Search

Coincident multi-messenger observation of cosmic sources can offer numerous benefits. One significant advantage is enhancing the detection significance of separate detectors by correlating their data and assuming a joint emission. We have formulated an approach for updating the Bayesian posterior probability of an astrophysical origin, namely $p_{\rm astro}$, relying on multi-messenger coincidences. We demonstrated this with candidate coincident gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos. Applying our method to the public data of candidate coincident high-energy neutrinos with subthreshold gravitational-wave triggers, we found that in the case of highly energetic neutrino coincidences, $p_{\rm astro}$ can increase from approximately $\sim 0.1$ to $\sim 0.9$. Gravitational-wave astronomy has developed enormously over the last decade with the first detections across different frequency bands, but has yet to access $0.1-10$ $\mathrm{Hz}$ gravitational waves. Gravitational waves in this band are emitted by some of the most enigmatic sources, including intermediate-mass binary black hole mergers, early inspiralling compact binaries, and possibly cosmic inflation. To tap this exciting band, we propose the construction of a detector based on pulsar timing principles, the Artificial Precision Timing Array (APTA). We envision APTA as a solar system array of artificial "pulsars"$-$precision-clock-carrying satellites that emit pulsing electromagnetic signals towards Earth or other centrum. In this fundamental study, we estimate the clock precision needed for APTA to successfully detect gravitational waves. Our results suggest that a clock relative uncertainty of $10^{-17}$, which is currently attainable, would be sufficient for APTA to surpass LISA's sensitivity in the decihertz band and observe $10^3-10^4$ $\mathrm{M}_\odot$ black hole mergers. Future atomic clock technology realistically expected in the next decade would enable the detection of an increasingly diverse set of astrophysical sources, including stellar-mass compact binaries that merge in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA band, extreme-mass-ratio inspirals, and Type Ia supernovae. In scientific and engineering scenarios, a recurring task is the detection of low-dimensional families of signals or patterns. A classic family of approaches, exemplified by template matching, aims to cover the search space with a dense template bank. While simple and highly interpretable, it suffers from poor computational efficiency due to unfavorable scaling in the signal space dimensionality. In this work, we study TpopT (TemPlate OPTimization) as an alternative scalable framework for detecting low-dimensional families of signals which maintains high interpretability. We provide a theoretical analysis of the convergence of Riemannian gradient descent for TpopT, and prove that it has a superior dimension scaling to covering. We also propose a practical TpopT framework for nonparametric signal sets, which incorporates techniques of embedding and kernel interpolation, and is further configurable into a trainable network architecture by unrolled optimization. The proposed trainable TpopT exhibits significantly improved efficiency-accuracy tradeoffs for gravitational wave detection, where matched filtering is currently a method of choice. We further illustrate the general applicability of this approach with experiments on handwritten digit data.

Precursor emission has been observed seconds to minutes before some short gamma-ray bursts. While the origins of these precursors remain unknown, one potential explanation relies on the resonance of neutron star pulsational modes with the tidal forces during the inspiral phase of a compact binary merger. In this paper, we present a model for short gamma-ray burst precursors which relies on tidally resonant neutron star oceans. In this scenario, the onset of tidal resonance in the crust-ocean interface mode corresponds to the ignition of the precursor flare, possibly through the interaction between the excited neutron star ocean and the surface magnetic fields. From just the precursor total energy, the time before the main event, and a detected quasi-periodic oscillation frequency, we may constrain the binary parameters and neutron star ocean properties as never before. Our model can immediately distinguish neutron star-black hole mergers from binary neutron star mergers without gravitational wave detection. We apply our model to GRB 211211A, the recently detected long duration short gamma-ray burst with a quasi-periodic precursor, and explore the parameters of this system within its context. The precursor of GRB 211211A is consistent with a tidally resonant neutron star ocean explanation that requires an extreme-mass ratio NSBH merger and a high mass neutron star. While difficult to reconcile with the gamma-ray burst main emission and associated kilonova, our results constrain the possible precursor generating mechanisms in this system. Large scientific collaborations, often with hundreds or thousands of members, are an excellent opportunity for a case study in best practices implemented while developing open source hardware. Using a publicly available design of timing equipment for gravitational wave detectors as a case study, we evaluated many facets of the open source hardware development, including practices, awareness, documentation, and longevity. Two diverse student teams, composed of high school and college students, participated in an end-to-end exercise of testing publicly-available documented hardware that originated from more than a decade ago. We found that the primary value of large collaborations lie in the ability to cultivate teamwork, provide a diverse set of role-models, and explore the possibilities of open hardware development of varying complexities. Learning from the experiences of the student groups, we make constructive recommendations where the open source hardware community can learn from the collaborations and vice versa.

LIGO's mission critical timing system has enabled gravitational wave and multi-messenger astrophysical discoveries as well as the rich science extracted. Achieving optimal detector sensitivity, detecting transient gravitational waves, and especially localizing gravitational wave sources, the underpinning of multi-messenger astrophysics, all require proper gravitational wave data time-stamping. Measurements of the relative arrival times of gravitational waves between different detectors allow for coherent gravitational wave detections, localization of gravitational wave sources, and the creation of skymaps. The carefully designed timing system achieves these goals by mitigating phase noise to avoid signal up-conversion and maximize gravitational wave detector sensitivity. The timing system also redundantly performs self-calibration and self-diagnostics in order to ensure reliable, extendable, and traceable time stamping. In this paper, we describe and quantify the performance of these core systems during the latest O3 scientific run of LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA. We present results of the diagnostic checks done to verify the time-stamping for individual gravitational wave events observed during O3 as well as the timing system performance for all of O3 in LIGO Livingston and LIGO Hanford. We find that, after 3 observing runs, the LIGO timing system continues to reliably meet mission requirements of timing precision below 1 $\mu$s with a significant safety margin., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

The multi-messenger detection of GW170817 showed that binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are progenitors of (at least some) short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), and that short GRB jets (and their afterglows) can have structures (and observational properties) more complex than predicted by the standard top-hat jet scenario. Indeed, the emission from the structured jet launched in GW170817 peaked in the radio band (cm wavelengths) at about 100 d since merger - a timescale much longer than the typical time span of radio follow-up observations of short GRBs. Moreover, radio searches for a potential late-time radio flare from the fast tail of the neutron-rich debris that powered the kilonova associated with GW170817 (AT2017gfo) have extended to even longer timescales (years after the merger). In light of this, here we present the results of an observational campaign targeting a sample of seven, years-old GRBs in the Swift/BAT sample with no redshift measurements and no promptly-identified X-ray counterpart. Our goal is to assess whether this sample of short GRBs could harbor nearby BNS mergers, searching for the late-time radio emission expected from their ejecta. We found one radio candidate counterpart for one of the GRBs in our sample, GRB111126A, though an origin related to emission from star formation or from an AGN in its host galaxy cannot be excluded without further observations., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, published in ApJ

Gravitational wave astronomy is a vibrant field that leverages both classic and modern data processing techniques for the understanding of the universe. Various approaches have been proposed for improving the efficiency of the detection scheme, with hierarchical matched filtering being an important strategy. Meanwhile, deep learning methods have recently demonstrated both consistency with matched filtering methods and remarkable statistical performance. In this work, we propose Hierarchical Detection Network (HDN), a novel approach to efficient detection that combines ideas from hierarchical matching and deep learning. The network is trained using a novel loss function, which encodes simultaneously the goals of statistical accuracy and efficiency. We discuss the source of complexity reduction of the proposed model, and describe a general recipe for initialization with each layer specializing in different regions. We demonstrate the performance of HDN with experiments using open LIGO data and synthetic injections, and observe with two-layer models a $79\%$ efficiency gain compared with matched filtering at an equal error rate of $0.2\%$. Furthermore, we show how training a three-layer HDN initialized using two-layer model can further boost both accuracy and efficiency, highlighting the power of multiple simple layers in efficient detection.

Neutron stars in astrophysical binary systems represent exciting sources for multi-messenger astrophysics. A potential source of electromagnetic transients from compact binary systems is the neutron star ocean, the external fluid layer encasing a neutron star. We present a groundwork study into tidal waves in neutron star oceans and their consequences. Specifically, we investigate how oscillation modes in neutron star oceans can be tidally excited during compact binary inspirals and parabolic encounters. We find that neutron star oceans can sustain tidal waves with frequencies between $0.01-20$ Hz. Our results suggest that tidally resonant neutron star ocean waves may serve as a never-before studied source of precursor electromagnetic emission prior to neutron star-black hole and binary neutron star mergers. If accompanied by electromagnetic flares, tidally resonant neutron star ocean waves, whose energy budget can reach $10^{46}$ erg, may serve as early warning signs ($\gtrsim 1$ minute before merger) for compact binary mergers. Similarly, excited ocean tidal waves will coincide with neutron star parabolic encounters. Depending on the neutron star ocean model and a flare emission scenario, tidally resonant ocean flares may be detectable by Fermi and NuSTAR out to $\gtrsim 100$ Mpc with detection rates as high as $\sim 7$ yr$^{-1}$ for binary neutron stars and $\sim0.6$ yr$^{-1}$ for neutron star-black hole binaries. State of the art quantum computers have very limited applicability for accurate calculations. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of qubit-based matched filtering for a detection of the gravitational-wave signal from a binary black hole merger. With our implementation on noisy superconducting qubits, we obtained a similar signal-to-noise ratio for the binary black hole merger as achievable with classical computation, providing evidence for the utility of qubits for practically relevant tasks. The algorithm we invented for this application is a Monte Carlo algorithm which uses quantum and classical computation together. It provides a quasi-quadartic speed-up for time-domain convolution, similar to achievable with fast Fourier transform., Comment: 5+5 pages, 7 figures

With the inception of gravitational wave astronomy, astrophysical studies using interferometric techniques have begun to probe previously unknown parts of the universe. In this work, we investigate the potential of a new interferometric experiment to study a unique group of gravitationally interacting sources within our solar system: binary asteroids. We present the first study into binary asteroid detection via gravitational signals. We identify the interferometer sensitivity necessary for detecting a population of binary asteroids in the asteroid belt. We find that the space-based gravitational wave detector LISA will have negligible ability to detect these sources as these signals will be well below the LISA noise curve. Consequently, we propose a 4.6 AU and a 1 AU arm-length interferometers specialized for binary asteroid detection, targeting frequencies between $10^{-6}$ and $10^{-4}$ Hz. Our results demonstrate that the detection of binary asteroids with space-based gravitational wave interferometers is possible though very difficult, requiring substantially improved interferometric technology over what is presently proposed for space-based missions. As engineered systems grow in complexity, there is an increasing need for automatic methods that can detect, diagnose, and even correct transient anomalies that inevitably arise and can be difficult or impossible to diagnose and fix manually. Among the most sensitive and complex systems of our civilization are the detectors that search for incredibly small variations in distance caused by gravitational waves -- phenomena originally predicted by Albert Einstein to emerge and propagate through the universe as the result of collisions between black holes and other massive objects in deep space. The extreme complexity and precision of such detectors causes them to be subject to transient noise issues that can significantly limit their sensitivity and effectiveness. In this work, we present a demonstration of a method that can detect and characterize emergent transient anomalies of such massively complex systems. We illustrate the performance, precision, and adaptability of the automated solution via one of the prevalent issues limiting gravitational-wave discoveries: noise artifacts of terrestrial origin that contaminate gravitational wave observatories' highly sensitive measurements and can obscure or even mimic the faint astrophysical signals for which they are listening. Specifically, we demonstrate how a highly interpretable convolutional classifier can automatically learn to detect transient anomalies from auxiliary detector data without needing to observe the anomalies themselves. We also illustrate several other useful features of the model, including how it performs automatic variable selection to reduce tens of thousands of auxiliary data channels to only a few relevant ones; how it identifies behavioral signatures predictive of anomalies in those channels; and how it can be used to investigate individual anomalies and the channels associated with them.

As our ability to sense increases, we are experiencing a transition from data-poor problems, in which the central issue is a lack of relevant data, to data-rich problems, in which the central issue is to identify a few relevant features in a sea of observations. Motivated by applications in gravitational-wave astrophysics, we study the problem of predicting the presence of transient noise artifacts in a gravitational wave detector from a rich collection of measurements from the detector and its environment. We argue that feature learning--in which relevant features are optimized from data--is critical to achieving high accuracy. We introduce models that reduce the error rate by over 60% compared to the previous state of the art, which used fixed, hand-crafted features. Feature learning is useful not only because it improves performance on prediction tasks; the results provide valuable information about patterns associated with phenomena of interest that would otherwise be undiscoverable. In our application, features found to be associated with transient noise provide diagnostic information about its origin and suggest mitigation strategies. Learning in high-dimensional settings is challenging. Through experiments with a variety of architectures, we identify two key factors in successful models: sparsity, for selecting relevant variables within the high-dimensional observations; and depth, which confers flexibility for handling complex interactions and robustness with respect to temporal variations. We illustrate their significance through systematic experiments on real detector data. Our results provide experimental corroboration of common assumptions in the machine-learning community and have direct applicability to improving our ability to sense gravitational waves, as well as to many other problem settings with similarly high-dimensional, noisy, or partly irrelevant data.

The recent discovery of electromagnetic signals in coincidence with gravitational waves from neutron-star mergers has solidified the importance of multimessenger campaigns for studying the most energetic astrophysical events. Pioneering multimessenger observatories, such as the LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave detectors and the IceCube neutrino observatory, record many candidate signals that fall short of the detection significance threshold. These sub-threshold event candidates are promising targets for multimessenger studies, as the information provided by these candidates may, when combined with time-coincident gamma-ray observations, lead to significant detections. In this contribution, I describe our use of sub-threshold binary neutron star merger candidates identified in Advanced LIGO's first observing run (O1) to search for transient events in very-high-energy gamma rays using archival observations from the VERITAS imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array. I describe the promise of this technique for future joint sub-threshold searches.

The observed distributions of the source properties from gravitational-wave detections are biased due to the selection effects and detection criteria in the detections, analogous to the Malmquist bias. In this work, this observation bias is investigated through its fundamental statistical and physical origins. An efficient semi-analytical formulation for its estimation is derived which is as accurate as the standard method of numerical simulations, with only a millionth of the computational cost. Then, the estimated bias is used for unmodelled inferences on the binary black hole population. These inferences show additional structures, specifically two peaks in the joint mass distribution around binary masses $\sim10$ M$_\odot$ and $\sim30$ M$_\odot$. Gravitational wave science is a pioneering field with rapidly evolving data analysis methodology currently assimilating and inventing deep learning techniques. The bulk of the sophisticated flagship searches of the field rely on the time-tested matched filtering principle within their core. In this paper, we make a key observation on the relationship between the emerging deep learning and the traditional techniques: matched filtering is formally equivalent to a particular neural network. This means that a neural network can be constructed analytically to exactly implement matched filtering, and can be further trained on data or boosted with additional complexity for improved performance. Moreover, we show that the proposed neural network architecture can outperform matched filtering, both with or without knowledge of a prior on the parameter distribution. When a prior is given, the proposed neural network can approach the statistically optimal performance. We also propose and investigate two different neural network architectures MNet-Shallow and MNet-Deep, both of which implement matched filtering at initialization and can be trained on data. MNet-Shallow has simpler structure, while MNet-Deep is more flexible and can deal with a wider range of distributions. Our theoretical findings are corroborated by experiments using real LIGO data and synthetic injections, where our proposed methods significantly outperform matched filtering at false positive rates above $5\times 10^{-3}\%$. The fundamental equivalence between matched filtering and neural networks allows us to define a "complexity standard candle" to characterize the relative complexity of the different approaches to gravitational wave signal searches in a common framework. Small, highly absorbing points are randomly present on the surfaces of the main interferometer optics in Advanced LIGO. The resulting nano-meter scale thermo-elastic deformations and substrate lenses from these micron-scale absorbers significantly reduces the sensitivity of the interferometer directly though a reduction in the power-recycling gain and indirect interactions with the feedback control system. We review the expected surface deformation from point absorbers and provide a pedagogical description of the impact on power build-up in second generation gravitational wave detectors (dual-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers). This analysis predicts that the power-dependent reduction in interferometer performance will significantly degrade maximum stored power by up to 50% and hence, limit GW sensitivity, but suggests system wide corrections that can be implemented in current and future GW detectors. This is particularly pressing given that future GW detectors call for an order of magnitude more stored power than currently used in Advanced LIGO in Observing Run 3. The origin, environment, and evolution of stellar-mass black hole binaries are still a mystery. One of the proposed binary formation mechanisms is manifest in dynamical interactions between multiple black holes. A resulting framework of these dynamical interactions is the so-called hierarchical triple merger scenario, which happens when three black holes become gravitationally bound, causing two successive black hole mergers to occur. In such successive mergers, the black holes involved are directly related to each other, and hence this channel can be directly tested from the properties of the detected binary black hole mergers. Here we present a search for hierarchical triple mergers among events within the GWTC-1 and GWTC-2 catalogs of LIGO/Virgo, the eccentric localization of GW190521 and those found by the IAS-Princeton group. The search includes improved statistical quantification that also accounts for black hole spins. We perform our analysis for different upper bounds on the mass distribution of first generation BHs. Our results demonstrate the importance of the mass distributions' properties for constraining the hierarchical merger scenario. We present the individually significant merger pairs. Electromagnetic observations of gravitational wave and high-energy neutrino events are crucial in understanding the physics of their astrophysical sources. X-ray counterparts are especially useful in studying the physics of the jet, the energy of the outflow, and the particle acceleration mechanisms in the system. We present the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory prompt searches for X-ray counterparts to the joint gravitational wave and high-energy neutrino coincident events that happened during the third observing run of LIGO/Virgo. Swift observed the overlap between gravitational wave and neutrino error regions for three of the considerable (p-value < 1%) joint gravitational wave and high-energy neutrino coincident alerts, which were generated by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in realtime after triggering by the LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave public alerts. The searches did not associate any X-ray counterparts to any of the joint gravitational wave and high-energy neutrino coincident events, however, the follow-up of these alerts significantly improved the tiling techniques covering regions between the gravitational wave sky maps and neutrino's error regions, making the realtime system ready for the future potential discoveries. Quantification of the significance of a candidate multi-messenger detection of cosmic events is an emerging need in the astrophysics and astronomy communities. In this paper we show that a model-independent optimal search does not exist, and we present a general Bayesian method for the optimal model-dependent search, which is scalable to any number and any kind of messengers, and applicable to any model. In the end, we demonstrate it through an example for a joint gravitational wave, high-energy neutrino, short gamma-ray burst event search; which has not been examined heretofore., Comment: 8 pages

Gravitational waves from neutron star mergers have long been considered a promising way to measure the Hubble constant, $H_0$, which describes the local expansion rate of the universe. While black hole mergers are more abundantly observed, their expected lack of electromagnetic emission and poor gravitational-wave localization make them less well suited for measuring $H_0$. Black hole mergers within the disks of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) could be an exception. Accretion from the AGN disk may produce an electromagnetic signal, pointing observers to the host galaxy. Alternatively, the low number density of AGNs could help identify the host galaxy of $1-5\%$ of mergers. Here we show that black hole mergers in AGN disks may be a sensitive way to determine $H_0$ with gravitational waves. If $1\%$ ($10\%$) of LIGO's observations occur in AGN disks with identified host galaxies, we could measure $H_0$ with $12\%$ ($4\%$) uncertainty in five years, possibly comparable to the sensitivity of neutron star mergers and set to considerably improve current gravitational wave measurements., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Shapiro time delay is one of the fundamental tests of general relativity and post-Newtonian theories of gravity. Consequently, its measurements can be used to probe the parameter $\gamma$ which is related to spacetime curvature produced by a unit mass in the post-Newtonian formalism of gravity. To date all measurements of time delay have been conducted on astronomical scales. It was asserted in 2010 that gravitational wave detectors on Earth could be used to measure Shapiro delay on a terrestrial scale via massive rotating systems. Building on that work, we consider how measurements of Shapiro delay can be made using next-generation gravitational wave detectors. We perform an analysis for measuring Shapiro delay with the next-generation gravitational wave detectors Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope to determine how precisely the effect can be measured. Using a rotating mass unit design, we find that Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope can measure the Shapiro delay signal with amplitude signal to noise ratios upwards of $\sim28 $ and $\sim43$ in 1 year of integration time, respectively. Machine learning has emerged as a popular and powerful approach for solving problems in astrophysics. We review applications of machine learning techniques for the analysis of ground-based gravitational-wave detector data. Examples include techniques for improving the sensitivity of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave searches, methods for fast measurements of the astrophysical parameters of gravitational-wave sources, and algorithms for reduction and characterization of non-astrophysical detector noise. These applications demonstrate how machine learning techniques may be harnessed to enhance the science that is possible with current and future gravitational-wave detectors.

One of the proposed channels of binary black hole mergers involves dynamical interactions of three black holes. In such scenarios, it is possible that all three black holes merge in a so-called hierarchical merger chain, where two of the black holes merge first and then their remnant subsequently merges with the remaining single black hole. Depending on the dynamical environment, it is possible that both mergers will appear within the observable time window. Here we perform a search for such merger pairs in the public available LIGO and Virgo data from the O1/O2 runs. Using a frequentist p-value assignment statistics we do not find any significant merger pair candidates, the most significant being GW170809-GW151012 pair. Assuming no observed candidates in O3/O4, we derive upper limits on merger pairs to be $\sim11-110\ {\rm year^{-1}Gpc^{-3}}$, corresponding to a rate that relative to the total merger rate is $\sim 0.1-1.0$. From this we argue that both a detection and a non-detection within the next few years can be used to put useful constraints on some dynamical progenitor models., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Since the start of the gravitational wave observation era, no joint high energy neutrino and gravitational wave event has been found. These non-detections could be used for setting an upper bound on the neutrino emission properties for gravitational wave events individually or for a set of them. Although in the previous joint high energy neutrino and gravitational wave event searches upper limits have been found, there is a lack of consistent method for the calculation. The problem addressed in this paper is finding those limits for astrophysical events which are localized poorly in the sky where the sensitivities of the neutrino detectors change significantly and can also emit neutrinos, for example the gravitational wave detections. Here we describe methods for assigning limits for expected neutrino count, emission fluence and isotropically equivalent emission based on maximum likelihood estimators. We estimate the rate of gravitational microlensing events of cluster stars due to black holes (BHs) in the globular cluster NGC 5139 ($\omega Cen$). Theory and observations both indicate that $\omega Cen$ may contain thousands of BHs, but their mass spectrum and exact distribution are not well constrained. In this Letter we show that one may observe microlensing events on a timescale of years in $\omega Cen$, and such an event sample can be used to infer the BH distribution. Direct detection of BHs will, in the near future, play a major role in distinguishing binary BH merger channels. The LIGO observatories detect gravitational waves through monitoring changes in the detectors' length down to below $10^{-19}$\,$m/\sqrt{Hz}$ variation---a small fraction of the size of the atoms that make up the detector. To achieve this sensitivity, the detector and its environment need to be closely monitored. Beyond the gravitational wave data stream, LIGO continuously records hundreds of thousands of channels of environmental and instrumental data in order to monitor for possibly minuscule variations that contribute to the detector noise. A particularly challenging issue is the appearance in the gravitational wave signal of brief, loud noise artifacts called ``glitches,'' which are environmental or instrumental in origin but can mimic true gravitational waves and therefore hinder sensitivity. Currently they are primarily identified by analysis of the gravitational wave data stream. Here we present a machine learning approach that can identify glitches by monitoring \textit{all} environmental and detector data channels, a task that has not previously been pursued due to its scale and the number of degrees of freedom within gravitational-wave detectors. The presented method is capable of reducing the gravitational-wave detector network's false alarm rate and improving the LIGO instruments, consequently enhancing detection confidence.

The recent discovery of TeV emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by the MAGIC and H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescopes confirmed that emission from these transients can extend to very high energies. The TeV energy domain reaches the most sensitive band of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). This newly anticipated, improved sensitivity will enhance the prospects of gravitational-wave follow-up observations by CTA to probe particle acceleration and high-energy emission from binary black hole and neutron star mergers, and stellar core-collapse events. Here we discuss the implications of TeV emission on the most promising strategies of choice for the gravitational-wave follow-up effort for CTA and Cherenkov telescopes more broadly. We find that TeV emission (i) may allow more than an hour of delay between the gravitational-wave event and the start of CTA observations; (ii) enables the use of CTA's small size telescopes that have the largest fields of view. We characterize the number of pointings needed to find a counterpart. (iii) We compute the annual follow-up time requirements and find that prioritization will be needed. (iv) Even a few telescopes could detect sufficiently nearby counterparts, raising the possibility of adding a handful of small-size or medium-size telescopes to the network at diverse geographic locations taking into account the positions of CTA and the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA network. (v) The continued operation of VERITAS/H.E.S.S./MAGIC would be a useful compliment to CTA's follow-up capabilities by increasing the sky area that can be rapidly covered, especially for directions above and 'below' the United States in which the present network of gravitational-wave detectors is more sensitive., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Multi-messenger searches for gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos provide important insights into the dynamics of and particle acceleration by black holes and neutron stars. With LIGO's third observing period (O3), the number of gravitational wave detections has been substantially increased. The rapid identification of joint signals is crucial for electromagnetic follow-up observations of transient emission that is only detectable for short periods of time. High-energy neutrino direction can be reconstructed to sub-degree precision, making a joint detection far better localized than a standalone gravitational-wave signal. We present the latest sensitivity of joint searches and discuss the Low-Latency Algorithm for Multi-messenger Astrophysics (LLAMA) that combines LIGO/Virgo gravitational-wave candidates and searches in low-latency for coincident high-energy neutrinos from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The origins of the stellar-mass black hole mergers discovered by LIGO/Virgo are still unknown. Here we show that, if migration traps develop in the \add{accretion} disks of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and promote the mergers of their captive black holes, the majority of black holes within disks will undergo hierarchical mergers---with one of the black holes being the remnant of a previous merger. 40% of AGN-assisted mergers detected by LIGO/Virgo will include a black hole with mass $\gtrsim 50$ M$_\odot$, the mass limit from stellar core collapse. Hierarchical mergers at traps in AGNs will exhibit black hole spins (anti-)aligned with the binary's orbital axis, a distinct property from other hierarchical channels. Our results are suggestive, although not definitive (with Odds ratio of $\sim 1$), that LIGO's heaviest merger so far, GW170729, could have originated from this channel., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; accepted in PRL

Heavy elements produced exclusively through rapid neutron capture (the '$r$-process') originate from violent cosmic explosions. While neutron star mergers are the primary candidates, another plausible production site are 'collapsars'---collapsing massive stars that form a black hole with an accretion disk. Here we show that collapsars are too rare to be the prime origin of $r$-process elements in the Solar System. By comparing numerical simulations with the early Solar System abundances of actinides produced exclusively through the $r$-process, we exclude higher than 20% contribution from collapsars with 90% confidence. We additionally limit $r$-process ejecta masses from collapsars to less than 10% of the ejecta mass from neutron star mergers, about $10^{-2}$M$_\odot$., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ Letters; 5 pages, 3 figures

The stellar mass binary black hole (sBBH) mergers presently detected by LIGO may originate wholly or in part from binary black hole mergers embedded in disks of gas around supermassive black holes. Determining the contribution of these active galactic nucleus (AGN) disks to the sBBH merger rate enables us to uniquely measure important parameters of AGN disks, including their typical density, aspect ratio, and lifetime, thereby putting unique limits on an important element of galaxy formation. For the first time, gravitational waves will allow us to reveal the properties of the hidden interior of AGN disks, while electromagnetic radiation (EM) probes the disk photosphere. The localization of sBBH merger events from LIGO is generally insufficient for association with a single EM counterpart. However, the contribution to the LIGO event rate from rare source types (such as AGNs) can be determined on a statistical basis. The identification of the electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational wave event, GW170817, and discovery of neutrinos and gamma-rays from TXS 0506+056 heralded the new era of multi-messenger astrophysics. As the number of multi-messenger events rapidly grow over the next decade, the cyberinfrastructure requirements to handle the increase in data rates, data volume, need for event follow up, and analysis across the different messengers will also explosively grow. The cyberinfrastructure requirements to enhance multi-messenger astrophysics will both be a major challenge and opportunity for astronomers, physicists, computer scientists and cyberinfrastructure specialists. Here we outline some of these requirements and argue for a distributed cyberinfrastructure institute for multi-messenger astrophysics to meet these challenges., Comment: 7 pages, astro2020 white paper

The localization of stellar-mass binary black hole mergers using gravitational waves is critical in understanding the properties of the binaries' host galaxies, observing possible electromagnetic emission from the mergers, or using them as a cosmological distance ladder. The precision of this localization can be substantially increased with prior astrophysical information about the binary system. In particular, constraining the inclination of the binary can reduce the distance uncertainty of the source. Here we present the first realistic set of localizations for binary black hole mergers, including different prior constraints on the binaries' inclinations. We find that prior information on the inclination can reduce the localization volume by a factor of 3. We discuss two astrophysical scenarios of interest: (i) follow-up searches for beamed electromagnetic/neutrino counterparts and (ii) mergers in the accretion disks of active galactic nuclei., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 5 pages, 2 figures

We describe in detail the online data analysis pipeline that was used in the multi-messenger search for common sources of gravitational waves (GWs) and high-energy neutrinos (HENs) during the second observing period (O2) of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. Beyond providing added scientific insight into source events, low-latency coincident HENs can offer better localization than GWs alone, allowing for faster electromagnetic follow-up. Transitioning GW+HEN analyses to low-latency, automated pipelines is therefore mission-critical for future multi-messenger efforts. The O2 Low-Latency Algorithm for Multi-messenger Astrophysics (\pipeline) also served as a proof-of-concept for future online GW+HEN searches and led to a codebase that can handle other messengers as well. During O2, the pipeline was used to take LIGO/Virgo GW candidates as triggers and search in realtime for temporally coincident HEN candidates provided by the IceCube Collaboration that fell within the \ninetyCR of the reconstructed GW skymaps. The algorithm used NASA's Gamma-ray Coordinates Network to report coincident alerts to LIGO/Virgo's electromagnetic follow-up partners., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The multi-messenger observation of gamma-ray burst (GRB)\,170817A from the nearby binary neutron-star merger GW170817 demonstrated that low-energy $\gamma$-ray emission can be observed at relatively large angles from GRB jet axes. If such structured emission is typical, then the currently known sample of short GRBs with no distance measurements may contain multiple nearby off-axis events whose delayed afterglows could have gone undetected. These nearby neutron star mergers may produce telltale radio flares peaking years after the prompt GRB emission that could still be observable. Here, we show that several short GRBs observed by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on the Neil Gehrels \textit{Swift} satellite, with no identified afterglow and no distance measurement, could potentially be associated with radio flares detectable by sensitive cm-wavelength radio facilities such as the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We also examine optical follow-up observations that have been carried out for these events, and find that a nearby GW170817-like kilonova is ruled out for only a third of them., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS; 11 pages, 3 figures

Multi-messenger astrophysics is undergoing a transition towards low-latency searches based on signals that could not individually be established as discoveries. The rapid identification of signals is important in order to initiate timely follow-up observations of transient emission that is only detectable for short time periods. Joint searches for gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos represent a prime motivation for this strategy. Both gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos are typically emitted over a short time frame of seconds to minutes during the formation or evolution of compact objects. In addition, detectors searching for both messengers observe the whole sky continuously, making observational information on potential transient sources rapidly available to guide follow-up electromagnetic surveys. The direction of high-energy neutrinos can be reconstructed to sub-degree precision, making a joint detection much better localized than a typical gravitational wave signal. Here we present a search strategy for joint gravitational wave and high-energy neutrino events that allows the incorporation of astrophysical priors and detector characteristics following a Bayesian approach. We aim to determine whether a multi-messenger correlated signal is a real event, a chance coincidence of two background events or the chance coincidence of an astrophysical signal and a background event. We use an astrophysical prior that is model agnostic and takes into account mostly geometric factors. Our detector characterization in the search is mainly empirical, enabling detailed realistic accounting for the sensitivity of the detector that can depend on the source properties. By this means, we will calculate the false alarm rate for each multi-messenger event which is required for initiating electromagnetic follow-up campaigns., Comment: 12 pages. Accepted in PRD

The observation of the electromagnetic counterpart of gravitational-wave (GW) transient GW170817 demonstrated the potential in extracting astrophysical information from multimessenger discoveries. The forthcoming deployment of the first telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory will coincide with Advanced LIGO/Virgo's next observing run, O3, enabling the monitoring of gamma-ray emission at E > 20 GeV, and thus particle acceleration, from GW sources. CTA will not be greatly limited by the precision of GW localization as it will be be capable of rapidly covering the GW error region with sufficient sensitivity. We examine the current status of GW searches and their follow-up effort, as well as the status of CTA, in order to identify some of the general strategies that will enhance CTA's contribution to multimessenger discoveries., Comment: 10 pages

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is the world's largest neutrino detector with a cubic-kilometer instrumented volume at the South Pole. It is preparing for a major upgrade that will significantly increase its sensitivity. A promising technological innovation investigated for this upgrade is wavelength shifting optics. Augmenting sensors with such optics could increase the photo-collection area of IceCube's digital optical modules, and shift the incoming photons' wavelength to where these modules are the most sensitive. Here we investigate the use of IceCube's drill holes themselves as wavelength shifting optics. We calculate the sensitivity enhancement due to increasing the ice's refractive index in the holes, and infusing wavelength-shifting substrate into the ice. We find that, with adequate wavelength-shifter infusion, every ~0.05 increase in the ice's refractive index will increase IceCube's photon sensitivity by 100%, opening the possibility for the substantial, cost effective expansion of IceCube's reach., Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, LIGO, found direct evidence for double black hole binaries emitting gravitational waves. Galactic nuclei are expected to harbor the densest population of stellar-mass black holes. A significant fraction ($\sim30\%$) of these black holes can reside in binaries. We examine the fate of the black hole binaries in active galactic nuclei, which get trapped in the inner region of the accretion disk around the central supermassive black hole. We show that binary black holes can migrate into and then rapidly merge within the disk well within a Salpeter time. The binaries may also accrete a significant amount of gas from the disk, well above the Eddington rate. This could lead to detectable X-ray or gamma-ray emission, but would require hyper-Eddington accretion with a few percent radiative efficiency, comparable to thin disks. We discuss implications for gravitational wave observations and black hole population studies. The masses of neutron stars in neutron star binaries are observed to fall in a narrow mass range around $\sim 1.33$ M$_{\odot}$. We explore the advantage of focusing on this region of the parameter space in gravitational wave searches. We find that an all-sky (externally triggered) search with optimally reduced template bank is expected to detect $14\%$ ($61\%$) more binary mergers than without the reduction. A reduced template bank can also represent significant improvement in technical cost. We also develop a more detailed search method using binary mass distribution, and find similar sensitivity increase to that due to the reduced template bank.

Kilonovae represent an important electromagnetic counterpart for compact binary mergers, which could become the most commonly detected gravitational wave (GW) source. Follow-up observations, triggered by GW events, of kilonovae are nevertheless difficult due to poor localization by GW detectors and due to their faint near-infrared peak emission that has limited observational capability. We show that the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be able to detect kilonovae within the relevant GW-detection range of $\sim$ 200 Mpc in short ($\lesssim$ 12-second) exposure times for a week following the merger. Despite this sensitivity, a kilonova search fully covering a fiducial localized area of $10$ $\mbox{deg}^2$ will not be viable with NIRCam due to its limited field of view. However, targeted surveys may be developed to optimize the likelihood of discovering kilonovae efficiently within limited observing time. We estimate that a survey of $10$ $\mbox{deg}^2$ focused on galaxies within 200 Mpc would require about 13 hours, dominated by overhead times; a survey further focused on galaxies exhibiting high star-formation rates would require $\sim$ 5 hours. The characteristic time may be reduced to as little as $\sim$4 hours, without compromising the likelihood of detecting kilonovae, by surveying sky areas associated with 50%, rather than 90%, confidence regions of 3 GW events, rather than a single event. On detection and identification of a kilonova, a limited number of NIRCam follow-up observations could constrain the properties of matter ejected by the binary and the equation of state of dense nuclear matter., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure

Graham et al. (2015) discovered a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidate and identified the detected 5.2 yr period of the optical variability as the orbital period of the binary. Hydrodynamical simulations predict multiple periodic components for the variability of SMBHBs, thus raising the possibility that the true period of the binary is different from 5.2 yr. We analyse the periodogram of PG1302 and find no compelling evidence for additional peaks. We derive upper limits on any additional periodic modulations in the available data, by modeling the light-curve as the sum of red noise and the known 5.2 yr periodic component, and injecting additional sinusoidal signals. We find that, with the current data, we would be able to detect with high significance (false alarm probability <1%) secondary periodic terms with periods in the range predicted by the simulations, if the amplitude of the variability was at least ~0.07 mag (compared to 0.14 mag for the main peak). A three-year follow-up monitoring campaign with weekly observations can increase the sensitivity for detecting secondary peaks ~50%, and would allow a more robust test of predictions from hydrodynamical simulations., Comment: Submitted in MNRAS Letters 6 pages, 5 figures

Galaxy catalogs are essential for efficient searches of the electromagnetic counterparts of extragalactic gravitational-wave (GW) signals with highly uncertain localization. We show that one can efficiently catalog galaxies within a short period of time with 1-2 meter-class telescopes such as the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) or MDM, in response to an observed GW signal from a compact binary coalescence. We find that a rapid galaxy survey is feasible on the relevant time scale of $\lesssim 1$ week, maximum source distance of $>200$ Mpc and sky area of 100 deg$^2$. With PTF-like telescopes, even 1 day is sufficient for such a survey. This catalog can then be provided to other telescopes to aid electromagnetic follow-up observations to find kilonovae from binary coalescences, as well as other sources. We consider H$\alpha$ observations, which track the star formation rate and are therefore correlated with the rate of compact binary mergers. H$\alpha$ surveys are also able to filter out galaxies that are farther away than the maximum GW source distance. Rapid galaxy surveys that follow GW triggers could achieve $\sim90\%$ completeness with respect to star formation rate, which is currently unavailable. This will significantly reduce the required effort and enhance the immediate availability of catalogs compared to possible future all-sky surveys., Comment: 7 pages

We consider the optimal site selection of future generations of gravitational wave detectors. Previously, Raffai et al. optimized a 2-detector network with a combined figure of merit. This optimization was extended to networks with more than two detectors in a limited way by first fixing the parameters of all other component detectors. In this work we now present a more general optimization that allows the locations of all detectors to be simultaneously chosen. We follow the definition of Raffai et al. on the metric that defines the suitability of a certain detector network. Given the locations of the component detectors in the network, we compute a measure of the network's ability to distinguish the polarization, constrain the sky localization and reconstruct the parameters of a gravitational wave source. We further define the `flexibility index' for a possible site location, by counting the number of multi-detector networks with a sufficiently high Figure of Merit that include that site location. We confirm the conclusion of Raffai et al., that in terms of flexibility index as defined in this work, Australia hosts the best candidate site to build a future generation gravitational wave detector. This conclusion is valid for either a 3-detector network or a 5-detector network. For a 3-detector network site locations in Northern Europe display a comparable flexibility index to sites in Australia. However for a 5-detector network, Australia is found to be a clearly better candidate than any other location., Comment: 30 pages, 23 figures, 2 tables

We report a comprehensive catalog of emission episodes within long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that are separated by a quiescent period during which gamma-ray emission falls below the background level. We use a fully automated identification method for an unbiased, large scale and expandable search. We examine a comprehensive sample of long GRBs from the BATSE, Swift and Fermi missions, assembling a total searched set of 2710 GRBs, the largest catalog of isolated emission episodes so far. Our search extends out to [-1000s,750s] around the burst trigger, expanding the covered time interval beyond previous studies and far beyond the nominal durations (T90) of most bursts. We compare our results to previous works by identifying pre-peak emission (or precursors), defined as isolated emission periods prior to the episode with the highest peak luminosity of the burst. We also systematically search for similarly defined periods after the burst's peak emission. We find that the pre-peak and post-peak emission periods are statistically similar, possibly indicating a common origin. For the analyzed GRBs, we identify 24% to have more than one isolated emission episode, with 11% having at least one pre-peak event and 15% having at least one post-peak event. We identify GRB activity significantly beyond their T90, which can be important for understanding the central engine activity as well as, e.g., gravitational-wave searches.

Current emission models of GeV-PeV neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) predict a neutrino flux with $\ll 1$ detected neutrinos per GRB with kilometer-scale neutrino observatories. The detection of this flux will require the stacking of data from a large number of GRBs, leading to an increased background rate, decreasing the significance of a single neutrino detection. We show that utilizing the temporal correlation between the expected gamma-ray and neutrino fluxes, one can significantly improve the neutrino signal-to-noise ratio. We describe how this temporal correlation can be used. Using realistic GRB and atmospheric neutrino fluxes and incorporating temporal, spectral and directional information, we estimate the probability of a single detected GRB-neutrino being a 5$\sigma$ discovery., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. The first gravitational-wave (GW) observations will greatly benefit from the detection of coincident electromagnetic counterparts. Electromagnetic follow-ups will nevertheless be challenging for GWs with poorly reconstructed directions. GW source localization can be inefficient (i) if only two GW observatories are in operation; (ii) if the detectors' sensitivities are highly non-uniform; (iii) for events near the detectors' horizon distance. For these events, follow-up observations will need to cover 100-1000 square degrees of the sky over a limited period of time, reducing the list of suitable telescopes. We demonstrate that the Cherenkov Telescope Array will be capable of following up GW event candidates over the required large sky area with sufficient sensitivity to detect short gamma-ray bursts, which are thought to originate from compact binary mergers, out to the horizon distance of advanced LIGO/Virgo. CTA can therefore be invaluable starting with the first multimessenger detections, even with poorly reconstructed GW source directions. This scenario also provides a further scientific incentive for GW observatories to further decrease the delay of their event reconstruction.
