical parameters that serve to reproduce a prescribed color. The metasurfaces were fabricated and experimentally validated through dark field optical microscope images. We present typical results for periodic arrays of nanoparticles with arbitrary cross section. The approach is well-suited for color reproduction and is computationally inexpensive.

19. Metamodeling of high-contrast-index gratings for color reproduction

Abstract

We propose a metamodel-based optimization technique to tailor the chromatic response of high-contrast-index gratings. The algorithm, which couples a population-based metaheuristic with a neural network, is used to retrieve the optimal geometrical parameters of a grating to reproduce a prescribed color. By means of some examples, we assess the possibilities and limitations of our optimization scheme. The numerical evidence found shows that the metamodel approach offers an alternative to traditional metaheuristic techniques that not only provides the best solution for a given geometry and a material but also significantly improves the computing time required for the optimization process.

Abstract

International audience; Context For the past fifteen years, the investigations of the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) for plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) has opened new perspectives for optical nanosensors. Indeed, there is no longer the need of using a prism in order to excite plasmons. The application possibilities are all the more numerous as the fundamental studies go to the direction of single molecule sensing. What is at stake today is the development of such large scale and low cost devices. Scientific aim and methods The scientific aim is here to use Polystyrene-Polymethylmethacrylate (PS-PMMA) copolymers as templates for small Au NPs (6-12nm large) self-organization onto substrates (see Figure 1). We developed two processes: 1) Incorporation of functionalized Au NPs in copolymer solution and organization in PS domains either by thermal annealing or Langmuir-Blodgett method 2) Incorporation of Au salts in PS-PMMA copolymer solution and in-situ synthesis and organization of Au NPs in PS domains. Results These processes are original routes to organize Au NPs onto substrates in order to fabricate optical nanosensors (see Figure 2). Surprisingly, the extinction optical measurements showed an expected main LSPR peak at about 550nm (for 10nm Au NPs) but also a second or even a third peak at longer wavelengths (respectively ~700nm and ~800nm). Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) simulations confirmed the experimental results and tend to argue that the 2nd and/or 3rd peak would come from coupling between very close Au NPs. Conclusion This study opens new routes for large-scale fabrication and organization of Au NPs onto substrates. It could pave the way for developing optical nanosensors when the polymer layer is thin enough.

Abstract

International audience; We present calculations of the efficiency of excitation of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) with surface structures illuminated by focussed beams. First, it is shown that the low reflectivity observed with broad highly directional beams and periodic gratings does not necessarily imply an efficient coupling to SPPs. We then consider the coupling through surface features like steps, grooves and angled steps, and calculate efficiency maps for these structures as functions of the parameters that define them. Finally, we explore the possibilities of improving the coupling efficiency using periodic structures consisting of a small number of rectangular grooves. We find that a surface section with a length of about four wavelengths can couple as much as 45% of the incident light into a directional SPP. 1 Introduction Surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) are surface electromagnetic modes that take the form of surface traveling waves at the boundaries between metals and dielectrics. Although their basic properties have been known for some time, their importance for nano-photonic applications has produced a renewed interest on the subject. Several reviews of their properties and potential uses can be found in the literature [1–5]. Since the real part of their wavenumber is larger than that of light in vacuum (v/c), SPPs cannot be excited directly by volume waves propagating in vacuum. The classical methods of exciting SPPs include diffraction gratings [6, 7], and the Otto and Kretschmann configurations [1]. These methods are well-suited to the use of broad, highly collimated beams, but their implementation can be problematic in confined or miniaturized spaces. Techniques based on the interaction of highly focussed beams with sharp surface features or defects are commonly used in such situations. The efficient launching of SPPs in small spaces is essential for the development of surface plasmon photonic circuits. Abstract

International audience; An enhanced optimization technique based on evolution strategies is investigated and applied to the estimation of some unknown parameters that determine the shape and location of malignant breast tumors. The tumor reconstruction is achieved through the minimization of an error function defined between the measured information and the scattered data generated numerically. Our preliminary results show that using Cauchy's distribution in the evolutionary algorithm leads to a significant reduction in the CPU time required to estimate the shape and location of the tumor.

43. Meta-model-based multi-objective optimization for robust color reproduction using hybrid diffraction gratings.

Abstract

We propose an efficient and versatile optimization scheme, based on the combination of multi-objective genetic algorithms and neural-networks, to reproduce specific colors through the optimization of the geometrical parameters of metal-dielectric diffraction gratings. To illustrate and assess the performance of this approach, we tailor the chromatic response of a structure composed of three adjacent hybrid V-groove diffraction gratings. To be close to the experimental situation, we include the feasibility constraints imposed by the fabrication process. The strength of our approach lies in the possibility to simultaneously optimize different contradictory objectives, avoiding time-consuming electromagnetic calculations.

44. Inverse scattering with a wave-front-matching algorithm.

Abstract

We propose and study a numerical procedure for the reconstruction of surface profiles from far-field scattering data. The algorithm, based on wave-front-matching principles, is used to reconstruct one-dimensional surface profiles from amplitude scattering data calculated by using rigorous techniques. The study is complemented by the development of a sampling strategy and considerations of the tolerance of the algorithm to noise in the data.
