BACKGROUND: Baggers play a significant role in the customer service of supermarket stores. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of biomechanical risk factors on musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) experienced by baggers in the supermarket industry. METHODS: Forty baggers employed among five supermarket stores in the National Capital Region in the Philippines participated in the study. To examine the biomechanical risk factors of the baggers, this study used an observational approach as well as standard ergonomic tools like REBA and NIOSH. In addition, musculoskeletal discomfort was subjectively rated using the standardized Cornell Musculoskeletal Disorder Questionnaire at the end of the work shift. Furthermore, correlation and stepwise regression analysis were utilized to determine the association between biomechanical risk factors and MSD. RESULTS: Approximately 76% of study participants reported work-related MSD. The highest prevalence was in the foot area, followed by upper back, shoulder, lower leg, lower back, neck, and upper arm. BACKGROUND: Improving employee performance has been crucial in different organizations for it reflects the company’s product and service quality. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting employee performance in the engineering and technology department in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The effects of these factors such as communication, empathy, encouragement, growth and rewards to employee performance were analyzed. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that among the five factors, the encouragement, growth, and rewards were found to have a significant effect on employee performance in the engineering and technology department. Surprisingly, communication and empathy were found to have no significant effect to employee performance. CONCLUSIONS: This was the first study that investigated the factors affecting employee performance in the engineering and technology department in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results could serve as a guideline for the management under this type of department. The framework could also be helpful for sustaining the elevated performance of the employees in the engineering and technology department.

BACKGROUND: Traffic enforcers are vulnerable to work accidents, injuries, and illnesses because they are commonly exposed to ergonomic risk factors while performing their tasks. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of environmental risk factors and postural risk factor to the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among traffic enforcers in Manila City, Philippines using binary logistic regression analysis. METHODS: A total of 120 participants were included in the study. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) were utilized. In addition, several devices such as a noise dosimeter, digital air thermometer, and IAQ sensors were also utilized to measure the environmental exposure of enforcers during their work shift. RESULTS: The prevalence of MSDs among traffic enforcers was high, with 71% of the respondents reporting symptoms of MSDs in more than one part of the body for the past 7 days. The body part that has highest prevalence was upper back, followed by lower back, and legs/ankles. Logistic regression analysis revealed that awkward work posture (OR = 4.61, 95% CI = 2.17, 9.83), noise exposure (OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.11, 1.82), heat exposure (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.85, 1.05), and pollution exposure (OR = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.85, 1.05) were significant contributors for the prevalence of MSDs among traffic enforcers in Manila City. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of MSDs among traffic enforcers is caused by their work posture and exposure to psychosocial factors such as noise, heat, and poor air quality. Thus, to minimize the risk of MSDs, it is suggested to provide administrative controls, such as job rotation or shifting, and introduce frequent rest breaks. It is also recommended to provide enforcers with appropriate personal protective equipment, such as cooling vests, noise-canceling earplugs and N95 facemasks. This would help in uplifting musculoskeletal health for traffic enforcers and other workers in a similar field.

The COVID-19 pandemic recently swept the globe, and quarantine sadly compelled most businesses and employees to adapt to the sudden change. Because of this, the employee may face psychological risks like a change in lifestyle, tiredness, burnout, and a drop in job satisfaction. Establishing how each aspect is associated with the job satisfaction of supply chain workers in the Philippines is the main topic of this study. Purposive sampling via an online survey is the non-probability sample method used in this investigation. The target respondents are the logistics company’s employees. Google Forms were used to deliver the self-administered online survey questionnaire. The SEM model was assessed using the hypothesis test’s beta coefficient and R2 findings. The model was proven sufficient to explain or forecast the employee’s loyalty to the organization, stress at work, and job satisfaction. Results of the study revealed that organizational commitment (β = 0.716; p-value < 0.001) had the highest positive association with workers’ job satisfaction, while work stress proved to have a negative association with job satisfaction (β = −0.166; p-value = 0.039). Similarly, job characteristics (β = 0.684; p-value < 0.001) and job involvement (β = 0.189; p-value = 0.009) were also proved to have a strong positive association with organizational commitment, which in turn influences job satisfaction. Finally, lifestyle behavior was found to have a positive association with work stress (β = 0.467; p-value < 0.001) and job burnout (β = 0.369; p-value = 0.001), negatively influencing job satisfaction. As a result, this study can offer supply-chain company personnel more information on the effect of organization commitment, lifestyle behavior, work stress, and job burnout on job satisfaction, which is a key component of job sustainability. Companies must ensure that employees are treated well and meet their demands to promote a sustainable workplace.

The study aimed to investigate Gen Z’s intentions to utilize the Waze mobile application as a solution for sustainable traffic management in Metro Manila. The extended technology acceptance model (TAM) was used to define user behavior and technology usage to determine the factors influencing Filipino drivers’ acceptance of the Waze application. The study utilized a survey given to 300 Filipino drivers travelling within the National Capital Region to accurately measure various factors and their connections to usage intention and actual use. The analytical approach used for this investigation was partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The study’s data results revealed that system quality, perceived location accuracy, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use affect Gen Z’s intentions to use traffic navigation applications, particularly Waze. The study’s results can be applied as a theoretical framework for future researchers of Waze mobile applications, Waze route accuracy, and Waze overall application performance, as well as the features of the Waze application, to evaluate how the use of the Waze mobile application could help in the effective management of traffic situations in Metro Manila. The study assessed the effectiveness of the Waze navigation app as a platform for efficiently managing traffic situations in Metro Manila and highlighted the application performance of Waze and its acceptance by Gen Z users in Metro Manila. The study also highlighted the need a critical review of Waze’s application performance. The study recommends that similar future studies must consider samples from a more diverse geographic backgrounds to obtain a more accurate representation of Filipino users. Future researchers are also advised to adopt a qualitative research design to gain more detailed insights into Filipinos regarding their experience with the Waze application.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has experienced a shift in education, forcing students to transition from traditional face-to-face classes to distance learning. Students found these adjustments challenging, thus affecting their academic performance. In order to address this issue, this study sought to identify the factors affecting students’ learning motivation and academic attention in distance learning using a novel framework of ergonomic domains. Using purposive sampling, 311 senior high school students who took part in online learning at selected schools in NCR Plus answered an online survey. Partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized to investigate and assess the physical, cognitive, and macro-ergonomic factors influencing their learning motivation and academic attention. The study’s results revealed that cognitive and macro-ergonomic factors significantly influence students’ learning motivation, affecting students’ academic attention, while the physical ergonomic factors were found to be insignificant. The findings and analysis imply that academic professionals should be aware of and apply physical, cognitive, and macro-ergonomic concepts to positively influence students’ learning in an online setup. Furthermore, intrinsic motivation should be the main driving force behind learning because it is more successful and beneficial in the long term. The study concludes that as online learning has become more prevalent than ever, it is imperative that ergonomic factors are considered to establish an effective online education system and improve students’ learning motivation and academic attention in distance learning.

The rapid increase in mobile phone usage among Gen Z online gamers has become more prevalent due to the pandemic. However, the limited processing power of mobile devices has prompted the need for alternative solutions, such as cloud gaming. As an alternative, cloud gaming could be used to lessen the expenses and have the processing power of a high-end computer. Cloud gaming allows users to stream games on various devices, including low-end devices such as smartphones and older computers. This extends the lifecycle of hardware by enabling users to access the latest games without the need for constant hardware upgrades. As a result, e-waste generation decreases, reducing the environmental impact associated with the production and disposal of gaming hardware. This study aimed to determine the acceptance of Gen Z towards cloud gaming as a potential solution in achieving sustainability in the digital gaming industry. The extended technology acceptance model (TAM) was utilized to explore the potential for cloud gaming adoption in the Philippines and the attitudes of Gen Z towards this technology. It was found out that for the average Filipino user, attitude plays the highest significant role in cloud gaming adoption. On the other hand, perceived enjoyment and perceived ease of use were found to have a significant influence on attitude, which in turn, affects the behavioral intention to use cloud gaming among Gen Z. Thus, cloud gaming presents a promising avenue for sustainability in the gaming industry, combining energy efficiency, resource optimization, reduced e-waste, and improved accessibility.

Renewable energies (RE) are naturally replenishable and sustainable energy sources. Solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass, and ocean energy are among these sources. This study sought to determine the factors influencing the acceptance of Filipinos’ renewable energy utilization using the Pro-Environmental Planned Behavior (PEPB) model. A questionnaire survey was disseminated to obtain the required information and ascertain the variables affecting the behavioral intention of Filipinos in accepting RE. In examining the results, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was utilized with Partial Least Squares SEM (PLS-SEM) to identify other existing relationships. Findings revealed that Perceived Authority Support (PAS) is the most significant variable affecting Perceived Environmental Concern (PEC), inducing an indirect effect on the Behavioral Intention (BI) of Filipinos. The factor with the highest significance affecting BI is the Subjective Norm (SN). Accordingly, such results suggest that the government should implement incentive-based strategies, while considering the impact of SN, by gaining the public’s favor on the transition from traditional energy sources to green alternatives. In addition, educational programs and campaigns may be administered to spread awareness and fill in information gaps among Filipino citizens.

The Philippines is considered one of the most vulnerable and susceptible countries to the effects of natural disasters due to its location. Therefore, the country needs to be resilient to the natural calamities it faces yearly. The research aimed to determine the factors that affect the protective behavior of Filipinos during natural disasters by integrating protective motivation theory, the theory of planned behaviors, and ergonomic appraisals, and by adding variables such as knowledge and geographical perspectives. PLS-SEM was used to determine the significant factors that affect protective behavior. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to 302 Filipinos in the Philippines through a digital survey using Google forms. The analysis showed that the intention to prepare is the most significant factor affecting their protective behavior, followed by macro and physical ergonomics. Aside from this, attitudes, perceived severity, self-efficacy, response efficacy, response cost, and subjective norms were found to influence their intention to prepare significantly. Furthermore, understanding natural calamities significantly influences an individual’s perceived severity. However, the geographical perspective, perceived vulnerability, perceived behavioral control, and cognitive ergonomics were found to have an insignificant influence on protective behavior for natural calamities. The study findings could be used as a basis for household units or the national government to build disaster management plans and resilience programs. Aside from this, it can also be used by researchers as a basis for exploring other areas that may affect the protective behavior of individuals to prepare for natural calamities worldwide.

The pandemic has caused all of the programs that are offered in primary schools to be interrupted. Evaluating the student’s learning at this level is essential because education development throughout the epidemic is critical, as there was no other educational alternative available during the pandemic. This study examines the use of deep learning neural network (DLNN) to evaluate the parameters influencing primary school students’ online learning experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers considered this issue since primary students’ online learning experiences needed more attention. To carefully analyze the relationships between the parameters of primary students’ learning experience, an online questionnaire was utilized, subject to parents’ participation. A total of 385 Filipino elementary school students were selected and surveyed using a purposive sampling method. Participants in this research ranged in age from seven to thirteen and were supervised by their parents or legal guardians. The result of the study showed that open communication, social presence, design and organization, and facilitation had the most impact on predicting students’ experiences with online education, having a high accuracy from DLNN of 96.12%. This demonstrates the significance of open communication, draws attention to the importance of helping students feel welcomed and appreciated, and demonstrates the influence that instructors have on the overall positive learning experiences of their students. Finally, the findings of this study gave a strong framework and clear conclusions that both schools and the government’s education department could use to improve the way primary education is taught online across the country. Finally, the results and findings of this study could be applied and extended to other related education studies worldwide.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, students face intolerable mental and physical discomfort when taking online classes, directly impacting their learning motivation and academic performance. Related studies indicated that students had negative sentiments regarding online learning. This may be an alarming notion for students, particularly regarding their learning ability and participation in school. To overcome this nuisance, the primary objective of this study was to examine the factors affecting students’ learning motivation and academic performance during online learning using a novel framework of ergonomic appraisal. A total of 316 respondents answered the online questionnaire using a purposive sampling approach through social media platforms. Ergonomic-based indicators for physical, cognitive, and macro-ergonomics were analyzed simultaneously using partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results showed that the design of the workstation, the use of LMS, access to technology, teaching delivery, temperature level, and visual learning style were found to significantly influence students’ learning motivation, which then impacts the student’s academic performance. Thus, it is essential for those who are facilitating distance learning to keep in mind the factors that could motivate the student. As a result, this paper becomes an avenue to help appropriately plan the course program to ensure its viability and productively engage the students since online learning is becoming increasingly necessary. Further, this article also provides recommendations and implications on assisting schools, educators, and students in aiding a student’s learning motivation and academic performance.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the sudden shift of the interactions between students and teachers from the four corners of the classroom to fully online learning through the workstations. By using a conjoint analysis approach, this study aimed to evaluate the preference of undergraduate students from the Philippines on the workstation design attributes during the pandemic. Seven attributes were examined through orthogonal design: the type of gadget, keyboard, mouse, earpiece, desk, kind of chair, and light device. Through a purposive sampling approach, a total of 315 undergraduate students from the Philippines were gathered. Through an online survey with two holdouts, the respondents voluntarily responded to 51 stimuli produced by IBM SPSS using a 7-point Likert scale. Type of gadget (37.925%) was found to be the most significant attribute preferred by the students, followed by the type of mouse (28.345%), kind of chair (14.840%), type of keyboard (7.548%), earpiece (7.177%), light device (2.109%), and desk (2.056%). It is worth noting that the preferred workstation design combination is the personal computer, mechanical keyboard, wired mouse, headset, height-adjustable table, high-back office chair with neck support, and floor lamp. This study is the first to use a conjoint technique to examine undergraduate students’ preferences for workstation design attributes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, by applying the attributes and design developed in this study, the conjoint method can be used and expanded to evaluate the workstation design attributes of other courses and even employees worldwide.

Typhoon Rai (202122) was one of the most devastating natural disasters globally, and the Philippines is the country that was heavily hit by this super typhoon. This study examined the preparedness of Filipinos using a novel framework considering ergonomic domains and disaster knowledge. A total of 414 Filipinos in eight regions affected by the typhoon answered the online questionnaire distributed through social media sites using a convenience sampling approach. Ergonomic-based indicators for physical, cognitive, and macro-ergonomics were analyzed simultaneously with disaster-knowledge indicators such as awareness, adaptation, and risk perception. The results from the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and artificial neural network (ANN) showed that physical ergonomics and macro-ergonomics are key factors affecting the perceived preparedness of Filipinos for Typhoon Rai (202122). Moreover, disaster awareness, adaptation, and risk perception were also found to positively influence the respondents’ perceived preparedness, while disaster awareness influenced adaptation and risk perception. The findings revealed that residents in highly exposed locations must practice typhoon preparation and evacuation ahead of time. The results of this study could be utilized to educate local communities about the importance of emergency response options during a typhoon to lessen the damage and risks associated with it. Academicians and disaster planners may extend the findings of this study to investigate the role of ergonomics and disaster knowledge in developing preparedness systems to increase resilience by strengthening emergency management knowledge, reinforcing coordination, and communication among communities, decreasing occupational dangers, and improving processes to improve response efficiency and effectiveness.

The large consumption of fast fashion brings many negative environmental impacts. Filipino consumers love and buy fast fashion because it is relatively cheap but trendy, and there are lots of fashionable designs to choose from. Despite the shortage in water supply and disposal issues of fast fashion, people still continue to purchase. The lack of awareness of consumers on sustainable fashion consumption led the researchers to conduct a study that aims to identify factors affecting Filipino consumers’ buying decisions on fast fashion using the combined theory of planned behavior, elaboration likelihood model, and hedonic motivation. A total of 407 participants were gathered through a convenience sampling approach, and the data collected were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The result shows that attitude towards fast fashion is the highest contributing factor to purchase intention. While social media positively affects purchase intention, sustainability advocacy negatively impacts the consumers’ intention to buy fast fashion. The awareness of sustainability leads to consumption reduction of fast fashion garments. Surprisingly, perceived product price and quality do not show a significant influence on purchase intention. Incorporating sustainability advocacy on social media may be a great strategy to encourage the sustainable consumption of fashion garments. The findings of this study could be a great tool to influence fashion companies and government institutions to promote sustainability awareness and transition marketing strategies to the sustainable consumption of fashion.

Mental health problems have emerged as one of the biggest problems in the world and one of the countries that has been seen to be highly impacted is the Philippines. Despite the increasing number of mentally ill Filipinos, it is one of the most neglected problems in the country. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting the perceived usability of mobile mental health applications. A total of 251 respondents voluntarily participated in the online survey we conducted. A structural equation modeling and artificial neural network hybrid was applied to determine the perceived usability (PRU) such as the social influence (SI), service awareness (SA), technology self-efficacy (SE), perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), convenience (CO), voluntariness (VO), user resistance (UR), intention to use (IU), and actual use (AU). Results indicate that VO had the highest score of importance, followed by CO, PEOU, SA, SE, SI, IU, PU, and ASU. Having the mobile application available and accessible made the users perceive it as highly beneficial and advantageous. This would lead to the continuous usage and patronage of the application. This result highlights the insignificance of UR. This study was the first study that considered the evaluation of mobile mental health applications. This study can be beneficial to people who have mental health disorders and symptoms, even to health government agencies. Finally, the results of this study could be applied and extended among other health-related mobile applications worldwide.

Korean entertainment industries are dominating all over the world, including in the Philippines. These celebrated mediums included Korean movies, songs, and products, many of which are beloved by Filipinos. As such, this study aims to determine factors that affect the buying decisions of Filipinos with Korean products and services by an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) approach. A total of 306 Filipino survey participants were collected and analyzed in this study through a convenience sampling approach. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to analyze the data using SmartPLS, which determined the correlation of the latent constructs of the factors. Based on the results, attitude had the highest effect on behavioral intention, followed by K-drama influence, K-pop influence, and product quality. Interestingly, product price was found to have a low effect on behavioral intention. This study can serve as a basis for investors and business owners to align business strategies concerning consumer behavior in buying Korean products and services.

COVID-19 contact-tracing mobile applications have been some of the most important tools during the COVID-19 pandemic. One preventive measure that has been incorporated to help reduce the virus spread is the strict implementation of utilizing a COVID-19 tracing application, such as the MorChana mobile application of Thailand. This study aimed to evaluate the factors affecting the actual usage of the MorChana mobile application. Through the integration of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2), latent variables such as performance expectancy (PE), effort expectancy (EE), social influence (SI), facilitating conditions (FC), hedonic motivation (HM), habit (HB), perceived risk (PCR), self-efficacy (SEF), privacy (PR), trust (TR), and understanding COVID-19 (U) were considered to measure the intention to use MorChana (IU) and the actual usage (AU) of the mobile application. This study considered 907 anonymous participants who voluntarily answered an online self-administered survey collected via convenience sampling. The results show that IU presented the highest significant effect on AU, followed by HB, HM, PR, FC, U, SEF, PE, EE, TR, and SI. This is evident due to the strict implementation of using mobile applications upon entering any area of the vicinity. Moreover, PCR was not seen to be a significant latent factor affecting AU. This study is the first to have evaluated mobile contact tracing in Thailand. The integrated framework can be applied and extended to determine factors affecting COVID-19 tracing applications in other countries. Moreover, the findings of this study could be applied to other health-related mobile applications worldwide.

This paper aims to develop a predictive model affecting the musculoskeletal discomfort of occupants of state university in Manila City. Previous studies have proved that poor physical environment is associated with ergonomic risk factors that lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) ([1]. Thus, this paper intends to assess the level of musculoskeletal discomfort of occupants in state universities with regards to its current facility and workstation design by utilizing the Cornell Musculoskeletal Disorder Questionnaire (CMDQ). There are a total of 519 respondents involved in the study comprising of 294 students and 225 faculty members from three (3) selected universities in Manila City. Using ergonomic tools and survey, the researchers were able to identify factors that affect the comfortability of occupants in the state universities. The ergonomic factors considered in the study are the following: (a) environmental-factor: noise, temperature, illumination; (b) workstation design factor: classroom seat dimensions, laboratory workstation dimension, faculty workstation dimensions; (c) personal-factor: age, BMI, years of residency, sitting duration, standing duration and sitting posture. Using statistical analyses, the paper further investigates which ergonomic factors significantly influence the occupants musculoskeletal discomfort. Analysis from the 294 students showed that they experience discomfort on their lower back, upper back, hips/buttocks, neck and shoulders while results from 219 faculty members showed that they experience discomfort on their lower back, neck, upper back, hips/buttocks and lower leg. Furthermore, results showed that factors that have significant correlation to the musculoskeletal discomfort of students are sitting duration $(\mathrm{r}=-0.744;\ \mathrm{p} , sitting posture (0.868; $\mathrm{p} ), seat depth ( $\mathrm{r}=0.698;\ \mathrm{p} ) and stool height $(\mathrm{r}=-0.875;\ \mathrm{p} . While factors that have significant correlation to the musculoskeletal discomfort of professors are standing duration ( $\mathrm{r}=0.898;\ \mathrm{p} ), illumination ( $\mathrm{r}=0.658;\ \mathrm{p} ); seat height ( $\mathrm{r}=0.745;\ \mathrm{p} ) and sitting posture ( $\mathrm{r}=0.812;\ \mathrm{p} ). Using regression analysis, it was further proved that true predictors of musculoskeletal discomfort of occupants are sitting posture, sitting duration, seat height, seat depth, stool height, table height and illumination. It is therefore concluded that there is a need to redesign the workstation and facilities of state universities in order to reduce the musculoskeletal discomforts of occupants.

Daycare center is a nursery place for the supervision of children ages 2–6 years old while the parents are at work. This is one of the places where children build and enhance their characters and skills. Having a comfortable and safe environment for both teachers and kids is very important especially because daycare centers or schools are their second home. Currently, daycare centers in the Philippines do not have a standard design for facilities, only the public classrooms under DepEd have a standard design [1]. Additionally, according to previous study, Philippines' daycare facilities and their resources are insufficient, even basic resources are lacking, and facilities are low because the facility ratio to the kids does not meet the acceptable minimum limit [2]. As a result, many issues and problems are emerging in current daycare centers in the country. To address this, the researchers aim to propose an ergonomic design of day care centers. Principles of ergonomics was used in this study such as anthropometry and work environment design to determine the possible recommendation for the day care facility design. Also, design tools were used to support the analysis of the study such as Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Failure Mode Evaluation and Analysis (FMEA), 3D design modeling and cost-benefit analysis. By analyzing the data gathered from the study, the researchers were able to develop a standard design for daycare facilities based on the recommended measurements from 150 subjects in the study.
