1. Mitochondrial fission factor promotes cisplatin resistancein hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver tumor and one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Chemotherapeutic agents/regimens such as cisplatin (DDP) are frequently used for advanced HCC treatment. However, drug resistance remains a major hindrance and the underline mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the expression pattern and function of mitochondrial fission factor (Mff) in cisplatin-resistant HCC. We found that Mff is highly expressed in cisplatin-resistant HCC tissues and cell lines. Knockdown of Mff suppresses cell proliferation and promotes cell apoptosis of HCC/DDP cells. In addition, knockdown of Mff sensitizes Huh-7/DDP cells to cisplatin treatment, inhibits cell proliferation, migration and invasion, and enhances cell apoptosis. Confocal imaging showed that knockdown of Mff inhibits the mitochondrial fission and downregulates the expression of GTPase dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) in cisplatin-resistant Huh-7/DDP cells. Moreover, xenograft tumor model revealed that knockdown of Mff sensitizes Huh-7/DDP xenograft tumor to cisplatin treatment in vivo. In summary, our findings suggest that Mff regulates mitochondrial Drp1 expression and promotes cisplatin resistance in HCC, which provides a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of cisplatin-resistant HCC.

28. Dual Natural Switching Surface Control for Multilevel Noninverting Buck-Boost Converter With Pulsed Power Loads

Abstract

Pulsed power loads (PPLs) have the requirements of fast dynamic and high-power ratings, which may cause periodic power oscillations in traditional dc microgrid systems. Therefore, an improved dual natural switching surface (DNSS) boundary control law is proposed for multilevel noninverting buck-boost converter to dynamically synchronize the periodic power of PPLs within the minimum switching cycle by deriving and tracking the controlled trajectories. First, the variable structure model is established to derive the natural switching surfaces. Then, a graphical characteristic analysis of the transient switching trajectory is presented for the derivation of DNSSs, which can be divided into the primary and the secondary switching. Also, the control strategy based on DNSS is proposed. Due to the super dynamic performance of boundary control and the load characteristic of PPLs, the inductor current may be over the maximum permissible current, and online over-current protection is designed to achieve fast dynamic performance by limiting the inductor current. Finally, simulations and experiments are given to verify the proposed control law. The results show the proposed method has great dynamic performance for PPLs.

29. An Internal Thermal Distribution Balance Control Between the Top and Bottom Devices in Modular Multilevel Converter

Abstract

The reliability of semiconductor devices directly determines the safe operation of the system. However, temperature is one of the key factors that affect the reliability of semiconductors. Since the dc component of arm current in modular multilevel converter results in the unbalanced thermal stress between the top and bottom devices in the submodule (SM), which causes the discrepancy in the lifetime of four devices inside the SM, and seriously threatens the reliability of the system. To solve this problem, an internal thermal distribution balance control between top and bottom devices is proposed in this article. The proposed control method has the advantage of reducing the junction temperature deviation between the top and bottom devices without affecting the electrical characteristics of the ac and dc ports. Moreover, the voltage stress of all devices is reduced especially for active power transfer, which alleviates the risk of overvoltage failure. The SM lifetime under the proposed control is increased by 14.2% based on full-scale simulation. Finally, a downscale experimental platform is built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

44. How social organizations participate in social governance in China: Official media's attention distribution analysis (1949–2021).

Abstract

The attitude of the Chinese government towards social organizations (SOs) is crucial, as it affects the management rule and development tendency of SOs. To research the rule of SOs' participation in social governance in China, this study used a new historical perspective, the institutional development perspective, to conduct its exploration. This perspective provides an accurate measure of the reality of the SOs' participation, as it involves a mixed research methodology using continuous data from 73 years of reports and content mining, as well as topic clustering analysis to reveal a macroscopic and multi-line picture. Using a co-word analysis of hundreds of reports, from 1949–2021, in the People's Daily, an official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, this study quantified changes in intensity, emotion, and content regarding social organization participation in social governance through topic distribution. Three trends were revealed: (1) "social-oriented character" and "organized-oriented character" were identified during the change in SOs; (2) the extent of being managed gradually strengthened and shifted from the Communist Youth League of China to the Community Party of China; (3) the goals of SOs shifted from general to innovated function in special charitable organizations. The institutional development perspective can complement the focus event perspective, including a new method, co-word analysis, to examine official Chinese media and validate the Administrative Absorption of Society (AAS) theory by identifying two lines of topic clustering trends. The attention distribution analysis in official media from an institutional development perspective can help explore the role of official media reports in analyzing the allocation of national attention and provide new analytical methods for big data mining to establish the social and organizational natures of SOs to optimize their roles. Abstract

Risk assessment has been recognized as an important tool for evaluating heavy metal pollution and providing risk-based information for decision makers. In order to accurately assess the risk of heavy metals in contaminated soil to human health, it is necessary to conduct bioavailability studies on heavy metals in soil. Bioavailability of heavy metals in soils and the implications for risk assessment and land management/remediation has evolved over the decades and now has considerable practical and economic implications internationally. This article aims to explore its evolution by undertaking a bibliometric analysis of the research fields which have addressed heavy metal bioavailability in soils, with a focus on the risk assessment of contaminated land and human exposure to soil-borne metals. Bibliometric analysis techniques are applied to monitor and assess the changing research literature on the bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soils. Over 5000 articles were found for the period 1979-2020. The purpose was not to perform an exhaustive literature review, but to draw out trends and patterns in the literature, and to make observations on past and current priorities. Key words were extracted from the analysis and the roles of different countries in driving the research literature identified. Three phases in literature/subject development were identified. Between 1979 and 2000 (initial phase, 213 articles), studies used extraction procedures and solubility studies to investigate the roles of soil properties on metal form/speciation and focused on bioavailability to (crop) plants in agricultural soils. Between 2001 and 2010 (slow development phase, 1105 articles), attention switched to metals introduced in soil amendments and wastes, metal impacts on soil microbial processes, and incorporating bioavailability in risk assessment. 50. Loss-Balancing Control Strategy for Single-Phase MMC With Asymmetric Phase Leg Structure

Abstract

Submodule (SM) failures are a common fault type in modular multilevel converters (MMCs), and SM symmetrical bypass guarantees the uninterrupted operation of the system. However, the number of SMs between the phase legs is not equal after bypass, which results in a deviation in the capacitor voltage. In this condition, the SM loss difference between phase legs is large, and the reliable operation of the MMC is highly threatened. To address this problem, a loss-balancing control strategy is proposed in this article based on an asymmetric phase leg structure. Specifically, the currents of two-phase legs are improved by injecting fundamental frequency components in the proposed control strategy. In addition, the voltage stress of the device is relieved by adjusting the number of equivalent SMs. On this basis, the minimization of the average SM loss deviation between phase legs is taken as the objective function, where the solution for injecting the fundamental frequency components and the number of equivalent SMs is obtained by iterative optimization. Finally, simulation analysis and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
